Come to the new cultural district in downtown Beaver Dam with three place you’ll want to visit or stop at one of our other area attractions.

Catch a live theatrical production at the new Beaver Dam Area Community Theatre Fine Arts Center. View seasonal static art exhibits at the new Dodge County Center for the Arts. History enthusiasts will enjoy the Dodge County Historical Museum with permanent exhibits including “Our Community at War” with artifacts from the American Revolution to the Cold War. Beaver Dam Raceway features exciting dirt track racing action that includes sprint cars, midgets, late models and more. Racing is held every Saturday, May through October, beginning at 6:30 PM. The Family Center and Ice Arena features skating competitions, hockey games and tournaments and open skating 11 months out of the year.

The Gold Star Memorial Trail (GSMT) is an exciting initiative progressing in Dodge County, that will provide an important recreational trail for residents and visitors. It will also serve as a memorial to fallen service members of Dodge County. The trail will stretch from the Beaver Dam to Mayville, traversing approximately 15 miles. The trail will be for non-motorized use, primarily biking and hiking, and will provide opportunities for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter months. The trail connection between the cities of Beaver Dam and Mayville provides important nonmotorized trail links to the Horicon Marsh State Wildlife Area and its world class Education and Visitor Center, the City of Horicon, the Wild Goose State Trail and Nitschke Mounds County Park. Most of the trail will be 10’ wide, asphalt paved and located within highway right of ways separated from vehicle travel lanes. The trail project is broken into 5 phases or segments. Each phase is locally important on their own. However, when combined, they create a significant regional connection between communities. At this time, Phase I from Mayville to the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center is complete. The attached maps provide basic layout and information on each phase.

The glaciers that once covered Dodge County have sculpted a landscape ideal for auto touring.

Several scenic overlooks around the Horicon Marsh allow you to view the wetland’s wildlife.

Follow the brown signs that mark the route of the Horicon Marsh Parkway, a 50-mile auto tour that encircles the Horicon Marsh and follows state and county highways through Burnett, Kekoskee, Horicon, Mayville and Waupun. The Parkway is easily accessible from U.S. Highway 151 or State Highway 41 by following State Highway 33 to access the south end of the Parkway or Highway 49 to access the north end of the Parkway.

Snowmobile enthusiasts will find an interconnected system of more than 320 miles of groomed county snowmobile trails that traverse farm fields, woodlots, lowlands and the Wild Goose State Trail, with another 180 miles of unfunded “club-owned” trails available for use within the county. Trails provide access to trail systems in neighboring counties. The “club-owned” trails serve more of the local users often connecting the county trails and populated areas that provide food, service and overnight facilities. Dodge County opens 20 miles of ATV trails from Dec. 1 Mar. 31. Riding is only permitted during that time when the county has officially declared the trail open. The ATV trail can be opened if there is sufficient ground freeze or snowbase to prevent damage to the trail surface. The trails are primarily located on the surfaced areas of Wild Goose State Trail and the designated ATV trail routes through Burnett and East Waupun.

The ATV trail runs from the parking lot at Highway 60 north to Highway 49. Go to dodgeparks.com for trail openings.

Wild Goose State Trail

Wild Goose State Trail links the City of Juneau - "Gateway to the Wild Goose Trail" and the City of Fond du Lac. This 34 mile compacted limestone trail on an abandoned railroad grade traverses oak woodlots, fertile farm fields, prairie remnants and sparkling streams as it runs through the rural country sides of Dodge and Fond du Lac Counties and skirts the western edge of the internationally known Horicon Marsh National Wildlife Refuge. Wildlife, scenery and level surface provide safe, easy and enjoyable biking and hiking for all ages. Parking and trail access available at the southern trail head at Highway 60 and the northern trail head on Rolling Meadows Drive in Fond du Lac and numerous points between. County and private campgrounds located nearby. A separate horse trail tread runs from Highway 60. The trail can be opened for snowmobile and ATV use in winter.

Dodge County welcomes horseback riding on a separate 14-mile pathway along the Wild Goose State Trail between Highway 60 and Pautsch Road (about four miles north of Burnett). Trail terrain is generally easy riding, although special caution is necessary in areas with steep side slopes, wet crossings and near highways and roads. The trail surface is grass, dirt and wood chips and winds through wooded and open areas in the right-of-way of the Wild Goose Trail. Horses are not allowed on the limestonesurfaced trail except at designated horse trail crossings.

The shallow and narrow character of the Rock River in some locations, makes it susceptible to occasional blockages from tree falls. Short portages to get around the blockages may be necessary especially during periods of low water levels. Astico Park is a favorite launching point for paddling excursions on the scenic Crawfish River. A canoe launch and canoe/kayak rentals are available here.

The Rock River Water Trail is proud to be a designated National Water Trail. The water trail meanders down a gentle gradient through beautiful rural and wilderness landscapes and vibrant urban riverfronts to safely carry the water traveler 320 miles from the headwaters above the Horicon National Wildlife Refuge in south central Wisconsin to the Mississippi River at the Quad Cities of Illinois and Iowa.

The gentle current you’ll find on the Rock and Crawfish Rivers make them ideal for paddling. One of the most popular launches is Harnischfeger Park on the Rock River. Canoe and kayak rentals are also available here. Paddlers can travel upstream for 17 miles to Hustisford or downstream 25 miles to Watertown.

Dodge County offers several excellent paddling opportunities.

Horicon Marsh has winding channels, open water and expansive wetlands to explore. Exploring the Horicon Marsh by canoe is one of the finest ways to experience the marsh and its wildlife. Canoe and kayak rentals are available in the City of Horicon.

Also keep an eye out for the City of Beaver Dam to release water on the Beaver Dam River for recreational paddling.

Cotton Mill Park to County Road J, is a section of the Beaver Dam River that begins as an exhilarating urban paddle before quieting down towards the outskirts of town amongst suburban development, then narrowing again and alternating between wooded corridors, farmland and finally to a wider, almost marshy stretch, before the take-out. Add in a quite handsome train bridge, some minor drops and riffles, and you have yourself a great trip if you can catch it at the right levels.

Lake Sinissippi

Lake Sinissippi is a haven for wildlife. The fisheries consist of northern pike, walleye, catfish and carp. A variety of waterfowl are either residents or visitors to the lake every year. American white pelicans, sandhill cranes, blue herons, Canada geese, eagles and others provide great opportunities for bird watching.

Each season brings new activities and opportunities. The Lake Sinissippi Ski Club offers “Learn to Ski” programs every summer.

The LSA 4th of July Lakefest and the Venetian Nite lighted boat parade in August highlight the summer events. Water skiing, swimming, wave runners, pontooning, kayaking, and canoeing are activities enjoyed all summer long. There are many places to explore with nine islands, backwaters and feeder creeks.

Winter brings ice racing, snowmobiling and skiing to the snow covered ice. Lake Sinissippi is a wildlife haven with easy access for all boaters.

As the 16th largest lake in Wisconsin, Beaver Dam Lake is the home of a variety of wildlife and fun events all year round. There are five city parks and one county park, as well as six boat landings making for easy access. The lake is well suited for non-motorized vessels like kayaks, canoes and standup paddle boards (rentals available at Waterworks Park) and with 6,542 acres there is plenty of room for pontoon boats, water skiers, fishing boats and wave runners. Winter brings the snowmobilers, skiers and ice fishermen. The lake is home to a variety of fish, including northern pike, walleye, bass, catfish, bullhead and a variety of pan fish. Events in and around the lake include fish tournaments, kids Fish ‘n Fun, Lake Days celebration and The Great Beaver Paddle Festival as well as being home to the nationally recognized Beaverland Must-Ski Water Shows.

The City of Fox Lake is located on the southeast shore of the lake where a city park with a boat landing provides recreational access. A town park with a boat landing provides access on the north side of the lake.

Fox Lake is heavily used for boating, water skiing, and fishing. Fox Lake drains toward Beaver Dam Lake via Mill Creek.

Lake Emily

Lake Emily is a shallow, fertile lake located in the extreme northwest corner of Dodge County. The lake provides a quality fishery primarily of perch, bluegills, largemouth bass, and northern pike and receives heavy usage year round. Much of the lakeshore is developed with cottages and homes, except for the west side which is still undeveloped.

A town-owned boat landing provides good fishing and boating access on the southern end of the lake.

Water Recreation Beaver Dam Lake, Fox Lake and nearby Lake Emily provide plenty of fishing, recreational boating, and non-motorized boating opportunities. The lakes are also busy during the winter months, as they are frequented by ice fisherman, snowmobilers, and visitors looking to get exercise by snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.

Wild Goose State Trail

Nitschke Mounds Park

The northwest area of Dodge County is also home to Derge Park. This Dodge County park provides campers a quiet lakeside facility that is situated on the west shoreline of Beaver Dam Lake. This campground is known for its ease of use for visitors that have campers and is a quieter setting. Derge Park has a boat ramp and a handicap canoe/kayak launch that offers visitors easy accessibility to Beaver Dam Lake. Visitors to Derge Park enjoy accessibility to urban conveniences and other visitor opportunities in Randolph, Fox Lake and Beaver Dam.

Adjacent to the west edge of the Horicon Marsh is the Wild Goose State Trail, this 34 mile compacted limestone trail is on an abandoned railroad grade. It traverses oak woodlots, farm fields, prairie remnants and streams as it runs north to south through Dodge and Fond Du Lac counties. The trail does accommodate a separate horse trail, stretching 14 miles.

In the winter the trail can be utilized for snowmobile and ATV use.

Adjacent to the Wild Goose State Trail and west of the Horicon Marsh is the Nitschke Mounds Park. This park contains 39 preserved animal effigy, conical, and linear mounds. A wood chipped trail along with interpretive signs provide visitors an educated experience to the mounds and the history behind them.

Waterways and Wildlife Areas The Southwest area of Dodge County can make you feel like you are miles away from urbanized life. This portion of Dodge County contains extensive miles of the Beaver Dam and Crawfish Rivers. These two rivers, along with other smaller waterways, provide excellent opportunities to experience rural and scenic areas of Dodge County by kayak or canoe. They are one of the best kept secrets in Dodge County.

In addition to the waterways running through this region, two wildlife areas have been established, the Mud Lake Wildlife Area and Waterloo Wildlife Areas. These two public areas provide great opportunities for nature enthusiast, as there are acres and acres of natural area to explore. There are also many fishing and hunting opportunities.

The Wild Goose State Trail runs directly through Juneau, providing great hiking and bicycling experiences. A separate horseback-riding trail runs alongside the trail for fourteen miles from Highway 60 north to Minnesota Junction. In the winter, snowmobilers and ATV riders can enjoy this scenic route also.

River Bend Park

Communities In the northeastern most areas of this portion of Dodge County are the villages of Brownsville, Lomira, and Theresa. These villages have provided residents the opportunity for quiet country living and easy accessibility to the Horicon Marsh and Theresa Marsh Wildlife Area. They offer a variety of activities for all interests. These communities also host significant employers in Dodge County.

Adjacent to the Horicon Marsh are Horicon and Mayville, though very close they each provide their own unique opportunities. Horicon is situated at the base of the Horicon Marsh, which provides a variety of accesses to the Marsh.

Many visitors enjoy taking guided tours of Horicon Marsh from downtown Horicon. They have five beautiful parks to picnic and play in and are situated on the Rock River. Visitors to the area will also enjoy the Horicon Aquatic Center, Saterlee Clark Historical Museum and the disc golf course at River Bend Park.

Only three miles northeast is Mayville, its historic downtown and friendly residents make it a very charming community. Explore the past as you visit the Mayville Limestone School Museum and the Hollenstein Wagon and Carriage Museum. Similar to other communities in Dodge County, Mayville has a waterway flowing through it, East Fork Rock River. Enjoy this sportsman and naturalist’s paradise where fishing, hunting and birding, exploring and hiking are all possibilities.

The Rock River Trail is a local initiative to establish a multi-use trail of recreational, scenic and historic interest and significance along the 320-mile river course through Wisconsin and Illinois. The Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center is a gem for Dodge County and a must see for any visitor. There are various activities available in the center, including the Explorium that gives visitors the unique opportunity to learn about the history of the Horicon Marsh and its path to achieving international significance. The Center hosts a variety of events throughout the year, giving people a very unique experience that many have come to love.

Gold Star Memorial Trail Horicon and Mayville are now linked by a 2.5 mile non-motorized recreational trail called the Gold Star Memorial Trail (GSMT).

The trail is of special significance, as it is a memorial to Wisconsin military service members who have been killed in action. The GSMT was completed in the fall of 2018 and will have a grand opening on June 1, 2019. The trailhead is at Theiler Park in Mayville and travels to the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitors Center, adjacent to the City of Horicon. This new trail will provide excellent opportunities for all ages to enjoy a safe non-motorized trail, that connects communities and the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center.

Experience The Horicon Marsh Area Get outdoors this year and experience the wildlife and many seasons of natural beauty at Horicon Marsh. The Horicon Marsh Parkway is a 50-mile auto tour route that follows state and county roadways around the marsh, passing through or near many local communities. There are also roads, hiking and biking trails throughout the property, and a canoe trail accessing the waters of the marsh.

Spring marks the return of mallard ducks,

coots, herons, egrets, sandhill cranes, purple martins, warblers, and numerous others. A “chorus” of frogs is sure to be heard throughout the marsh signaling that warmer weather is here.

The Horicon Marsh Bird Festival is held annually in May and offers many opportunities to view and photograph spring migrants and resident wildlife.

Fall is well known for the mass migration of birds (and visitors!) to the marsh - Canada geese, as well as thousands of ducks of many different species – mallards, wood ducks, pintails, wigeon, redheads, bufflehead, and ruddy ducks; as well as impressive numbers of staging sandhill cranes. Opportunities also exist to view whooping cranes. Although closed for waterfowl hunting, the Horicon National Wildlife Refuge is open for deer and small game hunting seasons in the fall. However there is waterfowl hunting in the State Wildlife Area.

Many educational programs and events are held marsh-wide throughout the season.

Winter is characterized as a frozen but peaceful time on the marsh and is also a good season for wildlife viewing. Eagles, owls, several species of hawks, muskrats, foxes and other wildlife, or evidence of, such as tracks or feathers, may be sighted when the entire marsh is open to snowshoeing, hiking, and cross country skiing (Dec. - Mar.). Snowy owls are a notable species to watch for during the winter months.

Summer brings nesting season

and warmer weather for hiking and bicycling around the marsh to view an array of bird species with their young. American white pelicans nest abundantly on the marsh during the summer and may be seen feeding in large groups – “herding” fish into shallower water for easier dining. Several fishing piers are also available at the marsh and make great places to spend relaxing summer afternoons.

The Wildlife Education Program focuses on the abundant wildlife resources of the marsh, their ecology and management. DNR educators rely on the diverse wildlife to develop a wide range of educational programs aimed at introducing and sharing our native wildlife with a broad audience.

Horicon Marsh Education & Visitor Center serves as both a destination and gateway for visitors to Horicon Marsh as well as providing for year-round educational opportunities.

More than 500,000 people visit Horicon Marsh annually to observe wildlife in a natural setting, creating a huge demand for interpretive services.

The facility has an auditorium, two classrooms, the Flyway Gift Shop, public viewing area, wildlife displays, a Children’s Discovery Area and other building amenities. Visitors may borrow binoculars, field guides, educational backpacks and snowshoes at no cost.

Visit the “Explorium”, where you will have the opportunity to travel through

time. Long before Horicon Marsh achieved international status as an important bird and wildlife area and a destination for outdoor recreation, glaciers carved a basin where a wetland would one day form. Today, guests of Horicon Marsh’s “Explorium” can get a glimpse of life at Horicon Marsh thousands of years before European settlement and witness how the current wetland came to be.

Videos and interactive displays greet guests at every turn, encouraging audiences of any age to learn more about the history and ecology of Horicon Marsh. A wooly mammoth replica that children are free to touch and climb represents wildlife that roamed the land during the Ice Age. Relics from the age of European settlement as well as modern hunting and trapping equipment illustrate the marsh’s popularity as a waterfowl hunting site. Games encourage visitors to learn about wildlife identification. An airboat simulator gives visitors a thrilling perspective on the management and conservation activities currently occurring on the marsh before heading out to enjoy it for themselves.

The Horicon National Wildlife Refuge Office and Visitor Center is operated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. It is located on the east side of the marsh just off Highway Z and offers exhibits on marsh history and wildlife; shopping for nature books and clothing in the Coot's Corner Gift Shop; and views of marsh wildlife. A large multi-purpose room is available to the public to reserve for business meetings. Educational programs on various topics of natural and cultural history are offered year-round for the public. Harnischfeger Park The southeast region of Dodge County is home to the largest Dodge County park, Harnischfeger Park. This 132 acre park is located along the Rock River in the Town of Lebanon. Access to the Rock River is available by an 800 foot boardwalk and a canoe/kayak launch. Canoe/kayak rentals are available to visitors, as well as camping and a clubhouse. There is always music in the air, with the Watertown Municipal Band playing seasonally. Watertown enjoys the privilege of being home base for The 1st Brigade Band, a nationally known Civil War era band which plays 19th century music on period instruments.

Because of its importance to wildlife, Horicon Marsh has been formally recognized as a Wetland of International Importance by the Ramsar Convention of the United Nations, is a “Globally Important Bird Area” and is a unit of the Ice Age Scientific Reserve. It has also been designated as one the “Seven Natural Wonders of Wisconsin” and is often referred to as the “Little Everglades of the North.”

Located in southeast Wisconsin, this vast wetland is only a one hour drive from Milwaukee and Madison. While the marsh in renowned for its migrant flocks of Canada geese, it is also home to more than 300 resident and migratory
