welcome Contributors We asked our contributors what makes them happy and here’s what they told us: Heidi Scrimgeour (pages 17-20)

Espresso martini, beach walks, long naps and my family

Cathy Tingle (page 49)

A well-turned phrase, the first sniff of a new season, seeing the likeness of my dad in my son, The Look of Love by ABC. (Sorry about that one).

It’s that time of year again when we like to focus on our daddy readers and celebrate all things fatherly. And what a lot we have in store for you this year! Heidi Scrimgeour kicks things off with five things we love about dads on pages 17-20, followed by the Triplet Dad on page 29 with his round-up on what is means to be a father. Then the Under-Fives Mum tells us what ‘Father’s Day’ specifically means in their house, and we share some of our favourite daddy-inspired gift ideas on pages 58 & 59! Phew! And of course you won’t have missed our fabulous front cover! Huge thanks go to Dads Rock and photographer Beautiful Bairns for that one. Wishing dads everywhere a Happy Father’s Day when it comes round on June 15th.

On guard! Gordon Love has run fencing classes since last century, and young children’s fencing classes - using foam swords, plastic foils, and well-padded two-handed swords - since early 2010. He began by “taking fencing where no fencing had gone before”, and he loves helping the games-console generation try out sword-fighting in the real world. He’s finding new talent by introducing fencing in less well-off areas and remote locations. Gordon’s young pupils have now won 10 Scottish Champion titles between them, and every one of his pupils at last year’s Scottish Championships won a place on the podium. www.fencingisfun.co.uk

things we love about you, Written by Heidi

Scrimgeour

We might never tell you this; but sometimes we go weak at the knees just watching you in action with the kids. From the way you mucked in (pun intended) with your fair share of newborn nappy duty to all the silly stuff you do to make the kids laugh, we appreciate you so much more than we might always let you know. So, in honour of Father’s Day, here are five reasons why we’re glad that you’re the Daddy…

made MAy / june 2014

17

FATHER’S DAY

Funny is an aphrodisiac, you know… We love it when you lark around with the kids. Yes, we know it might not seem like that when we’re moaning at you for getting the kids all wound up right before bedtime yet again, but we’re secretly in awe of your capacity for fun. The kids adore you for it and yes, we admit it, it makes us feel sort of strange and gooey when we think about how you’re teaching our kids to laugh lots and enjoy life. Maybe you could teach us a thing or two about how you do it, sometime? Just please, not right before their bedtime… My friend Tiffany’s husband has the silly stuff down to a fine art. “He sings and dances to all the songs from Frozen during family tea time,” she says proudly. “It’s like dinner theatre at our house every night.” Yep, that’s exactly what we’re talking about. Keep up the good work, Dads. “I love the way the Dads I know are generally so good at being a big kid along with the kids,”

agrees mother of two Sonja. “As Mums that fun stuff is something that we don’t always seem to have the time for. My daughter Annabelle even calls her dad her ‘play-area’!” Isn’t that practically the definition of a good dad?

Daddy knows best (sometimes) We admit it, as mums we don’t always make time to answer the kids’ questions or explain all the little things to them about the world that really interest them. So we love it when you take time out to get down on the children’s level with them. My friend Kate reckons her husband, Kenny, is the best dad in the world at this. “I love watching him share the pure joy of their innocence, and seeing him join in with their sense of wonder at the world,” she says. “I love it when my partner engages our girls in stuff that wouldn’t ever cross my mind,” says mum of two, Gemma. “Like science experiments in the shower, spotting the phase of the moon, and working out - together - how stuff works.”

FATHER’S DAY

Being a great role model All kids need role models, and there’s nothing quite as heart-warming for a mum as the knowledge that their kids have a father figure worth looking up to. We know you’re not perfect, but all the stuff you do to set an example to our kids really means the world to us. You might think you’re ‘just being a dad’ but we think you’re going the extra mile, and that matters. My friend Krystle split from her little boy’s father and met her new partner when her son was just two. They’re now the best of friends, and she loves the wholehearted way her new hubby has taken on the step-dad role. “The best bit about their relationship is the unwavering support he shows my son; emotionally but also when it comes to discipline, plus being a role model and the all-important business of helping to keep him fed, clothed, warm and happy.”

Teaching the kids how to gang up against Mum

Let’s get one thing straight, we are NEVER going to admit this to you in front of the kids, but you know those times when you roll your eyes in our direction with the kids, or gently encourage them to gang up with you against us? We might act exasperated but secretly? We love it. My friend Estelle has three kids, and points out that being a great dad isn’t always about a biological role. “My partner Shane is a wonderful stepdad, and regularly spends more quality time with my youngest than I do these days,” she says. “He’s the one tucking her in - which usually means larking around doing puppet shows with the soft toys - and they definitely get together to gang up on me sometimes. And yes, I love it. Sometimes the biological link can be much less important than the love and care that good dads lavish on their kids.” made MAy / june 2014

Lightening the load

From pulling your weight with night feeds to taking the kids to the park so that we can go for a long, luxurious soak in the bath alone, we love you for all the ways you offer your support to us, as well. Mum of two Gail says her husband was a wonder when their kids were little. Not only did he regularly take their boys off on fishing trips or to the park to play football so that Gail could have a breather, but he showed “endless patience” with their kids too, she says. We might not always acknowledge that you’ve got those kind of qualities by the bucketload which we might lack - but we do notice it, and we think you deserve more credit. Throw in a hug or three for us as well on a daily basis, and you’re practically in the running for Father of the Year. “You can’t beat having someone there to give you a hug when you’ve had a long, hard day

of juggling work with running around after the kids,” agrees Lisa, mum of two. But my friend Hazel, who has two little girls, reckons she’s married to the best dad in the world. When I quizzed her as to exactly what he gets right and how other fathers could seek to replicate his winning ways, she trotted out a list of things he does, from cooking for the kids and taking the trouble to notice what they really like to eat, to making them beds and swings from scratch and teaching them how the garden works. “What’s funny is that it’s actually difficult to think of ALL the things he does that make

him such a brilliant dad, because there are so many that I sort of take it for granted and think he’s just an ordinary dad,” she says. “But actually, that in itself speaks volumes and shows what an extraordinary father he is to our girls.” Which got me thinking; the secret to being a brilliant Dad is never going to be a one-sizefits-all-formula. What makes you amazing is all the little things you do for our kids and to help nurture and protect our family. No-one else can do that better. Which leaves just one thing left to say: thanks, dads…. we think you are irreplaceable. n

It’s been an interesting time since last we spoke – a swirl of prelims and a passed driving test for my 17 yr old. And my 11 year old has picked up a boyfriend! I can confidently say I don’t know which of these I’m most worried about. The fact that my daughter failed to recognize that 50 and ‘half a century’ were the same thing the night before her maths higher exam does not bode well. And having passed her driving test, it will cost more to insure her than it does to run Scotland’s economy. As for the boyfriend, well, it was time for a little sex education chat. “He can hold your hand but he’s not allowed to touch your pants or your boobies” I informed the 11 yr old, at which point she passed out with shock and my 17yr old roared with laughter, until I informed 17 yr old that same rules applied to her.

Dear Jojo I have a tricky one here, my 10 year old and all her friends seem to be fascinated with bras! It seems my darling daughter is the only one not to have one, out the whole of her class! She’s still blessed not to need one, thank goodness! She’s made comments that her friends have matching ones, black ones and even padded ones, what should I do? I’m not a parent to submit to pressure, but she seems distressed with the matter. Anonymous, Musselburgh Dear Anonymous Pretend you’re deaf or simply just ignore her, she will eventually stop asking. But if she doesn’t, then maybe get one of those trainer bras which are essentially just tank tops. Or, lend her one of your own and see what she thinks. If you’re really pushed, I have a couple of 38DD ones that I’d be happy to give her.

Let’s face it – kids and weddings don’t always mix; quiet, serene churches; delicate, white dresses; long speeches and fancy food are not what kids are made of. But if your whole family is lucky enough to be invited to a wedding this summer you’ll want to make sure all eyes are on the bride and groom, and not your little darlings up to mischief. So, whether your tots have a special role to play as flower girl or page boy, or they are simply a guest, then here are some top tips to help you all survive the big day. © BARE KNEES KILTS

WEDDINGS

Be prepared

Buttons and Bows

There are some stunning dresses and mini-kilt outfits available these days that really could upstage the bridal party. Just make sure all kids clothing is comfortable, fits well, doesn’t have labels digging in, is too hot or itchy and that shoes have been broken in properly. Luxury brand, Bare Knees Kilts make kilts to order to fit perfectly and are 100% wool tartan. They are cleverly designed with a buckle and strap to prevent your little one stripping at an inopportune moment!

Clutch bags and sporrans aren’t the most spacious but do try to bring some quiet toys and supplies to keep little ones amused. Crayons, soft toys, non-sugary snacks and small books all do the trick nicely. Don’t forget a sachet of Calpol, plasters, tissues and wipes just in case.

Position yourself

In the church try to sit at the end of the row, or even at the back, so you can make a hasty getaway if needs be. I remember having to quickly remove my just-potty-trained son from a church when he declared at top of his voice he needed to pee-pee. Cue a swift exit for minimal embarrassment.

Try to have a run through in the church if possible, or even just practice slowwalking at home

© blessings & blossoms

Here come the kids…

If your son/daughter is involved in the wedding and they need to make their way up the aisle, make sure you explain to them exactly what they have to do. Try to have a run through in the church if possible, or even just practice slow-walking at home. Use music too so they know what to expect. It’ll be hard to re-create all the eyes on them, so on the day, try to sit somewhere they can see you and follow your lead. made MAy / june 2014

Call a nanny

I once attended a wedding where a nanny was available at all times in a special breakout room with toys, DVDs and basic arts & crafts (no paint!). This kept the kids amused whilst the grown-ups sipped Champagne and nibbled canapés. It is unusual for this amount of childcare to be offered but maybe you could consider arranging your own – or join up with another family to split the cost? Or maybe invite a friend or relative along to the church service

31

WEDDINGS

in case your little one simply can’t handle the long sit – it means they can escape for a few minutes and you don’t miss the important bits.

Kids table

If there’s a kids’ table at the reception make sure your child has everything he/she needs before you get comfortable at your own table; food cut into small pieces, enough juice to see them through the meal, vases of flowers removed and a successful toilet trip should mean you at least get to eat your starter in peace.

Dancing

This is where kids can really come into their own and give you the ultimate proud parent moment. They’ll hear the music, make their way

32

onto the dance floor and strut their funky stuff, making the older relatives smile. You can sit back and relax, while they tire themselves out. Or, of course, get up there and join them!

Champagne

Make sure your journey home is all planned so you can allow yourself a glass or two of bubbly – after all, it’s the perfect way to relax and celebrate. Has a coach been arranged for guests? Have you ordered a taxi? Our favourite solution is Scoot Ltd! You drive to the wedding in your own car, Scoot scoots to meet you there, they pack their scooter in your boot and drive you home. It means the kids are safely transported in their own car seats, you have your car waiting for you in the morning and it costs less than a taxi! The perfect ending. n

Sun Protection the Natural Way By Nutritionist, Frances

Bavin

One of my pet peeves is SPF factor in moisturiser. When the sun is out in Scotland, I want every last drop of it on my skin so that my body can make some vitamin D. Vitamin D protects us from various types of cancer (including melanoma), fights infections, keeps your bones strong, protects against the chances of autoimmune and cardiovascular disease. It is so worrying is that so many of us are deficient. I wanted to highlight how important vitamin D is today, but mainly I want to talk about ways you can make you and your family’s skin more resilient to the sun without having to rely on regular sun tan lotion with its concoction of chemical ingredients.

Why do we burn?

Burning is an inflammatory response and whilst it’s not a good idea to let it happen, in general we are eating an inflammatory diet which makes us far more prone to inflammation; as a result, we’re much more likely to get sun burnt. The worst offenders are: l Hydrogenated fats and vegetable oils, high in processed and takeaway foods l Sugar l Grains l Stress & poor sleep The top foods to introduce for sun protection: l Fats – Omega 3 from oily fish, coconut oil, extra virgin olive oil and even fermented cod liver oil. l Green leafy vegetables l Antioxidant rich foods – in particular tomato paste, wild salmon, green tea, a bit of natural dark chocolate made MAy / june 2014

l Vitamin C l Herbs like turmeric, ginger, parsley, cinnamon, rosemary Increasing vitamin D levels before the summer or going on holiday can help with the speed of tanning when you arrive, meaning that your skin will be naturally more resilient. It is a good idea to test your vitamin D levels over the winter and supplement accordingly with D3. If you haven’t been eating anti-inflammatory foods it will probably take a few months to get your skin ready. Here are my other suggestions to avoid the burn: l Use clothing with more coverage and shade, well before you get burnt. l Avoid the midday sun unless you are in Scotland, when it’s probably the only time to get vitamin D. l If you do have to be in strong sun, use a natural product like Green People or Badger Balm Sunscreen with zinc.

Under the sun… For more information, please contact Frances on 07505 053333 or through the website www.francesbavinnutrition.com

NURSERY MAKEOVER

AFTER

Lindsay’s story...

It had been nearly seven years, and we had come to the conclusion that we would always be a family of three. But, just as we’d given up hope, we found we were pregnant! We were euphoric, particularly our wee boy who had been desperate to have a brother or sister – he actually wanted an older brother, but we keep explaining that ship has sailed. As our dreams became reality, it was obvious that we were going to have to make a significant effort to make space for the baby. We have three bedrooms but over the years the third bedroom had become a dumping ground and our storage options were limited. Thankfully help was at hand. At The Big Day Out last October, I listened to Yvonne Hills talking about her new interior design business (Bloom Interiors). The thing that attracted me to Yvonne was that she was not aiming at high end properties; rather, she was focusing on ‘normal’ families with limited time, space and budgets. Yvonne came round and we chatted about our thoughts. From there she produced four mood boards, each with a different colour scheme, furnishings and accessories. She happily took into account the furniture and carpet we already had, our need to keep the costs down, and our desire to keep things simple. When we had first thought about the baby’s made MAY / JUNE 2014

room, we had just assumed a fresh coat of something fairly neutral. So it was quite a shock to realise that we both favoured the design with bright red stars and red accessories. We would never have considered such a bold choice had we been left to our own devices, but we loved it! Decisions made, our next step was to get a decorator and a blind-maker on board. We had previously used Dekor Style when we converted our garage, and had been blown away by the quality of their work and their astoundingly low prices. So it was a no-brainer to get them to do the decorating. We had never had blinds made before so Yvonne gave us quotes from three different suppliers. Ultimately we went with Liz Henderson who did a really lovely job. After much effort, shifting boxes, bags and filing around the house, we finally found a floor! The room has been designed, decorated and dressed beautifully. Tom is particularly proud of the bunting he helped make! Thanks to Bloom Interiors we now have the perfect nursery and we’re just waiting for the impending arrival…

NURSERY MAKEOVER

Nursery 4 – animal circus

All four design options can be found at www. bloominteriors.org.uk for anyone needing inspiration.

Yvonne’s story…. Lindsay saw me at an event last year and subsequently contacted me with regards to a room makeover. She needed a new nursery and I was delighted - nurseries are so special and I love designing them. They’re where a baby is welcomed into the world and where they start forming memories, so they need to be just right. I met Lindsay, Andy and son, Tom, in their home and we chatted through some ideas of colours and styles, anything I should avoid and practical points such as budget and timings. They were looking for a gender neutral design, nothing too dark. They also wanted Tom to be involved too, as he was keen to help decorate his little brother or sister’s room. During the briefing I measured up the room and we discussed requirements, such as what additional furniture was required, and possible colour schemes. The only colour that didn’t hit the mark was green (as a result of school uniform memories!) so I left that evening full of ideas of themes and potential art projects. I returned a couple of weeks later armed with my designs. Finding gender neutral options isn’t as easy as it might seem. Retailers increasingly seem determined to paint the world pink or blue so it can be challenging finding alternatives. I find I’m turning more regularly to online stores as their variety, uniqueness and cost simply can’t be found on the high street.

42

I shared four options with Lindsay, Andy and Tom. The individual themes carried a colour palette and included specific fun and easy art projects that reflected each of the concepts. I also worked with existing furniture to help make the project as affordable as possible including Tom’s old cot and changing table. After chatting over the merits of each, ‘Animal Circus’ came through as the favoured design. I was thrilled and left Lindsay and Andy with contact details for tradesmen and a revised shopping list for furniture and decorative items to enable them to decorate the room at their own pace. As with all my projects, the most rewarding aspect is seeing the end result and the joy on my client’s faces. With this job in particular however, it was seeing Tom’s reaction and how proud he was that he’d added his own mark! n

Elliott, Away with the Kids

Do you remember the first time you had to negotiate stepping out of the house after having your baby? I was filled with dread and thought I’d never make it. I was only to going to visit a friend who already had kids and had kindly offered to cook us dinner. Getting ready was no fun – I had dropped the baby tummy but the bits elsewhere weren’t quite where they should be so nothing fitted. I ended up nicking my husband’s jeans and doing something with a smock and a belt and hoping for the best. My baby bag meanwhile was ready – or as ready as I could manage: nappies (about 10), wipes (two packs), baby bibs (a few), change of clothes (a wardrobe) and filled to the top with muslin squares. No bottles as I breast fed. It took me an hour and a half to get out of the door. That was for dinner somewhere already kitted out for babies. Imagine how I felt when we were due to go to the States with a toddler and a baby of three months. Dr. Bach’s rescue remedy was poured down my throat, not sprayed on my tongue, and then I had to give it up at customs. Good job there was a Boots at the other side as a meltdown was likely! What to take? Well, the baby (I hoped) would sleep for some of the eight hour flight – and all she ever needed was my hands to gawp at made MAY / JUNE 2014

and my boobs. Our toddler had always been a delightful kid but I recognized this was asking a lot even of her. So we packed her Trunki with crayons, colouring and reading books, board games, soft toy, snacks, her blanket (‘Bo’, which I watched like a hawk) and some little card games. It weighed a ton and offered sufficient challenge to wheel to keep her occupied, whilst we struggled with the rest of the luggage.

Our tips! Make sure to take…

• Calpol: In sachet or bottle form. Everywhere. • Arnica cream: It’s magic cream – the girls believe, I believe. • Sudocrem: I can’t imagine life without it. • Wipes, wipes and more wipes: For mopping up baby sick, wiping bums, cleaning faces and hands, wiping loo seats etc. etc. • A bag for each child: Filled with ‘To Do’ things and snacks – it makes them feel important and ensures they have stuff they actually want. • Smartphone/ iPad/ iPod: As an adult we might think ‘never in our day’ but this day is very much theirs and that’s the way it is! Freedom, walks, fresh air – there’s a time and a place – on a long flight anything goes!!! Good luck out there. n

ADVERTORIAL

Energy Gym Kids Energy Gym, nestled downstairs at Boroughmuir Rugby & Community Sports Centre, has grouped together with many of the leading children’s activity clubs in and around Edinburgh to form EnergyGym Kids. ‘We want to make the classes at Energy Gym the go-to destination for children and families’ said Gordon Love of Fencing is Fun (FiF). Gavin Barry, the proprietor of Energy Gym told us, “We deliberately set out to select the best providers of a wide range of children’s activities, and we’ve been delighted with the enthusiasm they’ve all shown for setting up EnergyGym Kids.’’ Acti-fit run a brilliantly innovative set of activities, using the games console gadgets children are used to these days, combined with dance-mats, exercise machines, and computerised football targets. The children exercise before they’ve even noticed that’s what they’re doing. It’s too much fun to be exercise! Fencing is Fun (FiF) works to similar ends using foam daggers and all manner of padded, foam and plastic swords to get the children having their fun. They’ve got a carefully developed grading system and run massive competitions, which keep the girls and boys returning year after year; right from when they’re tots until they’re moved on to train with multiOlympians and Commonwealth medal winners. For traditional sports, there are Rugbytots and A-Star Sports. Rugbytots is the UK’s premier rugby play programme, ready to help build up rugby-specific skills in children as

young as two. A-Star Sports coach a core of 10 sports, and introduce the children to even more; teaching the kids ball skills, but also the importance of team work, listening, taking turns and sportsmanship. Gavin told us, “All the sports coaches work hard to give the children much more than simply sport-specific skills; working on balance, co-ordination, agility, speed, and psychological and social skills too’. For dance, they’ve attracted instructors that cover almost the full spectrum. There’s Irish Dance Kids - and what better can you ask for than a principal dancer from Lord of the Dance? Angela Watson’s instructors are all Royal Academy of Dance trained, and they offer ballet, tap and modern, and “Mummy and me” classes. There’s even Zumba Kids for the children too! For younger ones, EnergyGym Kids offers Baby Sensory, Bambino Beats, Jo Jingles and Monkey Music, with a wide selection of music, song, movement and other ways to stimulate your child’s imagination from their very earliest months. n

By Under-Fives Mum

Father’s Day

Every Monday is Father’s Day in our house. That’s the day I retreat gratefully to a nice office to drink coffee and think thoughts, occasionally even writing some of them down, while my husband looks after our two children. One in four dads doesn’t take paternity leave, according to a recent report, so I realise I’m lucky to be married to someone who shares the childcare, and whose employer allows him to work flexibly. My own dad also had a flexible employer − the Church. Apart from Sundays, when he couldn’t really avoid working, he was master of his time. When we got home from school he’d desert his typewriter for half an hour to chat. When he was in the office – well, it was only down the hall - we could always pop in. But, being an oldfashioned type, Dad didn’t help much with the practical aspects of our care. The only time he cooked was when Mum went into hospital once and then it was pretty much chips and tinned soup. We didn’t mind. Kids adore their dads however much or little they help out − it’s mums that are really affected by what they do around the house. And in the eight months since we started Dadly Mondays, I’ve certainly noticed a difference in ours. I’m happier because I have a work routine. Sunday nights aren’t doleful anymore. My husband has gained useful skills – unloading the dishwasher while holding a baby, tidying as he goes rather than facing a bombsite at the end of the day, scrambling eggs in two minutes flat, getting everyone out of the door in time for our daughter’s nursery (I always arrive late). The other day I even taught him to plait her hair, a lesson rendered necessary by her lopsided appearance one morning – one

ILLUSTRATION: SAM MILLER www.sammiller.co.uk

plait had survived from the day before, the other was more of a loose twist because he hadn’t realised he should use three strands, not two. Thankfully she’s not too self-conscious yet. And dressing the kids? Let’s just say that he’s less bothered by colour co-ordination than I am. But he’s better at making sure they eat their veg and brush their teeth. And, if I’m being honest, he makes far less heavy weather of parenting than I do – something I envy. The biggest change, though, is less tangible. One Monday I got home and recognised a weariness in his eyes and voice, a patience stretched thin, that most mothers of young children will identify with. He hasn’t got as far yet as finding wee socks, hairclips and half biscuits in his coat pockets, but now I feel that he understands what I do, day-today. A mum can’t really ask for more from a dad than that. n

FRANCESCA SIMON

Francesca Simon

Award-winning author, Francesca Simon is best known for her multimillion selling Horrid Henry series, but her latest books show her turning her hand to something different. Nichola Hunter finds out more 52

You were a mediaevalist and a successful freelance journalist and then you became a mum, was that the catalyst for you to become an author? “I’ve always been interested in writing but becoming a mum was definitely the catalyst for writing children’s books. Even though I was interested in writing I had no idea I would be good at writing for children. It was looking at books with Josh and reading together that gave me tonnes of ideas. I started writing immediately although it took me about a year to get published. Of course, I did worry I was a just a crazy mother in the baby bubble, as obviously I had experience as a journalist but I’d never written a children’s book.

www.mademagazine.co.uk

FRANCESCA SIMON

Did having a small child provide you with lots of writing material? “Josh inspired Do you speak English, Moon? but he didn’t provide much material. He did tune me more into a child’s concerns, such as Horrid Henry doing a dance class or him wanting to be sick and stay at home, but I used myself more than Josh. He is more responsible for me becoming a children’s writer than being responsible for the kind of books I write. If I hadn’t had Josh I wouldn’t have become a children’s writer. I wouldn’t have known I could do it. Was it difficult to combine writing and motherhood when Joshua was small? “One of the reasons I started phasing out journalism and focusing on children’s books was because the deadlines in journalism are so unforgiving. I had 10 hours a week with a young student who looked after Joshua and that was my writing time. And that actually made me incredibly efficient. I would drop him at nursery and then run home because I knew I only had two hours and I would just work as fast and as hard as I could. In some ways I was more productive because I had no time to waste.” What’s the hardest part about writing a book? “Getting started and finishing! Doing that first draft and sticking with something. My newest book The Lost Gods is for older children (9+) and a book like that takes over a year to write so you have to be very focused.” And your favourite part? “Having written is the best part. When you know the book is going to work. So I’m happier when I’m doing second and third drafts. And also just seeing your book as a book. I’m looking at The Lost Gods right now and it’s amazing to see something you’ve worked on so hard when the drafts are still lying on your floor but there it is, it’s done.” When Josh was older did you test your stories out on him? “I’ve always read my stories out loud either to made MAY / JUNE 2014

Josh or I used to go into his primary school and I’d read aloud to his class. I find it’s essential. If I don’t get the opportunity to read out aloud to children I will read aloud to myself - you just hear if things aren’t working or if a bit is boring. How does Josh feel about your career now? “He also wants to write so he quite enjoys me being a writer. In a way, fortunately for him, the Horrid Henry books didn’t become popular until just above his age group. So he never had any issues at school because people didn’t know or didn’t care. People are always curious that he’s Horrid Henry which he isn’t. I often make him stand up at book signings and ask people to keep an eye on him to see if they can tell if he’s Horrid Henry or Perfect Peter – he’s very good natured.” You are best known for the Horrid Henry series but you have written many other books. They all seem to have one thing in common – great illustrations. Is that something that’s important to you? “For a picture book – absolutely. I waited two years for Ben Court to do Moon but for older books, it’s not my domain. I tend to leave illustrators alone. I pick someone who is absolutely great and then let them do what they want. If you pick a great illustrator it’s really fun to see what they come up with.”

53

FRANCESCA SIMON

© TONY ROSS

Of course, I did worry I was a just a crazy mother in the baby bubble

Are you happy with the interpretations of Horrid Henry as a film and stage show? “I read the script for the film and frankly I thought it had no bearing on Horrid Henry. So I never even saw it. However, I really enjoyed the stage show. It was adapted by John Godber, one of Britain’s top playwrights and he knows what works and I think he really managed to capture the spirit of the books.” Your recent book Do you speak English, Moon? is very different from your previous ones both in style and illustrations, was that a conscious effort to do something different? “It evolved naturally and it all came from Joshua standing up on his bed one day looking at the moon and saying: “Do you speak English, Moon?” Because of the nature of that question it was always going to be a different kind of story. Someone feeling scared and wanting to be comforted by the moon and children always see the moon as a friend. My writing is usually funny but this is a quieter one.”

54

You were in Edinburgh for the last Book Festival, what was the best bit about your visit? “This was my 14th visit to Edinburgh. It was a wonderful Book Festival and I particularly enjoyed seeing Margaret Atwood and Neil Gaimon. I also love the comedian Rich Hall and I went to see his Hoedown and it was absolutely wonderful. I took Josh to see him a long time ago and it never occurred to me that a comedian would attack a kid from the stage but he did. He directed much of the show to Josh urging him to “stay out of prison!” How did you find the Scottish fans? “I sometimes struggle with the names and the accents but they’re great. I actually got one of the titles for my books here! I was talking to an Edinburgh crowd and they kept asking me if I liked horror films, which I don’t, and they all kept asking the same question. I said: “Look this is the last time I’ll answer this, I don’t like horror films – what do you want? Horrid Henry and the Mummy’s Curse? Then I thought that’s quite a good title…. Did you get to see any of Edinburgh when you were here and if so what was your favourite part? “Just the whole buzz of the city during the festival. Every building, shop and school has been turned into a theatre – I love that the whole of the city becomes a theatre venue and I always feel very inspired when I visit.” What’s next? “Lots more Horrid Henry for 2014 and I’m also writing a follow-on book to The Lost Gods.” n

MARLENKA

Honey Cake

A golden start ...

The story begins in 1704, when an Armenian founded the first Czech coffee lounge in Prague, named The Golden Snake. Nearly three hundred years later, in 1995, the Armenian Gevorg Avetisyan came to the Czech Republic to settle there with his family. He begged God to show him the right way to support his family and promised that if He helped him, he would have the Saint Jost Church cross restored. Not long after that, he recalled a miracle - a honey miracle; a traditional Armenian family recipe of his favourite layered honey cake. Initially, the cakes were baked just for his friends, but later on he offered them to local coffee shops and confectioners and the honey delicacy quickly gained great popularity.

56

The fragrant, sweet and smooth cake was named after his mother and daughter - Marlenka. Popularity and reputation grew, and in 2012 MARLENKA established itself in Edinburgh and now supplies delicious, all-natural products to fans all over the UK. In 2013 MARLENKA Enterprises was crowned one of the best in the UK in the country’s leading parenting Netmums Awards (www.netmums.com). The popular cake company in Edinburgh was voted runner up in the Scotland Region Best Children’s Party Supplier. Dubbed the UK’s ‘Parenting Oscars’, more than a million parents and child carers were eligible to vote for the huge UK-wide prize. Netmums founder, Siobhan Freegard, said: “Putting on parties for little ones is very big business and the competition has been intense

I am not ashamed to say, I love the fact my kids are growing up. We are often told to enjoy them whilst they’re young and make the most of the early years because before we know it they’ll be packing their bags for university. The baby and toddler years are gone in an instant! And these are the most special moments we’ll ever have with our children. But, is that true?

60

It does get easier

Both my children are school age and no one told me when I was a sleep-deprived mother of two under-fives, that it gets easier. It’s actually really hard to wake five times a night with a needy newborn and then push a double buggy to baby yoga the following morning, trying to look serene and fresh faced while you threaten your toddler with no Bob the Builder TV time unless he lies down on the

GROWING UP

mat. I remember all of us catching the vomiting bug and having to feverishly run round after two infants who didn’t have a clue what was happening nor the vocabulary to tell me how bad they were feeling. I realise now that a lot of those early years were spent stressed out and exhausted and dreading all the exasperated mornings my husband closed the door behind him, when I had to break the day in to manageable chunks just to get through it.

Nowadays, things are more exciting and there are no tantrums

Dads can be more hands-on

I don’t feel so isolated now, as our parenting is more evenly balanced. Dads seem to be more involved in older children’s lives. For a start, they appear able to relate to them better now they’re proper little people, rather than precious, delicate babies who cling to mummy because she feeds them. As children grow up, they take more of an interest in parents’ hobbies and this gives dad a chance to take them out on the golf course or to the swimming pool or perhaps into his workshop. Dads love this sort of family bonding and so do children.

I actually have some time to myself And because dads are enjoying the sports and hobbies that bigger kids can now do, mums have more time to themselves! When my two were very small I wanted to be with them all the time and they needed that. But, now, I am proud to see them growing up with confidence and independence. They have busy itineraries (far more so than me!). They do sports, art, drama, school trips, music and, more and more so now, things like quiet reading. Yes, quiet!

I mean tug at your heart strings). We can play board games and cards, stay out together a little later, go climbing or kayaking or camping – all with relative ease. We no longer require a separate trailer to haul about the pram, car seat, travel cot, bumbo seat, high chair, baby bath, toys, special blankets, carefully prepared food, breast pump, bottles, portable potty, change of clothes, blender.... In fact, on a whim we can call the kids, grab our jackets and head out for a walk. A real walk, where we actually get to stretch our legs and not just toddle to the end of the block in an excruciating doubled over stance, with a toddler attached to one finger on each hand. So, I confess - love them growing up! I have amazing memories of them when they were little bundles which I could just pick up and cuddle. But, nowadays, things are more exciting and there are no tantrums. My children are actually well mannered, helpful and funny people. I love being around them and I can’t wait to see what happens in the next few years. n

There are so many more things we can do as a family

As a family, we can now do a lot more too. We can all go to the cinema and see a film which is truly good fun for everyone, not just an invasion of colourful tinkling tunes and animated fluffy characters trying to assault your senses (oops! made MAY / JUNE 2014

on trial: Yu Spa at Apex Waterloo Place Hotel Busy parents all deserve some time out to relax and recharge the batteries. In this issue of MADE, mum of three, Carol, gives us the low-down on her visit to Yu Spa. Yu Spa claims: Its single and double bed treatment rooms, ozone pool, sauna, steam room, relaxation room and gym offer the perfect place to unwind and de-stress. They suggest you combine your spa visit with a two course lunch at Elliott’s Restaurant to properly pamper yourself.

Carol says: As a busy mum with three kids, working part time and feeling generally like a taxi service I really felt like I needed some ‘me-time’. Our weekends are precious family time so I was really looking for some pampering while the kids were in school. A small group of my mummy friends and I decided we were going to chill out in style together so we all headed to Yu Spa. We booked the Pamper Yu package for just £65 per person, which gave us plenty time to chill out in the pool, enjoy the sauna and steam room before going for a lovely treatment. I opted for the scalp, neck and shoulder soother with hot stones which was amazing at getting all the knots out and I felt really pampered. Lying in peace on the heated bed with spa music I was just about drifting off before the treatment had started and it felt like I was there for ages. It was just the downtime I needed. After the treatments we all went to Elliot’s Restaurant for a delicious two course lunch and a glass of Prosecco (or soft drink) and we had a brilliant catch-up together.

The verdict… The spa day totally recharged our batteries, so we were ready to take on the world again - we will definitely be coming back. Although next time I might bring my husband and make use of their couple’s room! For more information go to www.yuspa.co.uk/edinburgh
