SCIENCE

Small but Special These animals are small. But they are amazing! Sugar gliders have got big eyes and small ears. They are very small – 17 cm – and their tail is very long – 19 cm. They sleep during the day. You can see them in the air at night. Yes! In the air! Can sugar gliders fly? No, they can’t. But they can glide! They can glide 90 m from one tree to another tree. Imagine that! Sugar gliders live in trees in the forests of Australia. They like sugar. They eat nectar from flowers. They eat insects too.

Poison dart frogs are very small – 2.5 cm – but they are very toxic. They have got poison in their skin. The poison in one frog can kill ten adult men! They don’t use their poison to catch insects. They use it for defence. There are poison dart frogs of different colours. They can be red, green, orange, yellow and blue. They eat insects. They live in rainforests in Central and South America. They are amazing animals!

Project A presentation Let’s analyze. 1 Look at the slides from a presentation. What are they about?

Visit Costa Rica! Costa Rica is a small but beautiful country in Central America. Its capital city is San José.

Let’s do it! Step 1

Sit in groups of three or four students. Choose a place to visit. Go online and find a map, and four or five photos or video clips of the place. Find out information about it: location, main attractions, animals, climate, etc. Step 2 Organize the information on the Project Planning sheet. Remember to use vocabulary and structures from Units 4, 5 and 6. Step 3

Make your presentation. Choose one of these options: In Costa Rica, there are beautiful beaches and great rainforests.

• Use PowerPoint or a web-presentation tool to make your presentation. Add information about the place. Add your photos or video clips. • Make a poster using the slides in Exercise 1 as a guide.

Go to the beach. • You can swim in the sea. • You can walk on the beach. • You can sit in the sun and listen to music.

Explore the rainforest!

Step 4

Share your work.

• If you used a presentation tool, show the slides and give your presentation. • If you created a poster, show it to your class and give your presentation.

• There are tropical trees. • There are beautiful flowers. • There are nice rivers.

Discover amazing animals!

Visit Costa Rica. It’s an amazing place. It’s near the Equator and temperatures are from 18°C to 30°C all year! There are monkeys and tropical birds.
