MARC ELLIOT - FEBRUARY COVER ARTIST RAPPER, D E T RO I T, M I “If I could sum Mactunes Magazine up in a few words I’d label it “creative, courageous, and most of all special”. It taps in to a huge part of a multi- billion-dollar industry and shines a light on the roots of where any up and coming star is born. It gives hope to those who otherwise wouldn’t have an outlet to be discovered by the masses. Being apart of the February cover issue is a huge part of my career as an artist. I will always look back at this experience as something of a revelation to where I’m headed. This is more than just an Independent magazine; it’s a lifestyle brand. You can tell that everyone involved with Mactunes Magazine is dedicated to finding new talent from around the world and giving them a chance to showcase there knowledge, wisdom, and enchantment in such a hardboiled industry that we as artist all aspire to captivate. ! When I was approached to do the cover of the February issue I couldn’t think of anything better for me than speaking on love and music. It’s what I breathe and bleed everyday, love of music. Speaking with Mrs. C Renee Mangum was as easy going as it comes. As an interviewer and a person she’s down to earth, polite and aggressive in all the right aspects of her respective craft. You can feel her passion as if she herself were an artist. Mactunes Magazine is a great model for any independent subscriber as it points you in all the right directions no matter what role you aspire to play in the entertainment industry. The sky is the limit with Mactunes Magazine. #Salute”
J. REU Jacob Reuben Marchand (Born June 4, 1987), Better Known by his stage name J.Reu, is an American Rapper and Singer, as well as a producer, songwriter and director. Born in New Orleans, He made his performance debut on the 2006 Best Buy Retail Road Show after creating the Christmas jingle for Best Buy TV and Radio 2006 winter ad campaign. Born in 1987, to parents Florence and Paul Marchand. A year later his father left the scene and never returned. Leaving his mother to be a single parent. Jacob Reuben recorded his first record at the age of 5 with the New Orleans Children's Choir singing the "Our Fathers Prayer" also known as the "Lord's Prayer". After struggling in New Orleans and surrounding areas for some years his mother decided to move to Huntsville, Al. Jacob's mother enrolled him in piano, trumpet, violin and drum lessons. His mother who was an established poet started taking him on tours with her where he would recite the "I have a dream" speech by Dr. Martin Luther King. His mother was preparing him to be in front of large crowds of people at one time. When he was 11 years old he wrote his first rap. It was then that he realized a career in music is what he would grow up to pursue. After releasing several projects through his school and recording in home studios. Jacob decided to take his music to a real studio, it was there that he recorded the project "Changing the Game" which was very successful in the local Huntsville, Al area.!
Changing the Game (2004-2005) The lead single "When I think about you" features Dawn Forbes and Robert Pressley who is a member of the group "Committed" winners of the NBC hit show "The Sing Off". This compilation of quality singing & raps was the break through moment for Jacob. The studio album was recorded 18 original songs and 1 bonus remix track at Grace Note Productions. The album was released in 2005 and then digitally rereleased on September 11, 2011. The Best Buy Jingle and Tour In 2005 J.Reu was just an employee of Best Buy while he was going to college. While there at morning store meetings he was asked by the store managers to freestyle about the stores previous work day statistics. He ask the store managers to sponsor studio time to record a jingle they agreed and he recorded three tracks. He and another rapper from an Ohio Best Buy store named Jake Rockswell started creating a serious marketing buzz behind the best buy raps and they were chosen for the Best Buy Tour. Following the tour Best Buy decided to send footage from the tour to every store so the employees could see. Since then random Best Buy Employees have taken it upon themselves to rap about Best Buy in the form of video freestyles and actual music videos. Jake Rockswell and J.Reu paved the way for this style of marketing and musical choice.
Huggz & Kissez (2009-2010) In December 2009 J.Reu started recording songs after being in a relationship that ended sour. The songs recorded were talking about this relationship and similar topics along with some club records. The songs started mixing well and a release date was set for Valentines Day February 14, 2010. The mixtape became a top download onDatpiff.com!on the date of the release. WiLL Rap 4 Beatz (2011-Present) During the month of January 2012, J.Reu returned after a brief hiatus from the music scene with a new single "Straight To The Bank". The song was leaked months before with an unofficial video which became viral in 2011. J.Reu Recorded The entire Project in 9 days. The official Music Video and project was released on February 5, 2012. The LP was released on the Android Market as a free Download to jump start to preparations for the "Welcome To J.Reusalem" Ep which is to be released the fall of 2012.! Welcome To J.Reusalem J.Reu is currently working on an EP entitled "Welcome To J.Reusalem" and he confirmed via Twitter that the 1980s rapper Daddy-O (musician) of the hip hop group Stetsasonic will be playing a major role in the success of the project. !"#$%&'() Creating good music is the motive for New York native artist Jeury San. The lyricist and vocalist from the Bronx have always had dreams of fame and the good life only seen on television. Having realized he had the skills along with the necessary drive and work ethic, he embarked on a musical journey. The artist put together his life experiences and wrote them on paper to be unleashed in the studio under dim lights and a microphone. From this came about his first project which he named “Emotions Untitled.” The debut LP was released September 27th, 2011. Moving into 2012, he continues to release new and exclusive music. He released his first mixtape “ShoeGazing On Amsterdam” February 23rd, 2012. More projects are set to be released in the coming months.

WORKING 4 U
BE YOUR OWN SPONSOR IT’S TAX TIME! Of course, everybody is balling during the first two months of the year. That is, until you’ve reached that level of success that requires you to pay taxes and not get refunds. But fortunately for some, there is a handy-dandy check that comes in either two weeks after filing or two days if you’re anxious. This is when cars are on “no money down” sales, furniture is “interest-free,” and all the hustling clothing stores have “buy 2, get 1 free.” But as an artist, try not to get caught up in what I call “tax time hype.” If you are reading this article, there is a good chance that you care about the future of your career. So here is my two cents: Invest and Save. As an independent artist, I’m sure you’ve realized that people are not handing out much money to fund your career. You have to be your own investor. It’s true what they say: It takes money to make money. If you are in line to receive your refund check, don’t think about the Jordan’s you want and the Cadillac of your dreams. You should be thinking about the cost of studio time, production, engineering, photo shoots, possible grand performances, etc. Use your money wisely. Think about how that extra money can help you reach your music goals. Personally, I never plan things from money that is not in my hand already, even if I am expecting it. This way, if any extra money does come my way, it’s not money that I’m living off of and can use it how I please. Steal my mindset if you will. If you are not planning your life around this expected tax return, when it comes, you will be able to make that money work for you. Invest it into that studio equipment you NEED. Invest it in those vocal lessons you NEED. Invest it in the merchandise you NEED. Notice the emphasis on NEED. Do not go crazy just because you see a few more zero’s than you’re used to having at one time. No need to buy new amps if the ones you have work just fine. No need to buy that piece of bling you’ve had your eye on. Be smart; don’t waste your money on foolishness or unnecessary products. Use it wisely and make it stretch for you. You’d be surprised how far your few dollars can take you if you do your research and don’t jump at the first “deal” you see.
Along with investing, you most definitely need to save your money. The two go hand-in-hand. If you take half of your money and invest it, put the other half in a savings account. Some savings accounts pay nice monthly interest. Do some research on local banks as well as national banks and see where you can get the biggest bang for you buck. Saving your money is very important as an indie artist. There will be amazing opportunities that come, but you have to have your money right. What if I offered an opportunity to perform for Diddy, Jay Z, Rick Ross, 50 Cent, Kanye West, Dark Child, and Brian Michael Cox all at the same time and they are all looking to sign new acts? Along with performing, what if I could guarantee that you walk out with a deal? But you have to be able to produce $2,000 today. How many of you could do it? If you could with your own money, you’re awesome! If not, saving is something you need to start thinking about. The scenario I presented is not completely impossible, and if an opportunity comes along, you want to be ready. So, why not take some of that good ol’ tax return and store it away for unexpected expenses or opportunities? If you have a family like me, a lot of your money is already accounted for, so consider this tactic. When you get a little something extra, you can put it aside and use it sparingly. For example, if you take $2,000 and put it aside, that can be the start of your “music bank.” You could continue to add to it whenever possible and put yourself on a monthly budget of how much you can use from your music bank to take care of business. This way you will always have money set aside and you can use little money here and there to invest in your music. Also, this way you do not have to sacrifice the money that your family needs to live from. The point is, if you want to be successful, use your money wisely. Invest in yourself, save what you can, budget properly and be ready at all times. Don’t waste your time and money being a tax time baller!

There is a little man that lives in my head..he memorizes and writes down everything you say and compares it to what you said, when you say you love me..he says"she's lying" instead..I used to wonder what you did to offend him what caused all the pain to simmer the words that boil and spill over from within him.. did you ignore him as a child, tease, bully or hit him..why are his feelings so shattred and reflective of the hell damning his soul.. complete with it's own satan his demons shine the light on what he is and has never been. There is a little man that lives in my head..he replaces each hurdle I clear with one twice the size as the one before..he chuckles when I stumble..he cries when I laugh..he's happiest when I'm sad..feels accomplished when his words reach their mark..sees the hairline fracture in my heart..runs thru the fuel of my fears..striking a zippo praying for a spark..he says the meanest shit..I often ask him if he is serious..he stands firm and replies "I mean this shit people only gon respect you if you're mean as shit""they only gon take you serious if you show them how serious a problem with you can be..I would have been cut the world off if that was me".. Detroit wake up! People stand up! Prayers changes more than what meets the eyes so it's time to do what's right. Her music hinges on heartless dissonance and jolting hope. Tracy Cruzʼs music represents a vast, magnificent blend of polarities. We never get just one side of her; we get the kaleidoscope. Her song lyrics and production will unfailingly take you on a musical excursion, intended to resonate with all who experience it. As surely as it will crush your soul, it will also elate you. A vocal powerhouse, one that can speak a universal language, can only back up this aural diversity. Tracyʼs alluring voice is comprised of sounds old and new, resembling Jill Scottʼs throaty moans and Sarah Vaughanʼs lyrical accentuation, all while still managing to remain distinct. Born in Quezon City on the island of Luzon in the Philippines, Tracy grew up in an encouraging household where she watched with eyes of wonder as her mother and grandmother serenaded around the house. As a little girl, she recounts, “They looked so happy and full of life. The joy was contagious, so it was a natural calling for me to join in and sing.” In admiration, her grandfathers
observed her budding talent and encouraged her to pursue further by offering her money to sing. Tracyʼs parents later enrolled her in piano, singing, and saxophone lessons. Her first vocal coach was Greg Farbizio of Darrell Lefflerʼs Academy of Music. With the incredible boost from her family and coach Greg Farbizio, Tracy traveled across the United States by the age of twelve, competing in competitions and bringing home trophies. With a vocal range that stretched from unbelievable lows to soprano highs, a refined tonal quality and a few scribbles in her notebook emerged. Without forgetting her indigenous roots, the singer developed musical mannerisms that were influenced by Filipino songwriting styles. The fearless admittance to thriving passion in Filipino ballads was something Tracy wanted to revitalize in her lyrics. That Tracy was influenced by her vocal coach – Ledisi – is obvious too. Oftentimes, she approached her voice as a melodic vehicle that interpreted the Word of God. With unfettered freedom and full self- expression, she discovered memorable ways of coloring church songs with rich meaning. Audiences often fell to their knees in response. Tracy humbly responds, “Itʼs not me who is singing; it is God moving through me.” With the guidance of Ledisiʼs unapologetic, freewheeling style, Tracy Cruz soon gained the confidence to “step out” and touch a wider audience. As seminal traces of lyrical contemplation emerged in her book, Tracy met pianist Allen Ross in the gospel choir at San Jose State University. She notes, “I won his heart by reading him poetry from my book after practice, far after everyone left the building.” Who would have known that the one they call “The Man with Perfect Pitch” and the “Little Woman with the Big Voice” would evolve and soon conceive of two children along with three musical creations. The evolution of Tracy Cruzʼs music is a testament of the highs and lows of her life. With warm welcoming, Tracy simply “lets us in.” Each album, each song, offers a glimpse into the different chapters in her life. In 2005, her EP entitled, Illuminate Love, featured Kanetic Source, former emcee of Ozomatli, and accumulated national recognition. Tracyʼs debut album, Feelʼosophy (2008), was awarded three Museʼs Muse Awards for “Best R&B CD Project of 2008”, “Best Lyrics Female”, and “Best R&B Single Female.” Acclaim from Feelʼosophy boosted Tracy's profile in the industry. She was able to share the stage with Apl. de Ap of the Black Eyed Peas, Sy Smith, Mark de Clive-Lowe, Martin Luther, Jaguar Wright, Latoya London, Zion I, Pep Love, Living Legends, Breakestra, The Bangerz, and Crown City Rockers.
“Music is so powerful to me. You can really touch someoneʼs life by the songs you create,” she says. Touching individuals from different corners of the world became apparent when she received a letter from Sacramento, California. As a result of hearing Struggle, a track off Illuminate Love, the writer expressed, “Your song moved me to tears. Your powerful song helped me let go of this pain Iʼve been hanging on to for so long.” As we travel outside the U.S., DJ Soulwede of Soulinterviews.com in Sweden remarked, “The vocals are brilliant! We are probably talking about the best Soul album this year so far! One of the best debut albums I have ever heard!" And we canʼt forget the United Kingdom. Fitzroy Da Buzzboy of The Soul Survivors Magazine trumpeted, "Every now and again America finds a diamond in the ruff, shining no brighter currently than Tracy Cruz, whose album "Feel'osophy" is undeniably a classic piece of musical magic.” By this time, Tracy knew that her global audience was anxiously waiting for her next project. Tracy and producer Allen Ross decided to stretch and re-conceptualize their sound while remaining true to Tracyʼs core artistry. In her upcoming album, Universoul Symphony, the duo flirt with indigenous, symphonic, and electronic sounds. Upon listening to Universoul Symphony, Tracyʼs recalibrated confidence is wildly apparent. The album unveils the struggles of being an independent artist, the joys of being loved, the hardships of todayʼs economy, and surviving in a world riddled with injustice. Yet, Tracy envelops all of it and re-fashions it in a beautiful light. Anyone would notice the subterranean depth that Tracy dared to dive into for Universoul Symphony. The production is lush with extravagant layers and unexpected instrumental choices. Best of all, the hypnotic backstage works perfectly with Tracyʼs upstage lyricism. This is not the Tracy we knew from the past. Yes, sheʼs bigger, badder, and wiser. But best of all, the mad scientist has explored her mystical experimentations and sheʼs not afraid to show her work. Conceptually, Universoul Symphony is a work of art that is undeniably truthful. It seems the balance of motherhood, marriage, and songwriting has birthed a wonderland of love, courage, joy, pain and struggle. It is a tear-jerking, fist-pumping, two-stepping collage, a record you can play in the bedroom or at your summertime, backyard boogie.

Ambitious to say the least, Murda M4TT sets the bar very high for up and coming artists. Let’s check the stats: over 25,000 facebook likes, over 61,000 twitter followers, currently listed as number 4 on ReverbNation for his city, almost 120,000 fans on ReverbNation, and over 2 MILLION ReverbNation widget hits. Numbers don’t lie; this artist is hot! But
Photos by Jeff Sukes and Lawrence Namou
regardless of the numbers, Murda M4TT is one of the most humble, down to earth rappers who shows mad love to everyone he encounters. After talking with him, it’s clear that he is a force to be reckoned with and will not be shaken by anyone or anything. Matthew Sarhan was born in Detroit, Michigan, and was raised in the suburbs of Oak Park, Michigan.
After his parents’ unpleasant divorce, his mother moved away, leaving him with his father and siblings. As a teen, he had to take on the burden of helping with his siblings, and the pressure became too much to bear. He began to aggressively lash out, and got kicked out of schools, ruining his chances of being a successful high school soccer player. Eventually, he
MURDA M4TT
went from just being Matthew Sarhan to inmate number 134541. Between 2007 and 2010, he was in and out of jail as if by a revolving door. While incarcerated, he didn’t participate in many visitations with his family and girlfriend because he didn’t want them to see him in that element. So, he spent a lotof time writing rhymes on scrap paper in his cell. What started as something just to occupy his time ended up as the start of his career. He met other inmates who rapped, such as his good friend Ace, and started freestyling with them, which kept him out of trouble. From there, the blossoming began. He went from being inmate number 134541 to Murda M4TT. Despite his past, the name Murda M4TT does not mean what some may insinuate. The name developed because of the way he kills the microphone. But even so, his mannerism off the microphone speaks volumes for him as well. Unlike many artists who have had a taste of success, Murda M4TT does not suffer from what he called “Big Headed Syndrome” or the inability to show love and support. What sets him apart from many artists is the humility and genuine support he gives to others pursuing the same career path. At his shows, he makes it appoint to show love to the other artists performing. “Making music is not about being cocky, it’s about life,” Murda M4TT said. “Arrogance is the downfall of artists. I stay away from that.”
Another trait that sets Murda M4TT apart is the fact that he knows where he comes from and doesn’t try to pretend he’s someone else. He is from the suburbs, so he makes suburban music. He stays away from trying to “act hood” in his music, because that is not his upbringing. Because of his suburban roots and because he is a white rapper with the name Murda M4TT, there are definitely haters and doubters that he has encountered. But his response to these encounters is, “I don’t walk around with a chip on my shoulder because my music speaks for itself.” And that it does! His music is fewer punch lines, more lyrical. He rarely pauses and keeps going until he can’t spit anymore. His versatile style can appeal to anyone; he doesn’t aim to target one group of people. Being an independent artist, Murda M4TT has to face his share of obstacles just like everyone else. A big obstacle is the lack of funding that most indie artists face. Murda M4TT consumes every last dollar he makes just because he loves making good quality music. He understands the importance of investing in himself. Instead of waiting for a deal or investors, he makes things happen on his own. Another issue Murda M4TT faced early on in his career was the fear of performing. Many artists won’t admit to the nerves they experience before a show. Murda M4TT admits that he used to be terrified to get on stage. He even vomited at his first few shows. Eventually, he became comfortable on stage and progressed in his performance abilities.
MURDA M4TT
When Murda M4TT decided to take his rapping to a professional level, he linked up with his cousin and created The Family Records. At this point, he and his cousin are not on speaking terms because of an ordeal that transpired between them. Murda M4TT stated, “For family to slander your name or take credit for your work is inexcusable, especially when they have their own agenda while doing so.” Although The Family Records began because of a vision they both had, Murda M4TT rose above the ordeal and kept The Family Records alive. He is the sole proprietor of The Family Records LLC. He built a crew, including his long time friend Mikey G who has been around since the beginning. “We are a family of misfits who fit in together but nowhere else. We are a unit and will always stay together no matter what the situation.” Business is booming for The Family Records. So what’s the difference between Murda M4TT and Matthew Sarhan? Murda M4TT is the raw, rugged artist who can get crazy and buck on stage and spit bar after bar. Murda M4TT is live and on fire for any show, reflecting all of his emotions that go into his life and artistry. On the other hand, Matthew Sarhan is a laid back, calm 23-year-old guy who is quiet and reserved. In his personal
time, Matt is usually at home or with his girlfriend of five years, Trisha. If he’s not with the love of his life, he is with his family working and producing more music in his in-home studio. At times, he may also find himself enjoying pick-up games of soccer. If Matt were not rapping, he would most likely be trying to pursue a career playing soccer for a semi-pro team or pursue a degree in psychology and computer science. He would possibly even work as an astronomer. Of course, we at MacTunes are all about the indie movement. We wanted to know how Murda M4TT felt about the industry today. “I’m sick of turning on the local radio stations and hearing about Maybachs, millions, bricks and jewels. I can’t relate to that.” He feels that, aside from a few artists,
mainstream is nothing but fabricated, watered down BS music. He enjoys seeing the underdogs on the come up, especially those from Michigan. He boldly stated, “Michigan has some of the best music in the world.” Although he doesn’t care much for the major industry, if the right deal came along that allowed him to still operate under his own company and distribute globally, he would consider its terms. “Independent money is the best money because when it’s all said and done, no label will be taking a cut of what I’ve made. I’m not gonna sell my people out for a little money.” Murda M4TT has worked with numerous artists including Mikey G, A.c-e, Young Hitch, Brayal, Marc Elliot, Pryce and Stretch Money. “They are all humble, down to earth, real people that I like working with.” If he had it his way, he would also be working with the likes of Eminem and T.I. He said, “They are the best in my eyes.” He reminisced on listening to Eminem in the 4th grade and T.I. in the 7th grade. These became artists that he truly respected because he feels that they’ve

consistently proved themselves to be great. And although he’s been compared to Eminem time and time again, their styles are absolutely nothing alike. Murda M4TT described Eminem as an amazing storyteller, which is what makes him so great. Murda M4TT has a mixtape called Suburban Muzik Vol. 2 that drops March 30, 2012. He has been working on this project for about seven months and it is his favorite mixtape thus far. Its concept is simple: he represents for the suburbs. Murda M4TT is not a hood rapper and makes “real chillin’ music.” It’s also music that people with or without money can vibe to because
it’s a reflection of his inner thoughts, not the gimmicks of the hood. He will also be dropping a collaboration mixtape with Mikey G called The Beginnings End on April 25, 2012. His album The Takeover is also in the works and will be released sometime this year, so stay tuned! If you are someone who appreciates genuine Hip Hop, you should be listening to Murda M4TT. It’s not trap music; it’s real music. It’s very authentic and far from generic. It’s time to try something new, give something different a chance to shine. You won’t be disappointed.

Straight up from the steaming streets of the Big Apple, a young, ambitious rapper called Crosby just released his digital album "New York Posterboy" online, available through the website http:// www.NewYorkPosterboy.com. The budding artist, also known alternatively as Crosmopolitan and Clockwork Cros, was born in Bellevue to a noted multidisciplinary artist couple from the East Village. From an early age, Crosby became a public figure; he appeared in promo breaks for MTV, fashion photographs by Steven Klein and Tom Munroe and spreads in L'Uomo Vogue, Soma and Pop; posters for the Winter XGames; music videos by Spike Jonez, Jim Spring, Micheal Gondry and R. Kern and an album cover for Cop Shoot Cop's "Ask Questions Later". He interned at Def Jam, worked at Jeffrey Dietch Projects and for 5
years Crosby produced the multi-artist showcase Hip Hop Howl for the Howl! Festival in the East Village, while also bringing that troupe to the SXSW Festival 3 years running. Currently, Crosby directs music videos for his company Photo-POW and is also the visual artist behind all the cover art and web design for Swizz Beatz' weekly series Monster Mondays. Crosby has built a vast reservoir of musical material in collaboration with a host of emerging local talent and is now poised to take Gotham by storm with a series of solo album releases, one per month for the next several months, of which "New York Posterboy" is the first. The record is unified by a series of sketches placed within none other than the newsroom of Murdoch's flagship and New York's most popular newpaper, the Post, as a cub reporter that
reminds me of my younger self convinces his editor to allow him to break the story of Crosby's splash into the NYC music biz. Using industry beats and a wide range of sampled sounds, Crosby's aural montages express postmodern sensory overload and the funky syncopation of the life of a native New Yorker. Songs such as "The Wait is Ova", "Born in the City" and "Museum Music" show a hip intensity and cultural savvy in his poetry and delivery. Though this is a Hip Hop mixtape, it reminds this pundit of the highly entertaining, hyperkinetic sound of one of his favorite rock records from back in the day: The Mothers of Invention's "Freak Out." His future releases promise to be even more eclectic and innovative. Press and Media Inquiries: TimelessMachine@gmail.com
YUNG J KILLA
Yung J-Killa is an artist that is of high respect, and in the studio he tries to make things that are done the right way. He will put out a lot of material that is in use for a younger crowd, and also an older crowd. His words just lead to something new in this industry. He is not some thug craving attention from the media or even people. In his words: TO UNDERSTAND IS TO LISTEN: AND TO LISTEN IS TO ACCEPT. So when there is a will there is a way, and he really feels he is about to make a change to many people that understand and hold him down. To actually make a big move, meaning he will grind until he can’t any more. Yung J- Killa said, “Make the best of your life and never change for anybody.”

JMAL THE SCHOLAR; the name given to the Detroit rapper by his musical colleagues, takes his title seriously. A long time friend gave the native Detroiter this name because of his lyrical versatility, content, and vocabulary. Inspired by and associated with the word usage of his musical idol Tupac Shakur, JMAL THE SCHOLAR took this compliment to heart and forever strives to embody the true meaning of a revolutionary emcee. Tupac touched the heart of the listener with raw emotion. Wrong or right, he spoke from the heart and not always just to entertain. This is the core of JMAL's music. Purpose. He began to write and rap at age 9 and in the 3rd grade, was given a poetry assignment for which he received an A+. Like most kids would, he brought it home to show his mother, excited about the grade and not the words written. His mother read it and made such a big deal about the word play he considered it a premonition. His love for music grew as he progressed through puberty, honing his skills by rapping along with the albums his older brother brought home every pay day. He did this religiously in an effort to perfect his delivery. Back then, he didn’t understand the importance of hip hop and how it one day would consume his life. He
would often quit rapping and vow never to return to another studio. Still, he would find himself back in front of the microphone time after time. Realizing he has no other choice than music because of a higher calling to an infinite audience, he's taken his passion for hip hop to another level musically, lyrically, and mentally. Feeling like he is in too deep to quit, he is finally ready to appeal to an audience that craves true lyrical content over bass driven hip hop beats. He's often told by people who don't like or listen to rap music that they love his sound. One reason being the noticeable lack of profanity. Another is the music behind his words from mostly Rue Wade; with other selections from Profit and DJ Swift. Also, having mothers tell him his music is something they allow their children to listen to proves he'll one day cater to a much larger audience than most. When one possesses a large vocabulary, curse words become only a guilty pleasure for the lyricist and have a much greater effect. His music is based on his life; things he loves, hates, has done, seen, wants to do, will do, wishes he could do, and his perceptions of God.! His other musical influences include The WuTang Clan, Ras Kass, NAS, and the entire Motown catalogue along with the rest of the
black music from that generation.! Besides calling his music soulful hip hop, he generally prefers to let people describe it to him after they hear it. He feels his physical disadvantage is no detriment to his stage presence because he, in his own words, "sounds exactly like he does on wax". Currently signed to Carpe Diem Music Group, headed by Emmanuel Scheafe and John Hollywood in association with Famous Records Corporation, he released an album commercially in February 2010 entitled "SOCIAL STUDIES". Distributed by Universal, SOCIAL STUDIES is now available on iTunes, Amazon, Rhapsody, and just about anywhere else music can be downloaded. He is also a member of the Rhyme Cartel and has many performances throughout the metro Detroit area on his resume, dating from 2005 to 2007. The legendary music executive Al Bell sums it all up with this: "If we can't make him a star we shouldn't be in the business!" His music has been picked up by several internet stations and he has been a featured artist on Detroit Riot Radio. Thanks to his phenomenal publicist Rein Child, he is also beginning to establish a presence on major FM radio.
Check Out The Exclusive Interview With JMAL THE SCHOLAR... Describe your sound as a Hip Hop artist. I think my sound is eclectic. I make a point to make every song sound completely different from the last
What is it about Tupac that influenced you the most? Where do I begin...his passion, his honesty, his revolutionary tendencies, his choice of tracks, his cadence, his voice, his willingness to be flawed in public, his love for people and blacks in particular...So Many Tears, Who Do You Believe in....
Jmal The Scholar seems like a hefty title to live up to. How do you maintain that title? It was given to me and I feel it suits me perfectly. I don't think I could have another name. I'm just being myself and being myself personifies a scholarly emcee.
In the past, what caused you at times to leave music alone, even though you returned later? being frustrated about not being able to break away from the rest of the unknown artists, hearing the radio waves filled with artists I can rap circles around, shady people in radio, feeling like I'm too old, my physical challenges, tired of spending money on it, etc...
Where do you see your career headed? I truly feel like my music is going to change hip hop forever as well as help prevent war and famine worldwide. Really....
What has been your biggest challenge being an independent artist? Staying motivated despite receiving no recognition and spending endless dollars chasing this pipe dream.
Many Hip Hop artists use profanity in every other line. How do you manage not to? !Curse words take away opportunities to say clever and creative things. Not using them often also gives more power to my curse words when I do choose to use them. Not cursing much multiplies my audience and appeal. My goal is to be a world wide super icon RapStar, not a neighborhood D-Boy rapper. Mothers let their children listen to me. I can be vividly descriptive and not swear a bit. I'm trying to SELL RECORDS. Private jets, hotel suites in Dubai, that's how I'm planning to live.
How important is it to you to write music strictly from the heart instead of from the fads of today's society? Music from the heart is timeless. It's the only way I know how to do it. I have my formula of course but I'll never be so stodgy I can't make a song that's faddish. That kind of stuff is fun.
What can we expect next from Jmal The Scholar? Videos, videos, videos....

Skeeters
Regina Every so often, an artist surfaces that commands our attention every time they minister through music and word. South Carolina native Regina Reneé Skeeters is such an artist. With a soaring voice, boundless energy, and unmovable faith, Regina is recognized as one of the most innovative, risktaking artists today. Often referred to as God’s Oracle of Worship,” Regina dedicated her life to the anointed delivery of gospel music at an early age. Born (August 2nd) to Jean Blain Skeeters and, the late Eugene Skeeters, Regina began to develop her gift of song while singing at Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church (in Conway S.C.) and with various groups well into her high school years. But it was during her college days at Benedict College in Columbia, SC that Regina blossomed and blazed new trails with her golden voice and undeniable writing ability. She was voted top alto vocalist at the National Collegiate Gospel Competition. She co-wrote, arranged and sang lead vocals on the soulful hit "Put All My Trust" for the Benedict College Gospel Choir's debut album (Say the Word) in 2000. The song was voted the Most Requested Song of 2001 on the nationally recognized inspirational radio station -Gospel 95.3 WFMV- in Columbia, South Carolina. She also co-wrote "Will You Be Ready" on Hymns of Preparation with national recording artist Terence Young. In October 2004, Regina released her debut album entitled “Breathe On Me” and
released the long-awaited EP “Relationship” in 2009. Regina has shared the stage with numerous well-renowned recording artists such as: Beverly Crawford, The Gatlin Brothers, Jonathan Nelson, Ashford and Simpson, BeBe Winans, CeCe Winans, Dorinda Clark-Cole, Tonéx, Kim Burrell, J. Moss, Ricky Dillard, Donald Lawrence, the late Olanda Draper and many more. From motivational speaking to her delivery of soulstirring song, God has allowed Regina to travel across the country nationally and internationally, relaying the message of strength and hope through the Gospel of Jesus Christ. When not singing, Regina is still ministering through charity. She is the founder of “Blend Out,” a non-profit organization for the youth that focuses on low self-esteem, peer-pressure and abstinence, Regina continues to make a profound difference in the lives of people. Regina is also an actress in her on right.
