Fall 2019

A Letter from the Head of School James Milford From the Head of School For those who know me well, you know I love a challenge. I also have a bias toward action and a drive to make a lasting impact. What is so meaningful to me is I work at a school and lead a community that has the same drive. The past two years of the iTHINK Initiative have seen an explosion of programs and opportunities for our students. These opportunities stretch from our Upper School students in the Beck Family Research Center where they are taking college courses in Robotics and Engineering, through the Middle School where prosthetics are being produced, tested, and refined to improve the lives of others in our community, to the spirit driving the new Mini-Marauder Theatre Company for our lower elementary students. This energy is infectious, hard to miss, and impossible to avoid when you are on campus and interact with any of the faculty, staff, or students. As we approach the Spring season, we are very close to reaching our goal of funding the Beck Family Innovation Center. This 21,000 square foot facility will shift the center of our Upper School campus and bring new life into our Science program. It adds a ‘lab’ for our Business and Entrepreneurship Concentration in the new school store and brings College Guidance alongside the new Langford Hall where students will be able to hang out, connect, study, and enjoy a comfortable and collaborative space together. The opening of this new building during the 2020 school year will pave the way for the expansion of the Center for Learning into the existing Science building and even more opportunities for our students, faculty, and community. All of this work, all of this energy, originates from our strong student-centered focus, led by an ambitious strategic plan by our forward-thinking Board of Trustees. To my more than three thousand alumni, my thousand students, hundreds of families and faculty, we will continue pursuing programs and attitudes that bring opportunities for success to our students and graduates. Our focus has been and will continue to be on building opportunities for students to learn, develop, grow, and thrive in an ever-changing world. As you read through the Virtu, know that every page proudly displays the work of an amazing and dedicated faculty and a staff. I extend an open invitation to you to come back to campus and walk around with me, I can guarantee the stories I can share of our students and faculty will inspire you. If you can’t make to campus, please subscribe to the Few Minutes for Families podcast where I spend time bragging on our amazing programs and people. Go Marauders!

LEGACY of IMPACT Beth and Lawton Langford Question: Your family has a long and storied history with our community but with Maclay School in particular. Tell us a bit about your longstanding philanthropic support of the school, especially through the different phases of involvement with Maclay you have experienced, such as being a student (Lawton), alumnus, parent, former parent, Board of Trustees member, etc.

Beth and Lawton Langford have been a long-standing pillar of philanthropic support for Maclay School. A 1975 graduate of Maclay, Lawton was the first Distinguished Alumnus inducted into the Maclay Alumni Hall of Fame. He served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees from 2002-2004 and led the Building of Excellence Capital Campaign in 2004. Beth spent years leading booster organizations while Giles and Callie Corbin played on their respective sports teams, helped create the Girls Leadership and Success Program, and most recently served as a member of the Board of Trustees. Their generosity of time, talent, and treasure over the last several decades created a legacy of philanthropy. It has positioned Maclay to be the best independent school in the area, and for that we are so grateful.

4

Answer: We were raised to give back to the community, in our respective hometowns of Brooksville and Tallahassee, and community is what makes living and raising a family for nearly four decades here in Tallahassee so special. Whether it’s friends at church, Maclay, St. Teresa Beach, Seminole Boosters, Kappa Delta, Junior League, or the different cultural, civic or educational boards on which we’ve been honored to serve, it is all about supporting and being supported. Maclay, from its first day, has been a big part of our family’s community so it’s only natural that we would support the school in a big way. It is very meaningful to us that so many Langfords have graduated from Maclay (with the dream for our grandchildren to also), but our involvement at Maclay as an alumnus and former parents, is just as meaningful. Giving our time, talent, and treasure over the years has been a blessing. The opportunity to serve on the Board of Trustees, participate in leadership programming, and support campaigns for facilities, curriculum, and athletics is one of our favorite civic involvements. Then there is the Auction - a great way to support the school and spend time with Maclay friends and family.

Question: How would you describe your children’s educational experience and opportunities they too advantage of at Maclay? Answer: Maclay brought out the best in our children. Giles’ love of history was enriched at Maclay and helped make him the voracious reader that he is. He also learned to be a team player and leader under Coaches Mike McGrotha and Tim Ashcroft and perseverance as a member of the crew team. Callie Corbin excelled academically, benefitting from the curriculum and classroom. She was selected to play on the varsity soccer team despite being in Middle School. Coach Paul Dixon’s mentoring and confidence in her played a significant part in her leadership skills and self-confidence today. Needless to say, Giles and Callie Corbin enjoyed themselves socially at Maclay and made lifelong friends. Question: What do you think are the most important things that Maclay contributes to our Tallahassee community? Answer: Maclay offers the best college-preparatory education within 100 miles. Having the school in this community affords additional benefits. When FSU and FAMU are recruiting world-renowned professors, and top-notch coaches or our hospitals are working to attract the best doctors, or the Chamber of Commerce is recruiting a new business to consider Tallahassee, those professionals or executives always want to know the quality of education available for their children. Maclay School’s presence and prestige is an important component for the growth of our community. Question: Tell us a bit about your philosophy on independent and college preparatory education. Answer: We are firm believers in post-secondary education, and that there is a university or college for everyone. If you want your children to have the benefit of a college experience and education, graduation from Maclay - with its challenging curriculum, student

diversity, rich arts programming, championship athletics, and tremendous scholarship resource - is the surest way for them to find the right place to go and be prepared to succeed. We can all be proud of the many Maclay graduates attending different service academies, Ivy League schools, state and private universities, and liberal arts schools. Our philosophy about a college prep education is fairly simple. It gives an aspiring college student a slight advantage over others who didn’t attend a college prep school. Of course, going to college is not the only way to be successful in life, but having a BA or BS certainly gives a person an advantage when competing for a job. And for those who go on to a professional job, it’s even more important. Question: Can you share a bit about your personal philosophy and approach to philanthropy? Answer: We share common interests in giving locally, statewide, nationally, and globally in the areas of faith, education, social, and cultural. And while we are united in those causes and efforts that are important in our lives as a family, we do have individual, personal approaches to our giving. Speaking in third person, Beth seeks to give directly for immediate impact to assist individuals or causes. And Lawton enjoys giving from a broader perspective to ensure growth and sustainability to causes and efforts. Question: What do you see as the most important things that will move Maclay forward in its second half-century? Answer: For Maclay to continue and improve its standing as a firstclass educational experience for individual learning and educational success, we need to stay on the cutting edge of technology in the classroom and curriculum while also emphasizing the importance of friendship, connection and relevancy. 5

BECK FAMILY INNOVATION CENTER

T

he design for the Beck Family Innovation Center was born from the need to respond to the growing ambition of both Maclay’s students and faculty as programs and curriculum have outgrown current facilities. This Center will provide students and faculty the spaces they need to be flexible, apply concepts and skills necessary to prepare for tomorrow’s world and further pursue their interests. This 21,000 square foot facility will create spaces that match the exemplary STEM curriculum offered in the Maclay Upper School, the School’s active, dynamic and growing College Counseling program, and a collegiate-style student commons area for meetings, studying, and collaboration. One key component of the Innovation Center will be the flexibility of the design, creating opportunities for cooperation between the programs housed in the Innovation Center and the students’ work on campus. The Student Commons will provide a venue for students to work together on projects and will act as a hub to showcase student work. In addition, the Innovation Center will host iTHINK lectures and guest speakers and will be the new face of the Upper School which will shift the center of campus so that students can easily access support and services. The Beck Family Innovation Center is scheduled to open August 2020 and will have six state-of-the-art science labs, a new school store which will serve as the lab for the Business and Entrepreneurship concentration, College Counseling Offices and Upper School Administration Offices. 6

FACULTY Faculty at FCIS Several faculty members presented to colleagues at the Florida Independent School Council conference, which was held in Orlando this past November. Presenters included Heather Bas, who talked about the Junior Interview Series in Creating a Mock Interview Program for High School Students and our Visual Arts team Kim Daniel, Cathy Hicks, Kyle Maurey, and Kaitlyn Dressel, who presented on Embedding Empathy in Students Using Community Outreach Through the Arts.

ISM Workshop On October 24th and 25th, the Middle and Upper School Faculty were involved in a training titled “Engaging Students in an Extended Period.” Independent School Management (ism®) Consultant, Barbara Beachley, was the guest facilitator. Ms. Beachley brought her extensive educational knowledge to ISM in 2011, where she now serves as Director of Advisory Services. The training was designed to expose faculty and administrators to the key concepts of teaching in an extended period and to leave a plan for continued growth in place. Specific objectives were “for teachers to learn and implement a new variety of strategies for planning an engaging, student-centered class, and to develop in-house teacher mentors who will continue to train and support teachers in the future.” In Maclay’s case, the in-house teacher mentors were the Middle and Upper School Department Heads along with Charles Beamer and Barbara Rubio-Gomez, who received training directly from Ms. Beachley on Thursday. These teacher leaders also engaged in conversation with a student panel comprised of representatives from both the Middle and Upper School in order to get student feedback on current teaching practices in the block schedule. These teacher leaders, with the assistance of Ms. Beachley, conducted the full-faculty training on Friday.

THE

MACLAY FUND 2018-2019

The Maclay Fund is a tax-deductible opportunity for parents, alumni, grandparents, faculty, staff, trustees, and friends of Maclay to support the resources and programs that are essential to our students’ success. The dollars raised by the Maclay Fund provide the resources for programs as well as capital projects that allow us to improve facilities on our beautiful campus beyond what tuition alone can cover.
