TRIP

DAY TRIPS fall & winter 2017-18

Hands On Experiences

at the Horicon Marsh Explorium

Markesan A Grand Community - Come to Enjoy Life.

Within the marsh there are hiking and bicycling trails, driving trails, two boardwalks, fishing piers, boat launches and canoe/ kayak trails. (See back page for Bike/Auto Tour map) Geocaching is enjoyed on the southern end of the marsh. Of course birding, photography, hiking, hunting, site seeing, snowshoeing, cross country skiing and fishing are popular activities on the marsh as well. The Horicon Marsh Explorium is a must see on your day trip to the marsh. It is located at N7725 Hwy. 28 in Horicon. Guests of Horicon Marsh’s Explorium will get a glimpse of life at Horicon Marsh thousands of years before European settlement and witness how the current wetland came to be. The experience is narrated by a Clovis point arrowhead, that keeps visitors company throughout the journey as they view, listen to, touch, and even smell exhibits that document the changes to the marsh over time. Videos and interactive displays greet you at every turn, encouraging audiences of any age to learn more about the history and ecology of Horicon Marsh. A wooly mammoth replica that children are free to touch and climb represents wildlife that roamed the land during the Ice Age and also served as an important food source for early Native Americans. Relics from the age of European settlement as well as modern hunting and trapping equipment illustrate the marsh’s popularity as a waterfowl hunting site. Games encourage visitors to learn about wildlife identification. Viewers can also gain a singularly thrilling perspective on the management and conservation activities currently occurring on the marsh before heading out to enjoy it for themselves. Go to www.horiconmarsh. org for more information.

M

arkesan’s intriguing past of missing gold, murder, and love of the land can be experienced by visiting the Grand River Valley Museum and Train Depot. The Grand River winds through town, highlighting the city with nature and wildlife. Take a walk through our downtown city streets and discover nostalgic Victorian homes as well as unique stores. Head to the countryside to find horse-drawn buggies and distinct craftsmanship, prepared by the large Amish population of the area. Explore their unique lifestyle by visiting their old-fashioned stores filled with hand made goods. An active approach to experiencing Markesan might involve fishing in Little Green Lake or Lake Puckaway for walleye, bass, perch, bluegill or muskie. Hunters and snowmobilers will find plentiful game and excellent trails. DAY TRIPS fall & winter 2017-18

Fox Lake While you may hear a fish tale or two, Fox Lake has a unique experience to offer all.

F

rom the ripple of a wave to the roar of a snowmobile, the lake has many activities for all interests in all seasons. Our lakeside community hosts fishing events, ice races, and guided or rented boat tours. While visiting our lake community, be sure to venture downtown. Peruse our vintage and specialty shops or dine at one of the area’s many restaurants. Fox Lake is a city rich in history. The Fox Lake Depot building houses many historical displays, as does the Car Shed. The Car Shed houses a 1940s-era Fairbanks gas-engine-powered track car, the summer kitchen, working blacksmith shop, and Sinclair Gas Station building on the Depot grounds. They house items related to the theme of each building as well as farming and local business artifacts, Native American arrowheads, tools, weapons, military uniforms and equipment, an extraordinary Civil War artifact collection, a Bunny Berrigan collection dedicated to the famous jazz musician, and photographs of the people, places, buildings, and businesses that made Fox Lake what it is today.

Stop in at our Chamber office at 305 W. State St. (inside Nehls Realty) or give us a call at 920-928-3777.
