Start Selfish Magazine comes at a time of economic difficulty and upheaval, that may have been caused by greed, selfishness and poor planning for the future. This all sounds very serious, but is it a fitting name for a studentproduced lifestyle magazine? I’m not sure, but our intentions are positive: Provide some insight into student life and interests, all while ‘selfishly’ gaining experience in producing a publication. In this, our debut issue, we offer some advice on surviving the expenses of student life, as well as on editing photos into stunning, beautiful images. Looking for action? Check out our review of ski hills, profile of the Telus World Ski & Snowboard Festival, and introduction to the world of elite soccer–or ‘football,’ as most of the world knows it. Searching for new tunes? Consider Expendable Youth…and read our amusing and insightful interview with this emerging band. And round out your Selfish experience by indulging in some eye-candy – some engaging photos at the close of the mag. So, welcome to LaSalle College’s student publication. I think you’ll be glad you got Selfish. – Daryl Askey, March 2009

How to use Photoshop to recreate a perfect photo

Why Photoshop is more expensive than cosmetics

How-To

Have you ever wondered why those celebrities look so amazing on the cover of the magazine? Taking a nice portrait is not easy, because it involves people’s feeling, expression and position; somehow not everyone is a photographer who knows how to pose and let people feel comfortable with the camera. Therefore today we will talk about how to use Photoshop to turn a so-so photo into a perfect photo.

Photoshop

Five tips for keeping your photos looking good!

1. Color adjust When you get a photo the first thing you should do is adjust the color of image. Usually auto level and auto contract give you a pretty good result but auto color does not always work.

2. Eye scanning You need to notice several areas which usually need to be fixed. She is a beautiful girl! However in order to make her looks perfect, I highlight it where we are going to improve a bit.

3. Erase marks My instructor has told me to “remove all the marks on her skin unless she is Cindy Crawford. You can use Spot healing brush tool, Healing brush tool and Patch tool. Those tools can pretty much get rid of all the marks.

8 Selfish.Magazine.

How-To

Because of the angle, somehow the shape of our arms, legs, chin, belly and hip may not look so good. Pucker tool is a helpful tool for reshaping. At the same time you also need Freeze Mask tool and Thaw Mask tool to protect the area which you don’t want to be affected. (Filter-Liquefy)

Photoshop

4. Body shaping

5. Smooth skin The model’s skin looks absolutely amazing. This skill is often used by the photo which going to be a magazine covers. First, you need to “select” (see the example at right) the place that you don’t want to be blurred and then inverse it. Use surface blur to soften the skin but be aware don’t over do it.

Mountain Review

Review

10 Selfish.Magazine.

Grouse Mountain Tourists, tourists, tourists: This is the interesting thing this mountain is really known for. Since it is called the peak of Vancouver and offers much more than just boarding and skiing this mountain attracts a lot of tourists that come to visit Vancouver . The tourists aren’t usually too bad to get in your way on the weekdays but the weekends are a different story. Usually on the weekends their are a great number of families and tourists that lead to really long lineups for the chairlifts. Time wise it is best to hit up grouse mountain on the weekdays anytime before 3pm; this way you almost never even have to wait in the line ups for your chair. On the weekends you could sometimes be waiting for over 25 minutes in the lineup for your chair; this does also happen on other mountains too on weekends and holidays. Weather-wise, Grouse gets an average of 850cm of snow every year and doesn’t get too foggy either. The main problem is when the runs get icy due to lack of snow and minus temperatures. If it is below zero up on Grouse and didn’t snow up there for a few days I suggest you don’t bother going up there; this actually will happen at any mountain too if the same type of weather persists.

Big White You step out of your lodge with a hangover to find your run a few steps from the door; that is just another day in Big white. Located in the Okanagan an hour away from Kelowna this mountain gets served up with fine fluffy champagne powder from the interior. This isn’t the same kind of snow you get on the west coast, this kind is a lot lighter and dryer perfect for the steep runs. The name Big White does not come from the snow the mountain gets but the lack of sunshine it receives, and fog that sometimes comes in. A great thing about this resort is how the runs intersect through the town and the lodges. So, if you’re really lucky you could get a lodge that is a few metres away from a run ,which a lot of them are. After a day of hitting the slopes you want to go out and have some innocent fun. Most likely you can find a party nearby if it’s the weekend or holidays. If not there are two bars in the village where you could meet interesting characters to enjoy a good time with. Another great place to go to is snow pine estates which is about a ten to fifteen minute walk to from the village. Usually you will find a house there rented out by young adults that have parties going here and there and welcome anyone who doesn’t turn out to be a big jackass.

Cypress Mountain

Whistler Blackcomb

It is the largest out of all three north shore mountains with 600 The praise this mountainous ski town receives is quite overrated acres of skiable terrain. sometimes. As well, it is hosting some of the winter Olympic events that are coming to Vancouver causing closure for some dates in the 09/10 season. The great thing about this mountain is the amount of runs it has compared to Seymour and Grouse. The mountain being not too big and not too little, will always have something to discover in all 52 trails. Once you get bored of the trails go hit up the terrain park . The only bummer about the park is the mandatory helmet rule where park staff might try to revoke your pass if you’re not wearing one. Luckily, when I was there without a helmet I only got yelled at a few times and not my pass being revoked. If you go to Quebec the provincial law states that you have to wear a helmet in any mountain’s terrain park; so this isn’t too bad at all.

Mt. Baker If you love powder, you’ll love Mt. Baker. This mountain holds the world record for the most snowfall of 98-99 with a whopping 2,896 cm and continues to get a lot of pow every year. This mountain is in Washington state and only about an hour drive from the Vancouver area. It costs $43 for how much snow it receives and the size of its terrain, which kind of beats whistler for sure. It also has an incredible backcountry and enough powder to hit up pillows, tree lines, and fat drops. For the price and its location this is a mountain that will changes your mind about the next trip to whistler.

Now really known to the world there are more and more lengthier lineups every year to the lifts, but all in all the incredible terrain this mountain has to offer is undeniable. With over 8000 acres of skiable terrain there is so much to explore on both these mountains. You would definitely want to plan a trip for a few days up in this mountain town. There are over 200 trails, 5 terrain parks, and 37 lifts giving you endless terrain of shred. You can even hit up the backcountry before the season starts and still get mad lines in the powder. Even in warmer days when you think the season is done you can still catch some gnar up here. The Whistler and Blackcomb mountains are open for various times through out all of spring, and the Blackcomb glacier opens up for the summer. Not to forget about the nightlife and parties up in whistler you won’t want to miss the Telus ski and snowboard festival held every year up here. The festival is a huge 10 day mash up of art, music, and of course skiing and boarding. Greg

The Sensational Expendable Youth It all started in a living room in Kerrisdale, where Mike and Matt produced their first masterpieces. Two years ago they could never think that they would become Vancouver Club Scene Sensation. These days you can find them almost everywhere: they are DJing at Stereotype Fridays in Celebrities, Gorg-O-Mish After-Hours, Far Away Fridays at the Media Club, doing Radiozero podcasts, managing Chalkedup. com, and much more. I was really excited to interview these super talented and enthusiastic guys.

12 Selfish.Magazine.

Mirya: You call yourself Expendable Youth. What’s the origin of the name? I know there’s a song called Expendable Youth by Slayer. Is there some connection? Matt: Oh, yes, in fact, there is. Mike: We picked a name a long time ago, because we had our first night DJing, so the manager was bugging us that he needed name by tomorrow. So we did some brainstorming, and just picked that. Matt: I think, there’s some influ-

ence, because we used to be metal fans, and still are. So half of it is a personal thing, and half- marketing. Mirya: Interesting. What genre of music do you consider your work to be and who are your major influences? Matt: It’s a little bit weird, and a little bit dimensional. I think as an Expendable Youth project it would be more focusing on electro, electro house, indie; we also play Swedish house, tech house, minimal techno. Mike: It depends...

on a party. I think the biggest people that we look to are MadDecent, because they do a lot of the same. They combine all of those. Matt: And as for influence: a lot of local. We are friends with people who have been throwing parties in the past five years: MyGayHusband, Paul Devro. Paul Devro is probably the main one. The guy who recognized us. We share a lot of taste, our passion for the music; and all the credit has to go to him. In Van-

couver all DJs are like a big family. Mike: It’s been of eclectic I guess. Mirya: Are you guys from BC? Matt: No, I was born in Canada, but lived in Mississippi. I and Mike really come from different backgrounds. Geographical, I mean. Mike: Oh yeah, true. As for me, I grew up in BC. Mirya: So, guys where did you study? Matt: We both finished UBC, where we met, actually. I finished political science. Mike: Me- English, History.

Mirya: That’s amazing, because not a lot of people today like to continue their education at universities. Matt: So true, not many people we know. Mirya: And how long have you known each other and how did you meet? Mike: We met through university, as Matt said. We ended up as roommates, living in Kerrisdale. We both needed a place, and we got along together. Matt: We met each other at the second semester, so we know each other more than four years. DJing grew

up out of our friendship. Our tastes in music are similar. Mike: And when we graduated, we were thinking “so what we’re going to do now.” And DJing was something we wanted to do. We had our first turntables in our living room. Mirya: So for how long you’ve been DJing? Mike: Two years, it all started springsummer 2007. Mirya: You are the members of Chalkedup. com and Radiozero, tell me more about it. Mike: Matt and I started Chalkedup. com together long

time ago, this was even before djing, around three years or so. Some of our friends helped us: one guy was writing, Matt knew a great programmer. Basically we decided to make a web site about music and upcoming events. And I wanted to do it top quality. Actually, next month or so, we’re going to have a new design. Matt: It all started more like a magazine format, now it’s more social networking. We just want to let guys know where to shop, what events are going on, what’s happening

in Van. Mike: About Radiozero: it all started four or five years ago. It’s been a while now, that we (Expendable Youth) are doing it, around one and a half years. I was pretty excited to do crazy disco dancing on the radio show. And not long time ago we started Far Away Fridays at the Media Club that consist mostly from our podcasts, because people enjoy Radiozero music. Mirya: Well, that’s cool. But what has been your biggest challenge as a band? Selfish.Magazine.

The Sensational Expendable Youth

“You can do what you want to do and if you can say I love what I do, this is success.”

Mike: I think to get together. Matt: Oh, totally, because the last 10 months I’ve been living in Seattle, though I came back, for the last 10 months it was really hard. Mike: Yeah, and another challenge is to start. We wanted to make our music really good quality, to concentrate on music, not the image. Mirya: So how would you define the word “success”?

14 Selfish.Magazine.

Mike: Well, you can do what you want to do and if you can say I love what I do, this is success. Mirya: Do you seek fame and fortune? Matt: Hmm, we don’t want to concentrate on the image. Because if you’re doing great music, it doesn’t matter how you look, you can be even a troll. Mike: Yeah, we’ve always been trying to do good music. For us image is not important.

Wall of Fame Tell me about one of your worst habit or quality? Matt: over grooming Mike: under grooming What would be your first question to the people of Antarctica? What would you wear for a party in Antarctica? Mike: That’s crazy! Can I stay at your place? Matt: We’d throw a party in purple furry Russian hats. Which super power do you like to have? Mike: I’ve always wanted the cars to have indicator if I’ve ever seen this car before. If I take a look inside your refrigerator what would I find? Mike: Roast beef, Cherry Garcia Ice Cream, Peanut Butter, some expired food. Matt: Sometimes it’s weird to see how people put up lots of their images on their web sites, write their bio, but do nothing about their music, and call themselves DJs, though never played at clubs. Mike: Yeah, actually, we do a lot around town, but we’re local guys, and we’re happy about it. We know people. But there

are still lots of things we’d love to do. Mirya: What advice do you have for people who want to start DJing? Matt: Be concentrate on good music, not on image. Mike: Yeah. Be tasteful, be sensible. And just do it, don’t worry. If your music sounds cool, you will succeed.

What will you do if you have a time machine? Matt: I would like to go to see if Jesus was a real guy. What would you take to the Moon? Matt: My laptop Mike: 10 pounds of roast beef

Mirya Nezvitskaya Photos by Vitali Poluzhnikov

If you were cartoon characters, what would you be? Matt& Mike: The Rocky & Bullwinkle (Personally, they remind me Pinky & the Brain more – Mirya)

History Of Soccer

Sport

Games revolving around the kicking of a ball have been played in many countries throughout history. According to FIFA, the “very earliest form of the game for which there is scientific evidence was an exercise of precisely this skilful technique dating back to the 2nd and 3rd centuries BC in China (the game of cuju). Various forms of football were played in Europe, though rules varied greatly by both period and location. The modern rules of football are based on the mid-19th century efforts to standardize the widely varying forms of football played at the public schools of England. During the 1850s, many clubs unconnected to schools or universities were formed throughout the English-speaking world, to play various forms of football. The first official international football match took place in 1872 between Scotland and England in Glasgow. Today, football is played at a professional level all over the world. Millions of people regularly go to football stadiums to

follow their favourite teams, while billions more watch the game on television. A very large number of people also play football at an amateur level. According to a survey conducted by FIFA published in 2001, over 240 million people from more than 200 countries regularly play football. Its simple rules and minimal equipment requirements have no doubt

aided its spread and growth in popularity.

According to FIFA’s Big Count, 2,695,712 people played soccer in Canada in 2006. Soccer is arguably the second-most popular sport in Canada behind hockey. One of the earliest recorded games was played in Toronto in 1859 between the St.. George’s Society and a team of Irishmen. Games were played in New Westminister in 1862 and in Victoria in 1865. The first game played under modern rules took place in Toronto in 1876, after which the Dominion Football Association,

the first recorded Football Association outside the British Isles, was formed in Toronto in 1877 to foster competition between local sides. Toronto FC became the first Canadian club in Major League Soccer in 2007, joining the highest level of professional soccer in the United States. A second Canadian club in Vancouver was announced on March 18th, 2009. Diary of Purple Shoes or How to Save Money 18 Selfish.Magazine.

It was a perfect afternoon.. I was walking down the street, when I noticed that purple reflection at a show-window. Purple velvet high heels looked at me. I started feeling that my heart was melting, I couldn’t wait anymore. I needed to get them. As I walked into the store, everything seemed to be so wonderful. Those shoes would be an essential part of my shoe wardrobe. I know it wasn’t a good time to use my credit card, but I couldn’t resist. Suddenly a lady with a bright smile said that my card seemed to be blocked. No, not nowI thought. Seemed to be that I had no other choice but just to run away in shame. That was my sad story one year ago. Today I’m an expert in managing my money, though sometimes I still behave like a shoe maniac. Wouldn’t it be great to win the lottery or find a rich husband or wife and suddenly have enough money to pay off all your debts and enjoy being rich for the rest of your life! If we are realistic, it is not likely to happen(well, you can marry someone who is rich, but it’s not the fact that you would share one bank account). And even if the dream came true, you would probably find that having a lot of money does not end financial concerns. Even millionaires need to know how to manage money. Money management skills are needed no matter how much or how little one has, especially this is really important for a student. While it’s hard to think about planning for the future when pay day is a week away and your wallet and checkbook are empty, you can learn to manage dollars carefully.

Last year when I was really concerned about my money, I started doing some research, and creating my own finance plan that would help me to save money. I found out that mostly students make 5 money mistakes: 1. Getting Into Credit Card Debt 2. Squandering Your Student Loan Money 3. Ruining your credit score 4. Not budgeting 5. Wasting money So I created my own strategy as follows: 1. Write down all my monthly expenses, savings, assets, and debts 2. Every payday withdraw cash for groceries, entertainment, and spending money: put into envelopes 3. Build an emergency fund of $1,000 for unexpected things such as car repair and shoe buying  4. Concentrate my extra

money every month on debt, starting with the smallest balance To help me track of my progress and keep me honest I created a spreadsheet with two sheets. The first sheet is where I document my budget: monthly expenses and what goes into each envelope. On the second page of the spreadsheet I track my savings and debt. My strategy was not to save much beyond the $1,000 emergency fund until I was out of debt. Remember to start with the smallest balance first while paying the minimum payment on every account. Once that smallest balance is paid off you’ll have a bit extra to work with every month. Proceed to the new smallest balance, and so on. Like making a snowman, your ability to pay off debt grows over time. It was really hard to start for me. I was never buying

Diaries groceries – I was always going to restaurants, because I even didn’t know how to cook. I was always spending a lot on coffee shops, because coffee was the only way to keep me energized. I was spending a lot on partying: clubs, Vodka, Tequila, Whiskey, and Scotch. I was spending everything on shoes; I loved them more than anything in the world. I was spending lots of money on books, records and my art supplies. So one day I just started a new page of my life, and it never felt better. And I managed to find out amazing ways to cut my expenses. First of all, I bought a cook book, and started learning cooking, and now I’m a great fan of cooking! I cut down on coffee, and it eventually, I could finally sleep at night. It still hard for me not to buy shoes, but at least now I know where to stop. I signed up for Public Libraries to borrow books from there, and I just fall in love with the smell of books at libraries! As for my love to spending on vinyl, I started to go to thrift stores for some

old and rare ones. My life really changed from that day. It helped me a lot. Now I know where my money goes, how to save money on my goals like MBA degree, purple Nissan Pathfinder and villa in Costa Rica, I

know my limits and I keep them in control. Smart use of your money and your credit in college will enable you to spend the money you earn when you graduate on things you really want (a new car, a nice apartment or house, a

great wardrobe, travel, or whatever) instead of all your disposable income going towards debt repayment. Mirya Nezvitskaya, A shoe maniac
