Reading
An online article 1 Before you read > Take a quick look at the article. What is it about – good holiday destinations or good places to live?
WHERE IS THE HAPPIEST PLACE IN THE WORLD? Is it possible to measure happiness? ‘Yes’, say the experts! According to the United Nations 2019 World Happiness Report, the happiest countries in the world are Finland, Denmark and Norway. Then come Iceland, Netherlands, Switzerland, Sweden, New Zealand, Canada and Austria. There are a lot of happiness surveys with different results, but according to many of them, people are usually happier in small, quiet towns.
What makes people happy in the place where they live? Is it a good community spirit? Is it sunny weather? Is it efficient public services such as modern hospitals, schools and transport? Or is it a variety of events such as exhibitions, open-air markets, concerts and music festivals? Send us your comments to help us find an answer to this difficult question!

Reading
A true story 1 Before you read > Look at the photos and say what you can see. What do you think the story is about?
The story of Alexis and Christian’s tiny house on wheels Alexis Stephens and Christian Parsons wanted a change in their lives and needed an idea. They wanted a good quality of life in a small simple place. They wanted to travel, too. A tiny house on wheels seemed the perfect solution so they decided to build one. The project wasn’t easy, but Christian was good at crafts, and soon they started to plan their new house.
Alexis and Christian are documentary filmmakers. They travel around the USA with their house on wheels and collect stories of other tiny homeowners. As they travel, they take photos and make documentaries about ‘tiny living’. In addition, they have got a website, Tiny House Expedition, to inspire people to create their tiny house projects. What’s great about ‘tiny living’? The couple can think of two answers to this question. The first is that it reveals your essence. In a tiny house, you can only have the things that you really need or love. The second is that you learn to help and share. Tiny homeowners often live together. For them, community is everything.
l . a i A r . e S t a s r m e h le s i p l b m u a s P n la l i m c a
The first step was to find a place to build it. Tom, a good friend and master carpenter, offered his property and his tools. That was a good start. The next step was to get the materials. They collected a lot of recycled materials because they didn’t have a lot of money. Christian worked hard on the house and Alexis helped with the accessories. After nine months, the beautiful tiny house was ready and the happy couple moved to their new home on wheels.
The house is 39 m2. It’s got a small kitchen with a cooker, a fridge and a sink, and a bathroom with a shower and a toilet. There is a small living room with a sofa and a fold-up table. There isn’t a cupboard or a wardrobe, but there are some shelves and storage cabinets. There are two bedrooms. One of the bedrooms has got four windows and it feels spacious.

An opinion essay 1 Read Willy’s essay about his best holidays and the reasons why the place he visited is an ideal holiday place.
My best holidays were in the mountains two years ago. My family and I stayed in a house in the mountains near a lake. The house was small but comfortable and the area was beautiful and quiet. We were very happy to be there. During the day, we sailed on the lake and walked around the area. I think a lake by the mountains is an ideal place for a holiday because you can do a lot of outdo or activities. You can go sailing or fishing in the lake. You can also go hiking in the mountains. Many people want to spend their holidays in big cities but not me! I don’t like big cities because they are very busy and I like open spaces. I want to enjoy the great outdo ors in my holidays! Hi everyone! You know I usually hate Mondays, but last Monday was a really amazing day! It was a public holiday, so it wasn’t necessary to go to school. My dad and I wanted to go fishing early in the morning. We decided to get up early and that was the only bad part about the day! It was cold! We walked down a quiet river near our home to go fishing. We didn’t collect any fish, but it didn’t matter. Fishing with my dad was fun! Also, my mum baked a lot of biscuits for us. They were delicious! When we walked back home, we didn’t have any more biscuits!
After lunch, my brother David wanted to go cycling. My brother is normally very lazy, but we cycled about ten kilometres! We cycled around a beautiful park. It was a bit cloudy but hot. The park has an amazing playground and we played there for an hour. Then, some kids invited us to play football with them. I was so excited because I scored three goals! Did David score any goals? No, he didn’t!
Monday was a really amazing day. I want all Mondays to be like that!

In the evening, my friend Emma called me because she wanted to go to the cinema. But it wasn’t possible for us to choose a film. So I asked David because he knows about films. In the end, we decided to watch a film called Summer Days. When we arrived at the cinema, a lot of our friends from school were there! We watched the film together and we talked a lot. It was great fun!

We travelled to an island and we stayed in a hotel near the beach. The hotel was very small and quiet. A family owned the hotel and they were lovely people. During the day, we walked to the beach and enjoyed swimming in the sea. In the evenings, we walked around the beautiful town and listened to live music in cafés. In my opinion, an island is the perfect place for a holiday because you can have a special time with your family. You can go sailing or cycling around the town. You can also have dinner in great restaurants and listen to live music. Some people want to spend their holidays in theme parks, but I don’t like them because they are very loud and I prefer quiet places. I want to enjoy the sun, sea and food on my holidays! By Sian, 14
