Rechek’s Food Pride

The Rechek’s have surrounded themselves with a management team that shares that common goal. Their managers have been with them an average of 20 years, including some who have 25+ years of service. Store Director Max Gritzmacher and his staff always strive to take care of customer needs. If you can’t find it, our motto is “We’ll try our hardest to get it for you.” Rechek’s also has Thrifty White Pharmacy and Horicon Bank, both located in the store. Check out Rechek’s web site at www.recheksfoodpride.com, or visit our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/recheks.

Manager – Jake Rechek

Grampa Rechek’s award winning sausage department features a large variety of fresh and smoked sausage products. All of Grampa Rechek’s sausage products are made with the finest ingredients and leanest cuts of meat. All products are produced in Rechek’s very own state inspected sausage kitchen. Their signature item is their brats. During peak season, over 25 varieties are manufactured, with free samples given out as the Brat of the Week each Friday. In addition to the brats, summer sausage, snack sticks, natural casing wieners, Polish sausage, smoked sausage, ring bologna, metwurst, potato sausage, breakfast links, Italian sausage and many other products are manufactured, smoked and cooked in Rechek’s state of the art facility. In 1995 their bratwurst was crowned the Grand Champion Bratwurst of Wisconsin. Since that time the sausage department has won over 20 state and national awards.

Dentistry of Wisconsin Meeting Your Expectations

Dentistry of Wisconsin has been helping their patients with dental health needs in the Waupun area since 2005 and in Beaver Dam since 2013 after purchasing the practice from Dr. Robert Oines. Both offices have Dr’s Katz and Metzger sharing their time between locations. At Dentistry of Wisconsin, we enjoy seeing patients with simple to complex needs. We are a family practice dedicated to providing excellence in dentistry to patients of all ages, including patients with extraordinary needs or challenging dental conditions. We love helping all of our patients achieve healthy, confident smiles. Dentistry of Wisconsin provides general, cosmetic and implant dentistry. These services are offered while providing you with the most advanced dental technology. The 3-D cone

beam x-ray is an integral part of Dentistry of Wisconsin. The cone-beam allows us to take a look at a full head x-ray in 3 dimensions used for a more complete diagnosis of implant placement, surgical extractions and root canal therapy procedures. CAD/CAM or CEREC dentistry allows us to provide our patients with one day crowns! With all of the features and technology at Dentistry of Wisconsin, referrals out of the office to a specialist are very limited. Our goal is to have you feel valued, listened to and befriended; and that each time you walk through the door you will feel like you have never had a better dental experience! Meeting your expectations every time you visit is very important to us!

Awarded Coveted 2014 Leapfrog Top Hospital Distinction

Beaver Dam Community Hospitals, Inc. (BDCH) has been named to The Leapfrog Group’s coveted annual list of Top Hospitals. An elite distinction awarded to hospitals nationwide for demonstrating excellence in hospital safety and quality through the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, the Leapfrog Top Hospital award is given to less than seven percent of all eligible hospitals. BDCH was the first rural community hospital in Wisconsin to receive this distinguished award. The awards were announced at Leapfrog’s Annual Meeting and Top Hospital Awards on December 2, in Washington, D.C. “Leapfrog’s Top Hospital award is widely acknowledged as one of the most prestigious distinctions any hospital can achieve in the United States. It recognizes institutions for their excellence in quality of care and patient safety, as well as their commitment to transparency. By achieving Top Hospital status, Beaver Dam Community Hospital has proven it’s a premier institution and deserves to be recognized for its dedication to the families and patients in Dodge County,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. BDCH was one of 94 Top Hospitals recognized nationally. The list includes: • 24 Top Rural Hospitals • 61 Top Urban Hospitals • Nine Top Children’s Hospitals “The Leapfrog Group’s Top Hospital Award reinforces that BDCH is one of the safest and highest quality hospitals in the country,” said

Kim Miller, FACHE, BDCH President & CEO. “It gives me incredible pleasure and pride to see the work of our physicians, providers and employees being recognized nationally. I want to thank our dedicated BDCH employees, physicians, and providers for working together so effectively to deliver the highest quality and safest care possible for every patient, resident and child, with each interaction. It is our journey together that resulted in BDCH being recognized as one of the safest hospitals in the country. Our patients and clients deserve only the very best and this recognition demonstrates that we are achieving this goal.” The Top Hospital selection is based on the results of The Leapfrog Group’s annual hospital survey, which measures hospitals’ performance on patient safety and quality, focusing on three critical areas of hospital care: how patients fare, resource use and management structures established to prevent errors. Performance across many areas of hospital care is considered in establishing the qualifications for the award, including rates for high-risk procedures and a hospital’s ability

to prevent medication errors. “I am incredibly proud of our staff and the way they approach the delivery of care for our patients,” said Mike Murphy, BDCH Chief Patient Care Officer. “The dedication they have for every one of our patients, residents and children as they walk through our doors each day is an inspiration, and one of

“Our region is blessed to have a health care organization like Beaver Dam Community Hospitals, Inc., that has displayed tremendous commitment and dedication to providing the best health care possible,” said Sue Sutter, BDCH Board of Directors. “As a member of the Board of Directors, I have been continually impressed by our board’s unity and focus on assuring BDCH delivers the highest quality care in the safest environment possible.” Beaver Dam Community Hospitals, Inc. is an independent, non-profit healthcare organization whose mission is to deliver excellence across a continuum of services to patients in the region of Dodge, Columbia and Fond du Lac Counties, Wisconsin. BDCH offers a comprehensive continuum of services to people of all ages, including primary and specialty care, obstetric and inpatient acute care, outpatient surgery and oncology services, rehabilitation, home care, hospice, long-term care, and day care for children. the main reasons we are recognized for our safety and quality.” The Top Hospital award is not given to a set number of hospitals, but rather, to all urban, rural and children’s hospitals that meet the high standards defined in each year’s Top Hospitals Methodology. Advance Physical Therapy & Sports Rehab, LLC Bringing You Back to Your Best!

ADVANCE PHYSICAL THERAPY & SPORTS REHAB, LLC was established by Jim and Karren Ko in a 800-sq ft. space in September 2009. In less than a year, they out grew that space and in August 2010, the clinic moved to their current location at 1626 N. Spring St. in Beaver Dam. In January 2011 the first addition to the staff was Jodi Speth, a licensed PTA. In November of the same year, they added Carie Koltz, a certified massage therapist. In January 2013, Laura Hess, DPT joined the team. She became certified in the LSVT- Big Program for Parkinson’s Disease in November of the same year allowing another specialty service to be provided by APTSR. Heather Whelan, DPT then joined the staff in June 2013. Later in 2013 we partnered with a home care company which gave us the ability provide PT services in patients homes. We then hired Joey Ganske, DPT and Jason Hacht, PTA to supply the necessary therapists to the home-car partnership. In April of 2014 we added our billing specialist, Gloria Hartwig. Also part of the team is Ashley Pasewald, who works in the office when she is on break from college, where she is studying to be a physical therapist. The facility is currently over 2,400 sq ft, having their latest

addition in 2012, with 4 private treatment rooms, a massage suite and a spacious gym area.

and body mechanics training, emphasizing prevention and maintenance, to ensure long-term effect in their patients’ lives.

APTSR offers treatments for various musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, sports and orthopedic conditions. While following specific post-surgical protocols for shoulder, neck, back, hip, knee and ankle/foot, they provide techniques and procedures that are backed up by research and case studies. They design individualized treatment programs for each patient, utilizing therapeutic exercises, manual therapy techniques, and treatment modalities in order to achieve progress in a timely manner.

APTSR is proud to offer the AlterG AntiGravityTreadmill, which is used to help patients with lower back, hip, knee and ankle/foot problems get back into walking, jogging and running, while minimizing the pain of training/rehab. The AlterG is also used to safely work with patients that have balance issues. The GameReady system is another service the clinic offers to help their patients with fast recovery from tissue, joint and muscle inflammation.

Conditions such as low back pain, sciatica, SI joint dysfunction, trochanteric bursitis, ilioibial band syndrome, patellofemoral syndrome, ACL dysfunction and ankle/ foot pain have been successfully treated through correction of the lower extremity biomechanical alignment. This is also key in preventing injuries in individuals who participate in sports and prolonged weightbearing activities. The team has also been successful in treating TMJ pain, headaches and neck pain. They also provide carry-over programs that may include home exercises

The lymphedema program includes manual lymphatic massage, bandaging, kinesiotaping techniques and compression garments to facilitate improved circulation. They give a simple home program to patients to encourage compliance and ensure proper treatment carryover. The wound care program utilizes proper debridement techniques and special wound dressings to treat post-traumatic, decubitus, venous, arterial, diabetic and post-surgical ulcers. The staff has also had very good success

Horicon Bank

The Natural Choice For 100 years, the Horicon Bank building at the “foot of the marsh” has stood tall on Lake Street in Horicon – encouraging the budding businesses of downtown, cheering on every town parade, and investing in our neighbors. This building, that once housed a post office, a Masonic lodge, and a public library all in addition to being a bank, also houses 100 years of local history inside its brick walls. Established in 1896, Horicon Bank was founded by Daniel Van Brunt, the inventor of the grain drill. Van Brunt’s manufacturing company was eventually sold to Deere & Company – now known as John Deere Horicon Works which continues operations just down the street from the bank. In 1915, Horicon Bank’s home office building was constructed on Lake Street and continues to be the center of the bank’s administration today. In 1961, the bank’s home office was completely remodeled. And in 2009, Horicon Bank President Fred F. Schwertfeger commissioned another remodel to restore original features to the building including the light posts bordering

the building’s front steps, the marble table once used for check writing that now displays community information, and the first deposit register from when the bank was founded in 1896. Just recently, the building went through another remodel – including new windows and trimming by Hometown Glass of Beaver Dam to return the outside to its original façade. But even a 100 year old dog can learn new tricks. Since the Bank’s history is closely tied to Horicon and the Horicon Marsh, the bank’s lobby reflects a close alignment between the two. A Canada goose, an annual visitor of the Marsh, is displayed in the Bank’s logo. In each office this logo is prominently featured in the center of an affectionately named “Weed Wall.” This wall, near the welcome desk of each office, is full of plants reminding visitors of the bank’s roots at the foot of the Marsh. Since opening the doors to its oldest building, Horicon Bank has grown from its home in Horicon to include thirteen additional offices across the state – including three in Beaver Dam.

Rainbow Hospice Care The Hospice Choice

We who live in southern Wisconsin are fortunate to have access to hospice providers offering specialized, high-quality end-of-life care. Not everyone does, and where hospice isn’t available, terminally ill patients and their families often miss out on valuable resources that could be of great benefit to them. Although most US hospices are based on a similar philosophy emphasizing comfort care rather than curative treatment, each hospice is unique. It’s important to understand some of the differentiating factors. First and foremost is whether the hospice is Medicare Certified, which ensures that it meets federal requirements for patient care and management. Rainbow Hospice Care has been Medicare Certified since it was founded 25 years ago, and we go way beyond what Medicare requires in honoring our promise to provide unparalleled care to residents living throughout the counties of Jefferson, southern Dodge, south-eastern Columbia, eastern Dane, northern Walworth and beyond. It’s also helpful to know that some hospices operate as part of a specific medical group or system, or have a certain religious affiliation. There are those too that are for-profit establishments that allow them to restrict the services they provide and to whom. Others like Rainbow Hospice Care—a community based, non-profit organization—operate independently and collaborate with other area healthcare partners to serve a broader, more diverse population.

Maybe the most important consideration is not so much what a hospice does, but how. When Rainbow Hospice Care is involved, patients, their families, and caregivers are all supported by teams of specially trained physicians, nurses, hospice aides, social workers, chaplains, grief counselors, other therapists, and volunteers. This holistic, integrated approach ensures that each individual has access to comprehensive physical, emotional, social, spiritual care tailored to his or her unique needs and wishes. Care teams provide expert pain and symptom management, assistance with personal cares, education, and ongoing guidance that allows patients and their loved ones to enjoy a higher quality of life while focusing on what’s most important to them throughout the end-of-life journey. Rainbow Hospice Care services are typically covered by Medicare, Medicaid and most private insurers. Benefits include planned visits, treatments, medicines, equipment, respite care, and more—including bereavement care for survivors. On-call staff members are available 24-7 to respond to urgent needs. Regardless of age, race, gender, faith, ethnicity, insurance coverage or economic status, we treat all of our patients and their loved ones with the same respect, kindness and concern. Care is never denied due to inability to pay. For more information, call (920) 674-6255 or visit www.rainbowhospicecare.org.

Moraine Park Technical College 2014 Momentum Carries into New Year

Moraine Park Technical College students are driven to accomplish great things, and 2014 was no exception. The College saw many achievements over the past year on the Beaver Dam campus, as well as within the College as a whole.

College’s campuses. The partnership between the student and professional chapters promotes the exchange of work-related experience of established business professionals with the theoretical academic perspective of students and faculty members through open forums and information exchanges. Another stellar accomplishment for Moraine Park was the national board exam pass rates achieved by Moraine Park’s health care students. On their first attempt, students from the 2013-14 graduating classes surpassed national pass rate averages in the nursing, health information technology, medical laboratory technician, respiratory therapist and surgical technology programs.

Students majoring in Human Resources, Leadership Development and Business formed a Student Chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), a national organization devoted to professional development within the field of human resources. Moraine Park’s chapter is affiliated with Dodge County SHRM, a local professional chapter, and is comprised of 21 students from all three of the

On the Moraine Park alumni front, Lisa Karst, from the Town of Burnett, was named Moraine Park’s 2014 Distinguished Alumnus. Karst is the assistant vice president/regional operations leader at National Exchange Bank & Trust in Beaver Dam and insists her Moraine Park learning experiences enlivened her 25-year career in the financial services industry. Karst holds a number of Moraine Park certificates, including Principles of Management, 2001; Organizational Management, 2007; and Human Resources Development, 2009. She earned her associate of applied science degree in Leadership Development from Moraine Park in 2012. Moraine Park also saw a recent leadership change, as the District Board named Bonnie

Baerwald, vice president of finance and administrative services, the College’s new interim president. Baerwald takes over for former president Sheila Ruhland, who accepted a presidency position at Tacoma Community College in Tacoma, Wash. Baerwald has been with Moraine Park since 1993, joining the College as senior accountant. Over the years, she has served as financial services manager and vice president of financial management and, in 2007, was named vice president of finance and administrative services. Over the years, Baerwald has provided direction to the administration regarding fiscal and facility-related operations and has played a key role in coordination of an exciting multi-faceted construction project that began in June 2014 on the Fond du Lac Campus. Phase one of the project, which is expected to be complete in Spring 2015, will reveal a new Student Services Center that houses enrollment services and offices for counseling, advising and veteran services along with a new main entrance. The second phase of the project involves extensive remodeling to areas adjacent to the new addition. The remodeled space will be utilized by departments that collaborate closely with student services, including diversity relations, student life, registrar and financial aid. In addition, the Fond du Lac campus moved the

Emergency Medical Technician program into a newly remodeled space featuring a state-of-theart simulation lab and repurposed ambulance to provide real-world experiences for students. The ability for open-observation training enhances interaction with the instructor and provides opportunities for students to learn from each other. The Daily Citizen Dodge County’s News Source for 167 Years Ken Thomas Assistant Editor A newsboy was standing on the corner with a stack of papers yelling, “Read all about it. Fifty people swindled! Fifty people swindled!” Curious, a man walked over, bought a paper and checked the front page. Finding nothing about the topic, the man said. “There’s nothing in here about 50 people being swindled.” The newsboy ignored him and went on, calling out, “Read all about it. Fifty-one people swindled!” It’s tough having 15,000 critics, but that’s what employees at the Daily Citizen face 24 hours a day, seven days a week. And despite the critics, the goal had always been the same; to cover the news accurately and in a timely fashion for the readers. The history of the newspapers began early in Beaver Dam, with the first weekly newspaper published in 1848. The “Weekly Badger” was housed in a building near the first dam, which had just been built at the site of the current dam, near the old cotton mill on Madison Street.

The Badger was followed by about a dozen other enterprises until the paper’s great, great grandfather, the weekly “Dodge County Citizen” was established in 1857. Eventually the operation was moved to the Concert Hall building on Front Street (now Gergen, Gergen and Pretto Law Offices). A recent tour of the building discovered that those rooms on the second floor remain virtually untouched from the days when the paper was housed there. Job printing was also done there, making it a thriving business on Beaver Dam’s main thoroughfare. Father and son Edgar Eugene and Harry Hall Parker purchased the enterprise in 1910. They inaugurated the area’s first daily paper, the Beaver Dam Daily Citizen, on February 20, 1911. At that time there were 278 paid subscriptions. With new demands for space and equipment the Parkers set up operations in a new building at 211 S. Spring St. That was in 1917. A number of changes and improvements ensued, and the enterprise eventually passed on to H.H. Parker’s son, Kenneth.

The next major visible change came in 1971, when the entire operation was moved into the former Luken Lumber Company building at 211 S. Spring St. It may be little known, but that land was purchased by the Parker family in 1868, and was owned by them until 1908. It was somehow providential, then, that the newspaper should move there as part of the city’s eastward expansion. A major change in operation came in 1970, when Kenneth Parker’s son-in-law, James Conley, bought the company. Conley made a number of changes to keep up with the ever changing technology of printing. The new facility provided room to grow and a place for the presses, that rolled almost non-stop, to produce the many publications that the company had grown to include. Under Conley’s leadership, publications such as the Columbus Journal-Republican, Columbus Shopping Reminder, Waupun Leader News, Waupun Reminder, Tri County, Mayville Shoppers View, Markesan Herald and Markesan Marketeer were either added or incorporated into the Daily Citizen family.

Over time Conley began to acquire newspapers in suburban Milwaukee and north shore locations, which became his focus with the sale of the Daily Citizen and its Dodge County publications to Lee Enterprises in 2002. Printing operations were moved to Portage and Madison with local management. Association with Lee’s Madison area publications, and publications across the United States, insure that the Daily Citizen will continue for years to come. For nearly 97 years, dedicated employees have continued the tradition that began so long ago. They are proud to be a part of the area business community, and to meet the demands of thousands of bosses every day the paper arrives at their homes or is viewed at www.citizenol.com. Ken Thomas Assistant Editor 920-356-6759 kthomas@capitalnewspapers.com

Daily Citizen is Reaching People in New Ways The Daily Citizen has a unique history of service to the community and even as the staff adapts to rapidly changing technology and markets, that tradition remains the bedrock. No one else has dedicated the resources the Daily Citizen has committed to telling the stories and news of Dodge County. We cover it more rapidly and more thoroughly than any other media. The flagship printed newspaper delivers not just the news, but a market for our advertisers. It provides opportunities, entertainment and information in a format that is time-tested and economical. But that staff is not resting on laurels. Instead, the Daily Citizen staff is committed to making effective use of the tools available. Carpenter’s didn’t throw out hammers because nail guns were invented. Instead, we recognize that telling a story in different ways, reaches different audiences and allows more depth to be provided to everyone. We have long provided online photo galleries and interactive news graphics as well as advertising for local busi-

nesses at wiscnews.com/bdc. We provide video of breaking news as well as features that you can’t find anywhere else.

The Daily Citizen updates its website throughout the day and into the evening. It is why we have close to 1 million page

views a month. The Daily Citizen staff uses Twitter and Facebook to provide alerts to developing stories or help people get through their day. We will soon have apps available putting the Daily Citizen in easy reach on your phone.

Your Local News, Your Way

The Daily Citizen’s commitment to the community means that the staff continues to explore how it can reach people in new and exciting ways – it could mean that someday people will choose their news or we will find more ways to tell a story. It certainly will mean that the Daily Citizen will remain committed to providing the most timely, accurate and comprehensive coverage.

How much life insurance is enough?

financial needs and goals.

One of the most common questions when purchasing life insurance is, “How much is enough?” The answer lies in what’s called a needs analysis. A needs analysis examines your specific financial and personal situation to help determine the type and amount of life insurance that will best satisfy your needs.

A needs analysis will seek answers to questions like: What are my family’s immediate and future income needs? How much supplemental income will they need to meet expenses if I were to die tomorrow? And how much can I afford to pay in premium?

One of the first decisions you will have to make when purchasing life insurance is whether to choose term or permanent coverage. Term life insurance can offer coverage from one year to 30 years or longer, and is often purchased to provide funds for financial obligations such as a mortgage or a child’s tuition in case the insured dies. Permanent life insurance, which includes whole life policies, generally provides coverage throughout a person’s life. Unlike term insurance, a permanent life policy may gradually accumulate a cash value, which you may be able to borrow against while the policy is still active or cash in upon surrender of the policy. Determining the right amount of coverage requires a solid understanding of all your policy options as well as your

If you have not purchased life insurance yet, consider sitting down with an insurance agent to discuss your situation and options. If you already have a policy, discuss with your agent if it’s still appropriate for your present situation and any lifestyle changes that may be on the horizon. Our goal is to exceed our client’s expectations. Our mission is to provide quality insurance services, with the personal touch and at an economical price, to the rural and small urban communities and farms in our area. Town Mutuals were born out of necessity. In the mid to late 1800s, farmers could not afford to purchase property insurance on their residence, personal property and outbuildings due to the high premiums charged. Stock insurance companies felt that if a farm fire started, it would probably be a total loss due to the amount of time it took the fire department to arrive on the scene. It was for this reason they were reluctant to insure farm property. To form a company, 25 farmers were needed to insure each other’s losses. During this period, many local insurance companies started up throughout Wisconsin. At one time, there were over 300 companies. They were named Town Mutuals owned by the policyholders of the company. They only insured for fire coverage. The idea of ‘neighbor insuring neighbor’ was born. These community founded companies were organized and continue to operate under the supervision of a Board of Directors elected by the

policyholders. Officers know many of the policyholders personally; as they spend their everyday lives among the policyholders. They are friends and neighbors. They attend the same churches, their problems are similar, and their interests are the same. Ramona Monacelli is the company manager. The office staff consists of Ramona, Marlys Lemmenes in book-keeping, Cheryl Ziemke as underwriter, and Rose Rentmeester as customer service agent for our Rosendale Insurance Agency, LLC. Flyway Mutual Insurance Company offers insurance needs for Farm, Home, Mobile Home, Renters, and Fire. The agency offers Auto and Personal Umbrella. Currently they service policyholders in twelve counties in the State of Wisconsin: Adams, Columbia, Dodge, Fond du Lac, Green Lake, Jefferson, Marquette, Sheboygan, Washington, Waukesha, Waushara, and Winnebago. The Rosendale Insurance Agency, LLC was acquired in the last merger. The agency offers Auto and Personal Umbrella. The office staff is each licensed to quote your insurance needs.

Waupun Area School District Do the Math: School + Business = Partnerships that Positively Impact All Involved! When asked about business partnerships, Tari Costello, Waupun Area High School Agricultural Education Instructor/FFA Advisor, easily named forty-five businesses— from Animart to the Animal Shelter, Brandon Meats to Boyd’s Tool Chest, Culver’s to Daane Dairy, End of the Trail to Waupun Feed & Seed, NAPA to Waupun Equipment, and so on from A to Z. She admittedly notes, “This list was off the top of my head and is by no means a complete account of all the significant support we [the Agriculture and Technology Education Departments] receive.” To teachers like Costello, reaching out to the community and local businesses for their expertise and to serve as an extension of the classroom is second nature. “There’s no question we want to collaborate out in the community. These businesses have served as schoolto-work sites, provided tours, and financial support, plus have given their time and talent as classroom guest presenters and FFA Speaking Contests judges. We wouldn’t be able to do what we do in our program without them,” explains Costello. Having a strong relationship with businesses benefits not only Costello and her district col-

leagues as they absorb industry knowledge from these experts and stay abreast of workforce needs, but their students benefit too receiving opportunities for career exploration and a richer real-world learning experience. The positive outcomes achieved don’t stop at the school door though. These powerful partnerships and collaborative efforts extend back to the businesses and ripple out into the community. This is evident in the many valuable partnerships Costello has initiated and nurtured throughout her teaching career. Costello identified a variety of businesses that produce “win-win situations” for both the school district and the business. Like suggesting you have a “favorite child,” she hesitated to highlight one partner over another. That being said, one stand-out partnership worth noting involves Ballweg Implement, Inc. This local implement dealer, nearing 40 years in business, has been a huge supporter to the high school agriculture department and FFA program as they’ve done almost anything and everything for the program—welcome schoolto-work students, sponsor agriculture and FFA programs/events, conduct classroom presentations, host business tours, actively participate

at the FFA Banquet, served as a landscape class customer site, and much more. The back and forth between the school district and Ballweg has been blossoming for years. In fact, Ballweg’s current office manager, Brittany VandeZande, is a product of the agriculture education program and as a high school senior participated in school-to-work at, you guessed it, Ballweg Implement, Inc. After high school, Brittany went to college and then returned to Waupun where she became a full-time employee at Ballweg. Now on the other side of the partnership, Brittany conducts business tours for Costello’s students and is an active member of the Waupun FFA Alumni giving back to the organization and program that gave her much. Yet another positive back and forth scenario involved the high school’s advanced landscaping class completing a two-phase project at Ballweg. During Phase I, Ryan Seichter and his advanced landscaping class prepped the base and set a retaining wall where Ballweg wanted to showcase equipment near the entrance to their business. After seeing the laborious approach to cutting the paver blocks for this project, Ballweg donated a Stihl Concrete Saw

for the department so students would have it available to use as they completed not only Ballweg’s, but future projects. VandeZande notes, “The saw was a valuable tool you’d see on an industry worksite; something that class needed to complete their work here, as well as residential landscape projects. It just made sense for them to experience the work as it would be done in the real world.” In Phase II, Seichter and his students returned to Ballweg to install the patio pavers for the walking area. The Waupun Difference is alive and well as a result of powerful partnerships like that between Ballweg Implement, Inc. and the high school agriculture department. Moving forward with a rigorous academy-based approach to college and career readiness at the junior/senior high, the Waupun Area School District looks forward to continued collaboration with current business partners and pursuing new connections with community members and business leaders. The equation for future success is simple: School + Business = Partnerships that positively impact all involved - our students and the community as a whole!

Home Contractors & Suppy, Inc. Home Contractors & Supply, Inc. of Waupun was established and has been family owned since 1959. There have been many changes during their 55 years in business, like their move to the west end of Waupun six years ago. While some things have changed, others have stayed the same. Home Contractors still carries lumber, plywood, wafer board, insulation, drywall, pine and oak boards and many other products. While they do not stock all the products that they did at their previous location, they do have many of them and can order whatever is needed for your building needs. Customers can still stop in or call to special order cabinets, windows, doors, vinyl siding, shingles, garage doors, vinyl decking and more. They also still fix windows, screens and can sharpen saw blades. The Cabinet and Countertop Division manufactures custom laminate counter tops and cabinets at their

facility for home and business use. Also offered are acrylic, stainless steel and quartz undermount sinks for installation in laminate counter tops. You can get the look of a solid surface counter top at a fraction of the cost. There are hundreds of laminate samples to browse through and many counter top styles to choose from. They also offer Silestone, and several other solid surface tops for kitchen or bath. In an effort to further serve their customers, they continue to operate a construction crew. The crew specializes in many areas of construction including garage door replacement and repair, kitchen and bath remodeling, decks, additions, replacement windows, as well as flat roofing jobs. These hands turn the wrenches From start to finish They clean the pieces and feel their merit

How shopping locally can help you and your community Today’s consumers have more shopping options at their disposal than they did in years past. Though the Internet may put the world at one’s fingertips, more and more shoppers are discovering that buying locally makes for a superior shopping experience. The benefits associated with shopping locally are many, and the following are just a few reasons why shoppers may want to look no further than their own communities when planning their next shopping excursions.

Keeps money in the local economy

Locally-owned businesses often put a larger share of their revenue back into their communities. Small business owners may be more inclined to employ local residents, giving more people in the community solid employment. Business owners may reach out and support other neighborhood efforts, such as fundraising initiatives for charities and schools. By shopping at local stores, you have a hand in supporting these efforts as well.

Save money

When factoring in travel time and the cost of fuel, shopping locally makes more sense than driving to a faraway mall. In addition, repeat customers who establish a rapport with a local business owner may find that such owners are more inclined to price match or work with loyal customers to find lower prices through suppliers.

Diversify your home and lifestyle

These hands rebuild the engine and install the parts Form the metal, and tighten the bolts

Shoppers who prefer more unique styles may find local businesses cater to their needs better than large chain stores. Larger retailers offer the same products to customers regardless of where those customers live, so a person in California may be decorating his or her home with the same furnishings as a person in North Carolina. But local shops tend to produce more unique items that are not available nationwide.

Small businesses are an essential element to the country’s economic growth. By shopping locally, consumers are showing their support for this important segment of the national economy.

Promote entrepreneurship

Help establish local pride

Independent shops contribute to the fabric of a community and what makes it special and unique. Tourists and other visitors will be much more inclined to remember a local shop rather than a big chain in a particular neighborhood. When travelers want to get a feel for a community, they seek out small, local stores that are much more likely to stock a high percentage of locallysourced goods.

Private and public sector businesses tend to gravitate around anchor stores. Should a local store be successful, banks, restaurants, salons, and other businesses may move in as well. Shopping locally benefits consumers in various ways, many of which contribute to a healthy local economy.

The Kingston House is a come as you are type of place. All are welcome. We hope to see you there soon!

This agency was originally established in 1956 by Dan’s father Don DeYoung, who had his office in a converted area of the two car garage next to his home in Friesland. At that time it was called DeYoung Insurance Service and was an Independent Insurance Agency representing many different companies.

Dan and his wife Maxine joined the agency in 1996

The expansive room on the third floor housed a ballroom with a large stage on one end. Remnants of a time long gone by still speak to those who visit the third floor of The Kingston House. The walls are filled with the signatures and advertisements of entertainers that spent time at the supper club. Today, The Kingston House serves as a great Wisconsin supper club, and has done so for over 60 years. In 2014, The Kingston House was purchased by two best friends, Brian Cantwell and Jeremy Endres, to uphold the values that have made this supper club one of the most treasured gathering places for great food, family, friends and fun.

They chose The Kingston House because they fell in love with it at first sight. They looked at a lot of different supper clubs prior to selecting this one. As soon as they saw a picture of it, they could tell it was perfect — quaint, charming, with lots of character and history. Their mission is to keep the tradition of the supper club alive. There’s over 150 years of history in The Kingston House, and they’re so excited to bring this tradition back to the community where it belongs. They believe a supper club should be part of the community, not just ancillary. It’s a place for the community to gather for meetings, family events, or a night with friends. Plus the food is really good! Authentic old fashioneds, comfort food, simple food, moderate prices, all buffet style. Dishes like prime rib, a great fish fry — the staples you’d expect from a great supper club.

Networking tips for working professionals Networking plays an integral role in professional growth. Men and women who can nurture relationships within their fields are more likely to be in tune with what’s going on in their professions, and a network of fellow professionals can help men and women advance their careers. · Recognize the benefits of networking. Networking not only benefits individuals but also the companies those individuals own or work for. While many people view networking as a means to one day finding a new job, networking is much more than that. When you foster a professional relationship, the other person in that relationship will be quick to think of you when they need a given service or are asked for a referral. That can benefit business owners’ bottom lines, but even men and women who don’t own a business can benefit, as their bosses will no doubt recognize the role they played in bringing in new business. · Make networking a priority. Once professionals recognize that networking is about more than just building a web of contacts who can help them find their next job, they can begin to prioritize networking so it can help them in their existing jobs. Make an effort to keep in touch with current and previous clients and any other contacts made over the years. Something as simple as an email to catch up or an inquiry to see if there’s anything fellow professionals need will help you stay on their minds, which can help you bring in new business or learn about new opportunities down the road. Maintaining and building a professional network does not always require a lot of work, as even seemingly small gestures can pay big dividends if men and women prioritize such efforts. · Revisit your network from time to time. A network is only beneficial if it remains current. Keep track of the professionals in your network so you know when and where to reach them should you need to do so. A professional networking site such as LinkedIn is a great way to stay on top of what your network is up to, and such a site also is a valuable tool when you want to update your network with any new information about yourself. Revisit your network a few times each year, updating with any new information so you aren’t left scrambling for email addresses or phone numbers when the time comes to get back in touch with your contacts. · Avoid networking only when you need something. You can likely name a few of your fellow professionals who only seem to contact you when they want something. You don’t want to earn a similar reputation among your own contacts, so don’t forget to make periodic contact with your colleagues even when you don’t need anything. A simple email to catch up and to offer some unsolicited help if any is needed can be enough to prevent you from earning a reputation as a me-first contact and put you in a positive light that can benefit you throughout your career. Networking can easily be seen in a negative light. But professionals who network the right way will find that their efforts pay dividends for themselves, their companies and even their professional colleagues.

Mayville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center

...helping people live better

Comprehensive Services “I have been practicing Family Medicine since 1980, and settled my practice in Mayville over a decade ago. Traditionally, family practice meant following a patient from birth through their entire lifespan; including long-term care. As healthcare policies have changed in recent years, long-term care has become more of a specialty, and with my experience and expertise, becoming a Medical Director of a Longterm Care facility was a natural move for me. My involvement as the Medical Director of Mayville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center was actually what led me to join the American Medical Directors Association (AMDA) - Dedicated to Long Term Care Medicine, and I have been committed ever since. I think Mayville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center is a wonderful resource for people who live here. I like the ability to have a facility like this available for my patients; and Agnesian HealthCare patients in general. The convenience is really key for patients and their families and when you have a place that delivers quality care; that is what you want. The staff is what makes that happen.“

Physical therapists are highly trained in movement assessment and screening. Through the use of various movement tests, joint mobility assessment, and flexiblilty and strength testing, a PT can identify what body parts are moving well, and what areas are the true culprits of dysfuction and pain. This can often be an area that is quite distant from where symptoms are being felt. Through the use of specific, targeted manual therapy, modalities and exercise prescription, an individualized treatment program is developed for each client. This is then progressed appropriately as the dysfunctional area improves and the body as a whole is moving well again. Back In Action Rehabilitation is proud to be entering it’s 15th year of serving the rehab needs of the local communities. Our treating staff consists of two physical therapists, a physical therapy assistant, and an exercise assistant. We continue to provide advanced and effective treatment for a variety of conditions, including back and neck pain, operative & non-operative elbow/shoulder/hip/knee/ankle injuries, work or sport-related injuries, balance/vertigo problems, and a variety of other conditions. In an effort to provide comprehensive and affordable care, Back In Action Rehab offers a variety of educational and treatment services. -During our FREE INJURY SCREENING, a therapist will gather a history of your recent injury or chronic/nagging pain and perform a brief evaluation to help determine what may be the cause of your symptoms. Based on the findings, we will then provide options for further treatment whether it be initiating physical therapy care, showing you ways to manage the condition on

your own, or recommending a referral to a doctor for further evaluation. -If you have an injury that will require surgery, such as a rotator cuff repair or a hip or knee replacement, please contact us to take advantage of our FREE PREOPERATIVE CONSULT. This is designed to provide you with preliminary information regarding your upcoming surgical procedure and education regarding the rehab process, including expected timeframes for healing and return to work/sport. With your surgeon’s permission, we can even show you a home exercise program that can be started prior to surgery that may help speed your recovery afterwards. -Finally, Back In Action periodically offers FREE INFORMATIONAL SESSIONS that are open to the community. These will address a variety of topics, such as rotator cuff problems, common causes of and ways to avoid back pain, fall prevention/balance disorders and how physical therapy can help with these problems. Watch for dates for these sessions in upcoming ads, or contact our office for more information. Back In Action Rehab offers extended appointment hours including early morning and late evening hours, and most times can offer an initial appointment within 3 days of contact. We will make every effort to be sure you are treated by the same therapist at each treatment to ensure quality and continuity of care. We are an accepted provider for over 25 insurances. Please contact our office at 920-387-9000 with questions about any of the above programs or log on to www. BackInActionRehab.com for more information.

Duffy Grain, Inc. Duffy Bros., Inc was established in 1928. The business focused on hauling milk for area farmers, and later branched out into livestock hauling. Over time, the focus of the business shifted toward operating as a grain elevator to help local cash crop farmers find a market for their grain. Duffy Grain, Inc. was established in 1976. In 2002, a second location was built near Marshall to reach new markets by rail. Duffy Grain is licensed by the state of Wisconsin as a grain dealer and by the federal government as a grain warehouse keeper. We offer our customers several marketing options including forward price contracting, minimum price contracts, deferred price contracts and grain storage. We also offer grain drying and we operate a fleet of trucks that allow us to offer grain-hauling services to our customers. Between our

Columbus and Marshall locations, we have over 4.5 million bushels of storage space, which allows us to be in the grain receiving and shipping business year around, serving as a link between grain producer and end user. We are a price neutral business, so we can meet the needs of producers and end users in a way that makes both more profitable. Our main goal is to help farmers consistently make a profit. Profitable farming brings more money from the market into our community making it a stronger community. We are a family owned independent alternative for grain producers. We take a lot of pride in providing producers with a good market and top-notch service.

Wise Guy’s Auto Repair Wise Guys can take care of your automotive repair needs from oil changes to engine overhauls. Wise Guy’s was formed in 2012 by David Weisman. Dave opened Wise Guys because he felt that customers needed an automotive repair shop that they could come to with a knowledgeable technician who they could trust. Treating customers with respect and honesty is something he strongly believes in and feels that each and every customer deserves! Dave said that “he never wanted to be a millionaire. He just wants to offer a quality product and trustworthy service. “ No repair is too small or too large and any make or model is welcomed into his shop. Wise Guys can also service your small engine repairs or tune-ups for snowmobiles, ATV’s, lawn mowers, snow blowers and chain saws. Dave attended MATC and received an associate’s degree as an Automotive Technician. He worked at a repair shop while going to school, then worked at a dealership in Madison for over 8 years where he received certification from Ford and Kia, hybrid trained, air conditioning certified along with many AC Delco and NAPA Certifications. He also has been a certified ASE Master Mechanic since 2003. Dave holds many other certifications and said he will never stop wanting to learn about new automotive technology. In October of 2013 Wise Guy’s received BBB Accreditation. The Better Business Bureau determined that Wise Guy’s Auto Repair, LLC. met the BBB accreditation standards, which include a commitment to make a good faith effort to resolve any consumer complaints.

Wise Guy’s appreciates and is dedicated to their customers. Here are what a few customers had to say… Laura R. - Totally honest, incredibly nice, high-quality work, very reasonable prices. I just can’t say enough positive things about Wise Guy’s. I feel like a cheerleader here, but it’s all true. There are other guys out there that will smile a lot and make you laugh and say all the right things, then screw you over. Time and time again, Dave has proven that he’s not one of those guys. This world is full of so many jerks who just pretend to be good people, and they get rich and famous. Here Dave is, in a small town on a quiet street, actually BEING a good person and it breaks my heart a little that he’s not better off. You should give him your business. You will not regret it. Sabrina R. - Extremely awesome service!! Fred H. - Going north to snowmobile with my wife and the in-laws, one of my trailer tires came off and in the process sheared off all of the bolts. I called all over Columbus, but everyone was busy. Fearing a ruined weekend, we kept at it and found Dave at Wise Guy’s Auto Repair. He got my Suburban and trailer into his large shop promptly. He got replacement bolts from the local NAPA, but they were for a car and were not long enough. His father had some out at his farm. He had me back on the road in less than 2 hours saving the weekend. THANK YOU!!!!!!! The place was immaculate and the bathroom was cleaner than most of the bathrooms in the hotels I stay in snowmobiling!! He had me over the barrel, but was extremely fair in his charge. This is one awesome and trustworthy mechanic!

Rubert Chiropractic A healthy body is the most vital asset a person has and our goal is to help each patient achieve that through our chiropractic skills and knowledge.

In 1997, Rubert Chiropractic opened for business. Dr. Jill Rubert after practicing in Madison for 4 years, decided to come back and practice in her hometown of Fall River. Now 18 years later, Rubert Chiropractic has 4 chiropractors, six personnel, two massage therapists and presently three locations. Both of Jill’s siblings, Dr. Sara Rubert and Dr. Paul Rubert, joined the practice and even opened two more practices located in Beaver Dam and Hustisford. Two years ago, Dr. Jordan Kluewer joined the team at the Hustiford and Beaver Dam locations. Drs. Jill, Paul, Sara and Jordan all received their doctorates at Northwestern Health Science University in Bloomington, MN. They continue to attend numerous seminars to learn the latest research and practices for better health and nutrition. Drs. Jill, Sara, and Paul were born and raised in Fall River. They each have two children ranging in ages from 5-17, which keeps them busy when they are not at their practices. Dr. Jordan, the newest addition to practices, is a sports enthusiast and continues to participate in sports on his off time. Having kids has enforced how much they like treating whole families and all age groups. “Each age has its own unique physical challenges.” states Dr. Jill. “We are interested in treating infants that may have colic or ear infections, to teens and adults for sports injuries, to adults and seniors with everyday physical stressors.” Whether the injuries are new or old, the doctors are eager to find ways to treat and heal them. The most common service provided by the chiropractors is the chiropractic adjustment. This is a procedure where the doctor gently lines up the vertebrae with their hands to correct misalignments and restore neurological function to the body. Vertebrae which are out of alignment can cause a number of health problems including back and neck pain, headaches, extremity (shoulder, wrist, hand, hip,

knee, ankle and foot) pain, carpel tunnel symptoms, sinus congestion and digestion symptoms to name a few. The doctors look at the whole body and lifestyle. They try to figure out what daily activities might be contributing to a patient’s chronic conditions and help them find ways to alter postures or give helpful stretches and exercises to strengthen their bodies to compensate. At Rubert Chiropractic, the doctors are certified in nutrition and help advise their patients on diet and nutritional supplements that not only can make them feel better but also help with inflammation and pain naturally. Other services the doctors provide is consultation on orthotics (arch supports), and therapies for soft tissue injuries. Rubert Chiropractic carries Foot Levelers which are orthotics that are custom built to the patient’s foot to ensure proper fit and alignment of the foot. In addition, the doctors offer cold laser, interferential muscle stimulation and ultrasound. The latest technology to be added to the Fall River office is digital x-ray onsite. The doctors are able to take x-rays, email or give copies on a disc, immediately. The doctors have found this a useful and much more efficient way to create, view and share a patient x-ray compared to film x-rays. The doctors state, “Getting up every morning without pain and feeling energetic should be normal. It may require commitment and change but it can be achieved. A healthy body is the most vital asset a person has and our goal is to help each patient achieve that through our chiropractic skills and knowledge.” The three locations have convenient hours with evening and some Saturdays in Fall River. New Patients are always welcomed. Their friendly staff is eager to answer any questions you may have. Please view our ad for location addresses and phone numbers. Let Rubert Chiropractic help you on your journey to better health.

Did you know? Search engine optimization, or SEO, is a key component of online marketing. Although it’s widely regarded as vital to a business’ marketing efforts, the concept of SEO can be confusing. SEO involves tailoring a website so that it pops up on search engine results more readily and at a higher place in the long list of pages that turn up. There are databases that list the most common search terms people use when browsing the Internet. Web pages that are built around the words and phrases commonly used, not just in the meta keywords tag of the site, but within the important parts of the pages themselves, can achieve a better ranking. Additionally, websites that are linked to by other sites generate higher rankings in terms of importance and where search engines place them in search lists. If SEO remains a mystery, businesses can employ marketing firms and businesses that specialize in SEO to make recommendations on redesigning a website to generate more consumertraffic

Columbus Antique Mall & Museum Supporting the arts in Columbus – the ‘Redbud Tree City of Wisconsin’

The Columbus City Hall auditorium renovation plans have always been of interest to Daniel Amato along with his wife Rose, owners and operators of the Columbus Antique Mall since 1983. In 1976, Amato – then a city council member – and other council members, in preparation for the United States bicentennial celebration, had the Columbus City Hall, built in 1892, sandblasted for the celebration. With many attempts being made in the past by various groups, the city hall auditorium has not been refurbished to date, but there are current plans being made by the newly formed Broadway Theater group to revitalize this old theater.

School, who now resides in Milwaukee. The pastels are on display in the Columbus Antique Mall & Museum lounge area for everyone to enjoy.

Amato was the president of the 1992 City of Columbus Quincentennial Celebration (1492 to 1992), which was held on Columbus Day. Columbus Day programs were previously held in the auditorium from 1987 to 1995.

The Christopher Columbus Museum is located inside the antique mall and includes a comprehensive educational display of more than 2,000 quality souvenir types, making it an active, expanding world-class display from Chicago’s 1893 World’s Columbian Expo (World’s Fair). It contains 3000 square feet of exhibit, 300 running feet wall of space and 80 display cases of comprehensive subject matter honoring 500 years of the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus.

Also, on display in the lounge are Christopher Columbus Capodimonte Porcelain statue groupings from Amato’s collection, dated 1990, by artist Luciano Cazzola and 1992 Cortese (deceased) groupings, a Dale Chihuly 212 violet Persian pair from his gallery at Aria, Las Vegas, Nev. Also on display are fourteen 40-inch-by-60-inch black and white, color enlarged photos taken by Amato on their travels in the “Footsteps of Columbus.” The Amatos have visited 65 countries throughout the world since 1987.

These various events that Amato was involved in have inspired him to commission the nowcompleted and displayed “Life Cycle of the Columbus Red Bud Tree.” These eight pastel chalks were commissioned in 2006 with Anne Klein, art instructor at Wisconsin Dells High
