WELCOME As I finish working on this edition, my youngest is lying beside me. He’s been up all night with a 24-hour stomach bug (his brother has just recovered) so I know the misery is short-lived, but I’m still having flashbacks to when he was born and neither of us slept for 10 months. It was one of the hardest things to get through, I was a zombie, and now never take my sleep for granted. Maybe that’s why I jumped at the chance of Andrea Sykes writing the Save Our Sleep article (pages 14-16). It’s the Holy Grail for new parents - thank goodness for businesses like Sleepy Lambs who can come to our rescue. Even when I asked some of the MADE team about what they’d like for Mother’s Day, they all said a lie-in. Whatever you are treated with this year, I wish all you mums a lovely day when it comes.

We asked feature-writer, Andrea Sykes about her ideal Mother’s Day.. I’d like a wee lie-in, tea in bed, lovely snuggles with the little Sykeses before granny promptly arrives to whisk them away for a night while me and the chap take ages to get ready, then go out on an adventure whilst a crack team of cleaners and tidying gurus Marie Kondo my house in my absence. I will then eat lots of amazing food, drink lots of lovely wine (the type that magically doesn’t cause arguments or hangovers) followed by 12 hours of glorious unbroken sleep. Am I allowed a mother’s week? I’ve got more…

NEWS LOCAL MUM ENTERS FINAL COMPETITION STAGE OF RBS AND CROWDFUNDER #BACKHERBUSINESS
Local mum, Amber Pattullo, has made it through to the competition stage of the #backherbusiness RBS and Crowdfunder with her ‘Cook with Me’ campaign. Her business will create a cooking programme for children aged 18 months to school age for the use in early years settings or at home. Amber Pattullo, founder of Cook with Me and Nurture the Play said: “Children love to bake
and get creative but finding recipes which are in line with NHS nutritional guidelines can be tricky. This programme takes away these issues as all recipes are created to fit in with the Setting the Table document and NHS guidelines, meaning they have no added sugar or salt thus promoting a healthy and balanced diet. “Through taking part in the programme, which supports wellbeing, numeracy and literacy, children will also gain practical life skills and a sense of achievement as they advance through the different stages.” This crowdfunding project offers rewards in return for investment. Rewards can be purchased from as little as £8 which can be redeemed for a Cook with Me Class run at Nurture the Play, 5a Portland Gardens, Edinburgh, EH6 6NY. To find out more visit @cookwithmechildren on Instagram
WANT TO TAKE GREAT PHOTOS OF YOUR KIDS? Do you have a DSLR camera gathering dust in the back of a cupboard? Their course is fun and relaxed, with just the right balance between theory and practice and includes a delicious lunch. The next course is on 15 March at Tribe Porty, Portobello, tickets via Eventbrite.

WIN
A FAMILY TICKET TO GANDEY’S CIRCUS
UNDER THE WING
- THE HEALING POWER OF ART Under The Wing is a recently launched community-based art project operating in Edinburgh, founded by Sally-Ann Johns. The aim is to find ways to use art and creativity to help women who have been affected by domestic abuse. Domestic abuse can have a deep and lasting effect on people, something that makes spaces like those provided by Under The Wing vitally important. Their free and subsidised classes give these women a chance to relax, build a sense of community, and unlock the nurturing potential of creativity. Alongside this, Under The Wing offers paying classes and workshops from acclaimed artists based in Edinburgh and throughout Scotland. By attending these workshops your fee will help fund a place for a female domestic abuse survivor and her son/ daughter to attend a workshop for free. Under The Wing is guided by a belief in the power of community for helping survivors of domestic abuse. For those people the experience can be an isolating one, cutting them off from important connections. Through these classes, Under The Wing hopes to bring those people together in a relaxing and empowering environment. Find out more via www.underthewing.org.uk

SOS Save our Sleep
By Andrea Sykes
T
he minute my second child exploded into the world it was clear he was personally offended by the fall in his living standards. He was 9Ib 3oz of furious customer unleashed on TripAdvisor. If he’d had any control over his chubby, raging little hands he would have littered the internet with passive aggressive 0-star reviews. In his last residence he’d wanted for nothing! And now this?! This was a shambles. Daddy? Idiot. This baby grow? Burn it. Milk that I have to get myself? Are you mad? Sleep? How can you expect me to sleep in this wretched, godforsaken place? My little angel’s solution was to wake up and loudly complain every 45 minutes to an hour for the first six months of his life. Then at least 3 times a night until he was 2 and a half. Sometimes for hours on end. Oh, the hours. Was he in pain? Maybe he’s lactose intolerant? Have you tried co-sleeping? Swaddling? Rocking? Ignoring him? Singing? Slinging? This giant donut pillow that mimics the womb and costs the same as your first car? Heartbeat sheep? White noise machine? Blackout blinds? Kitchen fan? Shush patting? Gradual retreat? This dubious anti-histamine stuff I got from Australia
14
which my cousin Britney swears by despite the fact that none of her kids have allergies?! YES. Thank you. Some of this might sound familiar (if it does, we will be great friends). But this is not an article where I talk about what worked, regale you with the weird questions I asked Google at 3am or guiltily confess to having violent feelings towards parents whose babies started sleeping through at 7 weeks. You know how Spotify creates playlists based on your most played tracks? Lovely, right? Wrong! Pop on mine from 2016 and the top track is ’60 minutes of womb sounds’ by that wellknown superstar Baby-Einschlafhilfe. Not cool. Writing this article actually came about after I got the fright of my life going to take a photo of my children only to realise I’d accidentally pressed the selfie-mode button. Who was that bedraggled, shattered-looking woman on my phone? How had it got to this? Most importantly what would be the consequence for me if a full night of uninterrupted sleep retained its status as a ‘special treat’? I decided to do a bit of research (admittedly in 3 minute chunks every night before passing out).
www.mademagazine.co.uk
It’s commonly accepted that sleep deprivation = bad and 8 hours = good. However it was news to me that research shows sleep deprivation actually interferes with your ability to express joy. When sleep deprived you appear sadder, your voice has less of a positive effect on those around you and your face literally finds it harder to form positive expressions. In addition to having a clinically miserable face, regular sleep deprivation inhibits your mental processes, reduces your ability to stay calm, makes you respond more quickly to negative stimuli (wailing toddler) and causes increased reactivity to other emotional expressions (wailing toddler again). When I eventually managed to persuade my youngest that having his own room was AWESOME, he in turn put in great effort to persuade me that sleeping on the carpet next to his cot holding his hand was perfectly AWESOME too. It wasn’t. If I wasn’t in my bed with ear plugs in I was broken. It was hearing a podcast interview with neuroscientist Matthew Walker by chance that provided an explanation. Apparently, half of your brain won’t sleep as deeply as the other when sleeping in a foreign environment, like a hotel room, or in my case, my toddler’s bedroom floor. I do more reading. In his 2017 bestseller Why We Sleep, Walker shares yet more gems. I remember once announcing that I felt like I was dying of sleep deprivation. It turns out that’s not far from the truth. Walker believes that lack of sleep is the
greatest public health challenge we are facing in the 21st century, indeed that we need to confront this ‘catastrophic sleep loss epidemic’. He argues that sleep deprivation is a primary cause of obesity, because the hormone that usually tells you when you are full is blunted by lack of sleep. Not only that, the hormone that tells us when we’re hungry is actually amplified by lack of sleep. That’ll explain my inability to not inhale anything left on my children’s plates. As well as making me chubby and giving me sad face, lack of sleep also apparently makes me more likely to develop Alzheimer’s, diabetes, suffer a stroke, develop cancer, depression or anxiety. Basically regularly clocking under 7/8 hours a night is as bad for you as regularly drinking and smoking to excess and will almost definitely shorten your life. And for you dads out there, if you regularly sleep 5-6 hours a night you’re likely to have the testosterone levels of a man 6-10 years your senior. It makes for sobering reading, particularly when in some circles lack of sleep and what you miraculously manage to achieve despite it has become commensurate with how tough you are. People’s attempts to get the right amount of sleep and turning in for an early one or just not a 3am one are stigmatised as boring, straight or lazy. With two-thirds of adults in developed nations failing to obtain the nightly eight hours of sleep recommended by the World Health Organisation, Walker sums up our choice succinctly:
SCIENTISTS HAVE DISCOVERED A REVOLUTIONARY NEW TREATMENT THAT MAKES YOU LIVE LONGER. made MAR / APR 2020
15
TIPS
• Kill your screen time - one hour of iPhone use before bed will delay the onset of melatonin production (the hormone that tells your body when to sleep) by about three hours and your peak melatonin levels will also be about 50% less. • Have a hot bath before bed – the drop in body temperature after getting out the bath can help you feel sleepy. • Get some sun! Daylight exposure of at least 30-60 minutes a day is key to regulating sleep patterns. “Scientists have discovered a revolutionary new treatment that makes you live longer. It enhances your memory, makes you more attractive. It keeps you slim and lowers food cravings. It protects you from cancer and dementia. It wards off colds and flu. It lowers your risk of heart attacks and stroke, not to mention diabetes. You’ll even feel happier, less depressed, and less anxious. Are you interested?” YES. So what did I do and what can you do? Firstly, my problem was not getting to sleep, it was staying asleep thanks to the youngest sprog. So we spent what was probably the best £200 EVER spent on a straight talking sleep consultant called Mary who breezed in, laid down a gentle plan we were happy with. We stuck to it religiously (turns out lack of sleep can make you very inconsistent, go figure!) which in turn sorted the little sleep thieving tyrant right out. If you and your weans are mismatched in the sleep department I wholeheartedly recommend seeking expert help. Sometimes a fresh pair of eyes on the situation and some support is just the ticket. If, however, your kids sleep but you don’t, Walker’s book offers up some further tips worth putting into practice. n
16
• Chilly bedroom - Your brain needs to drop its temperature by 2-3 degrees Fahrenheit to sleep so keep your room as cold as you can tolerate. • Stick to a sleep schedule – regular bedtimes and wake up times (even at the weekends!) • Avoid nicotine and caffeine – both stimulants that can cause lighter sleep and early morning waking • Avoid alcohol before bed – alcohol not only robs you of REM sleep thus keeping you in lighter stages of sleep but it can also impair your breathing and cause more night waking • Avoid staying awake in bed – Walker suggests getting up after 20 minutes of trying to get to sleep if you’re still not sleepy • Avoid exercise in the 2-3 hours before bedtime. Exercise is great for promoting sleep in general but doing it too close to bedtime can interfere with your ability to fall asleep.

Kitchen Colonial By Claire Daly
L
ast month my father-in-law moved into our house and there are now three generations of us under one roof, just the perfect Indian family I had always imagined. Except that it’s not. I was genuinely looking forward to having him move in. He’s very bubbly and makes fantastic curries. In fact, I’d decided I’d much rather have him move in than my own dad. And Rose is delighted to have her Grandpa around more. I realised before he moved in that he wouldn’t like our spice cupboard and that he would want a spice rack. So I went out and bought one especially. I thought I was prepared! But nothing could prepare me for the colonial kitchen takeover that began almost as soon as he’d moved in. This cool Californian moved in and all but laughed at our small Scottish kitchen and declared it not fit for purpose. Our house became a battleground of problems needing his urgent attention. He took one look at our clothes horse and declared, ‘Well that’s interesting, but not a permanent solution.’ Even our cheese was criticised. ‘Somerset Brie? That’s a bit like trying to say you’ve made Edinburgh Champagne’. Within days of moving in, he set about rearranging my entire kitchen. (And yes, I define it as mine.) First, he declared all my beloved cookery books would have to be moved upstairs so he could install a microwave in our kitchen. Then he decreed that the colour of the new toaster didn’t matter and now we have a complete mismatching array of copper, lilac, black and cream gadgets in our kitchen. My kitchen. Next on his hit-list were the utensils. My knives
were not sharp enough, so he bought more. He couldn’t work out how to use our salt and pepper grinders and after a grand pile of salt fell into his dinner he replaced them with new ones (ugly brown ones). I politely explained the old ones had worked perfectly well before he arrived. Now, I love a colourful tea towel à la Anthropologie. I have quite a few. But because Grandpa had not located the pile, he bought more. Ugly green and white striped ones, the likes of which you might find in a prison kitchen. Then he replaced my egg whisk. We already have one of those, I said. Next thing he was laying eggy claim to my paper pile in the kitchen. First he put an eggy spoon down next to my diary. Then he laid an egg in my pile of post. He literally left an egg rolling around on a counter! This is no place for eggs, I said. You will have to tidy your papers and put them somewhere else, he said. No, you will have to learn not to colonise my kitchen, I didn’t say. Then a cousin blithely mentioned what an absolute delight he had been in her kitchen when he came to stay. Such a delightful house guest, isn’t he, she gushed. Uh huh, I replied, too shell-shocked to know what to say. Aren’t grandparents just wonderful to have around? n

How to choose your family photography
Location
© Images by Rachel Hein
Weʼre blessed with some stunning locations around Edinburgh, so how do you choose where to have your family photography session? There are many factors that can influence your choice. Family photographer Rachel Hein has put together some tips to help make your decision a bit easier… 1. Favourite places Where do you hang out as a family? Do you gravitate towards the beach, walk the dog in the woods or are you more of an urban family? Your photos should reflect who you are as a family. Or choose a location that has sentimental value - how about returning to the venue you got married at? 2. Accessibility If you have young children who canʼt walk very far you might want to bring a buggy along, so a muddy woodland trail is probably not going to work. If it’s a multi-generational shoot, consider older relatives too. 3. The dirt factor Do you want your kids to (try!) and stay clean and tidy during the shoot? Are you comfortable with them getting dirty in the mud or covered in sand at the beach?
32
4. Familiarity If you have young children it has to be fun, so going to a familiar place will help them to relax and be themselves. Somewhere they can run and let off steam is ideal. 5. Season Would you love to have a spring shoot in a woodland filled with bluebells, or do you prefer the gorgeous colour that autumn brings?
www.mademagazine.co.uk
East Lothian beaches Yellowcraig and Gullane are great for younger children, thanks to their easily accessible beaches. The beautiful woodland at Yellowcraig offers shelter from the sun and the wind, the dunes and the marram grass are perfect for portraits, and even the play park is photogenic! Tyninghame beach and woods are equally gorgeous, with a wilder feel and a longer walk to the beach itʼs more suited to families with slightly older kids.
Rachel has been photographing families in and around Edinburgh for ten years and in that time has built up a wealth of knowledge about the local area. Here are a few of her favourite locations… Blackford Hill & Hermitage Braid The woodland around here offers a wonderfully diverse range of backdrops all year round. There’s plenty for all ages to explore and itʼs a relatively easy walk from the car park to top of the hill where the views over the city and Holyrood park are hard to beat. Lauriston Castle This ticks all the boxes; itʼs accessible, beautiful and has a great variety of backdrops from woodland to manicured gardens. It is also home to Edinburghʼs only Japanese garden. Throw in a stunning Edwardian house and a fabulous sea view and itʼs a clear winner. Itʼs a great spot in spring when the daffodils and bluebells are out in force and again in autumn when the colours are gorgeous. made MAR / APR 2020
Cammo Estate Cammo has a wonderful, untamed feel to it. Itʼs such a fun place to explore with ruined buildings and a tumbledown walled garden to fuel the imagination. Itʼs very accessible but at the same time you feel that you could quite easily get lost in the woods. It has some of the oldest and most unusual trees in Edinburgh, a beautiful range of flowers in the spring and a lovely open meadow. Beecraigs Country Park Beecraigs has it all. The forest is magical, thereʼs a beautiful loch and even a deer park. Itʼs a lovely place for a wander with all ages, year round. Post shoot thereʼs the added bonus of coffee and cake for the grown ups at the cafe and the play park is one of the best in the Lothians. n

Why collaborative family law can be the “Marriage Story” tonic Hollywood has a tendency to turn divorce lawyers into compelling villains. Gibson Kerr’s Head of Family Law, Fiona Rasmusen, looks into depictions of divorce – and reveals an alternative process that could stem misery for Scottish families.
A
NYBODY who has watched the recent movie, Marriage Story could be forgiven for being put off ever engaging in divorce proceedings, whatever their situation. Without giving too much away, as is so often the case, the lawyer acts as the catalyst in a race to the bottom, twisting a healthy post-split relationship into a nasty custody battle. While there’s much to admire about the film, including stellar performances from Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver, Scottish viewers may be left questioning whether it is truly representative of the divorce process. Thankfully, from first-hand perspective after 25 years in family law, I’d say broadly no. To great effect the lawyers in Marriage Story play caricatures. From the dozy old pro counting down his days to exit, to Ray Liotta’s pinstripeclad city-slicker. However it’s Laura Dern’s portrayal that offends practitioners this side of the Atlantic most, with a needless pre-emptive escalation into conflict that is (thankfully) unreflective of the sector today. The nature of divorce is the very reason it makes such captivating storylines. It is intensely personal, potentially distressing and highly emotive. Of course there are difficult moments – and times when a lawyer must take a stand and fight for a client. The key way in which this movie differs from reality is that, as family lawyers, our primary position is one of empathy. Above all else, we’re working with our clients towards an amicable civilised settlement, not making the situation more unpleasant. Collaborative process – a silver bullet? There has been quite a slow uptake of this process in Scotland, likely due to a lack of awareness, however, engaging in the collaborative process
34
is an attractive option for anybody worried about an escalation into conflict. It does two things. Firstly, rather than instruct a lawyer to act solely in the interests of their client, it allows them to sit around a table with the aim of reaching a fair solution. Secondly - it takes the threat of court off the table entirely (provided an outcome is reached). These two points change the dynamic dramatically, with solicitors as facilitators, and all financial information obtained during the process. It’s worth bearing in mind that not all family lawyers are qualified to deliver collaborative family law – but many are – and it can result in a more harmonious process. Unfortunately the collaborative process doesn’t offer a panacea for all separating couples. If it doesn’t work, the couple will be back to square one – with little to show for the time and effort. While it is painful, going to court does provide a final decision. It can also be surprising just how straining even the collaborative process can be. Regardless, separating couples in Scotland should take heart that there are options out there. Divorce can sometimes mirror the Marriage Story plot – and while we can’t guarantee a fairytale ending, we can ensure Hollywood’s depiction of divorce lawyers remains entirely fictional. n

PLANT-BASED RECIPE s r e g n a h C e m a G
By Charlotte Thompson, Owner of The Pantry
So, along with Thom, Head Chef at The Pantry Stockbridge, we have come up with some ideas to get kiddies eating plant based a couple nights a week. The easiest way being simple swaps. Ted, my middle child, loves fajitas and quesadillas, so we came up with jackfruit tortillas which substitutes the pulled pork or chicken for the really versatile fruit. I genuinely couldn’t taste the difference. Add some smoked paprika mayo and it’s parent friendly too!
The Netflix documentary The Game Changers has become a hot topic within a lot of mum circles recently, with lots of mamas trying to eat plant-based at least a few times a week, if not adopting a full vegetarian or vegan diet. But with many parents (myself included!) trying hard to adopt the policy of feeding their kids the same (or at least a version) of the things they feed themselves, this can pose a bit of a conundrum: how do you get your fish fingers and chips loving little ones to try some plant based foods?

Mindfuly Mumm made MAR / APR 2020
to North Berwick in order to embrace a more balanced, family friendly lifestyle. No travel, no demanding bosses, just more fresh air and fun. What she didn’t expect, was to start experiencing panic attack and suffering from anxiety. Her youngest daughter Brooke had been diagnosed with having febrile convulsions. Anybody who has witnessed a febrile convulsion will appreciate how stressful this is.

eing Mindful is all about being in the moment, feeling calm and in control and aware of ones thoughts. This is certainly not how Jarrien Philip from North Berwick felt as her youngest daughter was rushed to hospital having one of her many febrile convulsions. Jarrien is a busy mum of two girls aged 4 and 1. After having her second child, she decided to quit the sales and marketing job in Edinburgh and move out
51
DISCOVERING MINDFULNESS HAS HELPED JARRIEN TO GATHER RESOURCES AND TECHNIQUES THAT SHE CAN USE TO KEEP HER ANXIETY UNDER CONTROL A child can become stiff and their arms and legs may begin to twitch. They can also lose consciousness, vomit and foam at the mouth. The cause of these seizures is usually unknown but can often be caused by a fever. A truly horrible thing to witness, especially in your own child at such a young age. Jarrien found these convulsions understandably stressful but to make things worse she found that she was not coping with day to day life the same anymore and was experiencing regular panic attacks and bouts of anxiety. No doubt that dealing with these high pressure situations with her daughter had triggered this anxiety. She faced sudden overwhelming feelings of alarm, racing heart, dizziness and uncontrollable worry would set in. She realised she needed help and after seeing her GP she started to get counselling. However, she also wanted to explore other ways of coping and ways to feel in control, knowing she was moving forward. Jarrien discovered a company called ‘The Mindful Enterprise’ which helps people of all ages strengthen their mental resilience. After going on a training course with them she felt something suddenly click, and knew that the techniques they were explaining to her were going to change her life. She’s learned to be a calmer better person and has far more self compassion and patience. Discovering mindfulness has helped Jarrien to gather resources and techniques that she can use to keep her anxiety under control. Adding anything into an already busy and stressful day with young children can be hard but Jarrien feels that by sticking to these quick techniques and activities, mindfulness can soon become normal and part of your daily routine.

Be More Mindful Journalling. We’ve all heard that writing down three things you’re grateful every night and every morning is good for the soul, and it is. But taking a few more minutes each morning to set an intention for your day, perhaps briefly scribbling thoughts about what is ahead and how you want to feel, can put your mind in an open and grateful space as you face your day ahead. Meditation.. This is another thing we know we should do, but is tricky with kids and work and friendships and households and extended families and everything else to manage. Which is why it’s so important! Even taking a minute to close your eyes and concentrate on your breath can help clear a cluttered mind. Yoga. The benefits of yoga are countless and even taking five minutes to stretch and breathe can help reset your body and your mind. Get outside! Grab your wellies and a waterproof, wrap up warm, and get walking. Fresh air does wonders for the soul. Try and find some green space and spend some time looking — actually looking — at what is around you. Nature is the mind’s greatest healer. Talk. Open up about how you are feeling. Chances are, many people you know have struggled with anxiety and coping with all of the pressures of modern life. Reach out and you’ll find countless people ready to offer useful advice and a hug. “Me” time. This could be a long soak in the tub with a novel or a three-hour box set binge. Find something you want to do that feels frivolous and do it. It’s not wasted time when you are indulging in something that will put you in a better place after you’ve finished. Relish this time; it is nonnegotiable. n

past have even seen lambs being born! All the sheep are brought into the lambing shed, so they can be checked day and night, in case they need help when lambing; and to make sure they are getting plenty of nutrition for energy to look after their lambs and produce milk to feed them. When they are born, the sheep and lambs are placed in a small pen so they can bond, and the lambs can learn to suckle. Calving starts in April too, with cows having calves into the summer months. Similar to sheep, the cows are looked after to make sure they have a fresh straw bed, water, and lots of healthy nutritional food; Helping the cows to calve where need be and supporting the calf to feed from its mum, before they go out to the fresh spring grass. However cows are a bit bigger and can be very protective of thier young so we do need to be extra careful when working with them. Farm Tours happen most mornings during school holidays about 9.30am and are free for guests staying at Hilly Cow Wigwams, so that’s another reason to book your stay this spring… n

POST BABY BODY the myths
MYTH: Your body will bounce back after giving birth. TRUTH: It always takes work, there is no “bouncing back”. The body needs a bit of help getting back to its “new normal”. MYTH: Post-Natal exercise is boring. TRUTH: Yes, it kind of is but only for the first 4-6 weeks. After that you can have all the fun in the world as long as you know what you’re doing and you listen to your body. Kettlebell routines, hula hooping, all the squats, lunges and lifts in the world can be done as long as you make sure you build things up steadily and don’t overdo it. MYTH: You’ll lose the “baby weight” when you start breastfeeding. TRUTH: Breastfeeding burns calories but you need to eat to compensate. Combine this with an interrupted sleep pattern, higher stress levels and hormonal changes, weight-loss is not a given at all. The hormones required for breastfeeding mean you’re likely to retain between 5-10 lbs of weight as your body wants to make sure it can support.
60
www.mademagazine.co.uk
MYTH: Pain is the “new normal”. TRUTH: Back-, neck- and hip-pain. Poor posture and a numb, round, belly don’t have to be part of your future. With the right exercise and guidance there is no reason why your body can’t be pain-free and look and feel amazing. MYTH: Peeing yourself happens post-natal. TRUTH: Although your pelvic floor will be weaker immediately after giving birth this too can be strengthened up. Don’t reach for the Tena Ladies just yet. Do your exercises and you’ll be fine. MYTH: You can’t exercise straight after having had a baby. TRUTH: You can start gentle pelvic floor exercises, such as Kegels, as soon as you feel comfortable and it’s highly recommended you do this. Even simple things such as doing the core breath will make a big difference to your pelvic floor and core. About 6 weeks after giving birth you’ll be ready to start a post-natal program such as healthypostnatalbody. MYTH: You need to exercise for hours every week to see any results. TRUTH: If you can do just 10 minutes a day of targeted exercise you can achieve some amazing results. You get results by being consistent and doing something regularly. n

THE CNM COURSE IS A VERY WORTHWHILE EXPERIENCE By Ciara Roberts CNM Naturopathic Nutrition Graduate and Author
I
found my CNM studies comprehensive, enjoyable and affirming and loved my three years of training in Naturopathic Nutrition. CNM is a combination of hopeful endeavour and academic excellence which makes it a very worthwhile experience. My first book ‘Wholly Aligned, Wholly Alive’, launched in June 2019, details my journey and includes the tools of nutrition and yoga and how they have helped me. I went into renal failure at 14. I had hospital dialysis treatments until age 21 when I had a kidney transplant. I lost transplant kidney function 3 years ago and whilst waiting for another transplant, I currently support my health with both conventional and natural medicine treatments.

Having been raised by a mother very interested in natural health, I considered a Master’s in Nutrition. It was through that process I ‘happened’ upon the CNM course and it immediately sang out to me. It literally felt like the course had been designed just for me. I was still working full-time in private banking credit risk in Canary Wharf when I started at CNM, however, I knew in my heart there was so much more I had to offer in this lifetime. I resigned from banking in 2013, having been supported by an amazing Global Head to go part-time for a year prior – highly unusual in my type of role. When you believe you are supported, this becomes the reality. I loved the lecturers, whose calibre was

excellent, and meeting like-minded people, some of whom became very good friends. The course content and feeling fully equipped to practise after graduation, were helpful antidotes to my very busy, stressful banking career. I came to really enjoy studying at the weekends. Having also qualified as a yoga teacher, I set up my own business, Wholly Aligned, in 2012. Wholly Aligned draws upon the wisdom of nutrition and yoga to help people reconnect with mind, body and soul and ultimately awaken their inner physician. The CNM course enriched my knowledge and, importantly, helped me understand more deeply the intricate nature of therapeutic rapport and how key it is to build trust and confidence with your clients. n

MADE meets...Maddie & Marks M
um to crazy 3-year old Ava, Jen Wilson has lived in Scotland for almost 20 years now. Based in Colinton, when she’s not with her family and socialising with friends, she’s busy working on her new business, Maddie & Marks Shoes. We talked to Jen to find out more… What inspired you to buy Maddie & Marks? I’ve always worked in retail and I loved it, and always had aspirations to own my own business. Two years after working for Maddie & Marks, the chance came up to buy the Bruntsfield business and I knew I had to go for it! Working at M&M had been amazing, I genuinely love every day, and can’t believe I now own such a wonderful shop. I have an incredible team around me and our customers are fantastic. For me, this is the dream and I’m so excited for our future plans. What advice would you give parents in terms of shoes for their babies/kids? This is something we get asked a lot. We are passionate about getting the right fit and measurements for babies, right up to teens. Kids feet are vulnerable and need the best care to help prevent problems later on. Babies don’t need shoes until they are walking, and even then there is no rush - barefoot or sock is best. Once they are toddling we would recommend a super soft cruiser to protect the foot. Once they are confidently walking, then we can get going onto the exciting world of shoes! I would also say don’t worry if the first shoe experience doesn’t quite go to plan! Babies often don’t like getting their feet measured, we are well used to it and have lots of distraction techniques to help. What do you do in your spare time? Spare time is often taken up with activities with Ava, whether it be ballet, soft play or playing on her scooter, we are always running about! When we do get a spare minute we catch up with family and snuggle down on the sofa to watch whatever dance programme is on - we love them all.

What do you always have in your handbag? In the good old days it would’ve been lippy, a purse, perfume etc. But now it’s more likely to be crayons and a snack of some description. Oh, and my diary otherwise I’d forget where I’m meant to be! What are your plans for the future? Family wise we plan to stay in Colinton - Ava starts school next year and we are keen to stay in this area. (I’d like to squeeze in some more holidays before we are restricted by term times!) Work wise I have so many plans, I’m really keen to get our transactional website up and running and to refit the shop. Short term we are up for an Edinburgh Business Award in April, for Best Independent Retailer in Edinburgh - this in itself was a huge compliment so we shall see what that holds! n
