NAVIGATING THIS GUIDE

Message from the Event Directors

The event information in this guide is organised to assist you with planning your Port to Port MTB experience and a pleasurable time in the Newcastle and Hunter Valley regions.

Where has the last twelve months gone? A blink of the eye and we are back at Port to Port MTB again in one of the most beautiful regions in Australia.

Our stages are detailed as accurately as possible, however last minute course changes do occur for a variety of reasons. Please check our Facebook page for last minute changes and updates to course alignments and spectator points. We have also highlighted some of the best parts of each day’s ride, identified some of the best spots for spectators to cheer on friends and family as well as support crew access. We’ve also included a shout-out to 2015’s Honour Roll so that if you’re riding, you know what time to beat!

Firstly, we are very pleased to welcome everyone back to the magnificent Newcastle, Port Stephens, Lake Macquarie and Hunter region for the third annual Port to Port MTB.

Toward the back of this Guide, we outline everything you need to know in anticipation of your ride, including timing, awards, accreditation and safety. Please take some time to familiarise yourself, particularly with our start line systems and etiquette.

Some of the highlights from 2015 are back again, bigger and better, including the Crowne Plaza Sundown Shootout. We urge all riders, support crew, families and spectators to come along to the Crowne Plaza at 4:30pm on Day Two and witness our elite riders battle it out over a unique course under time trial conditions, with time credits on the line!!! It’s a great, up-close spectacle for everyone and all are welcome.

The feedback we received from all riders and participants after the 2015 event was fantastic, particularly the positive reviews about the course, world class trails and rider experience. At a time when many events are seeing decreasing numbers, we are very proud to report that Port to Port MTB has grown again this year by almost 40% and is now established as one of the premier stage races in Australia.

We are very fortunate to have the support of the NSW Government, in particular Destination NSW as well as amazing support from the City of Newcastle. Thank you so much for your faith in the project and for the promotional impetus you have provided.

Our course just keeps getting better Last year saw the inclusion of a brand new Stage 3 and we haven’t stopped making improvements to ensure this day is a pearler. Our great mates at Hunter Mountain Bike Association and Department of Forestry have helped with some welcome additions, including extra single track and trails. Let’s not forget the Cooranbong Men’s Shed who have purpose built the finish line right into the heart of Cooranbong Park to make Port to Port a local fixture and we couldn’t be happier. We don’t underestimate the toughness of this stage though, so we have put in place a diversion for those at the end of the field – don’t worry, you won’t miss the fun stuff but we don’t want your legs too tired to tackle the final stage the following day!

Here’s a little bit about us… This is Newcastle – a city of contrast, change and endless possibility. A city bound by a working harbour and glorious surf beaches and forged from coal, timber and sweat. As Australia’s second-oldest and New South Wales second largest city, Newcastle has moved on from its industrial steel city image to embrace a new outlook. Now renowned for its festivals and events, laid back culture, arts scene and the clever repurposing of buildings; it’s making a name for itself as a haven for lovers of fine fare, boutique clothing and home wares, craft beer and quality local wines. Discover Newcastle’s historical history by visiting Fort Scratchley; prominently positioned overlooking Nobbys and Newcastle Beaches and the harbour. From the grounds explore the city scape with 360° views of Newcastle or take a step back in time with a guided tunnel tour. The Newcastle Museum located in Honeysuckle will keep the entire family entertained (including the big kids). Explore Newcastle’s Story through a range of exhibitions or give your brain a work out in the Supernova science centre.

pathways, beaches, ocean baths and beautiful park lands to explore. Hire a bike and travel along Bathers Way past our world class beaches and ocean baths. Visit a range of boutique beer venues such as the Grain Store Craft Beer Cafe, The Hop Factory and brand new microbrewery Foghorn Brewhouse. If wine is more your scene; emerge yourself in our small bar culture by visiting La Passe Temps, The Reserve Wine Bar or see if you can find our speakeasy venues Coal & Cedar and The Koutetsu hidden amongst the city buildings. Newcastle’s Hunter Street Mall has a lively dining and coffee scene thanks to One Penny Black, Three Bears Kitchen and Cazador, you’ll be left filling satisfied whilst you find those one off pieces in the artisan filled shops. Stage 1 - 11:30am START:

34.5KM

D’Alboras Marina, Victoria Parade, Eastern Groyne, Nelson Bay

FINISH: D’Alboras Marina, Victoria Parade, Eastern Groyne, Nelson Bay

SPECTATOR POINTS Stage 1 includes two spectator points offering views of the start, finish and the Three Bears where riders may require all the support they can possibly get! Spectator Point 1 is the start/ finish line at Nelson Bay Marina, located on Victoria Parade in Nelson Bay. Riders will depart at 11:30am and are expected to start arriving back at the finish line at 12:45pm with the last riders expected at 3:00pm. Spectator Point 2 is the Three Bears Descent, a super fast descent in to a tight right hand corner that follows three steep shale climbs that riders have

tackled. To access this area drive south along Nelson Bay Road towards Gan Gan Road, 200m before the intersection there will be a gravel road on your left underneath the powerlines where you need to park. Proceed to walk 100m down the trail in a southerly direction where you will find the course markings.

STAGE HIGHLIGHTS Stage 1 contains multiple loose gravel, sandstone, washed out descents that let riders get their drift on but who can forget Three Bears; meeting the Bear family is something that riders will not forget!

COURSE DESCRIPTION Riders will start the 2016 Port to Port MTB within the surrounds of the Marina d’Albora Nelson Bay. Riders will again start with a controlled rollout behind the lead vehicle along Nelson Bay Road, allowing the spectacular views of the ocean to be taken in before the pace is turned up. Sharpen your elbows and stick them out because once the lead vehicle pulls away it is racing for sheep stations in an uphill tarmac sprint before negotiating a tight hair pin in to the first piece of loose singletrack that is sure to offer some fun and spectacular views of Shoal Bay. A series of short steep climbs will sort out the pecking order ahead of the rocky and rutted Box Beach descent, followed by another tricky climb. A quick blast along the Marine Drive bike path will bring riders to Fingal Bay, where a lap of the area on

14

the tarmac will provide some respite and some great views of the beautiful bay area before getting stuck into the offroad tracks in Tomaree National Park. Leaving the tarmac, riders will spend the next 20km zig zagging through the various trails of Tomaree National Park. Beginning with a tough climb, riders will hit a fast firm firetrail for 4km through to Gan Gan Road. This is where the easy speed ends, as next up is the now infamous Three Bears under the powerlines; three very steep and ugly loose shale climbs. While the first one looks big, that is only Baby Bear, wait until you see Papa Bear! Last year this section of Stage 1 shook up the field with even the elite riders at the pointy end of the field struggling to stay upright on these climbs. The reward for conquering the Three Bears is the descent

down the other side as the course doubles back and takes in a mixture of trails back out towards Fingal Bay. The course then peels off and heads down a fast smooth run behind the golf course, followed by a final rough rooty descent down Government Hill with the tarmac roads coming into sight to take you to the finish line. Popping out of Tomaree National Park with only 4km to go, riders cross town on the tarmac for a look at the water, then dart through the stunning maze of singletrack in Fly Point Park. A final quick sprint along Victoria Parade will see riders return to the Marina to pass under the finish arch and complete the stage. At less than 35km Stage 1 is on the shorter side compared to the big days to come, but ask anyone who has ridden this stage in the past and they will tell you it is anything but easy!

15

Stage 2 - 9:00am START:

48KM

Lindemans Winery, 119 McDonalds Road, Pokolbin

FINISH: Briar Ridge Vineyard, 593 Mount View Road, Mount View

SPECTATOR POINTS Spectator Point 1 is at Cedar Creek where the riders can be seen passing through the rolling green countryside anywhere between around 9:55 and 11am. To get there drive north up Cedar Creek Rd from Wollombi Rd but please drive carefully on the left as riders will be heading southbound on this road. Park at the intersection of Cedar Creek Rd and Sawpit Rd to watch riders pass along Cedar Creek Rd. Spectator Point 2 is at the Mount View Descent where a magical view of the Hunter Valley can be seen as riders speed past anywhere between

2015 HONOUR ROLL 10:30am and 1pm. To access this spectator point drive along Bimbadeen Rd from Bellbird until you reach the road closure and park here. Continue to walk along Bimbadeen Rd until Mount View Road where the riders will be descending.

STAGE HIGHLIGHTS If the first climb doesn’t tickle your fancy as the highlight of the stage then the 10km descent titled The Rabbit Hole will definitely increase your stoke factor as it flows its way down the valley!

COURSE DESCRIPTION The second stage of the Port to Port MTB leaves the beaches and heads inland to the amazing vineyard region of the Hunter Valley. This stage is pretty simple, it involves two epic climbs split by an even more epic descent inbetween! Make sure to strap your climbing legs on for today as they will be required straight out of the blocks! Beginning again at the beautiful Lindeman’s Winery, the first climb that heads into the Pokolbin State Forest can be easily seen in the background from the start line. Don’t let the view deter you but instead head out for a good warm and get those pins firing and ready to go! Here the course rises for 10km up through spectacular trees, ferns and surrounds all the way to the top. It is here that we

16

connect into a series of epic moto single tracks across the crest that will test the rider’s ability on the way to the famed Rabbit Hole descent. The Rabbit Hole descent takes riders down, down, down into the depths of the forest below. This descent got its name as it seems to go on forever! Just when you think you have reached the bottom, down it goes again, and again! With high speeds, drifty hairpin turns and plenty of airtime this descent will have rider’s yeowing all the way down. When you finally reach the bottom of the Rabbit Hole a creek crossing then brings riders out into the stunning country scenery of Cedar Creek. Coming out along the river line a 5km tarmac section will allow riders to have a breather and spin the legs out as they pass through

Millfield with the stage’s second climb up Mount View looming in the distance! The Mount View climb winds up through the countryside past green, grassy farmland as it claws back up onto the ridge. The new finish alignment that was introduced last year will again be in place as riders descend down a blisteringly fast series of tarmac switchbacks where you are unlikely to have time to look up and enjoy the stunning views over the Hunter Valley. All that then remains is a final sprint through the vines and up the short steep pinch of Briar’s Hill, a climb made easier from last year as the dusty gravel road has now been sealed, which we are sure all riders will appreciate as they arrive at the finish line outside the cellar door of Briar Ridge Vineyard.

17

Stage 3 - 9:00am START:

Cooranbong Park, Freemans Drive, Lake Macquarie

FINISH: Cooranbong Park, Freemans Drive, Lake Macquarie

SPECTATOR POINTS The main spectator point for Stage Three is within the singletrack of the Awaba MTB Park where riders can be seen passing through twice. Riders are expected to arrive at around 9:15am where they will complete the first piece of singletrack before heading out on a 12km loop of the park, returning at around 9:45am. To access the Awaba MTB Park spectators are required to drive along Mount Faulk Rd from

Freemans Drive, following the signs to Awaba MTB Park. Park along the left hand verge of the road just before it turns to gravel, please do not park in the MTB carpark or anywhere obstructing Mount Faulk Road as this forms part of the course for the riders.

STAGE HIGHLIGHTS The endless flow experienced in the Awaba MTB Park singletrack is the highlight of the day, closely followed by the epic moto singletrack later in the stage!

The newest alignment of the Port to Port from last year returns in 2016 with the Awaba feature stage set to again be one of the highlights of the whole event! Coming in at around 64km, this truly epic stage is expected to sort out the men from the boys (as well as the Cinderella’s from the ugly sisters) as pretty much every kilometre throws up new challenges unique to the region.

nd

Starting and finishing in the quaint surrounds of Cooranbong Park, the stage will again start with a 5km neutral tarmac rollout along Freemans Drive. But once the Race Director’s vehicle pulls away, the pace will be ramped up as riders sprint for position down a 3km road descent towards the entry to AWABA Mountain Bike Park. Once a couple of punchy fire road climbs have been navigated the course enters the phenomenal AWABA trails for the next 12km riders as

riders will be lost in a single trail wonderland. Be sure to have your orange lenses in your glasses for today’s stage as the natural contour of the Awaba MTB Park takes riders from high to low valleys and bright to dark light as it offers the riders endless amounts of flow throughout the 12kms. You will want to enjoy the experience of Awaba, as after leaving the singletrack the stage’s main climb up Mount Faulk looms. Don’t blow all your berries in the first 500m as Mount Faulk will take you victim! Be sure to find your rhythm and save some berries for later on because if you haven’t already become acquainted with your stem then Mount Faulk will be sure to introduce the two of you as it takes you up to the spectacular summit! The reward for cresting Mount Faulk is that for the remaining 35km of this stage the trails are predominately headed downwards! The next 20km

will see riders flying along the undulating ridgeline of the Watagans, with screaming descents mixed with the odd pinch climb, before the course turns distinctly down at the 45km mark! The Dogs Descent will give rider’s legs a rest, and instead brake pads will be in the firing line as the speeds pick up with the only question being how fast you are prepared to go down the fire roads as the multiple waterbars are waiting to launch riders in to orbit. Some Alp d’Huez style hairpin turns add extra entertainment to this 10km descent, before riders then enjoy sections of new singletrack before coming out at Martinsville Road. Remember your friend the stem from the Mount Faulk climb? It is time to get re-acquainted, as a 3km flat tarmac time trial now separates you from the finish line. After conquering the tarmac a quick blast down the Holy Trail will spit riders out into Cooranbong Park to conclude the stage.

Stage 4 - 8:45am START:

Cams Wharf, Crangan Bay Drive Cams Wharf

FINISH: Dixon Park, Ocean Street Merewether

SPECTATOR POINTS Spectator Point 1 for the 2016 Stage Four is at the technical singletracks of Wallarah just before riders climb out on to Scenic Drive. The riders are expected to arrive at this area at approximately 9:15am depending on weather conditions. COURSE DESCRIPTION The final stage of the Port to Port MTB 2016 could not start in a more idylic location overlooking Lake Macquarie with sweeping views across to the steep slopes of the Watagans. But don’t let that lull you into a false sense of security as the course ahead is going to be manic! From the start line the course immediately leaves the lake behind and crosses over the Pacific Highway and out into the trails of Wallarah National Park. The new alignment from last year will again be used which includes a mix of tough climbs and technical descents along Scenic Trail, Yondeo Trail and the Crossing Trail, with some stunning views of the coastline thrown in for good measure. Upon leaving Wallarah and crossing Scenic Drive, the course will see riders flying down a fast descent under the powerlines,

20

before hitting a section of twisty singletrack through to Swansea. Joining onto the Swansea Pelican Bike Path, riders will again encounter a Neutral Zone that will see them cross over Swansea Bridge on foot whilst enjoying the picturesque views of Lake Entrance. Once over the bridge the race is back on, with a short tarmac blast and some tight singletrack through the Blacksmiths area before the stage winds through the grounds of Belmont Golf Course. Once out of the golf course the alignment heads north along the Kalaroo fire trail before connecting onto the Fernleigh Track where riders can cruise for a bit before the real action restarts. To the north of Redhead the course swings off the Fernleigh Track for an intermission, taking in some challenging off road trails around Dudley before rejoining the Fernleigh

Track. After a second section of Fernleigh fury, riders will approach the jewel in Stage 4’s crown; the trails of Glenrock. The good news is that the alignment through Glenrock will be even better this year and hopefully (fingers crossed) more enjoyable without the flooded conditions we saw last year. The alignment will again begin from Scouts Road and into De Luge before the course crosses the river and takes in all the classic Glenrock trails, including Snakes & Ladders, Double Barrel, Kenny, BJs and Seuss Land. Upon exiting Glenrock riders will descend at eye watering speed down Scenic Drive, which lives up to its name by providing some of the best views along all of the Newcastle coastline. A final sprint past the famed Newcastle surf breaks will bring riders to the finish line at Dixon Park, where a festival of the regions wine, food and beer will await!

Driving Guide Whether you’re moving with the ride or making Newcastle your base station, none of the drives to the Port to Port MTB Start Lines are more than 50 minutes and they all definitely have the scenery to make it a pleasant journey.

LET’S START AT THE BEGINNING If you are coming from Newcastle Airport to Nelson Bay, your trip will take about 25 minutes. Take a left as soon as you exit the Airport and follow your nose straight along Nelson Bay Road past Bobs Farm and Anna Bay until you reach Nelson Bay. If you are coming from Sydney to Nelson Bay, your trip will take about 2.5 hours. Just shoot north onto the M1 (formally the F3 Freeway). At the end of the M1, turn right at the roundabout, following the sign ‘Hexham & Pacific Highway’ (BP service station and Hungry Jacks will be on your next left). The road will veer to the right and merge with the New England Highway, after which you should merge to the left lane taking the sign ‘Taree & Pacific Highway’, which will direct you over the Hexham Bridge. Turn right onto Tomago Road at the traffic lights, follow Tomago Road until you reach a roundabout and turn left onto Nelson Bay Road.

ONCE YOU’RE IN THE BAY Head straight along Nelson Bay Road past Bobs Farm & Anna Bay until you reach Nelson Bay. Turn left at the1st roundabout at Church & Stockton Street. Continue along Church Street and turn right at the next roundabout into Government Road - this road then becomes Victoria Parade. Here you’ll find the Start Line of Day 1. If you are coming to register on the Wednesday (between 11am – 7pm) you’ll keep going to the Shoal Bay Holiday Park. Continue along past the Marina and Tourist Information Centre, straight ahead through the roundabout and follow the road around past Wests Nelson Bay which will be on your left. Go straight through the next roundabout and continue along Shoal Bay Road for a few more minutes, you will see Shoal Bay Holiday Park on your right hand side.

22

The drive from Nelson Bay to the Hunter Valley is just over an hour and this is the longest drive of the event. You will set off on Victoria Parade and Church Street, then follow the B63 to Cabbage Tree Road in Williamtown. Follow Cabbage Tree Road and Tomago Road, then take the A1, John Renshaw Dr and Hunter Expy/M15to Lovedale Rd in Allandale. Take the exit from Hunter Expy/ M15. Crowne Plaza Hunter Valley is on your right at the end of Lovedale Road. • To get to the Start Line at Lindeman’s from Crowne Plaza Hunter Valley you are a 10 minute drive away. Take a right out of the gates, turn left at Broke Road and then take a right at McDonalds Road. Our finish Line at Briar Ridge is only a 10 minute drive away, so it’s up to you whether you decide to park at the start and take the shuttle, or park at the finish and ride to the start line as your warm up!

There’s a lot to

love about Newcastle.

Surprised?

• From the Hunter Valley we venture to Cooranbong, Lake Macquarie. Follow the B63 to Freemans Drive Cooranbong and continue along. The destination will be on your right. For parking just drive past the park and take your first right. Then turn right again into the Church Parking. • With the last day finishing in Newcastle we recommend you stay in either Newcastle or Lake Macquarie. From both locations it’s a short 20 minute trip to Wrightson Park, Cams Wharf. Head along the Pacific Highway to Nords Wharf Road and turn right onto Crangan Bay Drive. The Start Line will be on your left. • Dixon Park is our last port of call situated in Merewether, Newcastle. If you are the support car meeting the riders, you’ll have a job to get there before the elites! This is about a 40 minute drive heading back onto the Pacific Highway until you flow into Scenic Drive, Merewether. You won’t be able to turn into John Parade as this will be closed for the riders so take a right at Berner Street which will bring you out to the top of the park.

The ever experienced and highly talented Jenni King has had a dominant summer of racing where she won National XCO Rounds and consistently podiumed at every event. No stranger to endurance/stage racing, King will be making her Port to Port debut in 2016 and will be looking to put in a strong performance across all stages. Watch out on Stage 3 and 4 as she puts her technical skills on display in the Awaba and Glenrock singletrack!

ANDREW BLAIR With multiple Top 5 stage finishes in the 2015 event the Swell Specialized rider is always one to look out for when it comes to the longer races. Having a win at the Easter in the Alice event will boost his spirits as he looks ahead to the 2016 Port to Port. With team mate Shaun Lewis attending this year the dynamic duo are ones to look out for!

PAUL VAN DER PLOEG

The Newcastle local produces more roost than Chad Reed as he tears through the local Glenrock trails trying to drop whoever is on his wheel. One to look out for in the Crowne Plaza Hunter Valley Shootout be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the local talent as he produces good results throughout the event!

24

One half of the Willy Locke race team Rebecca likes to keep the rivalry strong between her team mate Naomi, finishing in a sprint finish almost every stage in the 2015 Port to Port. Expect nothing less in 2016 as Bec continues her strong form from the summer of racing, including respectable performances at the Road Cycling National Champs as well as the Mountain Bike Nationals held not long ago.

NAOMI WILLIAMS The second half to Willy Locke, Naomi is always up for a good battle on the race track and is sure to bring excitement to the 2016 Port to Port. Like Bec, Naomi also had a very strong summer season competing on both the road and the dirt for Focus 4Shaw. If 2015 was any indication as to how to finish a stage race be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the Willy Locke girls as they battle it out for the overall!

Is a not-for-profit organization and registered Charity. Its sole purpose is to provide a high standard aero medical search and rescue service for the communities within its areas of operation. More than 1.2 million people live within the 132,000 square kilometre regions of NSW that are serviced by four helicopters based at Broadmeadow in the city of Newcastle and at Tamworth Airport.

The operational cost for these aircraft is between $3500 per hour. The yearly operating budget is $16 million. Some funding is provided by the NSW Department of Health but more than $8 million is raised from sponsorships, business partnerships, community fundraising, donations, payroll deductions and special events. We operate 24 hours per day and 7 days a week, performing 3 key roles: • Primary accident response, where we fly to the scene of an accident and then transfer the patient to hospital. • Secondary response, where we fly to a district hospital and transfer a patient to a larger medical facility as required.

Thank you No one has ever paid to be assisted by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service because our community generously gives to ensure that the rescue helicopters are there when our community needs us. 40 Years

• Search and rescue in conjunction with AUSSAR and NSW Police.

Each year the helicopters in the Hunter/Mid North Coast and New England/North West regions fly more than 1000 life saving missions. This service is provided free of charge, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year to anyone in need.

Wakeup. It’s still dark out. Food. Coffee. Squeeze in an hour of intervals. Get the kids fed. More coffee. Glycogen window is closing. Off to school. Off to work. Stare at the screen. Home. Still 30 minutes of light left. Hill repeats. Repeat. Day after day. Week after week. Registration is open. Get to sleep early. Wake up even earlier. Pin the number. Line up. Swallow the nerves. This is going to hurt. This won’t break me.

This is going to be Epic.
