Welcome one and all to the 2016 Cape to Cape MTB. We hope that you have a great time as we strive to raise the bar once again this year and continue to improve the experience for all riders and in particular make life easy for your support crews of families, friends and mates. One of the highlights of Cape to Cape MTB is not only the friendship out on the trails between the riders, but also the wonderful engagement between the riders and the race officials and event team. We thank everyone for partaking in the spirit of Cape to Cape MTB and encourage you to continue along this path at the 2016 event.
Over the past twelve months we have expanded our broadcast strategy significantly. As well as an exclusive Australian partnership with SBS ONE, we have also screened the Cape to Cape MTB 2015 documentary on multiple occasions on Fox Sports. From an international perspective we have had incredible success, with some 132 countries programming the show, with a reach of around 500 million people! This increased profile is reflected in this year’s rider numbers, with a significant growth in interstate and international riders – so, a big welcome to all new riders this year and thank you to all of our trusted and true participants who are back again in 2016. Once again, an event like Cape to Cape MTB is not possible without the support of Tourism Western Australia and local government partners Shire of Augusta Margaret River and the City of Busselton. To our Major Partners, Shimano and Giant, thank you so much again for your wonderful support. To all our other event partners, we thank you for your support
and we ask all riders and participants to reach out and get behind these great businesses who making such an important commitment to our sport. We think our management group, event crew and volunteers are the best in the business – thanks guys, we really appreciate your passion, professionalism, commitment and positive attitude. YEAR TEN CELEBRATION – yes, in 2017, Cape to Cape MTB is celebrating its tenth event!! Who would have thought that from humble beginnings in 2008, that our event would grow to become the biggest and best MTB stage race in the Asia/Pacific region and be celebrating ten years!! Well, stand-by, because we have some major announcements this week about the Year Ten Cape to Cape MTB that will blow you away!! Good luck to all riders, stay safe and remember, you are all champions!! Chris Heverin Jason Dover EVENT DIRECTORS

Message from the MINISTER 25–28 MAY 2017
Welcome to Western Australia’s spectacular South West region for the 2016 Cape to Cape MTB. Now in its ninth year, this popular event is recognised as one of Australasia’s biggest multi-stage endurance mountain bike races, attracting more than 1,300 elite and recreational riders. Over the next four days, local, national and international competitors will race 220km from Augusta’s Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse to the Dunsborough Country Club, taking in Hamelin Bay and Margaret River on the way. The race’s four stages showcase the South West’s beautiful scenery including its famous surfing beaches, vineyards, forests, wildflowers and rugged coastline. The Cape to Cape MTB is proudly supported by the State Government through Tourism WA’s Regional Events Program. The program is one of many initiatives made possible by Royalties for Regions to help grow Western Australia’s regional areas into thriving and sustainable communities. Tourism is a vital industry for regional Western Australia. Last financial year, visitors spent $9.6 billion in the State, including $4.5 billion in regional areas. The State Government’s goal is to see the contribution of regional tourism increase to $4.75 billion by 2020. Events are a key part of this strategy because they provide significant economic, social and cultural benefits to regional communities, making them exciting places to visit as well as great places to live. Congratulations to the organisers and volunteers involved with the Cape to Cape MTB, and best of luck to all the riders.

GETTING THERE AND PARKING
Changing it up for 2016, the Sundown Shootout will move away from the traditional trail combinations that utilised the end half of Whoop Whoop. Instead, we’ll see riders sprinting down the Happy Endings trail before popping over the fire road into what can only be described as an epic piece of trail, the Paper Trail. Putting technical skills to the challenge, riders will have to negotiate multiple rock gardens, tight turns and a few jumps before being crowned the 2016 Sundown Shootout Champion. The technical aspects of Paper Trail will allow riders to put on a good show for spectators whether it is a display of pure speed, a display of air time, or in the case of Sam Hill, a display of both. The 2016 Sundown Shootout is not one to be missed! Racing will kick off from 4:30pm on Friday 21st October
Entry to the Sundown Shootout will be a right hand turn off Carters Road in to the bottom end of The Pines just after crossing the creek bridge. This turn will be signposted and further parking directions will also be signposted from this point onwards. Spectators are able to access the whole course by foot after parking in the general parking area located on Baker Road and walking East until reaching the start line where the Happy Endings trail crosses Baker Road. Please respect all signage that has been put in to place and always follow the directions of our Parking Marshalls.

FINISH - HAMELIN BAY Rider Brief 12.00 midday / Race Start 12.30pm
SPECTATOR POINTS 2015 HONOUR ROLL Start your day by dropping your rider in the drop-off zone so they can warm up, then find yourself a parking spot. Stroll down to the lighthouse, grab a coffee at the Lighthouse Café and soak in the atmosphere. Also, don’t forget to wish your rider (or riders) good luck! Point 1: First Corner of Race Watch the riders navigate the first turn of the race on the corner of Leeuwin Road and Skippy Rock Road before they ascend the first 3km climb up Skippy Rock Road. Point 2: Green Hill Road Descent – Experience the Speed! After the riders have begun the ascent head back to your car and drive back to Augusta on Leeuwin Road (please do not drive on Skippy Rock Road). Continue through Augusta and turn left onto Caves Road, then have your eyes peeled for Green Hill Road on your left. Continue on to Green Hill Road, park where the bitumen ends and take a stroll up to our marshal. Here you will see riders approaching a left hand turn at almost 60km/h as they descend Green Hill Road.

STAGE HIGHLIGHTS At the Cape to Cape MTB we feel like the highlight of Stage 1 is more about the scenery that riders will experience rather than the trails themselves. There is no denying that the Green Hill Road needs a speed trap and is by far a highlight of the stage but the roar of the ocean on Deepdene Beach is something else. Not many beaches in the world compare to the ones in WA and Deepdene is no exception, with vast views, pure white sand and magic blue water it is definitely one for the memory bank!
Stage 1 for 2016 receives the status quo treatment with very few to zero changes compared to the course used in previous years. While the tracks used are the same, the conditions experienced are never the same as the year, before thanks to Mother Nature. The weather conditions in the lead up to the Cape to Cape every year are always the determinant of the difficulty level of Stage 1 with so much of the course being comprised of a sandy base. With a start line at the extraordinary Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse in Augusta, be sure to check out the views as you roll out with over 1200 other competitors and up the first climb where the view seems endless! Riders are rewarded for climbing straight from the gun with a fast flowing descent down into the valley where the foliage is dense and the fire roads raw in nature. Cresting the famous Heartbreak Hill, a 1.8km steep sandy menace, riders are able to enjoy some fast, flowing course alignment as they head towards the coast. Most enjoyable in this section is the Green Hill Road descent where speeds of
STAGE 1 41km
60km/h can be clocked! Deepdene Beach is next on the radar where riders may experience the hardest 2kms of their life as they battle along the shoreline. Hopefully Mother Nature plays nice and the beach is rideable! Once off the beach and over the looming sand dune riders only have one real obstacle between themselves and the finish line. Aptly known as Hamstring Hill, riders will have to be careful not to do a Hammy as they get up the steep pinch in front of them! From here it is all smooth sailing in to the picturesque finish line location of Hamelin Bay. The sandy nature of Stage 1 offers a challenge most riders haven’t experienced a great deal of before but are ever keen to tackle, no matter how daunting Heartbreak Hill may be! In the 2015 edition we saw hot, calm conditions in the lead up to the event offering a beach in perfect condition but dry, soft, dusty climbs everywhere else. In 2014 we saw more stormy conditions in the lead up offering a soft, chopped up beach but damp, hard pack climbs elsewhere. What will 2016 bring?
FINISH
Point 3: Airborne at The Farm! Located just off the corner of Caves Road and Cosy Corner Road, spectators are advised to park on Cosy Corner Road where they will then see the grassy fields of The Farm on their right. Head to the crest of the paddock and watch the riders get some air time as they pass the 33km mark of the race! Once your rider/s pass, it’s time to head to the finish line!

SPECTATOR POINTS Unload your rider at the drop-off zone, then turn around and head North up Caves Road. Take a right into Sebbes Road and pull up at the Boranup Gallery. While the Cape to Cape MTB field struggles up the first road climb, get your day started by treating yourself to a coffee or breakfast, while deciding on Point A or Point B for spectating today! Point A – The Beach Life NOTE: Please do not attempt to reach this spectator point after 9:00am, as you will be driving in against the flow of riders on course. If you select ocean views you will need to ensure that you are in position by 9:00am, so don’t linger over coffee and cake for too long! Leave Boranup Gallery and continue North up Caves Road, then turn left onto Contos Road (keep an eye out for the Lake Cave signage). Drive past Contos Campground and continue down the hill on the unsealed road past Contos Springs. When you reach the bottom of the road at South Point, park in the turnaround loop (please be careful not to block the road) and walk 100m back up Contos Road. Here you will be able to view riders as they approach from the East pinging across the rocky limestone outcrops, before they drop onto Contos Road and begin the long climb up towards the campgrounds. This point is 31km into the course, so let the riders know they are past half-way! Please be mindful when leaving that the course follows Contos Road, so drive slowly and allow the riders plenty of room. Point B – Frolicking in the Forrest If you picked beautiful forest over ocean views turn right out of Boranup Gallery onto Caves Road, then take your first left onto Boranup Drive (unsealed). Drive South along Boranup Drive for ~1.5km until you see course signage. Park off to the side of the road and 12
A change of scenery from Stage 1 is well received by riders as they leave Hamelin Bay on the bitumen headed for the luscious loamy goodness of Boranup where they will experience trails such as Lord of the Rings, 2 Pints of Guinness and Sam Hill Descent. To use Race Director Jason Dover’s words, “Stage 2 we will tinker with again to get the best of the trails…” and riders can expect high stoke levels on Stage 2 in 2016!
enjoy the view of the riders darting through the singletrack that lies under the canopy of the towering Karri trees. By this point in time riders are 23km into the course and about to leave the singletrack and head down to the coast. Please be alert of riders on course when in this area, and take special care to preserve the flora.
STAGE 2 56km FINISH
Punching up the first bitumen climb of the day riders will jostle for position before entering some loamy fire road and singletrack goodness, including the Sam Hill Downhill, before popping out onto Caves Road. From here the exact alignment through Boranup will be a bit of a surprise for riders who will appreciate the fresh feel to the fresh feel to the stage.

The new singletrack alignments heading out of the limestone ridden Conto Springs used in 2015 will appear in the 2016 edition of the Cape to Cape MTB but the local trail fairies have been working hard! 2016 will have riders glowing through the area between Conto Springs and Voyager Winery as they tackle multiple new pieces of raw singletrack. Riders will have to be careful to save a few berries for the closing kilometres of Stage 2 as they enter Xanadu Wines. There is nothing worse than getting pipped on the line after almost 60kms of racing so riders will strap on their ‘Roadie’ legs for the 3km bitumen attack in to Xanadu Wines. Don’t stress if you do spend all your berries, lots of delicious food will be available courtesy of the excellent staff at Xanadu Wines!
STAGE HIGHLIGHTS The award for Stage Highlight of Day 2 goes to the trails in Boranup Forest as this place just has it all; fun flowing singletrack crafted from perfect grippy soil that winds around a magnificent Karri forest for 15km. It simply doesn’t get much better! An honourable mention goes to the Brozie Road descent however as it is a whole lot of fun going flat out, flying off the waterbars and pinging through the rocky sections at the bottom.

Point 2 – Grab a Coffee Once the field has passed through town spend some time at the Farmers Markets and exploring the shops along the main street as the riders zig-zag through the singletrack to the north of Margaret River. Just after 9:30am the riders will return to town (at the 44km mark of the course) before they tackle the final 14km out to the finish line at Colonial Brewery. The best place to catch them is from the deck outside the Hairy Marron Café, as they will pass only metres below! Point 3 – Grab a Beer Once your rider has passed the Hairy Marron head across to the finish line at Colonial Brewery by continuing North up Bussell Highway and turning right into Osmington Road. Pull up at the picnic tables in the beer garden and be a hero by having an icy cold Colonial ale waiting for your rider once they cross the line!
Stage 3 in 2015 was said to be the best Margaret River Special Stage alignment the Cape to Cape MTB has ever seen, with the inclusion of trails through the Pines, Wharncliffe Mill and South Carters. This year we can expect more of the same with some exciting new developments in the works for our Ten Year Anniversary in 2017, such as the inclusion of the re-developed Compartment 10 trails! Compartment 10 is the area of mainly natural bush situated in the bottom corner of Pines that includes trails such as Big Pine and the new Paper Trail. Huge amounts of planning have led to the approval of a whole new trail network in this area that will utilise existing trails such as the much loved Managers and the technical Rock and Root. This new trail network will feature heavily in future Cape to Cape events, much to the liking of riders! A 7km neutral roll out from Xanadu Wines will allow riders to enjoy the sights of the Margaret River Township as the avid spectators cheer them on.
Take the opportunity to enjoy a chat with your mates and take on some nutrition before the pace heats up on Carters Road after crossing the official start line. A right turn off Carters Road will see riders climb up to Wharncliffe Mill before heading across the creek line into the Pines where they will enjoy some new trails that link in to existing trails such as Return of the Jedi, Mr Nice, Ant Lou and many more! Saving the best of the pines to last, riders will get their stoke on as they exit the pines on the famous Big Pine trail before popping out on to Carters Road. Entering South Carters as the second phase of Stage 3 will see riders enjoy the marvellous collection of singletrack known as the Creek Trails before heading out on Mini Keenan towards the Hairy Marron. Next on the radar, after passing the Hairy Marron, is the 10 Mile Brook Trail as riders head towards the final destination of the day, Colonial Brewery. After so much singletrack loving be sure to take your bike to Bike Dr. to receive a wash and lube. Bike Dr. will be positioned at the finish line of each day, while bookings aren’t essential they are recommended.

FINISH - DUNSBOROUGH COUNTRY CLUB Rider Brief: 7.45am / Stage Start: 8:00am
Typically Stage 4 is the longest stage of the Cape to Cape MTBcoming in at around 64kms long but tends to be one of the fastest stages with big open roads and the odd piece of singletrack. The highlights of Stage 4 are said to be the rabbit warren of trails through Middle Earth and the flowing singletrack of Meelup.
SPECTATOR POINTS 2015 HONOUR ROLL Point 1: Winding and Vining From Colonial Brewery jump on Bussell Highway and head North. Just before you reach Metricup Road pull off and find a place to park. On the Eastern side of the road you will see the riders come out of the Churchview Estate vines and wind around the dam before they cross Bussell Highway. NOTE: please be very cautious when parking and on foot in this area, as this is a busy road with a high speed limit.

As with Stage 2, Stage 4 is proposed to remain relatively unchanged for 2016 until riders approach the final kilometres of the stage through Meelup and Dunsborough Country Club. Starting from the rear of Colonial Brewery, riders will start the day on a collection of fast, flowing gravel roads where big groups will form and riders can choose to ‘sit in’ or go for the attack! The collection of roads will take riders out to the coveted Middle Earth trails, a rabbit warren of trails that milk the creek line for all it is worth to offer riders maximum stoke factor through series of berms and trail features. After Middle Earth it is time for some respite as riders are given an opportunity to take on some nutrition and rest the upper
body as they travel along another mixture of roads toward Cape Naturaliste. With the nature of this stage, riders will want to find themselves some friends to help lift the pace and make the kilometres fly by! To finish the stage and event on a high, riders are treated to the playful, flowing nature of the Dunsborough MTB Skills Development Park situated within the Dunsborough Country Club. For 2016, the final alignment through this area is sure to excite riders as they fly through various singletracks including Fireys Descent and Dual Slalom Run. Crossing the finish line on the 18th Fairway be sure to grab your Finishers medal and a photo on the podium before enjoying the finish line activities and celebrating your achievement of completing the 2016 Cape to Cape MTB!
STAGE 4 56km
Point 1a: Church on Sunday If the crowd is too big at Churchview, consider heading around the corner onto Metricup Road. 100m up from Bussell Highway park off the road and watch the riders negotiate a steep slippery descent down onto the tarmac. Point 2: Clubs in the Country After your rider has passed, enjoy some country scenery as you drive up to Dunsborough. When you arrive at the Dunsborough Country Club follow the signs for event parking off Gibney Street. Park and walk up the fairway alongside the dual slalom track to see riders tackle this final piece of singletrack before they reach the finish line, then wander back down to congratulate your rider and soak in the festival atmosphere.

STAGE HIGHLIGHTS Let us know, we can’t decide! Middle Earth provides plenty of fun early on in the stage, with the fast clay based singletrack littered with berms and log rolls! Or; Tearing through Meelup down the fast Fireys Descent and the last dash through the Dual Slalom Run are a great way to finish up four days of riding.

JERSEY PROFILE Keep your eyes peeled for our Cape to Cape MTB category leader jerseys, worn by the leaders in the four categories over the course of the event. Category leaders are announced and jerseys presented at the conclusion of each day’s stage. Know where you’re placed in each stage by spotting one of our category leader jerseys: Yellow – Open Male Green – Master Male
WHO’s WHO these surf breaks is sure to give inspiration to weary legs as you power through the four stages of the Cape to Cape MTB. How do you add one of these to your riding kit? If you didn’t purchase one when completing your registration, you can order one from the Information Tent at the event.
Every year the Cape to Cape MTB attracts a formidable field of elite riders from across Australia and the world. When you attend the Cape to Cape MTB, our wonderful Weekend Warriors ride in the same field as Olympians, World and National Champions! All our Elite riders are super friendly so feel free to hit them up for a few tips! Be sure to head down to the Sundown Shootout to see the riders in action if you happen to miss them during the day!
Pink – Open Female Purple – Masters Female
But why should our category leaders have all the fun?
The Flying Females
Each year, we like to mix it up with our jersey and release a design with a distinctive south west flavour to it. Previous incarnations have seen our riders sporting cow patches, grapes and beer and this year we think we’ve outdone ourselves!
The recognition of female sport has been on the increase over the past few years and so has the level of competition seen between female athletes. At the Cape to Cape MTB our female athletes have been on the rise over the past few years also, increasing in field size as well as moving up in the overall standings.
Margaret River is famous world-wide for its incredible surf breaks and this year we’ve taken our inspiration from the shore. Our jersey features an incredible cresting wave, ready to crash with a thundering roar. The power, strength and consistency of
The Willo Medal BATTLE CONTINUES 2015 saw a nail biting finish to the Cape to Cape MTB where Kyle Ward moved into the overall lead on the final day after Mark Tupalski had led for the entire event. For many years there has been a direct correlation between the winner of Stage 1 and the Overall Winner in the Elite Men’s event, the last time this did not occur was back in 2009 where Rohin Adams won Stage 1 while the late James Williamson won the Overall. Will we see more change in 2016? With strong performances in stage races over the country in 2016, Kyle Ward
is looking to be on good form and will be hungry to defend his title of the meaningful Willo Medal. While Kyle has had strong performances he has also had strong competition coming from Trek rider Brendan Johnston who defended his 2015 National Marathon Championship earlier this year in Derby, Tasmania. With a field full of interstate talent we can’t forget our local challengers for the Willo Medal - Craig Cooke and Reece Tucknott, both of whom have experienced multiple podiums at previous editions of the Cape to Cape MTB. Will 2016 be the year that a local gets up for the win? Will we see an upset? Which stage will be the decider? Who are your bets on?
The 2015 edition saw Peta Mullens take charge of the race in a dominate fashion, taking a clean sweep of all 4 stages and landing herself a 43rd place overall! Mullens, a current and former National Champion in multiple forms of cycling as well as Athletics, has had a stellar 2016 season where she has competed all over the world. Stage racing suits Mullens who competed in 18 races in 24 days in the US where she won multiple sprints each day. Will she be victor again in 2016? 2016 Port to Port MTB champion Samara Sheppard proved that she too, also knows how to win stage races in style by claiming all 4 stages of the event held in Newcastle, NSW earlier this year. A kiwi at heart, Sheppard has a long history racing bikes both locally and internationally where she has had various successes. With a strong riding style, the battle between herself and Mullens will be one to watch!
BOODJIDUP RD MARGARET RIVER | WA 6285
With these big names and many more, the 2016 edition of the Cape to Cape MTB is sure to have a women’s race for the ages!

CAPE TO CAPE MTB AWARDS
Alison Ramm Ben Hogarth Brad Hamblett Juliet Plumb Pablo Toribio Peter Butt
The Cape to Cape MTB 2016 has a total prize pool of $18,000, making it one of the richest races of its kind in the country. Cash prizes are awarded to the top 5 Male and Female overall winners, Male and Female stage winners, Sundown Shootout Male, Female and Local winners plus we have a cash prize for the fastest Junior. The Masters categories don’t miss out either, with some incredible product prizes courtesy of Shimano and local producers of the Margaret River region up for grabs. The overall winner of the Cape to Cape MTB will be awarded the James Williamson medal. One of the first guys to sign up for the inaugural Cape to Cape MTB was 2008 World 24 Hour solo champion James Williamson. He certainly travelled west to “race”, winning the first two events and becoming the Cape to Cape MTB’s biggest advocate on the east coast. In those first couple of years James also developed a love for the craft beer scene in the south-west and thought it went perfectly with a hard days riding on the bike. Sadly James passed away at the 2010 Cape Epic in South Africa before our third event from a rare medical heart condition. In 2010 it was then decided that the overall winner of the Cape to Cape MTB would carry the name of James “Willo” Williamson – a true champion of Australian Mountain Biking and a friend of our event to be remembered by us all. Once again the overall winner of the Cape to Cape MTB in 2016 will be awarded the James Williamson Medal and will follow in the tyre marks of legendary names like Dan McConnell, Andy Blair, Lachie Norris, Mark Tupalski and reigning champion Kyle Ward.

THE BEACON AWARD
the south west trails master plan
The Beacon Award is passed on to the person considered to be the ‘shining light’ of the Cape to Cape MTB. Each year, event organisers and Award Ambassador Johnny Waddell identify one rider who most embodies the true spirit of our unique event. If you see anyone who does something extraordinary for another rider, has overcome a personal challenge to compete or you feel simply needs acknowledging, make sure you find Johnny or any member of the race management team to submit your nomination.
Over the last 9 years, we’ve seen a heap of trail system development in the South West around our event. We spoke to Cape to Cape MTB Race Director Jason Dover about the trails and what’s planned for the future.
There are also plans to formalise the trail networks of Middle Earth and South Carters, so we are hopeful the event can enjoy full access to these areas from next year onwards. Both of these trail systems when formalised will be a welcomed addition to the network of trails we will have access to in the future.
What IS the Master Plan?
How will the new trails integrate into the Cape to Cape MTB?
Westcycle, in conjunction with DPAW and other stakeholders, have been working on a trails masterplan for the South West. The plan to create a long term sustainable network and it’s now starting to come to fruition. The plan is all about building, developing and legalising trails to leave a legacy for all to enjoy long into the future.
The 2015 Beacon Award went to Boe Helm, the ultimate supporter. Set to race the Cape to Cape MTB, Boe unfortunately suffered a race-ending injury. Rather than head home and lick her wounds, Boe decided to feed bottles to everybody in the elite field to support their individual campaigns to take out the title.
What new trails are being planned? We were really hoping that the new Compartment 10 trails were going to be ready for the 2016 Cape to Cape MTB, however in the end they were held up by the rain and a little bit of red tape. These trails will be an amazing addition for 2017 and should be opened for riding by the end of November.
With the plans for year 10 Cape to Cape MTB involving 4 special stages (instead of the traditional point to point course), this will allow us to overdose on all of the new trail systems being built and formalised around Margaret River. Given all of the trails that are in development, the initial plan for year 10 is to start and finish each stage around Margaret River. Each stage will feature a unique alignment of a combination of these trails and allow us to get the best of the best trails into four very special stages. NOTE: If you want more information on the South West Master Plan, you can visit the Westcycle website where you can download a full copy. www.westcycle.org.au

MIND YOUR MANNERSRIDER ETIQUETTE A Few Simple Guidelines for Riding the Cape to Cape MTB With over 1,200 riders signed up for the 2016 Cape to Cape MTB, it is important that everyone follows some simple guidelines to ensure that every rider gets the maximum enjoyment from their ride. We have prepared a basic guide to mountain bike etiquette for those who are not familiar with mountain bike racing, or those who might just need a refresher! Always treat the trails like a road! If the trail is wide, stay to the left and pass on the right where possible.
Passing
Accidents on Course
1. If you catch a rider and want to pass them, let the rider know by calling out - suggestions are “rider behind please” or “when you are ready please”. Don’t forget to use your loud voice, if the rider in front of you does not hear a request, they will assume that you are happy to sit on their wheel and ride at their pace. So if you want to pass, make sure you are heard!
If a rider crashes in front of you, this is not an opportunity to pass them! Stop immediately and ask if they need assistance. The first rider on the scene of a crash is in charge of the situation and should remain with the injured rider as long as is necessary. If a serious injury occurs, ask the second rider on the scene to direct oncoming riders and send the third rider to the nearest communication point for assistance. Remember, if a rider is seriously injured do not move them, even if they are blocking the entire trail! Keep in mind that time considerations will always be given to those who stop and assist injured riders.
2. If a rider catches you and requests to pass, acknowledge their request and let them know when it is safe to do so, “after this corner” or “go on the right” are common calls. 3. When making a pass, let the rider you are passing know where you are going, eg, “on your right”. Some encouragement never goes astray either, a quick “you’re doing great” or “only 10kms to go!” always helps to lighten the mood. 4. If you are being passed, give the rider passing you as much room as possible without moving off the trail or compromising your safety. 5. If you cannot ride a section of trail, make sure the trail is clear for riders who can! If you stall on a hill, check behind you and clear the trail immediately so that you don’t block other riders. If you approach a jump or logover and do not feel confident tackling it, pull off to the side and go around it … don’t stop in front of it! The Cape to Cape MTB is a long race and there are plenty of opportunities to pass, so be patient! The course is designed to maximise passing, with sections of wide trail breaking up the singletrack, so a passing opportunity will never be far away. Be considerate as riders pass and consider that it is highly likely that you will be passed by a whippersnapper! There are some insanely fast female and juniors out there, so let your ego go and give them a cheer as they come flying past you!
26
The bottom line is: remember your sense of humour and a smile. At the end of the day (as awesome as it is) the Cape to Cape MTB is just a mountain bike race and you are here to enjoy it!
important ride information RIDER RACE PACKS All competitors are required to collect their rider race pack prior to the event. This pack will contain your timing plate, and seat post sticker, timing information and more. Rider pack collection will be open at The Common (Margaret’s Beach Resort) on Wednesday the 19th October, 2016 from 11:00am to 7:00pm. It is highly recommended that riders collect their packs on Wednesday so that your bike is set up correctly in advance and to avoid time delays Thursday morning at the beginning of Stage 1. Late rider race pack collection will be available on Thursday the 20th of October from 9:00am to 11:00am at the entrance to the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse.
START LINE STAGE 1 To alleviate the congestion of the mass start at Stage 1 we have continued our plan from 2015 on to 2016: •
Grid 1 – elite riders will start from the first grid which will be clearly marked by a black flag.
•
Grid 2 – directly behind the elite riders, this grid will be clearly marked by a blue flag. These are riders who have registered their special request for grid selection (only eligible for riders who finished in the Top 300 in a previous Cape to Cape MTB) or by special request prior to the event.
•
All other riders are required to self-seed themselves. Please be honest about your ability and place yourself accordingly, there are plenty of passing opportunities on our 223km course!
•
NOTE: No bikes will be permitted into the first two grids until after 11am.
DOTS AND FLAGS Similar to previous years, when you cross the Stage 1 finish line our amazing volunteers will place a coloured dot on your number plate. This dot indicates your starting wave for the remaining three stages. The colour of your dot is the wave you will be joining at the following day’s start line. Please find the corresponding coloured flag and use that as a marker for where you should be at the start line. If you encounter problems on Stage 1 (for example a mechanical) and believe that your finishing position does not represent your ability, please come to our Race HQ to discuss. Our aim is to have riders of similar abilities riding together for maximum enjoyment and to spread riders equally throughout the course!
START LINE STAGES 2 TO 4 At the start of Stages 2 through to 4 you will line up in your starting wave according to the colour of your dot. Please look for the coloured flags that represent your wave. Remember that it is not a race to the start line so please be patient. Each wave will be released in intervals to reduce congestion on course. More details on start waves and colour allocations are available from the information tent at the start and finish lines of each stage.

SERVICES and parking
Safety
Timing
The Cape to Cape MTB uses a number of roads (both bitumen and gravel) to link up the course. When riding on a road it is important to understand that while traffic management is in place, the road remains open to vehicles and normal road rules need to be obeyed.
The Cape to Cape MTB is timed electronically by Blue Chip Timing. You will receive a number plate and seat post sticker in your competitor pack that each contain timing chips. These need to be fixed to your bike for the duration of the event, please refer to the information sheet in your timing pack for directions.
Rider Race Pack Collection
It is recommended that all riders carry sufficient water and electrolytes to prevent dehydration, along with basic first aid equipment. Riders who have medical conditions (eg asthma) should carry their own medication for the duration of the event. The Cape to Cape MTB doctors also recommend that all competitors have a current tetanus vaccination. If you are uncertain about your current vaccination status please contact your GP for assistance.
When you arrive at Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse for Stage 1 you will need to have your number plate and seat post sticker fixed to your bike to enter the lighthouse complex. If you have not yet picked up your competitor pack containing these items, please present to the registration tent before attempting to enter the lighthouse complex. Once your number plate and seat post sticker are fitted you will enter the lighthouse complex by rolling your bike over a timing mat to ensure your timing chip is working. Once you have done this you are checked in for all four days and will not need to repeat this process. Throughout the event you can keep track of your position by visiting the Blue Chip Timing website (www.bluechiptiming. com.au) or by entering your race number in to the timing computer next to the information tent. If you have a timing issue, please have a chat with our staff at the Race HQ tent.
Course Diversions And Time Penalties
Failure to Dismount Penalty The Cape to Cape MTB contains multiple major road crossings where riders are mandated to dismount their bicycles and walk them across the road. BAG DROP
The Cape to Cape MTB was built for the everyday rider looking to challenge themselves. As a result we want to keep everyone riding for as long as possible but we have an obligation to rider safety. Over the last five events as the field of competitors has grown we have implemented start waves and timed checkpoints through each of the four stages. Riders need to make checkpoint times as outlined below or will be redirected onto a shortcut to speed them up on each stage. The stage checkpoints, times and penalties are worked out around an average speed of 10-11km/hr.
STAGE 1 – THURSDAY (AUGUSTA TO HAMELIN BAY)
Rider Race Pack Collection will be open from 11:00am till 7:00pm on Wednesday 19th October at The Common (Gnarabar), Margarets Beach Resort, 1 Resort Place, Margaret River WA 6285. Then again on Thursday 20th at Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse, Hamelin Bay from 9:00am.

2017 marks ten years of the Cape to Cape MTB and to celebrate this milestone an epic four days of festivities has been planned! Next year has been designed for everyone and anyone to participate in the Cape to Cape MTB and celebrate our 10 Year Anniversary. If you have previously competed in the Cape to Cape MTB we are inviting you to join us again, or if you are looking to participate for the first time then make 2017 your year, we have taken away all the excuses to create the ultimate Cape to Cape course! Over the past few years riders have raved about how rad the Margaret River Special Stage is on Day 3 so for 2017 our Race Director has designed Four Special Stages for riders to absolutely froth on – and each will highlight the best set of trails through the south west capes region! Taking a break from the point to point format, Year 10 will be based solely out of venues around Margaret River with all four stages starting within a 5km radius of the Margaret River town centre. The Four Special Stages have been designed to incorporate the best trails used throughout the ten years of the Cape to Cape and will include areas such as Boranup, Middle Earth, The Pines and the soon to be opened Compartment 10. The redesign of the course has also seen the inclusion of ‘Stage Host Venues’ meaning each stage will start and finish at the same location! This will take the previous logistical issues away from your planning for Year Ten. Stage Host Venues will include Xanadu Wines, Leeuwin Estate, Colonial Brewery and the centre of Margaret River township itself. For the first time we will also be implementing wave starts from Stage 1 with the first wave saved for elite riders only and those who have previously finished in the Top 100 at Cape to Cape MTB. Behind them you can pick whatever start wave you wish with waves leaving at 15 minute gaps all morning. Allocation to these waves will be on a first come first served basis so if you want to ride with your mates sign up straight away to reserve your spot as once the waves fill the event will be sold out! 2017 will be an event for the whole family with the close proximity of stages reducing travel time during
the day and increasing the opportunity to really explore the Margaret River region and all that it has to offer! To cap it off we will have an event hub within the middle of Margaret River with the council allowing us to close one of the side streets and take over for the week of the event. The Event Hub will be open daily for the week of the event from the Wednesday onwards with Registrations, Merchandise, Sponsor Zones, Riding Demos, plus a stage for daily presentations and nightly music acts. The Event Hub will be the place to hang after each stage with Food Trucks, mobile bars, sponsor demos, elite rider marquees and everything else all within a close proximity of your favourite bars and restaurants in Margaret River. To make the event even more memorable, every rider who registers will receive a 10 Year Cape to Cape MTB Commemorative Feature Jersey. A really special design for 2017, you won’t want to miss out on this jersey! Entry numbers will be strictly capped so get in early and avoid disappointment, REGISTER NOW on the website, www.capetocapemtb.com.
