KEWAUNEE, Wis. – Agriculture is Kewaunee County’s bread and butter. Farmers own and manage 176,735 acres or 81 percent of the land in the 2017 Farm Technology Days’ host county. Almost 21 percent of the county’s workforce is employed in agriculture – 2,058 jobs. And agriculture accounts for about $424 million in economic activity, almost 25 percent of the county’s total. Thus it’s easy to see why Kewaunee County is so fired up to host one of the largest outdoor farm shows in the country. Alongside host farmers Randy and Renee Ebert, at the heart of 2017 Wisconsin Farm Technology Days is Aerica Bjurstrom, the show’s executive secretary. Bjurstrom has been the University of Wisconsin-Extension agricultural agent in Kewaunee County for more than 10 years. Kewaunee County folks Aerica have been planning for the Bjurstrom event for three years, but Bjurstrom said it’s been a five-year experience for her. She started in 2012 aggressively pursuing the goal of bringing the show to the northeast-Wisconsin county on the shores of Lake Michigan. Host-farmer Randy Ebert was enthusiastic from the getgo, Bjurstrom said, even before Kewaunee County had formally applied as a county to host the big event. “A lot of people got on board pretty quick with my crazy idea,” said Bjurstrom. “It really has been the most rewarding professional and personal experience I’ve had.” She said agriculture in every county has a core group of people who wear many hats and are involved in a lot of things, from the fair to dairy promotion. They’ve stepped up to the plate for the 2017 Farm Technology Days; Bjurstrom said she appreciates their doing so. But she said it’s also been fun to see those who haven’t been super involved stepping up because of the show – and becoming new leaders in the agricultural community. Bjurstrom said Kewaunee County’s army of Farm Technology Days volunteers is doing extraordinary work, including the youth who have become involved. One example is William Hewett, who just finished his freshman year at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and is co-chair of
Innovation Square, the featured area of the show focused on technology and cuttingedge methods. He was still in high school when he stepped into that important role. Bjurstrom said she enjoys working with youth. This will be her 19th year judging county fairs throughout Wisconsin. She judges beef, sheep and swine, and carcass events. She has two fairs on her calendar for 2017, having dialed back her responsibilities on the tanbark because of Farm Technology Days. In more typical summers, she’ll judge five to eight county fairs – and upward of 10 to 12 fairs in an exceptionally busy summer. She said she especially likes judging carcass shows. “There’s nothing hiding what’s there – no grooming,” she said. “And I like teaching people about the actual project raising (which is meat).” She grew up on a small dairy farm west of Ashland in Bayfield County, Wisconsin – a county that hugs another of the Great Lakes, Lake Superior. While her dad, John Opatik, has passed away, her mother, Roberta Opatik, still owns the farm, which also included sheep and beef. She said her dad thought it was great his daughter went to college for agriculture, especially at the University of Wisconsin-Madison because he was a big Badgers fan. “He passed away before I started with UW-Extension, but if he were here today, he’d think it was pretty awesome I was able to help bring (Farm Technology Days) to Kewaunee County,” she said. “It’s my little homage to him.” After graduating from Washburn High School, she studied animal science at UWMadison, competing with a collegiate livestock-judging team. She graduated in 2000. Bjurstrom bought her first beef heifer, a Simmental, when she was 15 years old; she amassed a small herd of purebred Simmentals. She also had a commercial flock of sheep with heavy Suffolk influence. During her younger days at the halters of her livestock, the 11-year 4-H member had reserve champion twice with beef, and had three grand-champion lambs. These days she said she enjoys sharing her enthusiasm with youths showing at their county fairs. She pitches in at the workouts of the Kewaunee County livestock-judging team when able. “I like teaching,” she said of why she serves as a livestock judge at fairs. “It’s why I’m in the job I’m in. I enjoy seeing the See BJURSTROM, Page 6

passion kids have for showing their animals and that they’re having fun.” After college Bjurstrom worked four years as sales and marketing coordinator with BouMatic in Madison, Wisconsin, and three years in customer service with Accelerate Genetics in Baraboo, Wisconsin. She earned a master’s degree in 2006 in Education in Professional Development from UW-La Crosse, after which she went to work for UW-Extension. She and her husband, Mike Bjurstrom, a software developer, live in Luxemburg, Wisconsin. The couple shares a passion for woodworking and are almost ready to start selling the furniture and outdoor-type items they make. Bjurstrom said she originally interested her husband in woodworking; it was a hobby she once pursued with her dad. “He’s taken it (woodworking) a lot further than I expected,” Aerica Bjurstrom said. She said she also enjoys photography – especially snapping photos of cows. Many of her photos will be showcased on several backdrops in Extension’s education tent at Farm Technology Days.

The 2017 Wisconsin Farm Technology Days will be held July 11-13 in Kewaunee County. The event is promoted at the 2017 WPS Farm Show in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, by Executive Committee member Dave LaCrosse of Kewaunee, Wisconsin, and Executive Secretary Aerica Bjurstrom, University of Wisconsin-Extension agricultural agent in Kewaunee County.
Dairy dominates Kewaunee County agriculture, she said, with about 165 dairy herds in the county. There’s also a thriving wine industry, with three wineries in the county and additional growers providing grapes to
the industry. Dairy beef and Holstein steers are another important aspect of the county’s agriculture. In addition to forage, which will be featured in the show’s field demonstrations, a fair amount of wheat is grown
in the county. Wheat is used for grain and straw, but some producers use it as a nurse crop for alfalfa. There are even a couple of sunflower growers producing bird seed, she said, emphasizing the diversity of agriculture in the county. There will be plenty of education regarding water quality at the event, including addressing groundwater questions. She said she’s excited to have people learn about all the positives agriculture brings to the county. Bjurstrom said there are only 20,000some residents in Kewaunee County. Of those, almost 1,400 people are volunteers for Farm Technology Days. About one in 14 people in the county will be contributing time to the event. “Farmers are very progressive here,” she said. “Even the smallest farms have technology farmers wouldn’t have dreamed of having when I was a kid. They like to try new things.” Visit www.wifarmtechnologydays.com for more information. ALGOMA, Wis. – A 25-foot-tall lighthouse will guide attendees of Wisconsin Farm Technology Days as they navigate their way to Innovation Square. There they’ll see new technological advances and a farm market featuring several of the area’s diverse food and drink offerings. This year’s farm event will be held July 11-13 at Ebert Enterprises in Kewaunee County. The eight-sided lighthouse was built for Farm Technology Days by Tom Jerabek, a Kewaunee County carpenter, along with a team of volunteers. The lighthouse reflects the importance of Lake Michigan to the county, said Bill Roethle, who co-chairs the Innovation Square subcommittee with Will Hewett. “It was Will’s idea to feature the lighthouse,” Roethle said of his co-chair. Roethle and Hewett head one of the
teams, pairing Baby Boomer and Millennial co-chairs. At 19, Hewett is one of the youngest committee volunteers. He will be a sophomore at the University of Wisconsin this fall, and is interested in astrobiology — the study of life – even single-cell organisms – in space. “I attended Space Camp when I was in sixth-grade and wanted to learn more,” Hewett said. Agriculture also has been a large part of his life. His parents, Simon and Amber Hewett, operate a beef-cow-calf and sheep farm near Kewaunee where he and his

brother, Alex, 16, help with farm chores. The Hewetts also own and operate Lakeshore Dairy Services, which provides reproductive-management services to dairy producers. Growing up, Will Hewett was a member of the Kewaunee Dream Catchers 4-H club and showed pigs, beef and sheep at the Kewaunee County Fair as well as the Wisconsin State Fair. He also served on a 4-H leadership board and was a camp counselor. Having mostly worked with people his own age or younger, working with Roethle and other “seasoned’ generations on Farm Technology Days is a new experience. But he put it in perspective. “Bill has experience … I have youth and energy,” Hewett smiled. Roethle said his younger co-chair has shared good ideas – such as featuring the lighthouse as Innovation Square’s centerpiece. “He also has brought organizational skills,” Roethle said. For example, Hewett explained how the team could use Dropbox, a computer filehosting service that offers file synchronization, cloud storage and so on. Several of the event’s committees have young co-chairs in an effort to involve more young people in leadership activities and community
service, Roethle said. In the past several months, about 120 committee volunteers have been working to bring their plans to fruition. In keeping with the show theme, “Cooler by the lake,” Roethle and Hewett have planned a small replica of Lake Michigan, called “Lake Minigan.” The Innovation Square co-chairs will welcome several exhibitors to their area. In addition to several exhibitors showing technological advances, Innovation Square will spotlight more than a dozen Kewaunee County farm-market vendors. Some of the vendors will provide samples of their products. The co-chairs are encouraging exhibitors to help visitors to Farm Technology Days learn about agriculture and how their food is produced. “We want them to tell attendees what they do and why they do it,” he said. ALGOMA, Wis. – Thirty-minute farm tours of Ebert Enterprises, the 2017 Wisconsin Farm Technology Days host farm, will be conducted daily during the July 11-13 show in Kewaunee County. The 3,500-cowplus dairy with an 80-stall rotary parlor is operated by Randy and Renee Ebert, children Jordan and Whitney and their staff of employees. Thirty-eight trams and five buses will load between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. by the University of Wisconsin-Extension education area on the west side of Tent City for farm tours and field demonstrations. Tours are handicapped-accessible. Participants won’t be able to disembark during the tours, said John Blazei of Kewaunee, cochair of the tours and field-demonstrations committee. Blazei said it’s a short tram ride from Tent City to the Ebert farmstead, where people can see a new rotary parlor inside a new octagon-type facility built to resemble a nostalgic red barn. Big doors on every side will give tour-goers a good view of the rotary, and during the three milkings, contented cows stepping on for a ride. A milk silo can also be seen; Ebert Enterprises does not direct-load its milk. Other features include: A curtained and

ALGOMA, Wis. — Alfalfa harvesting has top billing for field demonstrations at the 2017 Wisconsin Farm Technology Days, to be held July 11-13 in Kewaunee County, Wisconsin. But harvest of Wisconsin’s starring forage will share the spotlight with direct-cut triticale harvest, mechanical rock picking and Matt Glewen tillage during the three-day show at Ebert Enterprises near Algoma. In 2015, Kewaunee County was home to 45,500 dairy cows in 167 herds, according to the latest Wisconsin Agricultural Statistics book for 2016. That’s Dave a lot of bovine mouths to La Crosse feed. At Ebert Enterprises, there are more than 3,500 cows hankering for alfalfa haylage. John Blazei is co-chair of the field-demonstrations and farm-tours committee for the 2017 event. Blazei is owner of Blazei
Hoof Trimming. With six trimming units and nine employees, the business trims feet on upward of 100,000 cows a year in the Wisconsin counties of Kewaunee, Brown, Oconto, Manitowoc and Shawano. In business 30 years in 2017, Blazei grew up on a 60-cow dairy in Kewaunee County. Involved in Kewaunee County’s dairy promotions, he’s experienced in farm tours at the county’s farm breakfasts. Blazei’s co-chair is Joe Stangel. Originally from a farm in Kewaunee County, Stangel now lives in Green Bay. He’s service supervisor for Cummins Sales and Service at De Pere, Wisconsin. Dave LaCrosse, cropping manager for Pagel’s Ponderosa, a large dairy near Kewaunee, Wisconsin, is liaison on the show’s executive committee for the fielddemonstrations and tours committee. Blazei said about 300 acres of forage will be harvested during the show. Ebert Enterprises’ alfalfa suffered considerable winterkill this past winter, as did many fields in various locations in Wisconsin. Blazei said alfalfa fields have been filled in with forage oats. He estimated winterkill at the host farm was 40 percent to 50 percent. See DEMOS, Page 16

Quilt gift to host family This quilt, featuring aspects of Kewaunee County agriculture and memories of 2017 Wisconsin Farm Technology Days host farm Ebert Enterprises of Algoma, is a present to host farmers Randy and Renee Ebert for hosting the July 11-13 event. The quilt project was spearheaded by the Kewaunee County Association of Home and Community Education, which is still known by many as ‘Extension Homemakers.’ Anne Sinkula, a quilter from Kewaunee, Wisconsin, sewed the Farm Tech Days commemorative quilt. During Wisconsin Farm Technology Days the quilt will be on display with other information about the host family in the Family Living Tent in Tent City. JANE FYKSEN/AGRI-VIEW

S.D. Ellenbecker! Specializing in all type of concrete construction, including a variety of dairy industry and agricultural structures
Cost effective... All-metal construction requires fewer posts and columns. A standard all-metal barn would contain four columns instead of six found in most wood barns.
Innovative construction methods... Ellenbecker is one of the first to introduce an all-metal frame method of agricultural construction to the area.
Durable, safer materials... Structures are far less susceptible to fire since no wood is used in the construction process. Buildings are more resistant to natural elements than wooden counterparts.

“There was a lot of ice through winter,” he said of rain and freezing rain that iced over fields. “Farms closer to (Lake Michigan) got it this year. We chose to leave the alfalfa, because we didn’t want a soft bed for tent city, so we interseeded forage oats.” He said the interseeded alfalfa was looking good as of early June. Field demonstrations will take place all three days from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. The committee will use 38 trams and five buses to deliver show-goers to fielddemonstration locations near tent city, or to offer a tour of Ebert Enterprises’ facilities. Blazei emphasized that handicap accessibility is no issue. According to LaCrosse, alfalfa will likely be cut, merged and chopped in the afternoons due to heavy dews. Direct-cut harvest of triticale will take place in the mornings. Triticale will also be harvested conventionally as well. Triticale, LaCrosse said, is a cover crop typically utilized by large dairies like Ebert Enterprises, which mostly uses it as heifer feed. Usually it’s harvested as forage sooner, but the triticale is needed for field demonstrations. While the committee is working with farm-equipment manufacturers to obtain pieces for the demonstration, Blazei said there are at least three different directcut harvest heads that will go through the standing crop, to cut and chop in one pass. The forage will be harvested directly into trucks. There will also be at least four self-propelled harvesters as well as pull-types. There will be mower-conditioner and mergers. Forage will be moved in trucks to Eberts’ bunker area. Farmers will be able to see bunkers being packed if they go on a tour of the farmstead. Blazei said equipment will make a couple of passes and then shut down. Utilizing auctioneer-type trucks, companies will give brief descriptions of their equipment and answer questions. No baling of dry hay will be demonstrated this year at Wisconsin Farm Technology Days. “With the show right along Lake Michigan we don’t have the ability to dry the crop,” Blazei said. “Eberts have no use for bale silage either.” Tillage will be demonstrated all three days, from vertical-till pieces to disks to field cultivators and more. Deep tillage and finishing tillage will both be featured. Blazei said he anticipates three companies bringing different styles of mechanical

Scott Salzsieder, known to many as “Gumby,” works at Ebert Enterprises, host farm for the 2017 Wisconsin Farm Technology Days. In 2004 he started on the farm’s maintenance team, which included equipment and buildings. Today he is lead operator in the cropping operations; he overseas machinery maintenance and cropping operations.
rock pickers for demonstration during the show. Typically a job shouldered by a crew of teenagers, rock picking is tedious and physically demanding work. Mechanical rock pickers make short work of being able to prepare seedbeds for forage seeding. “In our area there are a lot of stones,” Blazei said. “You can fill a wagon in a couple hundred yards.” Rain shouldn’t be much of an issue for the 2017 event, according to Matt Glewen of New Holstein, Wisconsin. Glewen is general manager of Wisconsin Farm Technology Days Inc. “It’s not going to get rained out,” Glewen said with determination. Tent city is on a gravel hill that Glewen said he’s seen receive 2.5 inches of rain in one fell swoop – and he was still able to drive out there. The 2017 show site – including fields for machinery demonstrations – can take a lot of water, he said. Visit www.wifarmtechnologydays.com or www.facebook.com/FTD2017 for more information. Jefferson County prepares for 2019 Jefferson County will host Wisconsin Farm Technology Days, July 23-25, 2019. The annual three-day event will be held at Walter Grain Farms near Grellton, Wisconsin, in northwest Jefferson County. Mike and Sarah Walter farm with their two sons and their wives – Adam and Heather Walter, and Brad and Kristi Walter. With combined and separate business operations, the Walter family grows corn, soybeans, winter wheat and Scott alfalfa on more than 6,000 Schneider acres. Mike Walter’s parents, Bernard and Beverly Walter, hosted Wisconsin Farm Technology Days in 1984. The Walter family joins a small group of other farm families who have hosted Wisconsin Farm Technology Days more than once. Scott Schneider, owner of Nature Link Farms in Lake Mills, Wisconsin, is serving as chairman of the executive committee organizing Jefferson County’s Farm Technology Days. “We recently held an orientation meeting for our committee chairs and cochairs,” Schneider said. About 40 people attended the meeting to receive information on logistics and resources about Wisconsin Farm Technology Days. About 15 additional volunteers are expected to join in committee work. “Alfalfa also has been planted at Walter Grain Farms in preparation for Tent City, field demonstrations and parking,” Schneider said. “The field is beautiful. It looks like a golf course.” Jefferson County also has formed a committee to determine what the commemorative toy for the 2019 Wisconsin Farm Technology Days will be. “It will be something specific that showcases our area of the world,” Schneider said. Stay tuned. Visit www.wifarmtechnologydays.com/jefferson or call 920-6747295 for more information.

Infrared cameras to detect infection, iPads to score cows’ hooves for digital dermatitis, adenosine triphosphate – ATP – meters to determine cleanliness, and gasmonitoring systems and masks are among the many new technologies being used in dairy production. The innovations will be the focus of discussion at the University of Wisconsin-Extension’s Education Station at the 2017 Wisconsin Farm Technology Days. UW-Extension specialists and county agriculture educators also will be discussing how dairy producers can breed for increased female calvings and/or beefcross calves to sell. Producers are encouraged to visit a crossbreeding display outside of the UW-Extension Education Station to learn about the economics involved and how the practice has worked for Ebert Enterprises, host of this year’s Wisconsin Farm Technology Days. Laptop computers will be available to run spreadsheets and

A full-size Gehl 800 forage harvester, after which Kewaunee County Farm Technology Days’ commemorative collector toy is designed, will be part of a large display of historical forage harvesters in the heritage-equipment area at Farm Technology Days. Sue Sevcik, a Kewaunee, Wisconsin, dairy producer and Farm Tech Days executive committee member, left, has been working on the farm-history aspect of the show with Dale Swoboda, whose home farm in Kewaunee County turns 150 years in 2017.

ALGOMA, Wis. — Agriculture has roots that run deep and broad in Kewaunee County, Wisconsin, the host county for the 2017 Wisconsin Farm Technology Days to be held July 11-13. An 8-acre heritage tractor and equipment area will feature equipment that was made in Kewaunee County as well as in Wisconsin. Sue Sevcik There will be makes and models to trigger memories and reminiscences a plenty, and for younger generations to explore agriculture’s past. There will be between 150 and 200 antique and specialty tractors at the 2017 Farm Technology Days, said Dale Swoboda
of Two Rivers, Wisconsin, who co-chairs the farm show’s heritage area and chairs its farm-toy committee. A Kewaunee County native, Swoboda owns his home farm, which he proudly announced will turn 150 years old this year. Rare specialty tractors include Case’s Spirit of ’76, which was made for the U.S. bicentennial in 1976. He said Case also made a specially painted Black Knight and Golden Knight tractors that will be on display. Swoboda said Case IH Magnums debuted in 1987. When the 50,000th unit came off the assembly line, he said a very limited number of Magnums with special decals were produced. One will be at the show, along with a gold-and-red Magnum made for the 20th anniversary and, more recently, a silver-and-red one for the 25th See HERITAGE, Page 24

Dale Swoboda, a Kewaunee County, Wisconsin, native now living in Two Rivers, Wisconsin, is leading the team restoring this pea viner, which was once made in Kewaunee County. Swoboda says the piece was sitting neglected in a wooded gravel-pit area until Swoboda and fellow antique-farm-equipment buffs decided to fix it for Wisconsin Farm Technology Days.

Although Swoboda is primarily a farmtoy collector, he owns a Farmall 300 his dad bought new that he will have at Wisconsin Farm Technology Days, as well as some Algoma choppers and feed cutters that were made in Kewaunee County. “We’ll also have a nice forage-harvester display, including ones Fox and Gehl made through the years, including a unique yellow Gehl, Swoboda said. “We’ll have early selfpropelled such as the Uni-system made by both New Idea and Moline. He expected 40-some choppers to be on display. Threshing and corn shelling will be demonstrated at the show, along with a shingle mill. “We’ll run a small amount of silage through feed cutters, he said. highlighted a woodstove that will be fired up to recreate the summer kitchens farm women used. She said folks who stop in the morning hours of the show will be served some breakfast foods made on the woodstove. Swoboda said there will be a farm and agricultural-manufacturing history tent in the heritage area of Tent City. It will feature Hanrahan Lakeside Dairy, a former milk bottler in Kewaunee, Wisconsin. There will be all sorts of dairy memoribilia, including an old truck to haul milk and a pasteurizing system. There will also be a small-engine display including a Marvel engine made in 1906 in Kewaunee that was used to run water pumps and the like. A Hamachek pea viner formerly made in Kewaunee County will be displayed near the special heritage-area tent. Hamachek made canning-crops equipment from the 1880s to the late 1990s. Swoboda said he and other heritage-equipment-show officials looked for several years for a pea viner like the one they finally dug out of an old wooded gravel pit. Welding has been underway on the 1961 pea viner, which Swoboda said will be cosmetically ready for Farm Technology Days but not operational. He said a Farmaster tractor will also be featured. After World War II the Kewaunee shipyards on nearby Lake Michigan turned

out some Farmaster field equipment and contributed parts to the Farmaster tractor. GEHL PIECE LAST COMMEMORATIVE TOY For its commemorative farm toy, the Kewaunee County Wisconsin Farm Technology Days is offering collectors a Gehl 800 Forage Harvester. Gehl — a Wisconsin-based company in West Bend — made the real deal from 1975 to 1985, according to Swoboda, who was inducted into the National Farm Toy Hall of Fame several years ago. He’s been collecting farm toys for more than six decades. The special-edition harvester is a 1/16 die-cast model with two interchangeable model heads – one for hay pick-up, the other a corn head. The harvester has never before been made as a model. Kewaunee County Farm Technology Days has 1,000 made for the show; 825 had been sold by the fourth week in June, putting the farm toy on track for possibly selling out prior to the show. A full-size Gehl 800 had been used at one point in time by the Ebert family, farm hosts for the event in Kewaunee County. The toy sells for $175, plus $25 shipping and handling for people who don’t want to pick theirs up during Farm Technology Days. a collector-caliber commemorative toy for its show. The Gehl 800 forage harvester in Kewaunee County is likely to be the last in a long line of such toys sold by Farm Technology Days events. Wood County plans instead to offer a less expensive collectible toy intended for children to play with. Swoboda says farm toys and farm-scene displays will be featured in Innovation Square in Tent City. There will be a scale model of Kewaunee County’s only round barn, which is still standing along Wisconsin Highway 42 on the southern edge of Kewaunee County. The model was made by Charlie Bauer of Newton, Wisconsin. Sevcik, who is a school teacher, volunteers with Agricultural Heritage and Resources Inc., a non-profit educational organization based in Kewaunee. Swoboda is vice president of the organization, which operates a Czech homestead farm site including a log house in Kewaunee County. He said the county is home to many people – including farmers – of Bohemian or Czech descent. He said the barn and pavilion on the donated property is frequently rented out for weddings. The group will be holding its Agricultural Heritage Days Sept. 23 and 24 at the Kewaunee County Fairgrounds in Luxemburg, Wisconsin, where Minneapolis Moline and other brands of antique tractors will be exhibited. There will be a tractor parade and tractor pull, horse show, children’s pedal-tractor maze, threshing demos and more. Agri-View, farmer give away unique chair JANE FYKSEN
jfyksen@madison.com, 715-683-2779
SHEBOYGAN FALLS, Wis. –- Wisconsin farmers don’t do much sitting on the job unless it’s on a tractor. Dairy farmer and custom operator Josh Kroeplien has come together with Agri-View to change that. In its booth, B098 in agribusiness tent B at Wisconsin Farm Technology Days in Kewaunee County, Agri-View is holding a drawing to give away an outdoor chair handmade by Kroeplien. One of Agri-View’s “From the Fields” producerreporters for the 2017 growing season, the young farmer has an on-farm woodworking business called Josh’s Woodworks. His tagline for his business is, “Wood you like what I sawed?” Kroeplien, 29, farms in Sheboygan County, Wisconsin, with his folks, Jim and Chris Kroeplien, and younger sister, Rachel Kroeplien. The family operates between 800 and 900 acres, and milks 550 cows. Kroeplien also does custom tillage,
planting, spraying and combining. Not one to sit still for long, Kroeplien relaxes from the stresses of farming by turning out custom-made garden benches and chairs, farm signs and other custom signs, children’s furniture and more. He creates toy boxes that resemble hip-roofed red barns. Youngsters get a kick out of his cow or tractor “rocking horses.” His woodworking shop occupies a 32-by-60-foot area in the back portion of a new farm shop at the farm on the outskirts of Sheboygan Falls. While he employs a part-time sander, family and his girlfriend lend a hand. Kroeplien said he likes to do cutting and shaping himself, as well as designing and constructing any prototypes. Kroeplien started woodworking when he was 7. His paternal grandfather, the late Marvin Kroeplien, introduced him to the hobby by helping him build birdhouses and other simple projects. In 4-H he was in the woodworking project and See CHAIR, Page 36
Which Barn is Best For Your Herd? Starwood Rafter Uses: • Pole Sheds • Free Stalls • Pavilion Shelters • Machinery Storage • Riding Arena Birds just love this barn. The webs in these trusses are easy nest areas for birds. They also restrict air flow which leads to poor ventilation and moisture buildup in the building.
• Spans up to 72 ft. • Stronger. Can be spaced up to 12 feet apart depending on the load you desire • Bird Nesting Control
The arched rafters create a more open barn allowing better ventilation. Also since there are no open webs in the trusses, there are no places for birds to nest.

Agricultural operations face some of the toughest challenges in material handling, including a non-stop environment, demanding deadlines for livestock feeding, crop harvest, product delivery and more. Tight spaces and variable terrain add further complexity to moving different types of material. With Wacker Neuson skid steers, wheel loaders and telehanders, you can match the right machine for the job, so you can load more, move it faster, place it anywhere – and save money.

Grandpa Fenner helped cut and sand projects; he was affectionately called “Mr. Putty” for his obsession with putty. After he passed away, Kroeplien made a chair in his memory. It’s displayed in the sheep barn at the Sheboygan County Fair, where Fenner liked to sit watching the crowds of people, he said. “Cut once, measure twice.” In 2016, Kroeplien sold some 200 garden benches, a dozen or more toy boxes, and numerous other pieces. He held an open house at the farm for Josh’s Woodworks on the first weekend of the deer-gun season. And he has a booth at the Sheboygan County Fair, which in 2017 runs Aug. 31 through Sept. 4 at Plymouth, Wisconsin. Orders from the fair keep him busy until Christmas. He said he prefers to have all his customers ordering Christmas gifts by Oct. 1 at the latest. “I do a lot of building during the winter, to build up an inventory,” he said. He said he can meet a four- to sixweek turnaround on most of his furniture orders. Kroeplien estimated that 75 percent of his orders come in between Labor Day and Christmas. For a farm sign, for instance, Kroeplien enjoys working one-on-one with a customer who has specific artwork for the sign in mind. He sends the customer a “proof” of the design for approval before starting to construct it. He said he either does the artwork based on the customer’s desire, or helps tweak artwork

Groundwater contamination has been a controversial issue in Kewaunee County and will be addressed July 13 at the University of Wisconsin-Extension Education Station at Wisconsin Farm Technology Days. At 11 a.m. July 13 Ken Bradbury, director and state geologist of the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey, will discuss the geology and hydroecolKen ogy of Kewaunee County. Bradbury He will address where the county’s water comes from, where it goes and its susceptibilities to contamination. Bradbury will discuss areas with thin soil where manure application should be avoided. Better maps are Kevin being developed to show Masarik karst and bedrock topography so farmers can avoid spreading manure in those areas. “Practices must be tailored to the landscape,” Bradbury said. The Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey is developing a bedrock map for the town of Lincoln in Kewaunee
County to provide information about the depth of the bedrock and susceptibility to groundwater contamination, Bradbury said. The Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey can advise farmers and others on well depth and proper construction. “Proper construction is another way to protect drinking water,” Bradbury said. Visitors to Wisconsin Farm Technology Days can have their well water tested for nitrate, the most common health-related contaminant found in Wisconsin’s groundwater. It’s a free test and results are provided in just a few minutes. Attendees are encouraged to bring 1 cup of well water in any clean container to the UW-Extension Education Station. “About one out of every 10 private wells in Wisconsin may contain unsafe levels of nitrate,” said Kevin Masarik, UW-Extension groundwater educator. “Areas of the state with a greater intensity of agriculture generally have more issues with nitrate in well water at concentrations of concern. Certain geology or soils can make areas more prone to groundwater contamination as well.” At 2 p.m. July 13, Masarik will give a presentation on how to reduce nitrate losses to groundwater. That session also will be held at UW-Extension’s Education Station. Visit www.wifarmtechnologydays.com for more information.
