TROUBADOURS SALUTE As a father/father-in-law of three former Troubadours (from long ago!), it gave me great joy to read in the September edition about the Troubadours’ outstanding achievements. Kudos to Kevin Tison who has built upon the great successes of his predecessors. Fountain Valley High School has had a top-notch vocal music program for many years. Your readers may not know, however, that our community nearly lost this program. At a time of severe budget constraints, Vocal Music at FVHS was on the chopping block. A group of concerned parents rallied and formed the FV Vocal Music Foundation. Under the leadership of the Foundation’s President, Pat Harney (of blessed memory) and Treasurer, Robin Einstein, enough funds were raised to keep the program intact. We, today, are the beneficiaries of their foresight and dedication.

Measure HH

Fountain Valley 9-1-1 Response/Police-Fire/Essential City Services Measure Placed on November 2016 Ballot On July 19, the Fountain Valley City Council voted to place the Measure HH—Fountain Valley 9-1-1 Response/Police-Fire/Essential City Services Measure on the November 2016 ballot. If enacted by voters, Measure HH would provide our City with funding to maintain community services such as police and fire. Consider the following:  9-1-1 emergency services calls have increased 27% over the last four years  The City of Fountain Valley only has two fire stations and unless additional funding is identified, Fire Station No. 2 will have to be closed. One of the key objectives of Measure HH—Fountain Valley 9-1-1 Response/Police-Fire/Essential City Services Measure, is to provide a reliable source of locally controlled funding—that can’t be taken by Sacramento—to help maintain and increase our neighborhood patrols, restore the number of firefighters to adequate staffing levels, and improve 9-1-1 emergency response times. Measure HH is a temporary local 1 cent sales tax—not a tax on your home or property. Sales tax is also not applied to prescription medication or food purchased as groceries. And out-of-town visitors who come to our City will also be sharing the cost.

     

Maintain 911 emergency response, neighborhood patrols and special crime suppression units Keep both Fountain Valley fire stations open Provide up-to-date safety equipment, communication devices, and other response apparatus Maintain police cadet recruitment and training programs, and front desk service Maintain school crossing guards/school resource officers Upgrade 9-1-1 emergency communication radios and equipment

In addition to Measure HH, several other issues such as State Propositions, legislative and City Council elections will also appear on your Nov. 8 ballot. For official information about the Fountain Valley’s Measure HH, visit www.fountainvalley.org. For information about how to register to vote, contact the Fountain Valley City Clerk’s Office at (714) 593-4445 or the Orange County Registrar of Voters at www.ocvote.com. Everlasting goodness requires some imagination

W

By STEVE SCHULTZ Fountain Valley Living Magazine

Difference Makers

illy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory was a financial flop when the movie first came out in 1971. It was only many years later that it blossomed into the cultural icon that stands today almost a half century after its release. Lesson: Almost all great visionary masterpieces are not understood at first by common people. So don’t be discouraged if your hits aren’t hits yet. STEVE SCHULTZ As my little brother, JT Navarro, always says, “When someone tells you that you’re not your dream, respond with, ‘Not yet!’” As a boy, twenty-five years ago I first learned about Golden Tickets, Everlasting Gobstoppers, Oompa Loompas, rivers flowing with chocolate, and soda that could make you fly. The indelible impression it imprinted on my young imagination is still alive in me today as a man. Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka sang, “If you want to view paradise, simply look around and view it. Anything you want to, do it. Want to change the world? There’s nothing to it.” But as I listen to those lyrics from “Pure Imagination,” I wonder how this new video game generation of children raised indoors on screens and sheltered from having to face setbacks and earn trophies, will be able to imagine and create a better world when their worlds have been imagined and created for them. 26

OCTOBER 2016

Play was something you created outside, not a button you pressed indoors. Treehouses were something you built, not something bought for you. Through play, you learned how to lead and how to listen, how to cooperate and how to compete, how to clean off your scratches and get back up to bat after several strike outs, and how to go all out after being chewed out. Children were once raised to believe they were entitled to nothing and everything must be earned. They didn’t dare disrespect an elder because their parents demanded discipline and respect from them and we never saw our parents disrespect our coaches and teachers so we knew we couldn’t either. And when we messed up, we fessed up, as parents were our prosecutors, not our defense attorneys against liability. The parents in the movie, however, seem so afraid to be momentarily disliked by their children that they let their children be in charge of them. These parents fail to realize that children need your presence more than your presents. They need you to let them fail but never let them quit. The story of Willy Wonka isn’t about candy, but raising children with character and class. It’s a morality tale on the beginning of the epidemic of poor parenting that causes enabled children to become disabled adults. Author Roald Dahl showcases this

Fountain Valley Living Magazine

by the various children and their parents who are removed from the chocolate factory for choosing instant gratification over everlasting goodness. The whole premise of the Golden Ticket and the evil Slugworth wanting to steal the secret of the Everlasting Gobstopper is really a ruse by Wonka, who’s looking for an “honest and loving” child who will always do the right thing regardless of the poor example set by adults. The climax of the movie is when Charlie’s grandpa says, “I’ll get even with him (Wonka). If Slugworth wants a Gobstopper, he’ll get one.” And Charlie turns away from his grandpa and walks back to Wonka and gives him the Everlasting Gobstopper and thus passes the ultimate test. The boy raised in poverty becomes the richest of them all and lives happily ever after. Hold on to your pure imagination and change the world by showing your children that being honest matters more than honors, and being their best, not the best, is the ultimate test. To have added more love to the world is to have won The Golden Ticket, and that is the only win that is everlasting. STEVE SCHULTZ is the head varsity basketball coach and an English teacher at Fountain Valley High School. You can email Steve at FVLiving@Live.com or contact him through the magazine's office, (714) 847-7714. www.FountainValleyMagazine.com

Let’s maintain the allure of Fountain Valley

here’s a lot to be said for living in central Orange County, particularly Fountain Valley. Homebuyers want value, not just in the home they purchase but the city in which they live. On Aug. 27 when the Courreges Tank House was moved to Heritage Park, the parade SUSAN SAURASTRI that escorted it through Fountain Valley was a scene straight out of Mayberry. It was small-town America at its best, a real Norman Rockwell moment. FVPD secured the way as kids on bikes sported smiles and cheers. Residents gathered curbside waving and whistling as dignitaries and donors drove by in classic convertibles. The high school marching band and color guard were on hand to greet the crowds. Afterwards, Hyundai hosted a spread and live music for the community to enjoy. The desirability of a nice place to live is made sweeter by the collective energy of its neighbors and volunteers. Selling Fountain Valley to prospective homebuyers is a joy for me. Sometimes we’re so consumed by the rigor of our daily lives that we miss taking notice of our surroundings.

30

OCTOBER 2016

The engine that drives the desirability factor of this city is our award-winning schools. Add to that the charm and character of our environment. Feed the ducks, pack a picnic or rent a bike or boat for year-round entertainment at Mile Square Park. Business deals can be made on one of the three 18-hole golf courses. When you want to polish up your skills, classes are available at our own Senior Center. In Fountain Valley we celebrate summer in style with Summerfest, concerts and movies in the park, and an outdoor market. Family time during the holidays is a fantasy come true, with the annual tree lighting, the singing of carols and a visit by Santa at Fountain Valley’s Recreation Center. Sam’s Club and Costco in the same city: Yes, we have them both. Health clubs, hotels, and restaurants, too. A tour of Fountain Valley with all that it offers is convincing evidence that purchasing a home here is a long-term investment that will always pay big dividends. Our police and firefighters make us Fountain Valley Proud. When I discuss value versus costs with relocating clients I suggest home shoppers shed their coats, hang up the umbrellas, ditch the bug spray, sell the snow shovels and I welcome them to paradise.

Fountain Valley Living Magazine

I’ve never used this column for a political forum but in recent conversations with residents, I realize that many of you are not aware of Fountain Valley’s long-term budget shortfall. On our ballots in November will be Measure HH asking you to approve a 1 percent sales tax for Fountain Valley. I don’t know anyone who is a fan of taxes. I’m certainly not, but voting no is not an option if we want to sustain the services and livability of Fountain Valley. The possible alternative of raising property taxes would be a bigger bite to swallow and would unfairly affect Fountain Valley homeowners. Please take the time to educate yourself on this issue. Attend the City Council meetings prior to Nov. 8. City Manager Bob Hall, Police Chief Dan Llorens and Fire Chief Tony Coppolino are available to meet with you and answer questions. Call (714) 593-4402. Let’s keep Fountain Valley a nice place to live. Vote Yes on HH.

POLICE PROMOTIONS AND RETIREMENT

The Fountain Valley Police Department hosted a Badge Ceremony in August that featured the promotion of Senior Officer Don Farmer, below left, to the rank of sergeant and the promotion of K-9 Officer Bill Hughes to the rank of senior officer. The Police Department also recognized the retirement of Sgt. Kurt Ulrich, right, and Sgt. Ted Valle (not pictured).

Newly promoted Sgt. Don Farmer enjoys running and is passionate about the Special Olympics Torch Run. You will often see him on bicycle patrol at Summerfest. He is married and has two children. 32 OCTOBER 2016 Fountain Valley Living Magazine

Congratulations to Sgt. Kurt Ulrich who retires this month after a long and successful career in law enforcement. He has held numerous positions with FVPD over the years. We at Fountain Valley Living Magazine extend our best wishes to him in his www.FountainValleyMagazine.com retirement.
