I am a real Jekyll and Hyde when it comes to money. I look after the pennies, and then splurge the pounds when I can. I’ll be good for ages; I’ll save, look for bargains, restrict myself from too many treats and then, BOOM, I go shopping!! I enjoy the mix, it’s like a hobby, I enjoy saving but I also enjoy nice things. I love using money-off vouchers in the supermarket, after all, it justifies the expensive bottle of gin in my trolley. I get a kick out of tripling Tesco vouchers for family dinners out. I refuse to pay 5p for a plastic bag so stuff my designer tote full of groceries! I’m trying to teach my boys the value of money too, not to be wasteful, to save up for special things. It’s a hard lesson to learn but totally worth it when this time year comes around. Whether you are saving or splurging this Christmas, I hope it’s a special one for you all.

Living between the
Lines By Ian Noble
H
aving worked in schools all over the world I’ve noticed a pretty disturbing trend. Kids are terrible at colouring in! They’re all over the place. Sections not filled in properly, colours don’t seem to matter - green elephants, pink and blue zebras and what is Rudolph the purple nose reindeer all about? Colours are scratched on top of each other and pretty much every single line on the page has crossed into the zone of no return, which everyone knows was never designed to have colour in it. And then when they’re finished you see their little smug faces, looking up at you, page held out high into the air, their big excited eyes fixated on your impending reaction and a look across their face that says, ‘look at this masterpiece I just created… for you’. They could not be more delighted with the unrestrained mash-up of colours on the page. And the thing is… IT’S WONDERFUL There are a couple of things that are right with this situation. One of which, is the ‘IKEA Effect’. You know exactly what that is. It’s that feeling of unadulterated satisfaction and undeniable love for something, because you made it (even though it might have a fault or six). You created it, you constructed it, you brought to life. You didn’t just
14
buy something of value, you gave something value. Through time, effort and probably a few curse words, you generated value in something which in turn, added a little value to your life. And that felt good. It’s the same reason instant cake mix struggled to sell in the 1950s - it took the effort out of baking. A home baked cake wasn’t valued in the same way if it was out of a mix. The fix? Manufacturers took the egg part out of the mix and left that up to the ‘baker’. Adding that one extra step of breaking an egg increased the value of the effort, the process, and the cake. Over 20 years ago Maxine Clark in Missouri cottoned on to this phenomenon and started a company where people could choose what went into their very own teddy bear. Literally. You get to stuff it, put a heart in it and even give it its own smell, and all yours for a small fortune. And not only do people pay it, they rave about it and they love it, all because they got to be part of creating something special and personal. When we create something ourselves we have a bond with it, a connection. We value that something higher on a personal and monetary level. There are studies that confirm it. Professors from the University of California, Duke University and the Harvard business school
www.mademagazine.co.uk
released findings in 2011 highlighting the impact of the IKEA effect. Not only were participants in the study willing to pay more for a product that they made when compared with a pre-made product, but they viewed their amateur creations as having the same value as professionally made products. Some people might think that’s daft, that it’s a kind of delusion that blinds people to the reality of what they have actually created, but we have to ask whose reality is it that actually matters. Did it matter to the rest of my first year woodwork class that my bird-box was a little wonky and that there were a couple of edges that didn’t match up perfectly? The best response to that question is, ‘Who cares!’ That bird box was going to my home, in my garden, and would only be visible to me, my family and the birds that would call it home year after year. To them, it was perfect, and that’s what’s important. Does it matter that kids colour in like maniacs, as if the lines are there, merely as a rough guide to be ignored. Yes, of course, unless you’re a
psychopath. But it also matters that it’s part of the journey to becoming better and… it matters that we celebrate it. Imagine being so bad at something that it becomes awesome. Imagine not knowing or even caring how bad you are at something that you completely redefine the parameters of what is good, and not only that, you make rubbish the new great and are proud of it! Mums and dads and grannies and grandads all over the world get on-board with rubbish colouring in as well, gasping and awing at its brilliance and hanging it proudly on the fridge for everyone to see and enjoy like it was the Mona Lisa. You only have to colour between the lines if you accept that colouring between the lines is the best and most fun way to do it. Who is society to tell us where the lines even are. Whatever it is any of us do, we get to decide what is great to us and the ones we love, we define what to be proud of. So cross that line, colour wherever and however you want and most importantly, be proud of it. n

I
just turned 40 and celebrated with a new piercing. Mini mid life crisis? Maybe. I used to mark life events with a piercing. Leave home; upper lobes, end of a relationship; helix, another break up; nose. I quickly realised I made too many poor life choices to keep that up. I was going to end up resembling a sieve so swapped to haircuts. So perhaps I should have expected to find myself sitting in the piercer’s chair at such a big milestone. But I wasn’t expecting it to make me feel like me again. A friend once referred to parenting children
aged 0-5 as the lost years. When your children are at their most dependent your needs aren’t a priority and it’s easy to lose a sense of who you are beyond a parent. Before I became a mother I loved to try activities - everything from stilt walking to bungee jumping. Now I get to enjoy all the new experiences having children brings and I love trying things with them. But I also miss making choices purely for me. Especially the adventurous ones. Sitting in that chair (nervously sweating) transported me back to that feeling of being about to embark on the unknown, just for kicks. Just for me. And it felt really good. Fast forward 10 minutes and I was in possession of a pierced rook and a renewed commitment to seeking out experiences. Lots with the children and a few just for me. I wonder what I’ll get pierced at 50 . . n

or all the dads out there (and the mums who want dad out of the house one night a week) - here’s how I found my favourite past time. It’s something healthy but not too physical; something you don’t do on your own but among others; something you can already do (but might want to check to be sure)….singing. As a schoolboy I sang in my school choir and loved it. I doubted I was still a tenor, but maybe I had graduated over time into a lead, a baritone or even a bass? These musings made me pick up my iPad one night and trawl through Edinburgh Choirs and Choruses – amazingly there are over 120 of them! I started wondering when and where did they rehearse? Who conducted or directed them? What would be the rehearsal format and timing? What music genres did they sing and what type of events or places did they perform in? Would I know anyone already in such a group? My head was buzzing! There was nothing for it but to trust my instinct and go for the group that appealed most, and who invited interested people like me to visit a rehearsal.
18
On the evening of rehearsal visit my heart was thumping as I arrived, I momentarily held back to see just what guys were arriving before following them into the hall. Someone suggested I take a seat, which I gladly did. The chorus was warming up with physical exercises - that looked easy - and then they moved on to vocal exercising. At this point the chorus director turned and welcomed me, as did the applause of the chorus, and they invited me to join them and take part in the vocal warm-up. It’s not easy to say ‘no thanks’ when you’re the focus of all eyes! So I stood with the chorus as we gargled, bubbled and sirened up high, and burrowed down low following examples and corrections. This vocal exercising extended to comic verse and musical scaling, cleverly weaving a rising half chorus and a descending half chorus which provided my first experience of harmony after which, slightly flushed and bemused, I was happy to resume my seat. Then the chorus started singing together in four part harmony. I felt emotional at the beauty of the harmonic combination; emotions that plucked at
www.mademagazine.co.uk
happy and sad memories. I was instantly and wholly drawn to the commitment, passion, joy and sensuality of the sound that those chorus members performed, all credit to the personable chorus director. The evening of songs passed by in a flash. An interval break provided the chance for me to talk with the members from all walks of life and backgrounds bound together by their real ability to create and achieve harmony challenges and to perform them, not just for themselves, but for me! I came home elated, refreshed and converted that night and haven’t stopped enjoying rehearsals, concerts, performances, fringe shows and conventions since. If any dads out there fancy some stressbusting, me-time then try singing in a chorus, it works. n made NOV / DEC 2019

The One About the Poo in the Cupboard By Claire Daly
M
y friend Isla is a very clean person. Her house, not so. Every time I arrive at her house, I itch to have a good go at her kitchen with the anti-bac and scrub her counters before she prepares food for my family. And within a few hours of arriving there to stay, I usually manage it. I wouldn’t do it in anyone else’s house, and I enjoy cleaning much less in my own home. As regular readers will know, I am by no means a clean-freak. But since Isla is younger than me and I have always been the mummy hen in our friendship, and since we have known each other since university, she accepts it as just something I do every time I come to stay. Admittedly, the first time I did it, she had mice in her kitchen and I had a small baby. And no, she did not warn me there were mice in her house before we arrived! But she is a very good friend and after my immediate reaction I was forced to forgive her. Her littlest is obsessed with poo and is potty training. He enjoys nothing more than chitchatting away about poo at the dinner table. “Daddy is a poo!” he chuckles to himself, full of glee, as the adults exchange awkward glances. Now, you see, there is a plum tree in the garden, laden with ripe fruit (since it is still late summer at the time of writing) and the boys have, as Isla says, overfilled themselves with plums so that some must spill out one end or t’other. Her words, not mine, you understand. Later we are playing a game of hide and seek and one of the boys hides in a large empty kitchen cupboard with my daughter. Another plum-scoffing boy and I come upon them in the kitchen and surprise them. made NOV / DEC 2019
“Eeeww, there’s a poo in there!” says one of the children as they emerge from the corner cupboard. I look into the cupboard and there sitting maliciously at the back is a very small squashed but round, brown-looking... thing. I shudder in horror at the thought and check my daughter’s clothes and discover a small brown smear on her cardigan. It could easily be melted chocolate but just as easily something brown and very, very nasty. I whip it off and bag it for extermination later and hurry her off to the bathroom making excuses for why we need to wash our hands immediately. “Don’t worry, it’s not a poo,” Isla squeals after us, “it’s a squashed blueberry!” But I don’t believe her. I worry that Social Services will come because a small boy thought it was funny to do a tiny poo in a kitchen cupboard. I worry about what problems he may grow up to have. And I worry about the cleanliness of this house we are staying in while putting my daughter to bed. Then, hours later, after she’s asleep, I open the dreaded kitchen cupboard for a closer look. The poos in question have not even been cleaned up. Then I peer closer, holding my nose just in case. They are in fact blueberries, one of them squashed and perversely poo-shaped. I laugh out loud in relief and wonder why I disbelieved my friend. Whoops! n

The Brunton have teamed up again with experienced Scottish theatre maker, John Binnie, to produce a fabulous new family friendly version of the traditional pantomime Cinderella. The Brunton specialises in producing fun and interactive traditional family pantomime, suitable for all ages. The tale of Cinderella is told in classic pantomime style, with comedy, special effects, songs and joining in. Please note there will be some flashing lights, loud bangs and scary characters, but also a happy ending!

C HILDREN’S CL ASSIC CONCERTS: SANTA’S WORKSHOP www.usherhall.co.uk USHER HALL Sunday 8 December 3pm CCC presenter, Owen, has landed himself a dream job at Santa’s workshop. He’s having a (snow)ball in Winter Wonderland getting ready for the big day, but things are starting to go wrong… Santa’s got stuck up the chimney (in the latest health and safety check), ballerinas and wooden toys are coming to life on the production line and there’s a mountain of present-wrapping to get through! Featuring hits from festive films, family singalongs
and plenty of holiday spirit - can the hard-working elves of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, talented dancers of the Manor School of Ballet and the lovely audience use the gift of music to get Christmas back on track, in a race against time?

Edinburgh folklore tells us that when Charles Dickens was visiting the city on a reading tour, a stroll through a kirkyard brought him to the tombstone of one Ebenezer Scroggie, inspiration struck and A Christmas Carol was born. Writer and director, Tony Cownie brings this famous festive story back to the city of its birth with a guest appearance from Edinburgh’s bestloved Victorian – Greyfriars Bobby.
Kick 2020 off in style and head to Toy Town for the brand new singalong spectacular from Anya, Kevin, Gary and Bonzo the Dog. The mischievous Gnorbert the Gnome is creating mayhem and pinching everyone’s favourite things. Mayor Bear has asked the gang to look after his most precious toy, so it is up to them to make sure Gnorbert doesn’t get his hands on it. There are also keys to discover, games to play and songs to sing, so they’ll definitely need your help too.
CINDERELL A www.howdenparkcentre.co.uk HOWDEN PARK CENTRE Monday 9 December - Saturday 28 December Can you keep a secret? I’ve heard a terrible story. Poor, wee Cinderella’s evil step-mum, the vicious, evil and jealous Ruth Bumstep and her even uglier twin sisters, Tina and Tweena, actually made Cinder’s Ballroom Champion parents actually disappear... but that’s ‘strictly’ between you and me. It’s almost as if evil aunty Ruth got rid of poor wee Cinders’ folks on purpose just so she could have the The International Pan-Lothian (and Shotts) Prize in advance. Will Cinders discover the truth? Will you come and help her out?

How many sleeps? S
leigh bells ring. Snow is glistening. Dreaming by the fire. Snowmen in the meadows. Walking in the winter wonderland. Yes, that’s right, it’s Christmas season. Again. Another year has passed. Which means another year having collected a novel worth of gift requests from our children. Throughout the year, when they express an interest in a new toy or game, we will often revert to ‘well, maybe you can add it to your Christmas list’, secretly hoping that during the months that follow, 99% of this list will be lost in the mists of time, mainly because we never capture the idea on any actual list. However, our children have remarkable similarities to elephants. Not just with regards the noise levels as they stomp up or down the stairs. Their memories are amazing. Like elephants, they never forget. Ever. They remember everything they wanted to put on their Christmas list that they mentally started on the 1st of January of that very year. It normally involves a lot of plastic. Indeed the kids toy industry has much to blame for our environmental challenges, given its fixation with the production of a vast array of totally pointless toys, manufactured fully made NOV / DEC 2019
in plastic. So writing Santa’s list will become a skilled political negotiation, attempting to reduce this long list down to a select few. Those select few having to pass through what I feel is an important filter – does the potential present have any form of adult appeal? Would you have fun playing it as an adult? Or can it lead to a longer term future pastime. Like a golf club. Unfortunately, golf clubs don’t massively appeal to 5 year olds, unless they have already displayed talent like Tiger Woods. Christmas also means the Christmas countdown has finally counted down. The countdown actually started in August. In the middle of our summer holidays, we were asked, ‘how many sleeps until Christmas’. The technical answer was ‘a lot’. Frankly in the middle of August it is beyond me to calculate the number of sleeps until Christmas. I mean, it really is a lot. You’re not even remotely close. Can we not simply enjoy the balmy long summer evenings (I’m clearly assuming we’re holidaying abroad, as opposed to an Edinburgh staycation) and enjoy the moment, rather than constantly thinking ahead to the cold, wet and short winter days of Christmas?

By Michael Atkinson
Well at least Christmas brings eggnog. And mulled wine. And hot Pimm’s. It brings a fortnight of novelty alcohol consumption that enables you to remember each year just why eggnog, mulled wine and other such hot alcoholic drinks are only imbibed during Christmas festivities. It’s simply because nobody in their right mind, unless driven to distraction by the latest ‘how many sleeps until Christmas’, would ever consider drinking these unpleasant concoctions. There is one occasion when I can answer the question ‘how many sleeps until Christmas’? When the answer is 365. It’s inevitable that it will be asked. Although 2020 is a leap year, so the answer is already wrong. I’ll revert back to the standard refrain. ‘A lot’. n
Michael Atkinson is a dad to two young sons, but occasionally finds the time to write on golf, whisky, fatherhood and politics.

T HE AR T OF
Furoshiki By Jeni Armstrong
A
fter a fantastic Christmas with my family, the buzz I experienced at the end of the day was hugely dampened as I tried to stuff the last of the wrapping paper into our landfill bin. Wrapping paper, whilst beautiful and cheaply available, is commonly full of mixed materials like glitter, foil, plastic and dyes. All of this, plus the sellotape still attached, makes it very difficult to recycle. Seeing all this waste and imagining it multiplied by almost every home in the UK, left me frustrated. I felt there must be an alternative to the thousands of miles of single-use paper giftwrap that is thrown into landfill every year. A few months later, a friend showed me a video of someone wrapping a gift in fabric using the Japanese technique of “Furoshiki”. I was so impressed with the beauty and simplicity of this technique that I was inspired to learn how to do this for myself. Furoshiki has actually been used in Japan for centuries as a method
56
of transporting, carrying or protecting belongings within knotted fabric. It is celebrated as being an environmentally friendly and reusable alternative to plastic bags and disposable wrapping. After researching and learning basic furoshiki techniques, I realised how easy it is to achieve a beautiful gift wrapped effect. There’s no need for sellotape or other adhesives as the fabric is tied around the gift. This makes the whole process of gift-wrapping faster and less fiddly, as well as the added bonus of being reusable. There’s no waste at all - you can either take the wrap back, as is commonly done in Japan, or you can gift the wrap as an extra present. Our society is starting to recognise the harm that single-use products are doing to our environment, so it’s my dream to give people an affordable alternative without compromising on that wonderful feeling when someone hands you a beautifully wrapped gift. I now teach Furoshiki Giftwrap workshops

around Edinburgh. I go through several different Furoshiki techniques to allow people to wrap various shapes and sizes of gifts, and to gain confidence in beautifully wrapping in fabric instead of paper. I’ve also been producing handmade Furoshiki wraps from home and supplying these to both my online shop and to small retail businesses within the city. The response to the workshops is fantastic! I feel it reflects the increasing desire for reducing waste and choosing to reuse rather than discard, and the awareness that our throw-away culture needs to change. n

Mediation is a highly effective method of dispute resolution. Couples and families are supported to communicate effectively to work out resolutions where they thought none were possible.
I
f you are separating, getting divorced, splitting-up or dissolving a civil partnership you will have a number of agreements and arrangements you will need to make. These decisions have wide ranging consequences and are frequently linked with difficult emotionally charged circumstances. If you are struggling to reach an agreement, then mediation can unlock the resolution you may now feel is impossible. Cherry Tree Mediation offers highly professional and approachable dispute resolutions. Their principal mediator, Laura McLaughlin, brings her extensive experience as a family solicitor allowing her to offer a new proactive mediation service. Laura’s experience in family courts means that she has a wide and diverse knowledge of asset division and contact arrangements. This allows her to suggest alternative resolutions that may not have previously been considered and to give both parties a detailed insight into whats involved in the court process and the comparative benefits of mediation.
60
IF YOU HAVE REACHED THE POINT WHERE YOU FEEL THERE IS NOWHERE ELSE TO GO, MEDIATION WILL UNLOCK NEW POTENTIAL RESOLUTIONS IS MEDIATION RIGHT FOR YOU? Mediation is open to anyone who feels that discussing their dispute with the assistance of a professional would be of benefit. If you have a conflict, whether arising out of a family breakdown, separation or a breakdown in communication, mediation can help you find a workable resolution.
www.mademagazine.co.uk
DOES MEDIATION REALLY WORK? Family mediation supports parties to find resolution to their conflicts in over 80% of cases. It’s highly effective in reestablishing communication, re-building relationships and building bridges. This results in the success and effect of mediation reaching far beyond simply resolving the conflict. WHAT IS INVOLVED IN THE MEDIATION PROCESS? Step 1 - Individual Meeting Your mediator will initially meet with all parties on an individual basis, where you’ll discuss your view of the conflict and what you hope to achieve from mediation. This will allow your mediator to devise a tailored programme for your joint sessions, and gives you a chance to ask any questions about the process. Step 2 - Joint Mediation Session Following your initial sessions, your mediator will meet with all parties involved in the dispute together, and use their skills to re-establish communication, then to encourage open discussion and finally to reach resolution.
A NEW WAY TO MEDIATE We offer a comprehensive mediation service covering all aspects of family conflict. www.cherrytree mediation.co.uk
Step 3 - Written Agreement Your agreement can be verbal only, or parties can request a written agreement or Memorandum of Understanding. This is a document drawn up by your mediator setting out clearly any agreements your have reached and how they will be monitored and enforced. IS MEDIATION CONFIDENTIAL? What is discussed during mediation is treated as strictly confidential. Your mediator will not discuss the nature of your discussions or any agreements you have reached with anyone outside of the mediation. n

CNM ALLOWED ME BACK INTO EDUCATION
AND THE CAREER I WISH I’D ALWAYS HAD

By Amie Charraudeau Nutritional Therapist Graduate, CNM (College of Naturopathic Medicine)
I
studied languages, then moved into media intelligence, after working in IT. Having used diet, supplements and exercise to address PCOS, I had a long-term interest in natural therapies and decided to turn my passion into a career which was flexible and far more interesting. My first GP visit for problematic menses was at 14. A PCOS diagnosis at 19 followed numerous visits to GPs, gynaecologists and endocrinologists. I was variously prescribed the contraceptive pill, metformin, the coil, antidepressants and many painkillers for painful periods. No nutritional/lifestyle advice was offered. I gained a lot of weight, my periods stopped, I developed acne, mood and liver problems. These worsened through poor dietary choices at university. Eventually a gynaecologist told me after an ovarian scan that I was unlikely to ever conceive naturally. My mum inspired me to try natural therapies. She persevered even when I declared I wasn’t interested and the GP told her not to put ‘faddy diet ideas’ into my head. She took the time and interest, bought me all the books… I remember her taking me into Waterstones to choose. It’s
62
entirely thanks to her I found the solution to my PCOS. After years of living in denial, I decided I was the only person who could make these changes and started researching the effects of diet and exercise. I didn’t want to feel miserable anymore! Having a lot of weight to lose, I removed all refined sugars and carbohydrates and added plenty of vegetables to my diet. I exercised at the campus gym daily. Within 4 months I’d lost 2 stone. I added herbal supplements, became adventurous with healthy meals and began to really listen to my body. My periods returned, my skin and energy improved, the weight kept coming off and my body shape changed completely, motivating me further to manage my own health. I’ve kept my weight to optimal levels, which is key to my hormonal balance. I’ve had 3 children without any issues, something I would’ve never imagined all those years ago when the gynaecologist said it wouldn’t be possible! What attracted me to CNM was the flexibility of weekend study and exciting course content. Although we hardly touched on nutrition the first year, I loved the thorough biochemistry, anatomy
www.mademagazine.co.uk
“I never thought it’d be possible to study again and make such a huge life change once I’d had children. The course structure at CNM allowed me back into education and the career I wish I’d always had. I qualified in the same week as having my third child! Being able to fit education and career around my family makes it all the more enjoyable. They’ve been on the journey with me and they’re certainly benefitting from my knowledge.”
and physiology foundation. The 200hrs’ clinical experience was a hugely important part of moving into practice. The transformation between year 1 and year 3 in knowledge, confidence and ability was amazing. I was in a great year group sharing this unique experience of revisiting education later in life. The support and friendships had an incredibly positive impact during my time at CNM and continued after graduating. Rewarding, inspiring and fascinating, my time at CNM and my qualification have opened up a whole new world to me. I feel part of a big community where there’s cooperation, sharing, and many great events, webinars and learning opportunities, it never feels like a chore. It benefits our clients and everyone learning from us! I have also embarked on an MSc in nutrition science. My practice focuses on women’s health. To be able to really listen to them, when they’ve so often felt unheard, to educate and support them to use the tools which helped me so profoundly, and to see the change in them, is a real privilege. The sense of empowerment they gain reminds me so much of myself once I’d learnt how to manage my health. It’s the reason I became a nutritional therapist. n

MADE meets...Waterbabies A
manda is Australian but has lived in Scotland for over 20 years. She lives with her husband, daughter and crazy dog, Rustie. Growing up in Australia Amanda could swim before she could walk, and has so many fond memories of time in her backyard swimming pool. Ashley is from Waterside in East Ayrshire where she lived on an Ostrich Farm with her parents, sisters, sheep, ponies and chickens! Growing up, swimming and horses were the big things in her life. Her parents always thought she would grow up to do something caring and nurturing for others, but they thought it would be the furry kind! MADE talks to Amanda and Ashley, owners of Edinburgh Waterbabies to find out more about the women behind the business… What inspired you to buy the Water Babies franchise? Amanda: I fell in love with Water Babies after my first lesson with my daughter seven years ago. I wanted to work for the company because it was so family orientated and I wanted a better worklife balance. I became a teacher but when the chance arose to take over the business last year, Ashley and I jumped at the chance. Ashley: I worked as a lifeguard from age 16, completed my swimming teacher’s qualifications, and ran swimming lessons with Camp America. When I returned home from America, l discovered Water Babies and their impressive family and business values. I was inspired by other Franchisees, and now I’m so grateful to have the opportunity to implant change and help drive the business forward. What’s the best thing about your job? Amanda: Definitely the babies! I adore teaching, and seeing my little swimmers achieving incredible things in the water. To see them so confident and happy makes my day. Ashley: Seeing little ones’ faces light up when they have finally achieved something that they have been trying to do for so long, then seeing
66
Ashley and Amanda
the joy on the carer’s face! It’s the most rewarding thing knowing that you made that difference. And the worst? Amanda: If a pool goes down for any reason it can be really disappointing. Ashley: When our little ones graduate from Water Babies. It’s very emotional, it’s never easy saying goodbye. What do you do in your spare time? Amanda: Believe it or not - swimming! As a family we go every weekend. I also love swimming myself and going to the gym. Running with my dog through our local woodlands is probably my favourite way to unwind. Ashley: I enjoy spending time with family and friends. I love the outdoors, going for walks but most of all I love eating out! What do you always have in your handbag? Amanda: Rocks, sticks, unicorns, or Shopkins! Ashley: Food! You never know when you are going to get hungry. What would you say to a parent who is thinking about baby-swimming for the first time? Go for it. You and your little one will have had the most amazing bonding times together in the pool. Don’t be overwhelmed by the thought of it. Once you have been for the first time you will see how easy it really is. n
