“BEING HONEST, AUTHENTIC, APPROACHABLE. THAT IS WHAT I WANT IN AND THROUGH MY ART.”

DIETMAR BRIXY Dietmar Brixy was born in Mannheim in 1961 and studied in Karlsruhe with Harald Klingelhöller and Katharina Fritsch, among others. The fact that he trained as a sculptor is immediately evident. He moves volumes across the canvas. For him, painting is an act of strength. This conqueror of the canvas works with brushes, spatulas, and his own two hands. He smears and digs in the pathways of lines, leaving behind gurgling lava and perfume. This is not entertainment, but rather existentialism. Brixy stirs up the paint, creates reliefs, and exemplifies how the traditional elements of painting in the classical sense can be modernized in different forms. He transports the viewer to a magic mountain, even with his smaller canvases. For each image, this thoroughbred painter has developed a recipe in which he has concealed a number of aromatic details to lend the whole work an air of creativity and timeliness. Brixy is constantly offering us new approaches to allow us to enter into lively communication with his images. Christoph Tannert, Director, Kunstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin

RENÉ ROMERO SCHULER

Karya - Oil on Canvas – 30 x 30"

Glass - Oil on Canvas – 48 x 48"

René Romero Schuler is one most important and highly collected contemporary artists to emerge out of the Midwest. Now splitting her time between Chicago, IL and Carmel, CA, René creates powerful images of strength and vulnerability that speak to the heart of the Human condition; She depicts difficult subjects– love, sorrow, solitude and heartbreak–and yet, she inspires her viewers with hope, fortitude and ultimately, enduring strength. The figures René captures are equal parts self-portraiture and portraits of the range of universal human emotion that she has experienced. Her approach is personal yet transcendent, and essentially intimate. The work is visually and emotionally affecting, powerfully revealing her appreciation for the struggles and triumphs of the human conditions and speaking to the global and societal issues she feels strongly about.

THERESA GIRARD Through The Looking Glass Acrylic on Canvas 60 x 108

Theresa would be the first to tell you that she doesn’t fit into a traditional role. A native of Providence, RI and involved in the arts from an early age, she crafted her own education through studying early 20th Century contemporary artists and abstract expressionism. She also credits her many mentors for their time and encouragement. A color expert and educator for a large manufacturing company, she advanced to the top of her career in marketing, education, and training. She has staged and styled numerous photo shoots, large trade productions, and program development from NY to LA. Theresa is the founder and former Art Director of Access to Art, a community based fine art program. Ms. Girard is a nationally sought after facilitator of a variety of workshops for creative people. Her painterly abstractions have been featured in several national publications including The Artist Magazine, Palette Magazine, Art Collector, Florida Design, Gulfshore Life, Elle Decor, and Architectural Digest.

JOHN LA HUIS John La Huis’ work emerges from a concept of addition and subtraction of color, hue, and material, which form both tool and byproduct. An original idea initiates the process but can either be discarded completely or simply become a fragment of the finished piece. In this way his work is wholly abstract. The visual reference accompanying the original idea often becomes transformed through the process of making. An unexpected form emerges and creates its own balance. The final concept prevails as both reduction and supplementation of the first. Every idea is thrust forward, but applied with caution. Color is used with reservation. By way of instinct La Huis’ work is sculptural. As the work progresses it morphs through an evolution of its own, and having mass, a fight ensues between two and three dimensions. The discovery of new mediums and materials such as epoxy resins, fiberglass, tar, and other unusual elements have inspired him to create a language through exploration. John La Huis’ approach is at once serious and playful, while as intricate and naïve as his art. He has dedicated the last fifteen years to exploring various mediums such as drawing, printmaking, sculpture, and painting. Painting is his predominate practice. It is all important and hard work for him. 20

“MY PERSONAL EXPRESSION EVOLVES FROM THE DESIRE TO EXPLORE AND THE DESIRE TO OPEN A DOOR WITHOUT KNOWING WHERE THAT DOOR LEADS. MY TECHNIQUES CROSS CENTURIES, LANDSCAPES, AND CULTURES.”

PRISCILLA ROBINSON

Robinson makes paper for her creations from plant fibers processed in a Hollander beater. For some pieces she beats the fibers for an extended time to make a crisp semi-translucent paper; for others she beats the fibers minimally so they retain a billowy absorbency. The artist couches the paper onto objects chosen for their shapes and textures or applies textures to the top surface of the paper. A vacuum table compresses the paper and sucks away excess water. When the embossed paper is dry, she applies layers of thinned acrylic paint to the surface until the entire sheet is saturated with pigment. She shapes the paper into space-filling structures, sometimes by applying fiberglass to their backs, sometimes by gluing them to panels or grids.

D AV I D K E S S L E R Conservational Cadence - Acrylic on Aluminum Panel – 44 x 64”

As a painter, it is important for me to address the concerns of painting – what has been done – and what can I add to this. My work on aluminum is an attempt to use the qualities of refracted light as a medium and to have these qualities interact with the painting. The completed image is produced both by refracted light, created by the use of various wire brushes and paint airbrushed in transparent layers. Within this process about half the image is produced by refracted light, and about half by paint. The dual concerns of working with simulation through refracted light simulating paint and hybridization through the use of aluminum, wire brushes, and paint are an attempt to create an imagine within a post modern context – and I use that term simply to mean after modern rather than against modern. 70

DANIEL PHILL Fealty - Acrylic on Canvas - 48 x 72"

Daniel Phill was born and raised in Tacoma, WA. He received his MFA from Stanford University and his BFA at the San Francisco Art Institute. Phill has transformed and re-imagined his unique style of blurring the boundaries of abstraction and representation. Known mostly for his botanical abstract imagery, his paintings bear his signature bold strokes and improvised gestures. He uses marks that are created on layer upon layer of thick, wet, viscous paint on canvas. First and foremost a colorist, Phill creates with fiery, saturated hues. Working in an Abstract Expressionist style, he pieces together organic shapes in his abstractions and teases images from splatters of paint. His canvases demonstrate an impressive control of his material. In large, loose gestures, he describes essential details – long, slender tendrils become reeds, pressed and flattened globs of paint turn into petals, and delicate veins emerge from colors bleeding together. 71
