THE BEST & WORST MAKEUP FOR EYELASH EXTENSIONS

T

he good news: Your eyelash extensions look dope. The bad news: Half your eye-makeup collection needs to go. True, eyelash extensions can last for up to six weeks, but wearing the wrong makeup can lead to lash fallout and extension damage, dramatically decreasing the length of time your lash extensions look full and fabulous. Pencil eye-liner: One weird consequence of having mile-long individual false lashes: Your eyelashes get tangled. And dragging a sticky pencil liner along the lash line, where eyelash extensions form their tenuous bonds, just worsens tangling and lash fallout. And there’s the aftermath: Cream and gel eye-liners can leave a gummy residue on extensions, making removal an utter bitch. You’ve been warned. Tubing mascara: Tubing and waterproof mascara will cause extensions to become brittle or any type of oil based mascara can dissolve the bonding agent and shorten the life of your eyelash extensions causing them to fall sooner. Care also needs to be taken in washing off the mascara. Waterproof liquid eye-liner: If it’s not obvious by now, smudgeproof and budge-proof eye makeup is generally bad news for lash extensions. This includes water-resistant or waterproof liquid liner. A liquid eye-liner may seem innocent enough (it’s not creamy or gel-like), but its long-wearing will require rubbing or repeatedly touching your lashes to remove it, all of which will shorten your extensions’ lifespan. Oil-based makeup remover: Keeping your eyelash extensions clean is key to making them last as long as possible. Oil-based makeup removers are best for removing stubborn eye makeup, but they also loosen the glue that bonds extensions to your lashes.

Design your

lashes

Artistry and shaping the eye is so crucial to creating a flattering set of eyelash extensions, it can really make or break a full set sometimes. Take time during the client’s consultation to study their eye shape. It’s well known that we’re all different and come in all shapes and sizes. I’ve read countless beauty articles over the years about face shapes... But did you know about eye shapes? Being eyelash extension experts, naturally, eye shapes play a big part when it comes to designing an eyelash extension plan for our clients. So I wanted to share my expert tips with you so that you can take advantage and get the best out of your eyes and your beauty. Can you guess which eye shape you are?

5 _ M A C R O _ ISSUE 01 2017

It’s one thing to be able to master the technical side of eyelash extensions, but being able to shape the eye and give your client a set that is perfect for their specific features is what will set you apart from other lash artists. Always take into consideration what the client’s eye shape is. Are their eyes deep-set? Or are they protruding? Wide-set or closeset? Do they have hidden lids? Are their eyes round or almond shaped? If you were to put the same length of extensions on someone with protruding eyes as someone with deep set eyes, the extensions would look much shorter on someone deep set eyes. Be sure not to overpower small and close-set eyes with long, heavy extensions. Adding length and curl to hidden lids and deep set eyes can open up and accentuate your clients eyes. Those with almond shaped eyes look stunning with a glamorous cat eye shaped extensions. Those with sparse natural lashes will greatly benefit from Volume lashes. Clients may come in asking for anything from a natural shape to a dramatic baby-doll look. It’s your job as a lash artist to have a thorough consultation with your client to see if what they want is a good fit for their natural lashes. We all know by now that putting an extension that is too heavy and too long on a weak, flimsy natural lash is damaging to your clients lashes. Use the consultation as an opportunity to educate your client on the different styles of lashes and what would be a great fit for them. It may take a couple appointments to figure out what lengths, diameter, curl and placement works best for them and that’s okay! Let your client know that there’s a learning curve with new clients and to make sure they’re communicating with you what is working and what isn’t.

Welcome to Dominican Republic

T

he Dominican Republic is a Caribbean country that occupies the eastern two-thirds of the Caribbean island of Hispaniola. The western one-third of Hispaniola is occupied by the country of Haiti. To the north lies the North Atlantic Ocean, while the Caribbean Sea lies to the south.

For the adventure tourist this Caribbean country offers a diverse countryside comprising tropical rainforests, arid desert expanses, alpine ranges and steamy mangrove swamps. The northern and eastern coasts are dotted with many luxurious resorts however the Dominican Republic has much more to offer than this.

As part of the Caribbean the Dominican Republic has the North Atlantic Ocean lying to its north and the Caribbean Sea to its south. It’s situated on the island of Hispaniola and occupies the eastern two-thirds of the island while Haiti occupies the western third.

There is the wonderful Caribbean music and dance, exotic foods and drink, popular local baseball games, and the remarkable colonial architecture found in the capital Santo Domingo’s Zona Colonial. Tropical maritime with little seasonal temperature variation. There is a seasonal variation in rainfall. The island lies in the middle of the hurricane belt and is subject to severe storms from June to October. In the 17th Century, with the Spanish in control, the French es-

tablished a colony on the island. The Spanish later ceded the western third of Hispaniola in 1697, which in 1804 became known as Haiti. The remainder of the island, then known as Santo Domingo, declared its independence in 1821, however, it was immediately occupied by Haiti. It finally gained total independence in 1844, and became the Dominican Republic, or DR. Ruled by a series of dictators for the next 134 years, democracy was finally introduced in 1978. Caribbean cultures and a visually pleasing outdoor museum, and the eclectic collection of resort destinations strung out along the Amber Coast, east and west of Puerto Plata.

Top five THINGS TO DO IN DOMINICAN REPUBLIC 1. Zona Colonial The Zona Colonial is the historic heart of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. This square mile of pretty streets and shady squares contains some of the oldest colonial buildings in the Western Hemisphere, including the cathedral. 2. Santo Domingo Beyond the Zona Colonial is a fast-moving metropolis of over two million people, where upmarket suburbs rub shoulders with bleak-looking shanty-towns and where quiet parks and museums provide a respite from the capital’s frenetic traffic. 3. Santiago Santiago de los Caballeros (Santiago of the Gentlemen) is the Dominican Republic’s second-largest city. Set in the fertile Cibao Valley, Santiago has historically been the hub of the country’s agricultural riches, and its millionaire families largely owe their fortunes to the sugar and tobacco grown nearby.

If you’re looking for a hassle free holiday that’s big on relaxation then the Dominican Republic is the place to be!

4. Puerto Plata The “Silver Port” lies between the glittering Atlantic Ocean and the imposing bulk of the Pico Isabel de Torres. Its roots go back to 1495, but it was during the 1970s that this once-sleepy provincial back-water was rejuvenated by the advent of mass tourism. 5. Las Terrenas A tiny ramshackle fishing village only 30 years ago, Las Terrenas has developed into one of the Dominican Republic’s most sought-after tourist centres. 2017 01 ISSUE _ M A C R O _ 8

Time for Crepes

Honey Strawberry Honey Strawberry CrepesCrepes • • • • • •

Ingredients Ingredients

3 eggs • 1/2 cup 3 eggs milk • 1/2 cup 1/2 cup milk water • 3 tablespoons 1/2 cup water butter, melted • 3/4 cup 3 tablespoons butter, all-purpose flour melted • 1 1/43/4 cupsifted all-purpose flour sugar cups confectioners’ • 1 1/4 cups sifted confectioners’ sugar

1 tablespoon lemon juice 1 teaspoon lemon zest 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 teaspoon honey 4 cups sliced strawberries

Directions

1. Place the eggs, milk, water, melted butter, 4. Tip and rotate pan to spread batter as thinly flour, and salt in the pitcher of a blender; blend as possible. Flip over when the batter is set and until smooth. the edges are beginning to brown. Cook until the other side begins to brown. Stack finished 2. Blend the cream cheese, confectioners’ sug- crepes on a plate, cover with a damp towel and ar, lemon juice, lemon zest, and vanilla with an set aside. electric mixer until smooth. Gently fold in the whipped cream. 5. To serve, fill each crepe with 1/4 cup sliced strawberries and 1 teaspoon honey, roll up and 3. Heat a lightly oiled griddle or non-stick skil- top with a small dollop of the cream cheese filllet over medium heat. Pour or scoop the batter ing and more sliced strawberries. onto the griddle, using approximately tablespoons for each crepe.

How to making perfect crepes 1. Refrigerate the batter for at least one hour. Gluten, a cross-linked chain of two proteins, forms when wheat flour and water are agitated. It’s a desirable reaction when you’re making things like bread, but is not so desirable in cakes, pie crusts and crêpes. Refrigerating the batter after it’s been mixed, “relaxes” the gluten and makes for light, airy crêpes. 2. Use a heavy bottomed stainless steel pan. Your pan n needs to heat evenly, so it’s important that it has a thick bottom that will achieve this. Also, I’ve found that non-stick pans don’t evenly brown the crêpes (leaves a weird mottled pattern), so I prefer using a pan without non-stick coating.

3. Slowly heat the pan to the desired temp. If you try to heat it too quickly you’ll constantly be fiddling with the temperature knob because it will start burning or get too cool. On my gas stove, I put the pan on the large burner and have the heat set a smidge below medium, but you’ll have to figure out what works best for you. Also, make sure the pan is hot enough, otherwise your crêpe will stick to the pan. 4. Over butter the first crêpe. By “over butter” I don’t mean deep fry, but you want to make sure you have enough butter in the pan to thinly cover the bottom and part of the sides. Usually I just unwrap one end of the stick and make a swirling motion around the pan.

Crepes are extremely versatile, perfect for brunch, lunch, a light supper and definitely dessert. The thin, French-style pancakes can be filled with ham and cheese and paired with a green salad for a savoury version, or topped with fruit and whipped cream to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Janet McDonald Graphic designer / Instructor Cats owner over 30 years

Why do you love cats? One of my cats is just very loving, she’s really funny, she’s kinda nerdy, and she’s just very cute. And she has got a very loving personality, I think that’s mainly why. And also it’s a bit weird, often we’ve been looking, and we’ve said “how odd is it that we have these little furry animals walking around our house! “ I love all animals, but there are something just unusual about the cat. And also they’re easy to take care of. That’s the other thing. They’re independent, and easy take care of, and all cats are just so different. My sisters cat likes to play on the piano, it walks across the piano keys, and if I close the piano, he just like “Don’t close the piano!”. You know, he likes to play on the piano, and he walks crossing. They all are weird. Cats are weird.

How is your cat like? My cat Noodles, is just extremely loving. She’s just very goodnatured. It’s so nice to come home to just have this furry thing, you know, being happy. What is the most loving behaviour of your cat? Noodles crawled up when I was sleeping, so she sleeps in a little round ball right beside me, and I love that. Most the time she is cuddly. She’s the most cuddly loving pet ever. And you can hold her. How can we take good photos of cats on Instagram? I like using a little tripod, and doing time-lapse or slow-motion. I did a funny slow-motion last night, of licking her mouse, it was so funny!
