Two Decades of Celebrating Latino Films: Congratulations to the Media Arts Center San Diego on the 20th Annual San Diego Latino Film Festival!

elcome to MEDIA ARTS Center San Diego’s 20th Anniversary San Diego Latino Film Festival (March 7-17, 2013). As I look back on the past 20 years, I am reminded of the hundreds of amazing volunteers, festival staff, and family members who have given so much of their time and effort to make this annual celebration of cinema a successful reality. We’ve worked through many highs and lows together, but not once did we give up. I’m humbled and to all of them, I am forever grateful! So much has changed in the past 20 years; and at the same time so much has not. The film festival and this annual gathering are still needed to counter racism; examine gun violence in our communities; spotlight environmental concerns; and strive to lessen the high dropout rate of Latino youth. Even though Latinos will become the largest ethnic group in California in July; still the mainstream media permeates airwaves with negative stereotypes, and far too few Latinos are in front and behind the cameras.

At the same time, we see many successes since the film festival began. Many of the actors and filmmakers spotlighted in this year’s 20th Anniversary Showcase - Almodovar, Iñarritu, Garcia Bernal, Cruz, Hayek, Rodriguez and many more, have given their talents and great stories to the world! 20 years is also a good time to look towards the future. We have been fortunate to build an organization that touches so many lives each year; and now, MEDIA ARTS Center San Diego brings great changes in 2013 with its new DIGITAL GYM community technology center, launched this year and offering new community programs and services. Come by our DIGITAL GYM and enjoy our CINEMA, WORKSHOPS, STORE, and LOUNGE. We’ll be screening independent, foreign, and local films in our new CINEMA space; continue to provide new media workshops to youth and adults; sell tasty treats in the LOUNGE; and sell fun techy gifts in our new STORE. To all of YOU, the attendees, there are so many fond memories - seeing you stream in and out of the movie theaters, hearing the laughter, seeing the tears, grabbing quick photos with celebrities, and patiently waiting in lines to see the films. 20th anniversary showcase

n the last twenty years, Latino Cinema has become a force to be reckoned with, introducing audiences from around the world to a whole new generation of artists. Through the years, these films have highlighted underrepresented cultures and ethnicities from regions as diverse as Mexico, Chile, Argentina, and Brazil. Many of these films managed to crossover from the arthouse to the mainstream, thanks in large part to a new wave of talented filmmakers addressing pertinent social and political topics. Many of these Latino films premiered at international film festivals, benefitting from word of mouth from exuberant attendees. In honor of our own Twentieth Anniversary, the programming team of the San Diego Latino Film Festival felt it was fitting that we honor some of the landmarks films of Latino Cinema from the last two decades. This showcase is made possible with a grant from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences.

The Science on Screen Showcase creatively pairs screenings of films with lively presentations by notable science and technology experts. Each film is used as a jumping-off point for a speaker to introduce current research or technological advances in a manner that engages popular culture audiences – from the diverse botany of Baja with Azul Intangible, to learning about astronomy in Nostalgia for the Light and the integration of silicon circuits to the nervous system in Sleep Dealer, to the dangers of drilling near a volcano in Fugue in D Minor. Replacing the bodies of migrant workers are robotic drones maneuvered by Mexican workers through electronic nodes and computer systems. For several years, San Diego Latino Film Festival has included a shorts program of films addressing border issues from around the world. This year, we are proud to announce our 2nd annual program of feature films that explore concepts of how borders affect those on both sides.

Antonio Méndez Esparza (Mexico, 112 min., 2012, Spanish w/ English subtitles) Pedro returns home to his native Mexican mountain village after several years of labor as a migrant worker in the U.S. His savings have earned him a trip home with the hopes of providing for his family and becoming a musician. Upon his return, he faces a familiar but distant wife and teenage daughters who may as well be strangers. This striking film won the Critics Week award for Best Film at 2012 Cannes Film Festival. The majority of the Japanese community believed that “the surrender” of their country was strictly American propaganda. David Riker (USA, 90 min., 2012, English and Spanish w/ English subtitles) Directed by SDLFF alum David Riker (La Ciudad), The Girl tells the story of Ashley (Abbie Cornish), a single mother who has lost her job and the custody of her infant son to social services. The rewards and consequences of her decision become evident after she develops an emotional bond with a young Mexican girl.

egendary master filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky once wrote that films are "a shock to the senses, because they shake our conscience as a pure surreal and poetic act.” I couldn’t agree more. Shock, as an art form, liberates certain feelings that we may initially be afraid to express, engaging the viewer on a purely emotional and visceral level. This is why some of the most iconic cinematographic images in Latin Cinema have had amazing shock value, from the infamous razor blade cutting an eyeball in Luis Buñuel's Un Chien Andalou to the pale eyeless monster of Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth. These strange images are very much influenced by what has been called the land of mystery and magic. In this sense, the UN MUNDO EXTRAÑO program is the perfect platform for honoring 20 years of the San Diego Latino Film Festival. We’ve selected films from five countries that examine the supernatural and horrific, serial killers, ghosts, and the end of the world. They take us to a place where our ancient myths and esoteric tales of folklore come together as a mix of fantastic visions, including our own take on cinematographic genres and subgenres, B-movies, Exploitation films and the Underground circuit. Without a name or location, he begins the long journey of tracking down Larisa and unraveling the mystery of how these precious family memories came to be discarded in the first place. La Camioneta: The Journey of one American School Bus SUN 3/10 / 12:30 / S2 | WED 3/13 / 8:30 / S1 Dir: Mark Kendall (USA, Guatemala, 72 min., 2012) Every day, dozens of decommissioned school buses leave the United States on a southward migration that carries them to Guatemala, where they are repaired, repainted, and resurrected as the brightly-colored camionetas that bring the vast majority of Guatemalans to work each day. “La Camioneta” follows one such bus on its transformative journey.

ocumania, our premiere showcase of documentary films, makes a strong return in 2013 with an eclectic lineup of films that are just as intriguing as any fiction film. This collection of documentaries literally turn the world upside down, as in "¡Vivan las antipodas!", Victor Kossakovsky's visual masterpiece about antipodes-- places that lie exactly opposite each other on the earth. Equally eye-opening is "La Camioneta," about refurbished American schoolhouses that are given a second life as passenger buses in Guatemala. "Harvest of Empire” looks at the issue of immigration from a decidedly different angle, while "Narco Cultura," looks at the controversial music that celebrates narco traffickers on both sides of the US/Mexico border. Politically motivated films like Ecuador's "Con mi corazón en Yambo," Mexico's "El paciente interno," and Puerto Rico's "Las Carpetas" give voice to people who have been devastated by abusive regimes. On the lighter side is Chile's award-winning "Salvavidas" about the strictest lifeguard you've ever met, and "Buscando a Larisa," which envisions a fantastic journey in search of the subject of a mysterious set of Super-8 home movies bought at a flea market. And then there's deeply entertaining "Gimme the Power," a "rockumentary" about the Mexican band Molotov. Finally, two exquisite examples of dramatic storytelling, "Colombianos" and "Habana Muda" round out the list, illustrating just how far people are willing to go to keep their families together. The city’s population has grown exponentially. The roads are constantly congested because they can’t contain the growing number of cars. Such is life in a rapidly growing new metropolis, where expansion often comes at a price to the least fortunate. his year’s 20th Anniversary San Diego Latino Film Festival is proud to celebrate this year’s artists for our PREMIO Corazón awards.

The central image of the Premio Corazón is a wooden heart/nopal carved by David Avalos and covered with a beautiful collage of colored tissue paper and a magnificent pattern of dotted highlights by Susan Yamagata. Susan YamagatA Born in National City and raised in Chula Vista, Susan Yamagata earned her Masters of Fine Art in Printmaking at the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1984. She created collaborative murals in Chicano Park and Los Angeles beginning in 1978. From 1990 to 1995 she worked with the Border Art Workshop/Taller de Arte Fronterizo including participation in the 9th Biennial of Sydney 1992/93. From 2003 to 2012 she designed art pieces used as media interventions for an international coalition of migrant rights groups. Making art objects is an integral part of her daily life, a physical diary of passing days. Most recently these have taken the form of painted postcards, “paper purses”, boxes, wall-hanging plates and bowls and “paper quilts.” She has completed work on assorted home furnishings for an installation project to fill a 10′ x 10′ room at the Next Door Gallery, San Diego in June 2013.

David Avalos Born in San Diego and raised in Old Town National City, David Avalos first heard his brother, Victor, use the word “Chicano” to describe friends back in the 1950s. He encountered Chicana/o art in the early 1970s at the invitation of Salvador Barajas and Guillermo “Yermo” Aranda. From 1978 to 1988 he served as administrative assistant to Centro Cultural de la Raza Directors Josie Talamantez and Veronica Enrique. His efforts with Herman Baca and the Committee on Chicano Rights influenced his socially and politically engaged collaborations with the Border Art Workshop/Taller de Arte Fronterizo where he often teamed with Michael Schnorr and Victor Ochoa. Media art projects with Deborah Small, Elizabeth Sisco and Louis Hock had critics asking: “But is it art?” He earned his Master of Fine Arts at UCSD. Now a Visual and Performing Arts Department Professor at CSU San Marcos he has been employed there since 1991. Winning Poster Artist spotlight Juan Luis Garcia Juan Luis Garcia is a creative from Southern California specializing in photography and graphic design. He works with clients in cultural, non-profit, and commercial fields. His debut photo exhibition and selfpublished book, “Cuba Y Cubans”, garnered international acclaim and was awarded Blurb’s Book of the Month. He is currently working on his second book titled “Face value: Mirror Portraits” where he is photographing 500 people looking at themselves through a two-way mirror. about the poster “With only a couple of weeks left in the poster contest I drove to San Diego in search of inspiration. I went looking to photograph local landmarks like the Gaslamp District, Balboa Park, the kissing sailor statue, the family crossing signs on the freeway, and the lighthouse. It turned out that the statue had been removed and the family crossing signs aren’t promptly replaced after they’ve been stolen. So, after a somewhat disappointing day I knew I had to come up with another idea. I wanted the poster to celebrate the festival as well as latino filmmaking. It was on my drive home that I began daydreaming of my childhood birthday parties and all the fun I had dancing, eating tres leches cake, and of course trying to sneak a peek through my blindfold to hit the piñata. And that’s when it hit me, what better way to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the film festival than with a camera piñata! As I approached Los Angeles I searched for custom piñata makers and found one called Amazing Piñatas Inc. I stopped by to show them my idea and see if they could pull it off in time. The contest deadline was fast approaching but they were able to turn it around with just enough time for me to photograph it and design the poster.” - Juan Luis Garcia

Niños de la Memoria WED 3/13 / 5:30 / S2 Dir. María Teresa Rodríguez (El Salvador, 64 min., 2012) This harrowing documentary, tells the story of the search for hundreds of children who disappeared during the Salvadoran Civil War. Many were survivors of massacres carried out by the U.S.-trained Salvadoran army. Taken away from the massacre sites by soldiers, some grew up in orphanages or were adopted abroad, losing their history and identity. “Niños de la Memoria” weaves together three separate yet intertwined journeys in the search for family, identity and justice in El Salvador, and asks the larger question: How can a post-war society right the wrongs of the past?

Neither lifealtering challenges at home nor cartel violence across the border can keep Las Azaleas from their goal.

Anastacio Rojas MAAC Charter TPP, 5 min. MAAC students in Chula Vista talk about the increased security at the USA/Mexico border and the unnecessary violence that led to the suspicious death of a Mexican citizen.

Behind the Screen: Cybercrimes Against Children Media Arts Center- TPP, 5 min. Agent David Oyos from the Chula Vista Police Department and Assistant District Attorney and Project Safe Childhood Coordinator Alesandra Serrano are interviewed about preventing internet crimes against minors.

Middle School Student Discusses Monroe Clark School Health Clinic Media Arts Center- TPP, 3 min. A new clinic at a middle school in City Heights is helping students get healthy.

Displaced but not Defeated ByKids, 29 min. Sixteen year-old Maria in Cali, Colombia directs and shoots this documentary about how her family has been displaced by the war created by the drug trade. Recognition: Young Parents in New Mexico Media Literacy Project, 7 min. This touching documentary features the personal stories of the directors and the work being done in New Mexico to transform how young parents are viewed and supported. Room to Improve: Albuquerque Schools’ Sex Education Media Literacy Project, 6 min. This video asks critical questions about the state of sex education in Albuquerque Public Schools, and what this means for the young women of color that attend these schools. 67 Sueños: An Introduction 67 Suenos, 3 min. An Oakland organization, 67 Suenos, holds gatherings for migrant youth to lift their voices and share their stories.

Environmental Justice in Imperial Beach MAAC Charter TPP, 8 min. A student looks at the environmental issues at Imperial Beach, how the pollution impacts the local community, and what residents can do to help repair the ecosystem. A Diet for Healthy Minds California Endowment Youth Media Bootcamp, 4 min. Students discuss the importance of eating healthy and how to take steps toward a more balanced lifestyle. Skate City Heights California Endowment Youth Media Bootcamp, 2 min. The need for a skate park in City Heights has been an ongoing debate in San Diego. This video advocates for why building one would be positive for the community. Latino Life by LELA INC Weingart East LA YMCA Youth Institute, 4 min. A music video that takes us through a day in the life of an average Latino teen growing up in Boyle Heights.

In Panama City, skyscrapers along the waterfront have multiplied virtually overnight, rising higher than ever before. The city’s population has grown exponentially. The roads are constantly congested because they can’t contain the growing number of cars. Such is life in a rapidly growing new metropolis, where expansion often comes at the mercy of the least fortunate. With an eye for social justice, Pérez chronicles these changes in what could easily be a companion piece to last year’s SDLFF Audience Award winner, “Paraíso for Sale.”

This "rockumentary" about the Mexican rock band Molotov takes a decisively different approach from most band documentaries. It is as much a profile of the influential band as it is a funny and eye-opening account of the recent political changes in Mexico. While on this journey, we see how the political and social climate in Mexico has informed the band's radical music throughout the years. Bajo el sol Dir: Arcadi Palerm-Artis (2011, 8 min, Mexico, Spanish w/ English subtitles) An extract of myth in a tropical context. Exuberance and beauty are the surroundings. Two twin brothers, only six years old, portray a biblical story of fraternal envy that is still current today. Cardboard Camera Dir: Carlo Olivares Paganoni (2012, 19 min., USA, English) Cameron, an innovative 10-year-old boy who can't afford a video camcorder, creates a cardboard camera instead. Hoping to enter a kids’ film competition, he will need to use his imagination in order to create a movie with the help of his two friends.
