Tower Bridge is Joe’s favourite

Thames challenge Joe Pasquale to do 10-mile London Bridges Walk for Diabetes UK

E

SSEX-born comedian Joe Pasquale is among 13 other celebrities that are backing their favourite London bridge in a bid to encourage people in Essex to sign up for Diabetes UK’s 10-mile London Bridges walking challenge. Taking place on October 11 its aim is to raise vital funds for the charity organisation that works across the country to help those affected by the condition. Joe, a London Marathon runner for Diabetes UK, is backing Tower Bridge

and said: “Anyone who’s ever done the London Marathon (as I did for Diabetes UK) will know that feeling of elation running over Tower Bridge on a sunny Sunday. “One of the many reasons why it’s London’s most exciting bridge.” Sir Roger Moore is backing the MI6-adjacent Vauxhall Bridge, onetime resident Frank Skinner has picked Lambeth, and sports connections have led Greg Rusedski to Battersea and Sky Sports man Peter Dale to Chelsea. Meanwhile, the South Bank’s artistic

and entertainment connections have drawn the backing of Sandi Toksvig, Adrian Lester, Philippa Gregory, Michael Frayn and Phillip Schofield, while London Bridge is backed by chef Cyrus Todiwala for its Borough Market connections. Political pundit Iain Dale is backing Westminster, Sky News’s Steve Dixon enjoys the views from Millennium Bridge and walking enthusiast Julia Bradbury is backing Albert Bridge. The celebrities are backing the 13 bridges that will be crossed by everyone

who takes part in the charity’s London Bridges Challenge. All the money raised from the event will help Diabetes UK to care for, connect, and campaign alongside even more people living with diabetes as the charity continues its work to prevent and, one day, cure the condition currently affecting 3.9 million people in the UK. To sign up for the London Bridges Challenge event, visit diabetes.org.uk/ bridgeschallenge or call their National Events Team on 0345 123 2399.

In the saddle for Essex 100 cycle ride in brief

C

YCLING challenge the Essex 100 ride will take place through the stunning North Essex countryside this weekend. Children’s charity Action Medical Research is calling for riders to take part in the event on Sunday, 20 September. The ride offers three options: a Cool 37-mile route for those new to cycling or who haven’t had much time to train; a Classic 68-mile route; or the more challenging Champion option, which covers 104 miles - ideal for experienced sportive riders. All routes set out from the Weston Homes Community Stadium in Colchester and take in the quiet villages and farmlands of Essex as well as the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with plenty of hills to challenge riders. This event is part of the charity’s popular RIDE100 series of one-day bike rides that take place in fantastic cycling locations across the UK. All

include chip timing, food and water stations, lunch, marshals and mechanics. Cyclists participating in the Essex 100 will be raising money to help fund medical research into conditions affecting babies and children. Action Medical Research has been funding medical breakthroughs since it began in 1952. The charity is currently supporting work around childhood cancer, Down syndrome, epilepsy, and cystic fibrosis, as well as some rare and distressing conditions that severely affect children. Among those taking part in the ride on Sunday is Chris Chappell, from Chelmsford, whose premature daughter inspired him to first ride for Action Medical Research two years ago; now he is getting back on his bike to support the children’s charity again. Chris took part in the Essex 100 ride in 2013 and raised £2,178 after his employer Barclays matched

SPECIAL ceremony took place at Orsett Hall last week to commemorate Lt. Col. Sir Francis Henry Douglas Charlton Whitmore, 1st Bt. Of Orsett, KCB, CMG, DSO, TD, JP to mark 100 years (September 10, 1915) since he received command of the Essex Yeomanry and to commemorate the Officers and Men of the Yeomanry and of the 10th Royal Hussars who served with him in the Great War with the unveiling of a Thurrock Heritage Plaque that was sponsored by Thurrock Council’s ‘Great War Committee.’ Colonel Sir Francis Henry Douglas Charlton Whitmore was born April 20, 1872 and died on June 12 1962, and is buried in the Whitmore plot in Orsett Church graveyard. He will be forever linked with Orsett Hall which was his home. Francis had been educated at Eton and in 1892 was commissioned into the 1st Essex Artillery

Volunteers. He later transferred to the Essex Yeomanry and served in the Boer War with the Imperial Yeomanry. He was wounded in the Battle of Frezenburg on May 13, 1915, part of the second battle of Ypres. After being sent home to recuperate, Francis returned to the Yeomanry where he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and took command on September 10, 1915. The centenary of this was reflected in the unveiling of the plaque. Jonathan Catton, Thurrock’s Heritage & Museum Officer said: “It was very special to unveil the plaque exactly 100 years to the day he received full command of the Essex Yeomanry and to have his granddaughter at the ceremony. “We hope visitors to Orsett Hall Hotel will learn about the link with Colonel Francis Whitmore and his efforts and leadership during the Great War when they see the plaque.”

HE College Players, a group of nonprofessional actors from Brentwood and Havering, bring Harold Pinter’s ‘The Birthday Party’ to Brentwood Theatre from September 24-26. The cast features no fewer than three 2015 ‘Brent Award’ winners: Gary Ball, William Wells and Claire Hilder. The play is directed by William Wells in his directorial debut. The Birthday Party, Pinter’s first full length play was first performed in 1958 and tells the story of a retired musician, Stanley Webber, who is in hiding in a boarding house in a seaside town from an event in his past. Gary Ball who plays Webber, was joint winner with William Wells in the Brents this year for their performances in Ray Cooney’s farce, Out of Order. Gary says: “Pinter is very different from Cooney. The element of farce is missing, but the need for tight timing is still crucial. It is great to be directed by my co-Brent winner William,’ William Wells is a regular performer at Brentwood Theatre with Hutton Players but this is the first time he has directed a full-length play. On his directorial debut William said: “I have always wanted to direct a Pinter play and The Birthday Party seemed ideal for the College Players team.” The Birthday Party is on at Brentwood Theatre from September 24-26. Damien Stone the owner of the ladies-only Go30 health club in Romford High Street organised a 24-hour ‘bike-a-thon’ that started at 12 midday on Friday September 11. “We’ve always supported Saint Francis Hospice and over the years have raised more than £10,000 for them, by taking part in events like the Star Walk, but we also wanted a new challenge that would be a great way of getting staff and club members involved so we hit on the idea of using one of our static exercise bikes non-stop for 24 hours.” Events Manager at Saint Francis Hospice, Katy Woodgate said: “Go30 are big corporate supporters of the hospice and we are so grateful to Damien, his staff and club members helping us once again.”

99 days to get financially fit for Christmas Plan ahead now to ensure a smoother run up to the big day, says Julie Hutchison

W

ITH just 99 days to go until the biggest and often most expensive holiday of the year, now is the time to start planning your finances so that you can begin 2016 free from Christmas related money worries. Although it may seem early to begin thinking about Christmas, Standard Life’s Consumer Finance Expert, Julie Hutchison, recommends planning ahead. “Even though some of us will shudder at the thought of tinsel, turkey and gift tags, thinking about Christmas sooner rather than later could be the difference between a financially red or black January. Planning now will allow you to maximise your savings as Christmas creeps closer, whilst also reducing the stress and panic of paying for everything on one month.” 5 Top Money Tips to help you plan for Christmas: 1. Save £20 a week Start putting money aside now, for example £20 a week, and you’ll have

much more available for Christmas shopping. Setting aside £20 a week between now and the end of November would give you an extra £300. 2. Book your travel now Whether you’re booking a hotel, train, or plane, doing so in advance could really cut your costs. Make sure you shop around for different prices, there’s plenty of websites to help you do this such as TrainLine and CheapFlights. 3. Prepare your present list Make sure you sit down with family and friends and discuss the subject of presents sooner rather than later. Setting a maximum price is an effective way to help factor in present costs making it easier to plan. 4. Don’t be a retail snob Keep affordability front of mind when shopping, especially when it comes to the big Christmas food shop. Can you bulk buy at a discount supermarket? Does your local butcher or food shop

delighted to be recognised for what both I and the amazing team at Blossom have achieved. Being a mum I know how important time is and I carry this through into my VA business. ‘As you think – so you become’

Do you need to make that change from within but not sure where to begin? Do you want and deserve to be acknowledged for who you are? Do you wish that you could be more confident and but don’t have the confidence to ask how? What do you really want?

L

a vast array of life experiences. “I have created ideas to change the mindset that will bring a feeling of freedom and happiness. I believe that every person has the right, no matter what their circumstances are, to realise how unique and important they are and become the person that they want to be. The more we are aware

of ourselves and who we are promotes a more positive and happy individual.” Lisa’s top tips for a positive mindset: * Choose to like yourself. * Choose to become positive. * Surround yourself with positive and productive people. * Imagine yourself as the person you want to be.

Lisa adds: “What could be better than living each day with self-recognition and being able to express feelings freely, radiating happiness from the inside out – no matter what the day to day life entails.” Is this what you have been looking for? If so Absolute Life System is here to guide you.

Rugby Positive Thinking

Positive thinking can help in many ways, especially when it comes to wanting to change your life around as empowerment coach and author Kim Wymer (pictured above) discovered. Kim hit rock bottom and found herself leading a very unhappy life. She didn’t know what to do until her sister gave her a copy of the personal development book - The Secret. The self-help book led Kim to research into other books and resources and helped her realise she was not alone and that she really could turn her life around. Kim then discovered the Sue Stone Foundation – and was drawn to Sue. Sue, turned her own life around after hitting rock bottom and her work had a huge impact on Kim. After reading Sue’s books, Kim decided to attend one of her workshops. The rest as they say is history. Kim is now is a qualified Positive Empowerment Coach and runs Positive Thinking Talks in Essex. “If I can do it anyone can,” Kim says.” For more details about Kim and her Positive Thinking Talks in Essex, visit her website: kimwymer.com. Kim’s debut book ‘Out of the Shadows is out now telling the story of how she overcame everything that life could throw at her. Available on Amazon.

Housing Market won’t stay this good warns local housebuilder House hunters can save hundreds of pounds each month with current rates on Help to Buy

P

roperty hunters in Essex are being encouraged to make the most of impressive interest rates while they last. The advice comes further to Bank of England Governor Mark Carney’s warning advising interest rates could rise as early as the turn of the year. Linden Homes which has a number of sites across the county of Essex is encouraging local people who are thinking about moving, to seize the moment and secure a low rate, affordable mortgage. Adam Champion works for independent financial advisor, The New Homes Group. He explained: “The market has literally never been so good for the people of Essex. Interest rates are at an all-time low but are only set to stay for a short amount of time. These rates coupled with Help to Buy make a new home purchase so much more affordable than people realise. Better still, buyers now have the opportunity to lock down a mortgage for the next couple of years to take control of their finances and live in some real desirable locations across the county.” And according to The New Homes Group, these benefits apply across the whole market. Adam

explained: “Looking at the numbers on Help to Buy, for the lower end of the market, compared to five years ago buyers securing a mortgage for £200,000 are now approximately £230 better off each month, for the first two years of their mortgage. Similarly for those buying more expensive properties on Help to Buy at just under half a million for instance, could be saving over £450 per month in the first two years.” Help to Buy, which was launched back in April 2013, applies to a range of potential purchasers including first-time and next-time buyers on properties up to the value of £600,000. Buyers are required to provide just a 5 per cent deposit to then borrow a further 20 per cent from the Government in the form of an equity loan. Buyers then only need a 75 per cent mortgage agreed by their bank or building society to secure their home. Linden Homes Eastern’s regional sales and marketing manager, Roseanne Bullen commented: “Buyers are far savvier these days and with so much in the press about the housing market, people want to understand how their monthly outgoings are going to be affected if they buy. The numbers speak for themselves: we have seen how the current rates can really make a difference to people’s monthly bills. If you are considering moving then we would urge you to do so as soon as you can this year, as this current healthy climate is unlikely to stay.” The people of Essex have an opportunity to secure a home with these impressive rates at any of the Linden Homes developments across the county, which also offer

Help to Buy. The collections of homes include St Johns and Beeches Crescent in Chelmsford, Corinthia Mews in Burnham-on-Crouch, Northfields in Colchester and Edge in Harlow. For more information or to book an appointment with the team to hear about securing a dream home with these ground-breaking rates, simply visit www.lindenhomes.co.uk.

Houses so good... that Naysha bought one herself A sales advisor at a leading house builder was so impressed with the development that she was working on that she bought one of the properties herself.

N

aysha Turner is one of two sales advisors working at Persimmon Homes’ development called The Village, in Aveley, Essex. The more she showed customers around the site, the more she fell in love with it. Eventually Naysha took the plunge and bought a four-bed Chestnut style property – just yards from the sales office. Naysha, 39, said: “Everyone is saying how great it must be living so close to work. While that is true, that really isn’t the reason why I bought at The Village. “I had lived in my flat out of the area for 13 years. I started working for Persimmon a year-and-a-half ago and just fell in love with The Village.

“As is always the case with Persimmon, it’s a really great product. They are spacious houses and it’s a fantastic location just 20 minutes from the city. “I think the fact that I’ve bought a house here gives my clients real confidence. Everything we sell here is off plan so they have to trust what we’re telling them. It gives them that bit of extra reassurance.” Mum-of-one Naysha said The Village was proving very popular with a wide range of people. She said: “It’s a very popular site. Some weeks we have sold as many as five properties. “It’s been popular with commuters and young families. There is a real mix of properties, anything from one bedroom to five bedroom.” The Village is just off Aveley Bypass and is made up of 340 homes, of which 51 are apartments. The Government’s Help to Buy scheme is available on selected plots and the Persimmon Homes Part Exchange Scheme can also be used by people who want to sell a property with less hassle. Norman Sharpe, sales director at Persimmon Homes Essex, said: “This is a wonderful development which really does have something for everyone. I’m really pleased that Naysha has found her perfect home and is settling in well.” Aveley is a small suburban town within the borough of Thurrock in Essex. It is just 16 miles from Charing Cross in London and within the eastern bounds of the M25 motorway. South Ockendon and Purfleet railway stations provide transport links directly into the City of London within approximately 30 and 40 minutes. ESSEX BUILDER DONATES CASH TO HELP DEMENTIA SUFFERERS A leading Essex house builder has donated £1,000 to help dementia sufferers when they visit hospital. The Southend Hospital Charity has received the windfall from Persimmon Homes Essex as part of its Community Champions project, which will see a pot of £24,000 being given to support local groups and charities over the next 12 months. The charity will use the money for its dementia appeal to make visiting Southend Hospital a less confusing and stressful experience for those with the condition. A host of items will be bought to help, including easy to read clocks, memory boxes, MP3 players, televisions and conversation cards. Elise Fleetwood, of the charity, said: “We are extremely grateful for this generous donation from Persimmon Homes Essex.

“It is important that the needs of dementia patients are catered for, starting with standardising care throughout the hospital. “We would like to begin raising money for our three elderly wards, day assessment unit and Princess Anne ward, which all have patients with dementia.” Norman Sharpe, from Persimmon Homes Essex, said the Community Champions initiative was a way of supporting people across every city, town and village where the company works. He said: “We are very proud to hand over this donation to the Southend Hospital Charity, which is an extremely worthy cause. “They have a clear plan about how they are going to make hospital visits less daunting for those with dementia, which really made their application stand out from the dozens received.” The Persimmon Community

Champions initiative is a national programme where charities and groups can apply for funding up to the value of £1,000 to match money they have already raised themselves. Nationwide the company will donate a total of £750,000. Norman said: “We’ve made it really simple to apply for funding, and we’re urging groups and charities to apply for next month’s donation by completing an online form at www.persimmonhomes. com/charity.” Persimmon Essex has developments across the county, including in East Tilbury, Colchester, Grays, South Ockendon, Frinton and Romford. T

he Rotary Club of Colchester has received the windfall from Persimmon Homes Essex as part of its Community Champions project, which will see a pot of £24,000 being given to support local groups and charities over the next 12 months. The Rotary Club will use the cash to help the Holidays For Heroes Jersey charity, which it has supported since 2010. H4HJ provides holidays for individuals who have served with the 16 Air Assault Brigade, based in Colchester. Each holiday consists of a week in Jersey, including free flights, accommodation, board and a small amount of spending money. The Rotary Club of Colchester wants to support the charity for another five years. David Casey, of the Rotary Club, said: “We are extremely grateful for this generous donation from Persimmon Homes Essex. “With the Brigade now out of a war zone, they are still one the UK’s first lines of defence and as a club we believe that the need for support will not be reduced. “We are committed to the wellbeing of the military personnel and their families serving with 16 Air Assault Brigade.” Norman Sharpe, from Persimmon Homes Essex, said the Community Champions initiative was a way of supporting people across every city, town and village where the company works. He said: “We are very proud to hand over this donation to the Rotary Club of Colchester, which is an extremely worthy cause. “The work the club does with the Holidays For Heroes Jersey charity is very commendable and it’s great that they honour this region’s military personnel in this way.” The Persimmon Community Champions initiative is a national programme where charities and groups can apply for funding up to the value of £1,000 to match money they have already raised themselves. Over 50s in the South East reveal highs and lows of being a Grandlord Over 50s flock to buy-to-let for high returns, but landlording is not without its challenges, research of 10,141 over 50s reveals “Buy-to-let is an increasingly popular investment for the over 50s, particularly in the current financial climate but clearly it is not without challenges.”

B

ritain’s Saga generations are laying claim to the buy-to-let market and many are reaping the financial rewards in the process, although doing so is not without its challenges according to new research from Saga Landlord Insurance. Nearly one in ten (8%) over 50s in the South East are now taking advantage of the opportunities property rental offers* and those considering becoming “grandlords” have reason to feel optimistic, as on average over 50s estimate that they make £741 profit a month from letting a property. However, success is not guaranteed as over one in ten (11%) said they were just breaking even or making a loss.

Over a third (35%) respondents in the South East became “grandlords” in the last five years and while some people think being a landlord is tougher than they had expected (27%), 8% said they found it easier than they thought they would. This may be because only 44% actually bought the property with the specific purpose of renting it out as one in seven (15%) inherited the property and 5% purchased it for a child or grandchild to live in at university, who has since moved out. Grandlording does cause some day-to-day worries. The top concerns are renting the property out to bad tenants (37%) and managing the property as you get older (20%). And perhaps people are right to have some worries as a previous Saga survey showed that almost a third (30%)** had experienced problems with tenants paying rent, a quarter (25%) had experienced damage to the property and one in ten (10%) had needed to take legal action against tenants. While Saga Landlord Insurance addresses some of these concerns, it has also produced a guide to help people who are landlords or are thinking of becoming one. The guide offers top tips on deciding whether grandlording is right for you, how to pick good tenants and when it is the right time to increase tenants rent. A specialist landlord insurance policy, such as that offered by Saga, can help protect against the many risks of renting out a property. This can include cover for malicious damage, unlimited legal advice and optional rent guarantee to provide peace of mind.

Sue Green, Head of Landlord and Home Insurance, Saga says: “Buy-to-let is an increasingly popular investment for the over 50s, particularly in the current financial climate but clearly it is not without challenges. The recently announced cuts to tax relief for buy-to-let landlords, for example, are a new factor that people will have to take into account when deciding whether to start letting a property.” “Our research shows that, while landlords are largely positive about their decision, they are also likely to face practical and financial hurdles. This is why we have developed a guide that provides practical advice to grandlords, helping to address the most commonly raised concerns and giving them peace of mind so they can focus on enjoying their retirement.” For more information on Saga Landlord Insurance call 0800 302 9705 or for more information please visit www.saga.co.uk/grandlord

Emmerdale’s Sammy Pens a Royal Adventure Story for her Daughter Actress Sammy Winward is famous for her role as Katie Sugden in the ITV soap, Emmerdale. Since leaving, Sammy has been busy writing a book for children about a time-travelling princess, Phoebe, which is dedicated to her own real-life princess – her ten-year-old daughter, Mia.

S

AMMY said: “It’s been a great journey on Emmerdale for the last fourteen years. But now I would like explore other things. “I have always been passionate about history and, had I not pursued a career as an actress, my chosen destiny would have been a historian.” In Princess Phoebe Meets the Tudors, Sammy presents a historically accurate snapshot of Tudor princesses. With the success of films like Frozen in mind, Sammy has written the book to be accessible to younger readers. “All girls love Disney movies, but there is another side to being a princess,” explains Sammy. “I have always worried that, particularly as young females, we are brought up on a rich diet of fairy tale princesses, whose single destiny seems to be that of meeting a handsome prince and living happily ever after. “I have tried to do something very different, while still retaining the

magic of these stories.” The book presents female characters as strong and self aware. But Sammy’s exhilarating tales are also balanced with the awfulness of Tudor life. History tells us that Elizabeth I was locked away from most of childhood. How did this affect her? And what about Anne Boleyn, beheaded at the behest of Henry VIII? Sammy’s book magically divulges the secrets of these princesses, right up to the bitter end! Sammy has always loved the stories of royal folk, but now feels the time is right for some historical accuracy. “My daughter is fascinated by tales of princesses and our house is steeped in history, dating back to the 1400s and was once inhabited by a character called Bertine d’Entwistle, who rode out with fifteen archers from the house to fight for Henry V at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415.” Sammy adds: “I hope this book will encourage children to embrace history as much as I did when I was a child.”

Many celebrities have put pen to paper to write popular kids books. Some celebs make their stories autobiographical, while others have wild imaginations. Either way, kids books written by famous people can be enjoyable for the entire family.

Beautifully illustrated by Eric Heyman Princess Phoebe Meets the Tudors collects the stories of Anne Boleyn, Jane Grey, Mary I and Elizabeth I, and presents them in an accessible way for the twenty-first century readers. Along the way Phoebe discovers that female empowerment is not just

Beauty Is Your Makeup Agin LIFESTYLE

Many women love makeup, but most don’t want to look ‘made up’.

T

HE right antiaging SPF makeup – applied correctly - can give skin a nearly perfect finish while shielding it from the sun’s intense rays. However, many of these products contain ingredients such as harsh synthetic fragrances and preservatives, which can increase skin sensitivity over time and even cause allergic reactions, making the skin appear dull and much older than it is. Here are some tips for selecting the SPF foundation that most naturally flatters your skin at every age.

Makeup Do’s and Don’ts Don’t: Wear an unnatural foundation mask. Prevent the mask effect by making sure your foundation matches your skin’s natural undertones and blend around the jaw line down to the neck with your fingertips, a foundation brush

or a sponge. Do: Apply the majority of your foundation in the centre of your face, under the eyes and around the nose and mouth, blending out towards the planes of the cheeks, forehead and chin. This will help concentrate the most product around the areas of the face where many of us have dark circles and

redness, which require the most coverage. Don’t: Rely on heavy liquid makeup. Heavy foundations, which are frequently suggested for mature skin types, are commonly formulated with ingredients like mineral oil. Steer clear of such products, they exacerbate acne and further clog congested pores, which

makes skin appear less radiant. Also, be careful not to confuse what may be makeup-related breakouts with hormonal acne. Do: Look for an oil-free SPF makeup because oilfree formulas tend to look more like actual skin and feel “breathable”. Tip: Just because there’s no oil in it doesn’t mean the product is not

OSS of youthful colour naturally occurs as we age due to a change in the balance of pigment activity. Over time, skin loses its inner radiance as a dull, grey cast drapes over the face. hydrating or unsuitable for dry skin types. Look for hydration-binding ingredients, such as sodium hyaluronate, which draws water from the air and onto skin for lasting moisture. Tip: Those with dryer skin types can also add 1-3 drops of their favourite Omega-3 rich oil to skin right before

makeup application. This will serve to infuse skin with protective antioxidants and impart a luminous glow almost instantly. Don’t: Partially cleanse. Invest in a good quality liquid cleanser and make sure to thoroughly remove all traces of makeup at the end of the day. Tip: A sea sponge is an ideal tool for removing all traces of makeup, including stubborn eye makeup (like mascara) which exacerbates the appearance of under-eye circles. Do: Choose makeup that’s non-comedogenic (will not clog pores). If any irritation or sensitivity occurs, discontinue the use of that product. Breakouts should be examined before they are deemed a bad sign, as some skincare products have a “detoxifying” effect on the skin, which can result in some short-term breakouts, while the overall skin

improves. Don’t: Use harsh grains, “scrubs” or abrasive pads. These can disturb the skin and produce age-accelerating inflammation. Don’t over wash skin or use a cleanser that makes your skin feel ‘tight’ immediately after cleansing. Do: If you have uneven texture and are oily in the T-zone, use a liquid cleanser containing the combination of Alpha lipoic acid and DMAE, which work together to normalise overactive oil glands and help diminish the appearance of enlarged pores over time, making skin appear smoother and more even. This smoother “canvas” makes a big difference in how long and evenly makeup wears. And remember, makeup can only go so far. Think of it as a way to accentuate and protect your healthy skin, rather than a way to mask it.

On a plate… Matthew Hill, Head Chef at Down Hall Country House Hotel with

Matthew first joined Down Hall luxury Essex hotel near Bishop’s Stortford, as a junior sous chef 10 years ago, then spread his culinary wings to London to gain experience in some of the capital’s best restaurants including Tom Aikens Restaurant in Chelsea, and Bleeding Heart in Farringdon.

H

E is now back in the kitchen as Down Hall’s head chef overseeing all food and beverage operations including running the 66-cover restaurant The Grill Room, the 180-cover private dining suites, popular for weddings, room service for the 99 bedrooms and devising a new health-focused menu for the brand new Eden Spa. Matthew comments: “It’s an absolute pleasure to return to Down Hall as head chef. I’ve worked in some incredible restaurants across the country over the years but, having grown up in this area, Down Hall feels like home. “I’m excited to be shaping our new, seasonal menus and feel proud to be part of a hotel that is so well-respected by the local community.”

What is your first food memory?

I have many early food memories but one that really sticks out is my dad cooking steak and chips. He rarely cooked but when he did it was special. He would spend hours in the kitchen and every last piece of equipment was used. The dish was great like we were eating in a restaurant, we had peppercorn sauce, garlic mushrooms, grilled tomato, oven cook chips and of course a beautiful medium rare steak.

Who has influenced your cooking the most? I would say in the beginning it was the likes of Marco Pierre White, Gordon Ramsey and

my wife! Fresh vegetables too, so a stir fry can be made at a moment’s notice.

Your worst kitchen nightmare?

Years ago my worst kitchen nightmare has actually Mattthew Hill happened. We were sending a function for 40 people and the trolley that was holding the main course fell over at the reception desk Raymond Blanc who I and onto the floor. Needless to say we had was fortunate enough to move fast to resolve the issue but we to cook for not long sent a complimentary sorbet course ago, more recently i have to buy us some time and recooked the taken a lot of influences whole main course. Where did it all begin?

It all started with going to North Herts College to give me a real grounding in catering, after that my first job was with a great chef called Mark Jordan at the Pink Geranium, another big influence on my career, who opened my eyes to world of fine dining.

Who are your favourite chefs?

Raymond Blanc is a real hero in my eyes also Rene Redzepi & Tom Kerridge are inspirational.

What is your favourite dish?

One of my favourite dishes of all time is the classic French onion soup

What is your favourite herb?

I love to use herbs in my dishes and my favourites are thyme and basil which we grow in the grounds of the hotel. Both are so versatile and translate well from savoury to sweet dishes.

HILST many golfers associate premier links golf with Scotland and Ireland, Essex has a long golfing heritage. In 1896 James Braid became the professional at Romford Golf Club and the five-times Open Champion can take much credit for popularising golf and designing many fine courses in Essex. Sir Henry Cotton also designed many courses. The Essex Golf Union was inaugurated in 1924 with 23 founding clubs. Today there are 80 clubs affiliated to the Essex Union playing over approximately 90 courses. In

It’s tee time in Es Forget the stereotypical image of Essex Girl and Boy – the rich tradition of golf in Essex dates back over a century and today the county is home to dozens of courses to explore and enjoy.

2009 Essex won the English Men’s County Championship. THORNDON PARK GOLF CLUB near Brentwood has consistently been voted as the number one course in the county. It was created in 1920 by the legendary golf architect

Harry Shapland Colt on a deer park dating back to the 1580’s. The deer park was already rich with oaks from the 16th century – some of which survive to this day. The Hall was designed by James Paine and completed in 1770, as a home for the Petre family, who lived there until 1919. George III was entertained here in 1778 and Lancelot “Capability” Brown laid out a park that was the finest in the county. Ravaged by fire in 1878, Thorndon Hall was offered a new lease of life in 1919 when a group of businessmen saw the grounds as the perfect place for a golf course and for developing a residential estate

similar to the one planned for St George’s Hill at Weybridge. ORSETT GOLF CLUB was founded in 1899; this magnificent championship course designed by James Braid was firmly embedded into this piece of the Essex countryside. In the early years Orsett became the focal point for the local community to gather and enjoy their golf; even through the hard times of two world

wars. In recent years Orsett has established itself as a regional qualifying course for The Open Championship on 11 occasions. Situated very close to the A414 and within 12 miles of the M25 IS CHELMSFORD GOLF CLUB. The established parkland course measures 5996 yards-par 68-and is always in excellent condition and provides a challenging and enjoyable test for golfers of all abilities – the holes routed cleverly across a valley. Designed by Harry Colt it was opened in 1920 and it has thrived ever since. WEST ESSEX in North Chingford was designed by James Braid and opened in 1900, ‘The West’ boasts

one of the finest traditional championship parkland courses in the area, winding its way through Epping Forest with spectacular views of the London skyline. The undulating fairways and the superb greens present golfers of all levels with a challenging but fair test. Set in 240 acres of beautiful parklands with breathtaking views of the Essex Countryside, ABRIDGE is home to some of the major amateur golf tournaments including The South East Regional Open Qualifier. To complement the 18 holes par 72 championship course there are extensive practice facilities including a driving range, 18 hole Putting Green, Chipping area, Practice Bunkers and a par 3 course. ROMFORD GOLF CLUB is a private members – owned club, founded in 1894 and

designed by Open Champion James Braid. The Club, which has been used as a Qualifying venue for ‘The Open’, with its tree lined fairways, beautiful greens and ‘infamous bunkers’ it is the ideal golf

terrain for young and old alike. FRINTON GOLF CLUB, Essex is a seaside course that provides a fine test of golf. At 6,265 yards, Frinton is not excessively long by modern standards and, at first glance, the open fairways with their lack of trees may seem unchallenging, but this is

certainly not the whole story. The fast, firm, undulating greens test the best putters. Tidal ditches cross many fairways requiring accurately placed shots. The trademark of the links course, the ever-changing sea breeze, demands careful club selection on every hole. Since opening for play in 1907, THORPE HALL has proved to be a fair but stimulating test for golfers of all abilities. Although modest in length by the standards of modern course design, recent additional fairway bunkers give longer hitters pause for thought while the ever present mature trees that line the majority of the fairways provide the main defence of the course against all players. A wayward tee shot into the trees can often be costly on the scorecard. For more on golf in Essex and its attractions, visit www.visitessex.co.uk

Here come the girls!…. If you thought rugby was just a sport for men, then think again. Participation in women’s rugby has doubled in the past 10 years and the England women’s team won the World Cup last autumn. Keen to attract even more women to the game, England Rugby have launched their new women and girls programme ‘ Pitch up and Play.’ Women will be encouraged to play to their strengths whether they’re fast, agile, tall or strong, Pitch up and Play empowers women to unleash their inner toughness and unites all as Rugby Women. The key focus is encouraging women into the sport with inclusive, enjoyable and informative sessions, whether they’re brand new to

rugby, a sofa supporter or a returning player. With an introduction to tackling, Pitch up and Play also includes skills, fitness and match play. Women’s Rugby World Cup winner Natasha Hunt, says: “ England Rugby are hoping to get 10,000 more women into the sport by 2017 so we’ve launched these friendly Pitch up and Play sessions and are calling upon women who might currently go to the gym, take part in obstacle course races or who perhaps want to become more active to give rugby a go, regardless of age, ability or previous experience. The sessions are free and provide a fantastic introduction to new comers, so bring a friend, family member or colleague to give Rugby a try!” ‘Pitch up and Play’ sessions run throughout the year, visit: www. englandrugby.com/ rugbywomen for more information.

XPOSURE to extreme temperatures, wet weather or just a plain old rough and tumble can dry skin out. Dove Men + Care talks to British Rugby star George North about what he does to keep skin hydrated and protected… When it comes to keeping my face feeling soft and smooth, I use Dove Men + Care Hydrate + Shave Cream (£2.99) Unlike other traditional shaving gels, it protects my skin from razor irritation, and helps to give me a superior clean, close shave. If my skin is feeling particularly worn, especially in the winter, I always use Dove Men+Care Hydrate +Post Shave Balm (£5.79). It’s light to the touch and helps to relieve any burning and irritation, and leaves my skin feeling comfortable and hydrated. After a match, I like to keep my skin hydrated and fresh which is always needed after a tough game. Dove Men + Care Shave Care products are available now nationwide including Boots, boots.com and amazon.co.uk

Eddington Suit, £199 from selected stores nationwide and online www.tmlewin.co.uk

Welsh rugby stars; Sam Warburton, Rhys Webb and George North recently swapped muddy shorts for sharp suits in an exclusive photo shoot for T.M.Lewin. Meeting at the Welsh squad’s training ground in Cardiff, the players arrived to be photographed in the new and official WRU team suit, shirt and tie - all provided by Britain’s best known Jermyn Street shirt maker and tailor. When they’re battling on the pitch, the Welsh team will be wearing their new Eddington Suit for all official engagements as part of a partnership deal that’s in place until 2018. While maintaining 275lbs of muscle power is always going to be a challenge, finding the right suit wasn’t, with most players opting for T.M.Lewin’s best selling Eddington Slim Fit. A great all-rounder for most body shapes, the slim tailored jacket and gently tapered trousers give it a closer, narrower fit than the classic Regular Fit. Unsurprisingly there were no candidates for the most recent new addition to the T.M.Lewin’s ever-expanding tailoring collection, the contemporary Skinny Fit Suit - admittedly not designed with the rippling rugby thigh in mind. @tmlewin www.facebook.com/T.M.Lewin www.youtube.com/TMLewinOFFTHECUFF

In both War and Peace

Essex is forever fascinating

F

ROM the Boudicca-led Celtic revolt against Roman rule in AD61 to the Cold War, for over two millennia. Essex has provided the backdrop to bloody struggles, ill-starred rebellions and bold redoubt in the face of over-whelming odds. Nearly 2000 years ago, Boudicca – Queen of the Iceni tribe – became forever associated with Essex, after her forces attacked the city of Camulodunum, now Colchester, and what was then the Roman capital of Britain. Colchester Castle was built on the foundations of the Romans’ Temple of Claudius by the invading Normans after 1066 and today reveals many fascinating layers of history to visitors. Some of the most powerful women of the Middle Ages owned Hadleigh Castle. The romantic ruins of the former hunting base of Colchester Castle Edward I and royal retreat of Edward III had once been an impressive fortress built to repel French invaders during the 100 Years War. During the reign of Henry VIII, Hadleigh was gifted to Catherine of Aragon, Anne of Cleves and Catherine Parr. Today you can explore what remains of the castle and the beautiful Hadleigh Country Park where you can try one of the UK’s top

mountain bike courses, explore idyllic countryside, enjoy magnificent views, picnic and spot wildlife. Tudor associations abound in Essex. Further down the Thames Estuary from Osea Island Hadleigh Castle, is Tilbury Fort, where Elizabeth I famously rallied her forces in the face of the oncoming Armada in July 1588 with her famous speech “I know I have the body but of a weak and feeble woman; but I have the heart and stomach of a king.” Stow Maries Aerodrome, near Maldon, is the last surviving World War I airfield anywhere in the world, and was originally created to combat German Zeppelin raids and bombing attacks from its Gotha aircraft. Many of the original buildings Stow Maries are still in situ and several have been faithfully restored to their original wartime condition. The airfield still plays host to visiting aircraft from the WW1 era and the museum gives a fascinating insight into this

important and now unique aspect of our Great War heritage. The natural topography of Essex was also used to our advantage during the First World War. Osea Island, sitting in the Blackwater estuary, was used as a secret base by the Navy for a squadron of Motor Torpedo Boats. These small, fast and highly manoeuvrable craft were used to hunt down submarines in the Baltic, or bases on enemyoccupied coasts before swiftly returning back to Essex. Today Osea Island is well known as a luxury holiday and event island, and for its starring role in horror film The Woman in Black In the 1950’s the huge underground Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker – that could house up to 600 military and civilian personnel, possibly even the Prime Minister – was built with the purpose of organising the survival of the population in the awful aftermath of a nuclear war. Since being decommissioned in 1992, the bunker has been open to the public as a tourist attraction, with a museum focusing on its Cold War history. For more information about all the places mentioned and other places of historical interest in Essex, go to www.visitessex.com.

New Sportage breaks cover

K

IA has revealed the first official exterior images of the allnew Kia Sportage, featuring a dynamic and strong new design. The all-new Sportage made its global debut at the Frankfurt International Motor Show on September 15, 2015. Entering its fourthgeneration, the all-new Kia Sportage features a bold, progressive design, with the vehicle’s designers creating a sense of power and agility

from every angle. Echoing the contrast of smooth and sharp shapes found on some of the most iconic modern fighter jets, the Sportage creates visual harmony out of the tension between sharp, defined feature lines and smooth surfacing. The ‘face’ of the all-new Sportage represents the biggest change to the car’s design, with the car’s headlamps no longer integrated with the grille for the new model, instead sweeping back along the outer edges of the

more sharply-detailed bonnet and bolder wheel arches. Immediately recognisable as a Kia, the Sportage’s lower, wider ‘tigernose’ grille adds more volume to the lower half of the Sportage’s face, resulting in a more imposing appearance and a more stable-looking stance. The all-new Sportage is characterised by its sportier, more raked profile. From the side, the all-new Sportage retains the sweptback silhouette of the

New Kia Sportage unveiled at Frankfurt Motor Show outgoing model, with a roofline that tapers slightly towards the rear of the car, longer front overhangs, shorter rear overhangs and longer wheelbase.

Smooth bodywork, bolder wheel arches and sharp lines endow the Sportage with a more dynamic, muscular look. At the rear, the

Show debut for new Mégane TWENTY years after the launch of the Renault Mégane, which sold over 6.5 million units worldwide, Renault is updating its family car and has revealed a new Mégane, the fourth car to carry that name. In a highly competitive segment, the new Mégane stands out with its dynamic styling and distinctive lighting signature both at the front and at the rear. The latest Mégane range is topped by a GT version, which will be available from launch, and whose design is inspired by Renaultsport. With its distinctive lighting signature and balanced proportions, the new Mégane is first and foremost a Renault. It adopts the brand’s design DNA

with broad, sculpted shoulders and a front face incorporating the brand’s new design identity, including a large, vertical Renault diamond. New Mégane boasts a specific lighting signature at the front with, C-shaped headlamps whose surround continues into the bumper. At the rear, the new lighting signature, visible by both day and night, goes right across the car to increase the perceived width of the vehicle. “On the highly competitive market of compact saloons, it was vital that New Mégane should stand out right from the first glance,” said exterior designer Franck Le Gall. At 25mm lower in front with track 47mm wider in front and 39mm wider

Renault’s new Mégane

at the rear compared to the third generation Mégane, it sits squarely on the road. Its proportions are those of a sporty silhouette with a wheelbase 28mm longer and a shorter overhang. Chromed elements emphasise the top of the belt line and enhance the grille, the side badges and door handles. The slim creases on the bonnet, combined with the chrome beading and side air scoops, strengthen the character of the front face. The GT model has a front bumper redesigned to express a more sporty personality. It incorporates a broader air intake and the new grill has a honeycomb design. At the rear, the design of the GT is underscored by two chromed tailpipes that echo the air scoops further to the front and frame a spoiler inspired by the world of F1, plus “Renaultsport” badging at the rear, on the wings and at the front. This sports version will be available with new Iron Blue paintwork, combined with Dark Metal touches at the front and on the body-coloured door mirrors to emphasise its affinity with the world of GT motoring. New Mégane GT also has 18inch aluminium wheels developed especially for the model by Renaultsport. The new Mégane, will get its first airing in public at the Frankfurt Motor Show this week.

horizontal forms and surface volume emphasise the car’s width and give the compact SUV a more stable appearance. Inspired by the

2013 Kia Provo concept car, the slim combination lamps are joined by a strip that runs the width of the rear, while turn signals and reversing

lights are separated, relocated lower down to add more visual weight and a greater sense of stability to the lower half of the car.

PARENTS CAR BUYING INFLUENCED BY KIDS MORE than three quarters of parents (78%) claim that having kids forced them to buy a new car. And nearly four in ten (37%) say that children go on to influence decisions to buy their next car. These were the key finding of research carried out for Auto Trader, the UK’s largest digital automotive marketplace, in August, pooling the views of 1,000 parents and children aged between 5 and 11. The aims were to look at what parents and children looked for in their perfect family car – and to what extent children influenced their parents’ buying decision. Findings pointed to a number of differences in the success of pester power. More than half of Londoners, for example (55%), said they were likely to be influenced by their children, compared with just 24% in the North East. When it comes to the sexes, the research suggests dads should probably be the target of lobbying. 39% of dads said they were open to influence compared with 33% of mums.

“A substantial amount of research has been done looking at how the decision of the car buyer can be influenced and at what stage in the buying journey,” commented Nathan Coe of Auto Trader, “but few have really considered the role that children play, or the influence of pester power. “If one of the kids doesn’t like the shape or colour of your next car, or it doesn’t come with plug-in for an i-Pad, then you’d better be prepared for some serious pestering!” Overall, colour is the most likely area for successful persuasion by children (26% influenced their parents’ choice of colour). Children are most likely to push for red (28%), followed by blue (21%), black (14%) and pink (13%). Perhaps unsurprisingly boys tend to favour red cars (28% v 23%) and girls preferred pink (26% v 1%). However, only 2% said they’d prefer a white car, despite white being the most popular new car colour, according to SMMT new car sales data.

DS oozes ‘avant garde’ styling

A

BOUT a year ago, PSA, the French group that includes Peugeot and Citroen, announced that its Citroen DS models would become a brand in their own right. Now, therefore, we have, simply, DS. No-one seems able to say what, if anything, DS stands for. It was first seen on the Citroen model DS in the fifties, and an interesting suggestion I heard recently was that the French word for goddess sounds the same as when you say DS as they would in France: day-ess. The DS people simply sum it all up as ‘the spirit of avantgarde’. The difference between the Citroen DS5 and the new DS 5 is mainly at the front end. This of course had to be redesigned to remove the Citroen chevron insignia. New colours have been introduced, including the darkest of dark blues – very subtle. A particularly striking feature is the chrome ‘sabres’ that sweep from the windscreen along the bonnet sides.

TEST DRIVE

CHRIS MANNING The DS has ‘scrolling’ indicator LEDs that seems to be the current fashion in the more expensive cars. Overall, you could say that the DS is one of the most stylish cars around. It is quite different to anything else on the road and the interior is equally unique, although little different to older Citroen DS5s. Anyone who has got into a DS 5, old or new, immediately remarks on how they might be sitting in an aeroplane. This is because of the array of switchgear in the ceiling; there are even a pair of overhead lockers to complete the analogy. There’s no doubt that the DS interiors will help to sell these cars. There’s a choice of three leathers, including a most attractive ‘watchstrap’ seat design. The seven-inch touchscreen has allowed the removal of twelve previous control buttons, but it all takes some learning.

But is the DS more style than substance? On test was the DS5 Prestige Blue HDi with a 2.0-litre diesel engine developing 150hp and 370Nm of pulling-power torque which hustles it along to 0-60 in 10.9 seconds, so on initial impressions of a strong engine performance and slick-action six-speed manual gearbox, the

substance is pretty good so far. As a driver, you really do feel enclosed by the wrap-around cockpit and overhead aeroplane-style switchgear certainly set the DS5 apart on the inside as well as outside. The seats have a nice figure-hugging shape to them and adjust to a multitude of positions, electrically of course. The three-part glass sunroof lets extra light in the interior, which is necessary as the low roofline limits side glazing area. I surprisingly found reversing easy as the window shape at the rear has very little blinds spots, although on the minus side the big rear window spoiler cuts rear vision and you can lose cars in its bulky width. Out on the road the ride was comfortable with no major dramas, but I would personally love to see this DS5 fitted with Citroen’s famed hydraulic suspension system, which first made its debut on the original

DS back in 1955. Over a week long test I covered nearly 300 miles and with the official factory combined figure of 68.9 mpg was happy to see the onboard computer showing a more real-life figure of 50.9 mpg over a mixture of town and A-road traffic. I gradually got used the 7in touchscreen which controls a primary functions, but am still not happy with this system which is finding its way into

more a more new cars from all manufacturers as I find at times when driving solo I am taking my eyes off the road for more time than I would like. The DS5 is an incredibly stylish car. I can take or leave alloy wheels, but even these 18in Adelaide grey ones fitted even took my eye. Full marks to Citroen for separating DS into luxury/executive and for owners wanting something different it has the style to do it.

GOODWOOD REVIVAL

The JD Classics entered Jaguar E-Type took victory in the hour-long RAC TT Celebrartion race

JD Classics complete a treble at Revival

M

ALDON-based JD Classics, one of the leading classic car restoration and racing companies had a superb weekend at the Goodwood Revival with three out of six of their race-prepared cars taking the victory laurels at this spectacular event. Now one of the major sponsors at the Revival, they got their winning streak off to a flying start by taking victory in the Freddie March Memorial Trophy race, with managing director Derek Hood partnering Chris Ward in the 90 minute race in a 1954 Cooper-Jaguar T33, which was run into the gloom of Friday evening at the first day of the three-day extravangza of historic motorsport. They kept up the tempo of race wins on Saturday by taking another victory in the Fordwater Trophy race with two 1950 Jaguar XK120s. John Young qualified on pole position and took the chequered flag, while Derek Hood brought the second XK120 home in eighth place. In the hour long Blue Riband event RAC TT Celebration race on Sunday, they made it three wins when the JD Classics entered Jaguar E-Type took the chequered flag. Chris Ward started the race on the front row of the grid after qualifying third, and took the lead in the first few laps of the race to build a 16 second cushion before handing over to the second

driver during the mandatory driver change. Taking the wheel was British Touring Car driver Gordon Sheddon, who managed to keep hold of the lead and bring the1963 Jaguar home to a well deserved and hard fought victory for the team. In the final race of the weekend they had a chance to make it four wins as they entered two cars, with Chris Ward, second in qualifying in a Lister Jagaur Costin and Andrew Smith in a Jaguar D-Type for the Sussex Trophy race. Smith retired after 12 laps, but Ward took the lead early in the race only for his gearbox to lose a gear denting his pace and had to settle for second place at the chequered flag Joining the Essex contingent at the Revival was Great Dunmow racing driver Shaun Lynn, father of high-flying GP2 racer Alex. Running three cars, all with the race number 13, his luck ran out during the Whitsun trophy race when he crashed his Gulf-liveried Ford GT40 heavily into the tyre barrier on the 13th lap causing the race to be red flagged. Thankfully Lynn was not injured in the heavy shunt and the car suffered only panel damage and will be ready to race again next weekend at the Spa Francorchamps circuit in Belgium. In the two-race St Mary’s Trophy for production-based saloon cars raced from 1960 to

Green leads the way for Colts ALTHOUGH the competitive season ended last week there were a few more friendlies and the Colts Presentations left before Chelmsford call it a day for 2015. Confirmation of results on Sunday filtered through, to show that Waltham had lost. That result meant that Chelmsford’s tally of 100 points could not be overhauled. Congratulations to James Clifford who led his side to the title in his first year as captain. The success was further bolstered at the end of the week with the inaugural Colt’s Presentation Day. The usual evening event was replaced with an afternoon activity day followed by speeches and presentations. This was a tremendous success and thanks must go principally to Sue Lawrence for getting this going but there was an army of fantastic help too, particularly from the Parrishs, Wrights and Tuffs. The main Colt of the Year award went to Harry Green who led the under-16s well and has had a fine season.

Other overall winners were Billy Brunger (Stan Doe Trophy for Outstanding Individual Performance); James Boyden (Most Improved Player); and Mollie Tuff and Connor O’Brien (Clubman of the Year). In the games that were played there was an excellent win at Rayleigh for a largely inexperienced side. Harry Green led the way with 74 and Ed Cole (38*) also made a useful contribution. Matt Cole picked up three wickets and Gary Chidley two to go with an innings of 36 as their score of 233 was defended with some comfort. The Sunday second team proved too strong for East Hanningfield. An excellent spell from Horne (431) had Chelmsford reeling at 74 for five. However, Jack Campion (47) and Steve Bond (64*) led the recovery to an imposing 264 for seven. Oakes looked dangerous for the home side before falling to Callum Rudd and thereafter it was a bit of a procession. Rory Skepelhorn bowled very well on both days but his only reward was a single wicket.

John Young took a win in Jaguar XK120

1966, he entered a 1963 Ford Lotus Cortina Mk1 and for the first race on Saturday, Dave Richards piloted the car and finished in 13th place. With Lynn unable to attend his qualifying session on Friday due to business commitments,

John, who is club chairman, regained the Championship title which he last won 31 years ago. In addition, he has also won the Pratt Singles and the Masters competitions. he had no choice but to line up last on the grid of 30-car field. For his race on Sunday he clawed his way up the field and finished in 12th place and with the combined result the pairing of Lynn/Richards finished in 16th overall. Lynn’s third entry was a 1958 Lister Jaguar ‘Knobbly’ which he entered for the Sussex Trophy race. Again he had to start from the back of the grid for the same reason as the previous race and as this was the last race to be held at the Revival meeting late on Sunday afternoon was determined to put on a good show. During the course of the 25-minute race he pushed hard on every lap and finished in 13th place. Report and pictures: Chris Manning

SQUASH

Essex players get behind women’s squash week ESSEX players are joining forces with squash fans in America, Canada, Barbados and Bermuda to help promote Women’s Squash Week 2015. Women in the US have staged events across the country for the past seven years promoting squash, voted the world’s healthiest sport, and have encouraged thousands of players, former players and newbies to hit the courts and give it a go. And the word is spreading with events springing up across the globe, including Ipswich Squash Club where current England development coach and former

tour professional Lauren Selby is the driving force behind a Fun tournament and exhibition, booked in for Sunday September 20, between 10am- 2pm. Lauren, now head coach at the Off The Wall Squash Academy based at Colchester Garrison, Essex, is passionate about getting more girls and women to play sport and has been a fierce campaigner and promoter of the women’s game. “Women’s Squash Week has been a great success in the States bringing women out in droves to play the game,” said Lauren. “This is not super

serious squash, so noone should be afraid to give it a go. It’ll be squash with a smile.” Players of all ages and abilities are invited to join in at the Ipswich Squash Club in Henley Road. Alongside the tournament there will be an exhibition from a couple of local well known players, as well as stalls with beauty treatments, gifts and nibbles. Entry costs £5, and that includes a T-shirt. Suffolk Sport and Active Essex are also supporting the event. For entry details, contact Karen Selby at Karen@ offthewallsquash. co.uk or call 01206 736924.

Stalemate ends with a fair draw C HANCES were few and far between for both sides and, with both keepers being relatively untroubled for the majority of the match, a draw was a fair result as the Clarets made it four unbeaten. The early stages actually saw the Clarets mostly on the back-foot with Christian Dibble being made to work inside the opening five minutes. West Ham loanee Moses Makasi looked promising in the deep-midfield role and aided the Clarets in regaining their possession and breaking with more authority. SARAH IS EURO CHAMP TEAM Falcons reigning Five Nations Full Contact Kickboxing champion Sarah Worsfold travelled to Kent recently in the Kombat Zone promotion. Sarah faced Holland’s formidable kickboxer Shanice Joefina for the IKF European Full Contact Kickboxing title. The two went to war from the off but it was Worsfold who gained advantage in the first two rounds with her superior strength. But as with any great match up Josefina took the fight back to Worsfold in the third. The fourth and fifth were equally hard fought, but the winner by unanimous decsion and new European champion was Falcons Sarah Worsfold, pictured.

Leopards start campaign ESSEX Leopards’ coach steve Ogunjimi is happy with how the pre-season has gone as his side prepare to open their National Trophy campaign at the Brentwood Centre on Friday, when the Big Cats host London Lituanica, tip-off 8pm, in their first National Trophy game of the season, and are also in action on Sunday when travel to Southwark in the Cup first round. “Everything is coming together, and we’re gelling nicely,” said Ogunjimi. “The guys are taking on the new offence I’ve put in, and although we’re still missing one or two pieces, the core group has a really positive vibe. Lituancia are a side comprising entirely of London-based Lithuanians, and they have made rapid progress through the NBL with three promotions in four years. Ogunjimi has added big men Jamie Hayes and Justin Hitchman to his roster in the last week, and the Big Cats are also hopeful that Portuguese forward Frederico Tavaras will have received international clearance in time for the game.

Hahn secures Brentwood cup win MITCH Hahn fired Brentwood Town into the FA Cup Second Qualifying Round with a brace against Arlesexy Town at The Arena. The midfielder gave Brentwood the lead with a thumping first half strike before pouncing on a goalkeeping error to extend their advantage shortly after half-time. Brentwood assumed control midway through the half and opened the scoring in the 27th minute when Hahn rifled a 20-yard drive beyond the outstretched arm of Nick

Thompson and into the top corner. The visitors made a positive start to the second half and had it not been for some poor finishing they may have had an early equaliser. However, their bright start was cut short 10 minutes in when Hahn scored his second of the afternoon. The midfielder was alert enough to intercept Thompson’s throw out to left-back Sam Willett and he made his way into the box before cooly slotting the ball low into the bottom corner.

stoppage time and Aiden Palmer almost converted the long-throw, volleying narrowly over. That brought first-half proceedings to a close with the two sides evenly matched, and it was clear from then on that it may be a match that saw little in the way of goalmouth action. Wealdstone then removed their lone striker in place of a winger – a move that perplexed some on the terraces – before Lee Sawyer struck a shot off target following excellent hold-up play by Bricknell on the wing. Bricknell turned provider again to tee-up substitute Tomi Adeloye, but the former Stoke City frontman saw his half-volley deflected and cleared. The game became stretched in the final stages with both sides committing men to attack but at the same time not wanting to concede a late blow. And to further show City’s unwillingness to lose, manager Mark Hawkes brought on Marvel Ekpiteta with ten minutes remaining and altered the formation to three at the back. It was a move that worked as the Clarets held on to record a valuable point. ADAM MAY

Brentwood leave it very late to seal victory BRENTWOOD made the long journey to Scottow, the home of North Walsham, in confident mood last Saturday, following the excellent win the previous week away to Old Priorians. Brentwood kicked off playing with a fairly strong wind blowing into their faces, and were quickly on the attack, with the away sides forwards dominating the early scrums. North Walsham, tried to play an open game, moving the ball through their backs at every opportunity, but excellent tackling, notably, from Stannard, Bird, and the ever

enthusiastic Mead, meant that they made little, headway. Brentwood were dominating the contact areas, with Aldous, Binet and the evergreen Metcalfe putting in some sterling work. Brentwood had their opportunities to attack, but were frustrated time and time again by some of the debatable decisions made by the referee. North Walsham scored two break-

away tries, leaving the score 14 -0 to the home side at the break. The second half began with Brentwood on the attack, and after six minutes some good inter change play between both backs and forwards captain Woodcock, dived over the line to score an excellent try which Bird duly converted. Brentwood continued to press forward and after being camped in the oppositions 22, Henry Bird raced over to score in the corner, this following further inter play between the forwards and the backs, notably Pratley and Green - 25 minutes into

the second half, Bird converted his own try with an excellent conversion from the touchline - score 14 - 14 game on. North Walsham edged in front again after 70 minutes only for Brentwood to respond with a penalty kick scored by Bird to level the score at 17 all. The game was now on a knife edge, but in the last few minutes the Brentwood backs drove the ball up the field and Simpson dived over the line to put Brentwood ahead 22 - 17, and the dependable Bird duly converted taking the final score to 17-24.
