Area Attractions ■ The Boorman House This 1876 Victorian mansion was built by Benjamin C. Boorman, a native of England. The Boorman House is now the home of the Juneau County Historical Society and showcases extensive collections of artifacts, records and research materials. Dr. McIntosh’s medical office building is also preserved at the site and a building housing agricultural implements, wagons and workshops was recently completed. The Boorman House is open on weekends from Memorial Day to Labor Day and hosts a special Christmas Open House beginning around Thanksgiving. The house is listed on the National Register of Historical Places. The Boorman House is located at 211 N. Union St., Mauston WI 53948. 608-847-4142
■ Buckley Bridge and Mill Drive out of New Lisbon on Hwy M past Kennedy County Park and you’ll cross the Lemonweir River over the Buckley Bridge. The mill was built in 1850 and only its rock foundations can be seen today. 608-562-5213
■ Cranberry Creek Archaeological District This site contains effigy mounds of the Woodland Culture People dating from 499 B.C. to 1499 A.D. The Woodland Culture People were the ancestors of the Ho-Chunk. This 675 acre site is home to one of the largest and best preserved mound complexes in the upper Midwest. The southern cluster contains bear and panther mounds and a fifty-foot long bird effigy with a wingspan of 125 feet! Directions: From Necedah, go north 10 miles on Cty. G to its junction with Cty. F and 7th Street. Park in the southwest corner of the intersection and walk west along 7th Street into the site. The best mounds are located east of Cranberry Creek, north of the drainage ditch and south of 7th Street.
■ The Elroy Historical Society Museum This quaint museum in downtown Elroy steps into the city’s past when it was a bustling railroad town. Photographs and memorabilia from that bygone era includes a working model railroad for the young at heart. The museum is open from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm on weekends from May 1 to September 30. 608-462-2400 elroy.com
■ Gee’s Slough Effigy Mounds The Woodland Culture people, ancestors of the Ho-Chunk, lived throughout this area from 499 B.C. to around 1500 A.D. Indian Mounds Park, just south of New Lisbon is the site of several effigy mounds including a rare flex-legged running panther. The park also includes a linear mound and several round or oval burial mounds that were used by the tribal nobility. The park is located on Indian Mound Road south of New Lisbon off Hwys 12 & 16 and is maintained by the New Lisbon Lions Club. ■ Harry A. Mortensen Collection
An impressive collection of artifacts from the Woodland Culture people, the collection represents the lifetime achievement of Harry A. Mortensen, a New Lisbon native. A portion of the collection can also be seen at Raabe’s Pharmacy on Adams St. in New Lisbon. The Mortensen Collection is listed on the National Register of Historical Places. Harry A. ■ Juneau County Courthouse Originally built in 1925, the Juneau County Courthouse, with its marbled floors and richly paneled courtrooms, is listed on the National Register of Historical Places. It stands on a square in the center of Mauston, the county seat, and hosts many community activities including a farmers market during the summer. Juneau County Courthouse, 220 E. ■ Marian Shrine Over 50 years ago, a local farm woman claimed to have a vision of the Virgin Mary at this site in Necedah. The followers of this group have built 14 grottoes to depict saints and events in the life of the Holy Family. ■ Mauston Dam This dam, built in 1842, powered a saw mill owned by M. M. Maughs. The lake formed behind the dam is Lake Decorah, named after a prominent Ho-Chunk family in the area. The mill was destroyed in a fire in 1864 and later rebuilt in another location by Benjamin Boorman. 608-847-4142
■ New Lisbon Civil War Memorial A statue erected by the GAR in 1897 stands in Heritage Park on Adams St in New Lisbon. The statue and an authentic Civil War cannon honor the dead from the War Between the States. Also in the park is a restored horse trough that once sat at Adams and Bridge St. in the center of town. 608-562-5213
■ Sprague Bridge This bridge spanning the Yellow River southeast of Finley, WI in northern Juneau County has been listed on the National Register of Historical Places since 1995. Built in the early 1900s, the bridge is an excellent example of small bridge construction during that era. North of Necedah off of Hwy. 80 approximately 10 miles. 608-565-2014
■ Wisconsin National Guard Museum This fully restored 1896 log lodge features exhibits including uniforms, weapons and equipment, terrain maps and dioramas of famous battles. Hiking Plan A Hiking Adventure If you’re thirsting for new experiences and would like to discover different parts of the area without spending too much money, why not try hiking. It’s good physical exercise, an excellent way of getting in touch with nature and is sure to satisfy your need of adventure. Hiking is above all a great opportunity to discover forests, lakes, rivers and hillsides while being environmentally responsible. Moreover, it’s a sport which is becoming extremely popular as a physical activity which can be adapted to the individual. Juneau County has such diverse terrain, you can hike through woods, plains, marshes, forests, savannas, quarries, sandy shorelines, hills, bluffs, dells, and other breathtaking natural scenic areas. Juneau County Parks Juneau County offers a wealth of outdoor recreational areas administered by federal, state, county, and local agencies. In fact, we have a total of 68 parks - about 75,000 acres in all. Half the county is forested. With our waysides, recreational trails, and 57 lakes and public boat accesses, it’s easy to see why our ‘backyard’ is a recreational paradise. Wilderness Park is over 80 acres and has over 100 campsites for tents and trailers. Electricity, toilets, boating, swimming, fishing, playground, picnic tables, concessions, grills, firewood, water, group camping, shelter, scenic trails, boat ramp, water skiing and showers are available. Castle Rock Park has over 300 campsites on 160 acres. It is located on Highway G about seven miles from Mauston, Wisconsin, on beautiful Castle Rock Lake which covers 16,000 acres. Buckhorn State Park
Buckhorn State Park is a paradise for water enthusiasts, hunters, hikers, location campers and nature lovers. The park and
two adjacent state wildlife areas cover more than 8,000-acres on a peninsula in the Castle Rock Flowage of the Wisconsin River and along the connecting Yellow River. Family and group campsites, unique cart-in camping, a cabin for people with disabilities, canoe trail and an accessible fishing pier, are all available at Buckhorn State Park. The park is open year-round from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Vehicle admission sticker is required. Camping fees for the Wisconsin State Park System. Hunting and fishing licenses apply. Canoe and kayak rentals are available in season from the Friends of Buckhorn State Park. Contact the park office for more information. The Friends of Buckhorn State Park work on numerous park projects and events throughout the year, including the annual photography contest, candlelight hikes and summer naturalist programs. Necedah National Wildlife Refuge
The Necedah National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center is a MUST SEE when coming to the refuge, especially if it’s your first time! The Visitor Center opened in 2011 and is fully equipped with everything you need for an enjoyable and educational visit to the refuge. Handson minds-on exhibits, naturalist led programs, and great viewing areas await our guests. Visitor Center staff can assist you with current wildlife sightings, trail conditions and refuge information before exploring the 44,000 acres of refuge. You
can also sign out binoculars, bird books, or explorer backpacks from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm daily and be sure to check out the Karner Korner Nature Store. Activities: Hiking, Hunting, Fishing, Wildlife Observation, Nature Photography, Cross-country Skiing, Snowshoeing, Environmental Education and Interpretation. Necedah National Wildlife Refuge Eagles Nest: Enter the NNWR from Hwy 21 by turning onto Headquarters Road (4 miles from intersection of Hwy 21 & 80). At the first body of water on the right, pull off and park. Look for the pole standing up out of the water with a platform on top. Each year in early spring (February/March) a pair of Bald Eagles takes up residence in the nest on this platform. Use the telescope provided to get a closer look! White-Tail Loop Hike: Just a bit further along Headquarters Road is another pull off to the right for this trail head. If you are looking for a leisurely stroll through the woods, White-Tail Loop is definitely your style! Explore one of Necedah’s forests and the wildlife that inhabits it by walking this 1.7 mile trail. This trail is famous for wildlife viewing and a quiet peek into the upland forested areas of our 44,000 acre landscape. This dynamic trail offers opportunities for both serenity and exciting wildlife photography! Visitor Center & Trails: The NNWR Visitor Center is a MUST SEE when coming to the refuge, especially if it’s your first time! Open Monday-Saturday from 9am-4pm (Closed Holidays), it is fully equipped with everything you need for an enjoyable and educational visit, such as hands-on minds-on exhibits, naturalistled programs, and great viewing areas. Staff can alert you to current wildlife sightings or trail conditions. Binoculars, books, snow shoes, and even explorer backpacks can be checked out for the day at no charge. The Muskrat Hiking Trail is a short loop that takes about 10 minutes to stroll around, and is handicap accessible. Stop at the viewing scopes to scan the wetland for Whooping Cranes and Trumpeter Swans. Looking for more? Hike the Karner Loop which winds through forest and savanna along with Rynearson Pool #2. The Visitor Center is equipped with outdoor bathrooms on the West side of the building that are open from dawn to dusk. Suk Cerney Flowage: As you exit the Visitors Center Lot turn right onto Short Cut Road then look for the body of water on your left, Suk Cerney Flowage. Just like people, wildlife species have needs that must be met if they are to survive and reproduce. Water, food, shelter, and living space are the most important requirements for any species. The mission of the NNWR is “Wildlife Comes First”. We manage the land to provide quality habitat for wildlife and a quality outdoor experience for visitors. Boghaunter Trails: Leaving Suk Cerney, stay right and you’ll come to the Boghaunter Trail System which offers the longest trails on the refuge with a combined total of over 6 miles to explore! The trail loops wind through various habitats and demonstrate Necedah’s amazing species diversity. The trail system is named for the endangered Ringedboghaunter dragonfly occasionally found here. Combined, Meadow Beauty Loop and Boardwalk Loop are about 2.5 miles long. The Tamarack Loop stretches over 3.5 miles and offers a slightly more challenging hike with
some hills and forest in addition to wetland and prairie vistas. You’re sure to find something of interest! Watch for aerial wildlife such as dragonflies and damselflies, shorebirds such as whooping cranes, eastern kingbirds, and turkeys, or larger mammals such as deer, bear, wolves, and bobcat. An observation photo blind is located on the Northwest side of the trail near the Wildlife Viewing Area. Great place to use your binoculars or telescope!
down Bewick Road and turn left onto Sprague Mather Road. Just after 7th Avenue turns off to the right, you’ll see the structure used to control the water level in Sprague Pool, a “Low-Headed Dam”. Refuge pools are lowered in late spring to encourage the growth of waterfowl-loving plants such as Millet, Smartweed, Beggar Ticket, and Spikebrush. In early fall these pools are reflooded to provide feeding areas for geese, ducks, swans, Whooping and Sandhill Cranes.
Diversity Of Grasses: Leaving Boghaunter, turn right and continue on. At the T-intersection turn right onto 6th Avenue. The scene to your left may have looked like this 200 years ago. There were only a few trees, no roads, and as far as you could see there was open prairie, miles and miles of swaying grasses interrupted only by lowland sedge meadows and islands or red and white pine along the Little Yellow River. While the vast expanses of prairie are gone, the grasses still exist here including Bluestem Indian Grass and Switch Grass, which can grow to heights of 6 feet. Other grasses here which grow shorter and survive even better in drier soils include June Grass and Little Bluestem Grass.
Sedge Meadow: Travel down 7th Avenue. After the road turns left (becoming Speedway Road), notice the wetland meadows on both sides of you… very typical for the Necedah area. Because the sedge plants are so thick and the water so acidic, these wetland meadows are not very attractive to waterfowl. However, birds such as Great Blue Herons, Alder Flycatchers, and Sandhill Cranes might be seen in the openings. Another great spot to pull out those binoculars for a closer look!
Break For Wildlife: As you come to the next T-intersection (12th Street) notice the shallow ponds and wetlands on both sides of the road. They are very important for the survival of many kinds of birds. If you could scoop up a cup of this water you would discover some of the thousands of small aquatic insects that live there. These insects provide large quantities of protein, which are essential to nesting ducks, birds, turtles, frogs, dragonflies, and others. This is another great spot for birdwatching, so pull out your binoculars. Then watch the road as you turn right onto 12th Street and continue on, because wildlife critters of any size may be crossing! Clear-Cutting For Wildlife: After the road turns left (becoming Bewick Road) look off to your right side. Years ago it looked just like the landscape on your left side. Trees were removed to create an opening for native grasses, berries, and other ground cover plants to grow. Carefully planned clear-cutting creates good feeding areas for many kinds of animals. Encroaching oak sprouts are controlled with prescribed fire or by mechanical means such as mowing. Lupine Loop Trail: Continue driving up Bewick Road, cross 9th Street/ Sprague Mather Road, to the end. Goose Pool is on your left, and Sprague Pool is on your right. These open water areas are favorites among diving ducks, most often seen during fall migration. Other waterfowl commonly seen are cormorants, trumpeter swans, coots, grebes, and Canada Geese. Around the waters edges you’re likely to spot Whooping Cranes, Bald Eagles, and other shore birds. The 0.8 mile Lupine Loop Trail is a lovely hike. Be sure to check out the photo blind nestled along the shoreline. From late May through July you’ll likely see the endangered Karner Blue Butterfly. Managing Water For Wildlife: Drive back
Observation Deck & Trail: Continue to follow Speedway Road as it curves along, merges into 17th Street, and out to Hwy 80. Turn right onto Hwy 80, pass 18th Street, and then turn right onto 19th Street. Take your second left onto 11th Avenue, then right onto 20th Street/ Grand Dike Road. After passing the 9th Avenue turn off, look for Rynearson Pool #1 on your right and the start of the Observation Tower Trail. This 0.8 mile winding hike goes through forested habitats and has a two-story observation tower with a viewing scope (tower is about 100 yards from parking lot), and a small viewing blind at the far-east end. Sunrise at the tower offers amazing and unique sights and sounds. Spend some time here and watch as the wading birds emerge from grasses and sedges. Ducks and other waterfowl love dabbling in the shallow waters of the pool and loafing on the white sand bars during the summer months. Along the trail be on the lookout for distinct black bear tracks, eye-catching scarlet tanagers, and badger burrows! The viewing blind offers cover for watching and photographing wildlife in the backwater areas of the pool. Harvey’s Pond Trail: Leaving the Observation Tower’s parking lot, go back down 20th Street/ Grand Dike Road to 9th Avenue and turn right onto 9th Avenue. Then turn right onto Hwy 21. Just past Headquarters Road but before 7th Avenue, pull off to the right for Harvey’s Pond trail-head. This is a 0.7 mile mowed hiking trail that winds between marshy lowlands and forested upland habitats. Whether it’s from the bank of the pond or the pier, fishing at Harvey’s Pond is another great way to enjoy the refuge. Species you may encounter include Northern Pike, Largemouth Bass, Pumpkinseed, Bluegill, Yellow Perch, Crappie, and Brown Bullhead. This spot is the most popular fishing area on the refuge! Although Harvey’s pond is small in size, it’s huge when it comes to its abundance of wildlife. Look for beavers, river otters, and aquatic insects. It’s a wonderful opportunity to discover the diversity that makes NNWR so special… every season of the year!

Biking The many bike trails of Juneau County are just waiting for your visit. They all begin (or end) in Elroy WI, located on Hwys 80-82 in southwestern Juneau County. The Elroy-Sparta State Bike Trail is the “Granddaddy of All Trails.“ It was the very first Rails to Trails Conversion in the United States in 1965. The hard-packed limestone trail covers 32 miles of an abandoned Chicago & Northwestern Railroad bed and has no more than a 3% grade at any point. The trail passes through three tunnels as it makes its way toward Sparta and we recommend flashlights and jackets for tunnels. The Elroy-Sparta State Bike Trail links with the LaCrosse River Trail in Sparta. The '400' State Trail is often called the most scenic trail in the Wisconsin State Trail System. It's named for the Chicago & Northwestern passenger train that traveled the 400 miles from Chicago to Minneapolis in 400 minutes. The 22 miles of smooth, hard-packed limestone parallels or crosses the Baraboo River the entire length between Elroy and Reedsburg. A recent addition to the trail links Hillsboro to the south.

The Juneau County Omaha Bike Trail is 12.5 miles of sealcoated trail owned and maintained by Juneau County and has a separate trail fee. It also follows an abandoned Chicago & Northwestern Railroad bed all the way to Camp Douglas and opened in the spring of 1992. The Omaha Trail is the most peaceful and secluded of our trails. Biking Elroy is the hub of the three major bike trails in Juneau County. The Omaha Trail is a 12.5 mile trail from Elroy to Camp Douglas along the old Chicago & Northwestern railbed. The Elroy-Sparta Trail heads west and north to Sparta along 32 miles of hard-packed, limestone trail. The trail features three tunnels along its route. The ‘400’ Trail heads east out of Elroy following the Baraboo River to Reedsburg, some 22 miles away. At Union Center, the ‘400’ Trail branches off as the Hillsboro State Trail. Fishing is a great activity to enjoy with your family and friends that can be done at any age. It’s easy to learn how to fish, it just takes a little time and practice. Try your luck fishing at the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge which includes Northern pike and bullheads which inhabit refuge waters, as well as, black crappies, bluegills, and sunfish. Sprague and Goose pools are open to fishing from June 1 through September 15 and December 15 through March 15. Suk Cerney Flowage is open year round, except during waterfowl season. Harvey’s Pond is open year round.

Juneau County Lakes The Lakes The Lakes region of Juneau and Adams counties has something for everyone. Both Castle Rock and Petenwell Lakes are created by power dams on the Wisconsin River. The river forms the eastern boundary of the county. Castle Rock Lake is the fourth largest inland lake in Wisconsin and offers plenty of fishing, camping and boating. Buckhorn State Park, Castle Rock Park and Germantown Park offer visitors plenty of space to picnic and enjoy the view. Many campsites and resorts surround the lake and boat launches are plentiful. Whether your thing is jet skiing or sailing, there's plenty of big water for you to enjoy for a day, a week or a lifetime. Petenwell Lake is the second largest inland lake in Wisconsin, and is well known for its great fishing. Walleyes, northern pike, muskies and pan fish are plentiful and there are plenty of public boat launches available. The lake is 23,000+ acres over a 36 sq. mile area. It was created in 1948 by damming the Wisconsin River near Necedah. Its maximum depth is over 40' and is well-known for its excellent fishing and waterfowling. American eagles winter at the dam and can be observed daily during the season. Camping at Wilderness Park on Petenwell Lake ranges from full hookup to primitive and the scenery is great. Paddle The Four Rivers Baraboo River Paddlers put-in upstream of Highway 33, at Union Center adjacent to the Spring Valley Golf Course. Going downstream to Wonewoc the flat water river follows a snake like scenic path through the “driftless area”. Halfway is a huge rock formation known as the Third Castle, a sheer 150 foot sandstone cliff. The 400 Bike Trail crosses the river at two points. Wonewoc Park has a boat landing, a covered picnic shelter, & toilet and downtown Wonewoc is nearby. Camping is available here, at Baker’s Field and at Wonewoc Legion Park. Canoe/kayak rentals and shuttle services are available in Wonewoc through Beyond Boundaries at (608) 464-7433. Lemonweir River From the 37th Street landing 1000 feet west where County Hwy M crosses the Lemonweir about 3 1/2 miles north of New Lisbon going downstream is a relative easy paddle for all levels of paddlers. Watch for the boat landing sign by the bridge. Kennedy Park about 2 miles downstream has a boat landing, camping, outhouses and pump well water. Another 3 miles downstream is New Lisbon Riverside Park which has camping, indoor warm showers, toilets, electric hook ups and a boat launch site. From below the New Lisbon dam to Mauston is a 7 to 8 hour paddle for more experienced boaters because of the numerous trees in the river. For a shorter about 2-hour paddle to Riverside Park put-in at the Outdoors Forever landing reached from Hwy 12/16 about 1.5 miles West of Mauston. After going around the bluff there is a boat landing river right on Lake Decorah. Further downstream is Riverside Park which has a covered picnic shelter, flush toilets and boat landing. From below the Mauston Dam down to 19th Street. Lemonweir Mills is about a 3 hour paddle suitable for all levels of paddlers. From the 19th Street bridge downstream to the Two Rivers landing near the junction with the Wisconsin River is a long day journey depending upon deadfalls in the river, water levels, etc. For more information check www.juneaucounty.com/canoe-kayak-tube.html.
Wisconsin River Petenwell and Castle Rock Flowage were created by dams on the river. Downstream of the Castle Rock dam to the flowage at River Bay landing is the primary Wisconsin River flatwater paddling section. Castle Rock Resort www.camptherock.com and 4 miles downstream on the west bank (river right) has camping and food/drink weekends. Less than 2 miles farther on the east bank (river left) Point Bluff Resort www.pointbluff.com has kayak/canoe/tube rentals and food and drink service. A couple miles further downstream a short paddle up the Lemonweir River is the Two Rivers boat landing. About 6 miles further down the Wisconsin River is the River Bay boat landing on the west side (river right). Yellow River For a wilderness experience, paddle from Hwy F east of Finley to the 9th Street Bridge east of Sprague. Best if the Necedah River Gauge reads over 10 feet. From Necedah to the Castle Rock Flowage the put-in is at the 9th Street landing just off Hwy 80 on the south side of Necedah. The paddle to Castle Rock Flowage takes about 4-5 hours. No rapids but plenty of fallen trees for obstacles. The single vertical poles highline are about halfway to the Crappie Point takeout. When the river splits take river left channel. Then in the Yellow River Wildlife area Bald Eagles are often seen. When you see the Buckhorn Bridge paddle to the West Shore (river right) for Crappie Point landing. Canoeing, Kayaking & Swimming Get Out and Go Canoeing The world of canoeing is jam-packed with new skills to learn and adventures to be had, making it a great sport. One of the best ways to get your kids canoeing is to head out on a family paddle and if you want to keep an eye on young children, sharing a boat can be the perfect solution. A 16-foot canoe is big enough for two adults, two small kids, a dog and a picnic.

Not only are sit-on-tops great for paddling around the lake, but they also make really fun platforms from which to jump into the water and swim (always remembering to never dive, but to jump in feet first). They’re easy to get back on after a swim and they aren’t restrictive which will make children feel at ease.
Public Swimming Beaches
The most important consideration is to choose a craft that allows your youngsters to participate in the paddling but you can also pilot on your own. Basic paddling strokes engage muscles you don’t generally use, so it’s worth practicing somewhere before allowing the kids onboard.
There are plenty of places to swim on Castle Rock Lake because the lake is mostly a sand bottom and has plenty of spots along the shoreline that are about 3 to 5 feet deep. Buckhorn State Park which is open to the Public has about 10 miles of frontage.
Canoeing is also a great couple sport. What could be more romantic than canoeing down a slow moving river or gliding atop a mirror-still lake? With the chirping of the birds, the quiet splash of your oars and the conversation, canoeing can be a great way to reconnect with your partner while enjoying all the beauty that nature has around you.
If you are looking for a nice sandy beach open to the Public for swimming there are two Castle Rock County Parks, one in Adams County and the other in Juneau County, WI. These two waterfront parks have lifeguards on staff part of the time.
Kayaking Adventures One of the best things about kayaking is that it’s a healthy and fun activity that you can do alone or share with your whole family. Not only is it a fun physical activity where everyone can expend excess energy, but it’s also a wonderful way to connect with the nature. It can be a welcome outdoor activity that allows all members of the family to connect with each other and with nature. Kayaking doesn’t require a lot of strength which makes it

Juneau County is also home to several state parks and county parks, public lands, lakes and rivers… all of which create ideal habitats for our incredibly diverse avian population. The Buckhorn State Park covers 7,000 acres on Castle Rock Lake, and is brimming with wildlife. www.dnr.wi.gov/topic/ parks/name/buckhorn. The Mill Bluff State Park on its 1,300 acres features several nationally protected sandstone bluffs from 80 to 200 feet high. (www.dnr.wi.gov/topic/parks/name/millbluff).

Three bike trails, a theater, library and a museum are just a few of its attractive features. Elroy is best known as the birthplace and home of former Governor Tommy Thompson.

The ‘400’ State Trail, the Elroy-Sparta State Trail and the Juneau County Omaha Trail are the three bicycle trails that meet in Elroy. They are all built on discontinued rail lines that once served the area. They are also used as snowmobile trails in the winter. The Elroy-Sparta trail was the first official ‘Rails to Trails’ bicycle trail in the nation. The Elroy-Sparta trail and the ‘400’ trail join at the Elroy Commons, and the Omaha Trail is connected by way of the new covered bridge.
Hustler | 608-427-6575 Hustler is a quiet little village set in an unglaciated area of Wisconsin. The Omaha Bike Trail runs through the center of town and connects with the ‘400’ State Trail and the ElroySparta State Trail. As you proceed southward to the state trails, you pass through very scenic hillsides and a tunnel. This small town has the distinction of having two churches located in the village, a bowling alley and restaurant, a bed & breakfast, a hair salon, and two friendly taverns. In August, Hustler hosts an annual tractor pull as part of the ‘Hustler Fest” celebration. Visit hustlerfest.com for more information. This event brings in people from many different areas.

Amish country is not far away from Hustler, and the flavor of candy, bakery items, furniture and crafts from the Amish are abundant. Mill Bluff State Park is located just 10 miles north of Hustler. A fact many Juneau County locals wouldn’t in the least find surprising. Often confused for Amish are the Old German Baptist Brethren and Mennonites , two cultures who also live and work within Juneau County communities. Buckhorn State Park is a paradise for water enthusiasts, hunters, hikers, campers and nature lovers. Please purchase all firewood locally. Firewood can harbor many different kinds of invasive pests and diseases that are harmful to Wisconsin’s trees in both forest and urban settings. Gypsy moth, oak wilt, and emerald ash borer hitchhike on firewood, to name just a few, making their way easily into previously unaffected, healthy areas. This poses a serious threat to trees throughout the state. Although it is still legal to move firewood in certain areas, it is almost always a bad idea to do so. Moving firewood can put the trees at your destination at risk.

ATV Trails ATV/UTV Adventures As residents can attest to, Juneau County has some of the most diverse and appealing scenery in the country, from the hills to the forests, the bluffs and the waterways. Each corner of the county has something special to offer. With the expansion of ATV routes, visitors can exit at any of the four Juneau County I90/94 exits, eat and stay locally, and hop on their vehicles to explore the area. ATV/UTV riding is a great family experience and Juneau County has miles and miles of routes to explore traversing 21 municipalities. Each municipality has its own governance over ridership. It is important for visitors to know the designated roads, speed limits, age limits, time of day and dates open. The best way to stay up-to-date and ride legally is to ride with someone who knows the area - like an ATV club member. You can join any of our clubs and experience a fun-filled, rewarding ride. Winter Recreation Enjoy Snowmobiling, Snow Shoeing or Cross Country Skiing in Juneau County The trails in Juneau County are so diverse that you’ll never get bored, from the hills to the valleys, the rivers and woods to the expansive flat-lands, you’ll enjoy every moment. So let the adventure begin!! Snowmobiling in Juneau County is a lot of things. It’s gliding along on a well-groomed trail with your friends on a clear, crisp day watching the shimmering trees zoom by. It’s traveling on a moonlight night with somebody special riding behind you as you wind your way to that favorite night spot. It’s stopping to watch a herd of whitetails or a flock of turkeys disappear in a flash or listening to the sounds of the woods, rivers and lakes before moving on. We have hundreds of miles of trails that are well-groomed and clearly marked thanks to the efforts of our local snowmobile clubs. Try cross-country skiing this winter. It may not be as fast as down-hill skiing, but cross-country skiing will tone your upper and lower body and give you a great cardio workout! Or try snowshoeing, slush along snow-covered trails and have great conversation while taking in the beauty of nature.

Juneau County, WI was established in 1857 when the State of Wisconsin passed legislation separating lands west of the Wisconsin River from what was then Adams County. The county was named after Solomon Juneau, a Milwaukee legislator who influenced the legislation establishing Juneau County. Today, Juneau County retains the charm of the early days, while it moves forward into the future of electronic government. Juneau County is your pathway to adventure. Juneau County's natural beauty brings year round pleasure to area residents and visitors alike. Geographical diversity is a hallmark of Juneau County. From sand country to hill country, from northern forests to unglaciated “driftless areas,” we have beautiful and scenic landscapes. Most of what is today’s Juneau County was carved out of the sandstone bedrock during the last North American Glacial Period some 18,000 years ago. For a long time, Juneau County was covered by the glacial Lake Wisconsin. The lake (up to 150’ deep) stretched over 1,800 sq. miles from Tomah to the west and up to Stevens Point in the north. A huge natural dam formed by rock, earth and sand burst some 14,000 years ago. After three days it took to drain the lake, the runoff created a new course for the Wisconsin River, carved out the Wisconsin Dells and moved south
toward Baraboo to create Devil’s Lake. The rocky outcroppings, called buttes or bluffs, you see throughout the central and northern part of the county are really the tops of islands that dotted the surface of glacial Lake Wisconsin. If you’re ambitious, climbing to the top of one of these ‘islands’ shows you the outline of the old lake. The low and sandy prairies you see are the old lakebed. Much of the southern part of the county escaped the destructive force of the last glacial period and is part of the “driftless” region of Wisconsin. Juneau County History Our heritage adventure starts with a look backwards in time at the people and places of Juneau County. The first known inhabitants of the area were the people of the Woodland Culture. These semi-nomadic people hunted, gathered and farmed this area after the draining of glacial Lake Wisconsin some 14,000 years ago. These early people raised corn, squash and beans and harvested wild blueberries, cranberries and other wild fruit for use during their winter camps. Others harvested wild rice, buffalo, deer, moose and other wild game. The rivers of Juneau County were the highways that allowed exploration. Rivers such as the Wisconsin, the Lemonweir, the Yellow and the Baraboo were used to harvest the abundant natural resources of the county and early settlements along those rivers included Mauston, New Lisbon, Necedah, Elroy and Wonewoc. After the period of early exploration, trading posts and sawmills sprang up to harvest the abundant pine timber that covered the county. Unwise harvesting practices soon exhausted these resources and as the land was
stripped, agriculture took hold. Crops of summer wheat, tobacco, corn, sphagnum moss, hops, grains and cranberries were harvested, sold and traded by early farmers who survived brutal winters and the backbreaking task of eking a living out of the land. Much of the land, especially in the northern part of the county, was unsuitable for agriculture and the sandy, light soil of the Lemonweir River Valley blew away during the spring. Even with these long odds, agriculture became the largest industry in the county and today still holds that position. The mix is different now than it was back then. Dairy, hogs and sheep are more prevalent and corn, soybeans and wheat are the main crops. With the coming of the railroads in the mid-1800s, Juneau County’s geographical location midway between Chicago and Minneapolis made it an important part of rail history. the Chicago & Northwestern Railway and Mauston, New Lisbon and Camp Douglas were regular stops on the old Milwaukee Road. The present Interstate system (I90-94) roughly parallels the Milwaukee Road as it cuts diagonally across the county. Necedah was served by the Chicago & Northwestern and served as an important rail point for access to northern and central Wisconsin. At one time, passenger service was available at many of these stops to connect Juneau County residents with the world. The Chicago & Northwestern Railroad beds around Elroy, Camp Douglas, Union Center and Wonewoc have been converted into bike trails including the Elroy-Sparta State Trail, the Omaha Trail and the ‘400’ Trail.

Juneau County History
Native Americans left an indelible mark on south-central Wisconsin and many dedicated Ho-Chunk are still working hard today to preserve that legacy. Deanna Laufenberg, New Lisbon Library Director, received a donation from the Harry Mortensen family that took years to collect that is several thousands of years old. During the 1960s, Mortensen collected more than 12,000 Native American artifacts, dating from 500-1200 A.D. With more than 4,000 pieces — all found in Juneau County — it’s one of the largest personal collections in the state. Mortensen’s goal was to keep his vast collection in Juneau County and give future generations the opportunity to enjoy artifacts from a time when
Wisconsin looked very different from the state we know today.

The New Lisbon library also received arrowheads and other artifacts from Roger Mortensen (no relation).
The Town of Armenia also features several effigy mounds, along with Mauston and several other spots in south central Wisconsin.
Some of Harry Mortensen’s collection is more than 10,000 years old. One of the most unique items among the artifacts is a fragment of melted sand, hardened after a lighting strike and preserved for centuries. The library isn’t the only place in New Lisbon to find ancient native history. New Lisbon Indian Mounds Park, also known as Gee’s Slough Group, is located on Indian Mounds Road, a few miles south of New Lisbon on Highway 12 and 16. The park features several rolling burial mounds and the sacred native landmark was placed on the
Natives of Juneau County left their mark in other ways, too. Near Hustler, ancient petroglyphs are etched into the stone along Twin Bluffs and the bluff at the mouth of the Lemonweir River. The pictorial etchings (one resembles a thunderbird) are believed to have been carved by the Winnebago Ho-Chunk tribe between 100 B.C. to 1650 A.D.
