STAGED SUPRISE: FVHS Music Director Kevin Tison traveled to Connecticut to surprise young FV

tunity, and better yet, made it as special a surprise as possible. I first met Taven Blanke two years ago when he wandered into my Fountain Valley Singers—a middle school feeder choir that I started back in 2006. Taven was a cute little sixth grader with a personality that was a million

times beyond his size. When he would sing or audition for a solo, the room would go bananas. And he would just smile. Something told me even then that this kid was destined for something extraordinary. Just about a year ago, Taven performed with the Fountain Valley Singers on stage at the Segerstrom Concert Hall as part of our “Sounds of the Season” holiday concert, with all the choirs of the FVHS Vocal Music Program and a full professional orchestra. I knew the audience would be on its feet hearing his powerful but sweet voice fill that grand hall, accompanied by the choirs and orchestra. When he was done with his solo, as I continued to conduct, Taven reached over to the podium and gave me a little fist-bump. He had killed it! Then in August of 2019, through a turn of events, fast-forward and Taven is onstage at the Goodspeed Theater in East Haddam, CT. He is the lead and star of “Billy Elliot—The Musical.” Learning the entire show (singing, acting, dancing) he literally owned every scene—in just one month of rehearsal time. I knew I had to get up there to see him! So, during a work trip to New York City (planning for Troubadours’ upcoming Carnegie Hall performance in June 2020), I hopped a train to East Haddam and found my way into the tiny town (all coordinated with Taven’s mom, Anna) to be sitting in the one restaurant in the town when Taven walked in. Before I even had time to call his name, he turned with a huge smile and wave, and ran over to give me a huge hug. That afternoon and evening I got to hang with a star! I sat in the audience www.FountainValleyMagazine.net

Sweetheart Screening is Feb. 6 for the almost-3-hour show, mesmerized, through huge smiles, laughs and tears, watching this kid work his element! As I said, it should be a teacher’s greatest dream to witness their student’s success. What a dream turned reality! Forty-two shows later, Taven is back in Fountain Valley. . . but this teacher is certainly staying on the edge of his seat. No doubt, I will be sitting in this kiddo’s audience for countless shows ahead! Bravo, Taven. Bravo! We are all so proud. ~Kevin Tison

Taven wins ‘Best Actor’

Fountain Valley Living Magazine salutes Fountain Valley’s Taven Blanke, who has been voted “Best Actor in a Musical or Revue” for his performance in “Billy Elliot—The Musical,” which was staged by Goodspeed Musicals this past summer and fall. Regional productions, touring shows, and more were all included, honoring productions that opened between Oct. 1, 2018 and Sept. 30, 2019.

Recently retired FVPD Capt. Rob Sweaza continues focus on the emotional welfare of law enforcement officers. By CURT SEEDEN Fountain Valley Living Magazine

ountain Valley Police Capt. Rob Sweaza retired in December after three decades in law enforcement, but he’s not stepping back from his passion for the welfare of law enforcement officers. He’s pushing forward ... Sweaza, who spent 22 years with the Fountain Valley Police Department, is working on his second master’s degree in social work with an emphasis on first responders and their families. Among other things, he has been inspired by Blue H.E.L.P., a nonprofit organization that advocates for those suffering from post-traumatic stress and acknowledges the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers lost to suicide. “I work a lot with employers to set up an emotional wellness program,” Sweaza said. “Law enforcement has been getting better in the last decade on wellness issues. That’s my goal in retirement. “Historically, cops didn’t want to say they had a problem. In the 30 years of my career, I’ve seen a lot of change in how departments address mental illness,” Sweaza said. “My main focus is wellness training for officers.” Sweaza’s wife, Kristen, is equally passionate about the issue. She formed an organization called “Blue Wives Matter,” a support group for wives and children of officers who have committed suicide. In his many positions with the FVPD, Sweaza has stepped up for families, for those in need, and for the innocent. He says his most rewarding work has been dealing with crimes against children. “It’s the most difficult and most challenging but at the same time, the most rewarding,” he said. Sweaza was assigned to General Investi-

gations and to the Sexual Assault and Youth Crimes desk in 2002. In 2003, he was voted Officer of the Year by the Fountain Valley Police Officers Association.

He was promoted to sergeant in 2006 and returned to the Patrol Division. He received a Medal for Lifesaving in 2010, and in 2012 was promoted to lieutenant, overseeing the Traffic Bureau.

In 2015 he returned to the Detective Bureau as the bureau commander and in 2016 he returned to the Patrol Division. Sweaza was promoted to captain and became Patrol Division commander in 2018. Noted Police Chief Kevin Childe during his recognition comments about Sweaza at the Nov. 19 council meeting: “On the way to work last Friday, I was driving my sons, Jeremy and Owen, to school. They asked me if I had to work, and I said, ‘Yes, I was on my way to work. I had something very important to do. I was working on a speech for Rob Sweaza,’ and they started laughing. “They said, ‘We thought he retired.’ I said, ‘He did. He retired this month, and now we are going to recognize him,’” Childe explained. “I asked both my sons, ‘What should I say?’ The 10-year-old . . .immediately said, ’He helps people.’ My son, Jeremy, the-13-year old, was in the back seat. He said, ‘No, Dad. He helps families.’”

Monarch Butterfly Day is May 2

OC Parks invites children and families to learn all about Monarch butterflies and their natural habitat during the 11th annual Monarch Butterfly Day on May 2 at Mile Square Regional Park. Activities will include interpretive presentations, children's crafts, face painting and a balloon artist. The event is recommended for ages 4 to 12. Monarch Butterfly Day is set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event and parking are free. Food trucks will be on site. The State Legislature in 2004 ap-

proved Senate Concurrent Resolution 66, declaring Feb. 5, 2004, and subsequent anniversaries to be California Western Monarch Day. Mile Square Regional Park is one of the only places in Orange County that has an official Monarch Butterfly Day. For more information, call the park office at (714) 973-6600.

FV GIRL SCOUTS EARN

irl Scouts of Orange County have recognized five Fountain Valley Girl Scouts who earned the Gold Award in 2019. To earn the Gold Award, Girl Scouts typically spend one to two years exploring the root cause of a local or global issue (such as poverty, education, or the environment) and partner with the community to create solutions. Girl Scouts who earn the Gold Award distinguish themselves in the college admission process and receive scholarships from colleges and universities across the country. Additionly, Gold Award Girl Scouts who join the military are eligible to enlist at a higher pay grade. "We are so proud of what these remarkable young women have accomplished,” said Girl Scouts of Orange County CEO Vikki Shepp. “They are problem-solvers who have demonstrated extraordinary leadership to change their community and our world forever. They are poised to continue creating groundbreaking solutions long into the future.”

Gold Award honorees are:

MALIA CORTEZ, 18, Troop 458 Project Title: The Meaning Behind the Motions Malia wanted to create awareness around the significance of the Memorial Day holiday. To do this, she created and distributed an educational Memorial Day booklet to about 2,500 middle school students. Malia also planned a Memorial Day event with the city of Fountain Val18

ley and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). She collaborated with a team to create a timeline, budget and plan to execute the event. Malia’s Memorial Day event plan can be utilized again in the future. Her booklet has also been electronically distributed to schools throughout the school district for future use. K AHLEN DO, 16, Troop 963 Project Title: Diabetes and Healthy Eating Kahlen wanted to address the issue of childhood obesity and diabetes. She felt there was a strong correlation between obesity and diabetes and the growing number of children attached to their digital devices and lacking regular physical and outdoor activity. Kahlen traveled to three different elementary schools in her community where she taught children the importance of being physically active on a regular basis. She also shared about healthy eating habits and food choices. Kahlen worked with the Children’s Diabetes Foundation to carry out her project. TIFFANY HOANG, 16, Troop 2279 Project Title: Healthy Smile Tiffany wanted to raise awareness about the prevalence of poor dental health among children. With the help of Fountain Valley Leo

Fountain Valley Living Magazine

Club, her dentist and her orthodontist, Tiffany organized weekly workshops at two Boys and Girls Club locations. These workshops aimed to educate children about the importance of maintaining healthy teeth. Tiffany participated in a children’s community fair where she had a booth and shared how to implement healthy dental hygiene. Tiffany also created a website to reach more families who may be interested in learning more about her project. BAO-TRAN NGUYEN, 16, Troop 21004 Project Title: STEM Family Night Bao-Tran held a STEM Family Night at DeMille Elementary School to give young children in-depth knowledge of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math while having fun. The event included 12 STEM stations. The students and parents learned more about STEM and were introduced to careers in STEM. DeMille Elementary School will continue to carry out STEM Family Night annually and share it with other elementary schools in Westminster School District. MICHELLE TO, 15, Troop 1956 Project Title: Buddies Against Bullying Michelle wanted to be the voice of, and create a safer environment for, students with special needs. She organized a bullying prevention workshop with Southland Integrated Services to increase awareness and acceptance of special needs students. Nearly 100 students participated in the workshop. Student clubs will sponsor an anti-bullying month each year and unite other schools and clubs to further educate and raise awareness of bullying prevention. www.FountainValleyMagazine.net

hen Louis and Melissa Goodmon put their home up for sale, they had no idea just how desirable a property they had. Their home at 10572 Morning Glory Circle is in the Lark Village tract. It backs to Edinger Avenue, just east of Ward Street, and offers four bedrooms with just under 1,700 square feet of living space on one level. The view of Mile Square Park, across the street from their back yard, is unobstructed. SUSAN SAURASTRI They listed it on Friday for $848,900. On Sunday, the first open house garnered more than 40 potential buyers. By Wednesday Louis and Melissa were reviewing nine offers. The majority were considerably over list price. Just one week from the day I listed their home for sale we opened escrow. The buyer paid $870,000. Their result reflects the beautiful condition of the property and the scarce inventory of homes available for sale in Fountain Valley. The Multiple Listing Service remains the Holy Grail of real estate to area agents. This week, the MLS is reflecting only 16 single-family homes available for sale in the city of Fountain Valley. A measly seven condos and townhomes have for-sale signs around town. 20

FEBRUARY 2020

There’s another single-level home with 1,800 square feet of living space. It also features four bedrooms. It also backs to a major street. The list price is well above that of the Goodmons' home, and it’s been on the market for three months. Why has one property sold so quickly, and the other hasn’t? A homebuyer usually forms an opinion about a home within the first 60 seconds. The initial visual impact is impressive or disappointing. If the place is cluttered, shows wear and tear, or needs repairs, the desirability factor declines. Comparison shopping is not confined to groceries. When comparing properties, the home that has been recently painted, and professionally staged and photographed is the one that will attract considerable interest, garner the most offers—and sell for top dollar in the shortest timeline. If you plan to sell a rental property, you’ll be saving time, money and aggravation by giving notice to the tenants to vacate. Many tenants are not motivated to move and will make it more difficult to show the home to potential buyers. Some tenants sabotage the showings by intentionally creating messy conditions. Have the home professionally cleaned and then market it in the same manner you would sell your principle residence. Whichever shoes you’re wearing this year, as a home seller or a

Fountain Valley Living Magazine

homebuyer, due diligence is your friend. A savvy couple in the Rancho Mesa tract at Talbert Avenue and Ward Street consulted with me recently. They don’t plan to sell their home until April but invited me to tour it and provide them with suggestions on what items should be addressed now and how to emphasize the home’s best features when the time comes to market it. They are practicing the six p’s— proper prior planning prevents poor performance. It’s likely they will reap the rewards. So can you. A closer look at trees in

By CURT SEEDEN Fountain Valley Living Magazine

Fountain Valley NEWS YOU CAN USE

id you know that Fountain Valley is a “Tree City U.S.A.?” Tree City U.S.A. is a national program, sponsored by the National Arbor Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service. The program recognizes communities for environmental improvement and higher levels of tree care. Trees are important to Fountain Valley. Just take a look at our parks, medians and public areas. The city’s Tree Program provides several tree services through the city’s Landscape Division and private contractors. These services include scheduled and unscheduled trimming, root pruning, removal, replacement, reforestation, inspection, pest control, and emergency response within the public right-of-way. Reforestation, tree maintenance and neighborhood beautification efforts are ongoing and are part of the city's annual budgets. The city’s tree foreman is a certified arborist, and the city’s tree trimmers are certified in tree maintenance.

WHAT ABOUT YOUR PARKWAY TREE IN FRONT OF YOUR HOUSE? Parkway trees in neighborhoods are important for curb appeal, neighborhood appearance and urban forestation. Did you know that all our residential parkway trees also count toward us earning the "Tree City U.S.A." designation? Residents can arrange to have a parkway tree

planted in front of their homes. In fact, for only $35, the city will purchase, deliver and plant a new parkway tree in in front of your house. But understand that the tree is now the property of the homeowner. The property owner is responsible for its watering, trimming and onging maintenance, as well as removal of weeds and debris from around the tree. Keep your parkway tree properly trimmed and healthy. The city only controls the rightof-way for street, sidewalk, and utility purposes, but does not own your home's land. The city will, however, trim the parkway trees if the homeowner has not kept an appropriate clearance for pedestrians and vehicular traffic. Who is the responsible party if a parkway tree falls and damages a parked car? Answer: The homeowner. A tree that is inspected regularly and kept trimmed and watered 24

&

is far less likely to fall, so be sure to keep your parkway tree properly maintained. Go to the city website, www.fountainvalley.org and check out the city’s Parkway Tree Policy, which is full of facts about trees in the city. There is also an “authorized tree list” on the city's website for parkway trees (just type in the search bar “tree list”) that tells you which kinds of trees are acceptable for your parkway. Residents interested in having a parkway tree planted can stop by the Public Works counter in City Hall, 10200 Slater Ave., or call (714) 593-4433.

FOUNTAIN VALLEY SENIOR HEALTH

Food-prepping talent helped get her back on track

In our culture, it’s hard to say no. Camelia Bennani shares how she balanced her Moroccan heritage with her desire to be healthy. “When I grew up in the Bay area, my mother owned a catering business. Helping her, I learned KATHLEEN ROCKNEY how to prep food and how to serve it.” At home, her culture encouraged a French-influenced diet of protein and sweets. Camelia’s body rebelled. While a freshman in college, a friend took a photo that shocked Camelia into finally admitting she was carrying 40-50 extra pounds on her tiny 5-foot, 2-inch frame. She’d been in denial. She asked her school counselor,

along with her physical education teacher and some trusted friends how she could change her food habits. His advice included encouraging her to go to Weight Watchers for structure and education. It made sense! What's more, her food prepping skills allowed Camelia to eat this new way, even while on the go. But family didn’t understand her need to eat differently, and she struggled with saying, “I’m sorry but I need to do this for me.” It took some years, and some gentle educating to open her family’s mind to a different way of eating. After graduating with a master’s degree from a dental school, Camelia became the COO for a multi-location dental practice. Her life was packed and food was eaten on the go. She soon experienced weight gain, fatigue, brain fog and eventually, thyroid issues.

Resuming her food prepping, she got back on track. Southern California was her dream location for staying healthy and for starting a family. So, Camelia and her new husband left the north and her lucrative career, to move south. Camelia knew she could easily get a job in dental management, but a spark of a dream inside her said, “Let’s create a restaurant that is based on meal prepping with healthy ingredients that allow hundreds of combination options—and let’s make it reasonable. Even student-budget reasonable!” Camelia blesses her mother for teaching her how to meal prep, and now she does it for hundreds—even with a bit of a Moroccan flair! Hyundai’s 60-second ad that will run in the first quarter of the Feb. 2 game in Miami will feature a cast of well-known Boston celebrities including Chris Evans, John Krasinski, Saturday Night Live alum Rachel Dratch, and Boston Red Sox legend David Ortiz. Chris Evans is a well-known actor who stars in both commercial and independent films, as well as an upcoming Apple+ show that he produced as well. He will be making his first appearance in a Super Bowl commercial. John Krasinski is an award-winning actor and filmmaker who has written, starred in and directed numerous critically acclaimed TV shows and movies. Popular comedian and actress Rachel Dratch was a widely recognized Saturday Night Live cast member. Since leaving SNL, she has guest-starred on several popular TV shows, including "Shameless" and "Bob's Burgers." David Ortiz, nicknamed "Big Papi," is a Boston Red Sox legend who was a three-time World Series champion and a 10-time All-Star. "Casting is such a critically important part of the ad, and we found four celebrities who worked perfectly together and made our creative concept come to life brilliantly," said Angela Zepeda, CMO, Hyundai Motor America." Hyundai's Super Bowl commercial will also mark the beginning of a national advertising campaign for the new 2020 Sonata. The Sonata is Hyundai's longest-standing and most successful model. www.FountainValleyMagazine.net

Fountain Valley: Look Back

The people behind the names of Fountain Valley streets

Namesakes around The Nice Place

Ever wonder who your street was named after? Here's a sampling of our streets' history... Fountain Valley’s pioneers can be remembered in many ways, but none more evident than by streets named after them. Author Marvin Carlberg, back in April of 1978, came up with a street name primer that also serves as a “who was who” Fountain Valley history lesson. For instance, ever wonder how Bushard Street got its name? BUSHARD STREET In the 1860s, John B. Bushard moved to California and established a business of hauling goods from Bakersfield to both the Los Angeles area and Prescott, Arizona, Carlberg wrote. He invested in real estate and at one time owned 1,800 acres of the Bolsa Ranch in Huntington Beach. He raised celery, sugar beets and beans on 190 acres of his land. 34

ELLIS AVENUE is named after James

S. Ellis who purchased land on the Irvine Ranch. Ellis’ wife was known for owning greyhound dogs. NEWLAND STREET William Taylor Newland, for whom Newland Street is named, farmed 1,000 acres he purchased from another county pioneer, Abel Stearns. Newland built the Newland House in 1898 near today's Beach Boulevard and Adams Street in Huntington Beach. Carlberg wrote that the Newland House is the oldest house in Surf City. The Newland House was declared a historical site in 1976 and underwent a restoration. SLATER AVENUE is named for William F. Slater, who owned farming property in Huntington Beach in the area known as Wintersburg in the early 1900s.

TALBERT AVENUE Thomas Talbert

was an Orange County pioneer and was Fountain Valley’s first postmaster. However, the U.S. Postal Department rejected the name, “Fountain Valley”Post Office because officials didn’t like long, twoword names. So, the post office became the Talbert Post Office. Fountain Valley was thus called Talbert during that time. Talbert is the author of a book written in 1952, titled, “My Sixty Years in California.” WARNER AVENUE And finally, Warner Avenue is named for E.G. Warner, who was a rancher and at one point a member of the Santa Ana City Council. —Curt Seeden Photo: City Historian Dann Gibb sells retired street signs as a fundraiser for the Historical Society.
