“Nary a sour face beneath beard nor bonnet could be witnessed among the crowd; only high spirits and a familiar energy punctuated the collective heartbeat of the garden’s inhabitants. And as the bar poured amber drink into heavy glass, and as the band played golden melody to the contented mass, the man knew he belonged nowhere else but at Weilert’s. It was 1893. It was OTR.” Original narrative by Phil Armstrong Inspired by Henry Farny’s illustration “Weilert’s Saloon”

American Pale Ale APA’s have significant amounts of American hops, typically Cascade. It is particularly the American hops that distinguish an American Pale Ale from British pale ales. The style is close to the American India Pale Ale (IPA) though IPA’s are stronger and more assertively hopped.

Brown Ale Spawned from the Mild Ale, Brown Ales tend to be maltier and sweeter on the palate, with a fuller body. Color can range from reddish brown to dark brown. The Forty-Eighters The city of Cincinnati’s economic growth and increasing job opportunities encouraged thousands of German immigrants, known as “forty-eighters” to reside in Cincinnati. Based in OTR, Cincinnati Germans developed a rich subculture and built up a profitable brewing in d u s t ry t h a t e s ta b lis h e d th e a r e a . The industry boomed and the number of breweries in the city increased from eight in 1840 to thirty six in 1860.
German lager The word lager comes from the German word lagern which means, “to store. A perfect description as lagers are brewed with bottom fermenting yeast that work slowly at around 34 degrees and are often further stored at cool temperature. Lager yeast produce fewer by-product characters than ale yeast which allows for other flavors to pull through, such as hops.

Quenching thirst Into the 1900’s, beer was a safe alternative to disease-ridden water sources. Grains used for brewing would be re-used to create up to three types of beer. Strong beer had high alcohol content, like the beer we drink today, and was enjoyed during social occasions. Table beer was a necessity, as it was consumed instead of water, and was only 2.3% alcohol. The third extraction brewed small beer, which was drank by children and had very low alcohol content.
India Pale Ale In general, a traditional IPA will possess a nose of perfumey alcohol, fruitiness, and malt, although newer versions frequently overshadow the malt with strong hops. English brewers typically use hop varieties of Goldings and Fuggles, while American renditions of IPA employ Northern Brewer, Cascade, and Chinook, which project notes of citric or grapefruit-like flavors.

Frühschoppen The beer gardens of Over-the-Rhine evolved as strong social centers for German Culture. One of many traditions celebrated in the beer gardens was Frühschoppen, a brunch consisting of beer, weisswurst (sausage), and bretzeln (pretzels).
lambic Unlike most beers, which are fermented with carefully cultivated strains of brewer’s yeast, lambic is fermented spontaneously by being exposed to wild yeasts and bacteria native to the Zenne valley in which Brussels lies. This process gives the beer its distinctive flavour: dry, vinous, and cidery, usually with a sour aftertaste.

Pilsner Pilsners, sometimes known as Bohemian Pilsners, are light straw to golden color and crystal clear. Hops are very prevalent usually with a spicy bitterness and or a spicy floral flavor and aroma, notably one of the defining characteristics of the Saaz hop. Smooth and crisp with a clean malty palate, many are grassy. Some of the originals will show some archaic yeast characteristics similar to very mild buttery or fusel (rose like alcohol) flavors and aromas.

characteristics
include
a
dark
color of deep brown with reddish hues, and a creamy head. The full mouth feel is highlighted with notes of chocolate and undertones of roasty flavor. Hop bitterness is noticeable but balanced with the malt. From there the style branches into English, Robust, and American. English Porter’s are malty and
balanced.
They have low hop aroma and subdued bitterness. Robust and American Porters are more roasty than traditional styles and the American rendition has prominent hopping.

Reinheitsgebot In 1877, George Weber’s Jackson Brewery advertised there was “no corn nor grape sugar in the mash, nor rice in the kettle” at his brewery, thus beginning Reinheitsgebot. Reinheitsgebot is a German beer purity law that restricts the ingredients used in beer to barley malt, hops, yeast and water. Reinheitsgebot has never been the law in America, but Cincinnati’s nineteenth century brewers obeyed it as a matter of honor.
Stout Generally dark brown to black in color, stouts are originally an English style of beer that has also become popular among American brewers. Stouts tend to have a strong roasted malt flavor that often tastes of coffee, dark/bittersweet chocolate, or caramel. This flavor is sometimes slightly burnt tasting. This style usually has low sweetness and higher bitterness.

Over the years, most of the city’s brewery buildings were torn down or left to ruin. Approximately forty seven buildings from fourteen breweries still remain in Over-theRhine and the West End today.
There is still hope to restore Cincinnati’s heritage. Current revival efforts and the craft beer renaissance combined with the uprise of local breweries gives hope to restore the culture and traditions that beer once brought to the city. It is time to tap into our roots and leverage craft beer to make Cincinnati great once again. Gateway48 encourages innovation, respects history, and nurtures the present.
