Melingo

Horse with full band

Fri 9 Nov, 8pm | Tickets £12 (£9) Cabaret style performance - Room to dance

Sun 18 Nov, 7.30pm | Tickets £18

Knives and romance, hallucinations, spiralling twists of the brain and undiscovered romanticism…Melingo’s insolent, anecdotal songs take the form of daydreams or occasional thrillers, with swinging bursts, shady noises and the grating, almost Dada-like echo of the craziness of a world stumbling on its last legs. A true tango original.

No-one on this earth sounds like Horse. She is quite simply unique. To see Horse live is a moving and joyful experience. She shares her spirit and her love in equal measure – every gig. The band are an integral part of the live sound and as much as part of the brand as the voice. Horse and her band know how to put on a show – each one as important as the last.

Vanley Burke: By the Rivers of Birminam Sat 22 Sep – Sun 18 Nov | Open Tue – Sat, 12 - 8pm | Sun 11am – 4pm (closed on Mondays) | First Floor Gallery |Free Entry Vanley Burke has photographed the Jamaican Community in Handsworth since the late 1960s. His images reveal a great compassion for his own people, expressed in his image of the Africa Liberation Day crowds gathered in Handsworth Park in 1977. Curated by Lynda Morris, the exhibition contextualises the images through a collage of quotes drawn from press on the subject of immigration to Birmingham.

Nowhere can tell that story better than Birmingham. Charting the past 45 years, Vanley Burke’s pictures represent probably the greatest photographic document of Caribbean people in post-war Britain, detailing the experience of Black people in the UK and their community identity. Funded by Arts Council England, The Roughley Trust and NORWICH UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF THE ARTS.
