Grand Flora, Mixed Media on Panel, 72 x 72 in.

John La Huis

John La Huis’ work emerges from a concept of addition and subtraction of colors, hues and materials, which are both the tools and the byproduct. An original idea initiates the process but can either be discarded completely or simply become a fragment of the finished piece. Thus, his work is wholly abstract. 8

In the tradition of the greatest artistic minds of this century, Maxim has set out to discover his own world. His paintings are expressions of what he finds along that exploration.

Maxim Lipzer

Maxim believes that the meaning of an artwork speaks first to the artist, then conveys itself to the viewer. As we gaze upon Maxim’s paintings, we gain some insight into this enigmatic artist’s experiences, moods and sensations. We then realize how these same elements are reflected in our own lives. 11

Much of Ed Nash’s work has a deep connection with the Japanese aesthetic wabisabi, which can be described as one of beauty that is imperfect, impermanent and incomplete.

Ed Nash

His paintings and mixed media work are a response to modern day society’s view of visual perfection. The work reflects and celebrates the patina produced through the passage of time and exposure to the elements. 16

“My paintings are fueled by the expression of things that come to me through life’s unseen experiences. Every placement of color, or covering of another color, affects and shapes the painting. Intransitive Mixed Media on Canvas 76 x 74 in.

Angela Gebhardt

Angela Gebhardt crafts large-scale abstract contemporary pieces as well as figure paintings with bold and surreal messages woven into the composition. Her richly varied life experiences and reverence for the ocean inform much of her work. Angela’s pieces combine elements of the urban with the natural; they are muted and understated, but almost always playing with the theme of love, often incorporating messages to an unseen but very present lover as a textual element into the piece. Plaster, scratches, the use of enamel and dripping to show the beauty that forms in the industrial, harkening back to her roots in the Midwest. 21

Square The Vendetta, Mixed Media on Panel, 72 x 48 in.

Kris Gebhardt

“Most pieces feature strength and beauty, but it’s not sugarcoated; it’s knocked around a bit just like life. We paint a lot of reality on our canvases. Even in its roughest form, you can still see the integration of strength and beauty.” 22

“Spirit is what connects all of humanity. The innate human nature that drives us to judge one another based on nothing more than face value is a notion that fascinates me, and thoroughly influences the direction of my work. I have many great artistic influences, of course, but my own exploration has become what truly propels me forward. My personal quest for a feeling of connection to what lies around me has not only been a very spiritual mission, but it has led me to a deep understanding of something I learned from Deepak Chopra many years ago: “We are all spiritual beings in rented bodies…this body is a blessing, but it is temporary. Only the spirit endures.” 25

Atlantic Flyway, Oil on Canvas, 62 x 72 in.

Muhs is largely known for his work as a painter, exhibited in galleries, collections and museums nationwide. Continually inspired by the light and water and horizon that surround him, his painting has undergone an evolution from its beginnings of literal depictions of his environment, a journey of synthesis and simplification, roughly paralleling the history of twentieth century art. The inspiration remains consistent, but the works are reduced to the point of abstraction, with a modernist touch.

Jeff Muhs

Jeff Muhs’ work can be found in several public collections, namely Cantor Fitzgerald, Time Warner, Inc., Caesars Palace, Las Vegas, Los Angeles County Museum, Los Angeles, CA, Hunter Museum, Memphis, TN, and Ward Museum, Salisbury, MD. His studio is located in New York. 26

Pushing the boundaries of light, color and design, Bette Ridgeway is best known for her large-scale, luminous poured canvases, which, in recent years have garnered notable international recognition.

Bette Ridgeway

The artist’s recognition is as much identified with the process of controlled paint-pouring and canvas manipulation as with the gem-like veils of transparent and translucent color which have characterized her work since the early 1980s. 30

Nebula, Mixed Media on Panel, 75 x 37 in.

Andrea Dasha Reich

Inspired by the organic shapes and planes in nature, Reich’s artworks are a woven interplay of rich color spectrums that explore the depth and intimacy of the abstract world we live in. Her works are an indication of how this prolific multimedia artist sees the world; astonishing beauty, magnificent power and the intense awe-inspiring complexion in nature of which the life and creation of color is born. 31

Dietmar Brixy layers thick dreamy compositions, swirling otherwise strong lines into pieces that hold a certain ease and strength simultaneously. In modern contemporary designed homes with open floor plans, art really needs to be an aesthetic centerpiece and Brixy adds a stunning touch to a South Florida art collector’s home.

Dietmar Brixy

The German artist molds large grooves of paint layered in compositions that are modern and elegant. He uses his fingers to create swirling precise clouds that flow across the canvas. This is not your child’s finger painting, Brixy’s movements require a precision and an exact technique. 34

Raluca’s themes are inspired by a thought process which tries to explain the mysteries of life, man’s own evolution as well as the connection between the tangible real world and that which lies beyond it.

Raluca Pilat

Her technique is imbued with force, vitality and freshness. Her use of color is precise and her touch, sometimes nervous while at other times graceful, is in perfect accord with her chosen themes. Her work is testament to the fact that she managed to create a unique artistic vision, a vision that is entirely her own and which sets her apart from all other artists. 36

Thor & Jennifer Bueno

“We began working together fifteen years ago after meeting at Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood, Washington. With my background in performance art and her background in conceptual art there was a lot to talk about. We had a different way of looking at the medium because we didn’t always think of glass as utilitarian; it was so much bigger than that. Whether we were working together in the hot shop or independently we found a shared interest in pushing the boundaries of what was expected from glass. After completing a three -year residency at Penland School of Crafts in the mountains of North Carolina we settled nearby and set up our studio where we continue to find inspiration in the natural beauty that surrounds us.” 37

“I wake up every day and say a morning prayer. It’s an intentional, mindful session that gets me in the mindset that a higher power is working in my life. This mentality orients me toward that which is more important than money, things, and ego: an attitude of giving, loving, and letting the Spirit of God guide me. I know that my purpose is to spread love through every aspect of my artistry. Whether it be art, music, poetry, or human relations, this mindfulness is present; this Spirit is present. 40

“I begin with a blank canvas contemplating colors and the direction of the work. I pour water and acrylic paint on the blank surface, move the canvas to change the shape of the poured paint, allow the paint to dry, and then, based on my intuition, apply additional layers until the form is complete.

Clara Berta

The process is slow and painstaking, but results in a final image that reflects the natural flow of my energy and emotions.” 44

C E L E B R AT I O N O F

Human Form & Mother Nature “I begin with simple clay and sculpt the torso using the coil building technique. The simplicity of the torso captures the essence of the soul. That, together with the primitive firing techniques of sawdust and Raku, brings me back to my South African roots. The beauty of the colors in the clay is created by the intensity of the fire. I “dress” the naked form of the torso to represent nature using semiprecious and rare stones, formed over millions of years. Ancient science tells us that each stone has a symbolic meaning and our eyes detect the unique beauty of what lies within each. My sculptures reflect my total life experience. Born and raised in South Africa, studied art in the Netherlands, I now reside in the heartland of the USA. These experiences have exposed me to cultural diversity and the beauty of nature. My work is the expression of the human form… and the embodiment of beauty entwined with the powers of Nature.”

Bruce Rubenstein

“His forms venture along sinuously, just as the stem of a giant vine snakes along a jungle floor, leading to explorations of its structure from one branching leaf bud to another. I even had visions about grabbing this vine and trying to pull it out straight, just to spite its natural convolutions. Makes me think of the Amazon snake-hunters I encountered in Peru who stretched out captured boa constrictors just to measure them and see how long they had grown.” 50

French Flavors, Acrylic on Canvas, 60 x 60 in.

“Most artists work from the outside in, the subject is outside of themselves. I work from the inside out,” says Leonard. Most artists work with brushes; Leonard works with an extended palette knife. I’m pulling paint, layering one layer at a time, which creates a sense of history in the painting. You can see the different colors and layers.”

James Leonard

Great art is such a surprise. It’s so enchanting, so delightfully unexpected and unpredictable. In order to create that, you have to drop the concept of imposing what you think it should be, and allow the work to evolve in its own way. For me, that’s the essence of creativity.” 53

“The figure is my starting point, not my true subject. My subjects are human presence and absence. My approach is intuitive, suggesting rather than detailing. As I work and rework my canvas the image appears sometimes only to elude me then to reassert itself much later.” 57

Brenda Heim

“Early paintings, undisciplined, gestural chaos, often included a small red dot as a point of focus. Today nearly thirty years on, bold forms have become The (my) Still Point (Zen Meditation), in both 3D and 2D work. Akin to traditional calligraphy, my gestural work also includes nuances of imperfections e.g. off center compositions, a bent circle, resulting in explorations of somewhat incompatible yet harmonious, mark making.” 58

Rotating Face, Mixed Media on Canvas, 68 x 55 in.

Harouna Ouédraogo

Harouna’s works are inspired by the society that surrounds him. The street, the human, the everyday life offer an infinite panel of subjects. “Build, deconstruct, rebuild are actions that I often use in my work with an illogical research of the line and the form”. He has his studio at the Hang’art of the Creators near Lyon in France. 59

“My inspiration comes from studying the nature around us. The intricate structure of a leaf, robustness of grass wind blowing through an open window, or moon reflecting in the water, all create the logical harmony of our nature’s “building blocks”. The nature is pure, clean, and precious in its own creation. Such insights are on my mind when creating sculptures. Simple, yet elegant, intended to enrich, decorate and above all distinguish the space as beautiful flowers or morning sunlight would.”

Esteban Leyva

There are so many universes and situations in them as life and its surprises, for an always naive man who goes restless, some are lost in these labyrinths without finding the end in this type of artistic representation.” 79
