In this workshop using sound and music as a starting point, students will gain the opportunity to create and improvise text and develop a corresponding movement vocabulary, which they will then be able to build upon within the particular and rewarding dynamic of the ensemble. The workshop links to key components in the national curriculum, including speaking and listening; using dramatic techniques and sound to explore ideas; using text and movement to convey character; improvising and working in role.

Refusing to speak to adults, the twins communicate in their own private language, their only relationship being an intense and turbulent bond with each other.

Schools, Colleges & Universities

Alongside our Learning and Participation programme this term we have a large selection of workshops that connect to our performance and visual arts programme. Suitable for a variety of age groups and levels these workshops provide the opportunity to work with established companies and artists who are leaders in their field.

Earthfall At Swim, Two Boys

Volcano Theatre A Clockwork Orange

ACE dance & music ICE

Set in Ireland in 1916, the production is staged entirely in water, and set against the backdrop of the Easter Rising in Ireland. This tender and visually beautiful production juxtaposes the developing love affair between two young men with political turmoil in Ireland and the slaughter on the Western Front – contrasting the dream of national liberation and the search for personal freedom.

A Clockwork Orange may be fifty years old but its description of a corrupt state and bankrupt civil society have never seemed more familiar. In a world like this, how is the nation’s youth to behave? To survive, you have to be feral: violent, drunk, drugged and debauched.

Learning opportunities Mon 21 – Fri 25 Nov

The At Swim, Two Boys workshop provides participants with an insight into the methodologies, themes and choreographic devices used to create At Swim, Two Boys, encouraging learners to get involved through practical exploration and application. Performance Tue 18 Oct, 8pm Tickets £13 (£10) Age: 14+

A mac birmingham production for the annual The Big Draw

The Big Draw: Continued Line Inspired by the popular medium of etch-a-sketch, and building upon the success of last year’s From Our Drawing Stations project which generated over 3000 drawings for exhibition, the Continued Line project aims to get everybody drawing. Expanding upon recent work in this area, particularly the work with Plan B during Fierce Festival and their GPS generated drawings, Continued Line explores picture-making confined by the rules of ‘etch-a-sketch’. Without removing medium from support, be it pencil from paper or thread from fabric or cursor from canvas, these limitations can provoke creative interpretations to subject matter and new ways of working.

Re:sketch mac birmingham would like to invite schools, colleges, universities and community groups to create a piece of art with the classic etch-a-sketch. You might paint on it, take it to bits and create something new or simply just draw a classic etch-a-sketch picture, but we would like groups to respond to the title of Continued Line.

We have 10 etch-a-sketches available for groups to take out and use. However, if you have your own you can take part too. All the etch-a-sketch artworks will be displayed in a public exhibition between 1 – 16 October.

For more information or to book activities on this page, please contact our Next Generation Producer Daniel Whitehouse at daniel.whitehouse@macarts.co.uk or call 0121 446 3225.
