LOYAL, Wis. – The 2022 Farm Technology Days in Clark County is being held July 12-14 at Roehl Acres and Rustic Occasions just south of Loyal. Dennis and Suzie Roehl, owners of Roehl Acres, say they’re exited to host this year’s show. “If anyone is wondering how this came about, it’s probably because I have too much time in the tractor. I do a lot of thinking in the tractor,” Dennis Roehl said. “I came home and said, ‘Hey, what would think of this?’ And my wife looked at me and shook her head and said, ‘You better talk to your dad.’ “So I talked to my dad and talked to my uncle and they all thought it was a good idea. So I went back to my wife and said, ‘What do you think?’ And she said, ‘If you think we can do this, we can do it.’ And then I got to thinking, ‘Boy, Doug and Kim (Roehl, of

We’re very excited to have this just to showcase what we’ve done here and what our parents have done. I think it’s very amazing.” His parents, Velora and Lowell Roehl, bought the farm in 1967 milking 33 cows, expanding to 82 cows in 1973 – a lot of cows at the time. They built the house and the shed in 1976 – the same year. “Which nobody ever did and mom said they’d never do that again,” Dennis Roehl said. They expanded to 114 cows in 1996. It was then that Dennis Roehl came home from college and started farming with them. They

Rustic Occasions, a beautiful wedding barn, is offering lots of activities happening during the three-day 2022 Farm Technology Days in Clark County. Doug and Kim Roehl are the owners; they’re co-hosting the show with his brother’s family. Kim Roehl said, “We started our business around four years ago. It didn’t start as an intentional event barn but that’s what it rolled into. Our daughter got engaged and her venue was booked when she was going to have it. So, we said ‘How about the barn?’ We started cleaning things, started fixing things, and it just snowballed from there. And we are busy, busy, busy to say the least.

Biggest Weed contest returns Wisconsin Farm Technology Days
For many years one of the stiffest competitions at Wisconsin Farm Technology Days was who could bring the biggest weed to the show. The contest is back, at the Extension Education Station. “We are going to focus on the theme of traditional agriculture and the highlights of the new technology,” said Richard Halopka, crops and soils educator with the University of WisconsinDivision of Extension. There will be animals onsite to demonstrate the use of beef semen on dairy cows. On the crop side there will be demonstration plots that showcase alternative forages should an alfalfa crop fail. There will be alternatives to corn and soybeans as well as cover crops on display. In previous years UWExtension had a “weed doc-

pert. That resulted in an annual Biggest Weed Contest. Halopka invites folks to bring any problem bug or weed to the Education Station. “We will have people there to identify it and make recommendations,” he said. “Who knows, you may have the biggest weed. The grand prize is bragging rights; someday you can tell your grandchildren, ‘I got the tallest weed at Farm Tech Days!’” The Extension Education Station is on the east side of Tent City on Swiderski Equipment Avenue between the two 6th streets. Farm Tech Days activities at the barn are varied. • Tuesday, July 12 – food demos – “They’re going to demonstrate how to make a few items, and (visitors) can taste them and get the recipe for them,” she said. • Wednesday, July 13 – country band, line dancing and lunch • Thursday, July 14 – lunch, goat-soap demonstrations and Uplifting Movement, the dance academy from Loyal “The thing about Farm Technology Days is that people get nostalgic about it,” said Randy Romanski, secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection. “People may have come to these events when they were a kid, so that’s the nostalgic element of it. Farm Technology Days is something to celebrate the future as well. It makes me think how agriculture and farmers adapt and innovate.” The 2022 Farm Technology Days in Clark County is being held July 12-14 at Roehl Acres and Rustic Occasions, N7779 County Highway K, just south of Loyal, Wisconsin. expanded into the barn that’s currently Rustic Occasions. “I actually milked in the basement of this barn and we had hay upstairs in this barn,” he said. “So you can appreciate how much work went into this barn; we had it stacked full. And I mean full, full. Right up to the track. Doug and Kim took everything out, cleaned it up. It’s actually amazing how much they’ve done to this place.” The family expanded again in 2010, building a freestall barn. They moved the cattle to that barn and moved everything to the home farm. They’ve since put in four robotic milkers. “They’ve been going for three weeks and everybody asks how they’re going,” he said. “(I said,) ‘They’re working their butts off and so are we!’ “The new technology that these things have is amazing. All the cows have ‘fitbits’ on them so we can track all their activities – that they’re running around, how much they’re doing, see if they’re sick. The technology that is out there is absolutely amazing. We have automatic feed pushers. We have automatic scrapers.” At this year’s show the family is bringing back field demonstrations; they had been discontinued for a couple of years. “I think that is a very important thing to have so you can see, not just technology on the farm, but also out in the field because that technology has really blown up over the years,” Roehl said. “Another thing we’re having is farm tours. Our farm tours are going to be a little unique. Most of the time when you get a farm tour, you get on a bus and that’s it. We’re getting off the bus at the farm. You’ll actually be able to walk through my barn, past the robots, look at the robots, spend as much time as you want there looking at the robots, and then we’ll go through the milk house and then you can feed a calf. “I think that’s very important to have. People just don’t realize what it is to feed a calf anymore. And the kids don’t know what it is. And I think that’s very important for the public to know. “So we’re not going to have a schedule. You (can) get back on your bus – or a different bus; they come through every 10 to 20 minutes. And then the buses will come here (Rustic Occasions) and you’ll be able to walk around here. So I think it’s going to be unique.” The 2022 Farm Technology Days in Clark County is being held July 12-14 at Roehl Acres and Rustic Occasions, N7779 County Highway K, just south of Loyal, Wisconsin. Pyramid hitch returns home Wisconsin Farm Technology Days
The year was 2005; Clark County was hosting Wisconsin Farm Technology Days at Malm’s Rolling Acres just north of Loyal, Wisconsin. A new feature at the show was the Meyer Farms 10-Horse Belgian Pyramid Hitch. The hitch had started as a novelty class at the Central Wisconsin State Fair a few years earlier. The class was held only a few years at the fair. But the Meyers were game
to hitch it twice each day at the 2005 Farm Tech Days. It was a hit. Since then the hitch has been featured at a number of Farm Technology Days, most recently in 2018 in Wood County. It’s also appeared at numerous fairs and festivals across Wisconsin, including the Midwest Horse Fair and most recently the Dairyfest Parade in Marshfield. Please see HITCH, Page 7

Which Barn is Best For Your Herd? Starwood Rafter Uses: • Pole Sheds • Free Stalls • Pavilion Shelters • Machinery Storage • Riding Arena Birds just love this barn. The webs in these trusses are easy nest areas for birds. They also restrict air flow which leads to poor ventilation and moisture buildup in the building.
• Spans up to 72 ft. • Stronger. Can be spaced up to 12 feet apart depending on the load you desire • Bird Nesting Control
The arched rafters create a more open barn allowing better ventilation. Also since there are no open webs in the trusses, there are no places for birds to nest.
• Better Ventilation & Visibility • No Feed Alley Post Obstruction

Wisconsin Farm Technology Days
The need to be safe is of the utmost importance every day on the farm. That’s the objective of everyone involved with the Farm Safety and Rescue Area at the 2022 Wisconsin Farm Technology Days. Melissa Ploeckelman with the National Farm Medicine Center is leading the effort. Area fire departments are joining together to demonstrate how to prevent farm incidents and how to rescue after a farm incident has happened. One feature will be a tractor roll-over demonstration, which will show how a roll-over protection structure can save lives. “With a ‘ROPS’ and a seatbelt, the operator is 99 percent likely to survive,” Ploeckelman said. Without a roll-over protection structure the chance of survival is just 3 percent. Visitors to the display can learn about the National Farm Medicine Center’s rebate program for roll-over protection structures. It helps with the cost to retro-fit older tractors without a roll-over protection structure. Another dangerous area on the farm is the grain bin. The Pittsville Fire Department will bury a person to the waist in the department’s grain-bin simulator, then demonstrate the grain-bin rescue unit. “They need 300 pounds of pressure to pull them out of that grain,” Ploeckelman said. “That amount of pressure would rip someone in half.” Fire Department members will talk about the importance of following safety procedures when entering a grain bin. All three demonstrations will be conducted all three days of the 2022 Wisconsin Farm Technology Days, which is being held July 12-14 at Roehl Acres and Rustic Occasions, N7779 County Highway K, just south of Loyal, Wisconsin. 2022 WISCONSIN FARM TECHNOLOGY DAYS
Field demos return Wisconsin Farm Technology Days
Hayleage will be the focus of field demonstrations this year at Wisconsin Farm Technology Days. Chair Ron Zygarlicke said perhaps the biggest challenge was to find machinery. Supply-chain issues have left many dealers with limited inventory. “Thankfully we have nine or 10 companies that have said yes; they will do demos,” he said. Demonstrations are going to be different this year compared to previous shows. For one thing the morning sessions will be different than the afternoon sessions. There will be mowing, merging and forage-harvesting in the mornings – except no mowing Thursday morning. In the afternoons there will be raking, baleage-baling and baleage-wrapping. The format will be different this year as well. Zygarlicke does numerous farm shows throughout the year for H & S Manufacturing; he’s patterning the field demos after a forage show in Pennsylvania. “You will first listen to the representative from that manufacturer talk about that machine for just a few minutes,” he said. The representative will take the machine down the field 1,000 to 1,200 yards, and then will return to the start. Once all machines have made their runs, the education starts. “We will drop the rope and allow you to come on and talk to those manufacturer reps,” Zygarlicke said. Because so much has changed in forage-harvesting, there’s a lot to learn, he said. Another idea he brought to the show this year is that seed companies have seed plots right in Tent City; they’re on the west side by the Heritage Machinery display. Plus as part of the Heritage display there’s a demonstration of “check-row planting.” Check-row planting was a prominent planting style from the 1870s until the advent of chemical weed control in the mid-1950s. Each day part of the plot that was planted earlier will be cultivated and additional planting will be done. The 2022 Farm Technology Days in Clark County is being held July 12-14 at Roehl Acres and Rustic Occasions, N7779 County Highway K, just south of Loyal, Wisconsin. 2022 WISCONSIN FARM TECHNOLOGY DAYS
Youth area double fun this year Wisconsin Farm Technology Days
It will be double the educational opportunities in the Youth Area at Wisconsin Farm Technology Days this year. Chair Cindy Kolzow said the focus is on “toddlers to teenagers.” There will be emphasis in three areas – careers in agriculture, safety in agriculture and livestock education. “All exhibitors will offer hands-on activities to learn about something that is agriculture-related,” she said. Farm safety will be the main purpose of those with displays in the youth area. The three area technical colleges that serve Clark County will offer opportunities to learn about everything from animal science to landscape, and turf management to drone operations. “Even if you are not from a farm, we hope you can learn a little bit about what goes into producing your food,” Kolzow said. The Indoor Stage will feature the talent of local students and 4-H clubs, including performers from a local dance studio. The Outdoor Stage will offer clinics to learn more about showing animals – everything from dairy to rabbits. There will also be a tent that will showcase many of the projects available through 4-H, and display many of the area State Proficiency Award entries from local FFA Chapters. It will also offer various hands-on activities. The Youth Area is at the corner of 6th Street and Wisconsin Avenue on the west side of Tent City. The 2022 Farm Technology Days in Clark County is being held July 12-14 at Roehl Acres and Rustic Occasions, N7779 County Highway K, just south of Loyal, Wisconsin. Visit www. wifarmtechdays.org for more information.

Toys reflect county heritage Wisconsin Farm Technology Days
The 2022 Wisconsin Farm Technology Days commemorative toys are a 1/64th scale Meyer’s 8126RT Forage Box Set including a forage trailer and truck-mounted box. The boxes reflect Clark County-based Meyer Manufacturing Corporation. Alvin Meyer patented the False-Endgate box in 1951, which was later redesigned to become what is believed to be the first-ever selfunloading forage box. The 8100RT BOSS can now be seen across the country. The 2022 Wisconsin Farm Technology Days is being held July 12-14 at Roehl Acres and Rustic Occasions, N7779 County Highway K, just south of Loyal, Wisconsin. Grab good food at more good places Wisconsin Farm Technology Day
LOYAL, Wis. – It’s been said there are two things people remember most about Farm Technology Days – the weather and the food. Clark County can’t do much about the weather, but the food will be excellent – and there will be more places to get it. New to the show this year will be four “Grab and Go” stations on the four corners of Innovation Square. Food Co-Chair Tom Odeen said the four stations will offer a bag lunch, which includes either a cold turkey or ham sandwich, chips, cheese, vegetable or fruit, and beverage. The main objective of a Grab and Go station is to accommodate those exhibitors at the show who are by themselves and can’t leave their space long enough to go to one of the big food tents. Mauel’s Sunshine Ice Cream will also be available at those stations. There will also be four main food tents with full menus featuring locally sourced hamburgers and cheeseburgers. The featured burger will be “The Roehl Splitter,” which is a cheeseburger with two “rail” strips of bacon on top. There will also be a “Double Roehl Splitter.” All burgers will be grilled on the grounds. And of course there will be plenty of Mauel’s Sunshine Ice Cream, a Clark County original. Breakfast will be available for exhibitors starting at 7 each morning in Food Tent No. 2. It will feature pancakes with maple syrup, sausage, cheese, milk and coffee. Breakfast will be available until 10 am in Tent 2. The 2022 Farm Technology Days in Clark County is being held July 12-14 at Roehl Acres and Rustic Occasions, N7779 County Highway K, just south of Loyal, Wisconsin.
