/ history / Paphos boasts a variegated yet rich history. An Archeological Park has been listed as a UNESCO world heritage site since 1980.

Past & Present The city of Paphos, in southwest Cyprus, is a town fringed by deep blue water and immersed in sunshine for 300 days a year. Not surprisingly, it is a popular holiday destination for Europeans in search of relaxation. Besides being a hotspot for sun worshipers, Paphos boasts a rich history dating back to Neolithic times, with an Archeological Park that has been listed as a UNESCO world heritage site since 1980. In fact, it was in Paphos that the mythological Greek goddess of love and beauty, Aphrodite, rose from the sea. This brought about the cult of Aphrodite, who was worshipped, not only by the Cypriots, but by the whole of the Aegean region. The Greek-Roman era contributed to the wealth and prosperity of Paphos, and left it with an abundance of culturally rich historical artifacts. From Roman to Christian and Byzantine rule, Cyprus ultimately gained its independence on the 16th of August 1960. Today, the city is divided into ‘old’ and ‘new’ sections, each with its own individual characteristics. Ktima (Old or Upper Paphos) is where the Myceneans erected a temple in honour of Aphrodite in the 12th century BC. In 381 AD, the Christian Roman Emperor Theodosius banned all pagan religions

and the temple fell into ruins. Ktima is currently a relaxed residential area, where locals do business, and opulent colonial buildings house museums, government institutions and a few hotels. Kato (New or Lower Paphos) is the tourist hub, and the location of many archeological sites. Kato is flanked by the Mediterranean Sea and filled with ancient relics such as catacombs, fortresses, medieval baths and mosaics. There are also many hotels and restaurants in this harbour area, which are often flocked to by tourists. In this year, 2017, Paphos has gained the title of the European Capital of Culture. This initiative is designed to highlight, celebrate and foster development of diverse cultures within Europe. In honour of this distinguished position, a sculpture park has been created in Paphos, which includes a bronze statue of a female overlooking the site where Aphrodite lived. Many events will take place throughout 2017 which will celebrate the past and present of Paphos and its unique history and culture. • 2017/2018 EDITION

This magazine will be published in two versions: the first, Blue Edition, reserved for Cyprus, i.e., distribution in every room of the 15 Best Hotels in Cyprus; other well visited areas of our Island such as the Limassol Marina; sites that see affluent footfalls like Private clinics and Doctors’ offices; Lawyers, Architects and Developers and, of course, Banks and CYTA offices. European capital of Culture 2017

HE COASTAL CITY in the southwest of Cyprus comes with astounding beaches and buckets of historic charm. Old Paphos was the most famous and important place for worshipping Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty in the ancient world. Paphos is renowned for the remains of the Roman governor’s palace made of extensive fine mosaics. This city is included in the official UNESCO list of cultural and natural treasures of the world’s heritage. Among the treasures unearthed are the mosaics in the Houses of Dionysos, Theseus and Aion in Archaeological Park. Then there are the mysterious vaults and caves, the Tombs of the Kings, the pillar to which Saint Paul was allegedly tied and whipped. Other places of interest include the Byzantine Museum and the District Archaeological Museum, with its attractive collection of Cypriot antiquities from the Paphos area, dating from the Neolithic Age up to 1700 AD. Near the Odeon are the remains of the ancient city walls, the Roman Agora and a building dedicated to Asclepius, god of medicine. Paphos has already been a city of culture for more than two millennia. Set around one of the most dazzling harbours in the Mediterranean, Paphos has been crowned

the European Capital of Culture in January this year. In recognition of the title, a plethora of cultural events have been planned for the year, which will give visitors a pretty nice hook to reel in as erudite culture-seekers. The European Capital of Culture will see more than 300 dance, music, theatre, art, cinema and other events light up the city and its surrounding area under the motto ‘Linking continents, bridging cultures’. Kicking off on January 28, the events are designed to recall different phases of the city’s history around the themes of Myth & Religion, World Travellers and Stages of the Future. The opening ceremony for Paphos 2017, which is inspired by one of the themes for the year’s cultural programme ‘Myth and Religion’ aims to illustrate the history, multiculturalism and contemporary culture of Paphos as an integral part of the broader European civilisation. The opening ceremony will also include a spectacle of son et lumiére, while Greek singer Alkistis Protopsalti and other artists will have a central role in the ceremony. There will be dramatic summer spectaculars — with boats, fire shows, light projections and music — cinema screenings on the beach, guided city tours and a year-long string of art exhibitions including some works on display at Thanos Hotels.

Moon and Stars festival will begin in August, featuring open-air concerts in unusual spots such as Aphrodite’s Rock, an aerial acrobatics show at Paphos Castle, various gastronomy events, and a performance of the Greek comedy Lysistrata in the Archaeological Park. The myth of Pygmalion and Galatea and other narratives from the history of Paphos will gain a new life in a unique spectacle of music and dance. During the opening weekend on January 28–29, the city will be converted into an Open Air Factory with numerous shows and artistic performances. Paphos is set to become an immense open stage where a tradition of thousands of years of cultural life in open spaces meets contemporary ways of creating, thinking and living.

A great Historical city in Cyprus Paphos is a wonderful city located in the southwest coastal region of Cyprus. During ancient times two places were known as Paphos; Old Paphos and New Paphos. Currently, the inhabited location is New Paphos which is situated on the coast of Mediterranean. Paphos and its harbour have a rich historical as well as mythical background which has attracted the attention of archaeologists, historians along with tourists from all around the world. a distance of around 2 km to the west of Paphos harbour. These tombs are underground and many of them date back to the fourth century BC. They have been carved from solid rock and are considered to be the burial place of aristocrats and senior officials of Paphos till the 3rd century AD. The name has been derived from the grandeur of these tombs; in reality no king is buried there. This place has been deemed a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

LD PAPHOS has been famous since ancient times because of various myths and mysteries associated with Aphrodite. During the times of Greeks and Romans, Paphos was the capital of the island. The City of Paphos was given a place in the UNESCO official list of World Heritage Sites in 1980.

The local version differs, stating that when Uranus attempted to escape from Cronus, his testicles and parts of the lower body fell into the sea. White foam emerged and a maiden arose from within, to be later called Aphrodite. This myth adds that if someone swims around the Aphrodite rock three times, that person will be blessed with good luck, true love and beauty.

FOUNDING MYTH OF PAPHOS Paphos has always been surrounded by a large number of mysteries as well as mythical tales. In fact, the name of the city also has been associated with numerous myths. It is believed that the ivory sculpture of Aphrodite made by Pygmalion was brought into existence by the goddess as Galatea. Paphos was the son of Pygmalion and Galatea. According to historians, Cinyras, who was the son of Paphos, has founded the city under his name.

BATH OF APHRODITE Another mythical place in Paphos is Bath of Aphrodite which is situated in the Akamas Peninsula. As per legend, it is believed that Aphrodite used to bathe in the lovely cerulean pools of this magnificent grotto. This natural cave is surrounded and shaded by a huge fig tree and has varied and rich natural flora, fauna and wildlife. It is also believed that she met Adonis, her lover, for the first time at this place. These pools are associated with several myths. One amongst them is that if someone takes a bath in these pools, his fertility will be reinstated. However, no one is permitted to enter these natural pools now.

APHRODITE’S BIRTHPLACE This island has been associated with the birth of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, beauty and sexuality. Petra tou Romiou, which is also known as the Aphrodite Birthplace in mythology has been a major tourist attraction since ancient times. According to a legend, Gaia or Mother Earth inveigled her son Cronus

ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK The Archaeological Park of Kato Paphos (Paphos) is located near Paphos harbour. This park is still under excavation and is comprised of a large number of monuments as well as sites from the Middle Ages. Of the many remains, the most momentous are the House of Dionysos (God of Wine), the House of Orpheus, four Roman Villas, the House of Aion and the House of Theseus with its conserved mosaic floors. Besides these, various other archaeological excavations have uncovered the Fortress of Saranta Kolones, the Hellenistic — Roman Theatre as well as the Tombs of the Kings. PAPHOS HARBOUR CASTLE Paphos Harbor Castle is also located near the harbour, a Byzantine fort designed to provide protection to the harbour. Destroyed by an earthquake in 1222, it was rebuilt by the Lusignans, only to be dismantled in 1570 during the Ottoman invasion. It was refortified by the Ottomans after they wrested control that year. In the twentieth century, the British used it as a prison and a warehouse for salt.

HALLOUMI CHEESE Halloumi or hellim is an unripened and brined Cypriot cheese which has semi-soft texture. It is made by setting a blend of goat’s as well as sheep’s milk with rennet enzyme. Sometimes cow’s milk is also used in the preparation of this cheese. Till the 1950s, sheep and goats were the only sources of milk; hence this cheese is traditionally made from their milk. One amazing fact related to the preparation of Halloumi is that no acid or acid generating bacteria is used in the process. Originating during the Medieval Byzantine period, this cheese holds an important place in traditional Cyprus food. For commercial use, this cheese is not allowed to age. Halloumi is white in colour and has a texture of distinguishing layers. It is salty in taste and has a high melting point against other kinds of cheese which makes it perfect for frying. The shape of traditional halloumi is semicircular. It provides fat which is around 25% of wet weight or 47% of dry weight along with 17% of protein.

Anari

ANARI CHEESE Anari cheese is made from fresh whey in Cyprus. It has gained popularity among the masses because of the publicity blast that followed after Anari won a silver medal in the 2005World Cheese Awards. This cheese should be consumed shortly after it is produced as it has a short shelf life. Various kinds of fillings of Anari are used while preparing Bourekia which is a customary Cypriot pastry dish. Dry Anari becomes too hard and therefore it is used in the grated form for garnishing. 100gm of commercially prepared fresh anari cheese comprises of 15 grams of fat and 11 grams of protein. Anari cheese holds a special place in the Culture of Cypriot as it has been mentioned in Spanos & the 40 Dragons which is a traditional fairytale.

GOAT CHEESE Goat cheese is a group that is constituted of different kinds of cheese made from goat milk. Goat cheese has been one of the main ingredients of traditional Cyprus foods. Halloumi cheese is the most popular in the group. Anari cheese has the structure of ricotta and is unripe white coloured cheese; it is made mostly from the whey produced while making Halloumi cheese. This cheese is a good source of protein and is usually served in the form of a dessert along with walnuts and honey. Kefalotiri cheese requires a rather long period of maturation. Produced in the different provinces of Greece, it has a signature soft flaky texture. Another cheese in this section is Pafitiko cheese which is also ripened but it is mostly produced in and around Paphos. It is of pale yellow colour and tastes similar to Kefalotiri. These days Pafitiko is produced during the time period of February–April.

With so much to do, where will PAPHOS ZOO The Paphos Zoo is a must-see wildlife experience for the whole family. Originally intended for the owner’s private extensive bird collection, the zoo was opened to the public in 2003 so that everyone could enjoy the beautiful birds and learn about conservation. Located 20 km north of Paphos city centre, the zoo now houses many birds and animals including a giraffe, a crocodile, a kangaroo, monkeys, meerkats, lions, tigers, tortoises, parrots, reptiles, etc. You can’t really miss the zoo’s most recent addition — the elephant. The zoo also offers a restaurant, children’s play area and daily bird and owl shows. At extra cost, you can feed the giraffe and/or include transportation from hotels in Coral Bay, Paphos, Limassol or Pissouri.

APHRODITE WATERPARK When temperatures climb, what better way to cool off than at the waterpark? With over 15 rides and slides to choose from, the Aphrodite Waterpark is sure to have something for everyone. The park also offers a restaurant, snack kiosks, souvenir shop, children’s adventure playground, music all day with a live DJ on selected days, spacious changing rooms with secure lockers, and a photographer to capture all the fun. Parking is free and the park will refund the cost of using public transportation (one-way only). Open every day from Apr 20 — Oct 31. SPECTACULAR BEACHES Enjoy the gorgeous Mediterranean Sea from one of the many beaches in Paphos and surrounding areas. You can go for a swim, take a stroll, dive or snorkel, participate in water sports or simply soak in the sun. Paphos Municipal Beach is easy to access from many of the hotels and offers great coastal and sunset views, shops, restaurants and a nice swimming area. Just north of Paphos you can find another stunning beach at Coral Bay. This popular beach features clean sparkling waters, golden sand, beautiful views and coves to explore. Continuing north, you can check out Lara Beach if you are looking for a more quiet and secluded area. This beach has a turtle conservation station and is one of the last remaining nesting grounds of the Loggerhead and Green-Back turtles in the Mediterranean Sea. The Latchi area, along Chrysochu Bay to the north, is also home to some nice beaches including Asprokremnos and Latchi.

GO KARTING Looking for some high-speed adventure? Test your skills and race your friends and family at Paphos Karting Centre! Paphos Karting Centre is conveniently located just 5 minutes from Paphos harbour. Here you will find 1600 meters of adrenaline inducing track and Europe’s only bridge and tunnel track. There are karts available for all skill levels, from the novice driver to the more experienced racer. KATO PAPHOS ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most important historical sites in Cyprus. The park contains sites and monuments from prehistoric times to the Middle Ages, including four Roman villas (the houses of Dionysos, Orpheus, Aion and Theseus) at the epicentre of the archaeological finds. Walk around the park and instantly be transported back in time, finding yourself surrounded by ancient houses and buildings. Take the time to appreciate the breath-taking mosaic tiled floors, well-preserved amphitheatre, impressive underground Tombs of the Kings amongst other amazing sites. Be prepared to spend a good amount of time here with quite a bit of walking. BOAT TRIPS Whether you’re looking to spend a relaxing day out at sea, do some turtle watching or jump some waves, there’s a boat trip waiting for you! Getting off land and out onto the sea gives you a different perspective of Cyprus’ beautiful coastline, sparkling waters and diverse marine life. There are many companies based out of Paphos and surrounding areas that offer boat trips: Wave Dancer Boat Trips, Paphos Sea Cruises, Atlantis Turtle Watching Cruise, Venus Sea Cruises, and Tiger Boat to name a few. Many of the cruises offer full or half day trips, sunset cruises, private charters, and/or cater to special events such as weddings. Please check individual company websites to tailor your boat cruise to suit your timeframe, budget and interests. AKAMAS PENINSULA NATIONAL PARK Any nature lover should make the journey to Akamas Peninsula National Park. This protected park covers 230 km2 and is located at Cyprus’ northwestern tip. It is a bit of a bumpy road to get there, but well worth the drive for the gorgeous scenery and serene atmosphere. Akamas is an ecological wonderland; it is home to an impressive number of flora and fauna and boasts beautiful gorges, valleys, rock formations and cliffs. Activities you can enjoy in the park include hiking the nature trails, birdwatching, visiting the Baths of Aphrodite, swimming and snorkelling at Blue Lagoon and camping.

Avgolemono Soup or Egg-Lemon: You can’t go into a Cyprus house without this being part of it. Traditionally enjoyed around Easter, Avgolemono has a frothy lemon flavoured broth. Egg-Lemon Soup is prepared with many different meats including; Lamb, Beef, Chicken, and even fish. The chicken version is preferred.

Tahini is a delicious dip made with sesame seeds, garlic, lemon juice, cumin and olive oil. This is served with a Kosher meat meal as a dairy-free alternative to a cream sauce.

Lountza is a pork tenderloins soaked in brine and marinated in red wine. After the marinade, the pork is then smoked and dried until it become hard and full of flavour.

Fasolada: Fasolada translates to “bean”. This is a Greek bean soup which comes prepared with dry white beans, olive oil, celery, carrots, tomatoes, parsley, onion, and bay leaf. Lima beans are sometimes substituted for white beans.

Halloumi Cheese is the island’s most famed cheese. When part of the Cyprus Meze, this rich-flavoured cheese is served grilled. Grilled halloumi is perfect with a piece of spicy village sausage and pitta bread.

Tsamarella is goat’s meat that is salted and cured for preservation. Zalatina is a gelatinous boiled pork dish. Traditionally cooked with a pig’s head.

Souvlaki is everything you think of in a Pork Kebab, served with a salad and a pickle. Souvlaki is a smaller version of Souvla.

Kleftiko — Traditionally a lamb dish that is marinated in lemon juice and cinnamon while it is cooked in a kiln for a least 24 hours, making the meat tender and full of flavour. Stifado is an aromatic stew made with either rabbit or beef. The meat is simmered in wine, spices, vinegar, and onions. Moussaka is a bake of potatoes, eggplant and lamb in layers, covered in béchamel sauce, a white sauce made with butter and flour cooked in milk. Moussaka is often served in the style of a casserole in Cyprus. Cicek dolmasi — stuffed marrow flowers. The flowers are stuffed with onion, tomatoes and mint leaves and then baked to achieve a consistent and uniform taste.

Kleftiko

Lalangi is a delicious recipe from the traditional Turkish Cypriot kitchen. Boiled wild rabbit added to dough then deep fried. Sheftalia is a traditional Cypriot crépinette, using caul fat or the greater omentum, the membrane that surrounds the stomach of a pig or a lamb, to wrap the ingredients and is grilled similar to a kebab or a sausage in its crepine skin. Seafood — Popular seafood dishes include cuttlefish, calamari and sea bass. The Cipura is the most popular fish, soused with lemon, inserted in a beehive oven and placed outdoors to bake.

Horiatiki — Also known as “village salad” is the focal point of the Mediterranean diet. It has protein from the feta and olives and olive oil, vegetables, tomatoes, cucumber, peppers and onion.

Cypriots traditionally make their sweets and desserts with turunc or bergamot, figs, aubergines, walnuts and honey. Watermelon and pumpkins are processed similar to jam but with being careful about over cooking it. The fruit is then soaked, depending on the fruit, or as long as two weeks. Then the fruit is boiled with sugar until proper texture is attained. Loukoum, Ravani, Tulumba and Baklava are well-known local desserts.

Greek Salad is made with diced tomatoes, cucumber slices, feta cheese and Kalamata Olives. This salad is typically seasoned with salt and oregano, and dressed with olive oil. Cypriot-style potato salad is a huge hit, served with grilled fish. Extra virgin olive oil and lemon juice to taste. Olives, Capers, Coriander leaves and finely sliced onions add a little pep to the meal.

Triantafyllo. Made from the extract of the Cyprus rose, it become a thick pink concentrate once extracted; add milk or water and the drink becomes refreshing as it is sweet. Coffee is often made strong and has it’s own characteristics. Locals like to accompany coffee with demitasse cups filled with dissolved sugar, known as Glyko or medium sweet (Metrio); only a select few will brave the unsweetened beverage (Sketo). Iced drinks in Cyprus mainly consist of Frappe. Much like coffee, Cypriots enjoy their Frappes with sugar (Glyko, Metrio or Sketo) but it can also be served with milk. Olo Gala (all milk), Miso- Miso (half milk, half water) or Mavro (all water). Brandy and zivania are, without question, the most popular drinks on the island. Beer is also a favourite among Cypriots. Zivania is made with pomace, the residue of grapes when pressed for wine making.

CORAL BAY BEACH 6 km north of Paphos, this classic holiday sandy beach with Blue Flag status is perfect and safe for family-friendly water activities because of its shallow waters. Amazing Family Easter Holiday at Aphrodite Hills Hotel Our family had an amazing experience at Aphrodite Hills Hotel and Resort over the Easter Holiday, which we would like to share with every reader. We had a spacious 2-rooms family suite to ourselves with a magnificent view of the Mediterranean Sea.

HE RESORT reminded us of a village because it had everything we needed, from a supermarket to a medical centre, and was located just above the mythical spot where the goddess Aphrodite was born out of the sea. Hotel staff made sure that the Easter holiday was a special time for our family. We were invited to participate in a traditional Easter dinner and celebration, where we enjoyed live cooking (the meat was cooked right in front of us) at the local Cyprus tavern and a show with traditional singing and dancing. There was even an Easter egg hunt for the kids! The kids were never bored thanks to all the activities available. They loved the bouncy castle, water ball, Mini Club, horse riding, mini golf, tennis, volleyball, and waterpark. All these activities were on the resort grounds, which was very convenient for everyone. We all played golf on the beautiful 18-hole championship course. This course is great because it is suitable for all player levels, so even as beginners we could participate. You can also get personalised lessons if you wish. The Club House can provide all equipment, including golf carts and has a nice restaurant as well. While the kids were busy, we indulged in delicious cocktails by the adults-only pool. The nightly entertainment was a great way to cap off a busy day of activities.

The resort has a variety of dining options — we sampled all the restaurants and the food was amazing at every one of them! Jasmine Restaurant offers Asian cuisine including Chinese food and sushi, Fig and Olive has traditional Mediterranean food, the open-air El Sabor restaurant offers tasty Mexican meals, and the buffet (Eleona’s) had a great selection of international food, a children’s buffet, homemade desserts, live cooking and theme nights. You could also go to the lobby bar at any time for snacks and drinks. We would highly recommend the Aphrodite Hills Hotel for its exceptional customer service, a wide range of activities for the whole family, and amazing food. The hotel staff did an excellent job at ensuring that our Easter holiday was everything we expected and more, and we appreciated the effort that went into the Easter-themed activities. The resort had everything we could possibly want during our holiday and we could not be happier with our stay!

FLOOD FESTIVALKATAKLYSMOS The annual festival Kataklysmos, the Cyprus Water Festival (Festival of the Flood) takes place fifty days after Orthodox Easter. Celebrated only in Cyprus and some Greek coastal villages, this festival marks the Pentecost. Honouring Noah and the Flood, celebrations are focused on water. People sprinkle each other with sea water, a symbolic purification of body and soul. The 3–4 day event includes numerous contests. Sunset kicks off music and dancing late into the night. SHAKESPEAREAN NIGHTS The Shakespeare festival is an annual charity event held at the ancient open air theatre of Kourion (Curium), 19 km from Limassol. The month-long Festival welcomes several international theatre companies to present one performance each, either in Ancient or Modern Greek. THE AMATHUSIA FESTIVAL This festival takes place among the ruins of the Agora, of the lower city kingdom of Amathus, ten km east of Limassol. It was once among the strongest and most powerful kingdoms of antiquity and had a great Sanctuary of Aphrodite. PLATRES HERB FESTIVAL The Platres herb festival takes place at the Cultural Centre of Platres and Platres’ Main Square. August and September LIMASSOL WINE FESTIVAL This 10-day long annual event of evening fun and frolic in August and September is open to one and all. 15,000+ visitors come to the Festival, pay an entry free, and drink as much free wine as they wish. Transportation from other major cities is free. Local transportation can be made available by 4VIPTour. The site is dominated by the 7m tall ‘The Vraga Man’, a Cypriot winegrower. Festivities include traditional music, bouzouki, singing, dancing, Cypriot food priced cheaply, fireworks displays and treading of the grapes.

KOUMANTARIA FESTIVAL The Koumantaria or Commandaria Festival is celebrated in Laneia village, one of the 14 villages in a small area in the Troodos Mountains producing the signature Cypriot Commandaria Wine. Commandaria is a sweet amber-coloured dessert wine made from sun-dried grapes using the Xynisteri and Mavro varieties. It is thought to be the world’s oldest named wine still in production, dating back to 800 BC. The annual week-long festival draws many crowds each year, both locals and tourists alike to Laneia. The festival programme includes Greek and traditional Cypriot revelry, traditional Cypriot delicacies and as much Commandaria as you’d like at the ‘Old Linos Winery’. LIMASSOL BEER FESTIVAL Limassol hosts a 3-day dance and beer event at the Molos Waterfront promenade. The event is fairly new but highly successful, where visitors enjoy tasting Cypriot and a wide array of international brands of beer sold at low prices, and savour appropriate snacks and meals. DJ’s and international bands perform on a huge stage. Admission is free. A similar festival is held at Ayia Napa in late August. EASTER DAYS Celebrated from sixth of April till the tenth of April, Easter is the greatest festival in Orthodox Cyprus. The crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Cavalry will be commemorated on 6th April, Good Friday. Saturday 7th April, known as Holy Saturday, is the day before Easter and the last day of the ‘Holy Week’. Holy Saturday is also called Easter Saturday, Joyous Saturday or the Saturday-of-Light. On that evening, youngsters will light a bonfire near their church recalling Judas Iscariot and his betrayal of Christ. At about 11.30 pm everyone will gather for the Easter midnight service. Easter, 8th April 2018, also called Pascha or Resurrection Sunday, is a festival and holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. At the Outskirts of Paphos Where a lot of fascinating history resides… PHYTI Situated at an ideal height of 680 m on a plateau, Village Phyti entertains tantalising views while being connected to three different villages via road. It came into existence way back, in medieval times. Textiles and craft seen all over Cyprus come from the primary centre, Village Phyti, including the favoured ‘Fythkiotika,’ which tourists view in the Museum of Weaving and Folkloric Art. Traditional specimens of art and architecture are maintained in the construction of houses in the community, thereby retaining history in an indispensable form.

VILLAGE KOUKLIA is a fascinating village and significant for archeologists seeking new sites to dig.

SIMOU This 410 m high village is known for its large vineyards that grow grapes of the wine-making variety, while legumes, olive trees, cereals and fruit trees are grown alongside in the village. It is believed that this Village Simou existed with the same title in the era of Frankish domination as a private property of the noble Zappe Family. Of its two churches, the smaller but main 18th century edifice is devoted to the Virgin Mary Chryseleoussis and contains a 17th century icon of Theotokos, the Virgin Mary. The bigger modern church is built in the new architectural style.

EMBA One of the largest villages in Cyprus, with a spread of 6.7 sq km and a massive population of 6,500 people, Village Emba is so named as it lies at the entrance to Paphos. AYIA MARINA CHRYSOCHOUS Agia Marina Village is 14km northeast of Poli Chrysochous at an altitude of 190 m. The proximity of the mountains to the sea creates a picturesque landscape. A cultivable plain lies west of the village. In 1965, a barrier was built near the village to irrigate this plain. Legend has it that the area was infected with the plague but Saint Marina exterminated it, saving the villagers, who then named the village Agia Marina Chrysochous, glorifying her.

TSADA

TIMI Timi Village, extant from the Middle Ages, is believed to be named after ‘Timia’, the goddess Aphrodite. A tranquil traditional Cypriot village setting with the touch of luxury, it lies 16km east of Paphos, close to Secret Valley, Aphrodite Hills and the fantastic golf course, spa and restaurants there. Timi village itself has three taverns, a supermarket and a general purpose bazaar. It also has a few archaeological sites close by, dating to prehistoric times. Superb beaches and verdant forests make Timi village another fascinating place to visit. On Sundays join the locals and tourists in the bustling market, selling many items ranging from bedding and books to fruit and vegetables. TALA Village Tala is only 8 km away in the outskirts of Paphos, with a natural surrounding and a slope running northeast−southwest. The village is not mentioned in medieval sources. However its name is considered to originate in the Frankish era, from the surname of the wealthy D’Avila family. Church Agia Ekaterini (St. Catherine) of the 15th/16th century is a significant archeological site in the community and standing close by is the monastery of Agia Neofytos which has had an important influence on the life of the village. People of the Tala community enjoy their time at Wood Carving Exhibition and at the Heroes Monument, with a fine progression in tourist villas and houses to go by.

Tourists will find quite a few interesting places in Village Simou, including the Venetian bridge over River Skarfou.

TSADA A mountainous village some 10 km away from Paphos, Village Tsada is well known for exclusive viticulture which exists as the basic source of income for the community. Apart from a luscious production of wines in its hilly plains, cereals, walnut, almond, apple trees and few vegetables are also grown in the heart of the village. Transport is readily available to link with the north, the west and the south to facilitate complete access. Majorly, the village is assumed to have taken birth in recent times; nonetheless, old settlements and traces of history are found in places between Tsada and the Monastery of Ayios Neofytos. AYIA VARVARA There is a long history to go with this astounding village which speaks largely about the present views of the community. Ayia Varvara is located in the coastal plain of Paphos, on a hill on the right bank of the river Ezousa, some 5 km from the sea. It has two churches dedicated to Saint Barbara, the first of which experienced a fire. The church did not suffer any lasting damage as the fire extinguished itself. Almost all current residents of the village are engaged in animal husbandry.

The power of faith Paphos is a coastal city in Cyprus famous for its connection with mysteries and religion. Christianity came to Paphos fairly quickly after Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection. His apostles, Paul and Barnabas, came to the seat of the Roman government in Cyprus, Paphos, on invitation by Sergius Paulus, the proconsul of Cyprus. Today, Christianity is the major religion of the city. This is why Paphos and its surrounding areas are bedecked with many monasteries and churches. AGIOS NEOPHYTES MONASTERY The Agios Neophytes Monastery is one of the most significant monasteries of the city of Paphos. Established by a Monk named Neophytos in 1170 AD, this monastery was earlier a cave which was hewn out from the side of the mountains by the Monk. It was transformed into a chamber as well as a church in 1159 AD. Destroyed by the earthquake of 1953, the monastery was rebuilt thereafter. The church and the Enkleistra (cell of the monk) have been decorated with beautiful Byzantine paintings. Legend has it that the grave of Neophytos is adjusted in such a way that it becomes active if anyone approaches it.

AGIOS SAVVAS TIS KARONOS MONASTERY Agios Savvas tis Karonos Monastery is believed to be built during the twelfth century. It is located near Prastio Village, Kelokedhara. This church has been rebuilt on the remains of the older church with the same name which dated back to the sixteenth century. The monastery was destroyed in a fire in 1467. It was once again rebuilt with the help of King James II of Cyprus. The church of this monastery was constructed in the year 1533, renovated in 1742 and is maintained in good shape on a regular basis. AGIA PARASKEVI CHURCH Agia Paraskevi Church is a truly significant church in Paphos. It is constructed in the form of a basilica with five cupolas outlining the shape of a cross. It was built during the ninth century and is preserved in virtually its original structure. It is unique and famous because of its spell-binding frescoes and murals, some of them dating back to the ninth century and amongst the oldest in Cyprus. The most famed portrait of this church is a two-sided icon. One side depicts Virgin Mary or the ‘Gerokipiotissa,’ whereas the other depicts the Crucifixion. PANAGIA CHRYSOPOLITISSA CHURCH This church was constructed during the 13th century AD on the remains of the biggest Byzantine basilica of Paphos. A stone pillar

called Saint Paul’s Pillar can be seen in the church compound. According to the Bible, Apostle Paul came to Paphos to meet Sergius Paulus, the proconsul of Cyprus. Paul was tied to this pillar and given 39 lashes by Elymas the sorcerer to stop him from meeting the proconsul. People visit this church and pray for their happiness and well-being. PANAGIA CHRYSORROYIATISSA MONASTERY Another important monastery of Paphos is Panagia Chrysorroyiatissa Monastery. Located near Panagia village, it was founded in 1152 AD by a monk called Ignatius who found an icon of the Virgin Mary at Moula, near Paphos. He installed it in a monastery and dedicated it to Virgin Mary or the Cypriot 'Our Lady of the Golden Pomegranate'. This icon is thought to be painted by Luke the Evangelist. The monastery hosts a variety of religious icons. The statue that attracts the most attention is of Virgin Mary, made of pure silver. Many devotees visit this monastery and church seeking blessings for family happiness and well-being. PANAGIA THEOSKEPASTI CHURCH The word Theoskepasti means ‘Veiled by God’. This church is devoted to Virgin Mary. Legend has it that when Arabs tried to raid the island, a thick fog assumed to be directed by God covered the old church to protect it from the raiders. Due to the fog, the Arabs were not able to see properly when they approached the church and it was thus saved.

The new church was constructed during 1923. It is situated on the rock from which the complete Kato area of Paphos can be seen. Every year hundreds of tourists visit this church and admire it’s scenic as well as wonderful icons and iconostasis made of hand-carved wood. They bow their heads to the silver-coated icon of Virgin Mary and seek her blessings for their family’s health and happiness. This icon of Virgin Mary is considered to be amongst the seventy paintings done by Luke the Evangelist. BASILICA OF PANAGIA LIMENIOTISSA Located in Kato Paphos near the harbor, this church was built in the early half of the fifth century and is devoted to ‘Limeniotissa’ which means ‘Our Lady of the Harbour’. It was raided by Arabs in 653 AD and restored after they left in 688 AD. It was totally destroyed in the earthquakes of 1159 and 1222 AD and forgotten. Rediscovered in 1937 AD and excavated in 1959 AD, the Panagia Limeniotissa basilica with a few restored columns and colourful mosaics is part of Paphos Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Атлантида на Кипре?

Споры о легендарном острове Атлантида, на котором располагался город атлантов, не умолкают вот уже два тысячелетия — с тех пор, как великий Платон рассказал о нeм в своих диалогах «Тимей» и «Критий».

том, где находилась Атлантида и где искать то, что от неe могло остаться, гадают до сих пор. Атлантиду ищут в Атлантике возле Марокко, в Андах, в Бразилии, в Ирландии, в Румынии и даже в Антарктиде! Многие исследователи искали Атлантиду в районе Балеарских и Канарских островов. Один из исследователей выдвинул версию, что Атлантида располагалась на месте нынешних Британских островов и Ирландии, а утонула в результате таяния ледников. Знаменитому подводному исследователю Жаку-Иву Кусто почти удалось доказать, что найденные на дне Средиземного моря остатки минойской цивилизации принадлежат именно погибшей Атлантиде. Исследователь Роберт Сармаст обнаружил под водой в 11 км от Кипра прямоугольный пласт земли, простирающийся к северо-востоку в сторону Сирии. Он утверждает, что именно остров Кипр был вершиной холма и частью Атлантиды. Почему Роберт Сармаст решил искать Атлантиду на Кипре? Можно заметить, что, прежде всего, описание Атлантиды напоминает как по рельефу, так и по природным условиям острова Средиземного моря. Платон пишет, что Атлантида была богата металлами. Подобная характеристика не свойственна островам Атлантического океана, зато в древние времена была присуща Кипру.

Многие исследователи считают, что острова Средиземного моря — это осколки затонувшей цивилизации. В качестве примера приводят и высокоразвитую критскую цивилизацию, тоже погибшую внезапно при сильнейшем землетрясении. Что было известно об Атлантиде Платону? В своих диалогах он сообщает, что Атлантида исчезла в течение одного дня и одной трагической ночи — «за одни ужасные сутки». Приступая к описанию Атлантиды, Платон предупреждает, что название самого острова, как и все другие имена в его рассказе, не подлинные, а переведенные на греческий язык. Египтяне, которые первыми писали историю Атлантиды, перевели аланские имена на свой лад. Солон (афинский политик, законодатель и один из «семи мудрецов» Древней Греции), который и сообщил Платону сведения об этом острове, не видел надобности сохранять египетские названия и перевел их на греческий язык. А сама история острова, по легенде, начинается с рассказа о разделе Земли между тремя богами-братьями: Зевсом, Аидом и Посейдоном. Посейдону, ставшему повелителем морей, по жребию и достался остров Атлантида, на котором тогда жили только три смертных человека — «один из мужей по имени Евнор, в самом начале произведeнный на свет Землею, с женой Ливкиппой и их дочерью — красавицей Клейто». Посейдон влюбился в Клейто, она стала его супругой и родила пять пар близнецов — первых десятерых царей Атлантиды. Как заботливый отец, Посейдон для защиты обнeс остров тремя водными и двумя сухопутными кольцами, атланты же перекинули через эти кольца мосты и прорыли каналы, так что корабли могли по ним подплывать к самому городу или, точнее, к центральному острову, имевшему 5 стадиев (немногим менее километра) в диаметре. На острове Посейдон соорудил для Клейто и себя храмы, украшенные серебром и золотом и окружeнные золотыми статуями, а также роскошный царский дворец. Полагают, что остров Атлантида находился на значительном возвышении над уровнем моря, а берег был обрывистым и высоким. Кругом столицы простиралась равнина, окруженная горами, доходившими до моря. Об этой равнине ходили сказания как о самом красивом и плодородном месте на земле. Она была густо усеяна селениями, разделенными озерами, реками, лугами, где паслось множество диких и домашних животных. В диалоге Платона «Тимей» афинский политический деятель Критий повествует о войне Афин с Атлантидой, якобы со слов своего деда Крития-старшего, которому, в свою очередь, пересказал историю Солон, услышавший ее от жрецов в Египте. Суть рассказа такова: в те времена, когда Афины были наиболее славным, могущественным и добродетельным государством, главным их соперником была упомянутая Атлантида. На острове возникло удивительное по величине и могуществу царство, владевшее всей Ливией до Египта и Европой до Тиррении (запад Италии). Все силы этого царства были брошены на порабощение Афин. Вскоре, однако, произошло грандиозное разрушительное землетрясение, за которым последовали сильнейшие наводнения, в результате которых остров был поглощен морем в один день вместе со своими жителями — атлантами. Платон указывает время катастрофы как «9 000 лет назад», то есть около 9500 г. до н. э. Есть ли шансы найти Атлантиду, погибшую примерно 12 тысяч лет тому назад? Скорее всего, за это время стены и постройки города, если бы они и сохранились, под воздействием морской воды изменились до неузнаваемости, покрылись илистыми наносами, заросли водорослями, актиниями и кораллами; металлические и медные предметы растворились, а деревянные конструкции исчезли через несколько столетий после катастрофы. МОНАСТЫРСКИЙ КОМПЛЕКС НЕОФИТОСА ЗАТВОРНИКА Как говорят историки Неофит родился в небольшой горной деревне Лефкара в 12 веке нашей эры. Юношей он тайно покинул родительский дом, чтобы посвятить себя служению Богу, и ушeл в монастырь. Однако желание Неофита идти дальше и дальше в своeм духовном поиске привело его в Иерусалим, где монах хотел найти наставника и убежище от мирской суеты. Эти поиски не увенчались успехом, спустя некоторое время Неофит вернулся на Кипр, и, в конце концов, отыскал для себя уединeнную пещеру в горном районе Пафоса, вырубил в ней каменную скамью для работы и сна, а в восточной стене кельи подготовил для себя гробницу, в которой его впоследствии и похоронили. Пока Неофит жил в своей пещерной келье, он трудился над созданием монастыря. Он построил алтарь и неф, соединив их со своим жилищем, а чуть позднее появилась и трапезная. Новую обитель освятили именем Святого Креста. Со временем слухи о новой обители и отшельнике, еe основавшем, распространились по всей округе, и в монастырь потянулись ученики. Шли годы, за свою долгую историю монастырь Святого Неофита пережил несколько взлeтов и падений и в настоящее время функционирует. Расположен монастырь в 9 км от города Пафоса и доступен для туристов. При монастыре работает музей, выставляющий византийские иконы. Каждый год в январе здесь проводится ярмарка, на которой монахи продают продукты питания, церковную утварь и иконы местной мастерской, ладан. На сайте монастыря есть расписание богослужений на месяц вперед.

МОНАСТРЫРЬ СВЯТОГО НЕОФИТА

ЦЕРКОВЬ СВЯТОЙ ПАРАСКЕВЫ По легенде святая Параскева была одной из самых почитаемых женщин-святых, известной во всем христианском мире. Святая великомученица жила в 3‑м веке в малоазийском городе Иконии. В 300 году за исповедание христианства и отказ принести жертву языческим богам она была подвергнута 104 жесточайшим пыткам. Параскеву подвесили на дереве и протыкали ее тело железными гвоздями, затем израненную до костей и едва живую бросили в темницу. Бог не оставил святую и чудесно исцелил ее. Это еще больше разозлило мучителей, и они стали жечь ее факелами. Наконец, они не выдержали стойкости святой и отсекли ей мечом голову. Сегодня Церковь святой Параскевы (Agia Paraskevi) — одна из самых значительных церквей византийского периода на Кипре. Архитектура храма завораживает. Снаружи пять куполов расположенные в виде креста в византийском стиле. Внутри сохранилась впечатляющая галерея кипрской фресковой живописи 9–15 веков.

/ святые места / О происхождении названия обители единого мнения нет. Кто-то связывает его со словом «Ригена», что может переводиться как правительница, царица, королева. Кто-то связывает название с многочисленными садами гранатовых деревьев, которые раскинулись вокруг монастыря: «роди» (с греч.) — гранат. Однако наиболее убедительной считается третья точка зрения, что название обители произошло от имени горы «Роя».

В 1821 году случилось общегреческое восстание против османского ига. В то время многие монастыри помогали восставшим. Часто в их стенах прятались потерпевшие поражение повстанцы. Османы заподозрили в такой помощи и монастырь Хрисороятисса, в связи с чем настоятель Иоаким подвергся пыткам и вскоре умер. Но сам монастырь был сохранeн.

По преданиям, в античные времена здесь были сады, посвященные богине Афродите. Паломники со всего Восточного Средиземноморья после долгого странствия по морю делали в этом месте остановку на пути к храму Афродиты в Старом Пафосе.

МОНАСТЫРЬ ХРИСОРОЯТИССА Известно, что в христианской истории был период, когда в Византии в 8 веке начались гонения на иконы — так называемый период иконоборчества. Легенда гласит, что в это время в Малой Азии икону с изображением Девы Марии передали на сохранение одной из прихожанок монастыря. Опасаясь, что образ всe-таки найдут в еe доме, добрая женщина от отчаяния пустила икону в волны Средиземного моря. Прошло время. И в один прекрасный день местный рыбак обнаружил на песочном берегу Пафоса икону с образом Богоматери. Недолго думая мужчины взял икону в руки и решил ее спрятать дабы сохранить ее, и отнес

образ далеко в горы Пафоса. Спустя четыре века икону Богородицы нашeл отшельник — Игнатий. Место для обустройства церкви Игнатию указал ангел — с троить еe надо было на горе Рой. К сожалению, с момента возникновения и вплоть до середины 18 века о монастыре сохранилось совсем немного сведений. Свет пролил русский монах-путешественник Василий Григорович Барский, посетивший обитель в 1735 году. Он писал, что в монастыре имеется «небольшая церковь с круглой кровлей и две или три кельи», он очень мал и беден, и монахи «пищу добывают, занимаясь земледелием и разведением коз». Нынешний главный храм обители является одним из шести важнейших монастырей острова. В настоящее время монахов в монастыре нет, поэтому его нельзя назвать действующий в полной мере. За долгую историю своего существования храм пережил общегреческое восстание против османского ига, пожар и несколько реконструкций. По инициативе игумена Дионисия с июня 2001 года для посещения открыта монастырская ризница. В ней собраны и экспонируются реликвии обители с 7 по середину 19 веков. Самая древняя — нагрудный крест 7 века. На территории монастыря есть картинная галерея, в которой представлены 55 картин кипрских и иностранных художников, собранные в 1978– 2010 годы игуменом Дионисием. В погребах монастыря по сегодняшний день сохранена старая винодельня. Все приспособления, такие как винный пресс, кувшины для брожения, оборудование для прессовки и перемалывания винограда, а также весы были куплены в 1928 году. В 1977 году монастырь и его винодельни с погребами посетили французские виноделы, которые убедили игумена возобновить еe работу. И в 1984 году винодельня обрела свою вторую жизнь.

ВИНО Виноделие на Кипре существует уже около пяти тысяч лет. Тому свидетельствуют археологические раскопки в одной из деревушек близ Лимассола, где были найдены кувшины для хранения вина. После радиоуглеродного анализа удалось установить, что их возраст составляет около трeх тысяч лет до нашей эры. Опыт и традиции у кипрского вина колоссальны. Давайте вспомним несколько ключевых вех в истории Кипра, непосредственно отразившихся на виноделии. 76

ВИНОДЕЛИЕ НА КИПРЕ

ИПР всегда был важным аванпостом в средиземном море и на своей земле повидал огромное количество цивилизаций и народностей. Скорее всего, первыми виноград на Кипр привезли Финикийцы, так же как на Крит и греческие острова, а затем его стали выращивать на самой материковой части Греции. Греческие или, точнее, античные традиции виноделия, крепко укоренились и дают о себе знать по сей день. Может быть, из тех времeн или всe-таки из пережитков средневековья осталась эта традиция любить и делать хорошее молодое вино!? Дело в том, что на Кипре многие виноделы высокого уровня действительно очень ценят и гордятся своим молодым вином, так как именно в нeм раскрывается вся полнота вкуса, аромата и особенности определeнного субрегиона или терруара, то есть совокупности почвы, климата и местности. Безусловно, вина выдержанные всегда были и будут цениться во все времена, как продукт элитарного, коллекционного, эксклюзивного и утончeнного характера. Но во многом это стало доступно благодаря технологиям и развитию винной отросли, как таковой. В давние времена для того, чтобы сохранить вино, в него добавляли различные натуральные консерванты: гипс, золу, соль, размельченную в порошок белую глину (сейчас этот материал так же используют, но под более научным названием — бентонит), оливковое масло, молотый миндаль, кедровые орехи, семена укропа, тимьян, корицу, мeд, смолу акации и не только это… Безусловно, вино выдерживалось и сохранялось многие года, но можно легко представить, как эти ингредиенты влияли на вкус и аромат напитка. А в средние века и тем хуже: повсюду отсутствовала гигиена, а самым лучшим консервантом было слово божье, и поэтому если у торговца или производителя оставалось вино прошлого, или на крайний случай позапрошлого урожая, то его продавали по самым бросовым ценам, так как оно уже скисало, портилось и превращалось в уксус. Следуя вышесказанному, становится понятно, что в древние времена молодое вино само собой ценилось больше из практических интересов, а сейчас это в некотором смысле визитная карточка свежести и особенного вкуса винодела. После прекрасных античных времeн, рождения Афродиты и расцвета эллинистических государств на Кипре наступает продолжительная борьба с арабским влиянием. В 1191 году Кипр захватывает Ричард Львиное Сердце, наступает приход франков и западноевропейской цивилизации. Остались поразительные источники, рассказывающие нам о, наверное, первой дегустации

вина. В 1213 году в Шампани прошeл невиданный доселе пир. Король Франции Филипп II Август собрал вина со всех своих и дружественных владений, чтобы узнать какое же из них лучшее. Победило именно великое кипрское вино Коммандария! Сахар в те времена был крайне ценным продуктом, а Коммандария напиток с удивительным натуральным сладким вкусом, да ещe и способный пережить многие года хранения и выдержки. Конечно, такое вино было живым золотом. Своe современное название Коммандария получила благодаря рыцарям-тамплиерам. Производилось вино не так далеко от штаб-квартиры ордена, называющейся La Grande Commanderie. Эти же «воины бога» первыми завезли его во Францию. Под властью Османской империи вино на Кипре было практически под запретом, разрешалось производить только небольшое количество монастырям для ритуальных нужд, и производили всю ту же Коммандарию, то есть продолжались традиции создания лишь сладких креплeных вин. На протяжении XIX и большей части XX вв. виноделие на Кипре в отличие от всего мира развивалось своей спокойной, размеренной жизнью. Но вот в это время и произошла очередная винная победа Кипра.

Суждение вынес государь о винах, И каждому свой титул он присвоил; Так, кипрское вино он сделал Папой, Оно сияло ярче звeзд небесных.

Важно отметить, что в отличие от крупных заводов, которые находятся в нескольких десятках километров от виноградников, небольшие винодельни располагаются там же, где и произрастает виноград, это позволяет постоянно следить за качеством винограда и доводить его до процесса винификации в наилучшем качестве.

— ИЗ ПОЭМЫ «БИТВА ВИН» В середине XIX века из Прованса на юге Франции начинает распространяться беспощадная для виноградной лозы Viteus vitifolii, она же — паразитирующая на корнях растения филлоксера, которая погубила около трети всех европейских виноградников, а некоторые регионы, особенно во Франции, обделила и вовсе. Спасение от неe нашли лишь перед самым началом XX века. Лозы винограда стали прививать саженцами от американских клонов, которые имеют иммунитет к этой пакости. Во времена этих ужасных событий, когда американская тля поедала великие виноградники Бургундии и Роны, на Кипре даже не слышали о такой напасти. На Кипр филлоксера так и не добралась! И вина, производимые на виноградниках этого прекрасного острова, дают ягоды с лоз, произрастающих с корневищ, которым около 100 или 150 лет! И даже ту самую великую Коммандарию до сих пор могут производить с тех же лоз, что давали ягоды на создание вина, покорившего монархов Европы в XIII веке. Коммандарию производят из двух автохтонных, растущих только на Кипре, сортов винограда: красный сорт Мавро, придающий вину структуру, плотность, пряный и терпкий вкус,

/ история /В И Н О Д Е Л И Е сопряжeнный со слегка дымным ароматом, и белый сорт Ксинистери, поразительно лeгкий, фруктовый во вкусе и свежий, мягкий, цветочный в аромате. Из Ксинистери делают прекрасное молодое вино и некоторые виноделы производят Коммандарию из практически стопроцентного Ксинистери, добавляя лишь немного Мавро для структуры. Эта невиданная для многих популярных на сегодня винных регионов преемственность позволяет создавать вина с действительно культовой историей. С 80-х годов XX века на Кипре происходит невероятный скачок в развитии виноделия. Кроме оригинальных сортов Мавро, Ксинистери, Маратефтико, Офталмо, стали активно высаживаться международные сорта винограда Каберне Совиньон, Гренаш, Шираз, Мерло, Кариньян, Матаро, Совиньон Блан, Шардоне, Рислинг и многие др.

НА КИПРЕ

Условия, при которых растeт виноград на Кипре, более чем захватывающие. В основном наилучшие виноградники находятся на высоте от 800 до 1400 м над уровнем моря на известняковых и меловых почвах. Располагаются террасами на склонах холмов и долинах пересохших горных речушек. Виноград с таких склонов, конечно же, собирается вручную.

Стали активно появляться небольшие винодельни, производящие достойное сухое, десертное и креплeное вино. Да и сама по себе мобильность, свежий и новаторский взгляд на создание вина, живая, здоровая конкуренция среди молодых производителей очень сильно двигают вперeд кипрское виноделие. Связь с Европейским Союзом ещe больше приоткрывает двери для сотрудничества в среде виноделов. Постоянное сотрудничество со своими коллегами из Франции, Италии и Испании позволяет делиться совместным опытом и знаниями, а в виноделии это очень важный аспект. Стоит отметить, что большинство классических сортов неплохо приживаются на Кипре и при должном подходе дают достойные результаты. Но и из международных сортов уже появились явные фавориты, дающие особенно хорошие и выдающиеся результаты. Например, из Шираза, он же Сира, выходят великолепные насыщенные, плотные, но всe же по-европейски деликатные сухие вина, а некоторые винодельни производят даже десертные варианты. Каберне Совиньон при хорошей выдержке в дубе отлично раскрывает себя, оставляя свои классические характеристики и приобретая особенности кипрского терруара. Но, конечно, каждая винодельня пытается найти свой фирменный вкус, экспериментируя с купажами из местных и международных сортов. Так, например, очень занятным выглядит ассамбляж из Каберне Совиньон, Матаро (Мурведр) и Гренаш. Афродита

Остров Кипр с древних времeн называют прибежищем греческой богини любви и красоты Афродиты. О ее появлении на свет повествует несколько легенд. По одной из них, более ранней, записанной Платоном, богиня родилась из крови оскопленного Урана, которая, попав в море, образовала пену («афрос»), откуда и пошло как имя самой Афродиты («пенорожденная»), так и одно из ее прозвищ — Анадиомена («появляющаяся на поверхности моря»). ФРОДИТА УРАНИЯ, или «небесная», была богиней чистой и целомудренной любви в отличие от Афродиты Пандемос — пошлой и доступной покровительницы блудниц. По своему малоазийскому происхождению Афродита Урания близка и даже отождествляется с восточными богинями плодородия: финикийской Астартой, вавилоно-ассирийской Иштар и египетской Исидой. Со временем малоазийские черты Афродиты, сближавшие ее также с богиней-матерью Кибелой, становятся мягче, и архаическая богиня с присущей ей сексуальностью и плодовитостью превращается в кокетливую и нежную Афродиту, занявшую достойное место среди бессмертных богов Олимпа. У Гомера Афродита появляется у берегов Кипра из воздушной морской пены. Вот почему богиню часто называют Киприда, «кипророжденная». По преданию, ее супругом был Гефест — искуснейший мастер и самый некрасивый из всех богов. Любви прекрасной богини добивались многие, в том числе бог морей Посейдон и жестокий и беспощадный бог войны Арес, который романтически влюбился в самую красивую богиню. Будучи яростной защитницей троянцев, Афродита постоянно вмешивается в военные события под Троей: она спасает Париса, участвует в сражении и пытается вынести из битвы троянского героя Энея — своего сына от возлюбленного Анхиса. Но богиню преследует Диомед. Энея спасает Аполлон, который также был на стороне троянцев, а раненую Афродиту Арес доставил на Олимп в своей золотой колеснице. Гера и Афина — постоянные соперницы Афродиты — поднимают ее на смех, а Зевс советует ей не заниматься больше военными действиями, а устраивать счастливые браки. Гомер именует богиню «золотая, прекрасновенчанная, сладкоумильная, многозлатая и прекрасноокая». Афродите принадлежит пояс, в котором заключены любовь, желания, слава обольщения. Этот древний талисман, наделенный магической силой, покорял даже великих богов. Афродита постоянно приходила на помощь всем влюбленным. В одном из городов Кипра жил царь Пигмалион. Свою мечту он воплотил в статуе, изображавшей прекрасную женщину, которую царь назвал Галатея. Слава о ней прошла по всему Кипру. Скульптор влюбился в свое творение и однажды в храме Афродиты попросил богиню послать ему возлюбленную столь же прекрасную, как и Галатея. Афродита вняла мольбам Пигмалиона и велела Эроту оживить статую. В одном из вариантов этого мифа говорится о том, что богиня, не равнодушная к мужественной красоте Пигмалиона, сама на какое-то время воплотилась в ожившую статую. Но помогая любящим, богиня жестоко преследует тех, кто отвергает любовь: она покарала смертью Ипполита и Нарцисса, Пасифае и Мирре внушила противоестественную любовь, а Гипсипиллу и лемносских женщин наделила отвратительным запахом. Отец истории Геродот сообщает о почитании Афродиты Урании в Сирии, в Персии и даже у скифов. Храм Афродиты Урании

существовал в Афинах, а одним из самых древних и священных считался ее храм на острове Кифера. Правда, в афинском Акрополе был и храм в честь Афродиты Пандемос. Многочисленные святилища Афродиты разбросаны в различных частях Греции и на островах. Под именем Венеры ей поклонялись в Древнем Риме, где она считалась прародительницей римлян через своего сына — троянского героя Энея. На Кипре признание Афродиты пришло на смену богине плодородия, которая в период поздней бронзы была богиней Бронзы. Доказательством служит маленькая статуэтка богини Плодородия, которая наступает ногой на бронзовый талант. И Бронза, и Афродита отождествлялись в древности с Кипром. У богини было много имен, но самое популярное — Киприс, а затем Урания, Голгия, Пафия, Морфо, Акрэа, Анаса и др. Спутником богини был прекрасный Адонис — сын кипрского царя Кинира, а также его дочери Мирры. Культ Адониса существовал на Кипре и Лесбосе, Финикии, Сирии и Египте. В сирийском городе Библе находилось святилище Адониса, где в его честь проходили оргии. В эпоху эллинизма особой популярностью пользовались Адонии — праздники в его честь, связанные с распространением греко-восточного культа Осириса. По преданию, храм Афродиты в Пафосе построил спасшийся во время троянского пожара царь аркадийцев Агапинор. Основателем Палепафоса и храма Афродиты древнейшая история считает царя Кинира, выполнявшего функции верховного жреца и прорицателя в храме богини. Палепафос был главным центром поклонения Афродите на Кипре. Храм-оракул Афродиты принес Палепафосу сказочные сокровища. Ущелье Авакас

Ущелье Авакас — одно из красивейших мест острова, мало посещаемое «классическими» туристами. Однако если вам по душе яркие впечатления, движение и преодоление препятствий, загадки природы и редкие растения, то Авакас — именно то, что вам нужно!

ТО УЩЕЛЬЕ — поистине рай для любителей походов. Именно здесь вас ждут захватывающие дух виды и бесконечное разнообразие местной флоры и фауны, включая исчезающий centauria akamantis — растение-эндемик с фиолетовыми цветами, которое растет только в этом ущелье. Узнать его вы сможете по табличке, ведь в этом заповеднике все редкие растения отмечены специальными знаками. Будто высеченное из известкового камня, ущелье поднимается на высоту до 30 метров и резко сужается кверху, так что преодолеть его непросто! Пешеходная тропа здесь вьется вдоль реки, которая и сформировала это природное чудо много сотен лет назад. В сезон дождей она может превратиться в бурный поток. Однако пусть вас это не пугает, ведь в ущелье проложен специальный пешеходный маршрут, разработанный Лесным департаментом Министерства сельского хозяйства, природных ресурсов и окружающей среды Кипра. Протяженность оборудованной тропы — 3 км, однако на свой риск можно пройти дальше. Особо любопытным туристам придется пробираться вглубь, в некоторых местах карабкаться по камням, перелезать через поваленные деревья. Входя в ущелье, вы сразу оказываетесь в природном коридоре из скал и далее идете вглубь по сужающемуся проходу. В некоторых местах скалы нависают прямо над головой. Это зрелище немного пугает, но завораживает своей красотой. Именно Авакас является

одной из основных тем открыток, которые туристы привозят на память с Кипра. Стены ущелья имеют «волнистую» поверхность, и если вы любитель фотографировать — именно здесь вы получите самые удивительные снимки. В богатом растительностью ущелье кроме прочих деревьев растут сосны, кипарисы, можжевельник, дикие фиговые деревья, папоротники и дубы, и, конечно же, здесь изобилие диких цветов. Животный мир представлен лисами, зайцами, соколами, воронами, ночными совами, рептилиями и забавными дикими горными козами, которых — если не вблизи, то на высоких скалах вверху — вы точно увидите! И все же не все красоты и тайны ущелья нам доступны. Одно из самых удивительных и таинственных мест Авакаса для отдыхающих закрыто, а пройти туда без специального разрешения и снаряжения невозможно. Несколько лет назад местные пастухи обнаружили дверь в одной из скал. Ученые еще не до конца исследовали это место. На данный момент известно, что вниз под землю ведет узкий лаз, а далее, на глубине 70 метров, были обнаружены древние катакомбы, представляющие собой проходы, галереи, подземные залы, образуюшие огромный лабиринт. Загадочное подземелье до конца не изучено, но в нем уже были найдены наконечники стрел и глиняная посуда. Ущелье Авакас — настоящая жемчужина Кипра. И хотя посвятить его исследованию вам придется почти целый день, вы никогда об этом не пожалеете, ведь остров откроется вам с новой, неожиданной стороны!

Поверить на слово... Богатая история маленького Средиземноморского острова, переплетение культур, религий, языков, родили множество легенд и сказаний. Глубоко уважающие свои корни и традиции жители острова, трепетно передают их из уст в уста, из поколения в поколение. По мотивам кипрских легенд поэты сочиняют стихи, историки пишут статьи, а экскурсоводы, каждый на свой лад, рассказывают любознательным туристам через призму кипрских притчей историю любимого края.

КРАСОТА И ВЕЛИЧИЕ. ЛЕГЕНДА ОБ АФРОДИТЕ Как рассказывает Геосиод в «Теогонии», Крон разрубил тело своего отца Урана на куски и бросил их в море. Тогда вспенилось синее море, а из пены его вышла прекрасная златокудрая дива. Земфир нежным своим дыханием на морской волне и пене вынес Афродиту на Кипр в Пафос — так была описана история Гомером. Когда Афродита ступила на землю, на ней распустились прекрасные цветы анемоны и капори, которые и по сей день цветут на камнях в Пафосе. Встретить Афродиту вышел сам Зевс-громовержец и его дочери. С тех пор Кипр стал любимым островом богини любви, на котором она и предпочитала проводить все время. Как-то раз красавица Афродита игралась с малышом Эросом, богом любви, который пускает стрелы свои в каждого кто ему приглянулся, и нечаянно укололась Афродита о его стрелу. Тут из зарослей смоковницы вышел юный прекрасный Адонис, сын Царя Кинира. Влюбилась Афродита в красавца без памяти. Да и он не смог быть равнодушным к неземной красоте Богини. Но прознал о случайной страсти супруг Афродиты, воинственный Бог Арис. В гневе, превратился он в дикого вепря, и когда Адонис охотился в лесах Акамаса, подло напал на него и запорол острыми клыками. Из ран Адониса брызнула кровь, упала на землю Кипра. Бедная Афродита, почуяв беду, побежала в лес, но нашла своего возлюбленного бездыханным. Долго горевала прекрасная Богиня, слезы ее лились ручьем. Из капель крови Адониса взошли на Кипре маки алые, а из хрустальных слез Афродиты — белые анемоны. Образ Афродиты — ее красота, нежность и величие, передается в мифах и легендах сквозь призму прошлого так хорошо, что будто ты с ней знаком. По мимо своей красоты богиня имела доброе сердце. В этом легко убедиться окунувшись в еще один миф о Пигмалионе.

В ПОИСКАХ ИДЕАЛА. ЛЕГЕНДА О ПИГМАЛИОНЕ И ГАЛАТЕИ На Кипре жил царь. Звали его Пигмалион. Был он человеком творческим и, в свободное от царских хлопот время, ваял из камня скульптуры. Однажды скульптура прекрасной девушки так удалась ему, что как живая смотрела на него белоснежная холодная дева. И влюбился Пигмалион в творение рук своих. Нарек он статую Галатея, что переводится, как молочная богиня, так как высечена она была из белого мрамора. Не мог встретить в реальной жизни бедный царь девушки похожей на свою мраморную возлюбленную. И взмолился он богам, просил оживить бесчувственный мрамор. Но боги лишь посмеялись над глупым царем. Только Афродита, покровительница острова сжалилась над бедолагой Пигмалионом. Однажды, вернувшись в царские покои, вместо мраморного изваяния увидел он молодую прекрасную девушку. — Кто ты? — удивился царь — Я — твоя Галатея! Ни ужели не признал ты меня, любимый мой! Пал на колени царь. Не мог он поверить своему счастью. Стал целовать он теплые ладони прекрасной Галатеи и конечно, сразу же сделал ей предложение. Прекрасная дева родила царю двух дочек. Старшую из них они назвали величественным именем Пафос, которое в те далекие времена давали только девочкам царского рода. Когда она выросла, превратилась в красавицу и умницу. И женился на ней герой Троянской войны Кинир. И построил он в честь своей обожаемой супруги прекрасный город Пафос. А в нем, 100-зальное святилище, посвященное Афродите, благодаря которой стал возможен союз Пигмалиона и Галатеи и рождение их дочерей.

СВЯТИЛИЩЕ АФРОДИТЫ было впервые раскопано в 1887 году специалистами исследовательского фонда Кипра. Часть из найденных артефактов была переправлена в Британский музей.

Большое количество кипрских легенд и мифов обращено к богам горы Олимп. И каждый знает о главном и великом среди остальных богов, покорители грома и молнии — Зевсе. О нем по устам бродит много рассказов, но одна легенда показывает нам как важно быть открытым и добрым человеком. ГОСТЕПРИИМСТВА ЩЕДРАЯ ДУША. ЛЕГЕНДА О ЗЕВСЕ В стародавние времена, когда Боги жили рядом с людьми, на вершине горы Олимп была резиденция Зевса-громовержца. Любил Зевс обратиться в добро-молодца и гулять по острову. Все были рады молодому красавцу, не догадываясь, что перед ними сам Зевс, наперебой киприоты зазывали в свои дома желанного гостя. Кормили, поили, на ночлег мягкие перины стелили.

Хвастался Зевс среди богов-олимпийцев, какие гостеприимные люди на Кипре живут, как встречают его радушно. Тогда мудрая Гера посмеялась над своим мужем-простаком. — Конечно, молодому, богатому мужчине каждый рад будет, обратись в старца нищего, посмотришь, нужен ли ты людям — сказала Гера. Призадумался Зевс. Обратился он в старца, больного, нищего и спустился с Олимпа к людям. Злыми оказались те, кто еще вчера был к нему так добр. Кто просто захлопывал дверь, видя убогого старика, а кто и камнем кидал вослед. Разозлился Зевс не на шутку. «Ах, вот какие двуличные вы, островитяне!» — подумал всемогущий Зевс. Вернусь на Олимп, спалю остров молниями, нашлю на них громы страшные. Но тут в конце дороги заметил он лачугу. На пороге сидели два старичка, муж и жена. С улыбкой приветствовали они путника, позвали в дом. Угостили не хитрым угощением, водицей родниковой, да краюхой хлеба. Предложили свою постель путнику, отдохнуть, ибо только одна скромная лежанка была в бедной лачуге. Отлегло с души у Зевса. Не такие уж плохие киприоты! Обратился он в свое божественное обличие. — За доброту вашу, старики, помилую я киприотов. И любое ваше желание исполню! — Одного только мы желали бы. Не расставаться никогда, даже после смерти. Исполнил Зевс свое обещание. Когда пришло время старикам умирать, заснули они в объятиях друг друга и превратил их Зевс в оливковое дерево. Переплетен узлами ствол векового исполина. Как будто в объятиях друг друга стоят два человека. Еще много легенд хранит маленький остров. Каждая из них — драгоценный самоцвет в короне истории Кипра и ключ, для понимания характеров островитян. Каждое сказание несет в себе поучающий урок, характер тех времен, а также четкое осознание того, что киприоты уважают и ценят историю своего родного края.

ХРАМ РОЖДЕСТВА ХРИСТОВА, несмотря на многочисленные набеги, не был разрушен и считается наиболее хорошо сохранившимся храмом в Палестине.

ВИФЛЕЕМ Храм Рождества Христова в Вифлееме — одна из двух самых великих святынь христианского мира. Он построен на том самом месте, где родился Спаситель мира. Храм над пещерой Рождества начала строить святая царица Елена в 330 году, а закончил в 6 веке император Юстиниан. Святой Вертеп Рождества — подземный храм базилики 12 м длиной и 4 м шириной. Под престолом находится Звезда, по кругу которой написано: «Здесь от Девы Марии родился Иисус Христос». ИЕРУСАЛИМ Несомненно, сердцем Святой Земли является Иерусалим. Именно здесь находятся главные святыни всего христианского мира. Здесь совершился искупительный подвиг Христа Спасителя. С этим городом связано множество пророчеств и обетований Ветхого и Нового Заветов. Первое, что стремится сделать каждый паломник, прибывший на Святую Землю — покло-

ниться главной святыне христианского мира — Гробу Господню. На территории Храма Гроба Господня расположено несколько действующих монастырей. Храм разделен между шестью конфессиями христианской церкви, каждой из которых выделены свои приделы и часы для молитв. Во времена Христа это место находилось за пределами города. После разрушения Иерусалима римлянами здесь были построены языческие капища.

ХРАМ ГРОБА ГОСПОДНЯ — это огромный архитектурный комплекс, включающий Голгофу с местом Распятия, Кувуклию с Гробом Спасителя, Кафоликон (соборный храм), подземный храм Обретения Животворящего Креста, храм святой равноапостольной Елены и несколько других приделов.

/ путешествие / И только в IV веке, в годы правления святого императора Константина, когда гонения на христиан прекратились, святая равноапостольная царица Елена, разрушив капища идолопоклонников, нашла Святой Гроб Господень, место распятия Спасителя, обрела древо Животворящего Креста. Возведение храма в честь Воскресения Христова продолжалось 10 лет. При входе в Храм находится Камень Помазания, на который было положено тело Спасителя. Под Голгофой находится придел Адама, который, по преданию, был здесь погребен. За стеклом видна скала с образовавшейся в ней расселиной. Раскол в скале произошел в час Крестной смерти Спасителя. Видно, что скала расколота против биологических слоев. Перед Гробом Господним — придел Ангела, где сидел ангел, возвестивший о воскресении. Эйн Карем — западная окраина Иерусалима. С этим местом связаны два важных события: рождение Иоанна Крестителя и встреча Девы Марии с Елизаветой, матерью Иоанна Крестителя, после Благовещения. В Эйн Кареме расположен русский Горненский женский монастырь, основанный в 1871 году. Севернее Гефсиманского сада находится православная церковь Успения с гробницей Богородицы, построенная в 12 веке на месте, где в 326 году св. Елена воздвигла первую церковь. Здесь также находятся гробницы родителей Богородицы Иоакима и Анны и Иосифа Обручника. В самой нижней части храма стоит гробница, в которой апостолы похоронили Деву Марию. Она в теле была взята на небо, поэтому после вскрытия гробницы в ней были найдены только пояс и погребальные пелены. На Елеоне стоит русский храм, посвященный св. Марии Магдалине. Он построен императором Александром III. Здесь находятся мощи препмч. Елизаветы и инокини Варвары. Также здесь находится чудотворный образ Божией Матери «Гефсиманская Одигитрия». Эту икону в 1939 году подарил обители митрополит Гор Ливанских Илия, которому трижды являлись святые великомученицы Екатерина и Варвара и говорили, что Матерь Божия просит отдать Ее икону в Палестину и что там она должна оставаться. В Ливане икона прославилась многими чудесами. Икона была совершенно черной и потемневшей от времени. Как только икона прибыла в Гефсиманию и отслужили молебен, исцелился смертельно больной священник обители, а на следующий день икона чудесным образом обновилась.

ГЕФСИМАНИЯ Здесь расположен Гефсиманский сад — в настоящее время небольшой сад, место моления Иисуса Христа в ночь ареста (Мф. 26:36– 57; Мк. 14:32–53; Лк. 22:39–53; Ин. 18:1–13). Здесь растут восемь очень древних олив, возраст которых, по некоторым данным, превышает 2000 лет.

ВИА ДОЛОРОСА («ПУТЬ СКОРБИ») — важный маршрут паломника в Иерусалиме. Это улица, по которой шел Иисус Христос к Голгофе. Здесь находятся 9 из 14 остановок Крестного пути Христа. (Последние пять остановок находятся на территории Храма Гроба Господня.).

РЕКА ИОРДАН Главным образом, Иордан связан с проповедью Иоанна Крестителя и с Крещением Спасителя. Место Крещения Господня — Вифавар — находится напротив Иерихона. Здесь учил и крестил народ святой Иоанн Предтеча. Это место является пограничной зоной с Иорданией, вход туда часто закрыт. Погружаются в священные воды Иордана сейчас в Галилее — в специально оборудованном для этого месте, называемом Иарденит.

На вершине Елеона находится место Вознесения Спасителя в 40-й день после Воскресения. В 12 веке христианский храм превратили в мечеть. Сейчас здесь небольшая часовня, внутри которой находится камень, на котором в момент Вознесения остался отпечаток стопы Спасителя. Христианское богослужение здесь совершается только на праздник Вознесения Господня. Неподалеку стоит Спасо-Вознесенский монастырь и колокольня «Русская свеча» (самое высокое сооружение в Иерусалиме!) Справа от входа в собор — камень с того места, на котором стояла Божия Матерь во время Вознесения Христова. За алтарем Вознесенского храма — часовня, построенная на месте древней церкви. СВЯТЫЕ МЕСТА ИЗРАИЛЯ И ПАЛЕСТИНЫ

ИЕРИХОН Иерихон — один из самых древних городов мира. Здесь есть места, связанные с пророками Ильей и Елисеем. Источник, воды которого сделал пригодными для питья пророк Елисей, сохранился и поныне. Современная Иерихонская дорога, соединяющая Иерусалим с Иерихоном, проходит по тому же пути, что и во времена Спасителя. Известное Евангельское событие — встреча Господа с Закхеем — произошло тоже в Иерихоне. Закхей был очень богатым человеком, начальником сборщиков налогов для римлян. Будучи грешником, но движимый внутренней потребностью в духовном возрождении, он настолько захотел увидеть Христа, что влез на дерево. Господь, проходя мимо знал, какой перелом произошел в душе Закхея и сказал ему: «Закхей! Сойди скорее, ибо сегодня мне надобно быть у тебя в доме». Дерево Закхея, на которое он влез, можно увидеть во дворе греческого храма, посвященного пророку Елисею.

МОНАСТЫРЬ ИСКУШЕНИЯ — православный греческий мужской монастырь, расположен на горе на окраине Иерихона. Здесь место искушения Иисуса Христа дьяволом. Главные святыни монастыря — пещера, где по преданию молился Христос, и камень, на котором сидел Господь. В обители уже 30 лет живет единственный пожилой монах с помощником. Гора становится настоящим испытанием для приходящих сюда иноков. Подъем на гору крайне сложный.

ГАЛИЛЕЯ Галилея — самая цветущая и красивая часть Святой Земли. Здесь Господь собрал своих учеников, учил и совершил большинство чудес. Кроме Иуды Искариота, который был родом из Иудеи, все остальные апостолы были галилеянами. Израильский город Назарет — одна из самых значимых для христианства святынь. В Назарете Архангел Гавриил принeс благую весть Деве Марии, здесь Спаситель жил 30 лет до Своего вступления на открытое служение. Сейчас на месте дома детства Спасителя стоит католический храм Благовещения, а на источнике воды, из которого черпала воду Дева Мария, построен православный храм Архангела Гавриила. Кана Галилейская — место, где Господь сотворил первое чудо, претворив воду в вино, а позднее исцелил сына царедворца, сказав ему: «Иди, сын твой здоров» (Ин.4:46–54). Православный храм, освященный в 1886 году в честь великомученика Георгия Победоносца, был построен на средства Императорского православного палестинского общества. входа в храм находится камень, привезенный из Абхазии с места мученической кончины апостола Симона. Гора Фавор. В настоящее время на вершине Фавора соседствуют два монастыря: православный и католический. Православная обитель была возобновлена здесь в XIX веке архимандритом Иринархом, учеником преподобного Паисия Величковского. В храме под стеклом находится камень с самой вершины горы, на котором, по преданию, стоял Господь во время Преображения. Также здесь находится чудотворный образ Пресвятой Богородицы «Неувядаемый цвет». Эта простая напечатанная на газетной бумаге икона прославилась многими исцелениями. В день православного празднования Преображения Господня (19 августа) каждый год на небе над горой Фавор даже в ясную погоду появляется облако. Оно спускается на православный храм, покрывая и храм, и людей, находящихся в нeм. Монастырь преп. Георгия Хозевита стоит в ущелье Вади-Кельт. Когда-то здесь было много зелени, во что сейчас трудно поверить, взирая на суровые голые скалы. Обитель находится рядом с пещерой, в которой Пророк Илия скрывался три года и шесть месяцев, питаясь пищей, которую ему приносил ворон. В середине 20 века в обители подвизался удивительный подвижник — преподобный Иоанн Румын (1913–1960). Его мощи и одежда абсолютно нетленны. Сейчас они почивают в одном из монастырских храмов в стеклянной раке. Монастырь св. Герасима Иорданского — основан св. Герасимом в 5 веке. Житие его примечательно историей о том, как святой вылечил льва, который потом всю жизнь кротко служил ему. На иконах преподобного Герасима изображают со львом. В этой обители подвизался преподобный Зосима, встретивший в пустыне преподобную Марию Египетскую. При входе в монастырь слева расположен небольшой пещерный храм, в котором почивают мощи мучеников и чудотворная фреска-икона Божией Матери Млекопитательница. По преданию, в этой пещере жило Святой Семейство по пути в Египет. Город Лидда — родина Георгия Победоносца. Святой Георгий был римским воином и пострадал в Никомидии в начале 4 века. Мощи его перенесли на родину в Лидду. Гробница находится в крипте арабского православного храма.
