MASTER of DESIGN THESIS For my master thesis I had an opportunity to work along the World Design Organization (WDO). WDO uses design as a core tool to work towards the betterment of the world. World Design Capital (WDC) is one programme that WDO has developed which utilizes design to imrpove social, economic and environment development of cities. WDC focuses on United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and in particular SDG 11 which is called development of Sustainable cities and communities.
RESEARCH QUESTION and AIM
How can World Design Capital programme improve in incorporating Sustainable Development Goal 11 : Sustainable Cities & Communities to assist cities with sustainable development ? The aim is to find ways city can improve in implementing strategies that can lead to sustainable development.

FUTURE DIRECTION
Supporting new design strategies and ideas to cities
WDC DESIGN STRATEGIES Briefly explaining the areas that I studied for my thesis. I thoroughly investigated six themes that WDC look at for city’s sustainable development. These included inhabitant, public space, environment, identity and economy. The ideas was to see their relation with sustainable development and how these can assist in sustainable development.

WDC PAST CITIES The cities that have worked and benefited from the WDC programme were then studied to see how design has impacted the areas of social, economy and environmental areas. Taking these into considerations,
interviews
were
conducted with experts who have worked in these cities. From the interviews, I developed series of guidelines that answered my thesis question.

BOOK ARTS LAB Designing a Book Arts Lab for Carleton University was first design research project that was carried out. It involve series of research methods which included user observations, user testing, participatory sessions, interviews and final prototype development. The aim of the was project to understand different design methos and how they can help us in future.
MASSEY LIBRARY UNIVERSITY of TORONTO
The original project inspiration was established through studing Massey College Library at the University of Toronto that holds a prestigious printing house. Carleton University plans to develop its own printing house ( book arts lab) and wanted to examine the ways, problems and solutions.

RESEARCH and OBSERVATION PHASE 1
The first phase of the design project was to study what is book arts lab. This started by a visit to Book arts Lab at Massey College. We had the opportunity to understand what is book arts lab and what are the main requirments of a book arts lab. Afterwards, we had series of workshops at Carleton University to understand how some of the book arts lab componenets work. Such as the processes behind printing presses, book binding and paper printing proesses. Futhermore, we had the opportunity to do indiviudal research on the processes and requirments of book arts lab. From there on we established key findings to take us forward in the next steps of the design research project. The following images highlight some of the elements studied through phase 1 of the research.

MODEL DEVELOPMENT PHASE 2
Based on the observations done through visiting different book arts lab, talking to experts that have worked in book arts labs and individiual research, a rough model was developed that was to be used in the next stage of the research study which was called participatory session. The model developmented was based on the area provided to us where book arts lab would be created which in the first floor of Carleton university’s library. Different components were developed such printing presses, tables, chairs, sinks and machines that were all part of a book arts lab.

PARTICIPATORY SESSION PHASE 3
The next day, a participatory session was carried out where three different experts that have worked in book arts lab came to provide their insights and ideas on the ways that we could create our book arts lab prototype. The experts played with arranging different book art labs components accordingly to the space provided. The space was divided into three different areas which includes learning classroom, exhibition space and a workshop. Each expert focused on certain area to provide their key insights and ideas. Their insights were written down, recorded and analyzed for the next stage.

BOOK ART AREA DEVELOPMENT PHASE 4
Based on the insights
collected
from the experts through the participatory session, the process of developing the book arts space was implemented. Since each expert had different perspective and feedback, their ideas were further studied and combined to develop the space. The plan highlights the overall findings of what the potenial book art space will be like. Master of Design Portfolio Page . 13
FINAL PROTOTYPE PHASE 5
After collecting and analyzing the insights, a final prototype model was created. The final model highlighted the main findings that were established through the analyzation. The above images highlight of what the final book arts lab area would look like. It will have the main features which included, classroom, exhibtion and as well a workshop area. ECHOES & ARCHITECTURE The idea of the project was to examine different buildings that explore sound of echoes and architecture. These building examples would include of religious sacred buildings, music theatres and open spaces or any architectural piece where there is a relationship between architecture and sound of echo.
THE PANTHEON ROME, ITALY
The aim of the project was to design an architectural concept that focused more on the aural of space rather than the visual. The project began by exploring Pantheon. Although, the Pantheon is know for its history and architecture, it was interesting to explore the acoustic of its space.

DEVELOPMENT through INSPIRATIONS The following two pages explore the architecture examples that were studied in developing and experimenting the concept of echo architecture. The first example is called TvĂsĂśngur, located in Iceland. This mushroom-looking sculpture is actually interconnected domes in different sizes that create vivid echo sounds. The second example is called Le Cylindre Sonore located in Paris. Designed by Bernhard Leitner, the architecture piece creates an atmosphere of sounds that resonates within the space that showcases the power sound and space can possess altogether. These examples helped in defining my concept.

CONCEPT PLANS DEVELOPMENT
THE PLANS - 4 layers - top vie
I started developing concept plans of the architecture space I had in mind. The space would have four floors where each floor would consist of walkable area that would extend towards the centre. The area would work as a focal point where individuals would create sound that can create echo.

EXTERNAL & INTERNAL The concept was finalized by establishing the section of the building space, external and internal visualizations and renders. Furthermore, to test whether echo sound would be created in the space, reverberation and sound calculations were conducted.

DIGITAL ART Developing digital art through Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator software is a new set of skill that I am experimenting and practicing. This page and the following pages show some of my recent digital art that I have created using various tools available within the software of Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.
