SARAH BERNHARDT, Self Portrait Bust as Chimera 113/4"h x 121/2"w, Circa 1880 – $125,000 Celebrated actress Sarah Bernhardt was also a sculptor and in this self portrait she combines the body of a griffon, wings of a bat and tail of a fish into a mysterious image of the artist as a sphinx - a metaphor for her ability to transform herself, both on stage and off. Her profession as actress depicted by Tragic and Comic masks as epaulettes on her shoulders, a horned skull supporting an inkwell in the center refers to the mortally difficult act of writing. Identical sculpture in the Permanent Collections of MFA Boston and Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. 47
