This 1876 Victorian mansion was built by Benjamin C. Boorman, a native of England. In 1864, he bought the Mauston dam, mills and water rights from the estate of M. M. Maughs. After a fire that destroyed the mills, he rebuilt a mill on the north side of the Lemonweir River to produce flour and feed. Later he built a sawmill and a wool carding mill on the south side of the dam and began construction of the Boorman House in 1874. The home features a grand staircase, a drawing room and a widow’s walk.
Drive out of New Lisbon on Hwy M past Kennedy County Park and you’ll cross the Lemonweir River over the Buckley Bridge. The mill was built in 1850 and only its rock foundations can be seen today. 608-562-5213

Native Americans have long history in area For a moment, close your eyes and imagine what life was like in south central Wisconsin several centuries ago. Before Wisconsin Dells became a tourist hub and the I-90-94 corridor roared through Juneau, Sauk and Columbia counties. The land we now call Mauston, Portage, Baraboo and the Sauk Prairie area was filled with Ho-Chunk, Potawatomis, Sacs and Foxes — among others. For thousands of years, natives lived off this beautiful area of marshes, bluffs, hills and rivers. Native Americans left an indelible mark on southcentral Wisconsin and many dedicated Ho-Chunk are still working hard today to preserve that legacy. Ancient history in Juneau County As director of the New Lisbon Memorial Library, Deanna Laufenberg couldn’t have asked for a better gift. With the library set to expand and add a history wing in the spring of 2016, Laufenberg received a donation from the Harry Mortensen family that took years to collect but is several thousands of years old. During the 1960s, Mortensen collected more than 12,000 Native American artifacts, dating from 500-1,200 A.D. Mortensen’s collection includes many ancient tools: arrowheads, spear points, scrapers, knives, axe and hammer heads, including bits of earthenware pottery. The artifacts are believed to have originated from the Woodland people, the first humans to roam Juneau County more than a thousand years ago. At one time, most of Juneau County, and much of Wisconsin, was covered by a huge glacier. As the Ice Age ended, the glacier melted, forming a large lake, known as Lake Wisconsin. However, the vast lake drained and formed the Wisconsin River about 12,000 years ago. After Lake Wisconsin drained, the Woodlands, a nomadic tribe, filtered into the area, hunting, farming and gathering. They left behind plenty of items and Mortensen discovered a treasure trove of native tools. With more than 4,000 pieces — all found in Juneau County — it’s one of the largest personal collections in the state. Mortensen’s goal was to keep his vast collection in Juneau County and give future generations the opportunity to enjoy artifacts from a time when Wisconsin looked very different from the state we know today. Eventually, by the time the first Europeans explored Wisconsin in the mid-1600s, the Woodland had divided into separate tribes such as Menominee, Ho-Chunk (also known as Winnebago) and Chippewa. The New Lisbon library also received arrowheads and other artifacts from Roger Mortensen (no relation). As a young boy in the 1960s, Roger joined his dad, Alvin, on arrowhead expeditions along the shallow shores of Castle Rock Lake and across freshly plowed fields throughout the county. “Dad would look for plowed fields with high sand rises because that’s where the native residents would build their camps because it was higher, dryer and on sand. When he found a good field, he would get permission from the property owner, primarily after rains because that’s when the top would be washed off and you
10
could see the arrowheads,” Mortensen said. “That’s how we collected a good majority of them.” During the mid-60s, the water level at Castle Rock Lake was lowered for maintenance, unveiling hundreds of native artifacts. Roger, his mother Raynette, and his four siblings would often join Alvin for his arrowhead hunting excursions. “My dad passed away in March and a couple of us found it very appropriate, especially with Harry’s collection here, that this would be a great place to have it settled,” Mortensen said. “It pales to Harry’s, but it’s still a very nice collection.” Laufenberg believes some of Harry Mortensen’s collection is more than 10,000 years old. One of the most unique items among the artifacts is a fragment of melted sand, hardened after a lighting strike and preserved for centuries. “We would find an awful lot of those,” Roger Mortensen said. Laufenberg believes the native collection can serve as a terrific educational tool, especially after the library finishes its expansion project. The library isn’t the only place in New Lisbon to find ancient native history. New Lisbon Indian Mounds Park, also known as Gee’s Slough Group, is located on Indian Mounds Road, a few miles south of New Lisbon on Highway 12 and 16. The park features several rolling burial mounds and the sacred native landmark was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in the 1970s. The mounds consist of three conical, two linear and one dumbell mound, along with a unique effigy shaped like a running panther. Gee’s Slough Group once had seven additional mounds that were destroyed. “When we were (searching for artifacts) there were a lot of effigy mounds in Juneau County and a lot of them were destroyed or ones we would find were already scavenged, but there were a lot of them,” Mortensen said. The mounds near New Lisbon should stay preserved for a long time. The land is owned by the local Lions club, which maintains the historic site. The Town of Armenia also features several effigy mounds, along with Mauston and several other spots in south central Wisconsin. In an article from 1906 that appeared in both the Baraboo Daily News and the Baraboo Weekly News, Verne S. Pease believed the ancient mounds were built by natives that pre-dated tribes such as the Sacs, Foxes, Pottawatomes, Menominees and Chippewas because these tribes immigrated from Canada in more recent centuries. Natives of Juneau County left their mark in other ways,
too. Near Hustler, ancient petroglyphs are etched into the stone along Twin Bluffs and the bluff at the mouth of the Lemonweir River. The pictorial etchings (one resembles a thunderbird) are believed to have been carved by the Winnebago Ho-Chunk tribe between 100 B.C. to 1650 A.D. Reedsburg rallies around Winnebago family Early American history is filled with unfortunate accounts of white settlers driving Native Americans — sometimes forcibly — from the land they called home for centuries. However, one Winnebago family was spared from deportation more than 140 years ago thanks to several passionate and loyal residents in Reedsburg. On December 26, 1873, a detachment of 51 U.S. troops, led by Capt. S.A. Hunt, traveled to Reedsburg from Sparta, with the direct orders to remove the family of chief Ah-Ha-Cho-Ka, also known as Blue Wing, from their village to a reservation in Nebraska. Ah-Ha-Cho-Ka’s family was well respected members of the Winnebago tribe for many years in the Reedsburg area. While several other Winnebago tribesmen had been captured a couple days earlier near Portage, with the support of white villagers in Reedsburg, Ah-Ha-Cho-Ka’s family wasn’t going anywhere. According to an article by Sauk County Historian Bill Schuette that appeared in the Reedsburg Times-Press, Blue Wing had welcomed early white settlers to Sauk County and was known for his “good nature, kindness and integrity.” He was known for being fair and was often treated as a guest of white settlers upon their arrival to Reedsburg. Blue Wing was a U.S. citizen and landowner. Despite Blue Wing’s local status, Hunt and his soldiers began rounding up Winnebagos, including the chief’s wife, children and grandchildren. Outraged, the citizens of Reedsburg obtained a writ of habeas corpus (an order to release a party from unlawful restraint), and Sauk County Deputy Sheriff H.D. Buel led a group of angry citizens to the Reedsburg train depot where Capt. Hunt and his men were ready to transport the Winnebagos out of state. According to a report in the Jan. 2, 1874 Reedsburg Free-Press, officers were prepared to ignore the writ of habeas corpus until they realized how passionate the locals were to keep the family in Reedsburg. After a fair hearing was conducted, Hunt and his posse relented, and Blue Wing’s family stayed in Sauk County. As Schuette recalled in his article “the heroic actions of Reedsburg’s citizens that day helped, in part, to convince the U.S. government to abandon its inhumane policy of Indian relocation.” While more than 140 years have passed since the Reedsburg incident, Schuette believes it was a unique moment that showed the value of Native American tribes in Sauk County during a time when many were being driven off their land to reservations far from home. As for the wise, old Blue Wing or Ah-Ha-Cho-Ka, he died in Tomah in 1893 and was believed to be 114 years old at the time of his death.
Historic Indian Agency House still stands in Portage From the days of explorers Fr. Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet, Europeans and Native Americans built a long history in Portage, dating back to 1673. Marquette and Joliet “portaged” over the area between the Fox and Wisconsin Rivers to reach the mighty Mississippi. However, it wasn’t until 1832 when the U.S. government established the Indian Agency House in Portage to foster relations between white settlers and the Ho-Chunk Nation (Winnebagos at that time). The Indian Agency House, built in 1832 for Indian Agent John Kinzie and his wife Juliette, still stands in its original spot, “the portage” between the Fox and Wisconsin. The Kinzies only lived there for two years (1832-34), but Juliette documented the couple’s days at “the portage” in her memoir “Wau-Bun, the ‘Early Day’ in the Northwest.” The house, built in the Federal style popular in the early 1800s, is one of the oldest in Wisconsin. It’s been outfitted with household items and furnishings from the 1830s and the home is open for guided tours every year from May to October. The historic home was restored by the National Society of Colonial Dames of America in 1932 for its 100th birthday and, in 1972, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Portage’s historic Indian Agency House serves as an important link to a time when Wisconsin was still largely inhabited by native residents. For more information, call 608-742-6362. Sacs take over western bank of Wisconsin The Ho-Chunk spread their territory from Lake Winnebago through Columbia and Juneau counties, while the Sacs and Foxes developed their home on the western bank of the Wisconsin River, home to present day Prairie du Sac and Sauk Prairie. It’s believed the Sacs and Foxes settled this area in the 1730s and were often in conflict with the French who occupied Wisconsin at the time. In 1766, Captain Jonathan Carver visited the Sac village and marveled that it was the best Indian village he had seen. Carver described the homes and streets being so neatly organized and well kept that it appeared similar to a white settlement. The Sacs were known as a very industrious, efficient tribe. Eventually, in 1783, the Sacs moved south to the confluence of the Rock and Mississippi rivers. However, some returned for the Battle of Wisconsin Heights during the Black Hawk War in 1832. According to Pease, it was “six weeks of hysterics among the white settlers.” The Battle of Wisconsin Heights was waged on the bluffs across the river from Sauk City. But, Black Hawk’s brave group couldn’t withstand the bloodshed, especially after U.S. forces killed hundreds of Sauk and Potawatomi at the mouth of the Bad Axe River in southwestern Wisconsin. Black Hawk eventually surrendered to an Indian agent at Prairie du Chien. Despite many natives being driven away from the local area, their impact remains. Their names and culture can be found in almost any direction one looks.

Welcome To Juneau County! Juneau County, WI was established in 1857 when the State of Wisconsin passed legislation separating lands west of the Wisconsin River from what was then Adams County. After a contest with neighboring New Lisbon, the county seat was established in Maugh's Town, which is known today as Mauston. The county was named after Solomon Juneau, a Milwaukee legislator who influenced the legislation establishing Juneau County. The county board of early Juneau County convened only once a year to conduct the business of the slow moving, remote county. Today, Juneau County retains the charm of the early days, while it moves forward into the future of electronic government. Juneau County is your pathway to adventure. exploring or enjoying the many tastes of Juneau County. Juneau County's natural beauty brings year round pleasure to area residents and visitors alike. Geographical diversity is a hallmark of Juneau County. From sand country to hill country, from northern forests to unglaciated “driftless areas,” we have beautiful and scenic landscapes. First, some history is in order. Most of what is today’s Juneau County was carved out of the sandstone bedrock during the last North American Glacial Period some 18,000 years ago. For a long time, Juneau County was covered by the glacial Lake Wisconsin. The lake (up to 150’ deep) stretched over 1,800 sq. miles from Tomah to the west and up to Stevens Point in the north. A huge natural dam formed by rock, earth and sand burst some 14,000 years ago. After three days it took to drain the lake, the runoff created a new course for the Wisconsin River, carved out the Wisconsin Dells and moved south toward Baraboo to create Devil’s Lake.
The rocky outcroppings, called buttes or bluffs, you see throughout the central and northern part of the county are really the tops of islands that dotted the surface of glacial Lake Wisconsin. If you’re ambitious, climbing to the top of one of these ‘islands’ shows you the outline of the old lake. The low and sandy prairies you see are the old lakebed. Much of the southern part of the county escaped the destructive force of the last glacial period and is part of the “driftless” region of Wisconsin. Deep valleys, high ridges and quiet rural life make this area a special place to visit. Add to that the quiet joy of some of the nation’s finest bike trails, canoeing on the Lemonweir and Wisconsin River, golfing, horseback riding, hiking, snowmobiling, ATV riding, hunting, fishing, antiquing, waterskiing and camping, you’re in for a rare treat. We invite you to embark on your Juneau County adventure. We know you’ll find a reason to stay for a day, a week, or a lifetime.
Juneau County History!
Juneau County was founded on October 13, 1856 from Adams County. The county was named in honor of Solomon Juneau (1793-1856), founder of what would become Milwaukee.
Our heritage adventure starts with a look backwards in time at the people and places of Juneau County. The first known inhabitants of the area were the people of the Woodland Culture. Many artifacts are contained in the Harry Mortensen Collection housed in the New Lisbon Memorial Library and date from 500 to 1200 A.D. These semi-nomadic people hunted, gathered and farmed this area after the draining of glacial Lake Wisconsin some 14,000 years ago. These early people raised corn, squash and beans and harvested wild blueberries, cranberries and other wild fruit for use during their winter camps. Others harvested wild rice, buffalo, deer, moose and other wild game. The rivers of Juneau County were the highways that allowed exploration. Rivers such as the Wisconsin, the Lemonweir, the Yellow and the Baraboo were used to harvest the abundant natural resources of the county and early settlements along those rivers included Mauston, New Lisbon, Necedah, Elroy and Wonewoc. After the period of early exploration, trading
posts and sawmills sprang up to harvest the abundant pine timber that covered the county. Unwise harvesting practices soon exhausted these resources and as the land was stripped, agriculture took hold. Crops of summer wheat, tobacco, corn, sphagnum moss, hops, grains and cranberries were harvested, sold and traded by early farmers who survived brutal winters and the backbreaking task of eking a living out of the land. Much of the land, especially in the northern part of the county, was unsuitable for agriculture and the sandy, light soil of the Lemonweir River Valley blew away during the spring. Add to this the difficulty and cost of getting good land from the many speculators who bought huge chunks of the available land at government auctions and sold it for profit, and you begin to see the problems these early farmers faced. Even with these long odds, agriculture became the largest industry in the county and today still holds that position. The mix is different now than it was back then. Dairy, hogs and sheep
are more prevalent and corn, soybeans and wheat are the main crops. With the coming of the railroads in the mid-1800s, Juneau County’s geographical location midway between Chicago and Minneapolis made it an important part of rail history. The City of Elroy was on the main line of the Chicago & Northwestern Railway and Mauston, New Lisbon and Camp Douglas were regular stops on the old Milwaukee Road. The present Interstate system (I90-94) roughly parallels the Milwaukee Road as it cuts diagonally across the county. Necedah was served by the Chicago & Northwestern and served as an important rail point for access to northern and central Wisconsin. At one time, passenger service was available at many of these stops to connect Juneau County residents with the world. The Chicago & Northwestern Railroad beds around Elroy, Camp Douglas, Union Center and Wonewoc have been converted into bike trails including the Elroy-Sparta State Trail, the Omaha Trail and the ‘400’ Trail.

Juneau County Lakes!
The Lakes The Lakes region of Juneau and Adams counties has something for everyone. Both Castle Rock and Petenwell Lakes are created by power dams on the Wisconsin River. The river forms the eastern boundary of the county. Castle Rock Lake is the fourth largest inland lake in Wisconsin and offers plenty of fishing, camping and boating. Buckhorn State Park, Castle Rock Park and Germantown Park offer visitors plenty of space to picnic and enjoy the view. Many campsites and resorts surround the lake and boat launches are plentiful. Whether your thing is jet skiing or sailing, there's plenty of big water for you to enjoy for a day, a week or a lifetime. Petenwell Lake is the second largest inland lake in Wisconsin, and is well known for its great fishing. Walleyes, northern pike, muskies and pan fish are plentiful and there are plenty of public boat launches available. The lake is 23,000+ acres over a 36 sq. mile area. It was created in 1948 by damming the Wisconsin River near Necedah. Its maximum depth is over 40' and is well-known for its excellent fishing and waterfowling. American eagles winter at the dam and can be observed daily during the season. Camping at Wilderness Park on Petenwell Lake ranges from full hookup to primitive and the scenery is great.

Paddle The Four Rivers Of Juneau County! Yellow River Put in is at the Ninth Street landing just off Hwy. 80 on the south side of Necedah. The paddle to Castle Rock Flowage takes about 4-5 hours. No rapids but plenty of fallen trees for obstacles. The single vertical poles highline are about halfway to the Crappie Point takeout. When the river splits take river left channel. Then in the Yellow River Wildlife area Bald Eagles are often seen. When you see the Buckhorn Bridge paddle to the West Shore (river right) for Crappie Point landing. For more information www.necedah. us.canoe.html www.juneaucounty.com/canoe-kayaktube.html and river level information waterdata.usgs. gov/wi/nwis/uv?site_no=05403000 and click on the Yellow River readout.
Lemonweir River From the 37th Street landing 1000 feet west where County Hwy. M crosses the Lemonweir about 3 1/2 miles north of New Lisbon going downstream is a relative easy paddle for all levels of paddlers. Kennedy Park about 2 miles downstream has a boat landing, camping, outhouses and pump well water. Another 3 miles downstream is New Lisbon Riverside Park which has camping, indoor warm showers, toilets, electric hook ups and a boat launch site. For more information on this section call the City of New Lisbon at (608) 562-5213 weekdays or check the New Lisbon websites www.newlisbon.net or www.newlisbonchamber.com. From below the New Lisbon dam to Mauston is a 7 to 8 hour paddle for more experienced boaters because of the numerous trees in the river. After going around the bluff there is a boat landing river right on Lake Decorah. Further downstream is Riverside Park which has a covered picnic shelter, flush toilets and boat landing. For more information on this section as well as going further downstream to Lemonweir Mills call Mauston City Hall weekdays (608) 847-6676. For water levels and flows go to: waterdata.usgs.gov/wi/nwis/uv?wite_no=05403000 and go to New Lisbon on the Lemonweir. From below the Mauston Dam down to 19th Street
18
Lemonweir Mills is about a 3 hour paddle suitable for all levels of paddlers. From the 19th Street bridge downstream to the Two Rivers landing near the junction with the Wisconsin River is a long day journey depending upon deadfalls in the river, water levels, etc. For more information check www.juneaucounty.com/canoe-kayaktube.html.
Baraboo River Paddlers put-in upstream of Highway 33, at Union Center adjacent to the Spring Valley Golf Course. Going downstream to Wonewoc the flat water river follows a snake like scenic path through the “driftless area”. Halfway is a huge rock formation known as the Third Castle, a sheer 150 foot sandstone cliff. The 400 Bike Trail crosses the river at two points. Wonewoc Park has a boat landing, a covered picnic shelter, & toilet and downtown Wonewoc is nearby. Camping is available here, at Baker’s Field and at Wonewoc Legion Park. Canoe/kayak rentals and shuttle services are available in Wonewoc through Beyond Boundaries at (608) 464-7433. For additional information visit www.goingfarbeyond.com/bb_paddling. html, www.wonewocwisc.com/tourism_and_recreation/ and www.juneaucounty.com/canoe-kayak-tube.html.
Wisconsin River Petenwell and Castle Rock Flowage were created by dams on the river. Downstream of the Castle Rock dam to the flowage at River Bay landing is the primary Wisconsin River flatwater paddling section. Castle Rock Resort www.camptherock.com and 4 miles downtown on the west bank (river right) has camping and food/drink weekends. Less than 2 miles farther on the east bank (river left) Point Bluff Resort www.pointbluff.com has kayak/canoe/tube rentals and food and drink service. A couple miles further downstream a short paddle up the Lemonweir River is the Two Rivers boat landing. About 6 miles further down the Wisconsin River is the River Bay boat landing on the west side (river right). For water level information go to: waterdata.usgs.gov/wi/nwis/ uv?site_no=05403000 For more information go to www. juneaucounty.com/canoe-kayak-tube.html.
Wonewoc Wonewoc is the midpoint of the 400 State Trail. The 400 State Trail is one of Wisconsin’s newest recreational bicycle trails. The 400 State Trail is part of the 101 mile State Trail System.

Bike Trails
T
he many bike trails of Juneau County are just waiting for your visit. They all begin (or end) in Elroy WI, located on Hwys 80-82 in southwestern Juneau County. The ElroySparta State Bike Trail is the “Granddaddy of All Trails.“ It was the very first Rails to Trails Conversion in the United States in 1965. The hard-packed limestone trail covers 32 miles of an abandoned Chicago & Northwestern Railroad bed and has no more than a 3 % grade at any point. The trail passes through three tunnels as it makes its way toward Sparta and we recommend flashlights and jackets for tunnels. The Elroy-Sparta State Bike Trail links with the LaCrosse River Trail in Sparta.

The '400' State Trail is often called the most scenic trail in the Wisconsin State Trail System. It's named for the Chicago & Northwestern passenger train that
traveled the 400 miles from Chicago to Minneapolis in 400 minutes. The 22 miles of smooth, hard-packed limestone parallels or crosses the Baraboo River the entire length between Elroy and Reedsburg. A recent addition to the trail links Hillsboro to the south. The Juneau County Omaha Bike Trail is 12.5 miles of seal-coated trail owned and maintained by Juneau County and has a separate trail fee. It also follows an abandoned Chicago & Northwestern Railroad bed all the way to Camp Douglas and opened in the spring of 1992. The Omaha Trail is the most peaceful and secluded of our trails. For more information on these trails, as well as trail maps you can download, visit our website at www. www.juneaucounty.com For additional information, please visit www.elroy-sparta-trail.com or www.400statetrail.org

The ‘400’ Trail heads east out of Elroy following the Baraboo River to Reedsburg, some 22 miles away. At Union Center, the ‘400’ Trail branches off as the Hillsboro State Trail. Juneau County Parks Juneau County offers a wealth of outdoor recreational areas administered by federal, state, county, and local agencies. In fact, we have a total of 68 parks about 75,000 acres in all. Half the county is forested. With our waysides, recreational trails, and 57 lakes and public boat accesses, it’s easy to see why our ‘backyard’ is a recreational paradise. Castle Rock Park has over 300 campsites on 160 acres. It is located on Highway G about seven miles from Mauston, Wisconsin, on beautiful Castle Rock Lake which covers 16,000 acres. Amenities at the park include spots for tents, trailers and RV’s, showers, flush toilets, water, playgrounds, picnic tables, swimming (supervised beach), a park officer, boating and boat access, fishing, water skiing, canoeing, grills, shelter, electricity and concessions. Camping reservations for Castle Rock Park can be made at 608-847-9389 or 608-847-7089. Maps of Castle Rock and Wilderness Campgrounds can be viewed at www. juneaucounty.com/tourism. asp, in the Parks & Recreation Areas section. You can see the layout and amenities, then call to make your reservation for the camping site you would like. Wilderness Park is over 80 acres and has over 100 campsites for tents and trailers. Electricity, toilets, boating, swimming, fishing, playground, picnic tables, concessions, grills, firewood, water, group camping, shelter, scenic trails, boat ramp, water skiing and showers are available.

Campground Directory Please purchase all firewood locally.
Firewood can harbor many different kinds of invasive pests and diseases that are harmful to Wisconsin’s trees in both forest and urban settings. Gypsy moth, oak wilt, and emerald ash borer hitchhike on firewood, to name just a few, making their way easily into previously unaffected, healthy areas. This poses a serious threat to trees throughout the state. Although it is still legal to move firewood in certain areas, it is almost always a bad idea to do so. Moving firewood can put the trees at your destination at risk.

Welcome To Necedah! Welcome to Necedah National Wildlife Refuge’s self-guided auto tour. The 20 mile drive will take you through a portion of the refuge that is rich in natural history. Please plan for at least 3 hours on the tour route. The numbered sign posts or “stations” along the road refer to descriptions on the following two pages. Bird and mammals are plentiful, but their presence can only be detected by a keen ear or eye. Stop often and pause to look and listen. Animals are most active during early morning or evening hours. Binoculars and bird books are available for loan at the Visitor Center. We ask that you return these items by 3:30 p.m.
See map guide descriptions on pages 50 & 51

Welcome To Necedah! Station 1: Visitor Center - Headquarters Building
1 Necedah National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) is just
one of more than 550 National Wildlife Refuges under the Department of the Interior in the United States. Necedah NWR is 44,000-acres. It was established in 1939 as a resting and feeding area for birds and other wildlife. The National Wildlife Refuge System is made up of more than 93 million acres. There is a refuge in every state. Eight right here in Wisconsin are managed for wildlife first and where appropriate visitors can enjoy wildlife viewing, photography, hiking, hunting, fishing and educational or interpretive programs. Take some time to explore the visitor center exhibits. Lifelike displays and interactive exhibits give visitors a sampling of life on the refuge. We also offer a short introductory refuge video and two trails to immerse yourself into the refuge.
2 Station 2: Observation Deck and Trail
This stop offers great bird watching and a spectacular view of Rynearson Pool #1. The tower is roughly 100 yards from the parking lot and offers a ground platform as well as steps leading up to the two platforms of the tower. Keep your eyes peeled along the shoreline for larger mammals such as deer or bears. The Tower Trail offers 3/4 of a mile of hiking that takes visitors east to backwater bay and back again to the parking lot. This trail offers birders a chance to find some of the canopy species the refuge hosts such as scarlet tanagers, red-headed woodpeckers and cedar waxwings. Station 3: Timber Management
3 You may have noticed large patches of forest that
have been selectively cut or thinned. Choosing which trees to cut creates openings in the woods where native wildlife foods can grow. This method also encourages the growth of trees that remain. Oak and pine were cut from this area on your right, leaving behind a savanna habitat producing foods for many animals such as wild turkey, ruffed grouse, squirrels, deer and woodpeckers. Station 4: Watch This Spot
4 Necedah National Wildlife Refuge is located in an
area known to early settlers as the Great Central Wisconsin Swamp, formerly covered by Glacial Lake Wisconsin. Original land surveyors in 1853 recorded the land as “level, wet, and mostly swampy” with open stands of “small scattered jack pine and tamarack.” Notable exceptions to this were the sand ridges in the area. These were described as “rolling with low ridges.” Glacial meltwaters left ridges of welldrained sand rising gently out of the surrounding wetlands, forming a patchwork of open vistas, forest and savanna. Station 5: Sedge Meadow
5 On both sides of the road is a wetland meadow
typical of the Necedah area. Because the sedge plants are so thick and the water so acid, these wetland meadows are not very attractive to waterfowl. However, birds such as great blue herons, alder flycatchers and sandhill cranes might be seen in the openings. Sedge Meadows are the only old growth habitat in the Refuge and have remained virtually undisturbed for 11,000 years. Sedge meadow soils consists mostly of peat soil, which holds in moisture, and are generally open spaces with different species of grasses. Sedge meadows on
50
Necedah National Wildlife Refuge house six different species of birds: Sedge Wrens, Blue Winged Warblers, Gold Winged Warblers, Henslow’s Sparrows, LaConte’s Sparrows and Bobolinks. These six species are listed on the National Audobon Society’s Watch List and the US Fish and Wildlife Service Region 3 Conservation Priority List. Station 6: Land of Yellow Water
6 The name “Necedah” (pronounced nah-see-dah)
comes from the Ho Chunk people meaning “land of the yellow waters”. The yellow tint comes from high mineral content in the water. This stop illustrates many ditches that were once used to drain water from the land. Today the ditches and water control structures are used to create water impoundments to restore hydrology to the landscape. This also allows biologists the ability to mimic natural, seasonal changes. Beaver are active in many of these streams; mink and otter might also be seen from the bridges.
7 Station 7: Pine Plantation
White and red pines were planted by the Civilian Conservation Corps around 1938. They were planted for timber production and to prevent soil erosion. Wild turkeys and woodland hawks like Sharp-shinned and Cooper’s Hawks are sometimes seen among the pines.
8 Station 8: Managing Water for Wildlife
The control structure you see before you across Sprague-Mather Road is used to control the water level in Sprague Pool. Refuge pools are lowered in late spring to encourage the growth of waterfowl loving plants such as millet, smartweed, beggar ticket and spikerush. In early fall these pools are reflooded to provide feeding areas for geese, ducks, swans, whooping and sandhill cranes.
9 Station 9: Goose and Sprague Pools
Open water areas are favorite places for diving ducks. These ducks are usually seen during fall migration. Shallow water provides food for dabbling ducks. Other waterfowl include cormorants, trumpeter swans, coots, grebes and Canada geese. Along the edges you may see whooping cranes, bald eagles and shorebirds. Check out the Lupine Loop Trail ahead!
10 Station 10: Clear-Cutting for Wildlife
The area to your left once looked like the area to your right four years ago. Trees were removed to create an opening for native grasses, berries and other ground cover plants to grow. Carefully planned clear-cutting creates good feeding areas for many kinds of animals. Encroaching oak sprouts are controlled with prescribed fire or by mechanical means such as mowing. Station 11: Break for Wildlife
11 The shallow ponds and wetlands on both sides of
the road are very important for the survival of many kinds of birds. If you could scoop up a cupful of this water, you would discover some of the thousands of small aquatic insects that live here. These insects provide large quantities of protein, which is essential to nesting ducks, birds, turtles, frogs, dragonflies and others. Watch the road as wildlife of any size may be crossing ahead.
Welcome To Necedah! Station 12: Diversity of Grasses The scene to your left may have looked like this 200 years ago. There were only a few trees and no roads. As far as you could see there was open prairie, miles and miles of swaying grass interrupted only by lowland sedge meadows and islands of red and white pine along the Little Yellow River. The vast expanses of prairie are gone, but the grasses still exist such as big bluestem, Indian grass and switch grass. These grasses can grow to heights of six feet and be found growing near the road. Other grasses, which tend to grown shorter and in drier soils, include June grass and little bluestem.

13 Station 13: Boghaunter Trails
The trail system through the gate on your left consists of two loops: the Meadow Beauty Loop (0.6 miles) and the Tamarack Loop (3.6 miles). Both mowed trails offer opportunities to see shorebirds, whooping cranes, savanna and chipping sparrows, eastern kingbirds, turkey and the endangered ringed boghaunter dragonfly. An observation photo blind was recently built and installed by an Eagle Scout on this trail and is located on the Northwest side of the trail near the Wildlife Viewing Area.
Station 14: Wildlife Comes First Just like people, wildlife species have needs that must be met if they are to survive and reproduce. Food, water, shelter and living space are the most important requirements for any species. The mission of the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge is “Wildlife Comes First.” We manage the land to provide quality habitat for wildlife and an quality outdoor experience for visitors.

Join The Fun! ATV/UTV riding is a great family experience and Juneau County has miles and miles of routes to explore traversing 21 municipalities. Each municipality has its own governance over ridership. It is important for visitors to know the designated roads, speed limits, age limits, time of day and dates open. The best way to stay up-to-date and ride legally is to ride with someone who knows the area – like an ATV club member. You can join any one of our clubs and experience a fun-filled, rewarding ride.
