FVHS alumnus Richard Kuo provided some motivational and inspirational advice to students during two assemblies at his alma mater.

Fountain Valley Living Magazine

Fountain Valley High alumnus and motivational speaker Richard Kuo returned to his alma mater on Feb. 12 for an inspiring talk during two assemblies. “It’s amazing. It’s great to come back. One of the things I forgot was the vibe and culture (of the campus). The students are really great, and the energy is higher than it was back then,” said Kuo, who still lives in Fountain Valley. Kuo shared his own high school journey, filled with the classic girl problems and difficult courses. However, despite roadblocks in high school, Kuo urged students to see the positive sides of the obstacles in their lives. “It makes me remember that I went through that, and I was stuck in that same situation where I felt hopeless. But being a speaker now, I realize that there is hope out there and it starts with accepting yourself,” he told students. Kuo also advised students to stop the cycle of self-degradation by appreciating themselves for who they are. “When you give love to yourself, you will get love from yourself and others,” he said. Kuo’s anecdotal stories seemed to resonate with the students. “I think that personal stories are the most powerful thing,” he said. “That is how we leave our legacy. It’s by living through the challenges we had, and at the end of the day, making decisions for ourselves to become better people.”

Distance duo

A salute to Fountain Valley High School distance runner Dylan Bivens and his mom, Elizabeth Fellows Wade, who both finished the LA Marathon on Valentine’s Day. Dylan is from a blended family and we mistakenly used the wrong last name when we featured him in the February issue. While he has run many distance events, including half-marathons, this was his first marathon and he finished with a time of 5 hours, 37 minutes. Mom Elizabeth finished the 26.2-mile race in 5 hours and 5 minutes. Quite an accomplishment. Congrats to both!

Well-wishing pets (and their owners) enjoyed Dr. Tom Scherer’s retirement gathering at Warner Avenue Animal Hospital on Jan. 29.

Bow-wowing out By CURT SEEDEN Fountain Valley Living Magazine

Veterinarian Dr. Tom Scherer retires after 40 years at Warner Avenue Animal Hospital.

Dr. Tom Scherer started examining our newest cat Waco, an orange kitten that wandered into our lives. “I heard most orange tabby cats are males,” I said to him, because I read it on the Internet so it must be true. “Nope, this one is a girl,” Dr. Scherer declared to my shock and even Waco’s. Obviously not the toughest diagnosis in the world for a vet, but for the past 16 years, Dr. Scherer has had all the 14

answers for our family’s cats. Tom Scherer has spent the last 40 years at Warner Avenue Animal Hospital. On Jan. 29, he retired. A tall man with white hair and a bushy white beard, Tom Scherer does more than diagnose and treat your pets. He takes the time to teach you about the various maladies that can attack our beloved animals, and presents every option for treatment. Debbi Morrell lives in Buena Park, but when her pets are ill, she makes the drive to Fountain Valley to see Dr. Scherer, and she’s done so for the past 20 years. “We’ve always been so impressed with him,” Morrell said. “We originally came here because our Labrador

retriever needed surgery and Dr. Scherer gave us the best price.” Morrell was among about 25 well-wishing pet owners who stopped by the animal hospital Jan. 29 for punch and cookies to celebrate Scherer’s long career. A lot of us feel we may not have seen the last of Tom Scherer. But for now, he’s content to enjoy his modest car collection and find other things to do. “I’ve got a friend who runs a mission in Santa Ana,” he said. “I might spend some time helping him.” In the meantime, Warner Avenue Animal Hospital’s newest vet—Dr. Lesley Black, will join Dr. John Hartwick and Warner Animal’s pleasant and helpful staff. www.FountainValleyMagazine.com

FV Firefighter Gordon Cromwell will compete in 69-floor climb to support Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

18

MARCH 2016

Fountain Valley Living Magazine

ountain Valley firefighter Gordon Cromwell is headed up to Seattle early this month, with “up” being the key word. Cromwell will compete in the 2016 Scott Firefighter Stairclimb, a fundraiser for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in the state of Washington. Last year, 1,900 firefighters from 330 different fire departments competed and raised $2.2 million for blood cancer research. “It’s something I’ve been wanting to do,” Cromwell said. “I grew up in the Seattle area and my family still lives up there.” Cromwell and the other competing firefighters will climb 69 floors wearing their full turnout gear, including oxygen tank in the tallest building in the United States west of the Mississippi River. “This is a charity event put on by Scott Safety, the company that manufactures the breathing apparatuses we and others use,” Cromwell said. Cromwell estimates that the gear and airpack he will wear adds 50-60 pounds. “I train at work to stay in shape for the job anyway but I’ve ramped up the training,” the 11-year Fire Department veteran said. “I’ve been training with a 40-pound disc on a stair treadmill at my gym, and this past month I’ve been going down to Thousand Steps Beach in Laguna Beach” Competitors at the Stairclimb will scale 788 feet of vertical elevation of the Columbia Center, which computes to 1,356 steps. This is the 25th anniversary of the Scott Stairclimb, and organizers expect another 1,900 firefighters to compete. In the past the competition has attracted firefighters from as far away as Australia and New Zealand. “There’s no other event like this in the world,” Cromwell said. “None of the money raised goes to me or the Fountain Valley Fire Department or to Scott Safety,” the 44-year-old firefighter said. “It goes to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.” To donate to Cromwell’s cause, go to www. llswa.org, hit the donate button, and it will steer you to a page where you can donate on his behalf.

$1 million gift is big boost to Boys & Girls Club

The Pacific Life Foundation has made a $1 million donation to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley to help build a new Boys & Girls Club on the campus of Golden West College. The new club is slated to open in spring 2016. It will be part of a three building “family campus” complex on the Golden West College campus, including the school age club supported by Pacific Life Foundation, a gymnasium, and a preschool. Pacific Life Foundation presented Club CEO Tanya Hoxsie with a $1 million check at their annual grant awards ceremony on Jan. 21. The new “family campus” is expected to serve up to 2,500 youth per year, primarily from the Ocean View School District. It is estimated that 70 percent will come from low-income households. The first of the three buildings, the Robert Mayer Child Development Preschool, was completed in 2011 and serves more than 200 Huntington Beach area children each year. Construction on the school age club and gymnasium is underway and the club is expected to open on March 28, on time for local schools’ spring break. “A gift like this is transformational E-mail: fvmagazine@live.com

for our organization,” Hoxsie said. “The club has been working toward our dream of bringing California’s first Boys & Girls Club on a college campus to our community for about 10 years. Pacific Life Foundation is helping us finally make that dream a reality.” Hoxsie added, “We are so grateful that Pacific Life Foundation sees our community’s kids as their best investment for a great future in this community. We are proud to partner with Pacific Life Foundation and name our new school age Club in their honor.” There are several ways to get involved with the new Pacific Life Foundation Branch of the Boys & Girls Club. To learn about enrollment opportunities, beginning with full days during spring break or after school programs starting in April, call (714) 531-2582. The club still needs community support to fully fund the Family Campus and there are still several smaller naming opportunities available at the new Pacific Life Branch and and Gymnasium. To learn more or make a contribution to the Building Dreams capital campaign, visit www.buildingdreams campaign.com or call (714) 309-4962.

hink of it as the first exhibition game of the baseball season. Fountain Valley High School assistant baseball coach Chris Sorce thought it would be a fun idea to hold a pre-season baseball tournament pitting Sunset League teams (Fountain Valley, Edison, Huntington Beach and the rest) against Trinity League teams (Mater Dei, Santa Margarita, St. John Bosco and the rest). He tossed out the idea to coaches and the powers that be from both sides with no complaints, so he moved forward.

Sorce then thought it would be neat to get some coaches together and “chat more about it with some sandCHRIS SORCE wiches.” That idea, Sorce said, snowballed. In late January, more than 125 baseball minds gathered at the Newport Harbor Elks Lodge for an evening of www.FountainValleyMagazine.com

baseball chatter featuring college and high school coaches and players, Major League players, scouts and even an umpire. Fountain Valley resident Ed Arnold served as master of ceremonies, but because this was a baseball-themed event, Ed was given the title of “commissioner of ceremonies.” Sorce said they opened the evening by inviting umpire Dick Jolly, who after being introduced, was soundly booed by the crowd. “It was all in good fun,” Sorce added. The event was so successful that

several coaches turned to Sorce during the evening and noted, “You’re going to need a bigger room next year.” “You never know how thing are going to turn out but you always want it to be great,” Sorce said. “I must have gotten 50 emails, texts and calls—people were so complimentary.” Sorce also decided to invite a couple of first responders with either Trinity League or Sunset League credentials. “When you were a kid growing up you always looked up to the fireman and the policeman,” Sorce said. So in attendance during the evening

were Fountain Valley police officer Mike Fitzpatrick, who played baseball at Santa Margarita High, and Fountain Valley High grad Rob Sharpnack, who was the CIF Player of the Year in 1985 when Fountain Valley won the CIF championship and who is now the Chief of Police in Costa Mesa. Another highlight was the introduction of former Mater Dei High and Arizona State standout Cory Hahn, who is paralyzed from the waist down after being injured in his third college game in 2011. The standing ovation lasted for more than two minutes, Sorce said. The tournament was held in mid-February as we were going to press with this magazine. “This was a great night with great memories—getting a bunch of baseball guys in the same room,” Sorce added. “We really hit a home run.”

Let the egg scramble begin Annual Easter Egg Hunt is March 26 at FV Sports Park The city’s biggest one-day event of the year is set for Saturday, March 26 at the Fountain Valley Sports Park. The annual Easter Egg Hunt, which last year attracted about 6,000 people, will give children the opportunity to gather Easter eggs during a morning of continuous egg hunts. Inside the plastic eggs are candy, toys and other trinkets. The Easter egg hunt is free, and parents are reminded to make sure their children have baskets to collect the eggs. Activities begin at 8 a.m. and include a pancake breakfast served by the Kiwanis Club of Fountain Valley ($5 and up), free carnival games, entertainment, inflatables, crafts, and $2 photos with the Easter Bunny. The city’s Recreation and Community Services Department promises lots of prizes and a surprise attraction. Children can also enter a coloring contest. The coloring page can be picked up at the Recreation Center or by going to

www.fountainvalley.org/community/communityservices/ specialevent. The Recreation Center and Sports Park are at 16400 Brookhurst St. More information: (714) 839-8611.

Thanks to those who make a difference Volunteerism is what makes Fountain Valley strong By CHERYL BROTHERS Mayor, Fountain Valley

When he came on board as the city’s new community services manager, Rob Frizzelle found himself in charge of the city’s biggest event of the year —Summerfest (set to open about 10 days later). And he was surprised (more accurately, “worried”) to learn MAYOR CHERYL BROTHERS that Summerfest was organized and carried out by a committee of volunteer community members. He quickly learned there are people in Fountain Valley willing to roll up their sleeves, make themselves available, give of their hearts and support the town. Fountain Valley is unique because it has a volunteer base second to none. Last summer, a committee of res-

idents with their own special talents, was put together to plan out the city’s participation in the Special Olympics Host Town program. Like the Summerfest Committee, the Host Town Committee spent many months meeting and planning the city’s efforts—all handled by local residents and business people who care about this community. For three days, Fountain Valley played host to the Special Olympics athletes from The Netherlands as they prepared for the Summer Games in Los Angeles. It was a memorable three days of a community stepping up. The level of pride was amazing. We have volunteers in town who work at our senior center, patrol our streets (our Retired Senior Volunteer Program), coach or officiate youth sports, participate in neighborhood cleanups, mentor students and so much more. Why do we volunteer? We volunteer because we genuinely care about our community. When we do good things we counte-balance all the negative news we read and hear every day. By volun-

teering, we are making our little world— Fountain Valley—a better place. There are dozens of service organizations in town—Rotary, Kiwanis, the Woman’s Club, Friends of the Library, the Fountain Valley Schools Foundation and the Fountain Valley Community Foundation—and many more as well as places of worship that step up all the time. There is a volunteer opportunity coming up April 23 called “Day of Community Service” that will involve several large service projects in FV and HB, and you can be involved. Go to www.JustServe. org, use the advanced key word “CS2016” to sign up for the project of your choice. ■

Coffee with the Mayor

10 a.m.—Noon March 7 I’m starting a new “Coffee with the Mayor” gathering where the community is invited to stop by Heritage Park for a cup of coffee (I even make the coffee myself) and sit and chat with me. The next one is 10 a.m.–noon Monday, March 7, and the following one will be Saturday, 10 a.m.–noon April 23. Heritage Park is next to the Library.

Mimi’s Jewelry store owner David Truong explains to the Courreges School students the light qualities of a gem when they visit his store for a learning fieldtrip.

A gem of a fieldtrip

Mimi’s Jewelry transforms into geology classroom. Courreges Elementary School teacher Danielle Dennis brought students to Mimi’s Jewelry where the youngsters received a fun lesson from store owner David Truong on gem identification, checked out stones close up with a microscope and even broke open geodes to see what’s inside. All the children left with Junior Gemologist certificates.

re you “The Voice of Fountain Valley?” Kevin Tison, the vocal music director at Fountain Valley High School, is once again staging a solo singing competition showcasing talented students at the high school. The event is set for 6 p.m. Saturday, March 5 in the FVHS gym. The competition, Tison says, is in the same style as “American Idol” and “The Voice” but all done “with Fountain Valley style.” Last year, junior Paige Taylor won, performing Gravity by Sara Barellis in the first round, Skinny Love by Birdy in the second round and then offered her own arrangement of Funny Valentine in the final round. The Voice winner will receive a prize package valued at more than $150 that includes VIP tickets to see The Voice filmed in Hollywood, a meet and greet with some “very special guest artists” and a feature article in the April issue of Fountain Valley Living Magazine. The top three finishers will also receive trophies and the second-place finisher will win $100 in gift cards, while the third-place winner will receive $75 in gift cards. The vocal competition starts at 6 p.m. in the gym at Fountain Valley High School. More information: fvhsvocalmusic. com

Success comes from doing what is difficult

mericans used to love lofty aspirations. We didn’t quit because it was hard. I’m reminded of President Kennedy’s speech when he said, “We choose to go to the moon and do these things not because they are easy, but because they are hard.” Yet, we now STEVE SCHULTZ have a culture that looks for the easy—failing to realize that nothing easy ever makes you better. What will be your moon moment? What grand aspiration do you have that will give your life great inspiration? And do you have the character to work harder the harder it gets? I’ve never seen a group embody the “moon mentality” more than this year’s Fountain Valley High School boys’ basketball team. In fact, our first day of practice this year was not in a gym. It was spent together as a team building a rocket ship out of Legos, which would serve as a metaphor for what they would be doing all year together—doing what was hard. In my 13 years coaching high school basketball, this team is the most successful I’ve ever seen. I’ve coached teams at Los Al that had Division 1 athletes on it who won more games and league championships. But what is different

about those teams is they were supposed to win. This FV team wasn’t and it won anyway. They made the most of themselves. They became their absolute best and they topped themselves every day, or as our team scholar Vinh Ngo put it, “We out beat our best every day.” It was always us vs. us. They are the only team I’ve ever seen that never had one bad practice where the energy and effort wasn’t there. They didn’t have any superstar athletes to rely on, so they looked to each other. It was their togetherness that separated them from their opponents; allowing them to defeat teams they weren’t supposed to defeat and compete with the very best. These 11 young men, made up of six juniors, four sophomores, and one freshman, are the shortest and youngest team in school history. But they wanted to make some history of their own. They now have the school record for most three-pointers made in a single game as a team; Mike Lightbody has the school record for most three-pointers

made in a single game; and Matt Serven has the school record for most three pointers made in a season. They have won 15 games together and a tournament championship. As nice as all of those achievements are, their ultimate success comes from their high character as people on and off the court. They didn’t run away from a challenge, and they were never selfish, lazy, or immature. But they were always about team success, and they did everything their coaches asked with the most positive of attitudes and they represented FVHS with honor. What they lack in athleticism, size or talent, they make up for in integrity, class and the deep yearning to do what is difficult. And it is in difficulty that we find discovery of all the potential we have inside. STEVE SCHULTZ is the head varsity basketball coach and an English teacher at Fountain Valley High School.
