L

imassol happens to be the second biggest city in Cyprus with a significant level of tourist attractions, being one of the leading educational, cultural, and business centres of the Island. The city is easily within reach of other towns, due to its accessible geographical location. A fast developing city with many impressive projects that spring up sporadically, Limassol has a reputation for its modern sky-high residential and commercial buildings and serves as a business hub for foreign companies. Hence, many foreigners are attracted to the city

8

for their business interests and leisure activities and reside there as well. Some of the buildings in the city have received international awards for their unique appeal, innovation and ambience. During the last couple of years, Limassol witnessed a surge in international tourism and as such, gaining the trust and confidence of foreigners as a multinational base. A FABLE D ISLAN D

Exploring the History of Cyprus The ancient ruins, crumbling architecture, and the romantic old harbours of Cyprus are like an open storybook that narrates the stories of decades old voyages that washed up on the shores of this Mediterranean land that has an air of magic and enchantment. The sea around this island has been witness to many civilizations that took refuge here and country even paying benefits to them.

The

Republic of Cyprus is lo-

cated in Eastern Mediterranean. It is rich in history and its strategic position in the area made it vulnerable to invasions from different civilizations. The New Stone Age village in Khirokitia that dates back to 6800 BC has been preserved to show that this island was populated in the Neolithic era. Some of the oldest water wells in the world (9000 to 10,500 years old) are present here and the civilizations that captured this country include Greeks, Assyrians, Egyptians, Persians, Romans, Arabs, French, Venetians and Turks. Each invader followed the other, sometimes arriving in waves, like the Greeks did and sometimes for short periods, thus impacting the lifestyle and culture of the country. It became a British colony in 1878 and was annexed formally following the First World War. Cyprus has always been torn between the Turks and Greeks as they demanded that this island belongs in their area and consequently is a part of their state which resulted in civil wars between Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots. Cyprus was granted independence by Britain in 1960 but the dispute continued and a green line was drawn in 1974 between them. Officially Cyprus belongs to Greek Cypriot and now a part of Commonwealth and Eurozone.

The Advent of Civilization in Cyprus

The very first and oldest sign of human existence were found in Aetokremnos, on the South Coast, of hunters and gatherers who lived in settled communities in 8200 BC. As Bronze Age came to an end, the island experienced the arrival of two waves of Greek settlements that took over. The major Greek Gods/ Goddess and Kings namely Aphrodite, Adonis, Cinyras, Teucer, and Pygmalion are associated with this island and thus this place has an importance in Greek mythology and is very dear to the Greeks. From 780 BC onwards, Assyrians took over the land and later Egyptians gained the upper hand for a brief time period. Alexander The Great conquered it in 333 BC but after his death, Cyprus came under the Byzantine Empire. During this time period, Cyprus became enriched with Hellenic and Christian traditions and still holds on to them.

Independence from Colonization

The Muslim, Venetian and Ottoman Empire raided the country later and the Kings of England snatched it from the jaws of potential invaders. Nevertheless, Turk influence has never been fully banished from here. The Ottoman government established the millet system and abolished the feudal system. Under this, non-Muslims were governed by their own religious figures and authorities. Ottoman rule was oppressive and the economy of the country declined terribly. Britain exploited Cyprus as a colony, used its naval routes to control their other colonies, especially India. Meanwhile the fight between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, to declare the island as part of Greece or Turkey continued throughout. The United Nation made efforts to resolve the issue by dividing the areas between them with a ‘green line’ which becomes a neutral area. The continuous invasion and fights have had a drastic effect on the economy and overall well-being of the country. Tourism declined too, owing to the destruction of historical sites, which were restored later. Greek Orthodoxy is the main religion.

Mount Olympus is situated in the Troodos range, the famous mountain that is the birthplace of Greek Gods and Goddesses. Facts and Figures

Cyrus is the third largest island, smaller than Sicily and Sardinia. Two mountain ranges dominate the area; Troodos and Kyrenia. In the centre is situated the Mesaoria plain which holds the longest river, the Pedios river. Mount Olympus is situated in the Troodos range, the famous mountain that is the birthplace of Greek Gods and Goddesses. It is the biggest tourist attraction of Cyprus. The sub-tropical climate brings dry and warm summers that are spent on the beaches all over the island, amidst the presence of green turtles. Meadows full of wildflowers and vineyard cluttered valleys leading up to the rocky and rugged mountains full of pines, where people escape for hiking, trekking and water skiing. The culture and heritage of almost more than ten different civilizations come together with the Byzantine churches, Greek Orthodox Monasteries, Turkish mosques, Roman mosaics and Phoenician monuments. The ancient runes are a delightful sight. This country has progressed beyond bounds and is on its way to becoming a celebrated and developed island with its rich history, modern infrastructure and a booming economy, which will be soon thronged by tourists from all over the globe. ■

Seafood

The most traditional fish is çipura, baked in outdoor beehive ovens with special lemon souse. Popular seafood dishes include calamari, cuttlefish, red mullet (parpouni/barbun), sea bass (lavraki/ levrek), and Octopus is also favoured, but as grill or stifado (stew) with red wine, carrots, tomatoes, and onions.

Desserts

The go-to Cypriot dessert is soutzoukos, a chewy delight made from grape juice; Palouzes, a jelly made out of grape juice; Glyko, preserves of almond, date, apricot, cherry, quince or grapes; Loukoumades, very sweet, small, Cyprus style doughnuts with honey, Kadeifi, Baklava and Galaktoboureko, very rich, sweet cakes made with honey and a plate of mixed fresh fruit.

Coffee

Coffee in Cyprus is an intricate part of the island’s culture, and this makes it a unique experience when compared to other parts of Europe. Made from freshly ground Brazillian coffee beans grown on the island, the brew is strong and heady, boiled to form a frothy cream known as “kaimaki” on the top. Most locals drink it in tiny demitasse cups with dissolved sugar (“glikis”) or medium sweet (“metrios”); a brave few drink it unsweetened (“sketos”).

Alcohol

Traditionally, Brandy and Zivania are the most popular on the island, followed by beer. Ouzo and Raki are also imbibed frequently. A real treat, however, will be to try out Cyprus’ finest, the legendary Commandaria wine, a sweet dessert wine that is the pride of Cyprus and the world’s oldest wine still in production. ■

Larnaca Salt Lake and Sultan

A favourite site that is cluttered with pink flamingos, snoozing off with one leg tucked in. It’s a complex network of four salt lakes (3 of them interconnected) of different sizes to the west of the city of Larnaca. On the bank of one of the lakes lies the Hala Sultan Tekke, one of the holiest of shrines within Ottoman Islam. It houses the tomb of Umm Haram, Muhammad’s ‘wet-nurse’. Besides its picturesque beauty, the lake is the haunt of 85 species of waterbirds with estimated populations between 20,000–38,000.

the Larnaca Municipality, which also uses this beach for several events and as a market place, all year round. The beach is around half a kilometre long and has fine, grey sand, shallow waters which make perfect for small children. The sea is usually calm enough for youngsters to paddle and swim with adult supervision. Behind the beach lies the centre of Larnaca, so you can sunbathe in the morning, enjoy lunch at any of the many local restaurants, and do some shopping in the afternoon, all within easy walking distance of many of the popular beachfront hotels in Larnaca.

BE ACHES

As an island, the coast of Cyprus should be one long set of interconnected beaches. This is true from Ayia Napa to the Akamas along the southern coast, with numerous beaches, each better than the next. Some of the more popular beaches are listed below.

Recommended

Beaches in Cyprus 1

Nissi Beach is a prominent beach in the province of Ayia Napa, but belongs to Famagusta district. The beach stretches out 500 metres with crystal clear water, which is surprisingly shallow, reaching only waist height. The water sports best suited to this beach are windsurfing, pedal boating, water-skiing, paragliding, ringo rides and banana boats. In the Ayia Napa tradition, Nissi beach is a very popular attraction for the younger generation, and beach parties with music programmes run throughout summer. Weekends see beach and foam parties with loud music and famous DJ’s.

The magnificent sands of Konnos Bay appear out of nowhere as you exit the greenery of Cavo Greko, Ayia Napa. This bay, which is considered to be one of the most scenic beaches in Cyprus, is horseshoe shaped with fine golden sand for about 200 metres. It has perfect swimming conditions, especially for children, as there are no waves at all. Many different types of watersports can be found here as well. Whether you’re staring out at the dazzling view, lazing on the sand or enjoying a cool drink at the hillside café that looks out to sea, this stunner is unforgettable.

Mackenzie beach, just off Larnaca bay, is a kilometer-long flat beach, eminently suitable for families with children. This Blue Flag beach is usually calm, given its sheltered position, with its shelf dropping below waist height after some 50 metres. Water sports include jet skis, speed boats, water skiing and windsurfing. Diving is also possible at the Zenobia shipwreck. Bikini clad fashionistas sipping on mojitos and tapping their feet to house beats intermingle with a horde of muscular young men sipping on their frappes at the restaurants, including fish tavernas, in the area.

Dhekelia Beach:

The beach of Dhekelia, sometimes called Cessac Beach, is the longest sandy beach of Larnaca, fronting a huge collection of hotels. A variety of water sports, as well as beach volleyball provide the exercise factor. Dhekelia road has many shops, mini-markets, night time bars and clubs and a number restaurants provide international cuisine.

5

Coral Bay:

Coral Bay, 6 km north of Paphos, is a small bay with golden sand and rather shallow waters. It is a gorgeous familyfriendly choice. The shallow and gentle wavy water beckons kids, their parents and other adults can stretch out under a beach umbrella and anyone and everyone – teenagers, families and young couples — can create their space on the popular strip.

Paramali Beach (Main picture): Paramali

Beach, Limassol is a two-km beach, the southern half of which falls in the British Overseas Territory of Akrotiri. It offers sun and sand for the tan types to laze on, as well as scope for the active types who love to hit the waves. One of the few beaches where the winds pick up and the waves get rough, it lives up to its standing as one of the best kitesurfing beaches on the island. ■

What wine should you serve at your wedding? Whether you are a wine aficionado or a complete novice who feels intimidated at the thought of having to choose wine, the wine you have at your wedding will have quite a bit of importance. Here we have put together a brief guide in order to help you decide what wine should you serve at your wedding.

Pair the wine with your menu

As with the majority of events that serve food and wine together, it is recommended that you consider the menu when choosing wine for the wedding. However, while considering what type of food is being served, it is routine to still offer both red and white wine at all times. If you are unsure of what exact wines to choose, ask the advice of the chef catering the wedding who will be more than happy to recommend something suitable.

Choose something light

Light wines are better choices for wedding receptions over full bodied and heavy flavours. The wine should not overpower the taste of the canopies, nor the meal itself — instead it should be something refreshing that will let the flavours in the food served shine through.

Go wine tasting

A fun way that you can research wines to serve at your wedding is to go on a wine tasting. This can be done alone, as a couple, or as a group, which can be

enormous fun and a good way to involve certain friends and family members in the planning process. By doing an organised wine tasting you will be told about each wine, the history of it, and what it is best served with food wise. Most importantly, you will be able to taste lots of different wines and choose what you think is a good choice.

Try different brands of wine

Another way of familiarising yourself with various wines for your wedding, is each time you go out to a bar or restaurant, try something new and keep a note of the ones you like. This is something that can be done if you have a lot of time in the planning stage.

Consider your budget

A massive factor in choosing the wines for your wedding will obviously be the budget. Decide on your price range before seeking out a wine that you like, as this will help narrow your choices. It is said that you should allow half a bottle, to three-quarters of a bottle, of wine

T H E R O YA L A P O L L O N I A M A G A Z IN E • 2018 edition

per person, but this does depend on how many people you know are likely to be drinking it, and how much. A great way to save money when buying wine for your wedding is to buy in bulk, and many merchants will offer an option to return what isn’t used, so you can ensure that you have enough ‘just in case’. Choosing the best wine for your wedding can seem a daunting task at first, however, as we have demonstrated there are things you can do to familiarise yourself with what you might like the most. Alternatively, if you don’t feel confident, you can delegate the task of choosing the wine to someone else or ask the advice of the caterer. ■

St John’s Cathedral (Nicosia)

AYIOS IOANNIS CHURCH IS AN ORTHODOX CHURCH AND ONE OF THE OLDEST IN NICOSIA. THE BUILDING FORMERLY SERVED AS A MONASTERY BUT WAS LATER CHANGED TO A CHURCH IN THE 18TH CENTURY.

St John’s Cathedral has a breathtaking interior architectural design and was formerly an Orthodox Monastery before it was converted to a Cathedral in the 18th century. The outside structure is not as impressive as the interior which was well designed to leave a lasting impression.

St Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church (Limassol)

St Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church is the primary church for the Russianspeaking members of the community on the Island. Construction of the church complex covers an extensive project for the main church auditorium, the guesthouse for visitors, and a bell tower to alert members of the scheduled mass programs.

ST NICHOLAS RUSSIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH (LIMASSOL)

St Paul’s Cathedral (Nicosia)

The Cathedral is situated in the center of Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus and it attracts foreign members across the world, with diverse people from different backgrounds and orientation. The church has an accommodating approach and readily welcomes new residents in Nicosia into the fold regardless of their previous denominations.

Panagia Faneromeni Church (Nicosia)

The church was built in 1792 in Byzantine and Medieval Latin styles, and it’s situated in Faneromenis Square with several neoclassical buildings, including the marble Mausoleum and the Faneromenis Library. The church is dedicated to Virgin Mary, and it’s the largest church in Nicosia Capital. There are miracles of healing and divine intervention within the churches, and this further reaffirms the faith of the members especially in their devotion to Virgin Mary and the Saints of the church. A remarkable miracle in Cyprus is linked to St Marina who posed as a guest doctor and was allowed to participate in a surgery that saved the life of a little boy Andrea Vassiliou in Cyprus. The skull of John Chrysostom also birthed the miraculous healing of two members; a boy of 16 years old suffering from semi-paralysis and a woman who had a broken sustained from a car accident. Based on the above details, it comes as no surprise that Cypriots hold religious sites in high esteem and they typically believe in the doctrines of the church while being devoted to Virgin Mary and the saints. ■

N E W PROSPECT

DISCOVERY of NEW GAS RESERVES Sparks Hope for Cyprus

The discovery of new gas reserves in the Mediterranean Island Cyprus has opened up new prospects for the country with regards to the economy and trade of the island.

L

ocated in the Eastern

Mediterranean, Cyprus has been struggling to find new ways of improving the economy by opening up new and diverse employment methods along with trading with other countries. It is a new form of industry which is gaining attention and investment from all over the world and makes the country a prospective gas provider. Offshore gas reserves have been found which are estimated to be over 4trillion cubic feet, valued more than $50 billion. Companies like Qatar, Total, ExxonMobil and Eni acquired licenses to extract oil and gas from these areas on the southern coast of the island. This makes Cyprus a potential energy provider for Europe which would guarantee friendly ties

between them and less dependence on Russia for supplies. U.S and European diplomats have shown interest and have decided to get involved in this exciting prospect that would resolve problems. The President of Cyprus has been holding talks with the goal of making the country better and more united over energy issues. Israel and Egypt are the top most countries that benefit from oil and gas reserves from Cyprus. The energy crisis of Cyprus, Europe and of other countries that can benefit from the newfound reserves can be resolved faster and in a more efficient way if the matter is handled in a good way. Cyprus’ plans of maintaining peace after years of civil war will be boosted up due to this discovery. Employment opportunities will open up for the people of Cyprus and tourism will prevail along with trade with other countries. A period of economic stability

THE GAS RESERVES ARE A NEW DISCOVERY THAT WILL ENABLE CYPRUS TO INVITE STAKEHOLDERS FROM OTHER COUNTRIES TO BUY AND USE THE GAS RESERVES WHICH IS BOUND TO BRING AN ECONOMIC BOOST TO GUARANTEED PROFITABLE TRADE.

will greatly increase the future prospects of the country and will resolve underlying issues. More companies are flocking to the island to explore more of the land and unearth hidden treasures that could fulfil their demands. It has also opened new ways of renewing energy and using natural resources to create energy for the residents of Cyprus and for the companies which are profitable for both. Meetings have been held among Turkey, Israel, Cyprus and Greek Presidents to establish pipelines that would transport gas from Israel and Cyprus gas fields to other parts of the world by taking a path through Greece. Along with fulfilling Cyprus’ own domestic gas demand of years, these reserves will bring great profit for the people. The world has been facing an energy crisis and this new discovery will help Cyprus gain a better stand internationally. ■

ODD ONE OUT; Daring you to challenge the status quo NEW BOOK REVEALS THE IMPORTANCE OF GOING AGAINST THE SOCIAL NORMS

О

dd One Out is a new book by acclaimed author Paul Lambis that encourages its readers to escape all judgements and discrimination, and learn to value their own unique perspective. A humorous journey of one man’s attempt to find a new way of living that would carry him into thin and beyond, Odd One Out is an unashamed memoir of binges, setbacks, explosive outbursts and ultimate success. This fast-moving book also delves into different aspects of life as seen through separate stories involving a wide variety of individuals, many of whom are shown to be interlinked as their tales progress. Paul Lambis’ self-deprecating narrative is extremely sarcastic and utterly hilarious, and along with his epic lines of wisdom and snappy dialogue — creating high adventure and wild drama around the porous boundaries between fiction and real life, it makes for a laugh-out-loud book.

About the author

Paul Lambis is an awardwinning screenwriter, author, playwright and director, born in Johannesburg, South Africa. Educated at the Johannesburg Art Foundation, he is based in Cyprus and is the Marketing Manager and Creative Head of a renowned organisation. In 2008, after surviving a near-fatal car accident, Lambis put pen-to-paper and published his autobiography Where is Home? — A Journey of Hilarious Contrasts. His highlyacclaimed memoir inspired him further to write, produce and perform a one-man stand-up comedy based on the book. As an established playwright in Cyprus, Lambis has written, produced and directed theatrical productions such as 74 and Melina: The Last Greek Goddess to widespread critical acclaim. Other plays include Taj Mahal, Evagora, Volare, The Madness of Marilyn, Onassis: The Final Hour and Divorced, Beheaded, Died; Divorced, Beheaded, Survived.

AG RICU L TURAL TOURISM IN CYPRUS

HOLIDAY WITH A HINT of NATURE Agri-tourism, also known as ecotourism or ‘green’ tourism, is one of the ambitious and most popular trends in world tourism industry today.

O

ne might think

there is no need to explain reasons behind increasing popularity of this type of tourism because the answer is clear; the modern-day person, dwelling in the big city, gets exhausted from the constant rush, on-going stress, suffers from deteriorating health and other issues. But by coming to the countryside, he may let the worries go, forget about monotonously mundane tasks, take a deep breath of fresh, clean air and enjoy natural landscapes, which remedy the soul and relieve tiredness, filling the modern people back with an ability to enjoy the simplicity of life and rejoice in the small things. Besides that, agri-tourism is a perfect way to learn about local customs and traditions, witness authentic rural life and get close to nature. Cyprus, with its wonderful climate, crystal-clear seas and stunning beaches, was and still is the favourite destination for tourists. However, the focus on beaches and the sea has cast a shade on agri-tourism. Worth mentioning, though, that over a decade ago Cyprus Tourism Organisation made first steps towards

44

this direction. The Island has the established foundation needed to springboard her to a formidable success. Small farming holdings are almost extinct in many countries, giving way to agricultural holdings. Along with old farms, traditions and customs have been forgotten, which defined the culturally unique nature of each country. On the contrary to others, traditional rural communes of Cyprus are still alive in tiny villages. The government has been trying to support Cyprus Villages project launched back in 1987 and focused on conservation and restoration of authentic village builds. The project was developed in hope of agri-tourism acting as a propaganda of an ancient island with its stable rhythm of rural existence and traditions but will also attract the needed capital to rural agriculture. Unfortunately, the final aim of the project has never been achieved. But if truly feel the urge within towards isolated village life and ready to join ecotourists ranks for the time of your holiday, nothing shall stand on the way of your search for such resort corner on Cyprus. One of true pearls of this project is the cosy, endowed village of Pera Pedi, which is located in the eye of four main

touristic areas in the Troodos and Platres region; The Koumandaria, Pistillia, and Wine villages, and the top of the Troodos range. Crossed by the Krios river, which is a lifeline to the surrounding villages, and serene sight to tourists, the village is blessed with a gloriously clement weather and verdancy. The flourish of nature and fruit trees allows the village to be one of the prestigious wine-producing villages of the island. The homely village is also dotted and surrounded by a number of UNESCOrecognised sites of historical, cultural,

and religious significance such as Phini Pilavacion Museum, the Old church and monastery of the Holy Cross, the Troodos Natural Park and the great Olympus mountain which is found in the Troodos range. A lot of work has gone into revamping the village and making it a destination worth visiting, and the proof of its success is evident in the increase in population of the village, especially by foreigners who have decided to make the beautiful and peaceful village their home. English, Russians, and even Scandinavian families have fallen in love with the serenity of the village, and even elderly couples and pensioners are drawn to its charm. Being the intersection of many beautiful attractions, and a melting pot of diversity, Pera Pedi now has a growing entertainment and recreational value that will soon match any of Cyrus’ larger villages and cities, and the best part is that the village has the accommodation and hospitality to back up its growing attraction. Belief in family

Cyprus has enriched traditions and believes in the unity and power of family. For them, families are the heartbeat of its societies. They become the strength of each other in good and bad times. Here, families are quite large as you may say consists of twenty and thirty people on an average. It includes uncles, aunts, cousins, their children etc. They don’t have the concept of extended family. They have regular get-togethers, at each other’s home. One of the most interesting points is that they remain close to each other either in their relationships or physically. They are always ready to support and assist each other. Although if you have a small or nuclear family then family gatherings of Cyprus might seem a little bit frightening to you.

Food and traditions

Food always plays an important role in the tradition of a city; similarly, food is important in the culture of Cyprus. Every traditional event marks its impression on the living style and food of a country. Souvla is a wonderful event which is in actual a barbecue of Cypriot style. It is a perfect family gathering where large chunks of pig meat are cooked slowly on a rotational spin. It is mostly conducted on Sundays and holidays as on those days all family members can enjoy it together. Easter is also one such special occasion when various types of traditional foods are being prepared. A distinct variety of bread is made in Cyprus during the festival of Easter which is called flaouna. It is basically meant to break fasting during

One more festival which is related to food and is celebrated by Cypriots is called Green Monday. It is in actual a movable banquet which is conducted at the initiation of the seventh week just before the Easter Sunday. The celebration is marked by family coming together and relishing on great fasting foods like fish, vegetables, dips, bread and salads. Also on this occasion, a particular variety of bread known as Lagana is made.

the season. These pastries are made up with cheese, raisins, and seeds of sesame. They are made on the day of Good Friday and enjoyed on Easter. Christmas is also enjoyed by preparing a special delicacy which is cake named Vasilopita. There is one interesting fact related to this cake. While preparing this cake a coin is kept in the batter and after that cake is baked. It is said that the person that gets this coin while eating it, will be lucky as this coin brings good fortune. Apart from these wonderful dishes there also some of the traditional dishes that are made on different occasions round the year. Some of the dishes are Halloumi, Mousaka, Ouzo and Koupepia which in prepared by wrapping rice and meat in leaves of vine.

Weddings — a fun event

Greek weddings have always been wonderful and grandiose events; it is a long traditional function which takes place over a number of days. Weddings are huge; just think that if 1000 guests are invited to a wedding it is considered small. The function of wedding starts right from the morning however actual function takes place at around 4 pm in the evening. Best man prepares the groom while the maid of honor helps the bride in getting ready. A piece of red cloth

is tied around the midriff of groom and bride many times as it represents fertility. During the function of wedding groom and bride wears a special kind of headbands known as Stefana which is carried by Koumaros and Koumbara. The weddings rings which have to be worn by bride and groom are exchanged 3 times. The function of the wedding is trailed by a lavish reception.

Hospitality

The hospitality is in the tradition of Cypriots. Every visitor in Cyprus is wished well or welcome, with the greeting “Kalos Orisate” which means “welcome”. Every guest is treated like a royal person. Whether they are a family or in restaurants, Cypriots know the meaning of hospitality, it is ingrain. At restaurants, it is normal custom to be served with a delightful gulp of Zivania or Ouzo, which are the traditional spirits of Cyprus. Every visitor is encouraged to take a sip of the drinks offered, as they show a sign of respect and will greatly please the host. It might seem odd to some people, but Cypriots take hospitality very seriously. In a nutshell, the traditions of Cyprus are very much friendly to its guests. Their traditions have been affected by the various historical events and incidences of past which have left an imprinted mark on the culture and traditions of the country. Always remember that food is an integral part of their traditions and enjoy their hospitality. ■

CELE BRITY

PAOLA HADJILAMBRI Actress

is in her most creative phase… and it really shows!

P

aola Hadjilambri

born in Paphos is an actress and a graduate from the Drama School of the National Theatre of Greece. She also has a degree in Greek Literature and during the mornings you can find her at the International School of Paphos. She has a Master of Arts in International Relations and Diplomacy while she is on the third year of completing her Law Degree in Alexander College. We first got to know Paola during the Olympics of Athens in 2004. She is one of the 23 Olympic Priestesses that ignite the Olympic Flame and the only Cypriot ever in the history of the Olympics. She started her career at Sigma T.V and ANT1 T.V where she was presenting the 8 o’clock news. She returned to the theatrical stage as Hecuba in “Trojan Women” completing a tour in the United States of America and performing in 17 different states. We watched her excellent character Erato in the Cypriot sitcom of Sigma T.V “Galatea” while her latest one woman performance “Melina: The Last Greek Goddess” represents Cyprus on a European and International Level. Paola is a single mum with a 7year old son named Constantinos, to whom she devotes all of her free time while she writes daily on her personal blog My Beauty-Full World.

Paola going through your career there is only one word I could say…you are a restless spirit! Oh thank you! I really loved this phrase! Yes, I have to say that I have am so blessed. I mean having such a beautiful diversity in all the projects that came into my life it is something that I will be forever grateful. For sure my life is never dull and my daily schedule is always busy! I am happy that I had the opportunity thanks to late Andy Hadjicostis who gave me the chance to present the news and have a an amazing time being a journalist. When I felt that the specific cycle was completed I returned back to my acting on tv and theatre. Whatever I was chosen to be tested I did because I wanted to do it thus I knew that I not only had to be good but I had to be excellent in it! What do you think you gained from being on T.V and having such experiences? Many many beautiful moments, memories and huge respect towards everyone that lies behind the cameras and works so so hard so as to complete either the news broadcast or the episodes of a tv series. I was fortunate to work in both areas with people who not only gave me valuable knowledge but shared with me priceless life lessons that I follow until today. It was unbelievable sitting with the News Director and hearing this story and the other about old times, about wars and demonstrations that I only read in books. Going on set and finding a piece of chocolate cake saved for you from Mrs. Alkistis Pavlidou worrying that I did not have time to eat, made my heart melt. Thinking about it know just makes my eyes watery. We have been watching your social media posts lately and we realize that you must be in a very creative phase… Oh, I am glad that my posts on social media are worthy of your notice! I post things when I want to share my thoughts, my articles on my new blog www.mybeauty-fullworld.com or when I want to promote my work. Social media is a huge platform to promote your work for free and so much more. You have direct impact on a large audience worldwide and that makes it even more amazing! As for me…well yes I have to admit that I am in a very creative phase in my life without hiding that I have been through a lot lately! But with will and self-esteem i gave a lot of “fights“and I won! Now I choose to live my life based on my personal options and I am grateful that I have such a full daily schedule (like my son’s) because my work represents who I really am!

Melina: The Last Greek Goddess, written by Paul Lambis… I want to know everything! How did you two got to work together? Paul is my bestie, my family, my manager, my director and so much more… to give you an idea, every morning he calls me and I hear a loud “Stellaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa”and then I answer “Miltoooooooooooooooo”and we both laugh, as these are two of the main characters of a very famous Greek film by Michalis Kakogiannis that Melina Mercouri — my character — starred. Oh, we are both so crazy! We met 4 years ago through my makeup artist Ioanna Marineli and we were discussing Melina ever since. In the summer of 2017 I got a call from a previous director I worked with in New York to go back and present monologues of ancient tragedies. I explained how I was working with Paul on Melina and so we got the invitation of flying to New York where we actually had our premiere on 27th October. It was such an amazing experience! We had three full house shows and every night the audience gave us standing ovations! We felt so proud with Paul! That is why we are going back in November 2018, invited this time by the United Solo Drama Festival of New York. How is your son responding to all this? Constantinos is really happy and proud when mommy is acting! He has theatre culture and knows how to behave in the theatre. He did not like my black clothes and the fact that I cried on the tv series “Galatea”as I was a widow, so he preferred to watch cartoons at that time. He loves the theatre and he has watched Melina twice! Every time he has different questions about the play! What he always points out is that the gunshot that is heard in Melina is not real and that nobody really dies in theatre or in the movies! I think he is proud for his mommy! Besides his football training we also go together to kick boxing lessons and drama lessons as well! TV or Theatre? What do you enjoy most? I do not really mind because the choice I will do on either, I will make sure it will represent me. TV or Theatre…each one has its own magic and it also depends with what kind of director you will have the luck to work with. If you asked me about the genre in theatre I would definitely say “Ancient Greek Drama”. This summer I watched for the second time the amazing performance of The Theatrical Organization of Cyprus “Persians” (I also have an article about it on my blog). It is

T H E R O YA L A P O L L O N I A M A G A Z IN E • 2018 edition

such a well-orchestrated performance that I wished I were a man so as to be part of the chorus. I mean this kind of performances is what the audience and the actors are seeking in general! The ones that have hard work in them and quality above all. Do you have friends from the show business? Yes of course! There are always people in our lives that we begin a work collaboration and we click immediately and become good friends. I am lucky that I have good and supportive friends like the actress Elena Hileti, Jacob Hadjivasili and George Evagorou who are always supportive and genuine. Tell us about your future plans… As I mentioned it above, I am honored that the Melina show has been selected to perform off Brodaway in New York, for the United Solo Drama Festival on the 6th November 2018. At the same time there is another play that I have written and it is about the refugees that we will soon start working on while I continue to be the PR Manager of Aphrodite Aroma as well as the PR and Marketing Executive of the International School of Paphos, of the Boarding House and of the Theatre that will be ready in September 2019 under the umbrella of ISOP. (I told you I do have a very busy schedule). How about summer Vacations? We always visit a Greek island in the summer with my son and a European city in the winter. But I am also planning to spend a lot of time in Cyprus as a tourist in all the lovely places and hotels my country is offering! I really need to recharge my batteries as I have a very busy and creative new season in all aspects. ■

(TIMIOS STAVROS)
