There are many things to do to keep children busy, including excellent beaches, a variety of tourist options and many water parks and restaurants. Here are some suggestions which will make your children wanting to spend every holiday in Cyprus.

Aphrodite Water Park Paphos

With a variety of exciting attractions, this water park offers a fantastic day for the whole family. They offer everything from fast white knuckle rides to children’s pools and lazy rivers. And when its time to reenergize, you’ll find many places to drink or eat because the kids will definitely get hungry playing in the water. There are also lockers near the park entrance where all your personal belongings are stored so you don’t have to worry about carrying them around. Although the lockers are optional, it is up to you to pay a fee of five euros.

We love this trip because George is very informative and teaches children about Cyprus in an exciting and entertaining way. The tour begins in a prehistoric settlement so you can see how people lived during the ancient period. Then there’s a stop at an art college, but it’s not an art college either. In fact, the building was built from recycled materials. If you want to teach your children to be environmentally conscious, you can’t go wrong, because you’ll be surprised that the school was built with garbage. Now is the time to visit the monastery of Ayios Neophytos. After the steep ascent you can explore the cave and the monastery before resting for a cup of tea, which is very important. A swimsuit is essential for the next stop. In fact, the Adonis waterfall is the ideal place to cool off if you have spent an entire day in the sun. The Berengaria Hotel

he Berengaria hotel spreads stupendously across the Troodos Mountains with great scenery of Prodromos village and surroundings in Cyprus, but it’s now a shadow of its lost glory. You would get some insights relating to why the hotel was left to rot, and the reasons it’s a tourist attraction even with the stories and myths that besiege the building.

The hotel was established many years ago in 1931, and it played host to the high and mighty including royalties and other upper class individuals, by providing excellent entertainment services for the crème de ’la crème. However, the hotel was shut down in 1984 after 53 years of operation. Although the hotel stood the test of time for over five decades, its present state is a sorry sight to behold as the once grand edifice lies waste and depreciated due to environmental factors. Berengaria Hotel is a tourist attraction no doubt but quite unsafe especially for people who aren’t familiar with the terrain. Local residents are inquisitive to know more about the hotel that served several reputable guests and see things for themselves first-hand; tourists also wish to get a glimpse of the magnificent building.

The hotel has a reputation that precedes it as a haunted house and the myth has spread down family lines. Several stories about ghosts can be traced to the hotel all with a similar trait of the victims being killed there, and as such their ghosts lurk around the building seeking for vengeance. Interesting facts about Berengaria Hotel The hotel got its name in honor of Queen Berengaria of Navarre, wife of King Richard1 of England. With such a colorful history that attracted diverse people from all walks of life, it’s difficult to keep people away. The present owner of the hotel ‘Michalis Ioannides’, is worried about safety especially for children since he stated that some parts of the building are dangerous. Precautionary measures were put in place to forestall any unfortunate incidence but some visitors do not regard such warning signs. Do you wonder why a magnificent highly rated hotel came to a grinding halt? Well, it’s quite a mess. According to the story making the rounds, the owner of the Berengaria Hotel had three sons who inherited the property from their father. However, greed, and jealousy led to financial issues which tore them apart and it subsequently affected the business. None of the sons made good effort to ensure maintenance and proper management, so the hotel gradually went downhill. It’s not certain if the Berengaria hotel will rise again from its troubled past, but the locals in Prodromos village really miss the music from the dancing hall and other activities that made it a prestigious hotel in Cyprus. So, Berengaria Hotel is regarded as a tourist attraction by many due to its rich and conflicting history, and people desire to walk in the same halls and climb up the stairs where eminent royalties once stood. If you plan to visit the hotel, stick to the precautionary signs because some parts of the building are not safe to walk through particularly at night. You may get the services of a tour guide who is familiar with the building to assist you or better still don’t wander there alone without company.

LARNACA the sleeping beauty of Cyprus

One of the oldest cities in Cyprus, Larnaca is home to some of the greatest people in the world, and is also a very important economic city for the island, but it rarely gets the spotlight it deserves.

cala di Saline as the city is called on some of the oldest retrieved texts, the city of Larnaca is the capital of the district of Larnaca, and third largest city on the island of Cyprus, after Nicosia and Limassol. “The city of sarcophages” is also amongst the oldest on the island, built on the remains of what was once the kingdom of Kition, which goes as far back as the 13th century BC.

Athenian warrior, Cimon, is one of the heroes of Larnaca, and was one of the leaders of the resistance against Persian rule in 450 BC. The story goes that even on his deathbed during battle, Cimon will order that his subsequent death be hidden from both allies and foe alike, so as to not cede any advantage or create one. Cimon’s sculpture stands along the Finikoudes stretch, with the words “Even in death, he was victorious”. Cimon is not the only great name related to the city, the biggest is undoubtedly the father of Stoicism, Zeno. Zeno of Kition was born in 334 AD, and after his studies in Athens, will go ahead to change the world with stoicism. A wealthy merchant, Zeno would go ahead to write over 20 texts, on topics such as Philosophy, Logic, and Ethics. TODAY The Larnaca of today doesn’t have all of its illustrious history on show like Limassol and Paphos, being more of white collar city, but most of its population works in the tourism sector, with most the head offices of tour operators having their headquarters in the city. The city is also home to the only international airport of the Republic, and its seaport is key to the Republic’s economy.

ORIGINS After the kingdom came to life in the 13th century BC, the Achaeans will quickly inhabit the city, bringing along with them the influence of Greek culture. The Pheonicians will be the next to overrun the city, and make it the jewel of Pheonician culture, while making their wealth off the port. Before too long, the Persians, who were a great force at that time, will turn their eyes to the prospering city, conquering the Pheonicians and making Larnaca part of the Persian empire.

SOME FUN! Of course, Larnaca knows how to have fun (which Cypriot city doesn’t?). If you ever happen to be in the city, then you should definitely visit the Finikoudes stretch and beach. The stretch is lined with beautifully aligned palm trees, with the busts of the city’s two great names, Cimon and Zeno, standing proudly along the stretch. The Finikoudes Avenue and beach are also popular tourist spots in the city. Another interesting place to visit is the Church of St. Lazarus, which is said to house the remains of Lazarus, who was raised from the dead by Jesus. The old Kamares aqueduct, the Larnaca castle, and the ever-booming Marina are also must-see sites if you’re in the city and do have the time. · SUMMER 2019 EDITION

The multitude and joy of blended cultures reflects in almost every aspect of Cypriot life, and the food is one of these many influenced. We look at some the of the most standout delicacies from the delicious cuisine of the island.

Cypriot soups use a lot of ingredients that make other everyday meals, and sometimes use even the ones we’d usually consider unnecessary, but if beauty can come from the unexpected, so can delicious undeniably taste

Kopiaste Geia Meze!!! Meze eating is the closest any meal will ever come as a tradition, in similar way to what tea is to the Japanese.

Lountza is a pork tenderloins soaked in brine and marinated in red wine. After the marinade, the pork is then smoked and dried until it become hard and full of flavor Made from pork tenderloins, this is one of the “main” course dishes of Cyprus. The tenderloins are soaked in salted water, and then doused in red wine, before being smoked and dried repeatedly as the meat soaks up the spicing. The more it is dreid, the tastier it gets. Tsamarella. Cypriots have a knack for making almost everything a chewy, delectable snack, and goat meat is not different. Tsamarella is just that, salted goat meat, but with a taste. Zalatina is a gelatinous boiled pork dish. Traditionally cooked with a pig’s head

Trahanas Soup. This is one of the oldest fast foods in the world, and actually a well-known treat across the Mediterranean. The ingenious Cypriots found a very efficient and durable way of preserving milk, buy making granular curd of it during the summertime. This curd, together with cracked wheat, goat milk, yoghurt, and flour, are used to make this tasty treat that can easily become a staple after you try it. Avgolemono soup. Also known as, egg and lemon soup, this finger-licking goodness is made from chicken broth, eggs, and heavily scented with lemons. This soup has a nostalgic feel to it, as it is sure to remind you of home as a child when a warm bowl of broth would keep away the cold or as an adult when it’ll console you. Fasolada. Fasolada translates to “bean”. This is a Greek bean soup which comes prepared with dry white beans, olive oil, celery, carrots, tomatoes, parsley, onion, and bay leaf. Lima beans are sometimes substituted for white beans.

Meze dishes originated in Greece but is every bit a part of Cypriot culture and life as well, and turns heads when you mention it wherever it has a reputation. Meze eating can sometimes go as many as 13 courses, with different dishes served in mini bowls every time, from potatoes dipped in lemon and oil, to mixed salads, to roasted peppers, grilled halloumi, tahini, and loukanika. Meze is eaten at home or in tavernas, with every tavern having its own menu. We bet you’ll be tempted to try all 30 dishes.

Horiatiki. This is the “go-to” salad for Cypriots, and is just perfect for any and every type of gathering. A light, refreshing salad that is full of proteins, it is made with vegetables, olives, onions, cucumbers, tomatoes, and peppers, rolled in olive oil. Cypriot grain salad. Sometimes food looks so good you just feel better looking at it than having a bite. The rich texture and colourful look of the Cypriot grain salad. It is made with pumpkin seeds, silvered almonds, toasted pine nuts, and a few other ingredients that are only accessories to the tasty goodness.

Kleftiko. Made with steeped lamb, Kleftiko, is full of flavor, and has a refreshing feel to it, thanks to the lemon and cinnamon added to the meat. It has to be cooked for atleast 24 hours. Stifado. Stifado is usually made with one of either beef or rabbit, stewed in spices, vinegar, wine, and onons. Taste and flavor, on point. Moussaka. Moussaka is the Mediterranean equivalent of casserole, and is made with lamb, and eggplant, that is baked, and garnished with delicious béchamel sauce, that is made from flour cooked in milk, and butter. Sheftalia. This is a kebabstyled meal, that uses omentum from pigs or lamb. The ingredients are rolled in the omntum and then grilled like a kebab. Seafood. Seafood is also a very important part of Cypriot, and Mediterranean cuisine as a whole.Whether as compliments, or main dishes, delicacies made from marine dwellers as a special “gout” to it. You would easily find fried squid, octopus, cuttlefish dishes, and even calamari.

Nothing is ever left to artificials and inorganic, when it comes to Cypriot cuisine, even down to the desert and sweets. It’s not for nothing the Mediterranean has one of the higher life expectancies. Everything about their cuisine is natural and home made with ingredients that can easily be identified. As such, deserts such as Baklava, ravani, Lokoum, are all made with easily accessible ingredients such as sugar, figs, honey, bergamot, watermelon, and more.

Triantafyllo. It is made from the extract of the Cyprus rose. Once extracted it become a thick pink concentrate, add milk or water and the drink becomes refreshing as it is sweet. Coffee is often made strong and has it’s own characteristics that mirror the island’s diverse history. When served, the locals will accompany coffee with demitasse cups filled with dissolved sugar, known as Glyko or medium sweet (“metrio”); only a select few will brave unsweetened (“sketo”). Iced drinks in Cyprus mainly consist of Frappe. Much like the coffee Cypriots enjoy their Frappes with sugar (Glyko, metrio, or Sketo) but it can also be served with milk. All milk (Olo Gala), Miso, miso (half milk, half water), or Mavro (all water). Brandy and zivania are, without question, the most popular drinks on the island. Beer is also a favourite among Cypriots. Zivania is made with pomace, the residue of grapes when pressed for wine making.

How it all began

The Birth of Aphrodite

it is in a battle between father and son, that the island will know one of its greatest moments in mythology, the birth of the greek goddess of beauty, Aphrodite. Locked in a battle of immortals, Kronus, the son, and uranus, his father, will go against each other for what seemed ages, until Kronus having a moments advantage, severed the testicles of his father. the fallen organ will give rise to the goddess Aphrodite atop the Petra tou romiou, which stands today in the waters of Paphos.

Tombs of the Kings

Even the dead have an irresistible appeal in Paphos. the tombs of Kings in the majestic necropolis made entirely of stone, with rich frescoe walls, and columns that are reminiscent of ancient greece. some of the tombs even have large living quarters carved into the rocks, a very puzzling and perhaps lost form of architecture that showed all the brilliance and resourcefulness of man. the tombs are the burial sites of some the greatest names in the history of Paphos and the island. the name “king” is simply in honour of the grandeur of the place, and very well deserved.

The Paphos Archaeological Park

Another one of Paphos’ World Heritage sites, the archaeological park is still under excavation and discovery to this very day. Dating as far back as the intriguing middle Ages, the archaeological park is an impeccable balance between great size, beauty, and man genius, that simply takes your breath away. some of its most impressive sites include, the four roman villas, which each represent a god; the Houses of Aion, Dionysos, theseus, and orpheus. Любители блюд из домашней птицы могут заказать Авголемоно - классический суп из нежного цыпленка с рисовой пастой орза. Хориатики – в переводе на русский «сельский», или «крестьянский», салат. Это квинтэссенция средиземноморской диеты, которая, как известно, укрепляет сердечнососудистую систему. В его состав входят томаты, огурцы, сладкий перец, богатый протеинами сыр фета, а также оливки и оливковое масло – основной источник растительных жиров в рационе киприотов. Кипрский зерновой салат, изобилующий самыми разнообразными экзотическими ингредиентами: очищенными зернышками граната, крупой фрике и сушеными ягодами. Иногда также добавляют киноа. Картофельные салаты также чрезвычайно популярны у киприотов. Их подают с жареной на гриле рыбой или, мясом, а иногда и в составе различных закусок. Лимонный сок, оливковое масло первого отжима, различные приправы, оливки, каперсы, листочки кинзы и мелко нарубленный лук помогут заиграть новыми яркими красками любому блюду.

Сувла – большие куски свинины, ягненка или курицы жарятся на длинном вертеле. Иногда на шампур нанизывают курицу целиком и кладут на угольный гриль. Блюдо щедро приправляется орегано, лимоном и солью. Традиционный гарнир – пита. Сувлаки – эта та же сувла, но ее кусочки куда меньших размеров. На выбор предлагаются зарумянившийся на гриле хлеб либо другой гарнир, а также соусы. Подают также и жареный картофель. Для туристов сувлаки могут приготовить из нежнейшего ягненка, говядины, цыпленка, а иногда даже и обитателей морских глубин (особенно меч-рыбы). Шефталия – традиционная кипрская колбаска-кебаб без оболочки, но в жировой сетке, которая добывается из сальника вокруг желудка свиньи или ягненка. Киприоты предпочитают оборачивать колбаски, а не готовить традиционный кебаб.

Кофе Клефтико – традиционное блюдо из ягнятины, томленное в глиняной печи на протяжении не менее 24 часов. Предварительно его маринуют в смеси лимонного сока и корицы. Стифадо – классическое ароматное рагу из крольчатины (иногда – говядины), которое пропитывается вином, уксусом, насыщается ароматами лука и популярных греческих специй – чеснока и орегано. Мусака - обожаемая многими запеканка с прослойками из баклажана и ягнятины, политая к тому же сверху соусом бешамель (белый соус, который готовят кипячением масла и муки в молоке). Луканика – маринованная в красном вине и приправленная корицей и перцем свиная колбаса. Емиста – фаршированные перцы, томаты, лук, цукини или их соцветия, а также баклажаны.

Морепродукты Наиболее распространен-ным по сравнению с остальными видом рыб является дорада. Ее запекают в установленных на свежем воздухе специальных сводчатых печах, поливая при этом особым лимонным соусом. К популярным блюдам из морепродуктов следует отнести кальмаров, каракатицу, красную кефаль (барабульку/султанку), сибаса (лаврака). Многим также нравится осьминог, но приготовленный исключительно на гриле или способом стифадо (тушением) – с красным вином, морковкой, помидорами и луком.

Кофе стал неотъемлемой частью островной культуры и кардинально отличается от того, который подают в странах континентальной Европы. Традиционный кофе по-кипрски очень крепок. Он готовится из бразильских кофейных зерен мелкого помола (в небольшой джезве, которую называют мбрикия). Напиток варят до образования на поверхности кремообразной пенки – каймаки. Большинство местных жителей пьют его с сахарным сиропом в крошечных чашках (гликис) или в больших, c однoй ложечкoй сахара (метриос); но храбрецы пьют его, не подслащивая (скетос). Кофе по-кипрски принято подавать со стаканом воды.

урион (Куриум), 18 км от Лимассола Курион (лат. Curium) – античный город на юго-западном побережье Кипра. Долина реки Курис вокруг него была заселена еще в эпоху керамического неолита (4500 – 3800 гг. до н.э.). Такой она остается и по сегодняшний день. Акрополь Куриона находится на расстоянии 1,3 км на юго-запад от деревни Эпископи и 18 км на запад от Лимассола. Историческая застройка расположена на известняковом утесе, возвышающемся на 100 м над заливом Эпископи. Археологический парк «Курион» расположен в границах суверенной заморской территории Великой Британии Акротирия и Декелия, но управляется Департаментом по вопросам древностей Республики Кипр. Курион входит в список объектов Всемирного наследия ЮНЕСКО. Утес Курион, на котором был построен акрополь античного полиса - городагосударства, занимает доминирующее положение на побережье. ЗАМОК КОЛОССИ Замок Колосси - бывшая крепость крестоносцев на юго-западном краю деревни Колосси, в 14 км на запад от Лимассола. Когда правитель острова Исаак Комнин отказался помогать крестоносцам, Ричард Львиное Сердце захватил замки святых Иллариона, Буффавенто и Кантара, а его кузен Ги де Лузиньян захватил Киренийский замок и самого Исаака Комнина. Англичане продали замки франкам в 1191 году. В Средние века он имел огромное стратегическое значение. На его территории находился крупнейший по тем временам сахарный завод , сырьем для которого служил сахарный тростник, который выращивался здесь же. Отель был построен много лет тому назад, в 1931 году. Здесь останавливались известные личности и титулованные лица: члены королевских семей и другие представители высшего сословия.
