The Ripples // June 2021
June
From the General Manager, Mark Reid We are approaching the mid-year mark in our fiscal year. Once again, all departments are performing well and we see a good outlook for the second half of the year. Our Finance Committee and respective departments are watching inflation as it is beginning to be noticeable in our operations (in terms of purchasing and part-time labor). The April CPI, Consumer Price Index, is the latest data that is published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It is a little concerning that the rise in inflation from April 2020 (256.39) to April 2021 (267.05) is 4.2%. The prior year inflation in April 2018 (255.59) compared to April 2019 (256.39) was a low .3%. Therefore, we have almost a 4% jump in one year. While we are using the July CPI to formulate our annual assessment, we are keeping in mind that July tends to run a higher rate of inflation than April. Therefore, we could see between a 5% to 6% rise by July at the current pace. We have all enjoyed the benefits of low interest and low inflation over the last several years. The Association is watching this closely and will adjust spending, should inflation continue to rise unabated this year. This fall may be a bumpy ride as the Board of Directors has a fiduciary duty per the By Laws to keep the Association on pace with inflation and not fall behind. With that being said, we are very pleased that all operations of the Association and the Lakewood Oaks Country Club have returned to pre-pandemic normal. Fundamentally, we are a part of the national “Honor System” where we all do our part to wear a mask if unvaccinated and measure our risk level when choosing to not wear a mask if vaccinated. We will not be asking anyone what their COVID-19 vaccine status is, as it is a HIPPA protected status of ones’ medical health. Therefore, we move forward with the simple and reasonable principle that each individual is empowered to determine their own level of personal protection. This is the same policy for members and employees. We look forward to a wonderful post pandemic Lakewood summer. Enjoy!

From the Boardroom Dave Petet, At-Large Board Member Our most recent Board Meeting was the last for Dwayne Saucier as his 3-year term came to an end. Please join me in thanking Dwayne for 3 years of volunteer service on the LHC and LPOA Boards. Dwayne was a great resource in all matters, but particularly brought incite in the areas of insurance and as a member of the Lakewood Oaks Golf Course. Dwayne, you will be missed at our meetings! I also want to take a moment to thank two groups within our community; those that volunteer within Lakewood and those that took the time and effort to vote in the recent LHC & LPOA Board of Directors Election. These two groups have many things in common and plenty of overlap, but specifically they took the time to get involved in Lakewood. On a personal note, I waited way too long to get involved in my own neighborhood. Our household has always voted, and as a family we even discuss the merits of some candidates versus others during each election for Board members. But for many years, that was about as far as our involvement went. Those of us that get a chance to serve on the LHC and LPOA Boards thank those of you that took the time to vote. Sadly, and this is normally the case, we only get about a 30% turnout of Lakewood homes voting in these elections. 30%... that’s not really very good and it’s potentially not representative of Lakewood. Is this a big deal? Well, it depends. Our Board of Directors elections are one of the ways you can directly influence what is happening in your neighborhood. You can also have an impact by volunteering for one or more of the many committees and groups within Lakewood. All of these group have a large influence on our neighborhood. If you are involved and volunteering in our neighborhood, thank you. If you diligently vote in our elections and take part in the occasional polls, thank you. If you are not, then you a missing out on a great opportunity to help shape the community.
