President, Board of Trustees Message It has been my great pleasure to serve as President of the MacKenzie Art Gallery Board of Trustees in 2012/13; and a privilege to serve with the dedicated and talented board and staff in carrying out the MacKenzie’s mission to engage people through outstanding, transformative experiences in the visual arts. The Board was very busy in 2012/13. In addition to our ongoing work, we adopted a new governance model and processes, which have helped clarify the role of the Board in articulating the vision and strategy, including the artistic vision, for the MacKenzie. The Board, on behalf of the community, sets the vision and works with the CEO to ensure the strategies and actions deliberately and intentionally move us toward that vision. This does not mean the Board will be selecting exhibitions; but rather, ensuring that the programming is meeting the needs, interests and expectations of our current and future visitors. The new governance model also helps clarify the Board’s relationship with, and accountabilities and expectations of, the Executive Director. Current Executive Director, Jeremy Morgan has been instrumental in helping us develop a new way of thinking in this regard. Having worked closely with Jeremy, it is bitter sweet for the Board to have begun the process of searching for a new Executive Director. Jeremy agreed to stay with the MacKenzie for two years to help us stabilize operations, conduct a diagnosis and review of the current state, and work with the Board to set and implement a strategy that will carry the Mackenzie into the future. We truly have been blessed by Jeremy’s wisdom, talents and energy and will be sorry to see his term end in May 2014, but are excited for the future. 2013 is the 60th anniversary of the MacKenzie Art Gallery, the 50th anniversary of the MacKenzie Art Gallery Volunteers, the 40th anniversary of Bazaart. We have a proud past, and a very exciting future full of fabulous exhibitions and programming, enthusiastic volunteers, and inspiring community events. Finally, to each and every volunteer – Board member, Gallery Shop attendant, school program facilitator, event planner and support; to the hard working and dedicated staff; to the visitors, donors, sponsors and community partners – thank you! I am so very happy that the MacKenzie is part of the community that I live in and you are all key to that.

Andrea Wagner President, Board of Trustees

Executive Director’s Message As we celebrated 60 years of art at the MacKenzie Art Gallery this year, we found time to reflect on our history and those whose legacy we have inherited. The year was also one of transformation as we began to implement our recently developed strategic plan. We are pleased to report that last year the MacKenzie touched the lives of nearly 127,000 people with 19 exhibitions, more than 25 public programs and countless school and community tours. The innovation and diversity of our extensive programming affirms the MacKenzie’s place as one of Canada’s leading public art galleries. Looking back at 2012/13, it is evident that what we do here at the MacKenzie is only possible with the loyal support and generosity of our donors, members, volunteers, and sponsors. And, what is it we have been doing here this year? By presenting such exhibits from the National Gallery of Canada as Carl Beam, in partnering with the University of Regina and the First Nations University of Canada to mount The Synthetic Age—an exhibition of their fine arts faculty members— and, by preserving and contextualizing the Permanent Collection through exhibits such as Big Bang Theory, the MacKenzie continued to engage our diverse community with the visual arts. Internally, we have focused on exploring new ways of working together—across traditional departments, in the collaboration and development of original initiatives that will better serve our community. I’m happy to report that our operations have once again finished the year in the black. We have continued to build upon visitor research, develop new areas of revenue and expand our capacity to deliver the best experience possible to all who visit the Gallery. We are extremely grateful for the generous support of so many close friends – donors, members, volunteers, and corporate partners. You allow us to serve the public in so many different ways. My sincere thanks and gratitude to the Board of Trustees and our staff for their collective efforts in realizing the MacKenzie’s mission of delivering outstanding, transformative experiences in the visual arts. With the strong support of our community, together we begin the next sixty years serving the people of Saskatchewan. See you at the MacKenzie!

Jeremy Morgan Executive Director

Report of the Independent Auditor on the Summary Financial Statements To the Members of MacKenzie Art Gallery Incorporated: The accompanying summary financial statements, which comprise the summary balance sheet as at March 31, 2013 and the summary statement of revenue and expenses for the year then ended, and a summary of significant accounting policies and other explanatory information, are derived from the audited financial statements of MacKenzie Art Gallery Incorporated for the year ended March 31, 2013. We expressed an unmodified audit opinion on those financial statements in our report dated June 12, 2013. Those financial statements, and the summary financial statements, do not reflect the effects of events that occurred subsequent to the date of our report on those financial statements. The summary financial statements do not contain all the disclosures required by Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations. Reading the summary financial statements, therefore, is not a substitute for reading the audited financial statements of MacKenzie Art Gallery Incorporated. Management’s Responsibility for the Summary Financial Statements Management is responsible for the preparation of a summary of the audited financial statements on the basis described in Note 1. Auditor’s Responsibility Our responsibility is to express an opinion on the summary financial statements based on our procedures, which were conducted in accordance with Canadian Auditing Standard 810, Engagements to Report on Summary Financial Statements. Opinion In our opinion, the summary financial statements derived from the audited financial statements of MacKenzie Art Gallery Incorporated for the year ended March 31, 2013 are a fair summary of those financial statements on the basis described in Note 1. However, the restated comparative information is unaudited to the equivalent extent as the audited financial statements of MacKenzie Art Gallery Incorporated for the year ended March 31, 2013. The comparative information of the audited financial statements is described in our audit opinion in our report dated June 12, 2013. Our Comparative Information paragraph of our audit opinion draws attention to Note 2 of those financial statements which describes that MacKenzie Art Gallery Incorporated adopted Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations on April 1, 2012 with a transition date of April 1, 2011. These standards were applied retrospectively by management to the comparative information in those financial statements, including the balance sheet as at March 31, 2012 and April 1, 2011, and the statements of revenue and expenses, changes in equity, and cash flows for the year ended March 31, 2012 and related disclosures. We were not engaged to report on the restated comparative information, and as such, it is unaudited. Our audit opinion states that, those financial statements present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of MacKenzie Art Gallery Incorporated as at March 31, 2013, and the results of its operations, changes in net assets and its cash flows for the year then ended in accordance with Canadian accounting standards for not-forprofit organizations.

1. Basis of preparation The summary financial statements are derived from the audited financial statements for the year ended March 31, 2013 prepared in accordance with Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations. The preparation of the summary financial statements requires management to determine the information that needs to be reflected in the summary financial statements so that they are consistent, in all material respects, with or represent a fair summary of the audited financial statements. The summary financial statements have been prepared by management using the following criteria: i) whether information in the summary financial statements is in agreement with the related information in the audited financial statements; and ii) whether, in all material respects, the summary financial statements contain the information necessary to avoid distorting or obscuring matters disclosed in the related audited financial statements, including the notes thereto. The audited financial statements of MacKenzie Art Gallery Incorporated are available at www.mackenzieartgallery.ca. 2. Comparative information The comparative figures from 2012 were audited by another public accounting firm prior to the adoption of Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations. As these new standards were applied retrospectively by management, the impact of the adoption has not been reported on and therefore the comparative information has been marked “unaudited in the summary financial statements.
