September 2020

From the General Manager, Mark Reid What a wonderful and fun summer. Being outdoors on the Golf Course was a virtual sanctuary away from COVID19. The care, respect and concern that everyone showed for each other this summer was impressive. Congratulations are in order for Mr. Michael Darden who is our new Men’s Club Champion. Some very impressive rounds of golf were played to earn this title while playing in a very competitive field of golfers. I also extend congratulations to Mrs. Terry Coates who is our Senior Women’s Club Champion this year. Very well played. The Lakewood Oaks Country Club Men’s Summer Classic was another fun and memorable event. Mr. Andy Cartwright and Mr. Randy Eaton were the winners of the overall event. I again want to thank Club Member and LPOA / LHC Board Member, Mr. Dwayne Saucier, for putting in the overtime to organize another very successful event. We are having a wonderful year and are looking forward to a beautiful fall golf season. This also brings budget time which begins now and culminates in November. During this period, we look at the current needs of the Club, as well as future planning. After receiving input from our membership, Golf Committee, Facilities Committee and Finance Committee, we package it all up and present it to the Board of Directors for review, at which time they will set and approve the operating budget for 2021.

We have been in the process of looking at a particular project that would enhance the outdoor Club experience. On the following pages, we have included some 3D renderings of an architectural design we are now in the process of getting a cost estimate on. The Board of Directors has reviewed this Phase 1 design and has directed staff to go to Phase 2 and obtain overall project costs. This in no way represents a commitment, at this point in time, to do the project, yet it does allow for our membership to view the design during this phase and submit feedback to management. We would love to hear from you as this would be a big and important step forward. Please send any comments to mark@logc.org so I can compile them and present them to the Board.

It is tough to believe that we are on the backside of the 2020 golf season. Even as the days get shorter, we are adding more golf events. We will continue to plan and host golf events until participation levels drop or the weather stops us. We will send out information on events as they are set, so keep an eye out for upcoming events. One change that has been lost in the hectic circumstances this year was the adjustment to the World Handicap System. With almost a full season under our belt, the Handicap Committee will be going to working on USGA recommendations. Here is a quick overview of what they will be looking at over the next few months. The members of a Golf Club depend on the Handicap Committee to: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9.

Establish a Handicap Committee. Ensure the Club meets the definition of a Golf Club. Know the Rules of Handicapping. Educate and communicate the Rules of Handicapping to members. Ensure course details are accurate (Type 1 Club). Make the process of converting a Handicap Index to a Course Handicap™ as easy as possible. Facilitate the timely submission of scores. Maintain accurate player scoring records. Apply applicable penalty scores and adjust the Handicap Index of any member whose Handicap Index does not reflect their demonstrated ability. 10. Perform annual handicap reviews. If you have any questions about handicaps or would like to serve on the Handicap Committee, please let us know. Brian welcome all questions and suggestions, so feel free to contact him 816.541.2455 or brian@logc.org.

Wine of the Month RODNEY STRONG CABERNET SAUVIGNON DRY. BIG AND BOLD.

Their story began over 55 years ago, when a celebrated American dancer named Rod Strong settled in Sonoma County to pursue a second lifelong creative passion: winemaking. Rodney Strong Vineyards was the 13th winery bonded in the newly discovered Sonoma County wine industry. A trio of winemaking paths crossed when Rick Sayre joined the team as Winemaker in 1979, and again when the Klein Family, 4th generation California farmers, purchased the winery in 1989 and initiated a renewed commitment of modern artisan winemaking. Through the years, Rodney Strong Vineyards has earned the reputation for critically acclaimed Single Vineyard and Reserve wines, stand out Estate releases and best-in-class Sonoma County varietal wines. Rodney Strong received the honor of being named Wine Enthusiast’s American Winery of the Year in 2013. Introduced in 2000, each year the Wine Enthusiast honors those that have impacted the wine and spirits industry with their Wine Star Awards. With the designation of American Winery of the Year, the Wine Enthusiast has recognized Rodney Strong’s commitment to quality, luxury and Sonoma County. Rodney Strong Cabernet Sauvignon is grown in the rugged, rocky hills and valleys of the warmest regions in Sonoma County where rich and distinct Cabernet Sauvignon thrives. It’ rich with dark cherry, plum and baking spices. The delicious fruit is accompanies by crushed violet and black pepper notes. The palate has medium tannins, lingering spicy oak flavors and a lush finish. A wine to be enjoyed with beef, duck and wild game. You’re invited to join us at The Argyle where you can order your favorite meal and pair it with a glass or bottle of Rodney Strong Cabernet Sauvignon.

Fall is one of my favorite times of the year for cooking. The colors, textures and flavors are varied and outstanding. Root vegetables such as carrots, squash, pumpkin and sweet potatoes provide for a variety of tastes. Broccoli, spinach, kale, artichokes, Brussel sprouts or apples are also fall favorites. In addition, whole grains like brown rice, quinoa, oats and millet, along with legumes of beans chickpeas, lentils and soybeans provide great flavors and vitamins. Combine several of these foods and you’ve got a great fall dish. Here’s to your health!

Janet Beebe LAKEWOOD OAKS COUNTRY CLUB FEATURED ARTIST Janet Beebe, @theLAKE, is known to many Lakewood residents as our dedicated “sunrise” photographer. Every morning one or more of her pictures are posted on Lakewood Yes Facebook page of that morning’s sunrise. The morning colors, silhouettes, wildlife, and marina scenes Janet shares with us are unique and always a welcome surprise as we sip our coffee. During the months of September and October you can enjoy Janet’s photos on display in the Argyle Gallery. Seriously, why would anyone get up that early to take pictures of a sleepy Lakewood sunrise every morning without fail? Janet recalls getting up before dawn for thirty years, in order to beat the traffic to her job as a dental assistant on the Plaza. When she retired, the early morning habit stuck. Janet has taken photos around Lakewood for years, starting with family pictures of her two children. Both were talented swimmers, and Janet religiously recorded swim meets with her camera. Turf Talk

STEVE GRIESINGER, COURSE SUPERINTENDENT

Well, we made it to September. Whew! One might say it was a pretty easy summer with nice amounts of rain and not too many days over 90 degrees. As this is true, we did have our share of issues with extreme humidity. As you noticed in late July to early August, the greens

got real soft and became what we call ‘puffy’. Then our greens mowers began scalping, causing damage. After some aggressive top-dressing, verti-cutting, and a radical mower adjustments, the greens started to come out of it and recover. So that is why we are extremely ready to aerify the greens in September. This will also help relieve the compaction from the extra

foot traffic we encountered from the more than normal rounds of play this year. Aerification is scheduled for September 14. Barring any weather and/or mechanical issues, we should finish up on the September 15. See you on the course.
