WEEK 6 LOGBOOK

Soffit describes the underside of any construction element.

Eave A rafter is one of a series of sloped structural members that extend from the ridge or hip to the wall plate, downslope perimeter or eave, and that are designed to support the roof deck and its associated loads.

Purlin

The eaves are the bottom edges of a roof. The eaves normally projects beyond the side of the building, forming an overhang to throw water clear of the walls and may be highly decorated as part of an architectural style such as the Chinese dougong bracket systems.

Cantilever A cantilever is a beam anchored at only one end. The beam carries the load to the support where it is forced against by a moment and shear stress. Cantilever construction allows for overhanging structures without external bracing. Cantilevers can also be constructed with trusses or slabs.

A purlin is any longitudinal, horizontal, structural member in a roof except a type of framing with what is called a crown plate. In traditional Timber framing there are three basic types of purlin: purlin plate, principal purlin and common purlin.

Portal frame Portal frames are generally low-rise structures, comprising columns and horizontal or pitched rafters, connected by moment-resisting connections. Portal frames are very efficient for enclosing large volumes, therefore they are often used for industrial, storage, retail and commercial applications as well as for agricultural purposes.
