New and wonderful opportunities await attendees of our 2015 film festival. Now at the AMC Fashion Valley Mall 18, it’s a beautiful new venue for festival-goers to eat, meet celebrities, see great films, listen to Sonido Latino, see Arte Latino exhibitions, and gather with families/friends to shop. In addition to the venue at Simon Fashion Valley, we’ll once again be showing movies at our one-of-a-kind movie theater, Digital Gym CINEMA; just nearing its two-year anniversary. From the best of independent/foreign cinema to the zany comedy, The Interview, we’ve had quite a past year; and we encourage all of you to visit our movie theater, and continue to support Latino film & independent programs year-round. Another new and exciting opportunity at this year’s film festival, is the first-ever Creative Careers Expo: Exploring Opportunities in Creative Careers to take place Saturday, March 14 at the Jacobs Center for Non-Profit Innovation’s “Celebration Hall”. This Expo represents the heart of what our organization and film festival is all about: Encouraging youth to go into careers such as film, video, music, technology, video gaming, visual arts etc. in order to bring new voices into these creative industries. Kudos to the amazing staff and volunteers for making this year’s film festival a reality. It’s truly a labor of love and the San Diego - Baja California region is very fortunate to have these tireless and dedicated individuals bringing the best of Latino Cinema to us each year! Finally, MIL GRACIAS to this film festival’s amazing new Presenting Sponsor, San Diego County Lexus Dealers. It means so much to have this financial support that enables our annual celebration of cinema. Nos vemos en el cine!

Opportunity. It is an essential word. It is a word that represents what we truly aspire to in life. This word permeates the industry of film and the experience of every Latino in this country. The positive and negative layers of opportunity are essential in the telling of the story of the Latino, and moreover for us, the Latino experience as told through film. This is where opportunity gets complicated. The history of Latino film is full of stories where opportunity more often than not, had to be taken and rarely given. This history is analogous to a path flooded with obstacles that had to be cleared by the many talented souls that like bards, used the medium of film to tell tales romantic, historic, comedic, horrific, and dramatic. Storytelling through film and television has become the vehicle for the Latino experience to come to life. Whether it is the telenovela or the seemingly rotating Argentinian entry into the oscars, Latino stories have gained popularity now more than ever. Opportunity has in fact opened its doors to Latinos. Alfonso Cuarón, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Guillermo Del Toro, Kate Del Castillo, Salma Hayek, Edward James Olmos, and many others have transcended the entertainment industry to become representative of not only the Latino culture in cinema, but the culture of cinema as a whole. In our 22nd year, our films and programs more than ever represent the evolution of what we do. It is without question, the finest program that we have put together. Films that represent that range of emotions, stories, ethnic experiences, and nationalities that make up Latino cinema are in full display. This year we are so thrilled to feature Argentina as our spotlight country: cinema from this beautiful country consistently releases not only great Latino cinema, but simply great cinema.

MEXICO TODAY S HOWC AS E What defines Mexico today? That definition is no longer confined to the sensational ideas of drug wars and political corruption (although still in existence). What remains of these conflicts are struggles of the family; civic infrastructure; education; and institutional and self-induced oppression. Mexico and its defining characteristics continue to evolve through fantastic theatrical expression. These films are hallmarks of the greater concept of what Mexico is and what it can be. ACTORES S.A. Carlos Sariñana (Mexico, 95 min., 2013, Spanish w/ English subtitles) SAT 3/14 / 3:30 / S12 THU 3/19 / 5:45 / S12 Tomás (Raúl Mendez), a struggling actor, is tasked with his adoptive father’s last dying wish: to ensure that the legacy of his theater lives on. However, a duplicitous relative threatens to take over the playhouse, unless Tomás can come up with funds to keep the theater in his father’s name. In an act of desperation, he posts an advertisement stipulating that he and the theater company’s talents can be contracted for jobs outside of the stage. They are hired to stop the wedding of Rebecca, which results in an unforeseen romantic entanglement, promising to steer their mission off course and into dangerous territory in this dark comedy co-starring Iliana Fox and Eugenio Bartilotti. voice in Mexican cinema in Alonso Ruiz Palacios. He embarks on a path to exact revenge; but fate interferes and inexplicably joins him with Elvira. Bonded by tragedy, the two explore the possibility of new beginnings in this elegiac and powerful drama. GÜEROS Dir. Upon arriving, Tomás is surprised that Sombra and his roommate are on “strike” against a student revolt occurring in their college. Without the pressure of academic obligations, the three are free to pursue other interests; mainly making contact with a singer Tomás and Sombra listened to as kids. Dually nostalgic and modern, this black and white ode to French New Wave cinema is an unforgettable experience, marking the arrival of a fantastic new voice in Mexican cinema Alonso Ruiz Palacios.

Antes de que Nos Olviden is a raw documentary about those who experienced this war, which still continues today. The voices of parents, siblings, wives, and children of the victims tell their personal stories of suffering. A RG E N T I N A F ILM S H OWC AS E Argentine cinema has had a fantastic run this past year. This should come as no surprise: Argentina has produced several of the most beloved and acclaimed films over the last several years, among them The Secret in the Eyes, Burnt Money, and Nine Queens. It should also be noted that Argentina’s Wild Tales has not only taken the festival world by storm, but also scored itself a nomination for Best Foreign Film at the 2015 Oscars. This is our chance to honor cinema that is unafraid of being bold and brash, elegiac, lyrical, inventive, and, most importantly, wholly original.

The only thing they need is a recognizable movie star. Through a series of misunderstandings, they manage to book Argentina’s biggest film star, Ricardo Darin (playing himself), who believes he’s doing a favor for a friend. The production goes unsurprisingly off-course, leading to a situation that catapults the trio into the the public’s eye for all the wrong reasons, in this zany and hilarious comedy. JAUJA Dir. His journey through the Blue Desert is his chance to understand the purpose of life and the meanings of human experience. The imagined world in this modern and visually singular science fiction film is a barren and immaterial one; suggesting the only way to find affirmation in ones life is through transcendence. The increasingly hostile living environment elicits savage instincts between the inhabitants, indicating that very little separates humans from zombies, in this fully imagined post-apocalyptic world. THE SPANISH VERSION OF DRÁCULA (1931) Dir: Enrique Tovar Ávalos (uncredited), George Melford (USA, 104 min., 1931, Spanish w/ English Subtitles, Horror) SUN 3/22 / 1:00 / DGC In 1931, while Tod Browning was directing Bela Lugosi in his timeless film, another cast and crew would take over the sets at night to shoot their own version of the same film in Spanish language with Spanish-speaking actors. The cast and crew were mostly from Spanish-speaking countries, including Mexico, Spain, and different parts of Central and South America. The Mexican director Enrique Tovar Ávalos was uncredited in favor of his American co-director George Melford, who couldn’t speak Spanish. Since it was filmed at night after Tod Browning wrapped his version for the day, the Spanish version’s crew had access to dailies, which they were able to improve upon for their own version.

DO C UMA NIA! The documentary tradition is alive and well in this collection of feature length films that expose the realities of the world in exuberant cinematic fashion. In our pursuit of truth, documentary film stands alone as the medium through which we become engaged in experiences far removed from our own. This is your opportunity to stand with Claudia Paz y Paz, the first female Attorney General of Guatemala, as she fights corruption in her department; to listen to Café Tacvba’s new album as it’s being recorded; and last but certainly not least, to become engaged with the struggle of indigent youth living in derelict neighborhoods in Mexico. BURDEN OF PEACE Dir. Joey Boink (Guatemala / Spain / Netherlands; 77 min., 2014, Spanish w/ English subtitles) SUN 3/22 / 8:15 / S15 As the newly appointed Attorney General of Guatemala, Claudia Paz y Paz knows what she has to do. To prove that corruption will no longer be tolerated on her watch, she rounds up a large criminal organization that her own officers appear to have been a part of. Her determination encounters strong resistance from powerful elites, who believed they were above the law before her arrival. Their opposition threatens to thwart Claudia’s plans to create revolutionary changes in Guatemala as evidenced by this gripping and unforgettable documentary. EL HOGAR AL REVES Dir. Itzel Martínez (Mexico, 80 min., 2014, Spanish w/ English subtitles) FRI 3/13 / 8:45 / DGC SUN 3/15 / 1:30 / S12 SAT 3/21 / 12:30 / S13 In an unfair country, women work day and night far from home, while their children learn to survive between loneliness and emptiness. They grow to become teenagers, socially quarantined in one of the many low income neighborhoods of identical small houses, characterized overcrowding and scarcity. Their mothers, mostly workers in transnational factories, go in and out on buses, which take them two hours away from home for their twelve hour shifts. Meanwhile, their children muddle through their day in tiny houses of 40 square meters. In spite of everything, they look for a way to move ahead and pursue their dreams. HOTEL NUEVA ISLA Dir. Irene Gutierrez, Javier Labrador (Spain/Cuba, 70 min., 2014, Spanish w/ English subtitles) SAT 3/14 / 2:00 / S2 MON 3/16 / 4:00 / S15 FRI 3/20 / 5:00 / DGC The formerly luxurious Hotel Nueva Isla of Old Havana is now in ruins; but it is home for people living on the fringes of society: Jorge, a retired public servant and two neighbors, Waldo and La Flaca. With almost no contact with the outside world, Jorge resembles a Don Quixote gone astray, forgotten by the world he once dearly loved. Day by day his health and body weaken like the walls of Hotel Nueva Isla. His only motivation to keep living is his certainty that in some place of the ruinous hotel, the former owners hid valuable objects before fleeing during the Cuban Revolution. This is remarkable filmmaking that captures the parallel between the decay of the human body and the stone, steel, and corporeal places in which they live.

C IN E GAY SH OWC AS E LGBTQ cinema is transcendent by nature, oftentimes forcing spectators to look beyond their own experiences and inviting them to engage, reconcile, and ultimately relate to issues initially outside of their understanding. By being provocative and confrontational, LGBTQ cinema exposes the universality of narratives that exist in films whose ultimate purpose is to unite us all. It is our pleasure to continue our annual tradition of bringing you the very best of LGBTQ Latino cinema.

The students vow to hold the the youthful teacher hostage until Raquel gets her old job back. Fascinated by their isolated lives and Juan Diego’s absolute loneliness, Sebastian starts to film their daily rituals. The improbable but intense friendship that arises is rudely disrupted, when Sebastian returns to the city, although promising to come back. Years later, he keeps his word and brings along his pregnant partner. However, Juan Diego is nowhere to be found; and Sebastian is determined to find his old friend. But what he discovers is truly shocking.
NAVAJAZO Dir. Ricardo Silva (Mexico, 75 min., 2014, Spanish w/ English subtitles, Documentary/ Drama) SAT 3/21 / 10:30 / S15 Ricardo Silva’s debut feature imagines Tijuana as the setting of an impending social apocalypse. While some of the characters are recognizable and relatable, others are depraved and reproachable. In the end, however, it becomes evident that each one of them is merely trying to survive in an increasingly hostile environment. By mixing fiction and documentary, the film challenges our notion of voyeurism, by presenting us with the raw “truth” of the human condition when faced with adversity. Prepare to be shocked and wowed, and remember, telling yourself “it’s only a movie” won’t help. Mature Audiences Only (Explicit Content). RELOCOS Y REPASADOS Dir. PRESSENTED BY: A PHOTOGRAPHER’S JOURNEY Dir. Raymond Telles; Yvan Iturriaga (USA, 60 min., 2014, English, Documentary) SAT 3/14 / 4:00 / DGC TUE 3/17 / 5:30 / DGC SAT 3/21 / 2:30 / S13 A Photographer’s Journey explores the life and work of Pedro E. Guerrero. Guerrero’s life story is extraordinary, and in many ways classically American. Born and raised in Mesa, Arizona, where he attended “Mexican Only” segregated schools, Guerrero went on to serve in the Second World War, and became a major interpreter of modernist architecture and sculpture of the 1940s, ‘50s and ‘60s. Guerrero’s photographs provide an insider’s look into three iconic American artists of the 20th century: Frank Lloyd Wright, Alexander Calder and Louise Nevelson. With his images, Guerrero reveals the artists’ personalities and their creative process. A Photographer’s Journey is as much a portrait of the photographer as it is a panorama of the times, places and people Guerrero encountered, in a career that spanned more than 70 years.
THE HAND THAT FEEDS Dir. Rachel Lears & Robin Blotnick (USA, 85 min., 2014, English; Spanish w/ English subtitles, Documentary) SAT 3/14 / 8:30 / DGC WED 3/18 / 5:00 / S12 FRI 3/20 / 5:00 / S12 You’ve seen the headlines; you may have seen the picket lines; but you may not have had a chance to understand the plight of the modern day food service worker. So a humble, very shy sandwich maker named Mahoma Lopez, begins his tale. It’s a tale about an undocumented employee uniting his coworkers to fight against the abusive conditions at a popular New York restaurant chain. This epic power struggle turns a single city block into a battlefield in America’s new wage wars, and becomes the microcosm of an even greater issue.
BEAUTIFUL SIN Dir. Gabriela Quiros (Costa Rica/USA, 55 min., 2014, English; Spanish w/ English subtitles, Documentary) FRI 3/13 / 6:30 / S12 FRI 3/20 / 9:00 / DGC What if you desperately wanted a baby, but your country and religion prohibited you from trying the one medical treatment that could help you conceive? Beautiful Sin tells the decade-long story of three couples struggling with infertility, who take the Costa Rican government before an international human rights court to demand the right to use In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). In a region rocked by battles over reproductive rights, the story told in Beautiful Sin is without a doubt the strangest. In the year 2000, anti-abortion activists, with the help of the Catholic Church and a U.S. political group won a legal case that banned IVF in Costa Rica, and gave the embryo legal rights. Beautiful Sin is a cautionary tale about what can happen when a religious ideology such as the “personhood of the embryo” becomes law.

K ATE D EL CA STI LLO Opportunities are always available, but it is hard to know how to spot them. Sometimes we can be too focused on one goal, one trajectory and we cannot see the various opportunities in front of us that could help us achieve greatness. An opportunity should not only help you achieve your goals but also take you to further heights. To truly achieve success, whatever that means to you, you must be open, in mind and in spirit to recognize the possibilities of every decision you make. This will make all the difference. For me, two moments really stand out. The first was to accept the role in the film American Visa. I was terrified to do a role so challenging, and so different from what I had done before. But I knew in my heart that I needed to do it, to take this amazing chance. I gave everything I had and more to the role, and I think I proved to myself and everyone else what I could really do. I then moved to Los Angeles, because I knew that even though I had this amazing career in Mexico and everything to lose by moving, I needed to go beyond my comfort zone to be a better actress, and to be a better me. In taking those chances, in recognizing those opportunities, I was able to be true to myself and to what I wanted out of my life. Artists will constantly be told how they should be handling their careers. And even more so, they will face what seems like unending rejection. But, if they really listen to themselves, notice those opportunities they will be able to figure out what they can give to the world. They can prepare themselves for the long journey ahead and known when to take advantage of those substantial opportunities. You can give everything you’ve got to yourself, to your craft. And you can rock the world.

T U CINE! TU CINE! FREE STUDENT OUTREACH SCREENINGS
PRESENTED BY:
FREE STUDENT SCREENINGS AT THE 22nd SAN DIEGO LATINO FILM FESTIVAL Cinema meets education! Middle School and High School students are invited to experience our variety of educational and entertaining films, during specifically curated morning screenings in celebration of the 22nd San Diego Latino Film Festival. This is a fabulous opportunity for students and educators to experience the virtues of international cinema, and to engage in discussion about key themes and social concerns. The goal is to encourage student dialogue about films that are both entertaining and educational; while also inspiring them to consider careers in filmmaking and digital media.
The screenings are geared towards middle school and high school students; and all selections are educational, entertaining and will encourage dialogue. Each event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. daily.
“With these screenings, we hope to inspire middle school and high school students to produce their own films and tell their own stories,” said Ethan van Thillo, Executive Director at the Media Arts Center San Diego, the organization that produces the festival. “Additionally, for many of these students, this might be the only opportunity to see such films as the acclaimed, The Hand That Feeds.”
MONDAY, MARCH 16th, 10:00AM - 12:00PM THE BOY AND THE WORLD (MIDDLE SCHOOL SCREENING) Dir. Alê Abreu (Brazil, 80 min., 2014, Portuguese w/ English subtitles) This wordless, sensuous, uniquely original animated film follows Cuca, a young Brazilian boy who ventures from his simple countryside home into a neon-infused, carnivalesque metropolis in search of his father. A voyage of increasing complexity and beauty, the animation in this vibrant film is a feast for the eyes and is nourishment for the soul. En Familia Showcase. A PHOTOGRAPHER'S JOURNEY (HIGH SCHOOL SCREENING) Dir. Raymond Telles; Yvan Iturriaga (U.S., 60 min., 2014, English) A Photographer’s Journey explores the life and work of Pedro E. Guerrero. Guerrero’s life story is extraordinary and in many ways classically American. Born and raised in Mesa, Arizona, where he attended “Mexican only” segregated schools, Guerrero went on to serve in the Second World War and became a major interpreter of modernist architecture and sculpture of the 1940s, 50s, and 60s. Guerrero’s photographs provide an insider’s look into three iconic American artists of the 20th century; Frank Lloyd Wright, Alexander Calder and Louise Nevelson. With his images, Guerrero reveals the artists’ personalities and their creative processes. A Photographer’s Journey is as much a portrait of the photographer as it is a panorama of the times, places, and people Guerrero encountered in a career that spanned more than 70 years. SAT 3/21 / 10:30 / S15
From producer Fernando Rovzar (Casa de Mi Padre) comes the story of Alfredo Ríos Galeana (Tenoch Huerta), Mexico’s public enemy number one during the 1980s. When he wasn’t sticking up banks, Alfredo spent his time singing charreadas wearing a Mexican wrestling mask. The film’s narrative seems too far-fetched to be factual; but ultimately proves that truth is indeed oftentimes stranger than fiction. Mexico Today Showcase.
Ricardo Silva’s debut feature imagines Tijuana as the setting of an impending social apocalypse. Prepare to be shocked and wowed, but remember, telling yourself “it’s only a movie” won’t help. Mature Audiences Only (Explicit Content). Locuras Maduras Showcase.

Co-Presented by the House of Puerto Rico. Dealing with the loss of a father and his mother’s emotional abandonment, a teenage boy becomes fixated on a dancer named Stella. When he finds out she is performing 79 miles away from his home in San Juan, he becomes determined to do whatever it takes for him to meet his idol.
In 1931, while Tod Browning was directing Bela Lugosi in his timeless film, another cast and crew would take over the sets at night to shoot their own version of the same film in Spanish language with Spanish-speaking actors. The cast and crew were mostly from Spanish-speaking countries, including Mexico, Spain, and different parts of Central and South America. The Mexican director Enrique Tovar Ávalos was uncredited in favor of his American co-director George Melford, who couldn't speak Spanish. Since it was filmed at night after Tod Browning wrapped his version for the day, the Spanish version's crew had access to dailies, which they were able to improve upon for their own version. This has led to many people concluding that the Spanish version is a more dynamic cinematic achievement than it's better-known counterpart. This film was thought lost until a print was found in the 1970s.

Antes de que Nos Olviden is a raw documentary about those who experienced this war, which still continues today. The voices of parents, siblings, wives, and children of the victims tell their personal stories of suffering. With the testimony of renowned sociologists, writers, artists like Demián Bichir, journalists and Mexican politicians including Vicente Fox, we seek to understand how the violence spread across the country in unimaginable directions, leaving no corner unaffected. What if you desperately wanted a baby, but your country and religion prohibited you from trying the one medical treatment that could help you conceive? Beautiful Sin tells the decade-long story of three couples struggling with infertility, who take the Costa Rican government before an international human rights court to demand the right to use In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). In a region rocked by battles over reproductive rights, the story told in Beautiful Sin is without a doubt the strangest. In the year 2000, anti-abortion activists, with the help of the Catholic Church and a U.S. political group won a legal case that banned IVF in Costa Rica, and gave the embryo legal rights. Beautiful Sin is a cautionary tale about what can happen when a religious ideology such as the "personhood of the embryo" becomes law. Latino Public Broadcasting Showcase.

SAT 3/14 / 2:00 / S2 MON 3/16 / 4:00 / S15 FRI 3/20 / 5:00 / DGC The formerly luxurious Hotel Nueva Isla of Old Havana is now in ruins; but it is home for people living on the fringes of society: Jorge, a retired public servant and two neighbors, Waldo and La Flaca. With almost no contact with the outside world, Jorge resembles a Don Quixote gone astray, forgotten by the world he once dearly loved. Day by day his health and body weaken like the walls of Hotel Nueva Isla. His only motivation to keep living is his certainty that in some place of the ruinous hotel, the former owners hid valuable objects before fleeing with the triumph of the Cuban Revolution. This is remarkable filmmaking that captures the parallel between the decay of the human body and the stone, steel, and corporeal places in which they live. Documania Showcase.
