History of Dodge County More than 10,000 years ago, small bands of people entered what is now Dodge County on the edge of the receding glacier. As hunters and gatherers, early native Americans followed and hunted herds of large animals and gathered food stuffs. The river systems from the south were used by early inhabitants to reach the wildlife and other resources the county provided in abundance. Numerous sites within the county show evidence of the early inhabitants including stone tools, campsites and settlements, burial and effigy mounds, garden plots and paintings and carvings on rock outcrops and stones.

The first white settlers were drawn for reasons of bountiful agricultural lands, with wheat, corn, oats, potatoes and apples being the primary crops. Wheat growing was later replaced with dairy farming. Before mass settlement and agricultural pursuits, Dodge County was covered mainly with forests, wetlands, prairie and oak savannas.

Dodge County was created in 1836 and named in honor of Henry Dodge, then territorial governor of Wisconsin. The Town of Victory was chosen as the County Seat. The Town of Victory was later renamed City of Juneau after Paul Juneau, the son of Solomon Juneau, founder of Milwaukee.

In 1845, iron ore was discovered in Mayville and an iron ore works operated there for several decades until competition from mines in the Lake Superior region closed them.

Sawmills and gristmills were widely distributed over Dodge County in the 1870's.

In 1875, John Jossie, came from Switzerland, developed the variety of cheese known as “Brick”, and opened the first factory in the United States to produce brick cheese. The factory operated in Watertown until 1943.

Dodge is a leading county in the production of cheese, barley, alfalfa, hay and peas for canning. Industries include the manufacture of wood products, shoes, metal products, lawn care equipment, magazines, stainless steel equipment and ice fishing equipment.

Beaver Dam Area Community Theatre

Schauer Arts and Activities Center

The Seippel Homestead and Center for the Arts, managed by the Beaver Dam Area Arts Association, features six exhibits each year, including a wildlife and landscape exhibit, an area high school art exhibit, a Holiday Gift Gallery, and several other major exhibits of national, state and area artists’ works. The BDAAA offers a year-round gift shop, classes, clubs, and special programs and events.

The BDACT building provides an ideal intimate theater with excellent acoustics and two floors of work, storage, and performance space. In recent years, to accommodate our increasingly larger audiences, we present our summer musicals at the state-of-the art Beaver Dam High School auditorium.

The Schauer Center is the Kettle Moraine’s regional center for the arts—staging professional touring performances through its Performing Arts Series as well as performances by schools and its resident groups.

The Schauer Center also offers classes in the visual and performing arts for all ages.

Downtown Beaver Dam the heart of our community

D

owntown Beaver Dam has been the commercial hub of Dodge County ever since a dam was constructed to harness the water power of the Beaver Dam River in 1843. The marsh behind the dam became Beaver Dam Lake.

Water powered a flour mill, a woolen mill, a cotton mill and other enterprises that raised Beaver Dam from its humble start as Grubville, as it was known to its detractors. It was also essential for brewing beer and making cheese (at Phenix Cheese, today called Kraft Foods).

An early enterprise included a blacksmith shop – the first spark of a thriving metal fabrication industry which still dominates Beaver Dam’s manufacturing sector.

Over the past decade merchants and city government have transformed the downtown business district into a beautiful place. The Beaver Dam River, once hidden behind and beneath downtown buildings, now flows unimpeded through the heart of the city. Changes have been made including the installation of ornamental crossings and light posts, façade improvements, other streetscape improvements and more. The process continues, with new businesses complimenting old favorites, offering a wide range of products and services for shoppers young and old.

This year will be marked by the installation of about a dozen murals on the walls of downtown buildings. The Decorate the Dam Mural Festival will take place June 28 to July. All murals are steeped in history depicting the county fair, the city library, beer/breweries, banking, education, veterans/patriotism, vintage cars/racing, churches, parks and recreation, science fiction writer Raymond Gallun, the Gould Nursery, motorcycles and more. All are invited to join in the fun with entertainment, live music, art, children’s events, while watching the murals transform the city.

eaver Dam is located on shores of Beaver Dam Lake, the 15th largest lake in Wisconsin. The community currently has 20 municipal parks, with more in the development stage. Many feature public picnic areas, playground equipment and several have boat launch access to the lake.

Locals and visitors enjoy golfing, hiking, biking, swimming, water skiing, boating, fishing, waterfowl hunting and other outdoor sports throughout the spring, summer and autumn. Winter brings ice fishing, snowmobiling, iceskating, cross-country skiing and tobogganing. The Beaver Dam Raceway is adjacent to the city, and the Dodge County Fairgrounds, home to seasonal events and the Dodge County Fair, is just east of Beaver Dam. There are free summer ski shows by the award winning Beaverland Must-Skis ski team June through August. Two quality golf courses provide golf enthusiasts with hours of recreation. The Beaver Dam Country Club is located just north of the city and Old Hickory Golf Club is located just east of the city.

Cultural attractions include live, local theatrical entertainment through the Beaver Dam Area Community Theatre (BDACT) and changing exhibits at the Seippel Center for the Arts. Beaver Dam is also home to the Dodge County Historical Society Museum.

Lake Sinissippi

Lake Sinissippi is a haven for wildlife. The fisheries consist of northern pike, walleye, catfish and carp. A variety of waterfowl are either residents or visitors to the lake every year. American white pelicans, sandhill cranes, blue herons, Canada geese, eagles and others provide great opportunities for bird watching.

Each season brings new activities and opportunities. The Lake Sinissippi Ski Club offers “Learn to Ski” programs every summer.

The LSA 4th of July Lakefest and the Venetian Nite lighted boat parade in August highlight the summer events. Water skiing, swimming, wave runners, pontooning, kayaking, and canoeing are activities enjoyed all summer long. There are many places to explore with nine islands, backwaters and feeder creeks.

Winter brings ice racing, snowmobiling and skiing to the snow covered ice. Lake Sinissippi is a wildlife haven with easy access for all boaters.

Lake Size: 2,855 Acres Maximum Depth: 8 Ft.

Fox Lake

The City of Fox Lake is located on the southeast shore of the lake where a city park with a boat landing provides recreational access. A town park with a boat landing provides access on the north side of the lake.

Fox Lake is heavily used for boating, water skiing, and fishing. Fox Lake drains toward Beaver Dam Lake via Mill Creek.

As the 16th largest lake in Wisconsin, Beaver Dam Lake is the home of a variety of wildlife and fun events all year round. There are five city parks and one county park, as well as six boat landings making for easy access. The lake is well suited for non-motorized vessels like kayaks, canoes and standup paddle boards (rentals available at Waterworks Park) and with 6,542 acres there is plenty of room for pontoon boats, water skiers, fishing boats and wave runners. Winter brings the snowmobilers, skiers and ice fishermen. The lake is home to a variety of fish, including northern pike, walleye, bass, catfish, bullhead and a variety of pan fish. Events in and around the lake include fish tournaments, kids Fish ‘n Fun, Lake Days celebration and The Great Beaver Paddle Festival as well as being home to the nationally recognized Beaverland Must-Ski Water Shows.

Lake Size: 2,625 Acres Maximum Depth: 22 Ft.

Lake Emily

Lake Emily is a shallow, fertile lake located in the extreme northwest corner of Dodge County. The lake provides a quality fishery primarily of perch, bluegills, largemouth bass, and northern pike and receives heavy usage year round. Much of the lakeshore is developed with cottages and homes, except for the west side which is still undeveloped.

A town-owned boat landing provides good fishing and boating access on the southern end of the lake.

Lake Size: 268 Acres Maximum Depth: 17 Ft.

Lost Lake

Lost Lake is located in west-central Dodge County. The lake is popular for fishing. Much of the shoreline consists of marshy areas. Boat ramps exist on the north and south sides of the lake as extensions of the town roads.

Dodge County offers several excellent paddling opportunities. Horicon Marsh offers winding channels, open water and expansive wetlands to explore. Canoe and kayak rentals are available in the City of Horicon. Enjoy some paddle time on Beaver Dam Lake! The gentle current you’ll find on the Rock and Crawfish rivers make them ideal for paddling. One of the most popular launches is Harnischfeger Park on the Rock River. The glaciers that once covered Dodge County have sculpted a landscape ideal for auto touring.

Several scenic overlooks around the Horicon Marsh allow you to view the wetland’s wildlife.

Follow the brown signs that mark the route of the Horicon Marsh Parkway, a 50-mile auto tour that encircles the Horicon Marsh and follows state and county highways through Burnett, Kekoskee, Horicon, Mayville and Waupun. The Parkway is easily accessible from U.S. Highway 151 or State Highway 41 by following State Highway 33 to access the south end of the Fish end & Wildlife Service Parkway or Highway 49 to access the north of the Parkway.

Snowmobile enthusiasts will find an interconnected system of more than 320 miles of groomed county snowmobile trails that traverse farm fields, woodlots, lowlands and the Wild Goose State Trail, with another 180 miles of unfunded “club-owned” trails available for use within the county. Dodge County opens 20 miles of ATV trails from Dec. 1 through Mar. 31. Riding is only permitted during that time when the county has officially declared the trail open. The ATV trail can be opened if there is sufficient ground freeze or snowbase to prevent damage to the trail surface. The trails are primarily located on the surfaced areas of Wild Goose State Trail and the designated ATV trail routes through Burnett and East Waupun.

The ATV trail runs from the parking lot at Hwy. 60 north to Hwy. 49. Check www.co.dodge.wi.us.com for trail openings.

Wild Goose State Trail Wild Goose State Trail links the City of Juneau - "Gateway to the Wild Goose Trail" and the City of Fond du Lac. This 34 mile compacted limestone trail on an abandoned railroad grade traverses oak woodlots, fertile farm fields, prairie remnants and sparkling streams as it runs through the rural country sides of Dodge and Fond du Lac Counties and skirts the western edge of the internationally known Horicon Marsh National Wildlife Refuge. Wildlife, scenery and level surface provide safe, easy and enjoyable biking and hiking for all ages. Parking and trail access available at the southern trail head at Hwy 60 and the northern trail head on Rolling Meadows Drive in Fond du Lac and numerous points between. County and private campgrounds located nearby. A separate horse trail tread runs from Hwy 60. The trail can be opened for snowmobile and ATV use in winter.

Dodge County welcomes horseback riding on a separate 14-mile pathway along the Wild Goose State Trail between Highway 60 and Pautsch Road (about four miles north of Burnett). Trail terrain is generally easy riding, although special caution is necessary in areas with steep side slopes, wet crossings and near highways and roads. The trail surface is grass, dirt and wood chips and winds through wooded and open areas in the right-of-way of the Wild Goose Trail. Horses are not allowed on the limestonesurfaced trail except at designated horse trail crossings.

History enthusiasts will delight in Watertown’s rich heritage and historical sites, including the Octagon House Museum and America’s First Kindergarten.

The locations are open to visitors from May through October with guided tours. Don’t miss the Octagon House Ice Cream Social with 1st Brigade Band Concert held every August.

Nine walking/driving tour brochures guide you through historic neighborhoods and commercial districts, highlighting historical architecture, ghost signs and murals, and local haunting legends. Brochures and commemorative postcards are available through the Chamber of Commerce.

The Dodge-Jefferson Counties Genealogical Society offers assistance for beginners and experienced family history researchers.

TIME FOR SOME FUN!

A city for all seasons, Watertown offers an abundance of outdoor recreation. Kayakers will enjoy paddling the Rock River Trail. Watertown’s ample park system is sure to impress visitors with 22 parks covering over 263 acres. Wooded walking trails, 21 hole Frisbee golf course, skate park, fishing areas, lighted tennis courts, basketball courts, volleyball courts, ice skating, cross country skiing, and playgrounds are among the many amenities offered. Don’t miss the Watertown Aquatic Center, featuring water slides and other wet and wild activities for all ages.

MAJOR EVENTS AND FESTIVALS

If golf is on the agenda, Windwood of Watertown is a public golf course, which includes outstanding amenities and appeals to a variety of skill levels. If indoor activities are called for, bowl a few frames at Watertown Bowl, catch a movie at Towne Cinema, or have some fun at Skate Express Family Roller Rink.

Visitors may also take a coffee class on select dates at Berres Brothers Coffee Roasters, learning how to roast, grind, and brew the perfect cup of coffee.

Each year, Watertown is host to many major events and festivals. Riverfest, a FREE four-day music festival is held annually in August. It features nationally known entertainers, a carnival, classic car show, craft show, fireworks, and the popular “Taste of Watertown” food pavilion.

Watertown’s beauty lends a great backdrop for the many races the city hosts. Participate in a 5k, 10k, or half marathon, bike through the countryside in Tour da Goose, or run/bike/run in the Share the Road Duathlon. The views won’t disappoint!

ART, ANTIQUES, & SHOPPING GALORE! Our downtown boasts something for everyone, making it a memorable shopping experience whether you fancy crafts, antiques, art, jewelry (fine or artisan), music, or anything in between!

The city is home to two Farmer’s Markets. Watertown Farmer’s Market is held in Riverside Park every Tuesday from May through mid-November from 7am to 12pm, and Garden Tales Farmer’s Market is held each Thursday (August through October), in the parking lot of the Watertown Public Library on Water St. from 3:00-6:00pm.

he City of Juneau, settled in 1845 and the Dodge County Seat, is a rural community which has numerous historical buildings and sites for the history buff and amateur alike.

Community events in Juneau include a citywide rummage sale and a farmerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s market that is held from May to October.

The city also offers many recreational opportunities. The Wild Goose State Trail runs directly through the city, offering hiking and bicycling. Stop for refreshments at one of the local restaurants. A park, just adjacent to the Wild Goose State trail, is a fine place to rest, camp or take a shower. The park is located north of Center Street or south of Home Road (also County DF).

The southern end of the thirty-four mile nature trail starts just four miles south of Juneau on Highway 60. A separate horseback-riding trail runs alongside the trail for fourteen miles from Hwy 60 north to Minnesota Junction. In the winter, snowmobilers and ATV riders can enjoy the scenic route.

Knowledge of the history and archaeology of Fox Lake was enriched in 1983 when the Fox Lake Inland Lake Rehabilitation and Protection District installed a sewer system. Workers uncovered one of Wisconsin’s largest archaeological discoveries on Elmwood Island in Fox Lake.The details of the dig and artifacts were painstakingly catalogued and preserved. The Fox Lake Historical Museum, in the old train depot, displays the findings from the archaeological dig as well as other local history.

Visit Horicon Marsh Horicon Marsh is the largest freshwater cattail marsh in the contiguous United States with over 33,000 acres of wetland.

G

et outdoors and experience the wildlife and many seasons of natural beauty at Horicon Marsh. The marsh provides habitat for endangered species and is a critical rest stop for thousands of migrating ducks and Canada geese. Because of its importance to wildlife, Horicon Marsh has been formally recognized as a Wetland of International Importance by the Ramsar Convention of the United Nations, is a “Globally Important Bird Area” and is a unit of the Ice Age Scientific Reserve. It has also been designated as one the “Seven Natural Wonders of Wisconsin” and is often referred to as the “Little Everglades of the North.”

Located in southeast Wisconsin, this vast wetland is only a one hour drive from Milwaukee and Madison. While the marsh in renowned for its migrant flocks of Canada geese, it is also home to more than 300 resident and migratory bird species which have been sighted

over the years. Due to its international significance, scientists from around the world have traveled here for professional training to improve conservation programs in their own countries.

The Horicon Marsh State Wildlife Area comprises 11,000 acres of the marsh while the northern 22,000 acres is part of the Horicon National Wildlife Refuge. The National Wildlife Refuge was established as a breeding habitat for the Redhead Duck. Besides the over 300 bird species, other wildlife that live on the marsh are muskrats, red foxes, coyotes, turtles, frogs, bats, fish, deer, beaver, raccoons, river otters, mink and much more. New to the marsh is the release of whooping cranes. These were reintroduced in 2011. The chicks were trained by a crane-costumed biologist and left to freely migrate on their own.

They returned to the refuge in 2012 and also utilized other local wetlands.

Within the marsh there are hiking and bicycling trails, driving trails, two boardwalks, fishing piers, boat launches and canoe/kayak trails. Geocaching is enjoyed on the southern end of the marsh. Of course birding, photography, hiking, hunting, site seeing, snowshoeing, cross country skiing and fishing are popular activities on the marsh as well.

Horicon Marsh has a unique and important story to tell. The geologic features of the area, created by our last ice age, were instrumental in providing resources for wildlife and humans alike.

The human history of Horicon Marsh is rich with culture and story; however it is one of tragedy and restoration. The wildlife present today at Horicon Marsh are the result of geologic and human activities, including modern-day wildlife management. To view a movie about the history of the marsh or to see the new “Explorium”, visitors can visit Horicon Marsh Education & Visitor Center on

Hwy 28 between Mayville and Horicon.

Public naturalist talks and hikes are given at both Horicon Marsh Education & Visitor Center and Horicon National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center throughout the year and are free and open to the public. These talks focus on a variety of topics related to the geology, history, wildlife and management of Horicon Marsh. It helps the visitor understand the delicate natural relationship that exists at the 33,000 acre marsh.

Visitors should stop at Horicon Marsh Education & Visitor Center or Horicon National Wildlife Refuge Office and Visitor Center for maps and information about the marsh. Horicon Marsh Education & Visitor Center also has other area visitor information and maps available. There are various restrictions on certain areas of the marsh so visitors should stop for information at one of the visitor centers.

Horicon Marsh Area e xp e r i e n c e i t

Get outdoors this year and experience the wildlife and many seasons of natural beauty at Horicon Marsh. The Horicon Marsh Parkway is a 50-mile auto tour route that follows state and county roadways around the marsh, passing through or near many local communities. There are also roads, hiking and biking trails throughout the property, and a canoe trail accessing the waters of the marsh.

Spring marks the return of mallard ducks, coots, herons, egrets, sandhill cranes, purple martins, warblers, and numerous others. A “chorus” of frogs is sure to be heard throughout the marsh signaling that warmer weather is here. The Horicon Marsh Bird Festival is held annually in May and offers many opportunities to view and photograph spring migrants and resident wildlife.

Summer brings nesting season and warmer weather for hiking and bi-

cycling around the marsh to view an array of bird species with their young.

American white pelicans nest abundantly on the marsh during the summer and may be seen feeding in large groups – “herding” fish into shallower water for easier dining. Several fishing piers are also available at the marsh and make great places to spend relaxing summer afternoons.

Fall is well known for the mass migration of birds (and visitors!) to the marsh - Canada geese, as well as thousands of ducks of many different species – mallards, wood ducks, pintails, wigeon, redheads, bufflehead, and ruddy ducks; as well as impressive numbers of staging sandhill cranes. Opportunities also exist to view whooping cranes.

Although closed for waterfowl hunting, the Horicon National Wildlife Refuge is open for deer and small game hunting seasons in the fall. However there is waterfowl hunting in the State Wildlife Area. Many educational programs and events are held marsh-wide throughout the season.

Winter is characterized as a frozen but peaceful time on the marsh and

is also a good season for wildlife viewing. Eagles, owls, several species of hawks, muskrats, foxes and other wildlife, or evidence of, such as tracks or feathers, may be sighted when the entire marsh is open to snowshoeing, hiking, and cross country skiing (Dec. 1- Mar 15). Snowy owls are a notable species to watch for during the winter months.

DNR educators rely on the diverse wildlife to develop a wide range of educational programs aimed at introducing and sharing our native wildlife with a broad audience.

Horicon Marsh Education & Visitor Center serves as both a destination and gateway for visitors to Horicon Marsh as well as providing for year-round educational opportunities.

More than 500,000 people visit Horicon Marsh annually to observe wildlife in a natural setting, creating a huge demand for interpretive services.

The facility has an auditorium, two classrooms, the Flyway Gift Shop, public viewing area, wildlife displays, a Children’s Discovery Area and other building amenities. Visitors may borrow binoculars, field guides, educational backpacks and snowshoes at no cost.

Visit the new “Explorium”, where you will have the opportunity to travel through time.

Long before Horicon Marsh achieved international status as an important bird and wildlife area and a destination for outdoor recreation, glaciers carved a basin where a wetland would one day form. Today, guests of Horicon Marsh’s “Explorium” can get a glimpse of life at Horicon Marsh thousands of years before European settlement and witness how the current wetland came to be.

Videos and interactive displays greet guests at every turn, encouraging audiences of any age to learn more about the history and ecology of Horicon Marsh. A wooly mammoth replica that children are free to touch and climb represents wildlife that roamed the land during the Ice Age. Relics from the age of European settlement as well as modern hunting and trapping equipment illustrate the marsh’s popularity as a waterfowl hunting site. Games encourage visitors to learn about wildlife identification. An airboat simulator gives visitors a thrilling perspective on the management and conservation activities currently occurring on the marsh before heading out to enjoy it for themselves.
