A Tiffany Studios New York “Peony” table lamp. The shade features three different peony cultivars from Tiffany’s garden at Laurelton Hall: the Greek Peony (Paeonia parnassica), Cup of Shining Night, and Shima Nishiki. This “Peony” lamp is an unusual variant featuring gold-Ruby drapery glass. This rare and costly glass variety was colored using gold chloride and produced in limited quantities between 1888 and 1890. Distinguishing this lamp is the nuance in coloration and texture. The palette of the lamp includes three different types of blue, five different types of green and three different types of red in a plethora of combinations and textures. The lampshade sits atop a rare Tiffany Studios New York green and red patinated bronze lamp base with pierced Onion Bulb design.

212 644 6400 | macklowegallery.com TIFFANY STUDIOS NEW YORK, “Dragonfly” Table Lamp Shade on “Mosaic Dragonfly” Base, Circa 1900 - $275,000 Item 19446 7

The Dragonfly Lamp has been among the most celebrated and most sought after of Louis Comfort Tiffany (and Clara Driscoll’s!) designs since its inception. This lamp is particularly special in that it matches an exceptional base with an exceptional shade; the shade of the lamp features the rare “absinthe” green that Tiffany’s head chemist Arthur J. Nash worked so furiously to perfect. The base, besides the intricacy of the mosaic, is notable in that it reflects Tiffany’s love and appreciation of Japanese culture. The swirl of the dragonflies is meant to represent a form of hypnotism practiced by Japanese children and training Samurai called Uzumaki, in which swirling motions are made with the hands in order to confuse the dragonfly until it can be caught.

The “Chardons des Sables” (sand thistle) commode is a moving meditation on mortality. Gallé created this piece in 1903, after he was diagnosed with leukemia. He died the following year. Gallé has rendered a vista redolent of a longing for return. The commode’s central “sand thistle” motif alludes to a passage in Victor Hugo’s poem Les contemplations, Paroles sur la dune (1854):

Gallé’s two-tone peony likely drew inspiration from the eponymous “Mme. Emile Gallé” peony flower. Gallé was the president of the Central Nancy Horticultural Society and had co-founded the group with peony cultivator Felix Crousse (1845-1925). In honor of their friendship, Crousse named two peony varieties after Gallé and his wife. The pivoine “Mme Emile Gallé” was a flamboyant rose colored double peony that lightens to a cream yellow towards its center. While the peony was developed in 1881, the “Pivoines” lampshades were produced after Emile and Henriette Gallé’s death. The “Pivoines” lamp served as both a work of art and a touching tribute to the late couple.

Finished with two of the rarest and most prized experimental glass forms, the “rippled” and “confetti” glass, this shade, which is also of noteworthy size and scale, is exceptional on visual merit alone. Adding to the visual complexity and grace is the fact that each of the varieties of nasturtium blossoms featured on the shade holds historical significance; the specific colors of the blooms being known in the late 19th century as markers, celebrations, or remembrances of a historic event. The pink blossoms are “Pompadour Pink,” reflecting the fascination during this era in literature and on stage with Madame Pompadour and the famous red rouge made of vermillion that she wore. The crimson blossoms are “Empress of India” nasturtiums, celebrating then reigning Queen Victoria’s coronation as the Empress of India. The yellow blossoms are a commemorative flower marking the premature death of Prince Henry also during this era, and, finally, the rosy colored blooms are “Aurora” nasturtiums that celebrate the discovery of the northern lights and the first successful expeditions to the North Pole.

Karl Hagenauer was an influential designer in the Art Deco style. He enrolled at the Vienna School of Applied Arts at age eleven. He studied with Josef Hoffmann and Oskar Strnad and created designs for the Wiener Werkstätte art collective. After wartime service in the infantry, he resumed his training and qualified as an architect. He joined the family business in 1919 and soon took on leadership in both design and management. Karl Hagenauer was responsive to the change in public taste influenced by the popularity of the Vienna Secession. While Karl was the principal designer of everyday objects (and some sculptures), his younger brother Franz specialized in sculpture. Franz Hagenauer also studied from an early age with Franz Cižek at Vienna’s School of Applied Arts, and joined the family business at age twenty. His interest and talent lay in sculpture with sheet metals rather than cast figures. Later in his career he was head of metalwork and metal design classes at the Academy of Applied Arts. Franz took over the running of the company after Karl died in 1956. FRANZ HAGENAUER, “Jazz Band Sculptures” Mid Twentieth Century - $125,000 Item 19054 Dimensions: Saxaphonist 72”h; Drummer 68” h.
