January From the General Manager, Mark Reid

Starting a new year is wonderful as it brings new opportunities as well as new challenges. I watch in amazement at the rapid advances in medicine, general technology as well as space technology and exploration. 2022 holds many promising and historical moments to witness. Obviously, the headlines continue to be frequent regarding Covid 19 and associated variants. But the much larger reality is that we continue to advance to make our world a better place now and in the future. We have a busy 2022 here in Lakewood. We are now in the planning and procurement stage of multiple 2022 projects. We will be spending $1,360,366 on projects to improve the community. We have an additional carry over from 2021 of $476,635 that will be spent in 2022. Additionally, our reserves will increase to just under $2,000,000 by the end of 2022. We are in very good financial condition and in accordance with our Professional Reserve Study. I equate our operating conditions over the last two years of Covid 19 like walking along the beach. When you walk on sand that is compacted by the surf, it is smooth and easy walking. This period of Covid 19 more like walking in the soft sand that the surf can’t reach. You can still move forward at a pace you are comfortable with, but it takes a lot more energy. Hopefully, before too much longer, we can get out of the soft sand and onto the easier path of the compacted sand like we were used to. But until then, we will navigate the labor market, supply chain issues, inflation, and Covid while shooting for another excellent year making Lakewood an even better place to live.

We wish all of you a joyous and prosperous new year.

December Maintenance Update

22 November Community Service Report

From the Boardroom Kathleen Heydon, Board President We hope this year brings new goals, new successes, new joy, and new promises of a brighter tomorrow. Wishing you a year full of happiness and peace...Happy New Year 2022 from your LPOA/LHC Board of Directors. The Ripples is the Association’s official magazine. It is estimated the magazine could reach over 4000 residents per month. It is available in printed form as well as digital. Our goal is to have the printed copy to you by the 5th of the month. I am writing this article on the 12th of December and I’m still not in receipt of the December Ripples. The delay is not the result of LPOA not doing their due diligence to get the printed magazine to you promptly. For Rachel to get the printed Ripples to your doorstep it involves a 12 step process, which includes gathering the articles, which need to be submitted by the 15th(there are always the stragglers), getting all information to a vendor to create, organize, arrange advertisements, by the 20th, proofing, revisions, and then approval of printed proof. The magazine is printed by the 24-25th of each month, then heads to the addressing and mailing firm the 26-28, then it goes to the post office and is sent out bulk mail. In 2022 Rachel will be working on how to get the printed copy to you faster...if it’s even possible. The goal of Rachel Yaros, our Art and Communication Director, is to have it posted on the LPOA Official Facebook page @LakewoodPOA and LPOA.com by the first of the month. She does need to work around weekends and holidays, so sometimes it might not be exactly on the 1st day of the month. Rachel has made it more user-friendly to gain access to the Ripples on our website by not requiring you to sign in....LPOA.com/ Community/Ripples.

The Ripples // January 2022

The U.S. Postal Service is saying nearly 40% of first-class letters will take longer, at least 5 days, and bulk mailings even longer. Bulk mailings offer lower postage rates but have a longer delivery time. Typically you can expect delivery times to be 4-15 days and sometimes longer. We are at the mercy of the U.S. Postal Service. My suggestion, if you are frustrated about getting the information included in your printed Ripples so late, we all understand, please sign up to receive your Ripples digitally. We want to continue moving towards digital Ripples completely to lower costs and also become more ecofriendly. I encourage all residents to contact Rachel Yaros at Rachel@lpoa.com or call her at 816-373-4326 and let her know you would like to go digital so you can get all your information on time and not miss any events. There are always hard copies in the Lakewood Oaks clubhouse if you need one. Rachel is also working on making LPOA.com more userfriendly and better organized. Rachel keeps everyone in the loop with weekly email blasts if you have signed up for them. Contact Rachel@lpoa. com to get on the list. They always contain up-to-date and important information. If you think you have signed up but are not receiving them, please check your spam folder. If it’s not there, contact Rachel and get it handled.

Friendly Reminders • Keep your vehicles and homes locked. • Remove all valuables from your vehicle. • Keep an eye out for your neighbors. • Keep your area well lit up. • Always notify the Lee’s Summit police department first before any contact with Community Services. We need to keep the Lee’s Summit Police Department aware of issues in

Board of Directors’ Meeting our community. Our Community Service staff is not armed, has no authority to arrest anyone and we always have concern for their safety, especially at night. In the month of October, they made 1890 area checks along with everything else they are tasked with doing, storage lot openings, receiving calls, packet deliveries, I.D. checks, residence checks, marina gate openings, and ARB inspections. Currently, they are experiencing a staff shortage.

We need to work together as a team to help keep Lakewood safer.

I have enjoyed getting to know so many wonderful people and am proud to have been a part of the leadership for the past eight years. I’m running for Mayor as I am confident I can continue to make positive and necessary progress in the growth and development of our community.” Aside from her two terms as council member, Diane has served as the Community Service Director for the Rotary Club of Lee’s Summit, Chair of the Promotions Committee, and on the Board of Directors for Downtown Lee’s Summit Main Street, Chairman of the Board for the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce, and is a member of the Advisory Board for Saint Luke’s Hospital. Diane was first elected to City Council in 2014. In 2015, she was elected by her peers to serve as the Mayor Pro Tempore of the City Council. As a council member, Diane has also served in leadership roles as Chair of the Finance and Budget Committee, Chair of the Community and Economic Development Committee, Chair of the Homeless Coalition, along with multiple liaison assignments. “My work on the Finance and Budget Committee and the CEDC, has given me the experience and first-hand knowledge of where we have been, where we are going, and what is needed to get to the next level.” Diane’s passion for Lee’s Summit is unrivaled. In her time on the City Council, she has focused on responsible community growth, whether it be residential or commercial, and the need for additional and continual public input. Diane has never taken for granted the value of the numerous volunteers in Lee’s Summit and her leadership has been consistent with her values. “I love Lee’s Summit. History of Snow Fall in Kansas City, MO Article from Fox4KC

The first day of winter came on December 21, 2021. With that comes greater potential to see snow on our doorsteps. Lakewood Artist Exhibits Author: Patti Browder Two artists will display their art in the Argyle Gallery during the months of January and February. It’s always a pleasant surprise to see the early morning views of Lakewood from our “sunrise” photographer, Janet Beebe. Janet will once more be exhibiting her “Around the Lake” photos in the gallery and wants to wish everyone in Lakewood a very Happy New Year. We also welcome a new artist to the gallery. Julie Phillips has lived in Lakewood since 2000 and is founder of Phillips Insurance Agency. With a passion for art and learning, Julie studied speech

18

The Ripples // January 2022

pathology at CMSU, then obtained a BSE in theater, attended the Kansas City Art Institute, and achieved a Master’s Degree in Marketing from Rockhurst. Along her educational journey, Julie fell in love with the Impressionist Art Movement. She has studied and is strongly influenced by every impressionist artist between 1860-1864. Her mediums are oil, chalk and pencil. Julie loves to golf in Lakewood and play pool, when she’s not creating her next piece of art. Be sure to drop in to the Argyle for a hot toddy and an excellent dinner on a cold winter night, while enjoying the talents of two more Lakewood artists

David True Crime Fighter Turns Crime Writer Author: Patti Browder

Lakewood Artist Series

A place to present artists of all kinds and mediums. Did you know we have a real crime fighter right here in Lakewood? Lakewood resident David True retired in 2013 from an exciting (dangerous at times) career in investigation and law enforcement. David (Dave to his friends) started out as an Army Explosives Ordnance Disposal Specialist; spent several years in St. Louis law enforcement; 26 years with the ATFT; and another 13 years with Yellow/Roadway Corporation as a corporate security manager. He has pursued and investigated criminals throughout Missouri, with the purpose of being certain the “bad guys” were eventually locked away. Dave and his wife Kathy raised their family (Justin and Lauren) in Lakewood, moving here in 1976 and building a second home in 1988. They love the community for all the amenities, location, and the best neighbors.

He has pursued and investigated criminals throughout Missouri, with the purpose of being certain the "bad guys" were eventually locked away. Dave is still teaching and holding training workshops on security issues, but now devotes much of his time

to research and writing. His recent book Gangsters, Outlaws and Mobsters – A Missouri History of Twentieth Century Crimes and Criminals is an extraordinary compilation of high-profile criminal cases with ties to Missouri--Pretty Boy Floyd, Bonnie and Clyde, Machine Gun Kelly, and many more. His recount of local Kansas City crimes, such as “Union Station Massacre,” reveals details you may not have heard. His advice for anyone who wants to write a book is to “do their research, corroborate with experts, be persistent, and not waiver from their goal.” Dave admits there are other books in his future and intends to keep writing as long as he has stories to tell. You are invited to St. Andrews Pub on Saturday, January 22, 1:00-4:00 p.m. for a book signing event. Chat with David True about writing and Missouri criminal history, while he signs your copy of Gangsters, Outlaws and Mobsters.
