2 Summer Extra – Contents

Why would you want to go on holiday? Ash clouds, motorway queues, sand in crevices and odd patches of sunburn...we can offer so much more, and all on your doorstop. Not content with getting 120,000 of you through our doors in our opening month, we now want to get you all back for even more fun. In here you’ll find some gems to keep you and your family occupied this Summer. We’re delighted to get the party started in our much–missed outdoor arena, so pack a bag with everything you need for a British Summer party – sun lotion, snuggly blanket and maybe a brolly. Nothing will dampen our spirits!

You can also go on a bit of a “personal journey” without a hint of travel sickness, by discovering your inner–artist. We’ve courses and workshops where you can dip a toe into a one–off workshop, spend a few weeks learning a new skill, or just keep all the family busy making a mess here, that we’ll clean up. Yay! What an offer! All we ask is that you come and discover what mac has to offer. We’ve got the facilities... but YOU make it art. So get creative!

The Sampad Story

Now – Mon 30 Aug

20th Birthday Exhibition Retrospective

Admission Free

Now – Mon 30 Aug

Sat 10 Jul, 7.30pm, arena, Tickets: £12 (£9)

Plug in, guest–curated by artist Simon Poulter, explores the changing role of our home city. The exhibition reflects the pride and nostalgia of where Birmingham once was and the exciting territory of where it is going next. Featuring work by Peter Cusack, Stuart Whipps, Birmingham Popular Music Archive, Vanley Burke and others, the exhibition brings together new artist commissions, documentary and photography plus selected artefacts from Birmingham’s rich industrial heritage.

The Sampad Story is a retrospective exhibition that takes you on a journey of South Asian arts in the region since 1990. Told through the eyes of the artists, audiences and communities that sampad has worked with over the past twenty years, the exhibition illustrates how, from its home at mac, sampad has grown from an annual festival to a continuous year round programme.

The Congo Allstars bring soukous right up to date with funky rumba beats and cutting–edge dub reggae creating an irresistible mix at mac’s first arena gig since re–opening.

The events below provide visitors with the opportunity to further the cultural debate as part of plug in.

(DR03SH/DR04SH) Creative Drama is a unique introduction into the world of theatre–making for budding young performers. Over three weeks, we will introduce a wide variety of styles including improvisation, clowning, puppetry and everything in between! Whilst unlocking creative imaginations, each budding performer will learn to work as a group, find new ways to express themselves physically and vocally, creating a performance to share utilising their newly acquired skills. No experience necessary but plenty of enthusiasm essential.

Learning: learning@macarts.co.uk 0121 446 3223

There is an additional, one off, studio induction fee of £15.00. Days and times of studio access can be downloaded from the mac website from 25th July.

Autumn at mac September sees the annual Artsfest celebrations (10-12th Sept) taking place throughout Birmingham. mac is delighted to be part of the programme and we will be offering a range of free activities both within the building and at our Artsfest stand in Birmingham City centre. What’s more we have a full programme of performances to take us through to winter, highlights include music from The Destroyers and our Christmas production The Lost Happy Endings and our full term of courses begin in September featuring some past course favourites and more.

Visitor Information Children’s courses and workshops Guardians should take their children to the studio where the activity is being held and collect them promptly at the end of the session. No previous experience is required by children to take part in any of our workshops or courses. Where indicated, guardians should remain with their children throughout the session.

Ages Courses and workshops have been developed and planned with specific age ranges in mind and we ask you to keep to those suggested.

Materials The cost of materials for visual arts courses for children is included in the fee. We do however, sell a young person’s art pack which is available from the studio. For adult courses, we only supply basic materials and with Artist Tutor guidance, learners should then provide their own. Some basic materials including paper are available for sale.

Pottery workshops There is a charge for finished pieces that includes clay, firing and glazing. Please allow up to three weeks for firing before collection and where possible please contact the Visual Arts technician to arrange a convenient appointment (tel: 121 446 3229). Artist Tutors will issue young people with a receipt for their work, which should be brought to mac when collecting work.

Lunch For all day workshops, children will be accompanied by Learner Support Workers at lunchtimes but lunch is not provided by mac.

Clothing We strongly recommend that young people wear either old clothes or an apron for any visual arts course.

You can also book online 24 hours a day at www.macarts.co.uk Course tickets may be collected from mac’s Sales and Information desk, picked up from the ticket collection kiosks or sent by post (for a £1 charge).

Attendance If you miss a week or a number of weeks for any reason we won’t be able to issue a refund.

Refunds, Exchanges and Transfers Fees may be refunded if cancellation is made 15 days prior to the course start date. Cancellations made after this time will not be refunded, unless we have to cancel a class due to circumstances beyond our control. Depending on availability, if after one session you decide that the learning programme you have enrolled on is unsuitable and notify us within 48 hours by contacting the Sales and Information team; we will endeavour to transfer you to another programme of your choice but cannot guarantee this in all cases.

Visitor Info While every effort is made to offer the learning programme as set out on mac’s website and literature, mac reserves the right to withdraw particular programmes and to change both the content and the pricing when the need arises without prior warning. Students who have already paid in full for a learning programme will not be subject to any price increase. Full terms and conditions are downloadable from our website www.macarts.co.uk or you may pick up a copy from Sales and Information. F or directions and advice on getting to mac please see back page.
