When Curt and I first met Steve Schultz, it was because we had learned he was among the authors of one of the books from the Chicken Soup for the Soul series. This was in 2009, and we featured him in our third issue of Fountain Valley Living Magazine. A short time later, Steve wrote a column for the magazine titled “Growing up on Bunting Circle.” It remains our favorite column of his. We count it a privilege to have had Steve on board as a columnist for the past decade. He has given his time (he's a volunteer with us) and his words to encourage Fountain Valley to ELEVATE others. And today we offer congratulations to Steve for being named Fountain Valley High School Teacher of the Year for 2019. This is the second time he has earned this honor. We think most, if not all, of his students would agree with the choice! Congratulations, Steve! Enjoy!

SUMMERFESTS By CURT SEEDEN Fountain Valley Living Magazine

2009

FV's first Summerfest

n June 2009, Fountain Valley was introduced to a new event—one that would become the biggest annual attraction in the city. Summerfest, which this year is set for June 20-23 at the Fountain Valley Sports Park, made its debut on June 12, 2009 in celebration of the city's birthday (June 13, 1957). That means Summerfest is celebrating its 11th anniversary this year. The festival has evolved over the years, but the basics are still intact: carnival rides, live entertainment, exhibitor booths, a variety of food options, a beer garden and the Fountain Valley Classic Car & Truck Show.

2010

2011

Battle of the Bands

Here’s a fun look back at the previous 10 Summerfests. 2009: Summerfest was held June 12-14 (Yes, it was only three days back then). The Classic Car & Truck Show, once a much smaller event held on Slater Avenue during Red Ribbon Week, featured an estimated 200 cars on display, music, drawings and model car kit craft activities for kids. The Kiwanis Club of Fountain Valley put on a pancake breakfast adjacent to the car show. The amusement rides were located on the field facing Brookhurst Street next to the Boys & Girls Club. 2010: Summerfest was held June 11-13. The beer garden became a beer and wine garden, and a taco-eating contest was held on Sunday, June 13 as part of a Battle of the Bands contest. 2012

2011: Technically, Summerfest was billed as a three-day event (June 10-12), but “Preview Night” was introduced on Thursday, June 9. Carnival rides were available for $1 and gourmet food trucks were on hand. Also new was a skateboard contest and demonstrations on both Saturday and Sunday. And, a craft show was held inside the Recreation Center featuring the works of about 60 vendors Friday through Sunday. 2012: Summerfest became a fourday event (June 7-10), starting with Preview Night on Thursday, June 7. A notable addition was Dog Day Afternoon, a Sunday-only event featuring small dog races, an agility course, dog adoptions, police K9 demonstrations and more. 2013: Summerfest was held June 2730. Preview Night food trucks included Bacon Mania, Dogzilla, The Burnt Truck and The Flip Truck, among others. Newest and biggest addition: A fireworks show was held Saturday evening. 2014: Summerfest ran from June 26-29. Sky Network Communications provided a Live Sports Tent this year. Musical entertainment featured a bevy of tribute bands with salutes to The Beatles, Journey and Santana. 2015: Notable at this year’s Summerfest, which was held June 25-28, was the introduction of the community stage, giving local groups an opportunity to perform. The community stage was part of the Kids Zone, located near the Boys & Girls Club, which featured activities

for the younger crowd, 8 and under. Also, on Sunday only, one field was devoted to kids bounce houses, a rock wall and a surfboard simulator. 2016: The Classic Car & Truck Show moved to the front field of the FV Sports Park and the carnival rides were moved to the back half of the park. Summerfest was held June 23-26. On Sunday, Fountain Valley Living Magazine and the Summerfest Committee staged the Fountain Valley Home & Garden Show and Vintage Market on the front field. 2017: Summerfest ran June 22-25. To honor the city’s 60th anniversary, a ticketed VIP party was held on Friday night, featuring cocktails, appetizers and a perfect view of a fireworks show. The next morning, a 60th anniversary parade was held at 9 a.m., featuring about 70 entries, including marching bands from both local high schools, youth groups, local celebrities and businesses. Fountain Valley resident and Hall of Fame sportscaster Ed Arnold was the parade grand marshal. 2018: Summerfest ran from June 21-24 and included a Friday night fireworks show. New was a Saturday afternoon craft beer festival. Musical entertainment included tributes to Journey, Chicago and Neil Diamond. Also, the popularity of the community stage skyrocketed with dozens of bands, individuals, dance troupes and even Taekwondo teams performing. This year’s Summerfest, as well as the

Right Direction Retiring Fire Chief Tony Coppolino leaves behind a strong department Photos by LYNN SEEDEN / Seeden Photography

fter more than 30 years with the Fountain Valley Fire Department, Chief Tony Coppolino will retire effective June 27. A Fountain Valley native who attended Cox Elementary School and graduated from Fountain Valley High, Coppolino said he leaves a department that rates with the best in Orange County. “There is no doubt in my mind that the Fountain Valley Fire Department—if it’s not the healthiest department in the county—it’s in the top three,” Coppolino said. Coppolino spent his entire firefighting career in Fountain Valley. He was promoted to fire chief in 2013. He began his Fountain Valley tenure as an administrative intern in 1988, moved to a reserve in 1989 and was hired fulltime in 1990. Coppolino spent five years as a firefighter before becoming a firefighter-paramedic. He was promoted to captain, then department training captain and later battalion chief. Coppolino met his wife, Mindy right out of high school. Mindy’s dad was a Newport Beach firefighter, which “spurred an interest in the fire department,” he said. Prior to his hiring as chief, the Fountain Valley Fire Department was led by multiple interim fire chiefs, Coppolino said, and at that time the city was considering outsourcing fire service to the Orange County Fire Authority. Without permanent leadership, Coppolino went to then-City Manager Ray Kromer and told him,” I can be your next fire chief.” He said one of his major accomplishments has been taking a department without direction and “moving it in

E-mail: fvmagazine@live.com

the right direction to get to where we are today.” Coppolino, 52, and Mindy have three children: Carli, 23, a medical aesthetician; Courtney, 21, a pre-veterinary student; and son, Cole, 17, who will graduate from Edison High this year. Coppolino attended the Santa Ana College Fire Academy prior to joining the FVFD and later earned his bachelor’s degree. “We have really been able to get the department going in the right direction,” Coppolino said. The ownership and pride from the firefighters and the community from five years ago to today is off the charts.”

Retiring Fire Chief Tony Coppolino with his wife, Mindy, and their children. The chief grew up in Fountain Valley and has served the Fountain Valley Fire Department his entire career.

For a paper return, it’s four weeks after the taxpayer mailed it. The tool has a tracker that displays progress through three phases: 1. Return Received 2. Refund Approved 3. Refund Sent To use the “Where’s My Refund?” online tool, taxpayers need to provide their Social Security number, tax filing

BS

Where’s My Refund? There’s a tracker for that! status and the exact amount of the refund claimed on their tax return. “Where’s My Refund?” is updated no more than once every 24 hours, usually overnight, so there’s no need to check the status more often. Taxpayers who owe should pay as much as possible to minimize interest and penalty charges. The taxpayers should visit IRS.gov/payments to explore their payment options. We at Alex A. Accetta, CPA & Associates have experts to assist you with your tax planning, tax preparation and the accurate filing of your taxes. We can help you year round, not just during tax time. Fountain Valley Living Magazine and the Fountain Valley Historical Society teamed up April 27 to sponsor the Spring Jubilee at the Gazebo, a daylong home and garden fair that featured crafters, home and garden improvement businesses, food and old-fashioned fun. More than 450 people attended the Heritage Park event, which featured lawn games for kids, hand-cranked, homemade ice cream, a strolling barbershop quartet, and the ceremonial planting of the “Jubilee Tree” by the city’s public works department. The event was also held in conjunction with the Friends of the Library’s annual plant sale. 14

An open letter to the Class of 2019: Love, Lead, Elevate

By STEVE SCHULTZ For Fountain Valley Living Magazine

R

aise your hand if when you were younger you turned a sheet into a cape and believed you could fly? Now answer this, who taught you how to do that? The answer is simple: no one did— that belief in yourself and your ability STEVE SCHULTZ, Columnist to be bigger than you are was already inside of you naturally. My next question for you: Who taught you to put your cape away? Again, the answer is simple but also sad: Your parents, your peers, siblings, schools, and society did. They were well-meaning, as conformity is contagious, but it’s time we stop telling you to grow up and encourage you instead to grow back to when you knew how to fly. The superpowerful want you to forget about your superpowers, but let me remind you of who you truly are. You lived your greatest superpower when you were a small child. What classes did the 3- and 4-year-

old take to learn to paint, sing, dance, build, draw and play? None! No one taught you to be an artist—you were born one. Slowly as we prepared you to be proper in school and compared you to your peers, labeled you with a grade, and turned you into a walking trophy for your parents to parade around, you stopped dancing, stopped singing, building, drawing and playing. Many of you have even stopped smiling and laughing as frequently as you once did. You then entered middle school where we sent you to classes to “teach” you how to draw, sing, dance and do theater, trying to put back in what the adults had already taken out. We took away your artistry so you could be a scholar. We told you to take your cape off and you obeyed. Everyone used to be an artist, not just the kids in art class. My third question: Who is happier:

the 50-year-old or the 5-year-old? Of course, it’s the child who is pure, elevated love, not the adult who is full of fear and anger. The child knows he or she is the hero who is responsible to take on the villain, while the adults know they are not supposed to believe in childish things. The thing is, however, I’m not recommending you be childish; I’m reminding you to be child-like. And one of the best places to go to remember who you are is inside children’s books. I’ve written a children’s book called “Love Lead Elevate” that I think can help you on your journey into adulthood by learning the lessons the playground of your youth has to teach you. In my book, a young boy is sitting on a park bench next to his grandfather STEVE SCHULTZ—Cont.on page 34

at Ellis Park. Different pieces of the playground come to life and teach the boy about having peace in life. The slide, for instance, reminds us that life is full of compliments and criticism, but the key is learning to enjoy both the climb up and the slide down and the climb up again, realizing each provides you value. Then the swing set teaches the boy that you will get a lot higher in life when someone is behind you leading you up with an extra push than you will on your own. The monkey bars teach the boy that in order to get to the next bar you have to let go of the one you’re currently holding onto because if you

don’t keep moving but stay in one place too long you will eventually get stuck, overwhelmed, and fall off the monkey bars. Inside the sandbox the boy builds a sandcastle and learns that the sand he used to build his castle was the same sand used by the kids who came before him to build their castles. And so he learns that the castles we build don’t last very long and so you shouldn’t spend too much of your time worrying over how big your castle becomes because it all becomes dust again anyway. Then the boy sees the giant teeter totter in the center of Ellis Park. The teeter totter teaches the boy the true purpose of life: gaining peace by becoming the Love you come from by only allowing love to come from you. The teeter totter tells the boy: “This ride is not about transactions

but transformation. It’s not so you can rise into the air but for you to elevate others by leading them up with unconditional love. You do that by devoting yourself to loving everyone, even loving those that don’t like you and loving those who have hurt you. In order to do love you must be love. When Love is elevated, everything else in your life that doesn’t matter slides off the teeter totter past you, only leaving room for love to be present in you.” The boy leaves the playground and runs over to the park bench to tell his grandpa all he just learned. His grandpa says, “I have a present for you, but before I give it to you I must wash your feet.” His grandpa takes a bottle of water and pours it on the boy’s feet and washes away all the sand and dirt from the day and says, “Your final lesson ADVERTISEMENT

from the playground is to be a feet washer. You do this by forgiving everyone of everything. Like the teeter totter taught, only after you have forgiven all can you be all-loving. Elevate others by kneeling down and washing their feet, removing any hurt feelings toward them. Wounds can be a place Love leaves you or a place Love heals you. One holds a grudge and the other holds grace. The distinction will make all the difference in your life.” And then his grandpa handed him a beautiful royal blue yo-yo with a caterpillar painted on one side and a butterfly painted on the other. His grandpa explained: “Life is like a yo-yo, there will be ups and there will be downs. Peace comes when you realize how a yo-yo works. When you feel like you’re falling, the finger of God is really preparing you for the next trick. “Peace is knowing the pop-up is coming while enduring the drop and knowing that unconditional, everlasting love has His finger holding your string the whole time. What the caterpillar thinks is his demise is really his metamorphosis. Your wings are waiting for you on the other side of fear where love is fully present.” And the boy learns that in order to be your greatest self, your life has to be led by something greater than yourself. Take off your graduation gowns and put on your capes, embracing your superpower to become the love you come from by only allowing love to come from you. I love you, big, giant, much! Lead up.
