Cyprus is a country with over 15 millenia of history, a complex intermingling of the prehistoric, the pagan, the newly cultured and the religious. Nicosia: Nicosia, the capital city
of the Republic of Cyprus, is the only capital city in the world that is physically divided into two ethnic zones. The eastwest division is marked by a 180-km long ‘Green Line’ of varied width and the UN has deployed a peace keeping force there.
Larnaca: Larnaca, the third-largest city in the country after Nicosia and Limassol, lies on the southern coast of Cyprus. It hosts the country's primary airport, Larnaca International. It also has a seaport (passenger & cargo) and a marina.
Limassol: Limassol is the second
largest city in Cyprus and has its largest and busiest port. It is the biggest industrial and trade centre of Cyprus and the base for many of the island's wine companies.
Paphos: Paphos, a coastal city in
Southwest Cyprus, hosts the country’s

second international airport. Its charm lies elsewhere−Petra tou Romiou, an unusual formation of huge rocks off the southwest coast in Paphos district, is the mythical birthplace of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty. There are several versions of her birth, from the incredulous to the serene.
The Tombs of the Kings: The
Tombs of the Kings is a large necropolis just outside Northeastern Paphos, which name is not connected with the burial of kings, but with the impressive character of its burial monuments that entomb aristocrats and high-ranked officials.
Baths of Aphrodite: The ‘Baths
of Aphrodite’ is located close to the tip of the Akamas peninsula. A natural pool grotto surrounded in greenery is said to be where the Goddess of Love used to bathe in a pond just before marrying Hephaestus, the maker of the weapons for the Gods. Another version says she
was married to Ares, the God of War. Mythology links Aphrodite sexually with handsome Adonis, a mortal, condemned to die for his indiscretion. Of the myriad myths, Cypriots prefer the simple version that Adonis fell in love with Aphrodite at the grotto, reciprocated even though she knew that the mortal Adonis would be consigned to a tragic death.
Paphos Archaeological Park:
Paphos Archaeological Park or Nea Pafos is situated on the Southwest coast of the island. Systematic excavations at Nea Pafos began in 1962, revealing important monuments like the Houses of Dionysus, the God of Wine; Orpheus, the legendary musician; Theseus, mythical king of Athens; Aion, the God of Time; The Agora, or Court; The Theatre; The Basilica of Chrysopolitissa, the Lady of the Golden City, and more. ■ ■

HISTORY
History of Cyprus The history of Cyprus is a fascinating collage of customs, traditions and rituals imbibed from the culture of past inhabitants of the island, going back over fifteen thousand years. Vestiges of each culture indeed remain, absorbed into the mores of succeeding occupants, which transmogrify in keeping with the times.
The Republic of Cyprus is a member of the Commonwealth since 1961 and a founding member of the Non-Aligned Movement national law, except for the British Territories of Akrotiri and Dhekelia, about 2.8% of the territory and the Sovereign Base Areas.
Cyprus is situated in the north-eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea, 33° East by 35° North, 75 km south of Turkey, 105 km west of Syria and Lebanon, 380 km north of Egypt and 380 km east of Rhodes Island, Greece. All these countries were war-faring in nature, and Cyprus lay within their compass. Archaeological evidence reveals that the Mycenaean-Achaean Greeks were the first settlers, between the 13th and 11th century B.C. Those were times of myths and folklore and Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, beauty and sensuality,

is perpetually cited as being a Cypriot at heart, also known as Cypris. Aphrodite is considered the patron of the island and has a prominent role in tourism in Cyprus. Phoenician invaders arrived and settled in Cyprus in mid-9th century B.C., followed by the Assyrians, the Egyptians, the Persians, the Greeks and the Romans, who ruled Cyprus between 30 BC and 330 AD, in which period Christianity came to Cyprus. Greek culture prevailed throughout the following centuries, even though Cyprus was ruled by successive foreign powers – the English, the Franks, Venetians, Ottomans and the British (1878-1960). Cyprus became an independent Republic on 16 August 1960. Cyprus is a major tourist destination in the Mediterranean, with an advanced, high-income economy and a very high Human Development Index. The Cyprus Republic has sovereignty over the island of Cyprus and its territorial sea and exclusive economic area, according to inter-
Cyprus stands to benefit from EU membership, with a lot to reciprocate: its strategic geographic location, its healthy economy, the acceptance of the EU ideals that permit Cyprus to add to the stability and welfare of the EU family. Despite the division of the island with grievous consequences for the entire population regardless of ethnic origin, Cyprus is fully set to move ahead for the benefit of all Cypriots and the European family. ■

The unique location of Cyprus on the physical map of the globe is its most invaluable asset, but it is this very same asset that beguiled visitors en passant over centuries into becoming predators of the future, occupying the country by force till expelled by another invader, rendering its historical significance disproportionate to its size.
On 1 May 2004, the Republic of Cyprus became a full member of the European Union. Accession to the EU was a simple choice for Cyprus, mandated by its culture, history, character and its compliance with the basics of democracy, freedom and integrity. It joined the Eurozone on 1 January 2008.

Limassol Cyprus is divided into six main districts, including major cities with their suburbs. The culture, folklore, evolution and ethos of the Cypriots can be captured by an appraisal of four typical cities, Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos and Ayia Napa.

Limassol (Lemesos) is a modern city on the southern coast of Cyprus, its district capital and the southernmost city of Europe. It is the second largest urban area in Cyprus, with an urban population of almost 180,000 (2011). Limassol Port, the largest port in Cyprus, is one of the most active in the Mediterranean. Famous for its unique cultural traditions over at least four millennia, its skyline has left behind very little evidence of its historical past and given way instead to a modern, cosmopolitan look. It has also become one of the most important tourism, trade, and service-providing centres in the area. Limassol was built between two ancient cities, Amathus and Kourion. Limassol Castle, built circa 1000 AD, is a dominant landmark and tourist attraction. Used as a prison during Ottoman rule, it is now home to Limassol’s Medieval Museum, with a large adjacent marina. The Cyprus University of Technology is also in the city. A wide spectrum of activities and a number of museums and archaeological sites are available to the interested

visitor. Limassol thus attracts a wide range of tourists during summer; accommodation is not a problem, with an extensive array of hotels and apartments available. Limassol is the base for many of the island’s wine companies, serving the wine-growing regions on the southern slopes of the Troodos Mountains, the most famous being Commandaria. The wines and brandies of this region are of international award-winning quality and exported to Europe in large volumes, besides heavy local and foreign visitor consumption. Limassol is the biggest industrial centre of the province, with about 350 industrial units concerned with apparel, furniture, shoes, drinks, food, prints, metal industry, electric devices, plastic wares and more. It is the largest ship management service centre in Europe with more than 60 ship management companies making the most of its liberal shipping tax laws. Major landmarks are Limassol Castle, the Archaeological Museum, the Folk Art Museum and the Municipal Garden, which has a small zoo and an amphitheatre.
Historical sites are Kolossi Medieval Castle, the ruins of Amathus and Kourion, Agios Nikolaos ton Gaton Convent, the churches of Agia Christina & Agios Mamas; the monasteries of Agioi Anargyri & Agiou Geogiou Alamanou. Other activities include sunbathing on miles of sun kissed coastline and Blue Flag beaches, Water Sports including diving, snorkelling, surfing, water-skiing, catamaran trips and yachting in the blue waters of the Mediterranean. Shoppers can hunt for traditional, handmade handicrafts, jewellery, leather goods, etc. Cruises are also popular; in recent times, Limassol has become a major stop for cruise ships heading towards Greece, the Greek islands and other Mid-East countries. Tourists are increasingly booking a cruise from Limassol to visit the neighbouring countries of Greece and Turkey. Nightlife in Limassol reverberates until the early morning, with party goers and others who prefer chilling out with friends frequenting the Limassol tourist area, where there is a large number of pubs, bars and cafes playing various types of music. ■

European Contemporary Dance Festival: This annual Dance Festival takes over the Rialto Theatre in Limassol and the Pallas Theatre in Nicosia. Sixteen European countries unite for an extravaganza of contemporary dance, performances and inspiring workshops. In Limassol, the Rialto Theatre hosts performances and the Municipal Dance Centre hosts workshops.

Cyprus Russian Festival: This is the biggest event of its kind in Cyprus. About 12-15,000 people gather in June annually in the Limassol Municipal Gardens to celebrate the unique

relationship between Russia and Cyprus. Nearly 50,000 Russian-speakers reside in Cyprus and more than 800,000 tourists from CIS countries visit Cyprus every year and over 1,000 actors, dancers and singers from both countries perform on 3 stages in the non-stop cultural and entertainment programme.

annual festival Kataklysmos, the Cyprus Water Festival (Festival of the Flood) takes place fifty days after Orthodox Easter. Celebrated only in Cyprus and some Greek coastal villages, this festival marks the Pentecost. Honouring Noah and the Flood, celebrations are focussed on water. People sprinkle each other with sea water, a symbolic purification of body and soul. The 3-4 day event includes numerous contests. Sunset kicks off music and dancing until late into the night.

Shakespearean Nights: The Shakespeare festival is an annual charity event held at the ancient open air theatre of Kourion (Curium), 19 km from Limassol. Plays are staged in a fascinating old world amphitheatre. The performances attract large audiences from Cyprus and abroad. Travelling Stage: This is a multicultural program created by Pafos 2017 that takes place in different places in Paphos with ensembles from Greece, France and Spain and the Balkans. The Travelling Stage, which showcased numerous events in every square and space of the Open Air Factory in 2015 and early 2016, will continue into 2017, travelling within the city and the outskirts of Paphos region as a platform for cultural exchange and educational programs.

in Cyprus is festival season, with Cypriots celebrating festivals of culture, like music and performing arts. This annual festival provides outdoor, indoor concerts and a feast of entertainment including performances of dance, theatre and music, film screenings and poetry by national and international talents at various town venues throughout the festival days in July.

03-09 September Commandaria Wine Festival:
Commandaria is a sweet amber-coloured dessert wine made from Xynisteri and Mavro grapes, and is possibly the world’s oldest named wine still in production. It is honoured by an annual week-long wine event in a small area of 13 villages around Laneia village in the Troödos Mountains in the Limassol region. A traditional song and dance festival is livened by free Commandaria wine, with traditional treats, 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, and 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

The Akamas Peninsula is an area of soothing natural beauty in northwest Cyprus.

T
he area gets its name from Akamas, the son of Theseus, who landed there after the Trojan War and reportedly founded the lost city of Akamantis in that area. Akamas also lays claim to the place of birth of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, beauty, sensuality, sexual rapture and eternal youth, given that her baths are in the vicinity. The 230 sq km patch of exotic wilderness stands unaffected by the ravages of development. Akamas is blessed with interesting flora and fauna; over 600 species of flora can be found on Akamas alone, with 128 that exist only in Cyprus. Naturalists drool over 168 different kinds of birds, a score of serpents, a dozen different mammals and 16 types of butterflies. Lara bay, an important sanctuary and breeding ground for a vulnerable species of loggerhead turtle and the rarer endangered Green Turtle, is a popular tourist location. Lara Beach at Lara Bay is a sparsely used strip of sand. Monk seals also dwell in the sea caves around the peninsula. The best time to see Akamas is Spring, when many exotic flowers like beautiful tulips and rare orchids are in full bloom. 45 orchid species grow on the island including the rare Ophrys Kotschi. The enchanting cyclamen persicum is also found there. Picking flowers is prohibited. As for fauna, the Glaucopsyche Pafos butterfly is considered the emblem of the area. If visiting in the summer, do take plenty of drinking water along and try to catch the spectacular Mediterranean sunset. Surrounded by mountains, the Avakas Gorge is a popular area of the park, mainly for rock climbers. North of the park lie the Androlikou and Petratis Gorges, visible from Androlikou village. To its South, the Gorge has high sheer cliffs on both

sides reaching 260 feet, the narrowest point being 10 feet wide. They then join, leaving a tunnel through which a stream runs. The limestone-walled gorge is a haven for wildlife, especially in spring, with over 160 different species of birds, animals and plants. The trail through the gorge is roughly 2,5 kilometers long. Deep inside the gorge you will encounter rare plants and flowers, reptiles, immense cliffs and even wild mountain goats.

Akamas is one of only 22 areas in Europe where much of the habitat is local to the area. It has remained untouched despite previous bids to develop it and is now part of the EC’s Mediterranean protection program. Pine, juniper and maquis forests, gorges, cliffs, and sand dunes can all be found on Akamas. Nature trails in the area are open to walkers and cyclists to explore, the area being ideal for cycling due to its numerous forest roads. Only 4-wheel drive vehicles can tackle the paths in Akamas. The varied topography and micro-climates of Akamas contribute to the large biodiversity and sheer natural beauty of the area. Boat trips sail from Latchi around the peninsula, offering picturesque views and the opportunity to see shipwrecks just off the coast of Akamas. ■

No visit to Cyprus can be considered complete without undertaking a religious tour. From Neolithic villages to Roman ruins and medieval castles, the historic sites in Cyprus illustrate the sheer depth and diversity of the history of this island.
Religion
T
he number of religious sites on the island is legion, having come down from the pagan pre-Christ era to today through various empires and idiosyncratic emperors, each markedly different from the preceding era and giving way to the customs of the succeeding era. Most of them remain unusually well preserved!
Cyprus is a small country, but big in its stories of miracles, visitations, pogroms and visions. Cyprus played an integral part in early Christian History, although the events of the first 400 years are often overlooked. Few people know that Christianity reached Cyprus well before Barnabas and Saul arrived or that both Barnabas and Lazarus are buried on the island. Saul performed his first miracle and received his name Paul in Paphos. Cyprus was visited by the Theotokos, Virgin Mary, who stayed on as a guest of Jesus’ good friend Lazarus, the only man to have lived, died and be buried twice. Her presence was the fount of many stories of deliverance of people stricken with maladies. St. Helena, who had discovered the three crosses of that fateful Friday visited Cyprus by default after her ship was forced aground in a violent storm. She had with her the three Crosses, pieces of

which she donated in her visits. She also left behind a part of the blood-stained rope with which Jesus had been tied to the cross, the remains of which you can still find in Timios Stavros Church in Omodos. The rope wrapped around the miraculous Holy and Life-giving Cross. The monastery holds two more crosses, the Cross of the ‘Panaretos’ (the old Cross of Anogyra) and a small cross discovered in the cave over which the monastery is built. This Church is visited by devotees who pray for help in family issues, health and happiness. Kykkos Monastery: The Holy, Royal and Stavropegic Monastery of Kykkos, 20 km west of Pedoulas, Nicosia is the wealthiest and most active monastery in Cyprus. Dedicated to the Virgin of Kykkos, this monastery was founded a millennium ago in the Troödos Mountains. Besides the icon of the Virgin (Theotokos), reputedly painted by Luke the Evangelist, there are more than fifty valuable heirlooms in the church which houses numerous mosaics and frescoes depicting biblical events and miracles and votive offerings attesting to the Virgin’s miracles. People come to the miracle-working Mother of God seeking relief from serious illnesses, personal and family problems.

The magnificent sands of Konnos Bay appear out of nowhere as you exit the greenery of Cavo Greko, Ayia Napa. This bay, which is considered to be one of the most scenic beaches in Cyprus, is horseshoe shaped with fine golden sand for about 200 metres. It has perfect swimming conditions, especially for children, as there are no waves at all. Many different types of watersports can be found here as well. Whether you’re gazing out at the dazzling view, lazing on the sand or enjoying a cool drink at the hillside cafe that looks out to sea, this picturesque Blue Flag stunner is unforgettable.
Mackenzie beach, just off Larnaca bay, is a kilometre-long flat beach, eminently suitable for families with children. This Blue Flag beach is usually calm, given its sheltered position, with its shelf dropping below waist height after some 50 metres. Water sports include jet skis, speed boats, water skiing and windsurfing. Diving is also possible at the Zenobia shipwreck. Bikini clad fashionistas sipping on mojitos and tapping their feet to house beats intermingle with a horde of muscular young men sipping on their frappes at the restaurants, including fish tavernas, in the area.

Nissi Beach is a prominent beach in the province of Ayia Napa, but belongs to Famagusta district. The beach stretches out 500 metres with crystal clear water, which is surprisingly shallow, reaching only waist height. The water sports best suited to this beach are windsurfing, pedal boating, water-skiing, paragliding, ringo rides and banana boats. In the Ayia Napa tradition, Nissi beach is a very popular attraction for the younger generation, and beach parties with music programmes run throughout summer. Weekends see beach and foam parties with loud music and famous DJ’s.

beach of Ayios Ermogenis, also known as the Kourion beach, is located in the Erimi area of Limassol facing the 4th Century AD chapel of Ayios Ermogenis. It is a very large organised beach and with many cafeterias and restaurants. Sit and laze or enjoy your coffee or snacks while watching the magical blue landscape of the Medierranean, which, when merged with the blue sky at the horizon, creates a fabulous sight.

6 km north of Paphos, is a small bay with golden sand and rather shallow waters. It is a gorgeous family-friendly choice. The shallow and gentle wavy water beckons kids; their parents and other adults can stretch out under a beach umbrella and anyone and everyone –teenagers, families and young couples – can create their space on the popular strip.
Paramali Beach (Main picture), Limassol is a two-km beach, the southern half of which falls in the British Overseas Territory of Akrotiri. It offers sun and sand for the tan types to laze on, as well as scope for the active types who love to hit the waves. One of the few beaches where the winds pick up and the waves get rough, it lives up to its standing as one of the best kitesurfing beaches on the island. ■

The Greek Avgolemono Egg-Lemon Avgolemono Soup is somewhat similar, except Egg & Lemon Soup that in the Cypriot style, chicken broth is thickened with the orzo and kept overnight. Literally translated, avgolemono means egg-lemon. While there are many variations for Avgolemono soup with beef and fish as the base, the chicken version is most popular. Salads A village salad is the focal point of the Mediterranean Diet. It has vegetables, tomatoes, cucumber, peppers, onion, protein from the feta and olives and olive oil, which is the main fat used. All these Hellenic Republic’s ingredients make a delicious Cypriot Grain Salad salad and provide us with lots of vitamins and other necessary nutrients. The olive oil helps to lower cholesterol (LDL) and its antioxidant properties is a shield against heart attacks. In antiquity, olive oil was used to cure muscular pains and skin disceases. On the other hand tomatoes are also a good source of antioxidants and lycopene and the onion is a good source of flavinoids, which again helps to raise the good cholesterol (HDL) and prevent cardiovascular disease.

Beverages Cyprus coffee is unique and unlike coffee served in Europe. The mbrikia is heated till the coffee comes to a boil; it is decanted into small cups and Kourabiedes customarily offered with a glass of cold water. Alcoholic drinks served are Commandaria wine, sweet dessert wine made from grapes; Zivania spirit, a potent distillate of grapes; Ouzo produced by double distillation of selected dry wines, together with seeds of anise and Cyprus high quality light beer. ■

heep and goats, which deliver thick milk, were the only available sources of milk in Cyprus until the 1950s, when dairy cows were first imported by the British. Cows produce much more milk per head and this is thinner and cheaper than milk from sheep and goats. Today, cows produce 75% of all milk in Cyprus, some of which is also used to make Halloumi. Halloumi is very popular globally, and accounts for more than 95% of the Cyprus cheese industry’s exports. Traditional halloumi is white, has a semicircular shape, about the size of a large wallet, weighing 250± 20 g and is made from unpasteurised milk.
About 15,000 tonnes of sheep/goat milk and 35,000 tonnes of cow’s milk are used to make about 6,500 tonnes of Halloumi every year. It has a high melting point and so can easily be fried or grilled. Its mild salty flavour goes well with saganaki, salads, grills and barbeques and it retains its firm texture even when cooked. Foodies add it to salads or serve it with vegetables, with chopped mint sprigs for that unique flavour.

Anari is a cylindrical shaped unripe white cheese made mostly from the whey that drains off during the process of making halloumi cheese.

heating and culling process is used to skim small crumbly curds off the surface using a slotted spoon or a colander. Anari cheese is rich in protein and is often used fresh as a dessert along with Carob Syrup or honey and walnuts. Kefalotiri is a long matured cheese with a soft crumbly texture. Hard and salty, it is produced at the start of the new season, ensuring that the milk used in the cheese making process is taken after the lambs are weaned. It is produced from pasteurised sheep and goat milk. This cheese has a smooth, dry, yellowish rind and a cylindrical shape and its body shows eyeholes. Pafitiko is a ripened cheese very similar in colour and taste to Kefalotiri but its production is limited to the Paphos area, usually made by the farming families or local small cheese makers. Made from sheep and goat milk, the cheese has a pale straw yellow colour and a cylindrical shape but it is smaller in size than kefalotiri. ■
CYPRUS WINE TASTING
Cyprus is currently renowned for the various wines it produces, but few people know that Cyprus has been producing wine since at least 3000 BCE and may well have been the cradle of wine development in the entire Mediterranean basin and other countries of mainland Europe. The 60-year long devastation of vineyards in mainland Europe in the late 19th–early 20th century saw production and export of wines from Cyprus increase by leaps and bounds. Britain was consuming 13.6 million litres of Cyprus wines, half the island's production, mostly as sweet sherry. A trip to wine villages is fascinating, finding and getting to know regional wineries, while sampling wine in journeys along the ‘Wine Routes’ of Cyprus. Cyprus produces 37,500 tons of wine a year! Try the proven wine routes and taste wines from the traditional varieties of Mavro (for red and rosé wines) and the white grape Xynisteri, plus the globally unique Commandaria to well−known varieties, such as Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. Other regions invite you to sample the rare, more pungent, higher acidity varieties like Maratheftiko, Lefcada and Ofthalmo. Foreign varieties, like Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Carignan Noir, Mataro, Chardonnay, even Semillon are used for blending with Mavro or Xynisteri. Some of these clearly show their provenance, but if you drink Cyprus wine, you have the taste of Cyprus in your glass. ■

Lefkara lace is handmade from Irish Linen by local women, often seated in their doorways practising their trade. Intricately designed Lefkaritika is the main source of income for the skilful female weaver — the kentitria — and its male merchant — the kentitaris. Lefkara is a great summer spot given its low humidity and mild temperatures.
Omodos is 42 km from Limassol in the geographical zone of winemaking villages. The large plaza in front of the Monastery of the Holy Cross (Timios Stavros Monastery), the medieval winepress, the narrow alleys, and the stone-made houses lend a special aura to the village at an altitude of 810 m. Omodos is renowned for its superb grapes, tasty wines, zivania a strong alcoholic beverage and many Must-based delicacies like soutzoukos, palouze, etc. The Monastery houses a piece of the bloodstained Holy Rope, used to tie Jesus to the cross at Golgotha.

is a very old part of the Limassol district. The 1200 m high Platres has 250 permanent inhabitants, mostly occupied in the tourism industry. Kalidonia and Millomeris Waterfalls, located close to Platres, are among the highest running waterfalls in Cyprus, falling from 12 and 15 m respectively. The Platres Herb Festival takes place at this village annually, demonstrating the healthy properties of the abundant Cypriot herbs (674 different species).

The existing village was built in the early years of the British domination. They built storehouses for the beans, to facilitate its export. The large stonemade, locust-bean storehouses of that era, as well as the dock for loading the ships, still exist today. Paphos Paphos is a coastal city in southwest Cyprus and the capital of Paphos District. It lies on the Mediterranean coast, about 50 km west of Limassol. Paphos International Airport is the country’s second-largest airport. Paphos enjoys a subtropical-Mediterranean climate, with the mildest temperatures on the island and has been selected as a European Capital of Culture for 2017. The resort town has a charming fishing harbour at the fort, lined with open-air cafés and taverns that serve a tempting menu of seafood.

Paphos was the capital city of Cyprus under Alexander the Great’s successors in the Greco-Roman era. A busy, thriving port, it was the island’s first city for over seven centuries. Paphos, however, lost out as an administrative centre after the founding of Nicosia. The city and its port declined throughout the Middle Ages and Ottoman Rule, as Nicosia and coastal Larnaca gained in importance. The city and district continued to lose people through the ages and many of its inhabitants moved to Limassol, Nicosia or overseas and remained underdeveloped until 1974.

The 1970s saw European consolidation, which also filtered down to Cyprus. Paphos was the first area to be revitalised. History: Archaeologists believe that Upper Paphos was inhabited since the Neolithic period. It was a centre of the cult of Aphrodite and of pre-Hellenic fertility deities. Aphrodite’s mythical birthplace was on this island, where her temple was erected by the Myceneans in the 12th century BC.

Paphos is part of UNESCO’s World Cultural Heritage List, given its unique history. Its treasures include
the remarkably well preserved mosaics in the Houses of Dionysus, Theseus and Aion. The Church of St. Paul houses the Pillar to which St. Paul was allegedly tied and whipped on the orders of the Sorcerer Elymas, for which act Saul blinded him using the power of God. The ancient Odeon Theatre, the Byzantine and the Archaeological Museums are located here.
Baths of Aphrodite: 48 km north of Paphos lies an area of awesome beauty associated with the goddess Aphrodite. She used to bathe in the pool of the nearby natural grotto, shaded by a fig tree. An 8 km walkway from the Baths takes you through unspoilt nature to Fontana Amorosa at the tip of the Akamas Peninsula.
Tombs of the Kings: The site known
as the Tombs of the Kings, two km northwest of Paphos harbour, was the final resting place of about 100 Ptolemaic aristocrats who lived and died in the city between 3 BC and 3 AD. No monarchs are buried here. The tombs are impressive, carved out of solid rock, some featuring Doric pillars and frescoed walls. ■

восстановил заново храм Афродиты в Пафосе, пострадавший во время землетрясения в 15 году до н. э. Посередине храма Афродиты в Пафосе находился предмет конической формы, который изображен на монетах римских императоров. ОБИТЕЛИ ПРЕСВЯТОЙ БОГОРОДИЦЫ НА КИПРЕ
Монастырь Панагии Хрисороятиссы
В летописи этого монастыря лежит история чудотворной иконы Панагии Хрисороятиссы. Ее путь на Кипр был долгим.
По преданию, монахиня одного из монастырей провинции Исаврия (Малая Азия), чтобы спасти икону от уничтожения, попросила одну благочестивую женщину спрятать ее у себя дома. Когда иконоборцы стали искать и уничтожать святые иконы не только в монастырях, но и в домах прихожан, эта женщина взяла икону, отнесла ее к морю и пустила на милость волн, надеясь, что Бог не даст ей быть уничтоженной. Божественным промыслом течение принесло икону к побережью Кипра недалеко от Пафоса.
Но и на Кипре икона не могла находиться в безопасности. Поэтому рыбак, который нашел ее у берега, спрятал икону в горной пещере. Через 400 лет ее нашел отшельник Игнатий, живший поблизости от этого места. Однажды он заметил свет, льющийся из пещеры, и пошел посмотреть. Источая сияние, там стояла прекрасная икона Богородицы. Игнатий сначала отнес ее в свою келью у вершины горы Кремасти. Но ангел, явившийся ему во сне, указал другое место, где должна храниться икона. Этим местом была гора Рой.
Вскоре на склоне этой горы был основан монастырь Панагии Хрисороятиссы. Монастырь находится недалеко от известного монастыря Киккос, обе обители связаны между собой лесной дорогой.Современные постройки монастыря относят к 1770 году. Существует множество историй о происходивших в монастыре чудесах от иконы, найденной Игнатием.
Панагия Амасгу В 18 км от Лимассола, недалеко от деревни Монагри, находится монастырь Панагии Амасгу. Свое имя он получил в честь иконы Пресвятой Богородицы. «Амасгу» — греческое название Дамаска, города, из которого была привезена эта икона. Монастырь был основан примерно в XXII веках. Считается, что это произошло в те времена, когда на Кипре был расцвет монашества. Изначально монастырь

Панагии Амасгу был мужским, однако позже здесь расположилась женская обитель. В иконостасе главного храма монастыря хранится чудотворная икона Богородицы Амасгу, которая является двусторонней — на стороне, обращенной к алтарю, изображен Животворящий Крест Господень. На верху горы стоит монастырский скит в честь святого Иоанна Монагритского, настоятеля обители, павшего от рук турок. А немного поодаль, справа от дороги, ведущей в Троодос, на другой горке строится скит святых Сергия и Вакха. Нижний храм скита освящен в честь преподобного Сергия Радонежского, которого на Кипре тоже знают и почитают.

На Кипре особенно чтят Пресвятую Богородицу. Невозможно перечислить все ее иконы, которые почитают в обителях острова: Гликофилуса (Сладколобзающая), Елеуса (Милостивая, Милующая), Галактотрофуса (Млекопитательница), Одигитрия (Указующая Путь, Путеводительница), Елеймонитрия (Всепомощница), Македонитисса (Македонская), Теоскепасти (Укрытая Господом, Покрова), Галактуса (Кормилица), Яматики (Целительница), Евангелистрия (Благовещение Богородице), Хриселеуса (Златая Милость) и др. Важнейшие монастыри Кипра основаны благодаря чудесным обретениям икон Божьей Матери: Махерас, Киккос, Троодитисса, Трикуккя, Хрисорроятисса, Сфаланготисса, Амасгу и многие другие обители.
Монастырь Троодитисса В сложный для всего христианского мира ХII век, когда в Византии начался период иконоборчества, много праведных людей пытались уйти от преследования и переселялись на Кипр, привозя с собой святые иконы. Так попала на Кипр и икона Богоматери Троодитисса, названная так в честь места, в котором она хранилась на Кипре. После нашествия арабов оберегавший икону монах поселился для уединения в пещере высоко в горах, где прожил остаток жизни. После смерти монаха в пещеру стали приходить охотники и жители ближайших деревень, чтобы поддерживать огонь в лампаде у ико-
ны Пресвятой Богородицы. В 990 году рядом с пещерой построили маленькую часовню, а в 1250 году появился сам монастырь. Кроме главной святыни в монастыре хранится частица пояса Богородицы, помогающая от бесплодия венчанным парам. Монастырь Троодитисса находится высоко в горах — почти 1500 метров над уровнем моря. Современный свой вид монастырь приобрел в 1842 году. При входе в храм на мозаичной иконе Божией Матери Троодитисса изображены пояс и камень. А с камнем связана следующая история. У одной женщины долго не было детей, она поехала в этот монастырь, молилась перед иконой и дала обет: если родится мальчик, отдаст его в этот монастырь. У нее родился мальчик, и когда он подрос, мать решила выполнить свое обещание и отвезла его в монастырь. Но материнское
Махерас Монастырь Богоматери Махерас — один из самых значительных действующих православных монастырей на Кипре. Он был основан в последние годы XII столетия. Монастырь построен на высоте 870 метров над уровнем моря и окружен прекрасными лесами земель Махерас, по направлению к Никосии поблизости от деревни Лазания и горы Киония, которая так же известна, как гора Махерас.
сердце не выдержало разлуки с сыном, она приехала и забрала его. В тот момент, когда женщина уводила сына из монастыря, проходя мимо иконы, на подростка со стены стал падать камень. Икона как бы прикрыла собой мальчика, приняв удар на себя. Мать поняла, что произошло и вернула мальчика обратно в монастырь. А икона долгое время так и хранилась с куском камня, расщепленная, но потом ее отреставрировали. C тех пор Троодитисса изображается с поясом и камнем. Данное чудо указало людям на то, что Богородица тоже мать и может понять тоску материнского сердца. Камень этот хранится в алтаре.
Чудотворная икона Богоматери Махерас была доставлена на Кипр неизвестным отшельником тайно из Малой Азии во время правления иконоборцев между VII и IX вв. Этот неизвестный отшельник искал укрытия в горах Махерас, где и поселился. После его смерти, икона оставалась там вплоть до пришествия отшельников Неофита и Игнатия примерно в 1145 году. Божественное провидение открыло им вход в пещеру, скрытый за кустами. Согласно сказанию, по промыслу Божию у них в руках оказался нож, которым они срезали кусты, чтобы добыть икону. Таким образом, икона получила название «Махериотисса» («махери» — нож). Она известна под более распространенным названием — Богоматерь Махерас. Согласно надписи, сделанной на камне, монастырь Махерас был полностью уничтожен в 1530 году пожаром, и спасена была только икона Божьей Матери. Это происшествие положило начало великому пробелу в судьбе монастыря, последующие сведения о котором относятся к XVII веку. Главная святыня монастыря — чудотворная икона Божией Матери, от которой по сей день проистекает множество чудес и исцелений.

Киккос Это, пожалуй, самый известный и переполненный паломниками и туристами монастырь на Кипре. Основан он был ради чудотворной Киккской иконы Пресвятой Богородицы. По преданию, это одна из икон, написанных святым апостолом и евангелистом Лукой. История этого образа такова. Когдато в этих местах подвизался в молитвенном уединении благочестивый подвижник Исайя. Както раз один из вельмож, охотившийся в горах, заблудился и наткнулся на келью отшельника. Грубо пытаясь выяснить дорогу, он даже побил старца. В наказание за то, вельможа тяжело заболел. Уразумев наказание Божие, вернулся он к монаху Исайе просить прощения. Подвижник простил вельможу, но велел ему отправиться в Константинополь к императору Алексею Комнину и привезти на Кипр чудотворную икону Божией Матери, хранящуюся у него, сказав, что такова воля Самой Царицы Небесной. Но Император не хотел расставаться с чудотворным образом. И повелел написать точную копию иконы, решив отправить на Кипр список с нее. Тогда тяжело заболела дочь императора, и он понял, что Пресвятая Богородица сама выбрала Кипр местом пребывания Ее святого образа. Он согласился отдать икону, но с условием, чтобы лик Матери Божией на иконе всегда пребывал закрытым, дабы молящиеся имели большее благоговение. И по сей день икона почти полностью занавешена особым бархатным покровом, только нижняя часть иконы открыта. Образ поставили в часовне на вершине горы, а позже рядом был основан монастырь, куда и была перенесена икона. Киккский монастырь один из самых богатых на Кипре. Много даров сюда приносили и русские цари. За свою историю монастырь четырежды полностью сгорал, но икона оставалась целой и невредимой.

История основания этого монастыря окутано древними преданиями и легендами. Некоторые из них говорят о следующем: во время нашествия арабов на остров один монахотшельник, что жил здесь, настолько стремился уберечь от осквернения дорогую ему икону Пресвятой Богородицы, что был вынужден оставить ее в густой поросли. Она чудесным образом сохранилась. Позже вблизи чудотворной иконы начали происходить исцеления от укуса фаланги и других ядовитых насекомых — отсюда и взялось название этой иконы, а позже и основанной в честь нее обители. Под храмом, в котором сохранился иконостас XVIII века и установлена чудотворная икона, находится пещера, связанная с древней историей обители. Монастырь был возобновлен как женский в 1974 году по благословению архиепископа Макариоса III. В настоящее время в обители около 20 насельниц. В окрестностях монастыря паломникам показывают кустарник,
укрывший икону и чудотворный источник, помогающий от многих болезней. Икона Пресвятой Богородицы Сфалангиотисса почитается как чудотворная. Есть свидетельства исцелений от рака, бесплодия, сердечных, кожных, глазных и многих других заболеваний. Все православные христиане, искренне уповающие на помощь Пресвятой Богородицы, всегда получают от Нее помощь. Главное, всегда помнить, что икона — не амулет и сама собой не исцеляет, исцеляет Господь по молитвам Своей Матери, но и это не по волшебству, а по искренней вере. А вера без дел мертва, поэтому будем стараться вести благочестивую христианскую жизнь по заповедям Божиим, прибегать к Святым исцеляющим душу и тело Церковным Таинствам и уповать на то, что наши малые труды ради Бога принесут хотя бы небольшой плод. ■ Пресвятая Богородица, моли Бога о нас!

Russo-Cypriot Painter: Dmitry Lazarev Dmitry Lazarev, born in Rostov-on-Don, Russia, in 1974, exhibited a penchant for the Arts since his early days. It was, therefore, no real surprise that he joined the Rostov Architectural Academy for his post-graduation study, acquiring a Master’s in Architecture when passing out. By doing so, Dmitry became a worthy successor in keeping with his family’s artistic traditions. If ever familial tradition is passed to alternate generations, here was living proof. Dmitry is the grandson of the illustrious Georgiy Lazarev, a well-known persona of the City of Rostov-on-Don and an artist who was a laureate of the First Soviet-Union-Wide Festival of Working People’s Creative Activity. As might have been expected, it was his grandfather who was his first mentor and principal teacher in art as well as in life, giving him his fundamental knowledge in his early youth, progressing to the understanding of how acquisition of certain subsets of skills would underline its metonymic composition. With that grouping established, it was relatively simple to imbibe skills in various painting techniques, highlighting his diligence, love of nature and his ability to feel its beauty. While studying at the Architectural Academy, Dmitry’s painting «Autumn Landscape» won the first prize among Painting Works of Art and he was accorded a special award. Progressing from there, in the last two decades, Dmitry has painted more than 250 works of art. He has participated in the painting exhibition held in Rostov Museum of Local Lore in 1993 and illustrated several books devoted to the history of drawing and painting in the Province of Rostov-on-Don, expanding, as it were, his reach. His art has been showcased in various private collections in and outside Russia, for instance, in the Netherlands, France, USA, Greece and Cyprus. Dmitry had realised that his forte was painting landscapes, and he decided to make his strength his niche or primary genre. He prefers to create his landscapes working with and within nature. His range of expressions is necessarily very large: from classical landscapes of the Russian Midlands to the glacial cliffs of Dombay, Northern Caucasus; views of the famously quiet flowing River Don; architectural drafts and a large collection of landscapes in Cyprus, the Mediterranean island where

Cyprus has got to him and the main motif of Dmitry`s artworks today is traditional architecture with old villages, churches, coastal landscapes and mountains taking up a major share. He has held a few personal painting exhibitions in Limassol, Cyprus in the last few years and presented more than 100 works at each of them. He uses a wide variety of techniques and media to display his creativity: oil, water-colours, calligraphic ink and lead pencil. Dmitry is also a member of Creative Union of Professional Painters of Russia and represented Cyprus in one of the biggest International exhibitions in Moscow in February 2016. Какие возможности для долговременного пребывания на острове есть у нас — граждан третьих стран? В качестве наболее приемлемых вариантов юристы предлагают долговременный вид на жительство — «категорию F» — и категорию по Правилу 6(2). В чем разница и что общего между этими двумя статусами?

ЧТО ОБЩЕГО? Это статусы, разрешающие легальное проживание резидентов других стран на территории Республики Кипр. Так называемый долговременный вид на жительство, дающий право въезжать и выезжать из страны без необходимости оформлять въездные визы. Выдаются однократно с соответствующей отметкой в загранпаспорте. После окончания его действия необходимо просто переставить штамп в новый паспорт. Пока это только внутренние статусы страны, не позволяющие его обладателям путешествовать по другим странам ЕС. Но велика вероятность того, что с вступлением Кипра в Шенгенскую зону, обладатели данных статусов получат право на безвизовое передвижение по территориям стран ЕС и Шенгена, как это давно уже происходит в других европейских странах.

Несмотря на то, что обе эти категории не дают иностранцам права работать на территории Кипра, обладатели категории Правила 6(2) могут получать дивиденды от прибыли компаний, т. е. выступать акционерами зарегистрированных на территории Республики Кипр компаний. А обладатели категории F такого права лишены. Это единственное различие в правах, предоставляемых данными иммиграционными статусами.
НЮАНСЫ В ПРОЦЕССЕ ПОДАЧИ ДОКУМЕНТОВ При подаче заявления на получение категории по Правилу 6(2) срок его рассмотрения составит от 2 до 4 месяцев, а на получение категории F- от 8 до 12 месяцев. Пакет документов практически идентичен, но на получение категории по Правилу 6(2) стоимость приобретаемого объекта недвижимости должна составлять не менее 300 тысяч евро. Причем, это стоимость объекта без НДС. А также обязательно предоставление чеков об оплате большей части стоимости (не менее 200 тысяч евро) И, наконец, приобретение недвижимости должно происходить непосредственно у застройщика, т. е. это только предложения «первичного рынка». Купив же объект «вторичной» недвижимости любой стоимости, можно смело подавать документы на получение категории F.
Для претендующих на получение категории по Правилу 6(2) сумма трехлетнего заблокированного депозита в кипрском банке должна составлять не менее 30 тысяч евро. Для соискателей категории F этого не нужно. Причем, если ранее (буквально год назад) для подачи заявления на получение категории F необходимо было иметь на личном банковском счете около 100 тысяч евро, то сейчас этого уже не требуется. Достаточно иметь 30 тысяч евро, и при соблюдении других необходимых условий и предоставлении правильно оформленного полного пакета документов вы можете получить категорию F. В последнее время руководство Иммиграционного департамента Кипра относится к соискателям категории F очень лояльно, и многие заявления принимаются и одобряются даже с невысокими суммами на депозитных счетах. Безусловно, учитывается и то, что большей популярностью сейчас пользуются объекты недвижимости, предлагаемые на «вторичном рынке», т. к. цены на них в последнее время значительно снизились. Поэтому всем тем, кто хочет получить постоянный вид на жительство в Республике Кипр, но не готов вкладывать средства в дорогостоящую недвижимость от застройщика, я рекомендую подавать документы на получение категории F.
