MADE in Mourne celebrates turning ONE! COVER PHOTO: Robin McCaren, Dundrum
Happy 1st BIRTHDAY As MADE in Mourne celebrates turning ONE on 1st November, Managing Director and 'Mumpreneur' Jenna Stevenson reflects on a whirlwind year. "What an amazing year it has been. We have seen MADE in Mourne go from strength to strength. One year on and many things have been achieved. On 1st November 2017 we opened the doors with 20 local makers and 12 months on we are now proud to say we are supporting over 70 talented makers with an offering of over 600 products! We have received huge support from the local community but we are also incredibly proud to know that our handcrafted gifts have travelled the globe, as tourists from across the world have ventured to Mourne and purchased souvenirs to remind them of the beautiful Mourne Mountains and surrounding area. As well as a wonderful shop, we are also proud to host a wide variety of events in our HUB area on the first floor. There is never a dull day in 'theHUB' with Afternoon tea, Breakfast networking events, Sketching and flower arranging workshops, acoustic nights and pilates classes, just to name a few! Finally In our studio space on the top floor we are proud to have 8 Local Residents, of which 80% are female, 40% working mums and 30% start up. 'theSTUDIO' has become the heart and soul of the building and I like to refer to the Residents who use 'theSTUDIO' as the MADE in Mourne Family. We have really seen the positive effects of working in a creative co-working space. We are here to inspire our youth, to create opportunities both locally and globally. A big part of MADE in Mourne is theCOMMUNITY to show what can be done and inspire them to do the same. It has been one incredible year and I cant wait to see what is in store for MADE in Mourne in 2019. If you haven’t been in MADE in Mourne come join us."

Our Story:
How did MADE in Mourne come about? Every crowd needs someone to stand up first and say ‘Join me’. MADE in Mourne was originated by Jenna Stevenson, a young entrepreneur from Kilkeel. In 2017 Jenna, a mum of one and with a baby on the way, made the decision to move her artisan food business, that was predominantly based in Belfast, back to Kilkeel..
98 Days
From idea to reality! Kilkeel is lucky to have aerospace & fishing, however we need a broader industry base in Kilkeel and the Mourne Region, more opportunities for our children. If my generation don’t step up and make this happen, no one will. The space became available, we grabbed it despite lacking money and a plan – so we came up with a plan and a brand, set ourselves 100 days and openly said to the community ‘Join us’. And they did! 98 days later, we opened.
There is no way we could have got this done without crowd funding and crowd collaboration. Businesses, business people, tradesmen, community members, all sorts of people have stepped forward donating time, a bit of cash and things we need. It just goes to show you what can be done if the community rallies round and works together. It has been amazing to watch and made me very proud to live in the Mourne Region. This is definitely the world I want my children to grow up in! It’s a long journey ahead, but we’re off to a great start!"
We'd like to say a HUGE thank you to everyone that has supported us and in particular our Sponsors (see page 24/25)

Meet the Team GETTING TO KNOW: In MADE in Mourne we are extremely lucky to have a great team of staff who go out of their way to keep things running day to day. Throughout the next few issues of our MADE in Mourne Magazine, we'll be getting to know each and every team member and the important part they have played in our journey so far. In this edition, we get to know Chloe Magill one of our longest standing team members!
Hi Chloe, tell us a little about yourself and how you came to join the team in MADE in Mourne (MiM)? "I'm Chloe, I am 22 years old and I ive in Kilkeel, near the beautiful Silent Valley. I have known Jenna (the Managing Director) for a number of years and when I heard her plans for setting up MADE in Mourne I was really excited and wanted to know how I could get involved! I was lucky enough to be offered a job and a year later I'm still here!"
So you've been with the team from day one, can you believe MiM is ONE year old already? "No I really can't believe it! The time has flown in. It has been incredible to see the growth of MADE in Mourne since day 1. One thing which has stood out for me would have to be the increase in the number of local makers! It has been amazing to get to know them and learn all about their products."
What's it like working in MiM? Talk us through your average day. "Every day is different but I love opening up the shop in the morning and catch up with the residents as they start work. We're like a little family. Kilkeel is a small town but our customers are from all over the country and it's great to get chatting and tell the MADE in Mourne story. Anyone that knows me, will know how much I love to talk... and I love getting to know and help all of our customers."
Do you have a favourite maker? If so, who? "Oh goodness, that's really tough. I love all of our makers but If I had to choose, i'd say MamaNatureB because of my love of all things skincare".
If you could describe MiM in three words what would they be? "Inspiring, Social, Creative"

Resident Spotlight
Aimee Liz Designs Meet Aimee
One of our talented residents in MADE in Mourne! Aimee Elizabeth Glenny (nee Johnston), is the talented gal behind Aimee Liz Designs. At just 25 years of age, Aimee has lived in Kilkeel since birth but spent 4 years studying Fashion Management in Belfast and has only recently taken the leap of faith to leave her part-time jobs and focus solely on her business, with support from her family and husband Greg. Aimee is a Garment Technologist and specialises in everything from hemming and general alterations to cushions/curtains.
Being part of Made in Mourne We asked Aimee what being part of MADE in Mourne meant to her and she told us… “Made in Mourne is a colourful, inspiring environment to work in and it’s just great having a dedicated work space, as working from home can make it difficult to achieve a good work-life balance. My studio is ideal, it’s a great space, where I can interact with customers but equally shut myself away when I am under pressure to get jobs finished.”

Aimee Liz Designs is based on the ground floor at MADE in Mourne. To ensure availability we would advise calling Aimee directly in advance. She’s a busy bee! www.aimeelizdesigns.com aimeelizdesigns@hotmail.com 07510357504

COVER PHOTO
MOURNEphotographers is a collaboration group of local amateur and professional photographer in the Mourne region.
Photographer: Robin McCaren Photo 1: Murlough Bay looking towards the Mournes "This particular photograph was taken on the morning of Saturday 20 October. As you can see, I was lucky enough to be there when the Murlough Bay Rowing Club were launching one of their boats. I just liked what I saw! The photograph was taken using my iPhone SE, which just goes to prove that you do not need to have an expensive camera to take a reasonable photograph. It is often about being in the right place at the right time. I hope that this is the information that you need."
Photo 2: "Bog Cotton and Bearnagh"
"The photo was taken on 16/7/17. I am standing on the slopes of Slieve Loughshannagh, where the Bog Cotton was, and the two mountains are Slieve Meelbeg and Slieve Bearnagh. I always have my camera with me when I go out, and I usually use it to harass butterflies in places like Murlough Nature Reserve and Tollymore Forest. But once in a while I like to challenge myself by taking on some higher ground. So on this day I got the Mourne Rambler to dump me at Ott car park. I made my way back to Newcastle over a couple of mountain peaks and through Tollymore Forest.
I think Bog Cotton is a fascinating plant, and I have photographed it many times. What I wanted to do it in this photo is place it firmly in the Mournes, so I hope I achieved that by having the recognisable features of the Mourne Wall and Bearnagh in the background.
Photographer: Liam O'Hara
Photo 3: Â Newcastle Beach "My plan was to catch the sunset as I had a fair idea it would be a decent one. I wedged my tripod into the sand to steady it and went for a long exposure too but had no filter - but it turned out I didnt need one as the flow and ebb of the water was perfect. At one stage the water came in that quick my shoes got soaked." (Photo taken on Newcastle beach at approx 6pm with Canon 750d and 10-18mm lens) Photographer: Anita Ni Grainn

Jacqueline Rooney Fine Art I'm a 40 year old mother of 2 beautiful boys-Finn (3) and Evan (1 ) and wife to an ever supportive husband! For as long as I could hold a pencil I was drawing everything I saw around me which lead me to complete my degree in Fine Art and Education (quite) a few years ago! Throughout my busy career as an Art teacher I have been determined to continue my own love of painting holding 5 solo exhibitions of my work to date. Having gone through an eventful and busy few years lately I've decided to take a career break to immerse myself in motherhood and focus on my own Art (between naps and nappies!) My passion for Art and Interiors is evident in so much of my work and I love to advise clients on the best piece of my Art to compliment and complete their home.
MOURNEpoets NOVEL NARNIA He came to visit, from far away To run and climb and dream and play His eyes gazed, dared and danced As he stopped intrigued, enthralled, entranced. In this wonderland he loved to explore Vast green woodlands creep down to the shore Tall trees rise up to brush the sky And creatures dart past in the blink of an eye. Just a young boy but in his mind He imagined strange visions no other could find . He saw medieval beasts and mythical fawns Talking creatures and snow laden lawns Enchanted kingdoms , white witches and worse Beware her immortal, villainous curse! And when the swift winds howled across the Lough shore He heard the mighty Aslan roar! Many years later joining paper and pen He opened the door to those memories again Hence the beginning of his Narnian dream Stories to books, script to screen. Perhaps nature lent a hand In this spellbinding wonderland Of legend , myth and make believe Where in patchwork cloaks giants sleep. Today, his tales have crossed the nations And have captivated generations A lasting legacy by millions adored Because they went with the children Through the wardrobe door!
