This week, Active! magazine presents two fantastic young sports stars.
Belle and Paige Wheeler are sisters. They live in Wellingborough, England, and they are drag racers. Dragsters are very fast cars. They travel a very short distance at a very high speed. Paige’s dragster goes from 0 km per hour to 96 km per hour in three seconds! Its top speed is 135 km per hour. ‘I love it,’ she says. ‘It’s so cool!’ Paige wants to be a full-time drag racer when she leaves school.
Belle never drives on normal roads because she is very young but she often drives at 80 km per hour at the race track. Her sister, Paige, is her hero. ‘I want to beat Paige in a race,’ Belle says. In their free time, Paige usually plays volleyball and goes shopping. Belle always meets her friends and plays video games. The Wheeler sisters are sometimes late for school but they are never late for a race! They love to get ready for races. They always wear a helmet and special clothes. They don’t always win the races but they always enjoy them! Full name: Paige Angel Wheeler Born: August 1998 Favourite subject: design and technology: textiles Favourite colour: fluorescent pink Full name: Belle Opal Wheeler Born: September 2003 Favourite subject: art Favourite colour: purple

Interview with Jack Robinson,
the best teenage surfer on the planet!
Jack, where do you live? I live in the west of Australia. I see. Do you live in a big city? No, I don’t. I live in Margaret River. It’s a quiet town near the beach. That’s interesting. How often do you exercise? I exercise every day. I love it! And when and where do you go surfing? Well, I go surfing when there are big waves. It’s always a good idea to catch a wave! And I usually go to the beaches near my home. But I also travel around the world to go surfing. France, Spain, California, Tahiti and Hawaii have great waves. And what other activities do you do? I often go fishing and I sometimes go exploring in the forests near my home. I also play table tennis with my friends. It’s fun! You’re famous for your surf – and for your haircut too! Do YOU cut your hair? No, I don’t. My father cuts my hair but I always give him a few tips. I like my haircut. And it’s ideal for surfing. I don’t want my hair on my face when I surf! 2013 #1 on Surfer Magazine Hot 100 Junior list 2014 Winner of North Shore Surf Shop Pro Junior Competition, Sunset Beach, Hawaii

e s l u Pmagazine Winter sports in Canada Canada is a fantastic place for winter sports. Ice hockey is the official national sport. Skiing, dog-sledding and ice biking are also popular. Here are some interesting questions and answers about these sports. What is ice biking? Ice biking is cycling on ice or snow! Ice bikes have got special tyres so they can travel on ice. In winter, you can watch ice-bike races in many Canadian towns.
How do you play ice hockey? There are two teams of six players. Players skate on the ice. They don’t use a ball – they use a puck (rubber disc). They hit the puck with their sticks. The game is divided into three periods. Each period is 20 minutes long. Where do people go skiing in Canada? Canada has got hundreds of mountains and about two hundred ski destinations. Whistler, near Vancouver, is a very popular ski resort. About two million people go there every year. It is enormous. It has got 200 ski runs and 39 ski lifts! Where is dog-sledding popular? Dog-sledding is a popular sport in northern Canada. People sit on a sled and about six to twelve dogs pull the sled. There is a famous race called the Canadian Challenge race. It is a 500-km race. Racers are called ‘mushers’ and they take about twelve hours to finish the race! 1

Project A collaborative podcast Let’s analyze. 1 Read the definition. Do you listen to podcasts? podcast: a podcast is a recorded voice message. You can listen to podcasts on a smart phone, a tablet or a computer. In a collaborative podcast, two or more people record their voice messages. 2 Read the podcast. Then choose the correct options.
In the morning, I get up at 6.30 am and I have a shower. Susan
Let’s do it! Step 1
Sit in groups of four or five students. Choose a topic for your podcast. Here are some ideas: • • • •
Our idols Our daily routine Our free time Our resolutions for this year
Step 2 Organize the contents of your podcast on the Project Planning sheet. Match your topic to one of the units in the book and use vocabulary and structures from it. Step 3 Make your podcast. Choose one of these options: • Go online and search for a free podcasting tool. Record your podcast and save it. • Make a poster using the podcast in Exercise 1 as a model. Each group member creates an avatar and writes his/her message in a speech bubble. Step 4
Then I get dressed and I have breakfast. Pol
Share your work.
• If you recorded your podcast, share the link with your teacher and class. Listen to your classmates’ podcasts. • If you created a poster, show it to your class and read your voice messages aloud.
After breakfast, I tidy my room and I go to school. Martin
Morning classes start at 8 am and finish at 12 pm. I have lunch at school. Amy
