Turf Talk FROM THE GOLF COMMITTEE

LAKEWOODOAKSCC.COM

From the General Manager, Mark Reid Starting the first week of August with a week of wonderful weather was a good thing. July was a bit difficult for all of us with the excessive heat and deluge of rain. The outlook is good going into September. As most of you know, we have now completed the re-design and installation of the cart path at #10 Tee Box. The new concrete path is now at an optimum slope with plenty of width at the entry way to safely accommodate cart traffic at the upper and lower tee boxes. This project originated out of an emergency need to dig up the 24” storm water pipe that was originally installed over 40 years ago and had completely rusted

out at the bottom of the pipe. The pipe had also separated at the top of the hill and a large, cavernous void was created under the cart path in several locations. We were pleased to be able to get the new path installed ahead of the additional 10 inches of rain we saw after putting in the new pipe. Once we complete removing several trees around the path and scoreboard area, we will backfill the area with topsoil and then install new sod. We believe the functionality, appearance and better view of #10 from the Clubhouse will be well received. We will continue our improvements through the end of summer, which include resurfacing the cart path at the exit of #10 and replacing the fence along #13 at the wall on Northgate Crossing. This new fence will be a black metal fence that matches the fencing along the wall at #13 green.

We continue to have a wonderful summer. Our Monday tournaments are ramping back up and will be an important source of 3rd quarter revenue after a void in cancelled or deferred tournaments during the 2nd quarter. My hat goes off to our professional golf staff who have stayed steady and customer focused in adverse conditions and risen to each and every challenge presented to them. I am proud to congratulate Sheri Rehmer on winning the MGA Women’s Championship and holding on her title for another year. Well played by all with some very competitive and exciting rounds of golf. Additional pride and congratulations goes out to our 2020 MGA Senior Champion, Roy Wall.

The celebration of family, a tradition of civility and a commitment to excellent facilities and services will always be the hallmarks of Lakewood Oaks Country Club. Members embrace a shared tradition of 651 NE St. Andrews Circle Lee’s Summit, MO 64064 816.373.2505 LakewoodOaksCC.com

Taking Care of Our Cart Paths

These paths were only in use for four days! You can obviously see that cart traffic can negatively impact course conditions. That is why we continue to stress the importance of following cart regulations.

Here is a brief rundown of cart regulations for the next few months: • Carts on path only on all Par 3’s, as well as Hole #3 and Hole #15 • Do not drive in the rough before you pass the enter sign • Only drive carts in fairway during the play of a hole • Park your cart in the fairway and walk into the rough to search for a ball or hit your shot • Once you reach the exit sign on a hole, return to cart path • Keep all four tires on path around greens and tees • Near #7 tee, do not “take a shortcut” on the south side of the tee • Do not drive carts on sidewalks or in homeowners’ yards With just a little conscious effort out on the golf course, we can assure better playing conditions. Your fellow members will appreciate it.

Brian welcome all questions and suggestions, so feel free to contact him 816.541.2455 or brian@logc.org.

Wine of the Month BALLARD LANE CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2017 FROM PASO ROBLES, CENTRAL COAST, CALIFORNIA

First, a little history of the area. A former Wells Fargo stagecoach stop, the town of Ballard was founded in 1880 with lofty dreams of being a future metropolis. Ballard was named for William Ballard, who ran the Wells Fargo station from 1862 to 1870. Although Ballard served as the connection point between rural and seaside communities, it never grew in mass like its neighbor Santa Barbara, and is now much as it was over 100 years ago. Today, Ballard is a combination of sleepy village and upscale bedroom community. The surrounding area is noted for its thriving and wellrespected wine industry and was featured in the Academy Award nominated film "Sideways." Vineyards, coastal bluffs and ranches merge seamlessly together through roads the locals call "lanes." Ultimately, many of these paths end up in Ballard. The Ballard Lane wines are a reflection of the Miller Family, a Central Coast family who has farmed the area for five generations. Their proprietary knowledge of the climate and terroirs of the Central Coast are reflected in each bottle of Ballard Lane wine. Their Ballard Lane Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 is one of their most popular wines. This wine can be mesmerizing, with rich aromas and flavors of blackberry, cassis, black cherry, graphite, toasty oak, vanilla and spice. The structure and balance of this wine impresses from first sip to last.

If you haven’t tried this wine, you’re in for a treat. Stop by the Argyle and have a glass. Sip, visit, enjoy!

Carole Gray LAKEWOOD OAKS COUNTRY CLUB FEATURED ARTIST

During the months of July and August, you can view some thought provoking and beautiful art by Carole Gray. Carol’s painting technique involves using either transparent or opaque layers of color in oils or more isolated color fields in acrylic. The two techniques sometimes overlap creating exquisite art.

Carole’s influence comes from the environment, architecture, other artists, concepts, news, everyday ordinary things and monumental events. Carole’s work tends to focus on natural shapes, patterns from nature and random ideas that come to her attention, sometimes when least expected. She likes detail, chaos and ambiguity; rearranging objects and shapes in unfamiliar ways. Carole’s influence comes from the environment, architecture, other 16 LAKEWOOD OAKS COUNTRY CLUB

artists, concepts, news, everyday ordinary things and monumental events. Her paintings are usually presentational with varying degrees of abstraction, and her work is centered on the interconnectivity of all things to their surroundings. Carole builds what she enjoys and hopes to provide a new idea or experience for the viewer. Carole attended Ohio University studying art, earned a BA Degree in

Studio Art from UMKC and has an Associate Degree in Vet Technology from Maple Woods Community College. We invite you to stop by the Lakewood Oaks Country Club and experience Carole Gray’s art.
