JUNEAU COUNTY ANCIENT ARTIFACTS

ative Americans left an indelible mark on south-central Wisconsin and many dedicated Ho-Chunk are still working hard today to preserve that legacy. Deanna Laufenberg, New Lisbon Library Director, received a donation from the Harry Mortensen family that took years to collect that is several thousands of years old. During the 1960s, Mortensen collected more than 12,000 Native American artifacts, dating from 500-1200 A.D. With more than 4,000 pieces — all found in Juneau County — it’s one of the largest personal collections in the state. Mortensen’s goal was to keep his vast collection in Juneau County and give future generations the opportunity to enjoy artifacts from a time when Wisconsin

looked very different from the state we know today. The New Lisbon library also received arrowheads and other artifacts from Roger Mortensen (no relation). Some of Harry Mortensen’s collection is more than 10,000 years old. One of the most unique items among the artifacts is a fragment of melted sand, hardened after a lighting strike and preserved for centuries. The library isn’t the only place in New Lisbon to find ancient native history. New Lisbon Indian Mounds Park, also known as Gee’s Slough Group, is located on Indian Mounds Road, a few miles south of New Lisbon on Highway 12 and 16. The park features several rolling burial mounds and the sacred native landmark was placed on

the National Register of Historic Places in the 1970s. The Town of Armenia also features several effigy mounds, along with Mauston and several other spots in south central Wisconsin. Natives of Juneau County left their mark in other ways, too. Near Hustler, ancient petroglyphs are etched into the stone along Twin Bluffs and the bluff at the mouth of the Lemonweir River. The pictorial etchings (one resembles a thunderbird) are believed to have been carved by the Winnebago HoChunk tribe between 100 B.C. to 1650 A.D. Despite many natives being driven away from the local area, their impact remains. Their names and culture can be found in almost any direction one looks.

AREA ATTRACTIONS ■ The Boorman House

This 1876 Victorian mansion was built by Benjamin C. Boorman, a native of England. The Boorman House is now the home of the Juneau County Historical Society and showcases extensive collections of artifacts, records and research materials. Dr. McIntosh’s medical office building is also preserved at the site and a building housing agricultural implements, wagons and workshops was recently completed. The Boorman House is open on weekends from Memorial Day to Labor Day and hosts a special Christmas Open House beginning around Thanksgiving. The house is listed on the National Register of Historical Places. The Boorman House is located at 211 N. Union St., Mauston WI 53948. 608-847-4142

■ Buckley Bridge and Mill Drive out of New Lisbon on Hwy M past Kennedy County Park and you’ll cross the Lemonweir River over the Buckley Bridge. The mill was built in 1850 and only its rock foundations can be seen today. 608-562-5213

■ Cranberry Creek Archaeological District

This site contains effigy mounds of the Woodland Culture People dating from 499 B.C. to 1499 A.D. The Woodland Culture People were the ancestors of the Ho-Chunk. This 675 acre site is home to one of the largest and best preserved mound complexes in the upper Midwest. The southern cluster contains bear and panther mounds and a fifty-foot long bird effigy with a wingspan of 125 feet! Directions: From Necedah, go north 10 miles on Cty. G to its junction with Cty. F and 7th Street. Park in the southwest corner of the intersection and walk west along 7th Street into the site. The best mounds are located east of Cranberry Creek, north of the drainage ditch and south of 7th Street.

■ The Elroy Historical Society Museum

This quaint museum in downtown Elroy steps into the city’s past when it was a bustling railroad town. Photographs and memorabilia from that bygone era includes a working model railroad for the young at heart. The museum is open from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm on weekends from May 1 to September 30. 608-462-2400 elroy.com

■ Gee’s Slough Effigy Mounds

The Woodland Culture people, ancestors of the Ho-Chunk, lived throughout this area from 499 B.C. to around 1500 A.D. Indian Mounds Park, just south of New Lisbon is the site of several effigy mounds including a rare flex-legged running panther. The park also includes a linear mound and several round or oval burial mounds that were used by the tribal nobility. The park is located on Indian Mound Road south of New Lisbon off Hwys 12 & 16 and is maintained by the New Lisbon Lions Club. ■ Harry A. Mortensen Collection

An impressive collection of artifacts from the Woodland Culture people, the collection represents the lifetime achievement of Harry A. Mortensen, a New Lisbon native. ■ Juneau County Courthouse

Originally built in 1925, the Juneau County Courthouse, with its marbled floors and richly paneled courtrooms, is listed on the National Register of Historical Places. ■ Marian Shrine

Over 50 years ago, a local farm woman claimed to have a vision of the Virgin Mary at this site in Necedah. The followers of this group have built 14 grottoes to depict saints and events in the life of the Holy Family. ■ Mauston Dam

This dam, built in 1842, powered a saw mill owned by M. M. Maughs. The lake formed behind the dam is Lake Decorah, named after a prominent Ho-Chunk family in the area. The mill was destroyed in a fire in 1864 and later rebuilt in another location by Benjamin Boorman. 608-847-4142

■ New Lisbon Civil War Memorial

A statue erected by the GAR in 1897 stands in Heritage Park on Adams St in New Lisbon. The statue and an authentic Civil War cannon honor the dead from the War Between the States. Also in the park is a restored horse trough that once sat at Adams and Bridge St. in the center of town. 608-562-5213

■ Sprague Bridge

This bridge spanning the Yellow River southeast of Finley, WI in northern Juneau County has been listed on the National Register of Historical Places since 1995. ■ Wisconsin National Guard Museum

This fully restored 1896 log lodge features exhibits including uniforms, weapons and equipment, terrain maps and dioramas of famous battles. Find Your Favorite Fishing Spot Juneau County has so much to offer the sportsman! Maybe catching that big elusive fish is what you enjoy, no matter which type, because you’ll find them all right here! Fishing is a great activity to enjoy with your family and friends that can be done at any age. It’s easy to learn how to fish, it just takes a little time and practice. Try your luck fishing at the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge which includes Northern pike and bullheads which inhabit refuge waters, as well as, black crappies, bluegills, and sunfish. Public Swimming Beaches There are plenty of places to swim on Castle Rock Lake because the lake is mostly a sand bottom and has plenty of spots along the shoreline that are about 3 to 5 feet deep. Buckhorn State Park which is open to the Public has about 10 miles of frontage. If you are looking for a nice sandy beach open to the Public for swimming there are two Castle Rock County Parks, one in Adams County and the other in Juneau County, WI. These two waterfront parks have lifeguards on staff part of the time.

Get Out and Go Canoeing The world of canoeing is jam-packed with new skills to learn and adventures to be had, making it a great sport. One of the best ways to get your kids canoeing is to head out on a family paddle and if you want to keep an eye on young children, sharing a boat can be the perfect solution. A 16-foot canoe is big enough for two adults, two small kids, a dog and a picnic.

Lake Petenwell is the second largest body of water in Wisconsin. This 431 acre park is on a beautiful lake with a designated swimming area, boat launch/harbor of refuge, playground equipment and hiking trails, heated showers and restroom facilities. Castle Rock County Park is open year-round. This 141 acre park is on the fourth largest body of water in Wisconsin. The park also includes a designated swimming area, boat launch, game room, playground equipment, heated showers and restroom facilities. Concessions and firewood available.

The most important consideration is to choose a craft that allows your youngsters to participate in the paddling but you can also pilot on your own. Basic paddling strokes engage muscles you don’t generally use, so it’s worth practicing somewhere before allowing the kids onboard. Canoeing is also a great couple sport. What could be more romantic than canoeing down a slow moving river or gliding atop a mirror-still lake? With the chirping of the birds, the quiet splash of your oars and the conversation, canoeing can be a great way to reconnect with your partner while enjoying all the beauty that nature has around you.

Kayaking Adventures One of the best things about kayaking is that it’s a healthy and fun activity that you can do alone or share with your whole family. Not only is it a fun physical activity where everyone can expend excess energy, but it’s also a wonderful way to connect with the nature. It can be a welcome outdoor activity that allows all members of the family to connect with each other and with nature. Kayaking doesn’t require a lot of strength which makes it the perfect activity for family members of all ages. Not only are sit-ontops great for paddling around the lake, but they also make really fun platforms from which to jump into the water and swim (always remembering to never dive, but to jump in feet first). They’re easy to get back on after a swim and they aren’t restrictive which will make children feel at ease.

he Necedah National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center is a MUST SEE when coming to the refuge, especially if it’s your first time! The Visitor Center opened in 2011 and is fully equipped with everything you need for an enjoyable and educational visit to the refuge. Hands-on minds-on exhibits, naturalist led programs, and great viewing areas await our guests. Visitor Center staff can assist you with current wildlife sightings, trail conditions and refuge information before exploring the 44,000 acres of refuge. You can also sign out binoculars, bird books, or explorer backpacks from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm daily and be sure to check out the Karner Korner Nature Store. NECEDAH NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

Observation Tower Trail The Observation Tower Trail is 0.8 miles and winds through the refuge’s forested habitats adjacent to the shore of Rynearson Pool #1. This trail offers a two story observation tower with a viewing scope as well as a small viewing blind at the far-east end. Sunrise at the tower offers amazing and unique sights and sounds. Spend some time here and watch as wading birds emerge from grasses and sedges. Ducks and other waterfowl love dabbling in the shallow waters of the pool and loafing on the white sandbars during the summer months. Along the trail be on the lookout for distinct black bear tracks, eye-catching scarlet tanagers, and badger burrows! The viewing blind offers cover for viewing and photographing wildlife in the backwater areas of the pool.

Boghaunter Trail Looking for an adventure? Boghaunter Trail System offers the longest trails on the refuge with a combined total of over 6 miles of trails to explore. Trail loops wind through the different habitats of the refuge while showcasing Necedah’s amazing species diversity. The trail is named for the endangered Ringed-boghaunter dragonfly occasionally found here. Hikers should expect to find something of interest on at least one of these trails! Combined, Meadow Beauty and Boardwalk Loop are over 2.5 miles long. The Tamarack Loop stretches over 3.6 miles and offers a slightly more challenging trail with some hills and forest in addition to wetland and prairie vistas. Watch for aerial wildlife such as dragonflies and damselflies or for larger mammals such as deer, bear, wolves and bobcat.

Muskrat Loop only takes 10 minutes to stroll around. Stop at the viewing scopes to scan the wetland for whooping cranes and trumpeter swans. Looking for more? Hike the Karner Loop which winds through forest and savanna along with Rynearson Pool #2. The Visitor Center has outdoor bathrooms that are open from dawn to dusk on the West side of the building.

Are you in search of the endangered Karner blue butterfly? Hike the 0.8 mile Lupine Loop in late May and late July to watch for this dimed size beauty! The remainder of the year, this trail offers dynamic views of the backwater areas of Goose Pool. Be sure to check out the photo blind nestled along the shore line to look for both birds and other wildlife. Who knows what you will find!

If you are looking for a leisurely stroll through the woods, WhiteTail Loop is definitely your style! Explore one of Necedah’s forests and the wildlife that inhabits it by walking this 1.7 mile trail. This trail is famous for wildlife viewing and a quiet peek into the upland forested areas of our 44,000 acre landscape. This dynamic trail offers opportunities for both serenity and exciting wildlife photography!

Harvey’s Pond Trail is a 0.7 mile, mowed trail that winds between marshy lowlands and forested upland habitats. Whether it’s from the bank of the pond or the pier, fishing Harvey’s Pond is a great way to enjoy the refuge. Species you may encounter can include Northern pike, largemouth bass, pumpkinseed, bluegill, yellow perch, crappie and brown bullhead. This spot is the most popular fishing area on the refuge! Buckhorn Trails Central Sands Nature Trail (1.5 miles)—Ten interpretive signs have been placed along the way to help you learn about this sandy area. Turkey Hollow Trail (1.5 mile) runs into the Central Sands Nature Trail. It also will take you to backpack sites 4-7 and 13-15. Partridge Trail (1 mile) begins and ends at the Hunter Parking Lot A near the T intersection. It also connects to the Turkey Hollow Trail and winds through an oak woods. Watch for pileated and red-headed woodpeckers; they’re quite a sight. This trail will take you to backpack sites 17-19. Oak Barrens Nature Trail (1.5 mile) leads you through oak and pine barrens and prairie areas. A short portion is paved and accessible. Turtle Trail (.4 mile) leads to the kids’ fishing pond. A fishing pier built by area Eagle Scouts is there, and the Friends of Buckhorn stocked the pond with bluegills, catfish, and bass. Canoe Interpretive Trail (1.5 mile)—Bring your canoe or kayak or rent one at the park and explore the canoe interpretive trail. Ten numbered posts along the shoreline mark points of interest. At the canoe launch or office, pick up a brochure describing these sites. The 1.5-mile trail usually requires 60-90 minutes, but plan for more time. Buckhorn Campground Trail (.53 mile)— A crushed rock trail for walking or biking leads from the campground towards the day use area.

Buckhorn State Park is a paradise for water enthusiasts, hunters, hikers, location campers and nature lovers. The park and two adjacent state wildlife areas cover more than 8,000-acres on a peninsula in the Castle Rock Flowage of the Wisconsin River and along the connecting Yellow River. Family and group campsites, unique cart-in camping, a cabin for people with disabilities, canoe trail and an accessible fishing pier, are all available at Buckhorn State Park. The park is open year-round from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Vehicle admission sticker is required. Camping fees for the Wisconsin State Park System. Hunting and fishing licenses apply. Canoe and kayak rentals are available in season from the Friends of Buckhorn State Park. Contact the park office for more information. The Friends of Buckhorn State Park work on numerous park projects and events throughout the year, including the annual photography contest, candlelight hikes and summer naturalist programs. JUNEAU COUNTY PARKS Juneau County Parks Juneau County offers a wealth of outdoor recreational areas administered by federal, state, county, and local agencies. In fact, we have a total of 68 parks - about 75,000 acres in all. Half the county is forested. With our waysides, recreational trails, and 57 lakes and public boat accesses, it’s easy to see why our ‘backyard’ is a recreational paradise. Wilderness Park is over 80 acres and has over 100 campsites for tents and trailers. Electricity, toilets, boating, swimming, fishing, playground, picnic tables, concessions, grills, firewood, water, group camping, shelter, scenic trails, boat ramp, water skiing and showers are available. Castle Rock Park has over 300 campsites on 160 acres. It is located on Highway G about seven miles from Mauston, Wisconsin, on beautiful Castle Rock Lake which covers 16,000 acres. Amenities at the park include spots for tents, trailers and RV’s, showers, flush toilets, water, playgrounds, picnic tables, swimming (supervised beach), a park officer, boating and boat access, fishing, water skiing, canoeing, grills, shelter, electricity and concessions. BIKE TRAILS Elroy is the hub of the three major bike trails in Juneau County. The Omaha Trail is a 12.5 mile trail from Elroy to Camp Douglas along the old Chicago & Northwestern railbed. The Elroy-Sparta Trail heads west and north to Sparta along 32 miles of hard-packed, limestone trail. The trail features three tunnels along its route. The ‘400’ Trail heads east out of Elroy following the Baraboo River to Reedsburg, some 22 miles away. At Union Center, the ‘400’ Trail branches off as the Hillsboro State Trail. Elroy is located on Hwys 71, 80 & 82 in southwestern Juneau County. Information on the trails can be found by calling the Commons Trails Shop at 608-462-2410.

BIKE TRAILS

he many bike trails of Juneau County are just waiting for your visit. They all begin (or end) in Elroy WI, located on Hwys 80-82 in southwestern Juneau County. The Elroy-Sparta State Bike Trail is the “Granddaddy of All Trails.“ It was the very first Rails to Trails Conversion in the United States in 1965. The hard-packed limestone trail covers 32 miles of an abandoned Chicago & Northwestern Railroad bed and has no more than a 3% grade at any point. The trail passes through three tunnels as it makes its way toward Sparta and we recommend flashlights and jackets for tunnels. The ElroySparta State Bike Trail links with the LaCrosse River Trail in Sparta. The '400' State Trail is often called the most scenic trail in the Wisconsin State Trail System. It's named for the Chicago & Northwestern passenger train that traveled the 400 miles from Chicago to Minneapolis in 400 minutes. The 22 miles of smooth, hard-packed limestone parallels or crosses the Baraboo River the entire length between Elroy and Reedsburg. A recent addition to the trail links Hillsboro to the south.

The Juneau County Omaha Bike Trail is 12.5 miles of seal-coated trail owned and maintained by Juneau County and has a separate trail fee. It also follows an abandoned Chicago & Northwestern Railroad bed all the way to Camp Douglas and opened in the spring of 1992. The Omaha Trail is the most peaceful and secluded of our trails. JUNEAU COUNTY LAKES

The Lakes The Lakes region of Juneau and Adams counties has something for everyone. Both Castle Rock and Petenwell Lakes are created by power dams on the Wisconsin River. The river forms the eastern boundary of the county. Castle Rock Lake is the fourth largest inland lake in Wisconsin and offers plenty of fishing, camping and boating. Buckhorn State Park, Castle Rock Park and Germantown Park offer visitors plenty of space to picnic and enjoy the view. Many campsites and resorts surround the lake and boat launches are plentiful. Whether your thing is jet skiing or sailing, there's plenty of big water for you to enjoy for a day, a week or a lifetime. Petenwell Lake is the second largest inland lake in Wisconsin, and is well known for its great fishing. Walleyes, northern pike, muskies and pan fish are plentiful and there are plenty of public boat launches available. The lake is 23,000+ acres over a 36 sq. mile area. It was created in 1948 by damming the Wisconsin River near Necedah. Its maximum depth is over 40' and is well-known for its excellent fishing and waterfowling. American eagles winter at the dam and can be observed daily during the season. Camping at Wilderness Park on Petenwell Lake ranges from full hookup to primitive and the scenery is great.

Castle Rock

Lemonweir River From the 37th Street landing 1000 feet west where County Hwy M crosses the Lemonweir about 3 1/2 miles north of New Lisbon going downstream is a relative easy paddle for all levels of paddlers. For a shorter about 2-hour paddle to Riverside Park put-in at the Outdoors Forever landing reached from Hwy 12/16 about 1.5 miles West of Mauston. Watch for the boat landing sign by the bridge. Kennedy Park about 2 miles downstream has a boat landing, camping, outhouses and pump well water. Another 3 miles downstream is New Lisbon Riverside Park which has camping, indoor warm showers, toilets, electric hook ups and a boat launch site. From below the New Lisbon dam to Mauston is a 7 to 8 hour paddle for more experienced boaters because of the numerous trees in the river. After going around the bluff there is a boat landing river right on Lake Decorah. Further downstream is Riverside Park which has a covered picnic shelter, flush toilets and boat landing. From below the Mauston Dam down to 19th Street Lemonweir Mills is about a 3 hour paddle suitable for all levels of paddlers. Yellow River For a wilderness experience, paddle from Hwy F east of Finley to the 9th Street Bridge east of Sprague. Best if the Necedah River Gauge reads over 10 feet. From Necedah to the Castle Rock Flowage the put-in is at the 9th Street landing just off Hwy 80 on the south side of Necedah. The paddle to Castle Rock Flowage takes about 4-5 hours. No rapids but plenty of fallen trees for obstacles. The single vertical poles highline are about halfway to the Crappie Point takeout. When the river splits take river left channel. Then in the Yellow River Wildlife area Bald Eagles are often seen. When you see the Buckhorn Bridge paddle to the West Shore (river right) for Crappie Point landing. Juneau County's natural beauty brings year round pleasure to area residents and visitors alike. Geographical diversity is a hallmark of Juneau County. From sand country to hill country, from northern forests to unglaciated “driftless areas,” we have beautiful and scenic landscapes. Most of what is today’s Juneau County was carved out of the sandstone bedrock during the last North American Glacial Period some 18,000 years ago. For a long time, Juneau County was covered by the glacial Lake Wisconsin. The lake (up to 150’ deep) stretched over 1,800 sq. miles from Tomah to the west and up to Stevens Point in the north. A huge natural dam formed by rock, earth and sand burst some 14,000 years ago. After three days it took to drain the lake, the runoff created a new course for the Wisconsin River, carved out the Wisconsin Dells and moved

south toward Baraboo to create Devil’s Lake. The rocky outcroppings, called buttes or bluffs, you see throughout the central and northern part of the county are really the tops of islands that dotted the surface of glacial Lake Wisconsin. If you’re ambitious, climbing to the top of one of these ‘islands’ shows you the outline of the old lake. The low and sandy prairies you see are the old lakebed. Much of the southern part of the county escaped the destructive force of the last glacial period and is part of the “driftless” region of Wisconsin. JUNEAU COUNTY HISTORY

Juneau County was founded on October 13, 1856 from Adams County. The county was named in honor of Solomon Juneau (1793-1856), founder of what would become Milwaukee.

ur heritage adventure starts with a look backwards in time at the people and places of Juneau County. The first known inhabitants of the area were the people of the Woodland Culture. These semi-nomadic people hunted, gathered and farmed this area after the draining of glacial Lake Wisconsin some 14,000 years ago. These early people raised corn, squash and beans and harvested wild blueberries, cranberries and other wild fruit for use during their winter camps. Others harvested wild rice, buffalo, deer, moose and other wild game. The rivers of Juneau County were the highways that allowed exploration. Rivers such as the Wisconsin, the Lemonweir, the Yellow and the Baraboo were used to harvest the abundant natural resources of the county and early settlements along those rivers included Mauston, New Lisbon, Necedah, Elroy and Wonewoc. After the period of early exploration, trading posts and sawmills

sprang up to harvest the abundant pine timber that covered the county. Unwise harvesting practices soon exhausted these resources and as the land was stripped, agriculture took hold. Crops of summer wheat, tobacco, corn, sphagnum moss, hops, grains and cranberries were harvested, sold and traded by early farmers who survived brutal winters and the backbreaking task of eking a living out of the land. Much of the land, especially in the northern part of the county, was unsuitable for agriculture and the sandy, light soil of the Lemonweir River Valley blew away during the spring. Even with these long odds, agriculture became the largest industry in the county and today still holds that position. The mix is different now than it was back then. Dairy, hogs and sheep are more prevalent and corn, soybeans and wheat are the main crops. With the coming of the railroads in the

mid-1800s, Juneau County’s geographical location midway between Chicago and Minneapolis made it an important part of rail history. The City of Elroy was on the main line of the Chicago & Northwestern Railway and Mauston, New Lisbon and Camp Douglas were regular stops on the old Milwaukee Road. The present Interstate system (I90-94) roughly parallels the Milwaukee Road as it cuts diagonally across the county. Necedah was served by the Chicago & Northwestern and served as an important rail point for access to northern and central Wisconsin. At one time, passenger service was available at many of these stops to connect Juneau County residents with the world. The Chicago & Northwestern Railroad beds around Elroy, Camp Douglas, Union Center and Wonewoc have been converted into bike trails including the Elroy-Sparta State Trail, the Omaha Trail and the ‘400’ Trail.
