The Ripples // November 2021
MKT-06089-0618 Tracking # 1-745751 (Exp. 8/20)
November From the General Manager, Mark Reid
We have completed the Finance Committee and Facilities Development review of the proposed 2022 budget. This was a fantastic process which allowed us to gain the consensus of both committees and submit a balanced budget to the Board of Directors for their review, comments, and direction in their November meeting. The committees have recommended two amenity additions that have been discussed for the past three years. One item is a new synthetic turf play park to be located at the East Lake Pool Facility grounds at Channel and Dick Howser Drive. The other item is a new three court, lighted pickle ball facility. This would allow for more play after the sun goes down and the summer temperatures lower. We are well into the fourth quarter of 2021 and all is going well. We are pleased to have completed the West Lake Marina dock replacement project and we are getting ready to order the final project docks which are D, E and F located at the east lake marina which we hope to receive and install in spring of 2022. Leading up to the October meeting, I had asked the Board of Directors for some additional direction on ways to enhance our lake speed enforcement. As most of you know, Lakewood lakes are “No Wake” lakes. In nautical terms this means that the speed on the lakes is to be 3 to 5 mph. However, under direction from a prior Board, we have allowed 10 mph to allow for a little bit more fun for children while still maintaining a safe and slow speed lake experience. The Board of Directors reaffirmed this in their October 2021 meeting. When I brought this to the Boards attention, 5 or 10 mph was not the issue. I wanted to explore a better way to enforce the speed limit and deter the few who like to go faster. Having solely the Summer Staff try to visually determine if a wave produced by a boat’s wake was too large and is perceived to be speeding is not the best way to enforce this practice. In conclusion, the boat speed of 10 mph on the lakes remains unchanged and we will be exploring some great technology to be able to record the speed of boats from the shoreline and bring our findings to the Board prior to next year’s boating season.

A friendly reminder, golf carts and other motorized vehicles including motorcycles are not allowed on the Chapel Ridge walking trail that runs from Fairway Homes Drive to Woods Chapel Road. We will be restricting access to this sidewalk and enforcing this with fines as this is not only illegal, but also it is truly a safety hazard to our members who enjoy walking on this amenity. Enjoy this wonderful Fall season.

Board of Directors’ Meeting Actions taken October 14, 2021
November represents the transition from the autumn harvest season to winter. It’s the month that hosts Thanksgiving, family, friends, and food. It’s also the month that many of us think about what we are thankful for which ignites feelings of gratitude. In these stressful times, I keep reading how expressing thankfulness and gratitude benefits us physically and emotionally. Regarding Lakewood, I’m grateful for many things, one of which is our COMMITTEES. Lakewood would not be the community we are today without our residents stepping up to the plate to volunteer their time to enhance LPOA. There are four kinds of LPOA committees: Administrative, Standing Advisory, Parcel, and if needed, an Ad Hoc advisory. Those four kinds are then broken down into 11 different committees, each with its own job description. Every committee contributes to this community in its own way with different time commitments. Every committee makes a difference. Often times our committees are not in the spotlight, but I know they are the backbone of this community. The board is thankful for the time you have given us. Please plan to attend the November 4, 7:00 p.m. Public Budget meeting at the clubhouse and see where your money goes. Happy Thanksgiving to all our residents.

How to Make a Yarn Pumpkin! BY: Debbie Chapman If you are looking for the cutest Thanksgiving decor as well as a way to keep the kids busy this fall season, this craft is perfect for you! Rip this page out of the Ripples and follow along for an hour of crafting fun! Here is what you will need: 21 pieces of orange yarn, cut to 36 inch lengths 2 ounces of white glue (I used glue from the dollar store) 1 balloon (12 inch size), blown up half full 1 brown pipe cleaner and 1 green pipe cleaner Follow these 10 simple steps: 1. I started by blowing up 12 inch balloons about half full. (If you make them too big, you will need more string.) 2. Cut out about 21 pieces of yarn about 36 inches long. 3. Tie one of the pieces of yarn to the end of the balloon. Open one of your kitchen cabinets and hang the balloon from the handle. (This will make the process way easier than doing this with the balloon on a flat surface, trust me!) 4. Pour the glue into a small bowl. It takes about one full 2 ounce bottle of glue per yarn pumpkin. (DO NOT DILUTE
tom of the balloon) and wind it around the balloon, making sure to press down the ends of the yarn to secure them when they’re in place. Repeat with the remaining pieces of yarn. 7. When you’re done, find somewhere to hang the yarn covered balloons to dry. (Put an old towel down incase a few drips of glue come down.) 8. Wait 24 hours for the glue to dry. Next, you need to make sure you press your fingers down under the yarn to detach the glue from the balloon – around the entire surface of the balloon. Do not skip! 9. Make a very small hole in the balloon close to where the knot is (it won’t pop if you cut it near the knot). You want the air to leak slowly so you can detach any yarn that you might have missed as it shrinks. Then pull deflated balloon out. 10. Make the pipe cleaner stem and vine by wrapping the pipe cleaners around your baby finger. The stem is just a spiral, so I tucked the end of the pipe cleaner into the yarn. I didn’t glue it on, I just tucked it in and it stayed in place. You’re done! Send a picture of your final product to rachel@lpoa.com! We love to see our activities in action! For questions visit: https://onelittleproject.com/yarn-pumpkins/
WITH WATER! If you want the pumpkins to be rock solid, try using slightly watered down Mod Podge.) 5. Dunk one of the pieces of yarn into the bowl of glue, and swirl it around gently with a plastic fork to get it completely covered with glue. Hold the end of the piece of yarn with your fingers, then gently run it between the tines of a fork to remove the excess glue. 6. Take the glue covered yarn strand and press the end down somewhere (I liked to either start at the top or the bot-
