4 The Ripples // February 2023
From the General Manager, Mark Reid May In This Issue
The Annual Meeting was held last on Thursday, May 20, 2023, and it is clear that our Association and Community are in great shape. Thank you to all the members/ stakeholders who attended this important meeting.
President Terry White called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. and provided the annual update on the state of our Association and Country Club. Treasurer Kathleen Heydon provided the pleasing financial results for the 2022 fiscal year, and Secretary Debbie Stalnaker cast the proxy votes at the meeting and certified that the quorum requirements were met and the meeting was official. The only business item on the Agenda was the election of three new at large Directors. With six (6) wonderful and talented members running for three at-large seats, the results of the vote were sure to be bittersweet. Larry Pasquini of the Election Committee opened the sealed envelope send via US mail from Votenow.com and read the results aloud. The meeting adjourned at 7:10 p.m.
We want to extend our congratulations to Rob Regier, Kim Curran and Andrew Crocker as they acquired enough votes to be elected to the LPOA and LHC Board of Directors for the 2023 through 2026 term.
Ahead of the May Board meeting, we hope everyone extends their appreciation to President Terry White, Treasurer Kathleen Heydon and Director Brooke Beebe for their excellent service to our community. They will end their service for their past 3 year term at the end of “Old Business” in the May 11, 2023 Board Meeting. Your wisdom and leadership will be truly missed.
Looking Ahead
We making great progress on the repair of the Clubhouse. We have published on our website the plans and 3D renderings of the final improvements to the Main Floor Lobby and Office area. Construction continues at a good pace and should complete by September. With plans approved by the Board and funding provided by our insurers, we will now keep you posted on our progress and alert you as previously closed areas of the building open up for business.
The LPOA and LHC Staff wish all of our Lakewood moms a wonderful Mother’s Day. You deserve the best.

“The very best way to help yourself and your community is by becoming an active volunteer.”
If this had been any other spring, we would have held the annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner. However, it was anything but a regular Christmas Eve when the extreme cold and wind caused our fire suppression system to burst and result in great damage to the Lakewood Oaks Clubhouse. While we were unable to host our Volunteer Dinner at our usual date, we will be rescheduling it to September 20th, 2023.
Standing Committees, whether Advisory or Administrative, are a valuable resource to the LPOA. Committees provide an avenue of communication between the residents, the Board of Directors, and the General manager. Committee members are approved by the Board on a regular basis through Consent Agenda. We are all grateful for your time and energy. The Administrative Committees are permanent and

LPOA/LHC BOARD MEETINGS
A third, lesser used committee distinction, is an Ad-Hoc Committee, established temporarily for a very specific purpose, such as this year’s 50th Anniversary Committee.
This year the Board did not get the opportunity to say thank you in person to the almost eighty residents who serve on various committees. I am saying it now on the Board’s behalf. Lakewood is a better place to live because of the dedication and involvement of its residents. To every resident who has volunteered on any level in our community this year, thank you for your time and talent. You make a difference.

KATHRYN MESSICK
Lakewood Artist Chosen for Parade of Hearts
By Patti Browder Back
Once again, a talented Lakewood Artist has been chosen for a special recognition. Kathryn Messick was recently selected as one of 40 artists to participate in the 2023 KC Parade of Hearts
The “Parade of Hearts” is a project designed to unite the region through a widely visible public art experience. The heart has long been a part of Kansas City’s history and persona—reflecting both its central location and the sincerity in character of the mid-west population. Beginning in June 2021, artists across the region were invited to design one of the fiberglass hearts. The finished hearts are auctioned off to raise funds for the project’s charitable beneficiaries and then displayed in the KC area. Kathryn has lived in Lakewood for nine years with her husband and twin boys. Kathryn earned a BSED in k-12 Art and Design Education at Missouri State University and a MSED in Athletics and Activities Administration at William Woods. Just recently, she earned a second MSED in Special Education. Kathryn has been teaching Art Education and Social Science for 18 years and currently teaches at Bernard Campbell Middle School. She and her husband, Ryan, a teacher at Blue Springs South High School, also enjoy coaching athletics at their respective schools.
heart. Her website blog tells the journey she has followed from being selected for the Parade of Hearts, transporting the 120 lb. heart to her home, carefully fitting it through the door, and then securing it for sketching and painting. She describes the anxiety of beginning the actual painting process and then the feeling of “getting the hang of it” as her creativity began to flow. As you admire it front to back, the finished heart is a beautiful work of art with meaningful and detailed local symbolism. On April 15, all 40 of this year’s hearts were on exhibit at Hale Arena. Kathryn’s KC Heart was chosen to be sponsored by Lee’s Summit Honda. After a two-week public display in the City Market, the heart can be seen after May 1 at the Honda dealership on Colbern Road—nice and close for Lakewood fans to visit and enjoy in person.
Kathryn has contributed to the local art community through her work and exhibits at the Nelson-Atkins Art Museum, the Kansas City Museum, and the Mattie Rhodes Center. She is available for commission work and you can see more of her art on the website, kathrynmessick.com. The Messick family frequently spends family time on their farm in Southwest Missouri, hunting, fishing, and raising cattle. Every summer, they can be seen around one of the Lakewood pools soaking up the sun.
Kathryn describes her art as graphic design, and her painting as illustrative and heavily influenced by design principles. She favors mandalas in much of her work using radial symmetry to create balance. This originality and imagination are evidenced by the detailed design of her
